In this episode of The Six-Figure Author Experiment, Lee and Russell share their insights on the realities of being an author, discussing everything from book launches to the challenges of sustaining a long-term career. Their candid conversation provides actionable advice for writers navigating both the creative and business sides of publishing. Here are five key takeaways:* Prioritize Collaboration Over Immediate Sales: While events like Comic-Con can feel exhausting, Lee emphasizes the real value in networking and building relationships. Long-term collaborations and connections can create opportunities far more valuable than a few book sales at an event.* Leverage Online Reader Engagement: In-person signings are often time-consuming and may not yield high returns. Both Lee and Russell suggest shifting to online platforms like TikTok or hosting virtual signings, where authors can engage with a larger audience without the physical and financial burdens of traveling.* Balance Creativity With Business Goals: Lee and Russell discuss the tension between pursuing creative projects and achieving financial success. Writers should find a balance—exploring creative freedom while making decisions that support financial stability and growth.* Test and Adapt Marketing Strategies: Russell shares his experience of launching a book trilogy that didn't hit the high expectations. The key lesson is to experiment with marketing tactics, such as cover designs or ads, and be willing to adjust strategies based on what works best for your audience.* Create a Sustainable Work Environment: Both hosts stress the importance of maintaining physical health and preventing burnout. Lee highlights the benefits of creating an ergonomic workspace and setting boundaries to sustain long-term productivity in your writing career.Final Thoughts: Lee and Russell remind writers that success is a marathon, not a sprint. Focusing on long-term growth, building meaningful connections, and adapting to challenges are key to thriving in the competitive world of publishing. With persistence, self-care, and strategic thinking, writers can achieve a sustainable and fulfilling career. This is a public episode. The charges stem from an incident in June. Sinclair attributed his resignation to a planned move outside the city limits at month's end. Fellow council members expressed surprise at Sinclair's departure, with some speculating about the timing given the upcoming court proceedings. The June incident resulted in a three-car pileup, and Sinclair is accused of leaving the scene. He also faces additional legal challenges, including a lawsuit from Fifth Third Bank and the closure of his brewery. City officials are now working to set dates for a special election to fill the vacant council seat. STORY 2: Gov. Kemp Signs New Cobb School Board Map into Law Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has signed into law a new map for the Cobb County Board of Education, redrawing district lines as proposed by state Sen. Ed Setzler. The move follows a December ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Eleanor Ross that invalidated the previous map due to claims of racial gerrymandering. Setzler's map, intended to comply with Ross' order, will be in effect for upcoming elections. Despite protests from organizations such as the Georgia Youth Justice Coalition, Setzler stands by the map, asserting it adheres to the court's directive and represents the community's interests. STORY 3: Unemployment rate drops in Cobb Cobb County reported a preliminary unemployment rate of 2.6% in December, a decrease from November's 2.8%, but a slight uptick from the 2.4% recorded in December 2022. The labor force saw a reduction of 1,919 between November and December, with 430,543 individuals employed and 11,357 unemployed out of a total of 441,900 members. Despite the year-over-year increase in the jobless rate, the county saw an employment boost of more than 6,700 people from December 2022 to December 2023. Local cities Marietta and Smyrna also experienced varied unemployment rates, with December figures standing at 2.5% and 2.9% respectively. Compared to the Atlanta metro area and the state of Georgia, the county's jobless rates remain relatively low.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Break: Drake STORY 4: Mableton Council Raises Concerns About Mayoral Power Grab Members of the Mableton City Council have voiced concerns over a proposal by Mayor Michael Owens to form mayoral committees that would report directly to him, arguing it could undermine the council's authority. Owens' proposed resolution aimed to set up committees for various initiatives, with the mayor selecting members and chairpersons. Council members countered that this method contradicts the city charter, which outlines the council's responsibility in committee appointments. Owens explained that these committees would serve in an advisory capacity without decision-making authority. Despite his reassurances, council members called for revisions to ensure compliance with the city charter, stressing the importance of transparency and adherence to proper procedures in forming committees. The resolution has been set aside for further review. STORY 5: Chattahoochee Tech Announces 2024 Top Student and Instructor Chattahoochee Technical College has named its top student and instructor for 2024. Kristin Lee, an occupational therapy assistant program student, was awarded the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership, which acknowledges academic and leadership excellence. Natalia Meneses, a political science instructor at the college, received the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Education, which honors outstanding teaching. Both Lee and Meneses will compete in the Technical College System of Georgia's regional competitions. Regional winners will then advance to the state level. In addition, the college recognized Karina Moyado Montoya as the recipient of the Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education award for 2024. Grief can impact us all during the holiday season. The collective grief we've been experiencing during this global pandemic has been unprecedented in our lifetime. And even though we all experience grief or know someone who's going through it, we don't really know how to talk about it. Do we use words like loss, passing, dying, or what? Do we way we're okay when clearly we are in mourning? In this episode, I invited grief expert Lee Pollak to teach us to talk about grief. Lee's been a licensed clinical social worker in the Bay Area for over 30 years, working in the fields of grief care, trauma, and loss. In our conversation, Lee shares powerful insights about grief during the holidays, drawing on her own personal losses as well as her interactions with clients over the years. Lee encourages us to learn to talk about grief with empathy, sincerity, and frequency. When someone's grieving and no one's speaking about it, the mourner feels isolated and the grief can linger and remain unresolved. If you're grieving, what do you say when someone asks you at the grocery store how you are? What do you say to an acquaintance? How about a friend? And what do you say to someone who tells you they are grieving? Both Lee and I give examples of our own experiences being the mourner or the person who receives the information from someone that they are mourning. Of course, Lee also shares what not to say because sometimes we can inadvertently put the responsibility on the mourner who is already feeling great sorrow. We talk about the role of curiosity and culture when it comes to normalizing grief. We also discuss the idea of memorial rituals during the holidays, in acknowledgement of those who are physically absent but always in our heart. And Lee gives some suggestions about the kind of rituals you may want to initiate to remember the loved ones who died. Takeaways from this episode: This year the holidays feel different, and it's important to raise our awareness and have the language to acknowledge this out loud Communicating about grief and about those who died is a way to connect with those who are grieving so they don't feel isolated Tapping into grief as a way of tapping into love Consider starting a ritual in memory of those loved ones --- LINKS FROM THIS EPISODE: For further exploration, please visit: Learn more about the Professional Grief Caregivers' Network, which Lee founded: https://jewishhealingcenter.org/for-rabbis-professional-caregivers/grief-caregivers-network/ For more resources about communication, go to: https://www.languagealchemy.com/blogandvideo To ask your communication questions, click here: https://www.languagealchemy.com/podcastquestion To join the mailing list, visit: www.languagealchemy.com Podcast Music composed by Gary Lapow: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1HlMhcNfKIELxYil5mVqDI Produced by The Podcast Space, LLC.

Lee feels out of control over the possibility of the presence of Rob. Kirsty begs him not to do anything stupid. While they look for a key to beef up security at the Beechwood house, the CCTV system alerts Lee. He rushes to catch the intruder, assuming it's Rob. But Kirsty quickly realises it's Blake, one of Philip's former slaves. He's in a sorry state but he insists he's fine and explains he's been waiting for Philip as he's keen to work for him again. Brian requests more consultation from Stella on decisions about Home Farm and she replies with the same request. She quizzes Brian on who he thinks might take over the farm from him and he can't provide a solid answer. Brian points out where Adam has gone wrong in the past but Stella thinks Adam was ahead of his time with his commitment to soil health; she's seldom seen soil in better heart. Lee's apologetic for attacking Blake when he saw him. Blake tells him not to worry about it. Blake questions Lee about who Rob is and why he would be hanging round, and then apologises for asking too many questions. Blake panics when Kirsty explains a police officer, Harrison, is coming over. Both Lee and Kirsty try to calm him but Blake won't be pacified. He points out Philip told him to stay away from police, believing that the explosion at Grey Gables was his fault. So how can he talk to Harrison?

Once a month-ish, Lee Shackleford comes on to talk with Jonah about a 10-minute play. Both Lee and Jonah are playwrights, directors, and have produced short play festivals (Lee has done many more than Jonah). These discussions tap into not only the writing and storytelling, but also what goes through the mind of a producer when they read your play. The play in questions is Backyard/Blues by Nick Baker. Much of the conversation is about the information on the Character page, so I've pasted it here. CHARACTERS BRUCE: (Masc/60's/white) A recently retired CEO of a company his great grandfather started. FRANKLIN: (Masc/mid-late 30's/Black) Bruce's long time personal assistant who has been promoted to CEO after working closely with him for 12 years. POMEGRANATE: (Femme/50's/white) Bruce's wife. Has been fooling herself into believing in an empty, loveless marriage for far too long. SETTING A cozy backyard in suburban Massachusetts, USA. TIME July 4th, 2021 Notes for Consideration: - When a character's line reads “ … “ it marks a dramatic beat. This could be a rest, a moment of reflection, connection, regret, realization, humor, awkward tension; anything really. - If a line is bracketed with double parentheses on both sides ((like this)), it marks a character saying a line for themself. Can be an aside. Doesn't have to be heard by everybody. - Feel free to construct the house and porch with the cheapest materials possible. Everything about this set is flimsy and not built to last.

An all too familiar knitting crossroad - does one I knit a sweater or not. Whether you're new to sweaters or have been making them for years, you'll likely enjoy this "nerdy" sweater conversation.  First they catch up by discussing what's on their needles. Both Lee and Stacey are making patterns for our latest Knit Picks Collections. Lee even shares her latest yarn substitution and talks about color selection. From pullover and cardigans, to seamed vs seamless, Stacey and Lee review the various styles and constructions of sweaters. Stacey asks the question - what does the word "sweater" mean to you? Is a cardigan a sweater? Together, the two ponder fashion philosophy and ask you to weigh in.    In the second half, the two ruminate different sweater collars, sleeves, and shapes. Cowl neck vs. turtle necks, boat vs crew, and more, they define some terms to help clarify what you might see in a pattern. Born in Oklahoma, Lee went from a waiter with no degree to being recruited by Disney to launch the food and beverage division of Disney Paris. They are now both pioneering their own ventures and experiencing major success. These guys know what it takes to Standout and today, they are sharing their wisdom and experience with you. We all learn through experience, exposure and education. A true leader will make the most out of every experience. Know who you are and what you want to be known for and find those people who live those values and study them. There is power in saying yes and approaching simple tasks with an amazing attitude. When aptitude is equal, attitude will be the determining factor people look for. When you boil it down, Standing out is about being trustworthy. Decide how you want to be perceived, and then make sure you do those things. You will stand out in your consistency, attitude and follow through. If there is a gap in how you want to be seen and how others see you, then you aren't all the way there. You can't be everything to everyone. Decide what you want to do well and then learn it – be the best there is at it. Don't settle for simply being a high performer. Be the person who lifts others to that level as well.   Rise. Shine. If you are a Detroit Red Wings fan, then this edition of the We Live Hockey Podcast is a must listen. Heck, I'm not even a Red Wings fan and I enjoyed the heck out of this particular podcast. In this very special and unique podcast, Lee and Travis interview Joshua Riehl and Jenny Feterovich, the producers of The Russian Five. Wings' fans, you know who these guys are as they all made a significant impact to your team. For those that may be too young to remember who these guys were, they were Vladimir Konstantinov, Sergei Fedorov, Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov, and Slava Kozlov. If you ask me, these five ov's were dominant for the Wings for several seasons. In listening to the podcast, you will learn the following just like I did: - Both Lee and Travis are Flyer fans. Unfortunately for them, the Russian Five and the rest of their Wings' teammates swept their club in the 1997 Cup Final in route to their first Cup in 42 years. Sorry guys! - While Lee is a Flyer fan, he does tell us how he came to appreciate the Russian Five. Lee mentions that they did a lot for the game, especially in terms of how they showed the rest of the league that players from other countries could work together with the rest of their teammates to accomplish the ultimate goal. For me at least, this is a very interesting point because it really set the tone for clubs bringing in more Russians and other Europeans to their respective hockey clubs and helping to make the sport more inclusive. - As the podcast began, we learned that Jenny came from the Soviet Union and like the Russian Five, ended up coming over to North America for a better life. - Speaking of having a better life, Jenny and Joshua spoke about how rigid the Russian Five's lives were over in Russia. Could you imagine life being so bad in your country that you feel the need to get out and do so under the radar? I can't! - Joshua told us how his love for the Red Wings and the way their Russians played drew him to the game and make him turn away from baseball. You made the right choice, Joshua. Thank you, Russians! - If you're a Wings' fan or even a die hard hockey fan, than you probably remember the horrific limo accident that Konstantinov, team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov, and driver Richard Gnida got into just a few nights after the team won the Cup. It made Joshua realize just how fragile life was and that despite everything that happened on that awful night, these guys persevered in the biggest way. - As someone who is not a Red Wings fan, I did not know how much Wings' fans loved Konstantiov. Joshua mentioned that while fans loved their captain in Stevie Yzerman as well as the "perfect person" Nicklas Lidstrom, they really, really loved what Konstantinov brought to the table every night. - It was interesting to hear how much Joshua and Jenny risked to do this. It cost a lot of money to make, it was hard to conduct the interviews because of heavy government interference in Moscow, but you'll have to listen to hear more about this (Hint: 23:43 into the podcast) - In listening to this podcast, I really appreciated just how much effort and passion Joshua and Jennifer put in to get this documentary done. These two believed in the story and wanted to convey to everyone, not just hockey fans, how important the Russian Five were to both the hockey world and sports world in general.

With college skyrocketing in price every year, machining trade schools offer an affordable and promising solution to those looking for a meaningful - and even lucrative - career path. Kurt Preisendanz is the Director of Training at the NTMA Training Centers in Southern California. Passionate about sharing the opportunities that machining has to offer the next generation, Kurt explains the challenges that trade schools face and ways that manufacturing leaders can help lead the charge in alternative higher education. Lee Norton is a board member of the California Manufacturing Workforce Foundation, a 501c3 charity that uses their donations to provide tuition and funding to currently enrolled students who are pursuing technical careers. Be sure to listen to this inspiring and insightful episode to learn more about the amazing option of machining trade schools and how you can make a difference.  Connect with us:www.MakingChips.com/contact Overcoming the misperception that trade schools aren’t good enough  Kurt shares the struggles that he faces when representing the NTMA Training Centers at job fairs and high schools. Many parents and teachers push their children towards universities and traditional college paths because they believe those are the best options available. Trade schools are often looked down upon as not good enough for promising students or as a legitimate gateway into a successful career. Kurt explains that this is mostly an American view, as Europe has long viewed learning and mastering a trade as a proper way to begin a career and life as an adult.  Lee shares that while his children are attending university, they have a clear goal in mind. The problem isn’t that the traditional college route is wrong - it’s that it is often wasted and is perceived as the only path to success. That simply isn’t the case. Both Lee and Kurt believe that low trade school attendance and acceptance has to do with the fact that people simply don’t understand the value of what is being taught. The manufacturing world, especially, is still viewed as the dirty factory work that we all want to avoid and escape. Manufacturing, however, has become one of the most modernized and technological industries in the world. The robotics, engineering, building, and software developed and utilized within the manufacturing industry is extremely cutting-edge. The challenge is to overcome the misperceptions surrounding trade schools and machining and to effectively share the opportunity of a machining certification.  Machining trade schools offer modern, effective, and exciting opportunities  Forget the old days of dirty shop floors and being “doomed” to dangerous factory work. The modern world of machining and manufacturing is filled with incredible technology. Kurt explains that while students in machining trade schools are required to learn all the basics of machining, they are exposed to the many specializations that are available, including robotics, CNC machining, inspection, Master CAM, and CMM. Every one of NTMA’s students learns turning and milling and the fundamentals of machining so that they understand how everything is made. The program can be completed in as little as seven months, with daily hands-on instruction. Students graduate with a certification and are guided and encouraged in their job-finding journey. Many leave with job offers and the promise of an exciting and lucrative future.  Enabling and inspiring the next generation of manufacturing leaders to take action  Both Kurt and Lee believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel concerning the skills gap in the manufacturing industry. Many are beginning to understand and view a machining career as a valid and exciting opportunity. Kurt ensures that his presentations at job fairs and high schools accurately depict the advanced technological atmosphere that is machining. He shares the diverse culture of the manufacturing world as well. It’s not just men, but women as well, who are finding meaningful work in an industry where their talents are valued. Both young and old are finding new purpose and life in manufacturing. Lee knows that the manufacturing industry is all about giving back. Many who are in the industry grew up in it and have been a part of the Metal Working Nation for generations. Lee and Kurt believe that investing in the next generation of machinists is vital to the health of the industry. Being able to provide scholarships to currently enrolled students in technical fields of study is a huge part of keeping the manufacturing future strong. Be sure to listen to the whole episode for ideas on how you - as a manufacturing leader - can get involved!  Guiding students’ expectations towards a stable and meaningful future Kurt explains that many of the students who go to the NTMA training centers are excited about the opportunities ahead. Kurt makes sure, however, that they understand the level of hard work required. No, they aren’t going to make 100k in their first couple of years as machinists, but what they do have to look forward to is a lifelong career built on engaging and purposeful work. They can grow as fast as they want in the industry - there’s no limit to what they can learn and accomplish. They are investing in a career that can offer them a sense of pride in their labor and skillset, opportunities in aerospace and government - all while supplying them with a stable career that will enhance their marriage and family life. It takes work. But what an incredible opportunity!  Here’s The Good Stuff! The college price-tag keeps climbing. NTMA Training Centers provide an alternative education route.  The California Manufacturing Workforce Foundation enables students to achieve their goals. Why do parents and teachers continue to look down on trade schools?  Machining trade schools help close the manufacturing skills gap.  Technological advancements in manufacturing are enticing incentives.  The diverse and rich culture of the manufacturing industry.  Machining trade schools offer a promising and lucrative future.  Tools & Takeaways Price of College Increasing Almost 8 Times Faster Than Wages Xometry Design Guides The Boring Bar Newsletter - Text CHIPS to 38470 to subscribe!  This Week’s Superstar Guests: Kurt Preisendanz & Lee Norton Kurt on LinkedIn Lee on LinkedIn NTMA Training Center California Manufacturing Workforce Foundation Connect With MakingChips www.MakingChips.com On Facebook On LinkedIn On Instagram On Twitter On YouTube Subscribe to Making Chips on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, or Spotify

Both Lee and Shirl have both experienced this, not only with craft, but also with raising kids, health issues, and in their jobs! In this week’s podcast, I interviewed Lee Jackson – an international motivational speaker and presentation coach who has written 12 books and since 2017, he has been the president of the Professional Speaking Association in the UK and Ireland. Both Lee and I understand the power of presentation as a tool in getting our messages across to our existing and potential clients and today we talk about some valuable tips and tricks to up our presentation game! In the 30th episode of the Be Your Best in Business™ we talk about how sometimes we need to learn the hard way i.e. Lee started his career talking to a hundreds of students as he started speaking in schools, which made him realise he needed to get good at talking quickly. Lee shares how doing a presentation is not about DELIVERING a script, it is actually about ENGAGING an audience. Without engaging your audience, your presentation will become boring. We also talked about how if you are unable to explain your point to a 6 year old, you don’t really understand it yourself. Lee explained how important it is to avoid loading up too much information on to our presentations, keep the details in the handouts, they’ll read it afterwards. He also talked about how important it is NOT to deliver your presentation the same way everyone else does, this would bore the audience. In this episode, it is always important to consider the audience and how audience always thinks WIIFM (What’s in it for me?). He also talked about how during presentations we need to remember that our SLIDES are never our TALKS. You are the SLIDES, not the TALK and also how important it is to be confident and not hide behind your laptops when doing your presentations. Lastly, Lee shares with us 3 top tips and tricks on how we can improve our presentation skills. They are: Get to the CORE of your message – Figure out what you really want to say. Tell more stories – engage with your audience! Be your 125% -- Be a hundred percent you on the stage, BUT be 25% bigger because you are doing a presentation.   Golden Nugget Round Question 1 – What would you tell your 25 Year Old Self? Learn how to shoot better at basketball, AND not to be so bothered with what people think about you. Question 2 – What would you lecture at University today? Presentation skills – I might also lecture something about the mindset, i.e. resilience and mindset. BUT if I am not in this career, I might lecture about Anthropology. Question 3 – What was your biggest investment or financial decision? My best non-financial decision is investing in myself, my friends, and in my family. The best financial decision I made is to live without credit, we live within our means. Guest Details To contact Lee, feel free to visit his website at http://leejackson.biz. We need to loosen up, stop taking ourselves too seriously, and start thinking what is good for our audience. –Lee Jackson Doing a presentation is NOT about delivering a speech BUT it is ENGAGING your audience! –Lee Jackson If you can’t explain your point to a six year old, you really don’t understand it. –Lee Jackson To get good at presenting, it is important to know what the audience really wants. –Lee Jackson Invest in relationships, not in things! –Lee Jackson

3D Printed Miniature Roller Coaster – Coaster-track.com – Ep40 Lee Williams and Steve Guilmetter are the founders of coaster-track.com. Their invention is a miniature roller coaster that consists of mostly common hardware parts but also some 3D printed parts. The coaster is a fully functional mini replica. Both Lee and Steve are mechanical engineers that have a passion for roller coasters. Their business plan for this is to make 80% of it open source. Meaning, they will give away 80% of the information needed to build a track. The only thing you will need to purchase are the rail ties and the car. Right now, they are 3D printing these 2 components. Their next step is to launch a Kickstarter campaign. Their goal is to raise $50,000 to pay for injection molding tooling for the rail ties and maybe the car. The campaign will launch September 5. I will send out a link once I have it. We discuss their background, the inspiration for the coaster, and how they went about designing and building it. Personal ties bind filmmakers to movie Precious

http://www.thegrio.com/2009/11/personal-ties-bind-makers-to-movie-precious.php The film "Precious" stars newcomer Gabourey Sidebe, who plays an illiterate teenage girl from Harlem, New York, whose story of repeated sexual abuse at the hands of her father and mother will send viewers on an emotional journey. Based on the novel "Push," the story is one that captured readers and the film's creators more than a decade ago. "Both Lee and I read the book," executive producer Lisa Cortes told TheGrio. "We weren't making films at that time, but both of us loved it and talked about it incessantly." Cortes and director Lee Daniels convinced "Push" author Sapphire that only they could tell this story of abuse, survival and hope. "I'm still pinching myself when I think of the places around the world where this film has been received so warmly," Cortes said. "Sapphire was comfortable with Lee," screenplay writer Geoffrey Fletcher said. "Once he gained her trust and confidence, then it was off to the races." Precious' story comes alive with an all-star cast, including Lenny Kravitz and Paula Patton. They are stars that shine because of their ability to lose themselves in dark, disturbing roles. Grammy award-winning artist Mariah Carey is Precious' social worker. "With Mariah," Fletcher said. "I really think that when you see this performance here, I think it's a clear window into the reason why she has the following she does. It is her humanity that we see here. She's very sensitive, very alert and very humble." Most frightening is Mo'nique, as the mother. "What's surprising about Mo'nique in 'Precious,' is that you don't see Mo'nique," Cortes said. "You don't for a moment see 'The Parkers.' You don't see the comedian that we know and love. You see Mary, a woman who is as much a victim as she is a perpetrator." Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry partnered to executive produce the film with hopes of giving this tale the Hollywood success story it deserves. Recounting his own history of abuse, Perry said 'Precious' is a story that needs to be heard. "I realized how close the story was to my childhood and I had to get involved," executive producer Tyler Perry said. "Monique's character was my father. And I wanted people to understand, see and know that this is a movie that will change lives." "So for every voiceless person that we all do not recognize, this film gives them a voice," Cortes said. "It sheds light on their humanity and it sheds light on the tremendous possibility that the precious boys and girls have."
