Brick and mortar shopping has more options, for those who take a chance.By Dj mac1031. Listen to the Podcast at Steamy Stories. This Adult Store was classier than the others he'd visited in the past; clean, well lit, and located in a nicer part of the city than most. The clientele was certainly better; a smattering of well-dressed businessmen and women as opposed to the bald, overweight, sweaty looking slobs who usually frequented some of these establishments. As I browsed the display racks filled with silicone vaginas, prostate stimulators and cock rings, I couldn't shake my feelings of shame and embarrassment. But it had been over a year since my divorce, longer still since the last time I'd gotten laid, and I was getting pretty bored with standard masturbation."Just pick something," I chided myself, "pick something, pay for it and get the fuck out of here. Who gives a fuck what these people think? You'll never see any of them again anyway."Finally, I settled on a rather pricey but realistic looking cunt and ass combo supposedly modeled directly from the anatomy of a porn star whose name I recognized and found attractive.I was wondering to myself how much the mold actually mattered, because ultimately I'd still just be fucking a piece of lubed up silicone, when I plowed right into her.I'd been looking down, trying to hide my face as I approached the counter, already fishing my wallet out of my back pocket so I could cut down how long I had to spend checking out, and never saw her. Both of us let out a yelp at the collision, and the packages we'd each been holding fell to the floor with a clatter.I knew it was a woman more by the feel of her as we'd collided than by sight, and I actively avoided looking at her as I bent down to scoop up both our items.Along with my fake plastic cunt, I found myself picking up a package containing a long, very realistic looking silicone penis, complete with testicles. The label proclaimed in large, bold letters, "Life-like feel, Vibrates! U S B rechargeable! Provides hours of pleasure!"I stood up, trying to brace myself for the humiliation of having to apologize while holding the toy I was planning on masturbating with later."I'm so, "My eyes met hers as I finished standing. "Sorry."She was stunning. Probably a little younger than I; late thirties, early forties, but certainly no older than that. Her straight, fine, chestnut brown hair framed the almost perfect oval of her face with a casual, flowing style, a few random strands hanging loosely over her shapely, rounded cheekbones. If she'd had to color her hair, it didn't show. Her sloping nose tapered to a fine point above her thin yet full pink lips. Her make-up was effective enough to highlight her features without disguising her maturity. But it was her dark brown eyes that captured me. In them, I saw the same fear, embarrassment and humiliation probably reflected in my own eyes, along with a hint of something else I couldn't quite place."It was my fault," she was saying in a sweet yet slightly shaky voice."No, my fault, I wasn't watching where I was going," I countered, trying to be chivalrous while at the same time wanting to simply run and hide.Instead, I stood frozen, staring at her eyes. Her deep, dark eyes. She was speaking. I didn't hear her. "I'm sorry, what?" I said, snapping out of my trance."Um, can I have my, package?" She was struggling to be nonchalant about it, but the flush of her face told a different story."Oh, right. Sorry," I said, handing her the phallic sex toy.We stood silently staring at each other until she finally broke into a foolish grin. "I've probably been in a more embarrassing situation than this before," she chuckled nervously, "but I certainly can't remember when."I found myself laughing as well. "Hey, look, we're both adults. We all have needs. We're supposed to be beyond being ashamed of this by now, aren't we?" I tried to say it with enough casualness that I might actually convince her that I believed my own words. Her laugh became lighter, more genuine. "Yeah, I suppose you're right."Her twinkling eyes fixed on me for a moment, then glanced at the box in my hand featuring the naked porn star with legs agape, alongside the image of the toy replica of her most intimate area, and gave me a wry smile. "Well, enjoy your evening, I suppose.""You too," I called after her stupidly as she headed towards the counter to pay for her new dildo."Fucking idiot!" I cursed myself under my breath, then turned back to the racks.I couldn't go pay for my toy now, not until I was sure she'd checked out and was gone.I found myself staring at a shelf filled with BDSM items of all shapes and sizes, things I'd never be interested in using in a thousand years, for several long minutes.I was just about to brave looking towards the register to see if she was gone when I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was her.Her face was passive, unreadable. But her eyes. Her eyes spoke volumes."Come with me." Without waiting for a reply, she reached out and took the box I was still holding from my hands, put it on a random shelf, then grabbed my hand and led me towards the back of the store.Towards the video booth section. As we brushed past the curtain and entered the shadowy hall, I finally found my voice. "What are you doing? Why are we, "Her head whipped around and her eyes glared at me, not with anger so much as with a sharp intent that told me to just shut the fuck up.So I did. As she continued to pull me down the hall, looking for an unoccupied booth, I noticed her free hand still clutching both her purse and the bag that must contain her newly purchased toy.I also noticed the hand holding mine wore no wedding ring. The sounds of sex echoed all around us, coming from the various video booths. She finally found an empty one and pulled me in behind her, closing the door. The booth was almost completely dark. Reaching into her purse, she came out with a handful of quarters and started plugging them into the slot."What are you, " I tried again, but she cut me off."Do me a favor. Just shut up. Don't ask questions. Don't ruin this," she snapped as the video screen lit up, illuminating the tiny booth in a dim, flickering light as a random porn started to play on the screen. We were now standing face to face, so close her full, rounded breasts were pressed against my chest. As attractive as her body was, feminine curves highlighted in her form fitting yet modest summer dress, it was her eyes that still continued to draw my gaze. They looked back at me with determination. "You're right," she said, "we're both adults. And we both, very obviously, have needs. I'm only going to ask this once. A yes or no will do. Don't ask anything else. Now, do you want me?"I didn't hesitate. "Yes."Her almost stern look loosened and her face relaxed a bit as she smiled. Then she was on her knees and undoing my jeans. She wasted no time in sliding them down along with my boxers with one swift yank, revealing my cock.To my horror, I was completely flaccid. Her eyes, her deep, soulful eyes, looked up at me expectantly. "You can do better than this, right?""Sorry," I stammered. "I'm just, nervous. Wasn't ready or expecting, "What silenced me this time was the feel of her hand as she took my soft member and guided it to her lips. Her tongue darted out playfully for a few moments, licking my tip, before her lips enveloped me, sucking my soft member into her mouth.I looked down to watch her work and again our eyes met. She was doing an amazing job sucking me, her tongue dancing over my shaft as she gulped and slurped greedily. But it was the lustful look in her smoldering eyes that finally got the blood flowing to the right place.I felt myself starting to swell in her mouth. Her gulps quickly became gags as my erection grew, and I saw a grin start to form on the lips now struggling to stretch around my rapidly expanding girth.Saliva dripped from her chin as she finally released my now fully erect cock from her lips with a wet plop. She eyed it lustfully. "Now that's more like it!"She stood quickly, reached into her bag, and pulled out a box of condoms she must have just purchased along with her dildo. Ripping open the box, she handed one to me. "Put it on."While I put the condom on, she slid the straps of her dress off her shoulders then pulled the front down, freeing her breasts. Despite their size and fullness, she'd worn no bra. Her large, hard nipples spoke to her aroused state.Seeing that I'd gotten the condom in place, she quickly turned her back to me, reached under her skirt, yanked down her panties, stepped deftly out of them, and stuffed them in her purse. She then bent forward, presenting her hips towards me, and lifted her skirt. Her ass was rounded and full, fleshed out but not fatty, no cellulite to be seen. The milky curves came together over her plump, pink vulva, covered in fine brown hairs. Her grooming there spoke of a woman who continued to maintain things, but had given up on the more intricate forms of removing hair from delicate places in favor of a more natural look, figuring no one would see the results anyway. Her thick labia were already swollen, moisture glistening between them. I could smell the strong scent of her arousal.Placing both hands up against the wall of the booth, she bent forward as best she could and spread her legs enough to give me full access. She turned her head over her shoulder and again her dark eyes met mine as she implored, "Just fuck me. Fuck me now. Fuck me hard. And don't hold back."I didn't think. I just obeyed. I paused only long enough to line up the throbbing, swollen head of my now raging hard-on with the gaping, slick opening of her cunt before plunging in to the hilt. Her gasp, a mix of pain and pleasure, echoed in the tiny booth. "Fuck, that's DEEP!"My hands grabbed her hips and I began pounding her; no warm up, no teasing, no gentle foreplay. And no mercy. Pulling out to the tip on every stroke out, slamming balls deep on every thrust in, the entire booth shook violently as I fucked her with all my might."That's it," she gasped. "Harder! Fuck me harder! Yes! Right there! Fuck! Don't stop! Don't you fucking stop! Fuck me! Fuck me!"Letting go of her hips, I grasped a handful of her hair in my fist and pulled her head back, then turned it towards me. I wanted her to watch me fuck her, I wanted to see the lust in those dark, smokey eyes."That's right, pull my hair," she purred. "Fuck me rough. Fuck me like a whore."I locked eyes with her as I continued to tug her hair. I lifted my free hand above my head, holding it there just long enough for her to register my intent before bringing it back down with a crack across her padded ass.She yelped repeatedly each time I spanked her, switching from one side to the other, leaving angry red marks on her bottom.A slew of filth and profanity flowed nonstop from her soft, supple lips. "Yes, spank my ass! Ouch! Fuck, that hurts! Do it again! Yes! Fuck yes! Now pound me harder! Fuck my cunt! I can feel that cock! That fucking big cock! So fucking deep! Harder! Harder! Right there! Yes! Oh yes, that cock's gonna make me cum! Oh, yes, yes, yes!"Her words became wails as I felt her cunt tighten, then gush with a warm spring of slick fluids, flowing out around my shaft, coating the latex condom in shimmering streams of thick white cream.I slowed and eventually stopped, needing a moment to cool off. There was no air conditioning in the booth, and I was now soaked in sweat. My heart was racing like a jackhammer.I looked down at my shaft, still poised at the opening of her now dripping vagina, and saw it still coated in her thick cream. Without thinking, I reached down and scooped some up, bringing my sticky fingers to my nose to inhale her, then to my lips to taste. Both were utterly divine."Why did you, stop?" she asked, panting heavily."Needed to, catch my breath," I gasped. "I'm not as young as I used to be."Her face relented, showing me some sympathy. But her eyes said she wasn't done with me just yet.Straightening up somewhat, she took my arms and wrapped them around her, placing my hands on her swollen breasts. I could feel her heart racing beneath them. Her nipples were swollen, and she cooed softly as I pulled and twisted them with my fingers. She turned her head towards me, her face so close that I could smell the tobacco from the cigarette she must have smoked before coming in here on her breath. Her skin shone with perspiration."You're not done, are you?"Instead of answering, I crouched down enough to once again poise my cock at her entrance."Good, oh good," she purred as she reached between her legs and guided me back inside her.Her hand remained there, working her clit, as I began to thrust. In this position I could not manage long strokes, so instead my cock remained buried deep in her cunt as I rocked my hips back and forth against her ass.

Liver shunts (technically called portosystemic shunts) are not that common in dogs, but if you are an aficionado of certain breeds or if your dog develops liver disease, you may find yourself in desperate need of information. Read on to learn all about liver shunts in dogs. What Is a Liver Shunt? First, we need to review some canine anatomy and physiology. A network of veins (called the portal system) drains blood away from the digestive tract. This blood carries nutrients, hormones, and waste material and is supposed to enter the liver before it travels to the rest of the body. The liver takes what it needs to function properly and also detoxifies the blood before sending it onward. A shunt is defined as a passage “that allows the flow of materials between two structures that are not usually connected.” A portosystemic shunt is, specifically, an abnormal blood vessel (or vessels) that connects the “portal” system draining the digestive tract to the “systemic” circulatory system feeding the rest of the body, thereby bypassing the liver. Causes of Liver Shunts in Dogs Liver shunts can be divided into two categories: those that are present at birth (congenital shunts) and those that develop later in life (acquired shunts). Congenital shunts are most common, being responsible for approximately 80 percent of cases. Dogs are usually quite young (less than 3 years old) when they start experiencing symptoms. A genetic cause is known for some breeds and suspected in others. Breeds at higher than average risk for congenital liver shunts include the Yorkshire Terrier, Dachshund, Maltese, Miniature Schnauzer, Lhasa Apso, Bichon Frise, Shih Tzu, Havanese, Toy and Miniature Poodle, Pekingese, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Irish Wolfhound, Old English Sheepdog, Samoyed, Irish Setter, Labrador Retriever, Doberman Pinscher, Golden Retriever, and German Shepherd. Acquired shunts typically develop when blood pressure within the veins connecting the digestive tract to the liver becomes elevated—most often because of diseases that cause liver scarring (cirrhosis). Dogs with acquired liver shunts tend to experience symptoms when they are older in comparison to those diagnosed with congenital shunts. Symptoms of Liver Shunts in Dogs Dogs with liver shunts generally have some combination of the following symptoms: Poor growth (congenital shunts) Poor appetite and/or eating unusual things Weight loss Increased thirst and urination Difficulty urinating or blood in the urine due to the formation of bladder stones Vomiting, which may contain blood Diarrhea, which may contain blood Behavioral changes like mental dullness, staring vacantly, poor vision, unsteadiness, circling, and head pressing Diagnosing Liver Shunts in Dogs These symptoms are obviously not unique to liver shunts. A veterinarian will start the diagnostic process by taking a complete health history, performing a physical examination, and running some basic tests such as blood work and a urinalysis. If he or she thinks that a liver shunt is likely, additional testing will be necessary to reach a definitive diagnosis. Possibilities include bile acid tests, blood ammonia levels, abdominal X-rays, abdominal ultrasound, and advanced imaging studies. Your veterinarian can discuss the pros and cons of each test with you based on the specifics of your dog's case. Treatment for Liver Shunts in Dogs The type of liver shunt that a dog has and their age and overall condition determines what type of treatment is best. Most small breed dogs who have congenital shunts have just one abnormal blood vessel that is located outside of the liver. These are the most amenable to surgical correction. A single shunt that is located within the liver itself is more common in large breed dogs. These are still usually best treated with surgery, but the procedure is a little more difficult. Dogs with acquired shunts tend to have multiple, abnormal vessels and may be poorer candidates for surgery due to their underlying illness. Surgery for liver shunts centers on blocking the flow of blood through the abnormal vessels so that more of it travels through the liver. This can involve the application of devices specifically designed to do this (e.g., ameroid constrictors or cellophane bands) or tying off the vessels with suture material. Oftentimes, the abnormal vessels cannot be completely blocked off all at once without the dog developing serious side effects like intestinal damage. Ameroid constrictors and cellophane bands are designed to get around this problem since they cause the vessel to narrow over time, which gives the body a chance to adjust. Medical management for liver shunts can be used to improve a dog's condition prior to surgery, when surgery is not in a dog's best interests, or when surgery is unable to entirely correct the problem. Veterinarians typically prescribe a diet that has just enough protein for the dog but no “extra,” which reduces the byproducts of protein digestion (e.g., ammonia) that can make a dog's symptoms worse. Research indicates that soy protein may be a better option in comparison to meat-based sources of protein. Feeding several smaller meals throughout the day is also beneficial. Medications also play an important role in the medical management of liver shunts. Antibiotics are prescribed to reduce the number of bacteria in the gut, and enemas can be given to physically remove feces and bacteria from the colon. Oral lactulose, a type of indigestible sugar, is used to encourage rapid transit of stool through the intestinal tract and to lower the pH within the gut, which reduces the absorption of ammonia. Prognosis for Liver Shunts in Dogs Approximately one-third of dogs with liver shunts can be successfully managed with dietary changes and medications, according to Dr. Karen Tobias, professor of small animal soft tissue surgery and a board-certified surgeon at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Dogs who have liver shunts that are located outside of the liver and that are surgically corrected using ameroid constrictors or cellophane bands have the best prognosis, with around 85 percent being clinically normal several months after surgery, according to Tobias. In comparison, dogs with shunts that are located within the liver have a greater risk of complications although many still do very well after surgery.

Twice yearly elk migrations occur as large bunches of elk move out of the park and make a pit stop in Estes Park. Traffic jams occur as the elk cross streets or from gawking tourists trying to get pictures of these massive animals bedded down in residents' front yards to experience the golf course closed as it is a favorite hangout for the elk. The migration is not a quick one either, can take a couple of weeks as the various bunches move leisurely. The fall migration is a must-see as the massive bulls are herding the females but it is to be viewed with caution. The rut is on and the bulls can be aggressive. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a degenerative disease that can affect your dog's spinal cord and causes a range of painful mobility issues. What is IVDD? Intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) in dogs can also be described as a ruptured, slipped, bulging or herniated disk. This condition is most commonly seen in beagles, dachshunds, Pekingese, Shih Tzus, basset hounds, or American cocker spaniels but may occur in dogs of any breed. What causes IVDD in dogs? Intervertebral Disc Disease is an age-related, gradual degenerative process that affects the spinal cord of the dog over a period of time, often undetected. Even with yearly wellness exams, your vet may not detect any signs of IVDD until your dog's hardened disc or discs become ruptured and painful symptoms become evident. Something as every day as a jump up onto the sofa could damage a disc that has been weakened by IVDD, and trigger acute and painful symptoms of the disease. IVDD occurs when the shock-absorbing discs between your dog's vertebrae gradually begin to harden until they are unable to cushion the vertebrae properly. The hardened discs will typically go on to bulge and compress the spinal cord, often damaging the dog's nerve impulses such as those that control bladder and bowel control. In other cases, a simple jump or poor landing can lead one or more of the hardened discs to burst and press into the nerves of the dog's spinal cord causing pain, possible nerve damage or even paralysis. What are the symptoms of IVDD in dogs? Intervertebral Disc Disease can occur in any of the discs in your dog's spine and symptoms of this condition will depend upon which part of the spine is affected, and how severe the damage is. Symptoms of IVDD may also appear suddenly or come on gradually. If your dog is displaying any of the following symptoms seek veterinary care as soon as possible. IVDD can be very painful for dogs and early treatment is essential for preventing the condition from becoming more severe or causing irreversible damage to your dog's spine. Symptoms of Neck Intervertebral Disc Disease (Cervical IVDD) Cervical IVDD occurs in the discs of the dog's neck. If you may notice one or more of the following symptoms, which can affect the whole body and range from mild to very severe contact your vet for immediate advice, or visit your closest animal emergency hospital for veterinary care: Head held low Arching back Shivering or crying Reluctance to move Unsteadiness in all 4 legs Inability to walk normally Knuckling of all 4 paws Inability to support own weight Inability to stand Inability to feel all 4 feet and legs Symptoms of Back Intervertebral Disc Disease (Thoracolumbar IVDD) Dogs with Thoracolumbar IVDD have a damaged disc causing issues in their back region and may display one or more of the following symptoms. Symptoms of Thoracolumbar IVDD mainly affect the mid to back portion of the dog's body and can range from mild to very severe: Muscle spasms Tense belly Weakness in hind legs Crossing back legs when walking Inability to walk normally Knuckling of back paws, or dragging rear legs Inability to support their own weight Unable to move or feel back legs Symptoms of Lower-Back Intervertebral Disc Disease (Lumbosacral IVDD) If your dog is suffering from lumbosacral IVDD the problematic disc or discs are located in your dog's lower back region. Symptoms of lumbosacral IVDD typically affect the very back of the dog's body and may range from mild to very severe: Pain and/or difficulty jumping Limp tail Urinary or fecal incontinence Dilated anus How is IVDD diagnosed in dogs? If your dog begins showing any of the above symptoms immediate veterinary care is required. Tests for diagnosing Intervertebral Disc Disease typically include standard x-rays, a neurological exam, and/or MRI to help locate the disc or discs causing your dog's symptoms. What is the treatment for IVDD? The diagnosis and treatment for Intervertebral Disc Disease needs to begin as early as possible in order to achieve good treatment outcomes. That's why we recommend taking your dog to the vet for a full examination if you spot signs of IVDD in your dog. Delays in treatment could lead to irreversible damage. Anti-Inflammatory Medications If your dog is diagnosed with a mild to moderate IVDD injury, treatment may include steroid and anti-inflammatory medications to help reduce pain and swelling, combined with strictly reduced activity for approximately 4 -6 weeks Surgery Surgery is typically recommended for dogs suffering from more severe cases of Intervertebral Disc Disease where rest and medication are not sufficient to reduce pain and other symptoms. During surgery, your dog's veterinary surgeon will remove the hardened disc material which is pressing on your dog's spinal cord and causing the IVDD symptoms. Surgery outcomes are most successful in dogs that have not lost their ability to walk. If your dog's surgery is not successful in returning your pet to normal mobility, a dog wheelchair can help your pup to enjoy a happy and active life while living with Intervertebral Disc Disease. Recovery from IVDD surgery requires 6 - 8 weeks of restricted activity. Running, climbing stairs, playing with other dogs, or jumping on furniture need to be prevented in order to avoid further damage as your dog's spine heals. Physical Therapy Following surgery, your vet may also recommend physical therapy for your dog in order to work on muscle strengthening and to help get your pet moving comfortably again.

Hailing from Palm Springs, California, this six-year-old male became the first of his breed to achieve this esteemed honor. Originally bred for hare tracking in the Vendee region of western France, Buddy Holly's triumph marks a significant milestone for the petit basset griffon Vendeen breed. Janice Hayes, Buddy Holly's co-owner and handler, expressed her astonishment at their victory, stating, "I never thought PBGV would do this. Buddy Holly truly embodies the essence of a champion show dog." Each breed showcased at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show represents the culmination of years of artificial selection, carefully refining and enhancing specific traits inherited from their ancestral wolves. The competition's participants were classified into seven distinct groups to determine the ultimate best in show finalists: hound, toy, non-sporting, herding, sporting, working, and terrier. Buddy Holly emerged as the winner of the hound group, showcasing his exemplary qualities within his breed. The runner-up, receiving the prize for reserve best in show, was awarded to Rummie, a Pekingese from the toy group. Bred and owned by David Fitzpatrick, Rummie demonstrated the exceptional characteristics that epitomize the breed. The judges meticulously evaluated the dogs by examining them up close, physically interacting with them, and observing how the handlers led them around the floor. The dogs were assessed based on breed standards, including appearance, temperament, size, coat, and other defining characteristics. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which traces its origins back to 1877, has grown into a highly anticipated annual event and a staple on television broadcasts. This year, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the show took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, the site of the renowned U.S. Open tennis tournament. In previous years, the event was traditionally held at Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan but was relocated to a smaller venue at Lyndhurst Mansion as a precautionary measure. Buddy Holly's groundbreaking victory not only solidifies his place in dog show history but also serves as an inspiration to future generations of petit basset griffon Vendeen enthusiasts. Reference article:https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/dog-named-buddy-holly-is-first-its-breed-win-westminster-show-2023-05-10/ https://tw.stock.yahoo.com/news/%E5%9C%96%E8%BC%AF-%E7%8B%97%E7%95%8C%E5%A5%A7%E6%96%AF%E5%8D%A1-%E8%A5%BF%E6%95%8F%E5%AF%BA%E7%8A%AC%E5%B1%95%E7%99%BB%E5%A0%B4-%E9%80%99%E9%9A%BB%E6%AF%9B%E5%AD%A9%E9%A6%96%E5%A5%AA%E5%86%A0-095309716.html Powered by Firstory Hosting
A petit basset griffon Vendéen, or PBGV, won top prize at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in New York City Tuesday. The dog, called Buddy Holly, won the award for best in show. The breed he represents is known for its rabbit-hunting ability. Buddy Holly defeated six other candidates to take the prize at the most famous dog show in the United States. This year's event was held at the U.S.T.A. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. 今年的活动在 U.S.T.A. 举行。纽约比利简金国家网球中心。“I never thought a PBGV would do this,” handler and co-owner Janice Hayes said. “Buddy Holly is the epitome of a show dog. Nothing bothers him.” His competitors included Rummie, a Pekingese that came in second. His owner and handler, David Fitzpatrick, breeds the small dogs. Rummie is, in Fitzpatrick's words “true to Pekingese type, lots of carriage, presence — everything in one, here.” Winston the French bulldog was also seeking the best in show prize, after coming close last year. An Australian shepherd named Ribbon, an English setter called Cider, a giant schnauzer named Monty and an American Staffordshire terrier called Trouble also were in the final group of competitors.“我从没想过 PBGV 会这样做,”饲养员兼共同所有人 Janice Hayes 说。 If Buddy Holly was feeling the pressure, he did not show it ahead of the finals. He spent the late day playing with his people and rejecting any proposal that he take a rest before the final competition. “He just screams PBGV,” Hayes said, noting that the breed is independent and full of fun. “Their goal is to make you laugh every day,” she said. The breed began in France. The American Kennel Club says the small hounds are the 154th most common purebreds in the U.S. Buddy Holly has also lived and competed in Britain, Ireland and Australia. About 2,500 dogs competed at Westminster this year. The show also includes obedience and agility competitions that are open to mixed-breed dogs. And what is next for Buddy Holly? A good night's sleep, “upside down, rolling in pillows,” Hayes said. “He just gets to go back to being a dog.”
In this pick-me-up episode, we introduce you to the characters, companions, clowns, and survivors that are the dogs of the Toy group. Once seen as symbols of royalty and aristocracy, dogs of the Toy group were often the coveted spoils of revolutions, war, and palace coups. The refined elegance and charm of these compact dogs assisted in their survival and solidified their place in many decidedly non-royal homes of today. Join us as we look at how favorite breeds of kings, queens, monarchs, and fashionistas both plummeted and soared in popularity. Bonafide Bits: Chihuahuas, originally named Techichis, were kept by the Toltecs to guide their human companions into the afterlife. Both Pekingese and Maltese are referred to as “lion dogs.” Aristotle called the elegant Maltese perfectly proportioned. In 1926, Roswell Eldridge Esquire offered a hefty purse to breeders who could replicate toy Spaniels of King Charles' time. In the 1500s, Dutch traders smuggled Pugs out of China where they would become mascots in Holland's House of Orange. Featured Breeds: Pekingese Pekingese are compact, stocky toy dogs weighing up to 14 pounds. The coat is longest at the neck and shoulders, giving Pekes their famous “lion's mane.” Coats come in various reds, from golden red to darker shades. The large, short-muzzled head is a wider-than-long, envelope-shaped rectangle, and the eyes are large, dark, and sparkly. A unique feature of Pekes is their effortless “rolling” gait. Pekes are charming, confident companions who develop a tight bond with their favorite human. Bred to live in palaces, they can be as serenely independent as the emperors who owned them. (They're “opinionated,” Peke people say.) Ever alert, they make good watchdogs. Pekes will tolerate kids but won't stand for a lot of roughhousing. Discover more about Pekingese at AKC's Pekingese Breed Biography. Chihuahua The Chihuahua is a balanced, graceful dog of terrier-like demeanor, weighing no more than six pounds. The rounded “apple” head is a breed hallmark. The erect ears and full, luminous eyes are acutely expressive. Coats come in many colors and patterns and can be long or short. The varieties are identical except for the coat. Chihuahuas possess loyalty, charm, and a big-dog attitude. Even tiny dogs require training, and without it, this clever scamp will rule your household like a little Napoleon. Compact and confident, Chihuahuas are ideal city pets. They are too small for roughhousing with kids, and special care must be taken in cold weather, but Chihuahuas are adaptable as long as they get lots of quality time in their preferred lap. Discover more about Chihuahuas at AKC's Chihuahua Breed Biography. Maltese The tiny Maltese, “Ye Ancient Dogge of Malta,” has been sitting in the lap of luxury since the Bible was a work in progress. Famous for their show-stopping, floor-length coat, Maltese are playful, charming, and adaptable toy companions. Discover more about Malteses at AKC's Maltese Breed Biography. Papillon The quick, curious Papillon is a toy dog of singular beauty and upbeat athleticism. Despite his refined appearance, the Pap is truly a “doggy dog” blessed with a hardy constitution. Papillon fanciers describe their breed as happy, alert, and friendly. A tiny dog, measuring 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder, you can still spot a Papillon a block away thanks to the large, wing-shaped ears that give the breed its name (“papillon” is French for “butterfly”). Some Paps have erect ears; in others, known as the Phalene type, the ears are down. Paps are dainty and elegant, with a plumed tail, and a long, silky coat of several color combinations, the base color being white. More robust than they look, Paps are little dogs for all seasons and reasons. They thrive in warm or cool climates, in town or country, and are eager to join the family fun. They are excellent agility dogs and are consistent winners at the sport's highest levels; less ambitious owners can train them to do all kinds of tricks. Discover more about Papillons at AKC's Papillon Breed Biography. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel wears his connection to British history in his breed's name. Cavaliers are the best of two worlds, combining the gentle attentiveness of a toy breed with the verve and athleticism of a sporting spaniel. Discover more about Cavalier King Charles Spaniels at AKC's King Charles Spaniel Breed Biography. English Toy Spaniel The ETS is a square, snub-nosed toy weighing no more than 14 pounds. The large domed head with its long and lush ears, dark melting eyes, and chubby cheeks is a famous breed trait. The profuse coat comes in four varieties, each with its own proper name: red and white (Blenheim); black and tan (King Charles); white, black, and tan (Prince Charles); and a solid red (Ruby). Blenheims often have a red mark, the 'Blenheim Spot,' on top of the head. The ETS, like many toy breeds kept by royals, came to assume the personalities of their aristocratic owners. They can be proud and willful, and extremely discriminating in their choice of friends. With their favored humans, they are affectionate at home and exuberant and curious at play. Discover more about English Toy Spaniels at AKC's English Toy Spaniel Breed Biography. Pug Once the mischievous companion of Chinese emperors, and later the mascot of Holland's royal House of Orange, the small but solid Pug is today adored by his millions of fans around the world. Pugs live to love and to be loved in return. The Pug's motto is the Latin phrase “multum in parvo” (a lot in a little), an apt description of this small but muscular breed. They come in three colors: silver or apricot-fawn with a black face mask, or all black. The large round head, the big, sparkling eyes, and the wrinkled brow give Pugs a range of human-like expressions, such as surprise, happiness, and curiosity that have delighted owners for centuries. Pug owners say their breed is the ideal house dog. Pugs are happy in the city or country, with kids or old folks, as an only pet, or in a pack. They enjoy their food, and care must be taken to keep them trim. They do best in moderate climates “not too hot, not too cold” but, with proper care, Pugs can be their adorable selves anywhere. Discover more about Pugs at AKC's Pug Breed Biography. Italian Greyhound A true Greyhound in miniature, the elegant Italian Greyhound is an alert, playful, and highly affectionate toy companion. IGs make decorative couch dogs, but at heart, they are flash-and-dash coursing hounds with an instinct for pursuit. Discover more about Italian Greyhounds at AKC's Italian Greyhound Breed Biography. Silky Terrier Small but not fragile, feisty but not yappy, pretty but not sculpted, Silkys are 10-inch-tall dynamos animated by curiosity and high spirits. The glorious blue-and-tan coat is straight and glossy, and it feels and behaves much like human hair. The wedge-shaped head is topped by profuse hair parted down the middle, and erect V-shaped ears draw attention to the keen, piercing expression of the almond-shaped eyes. Silky Terriers are more refined than typical ratting terriers, but they should still look and behave like a true earth dog. Discover more about Silky Terriers at AKC's Silky Terrier Breed Biography. Yorkshire Terrier Beneath the dainty, glossy, floor-length coat of a Yorkshire Terrier beats the heart of a feisty, old-time terrier. Yorkies earned their living as ratters in mines and mills long before they became the beribboned lapdogs of Victorian ladies. The Yorkshire Terrier is a compact, toy-size terrier of no more than seven pounds whose crowning glory is a floor-length, silky coat of steel blue and a rich golden tan. Don't let the Yorkie's daintiness fool you. Tenacious, feisty, brave, and sometimes bossy, the Yorkie exhibits all the traits of a true terrier. Often named the most popular dog breed in various American cities, Yorkies pack lots of big-town attitude into a small but self-important package. They are favorites of urbanites the world over. Yorkies are long-lived and hypoallergenic (the coat is more like human hair than animal fur), and they make fine little watchdogs. This is a true “personality breed,” providing years of laughs, love, and close companionship. Discover more about Yorkshire Terriers at AKC's Yorkshire Terrier Breed Biography. Pomeranian The tiny Pomeranian, long a favorite of royals and commoners alike, has been called the ideal companion. The glorious coat, smiling, foxy face, and vivacious personality have helped make the Pom one of the world's most popular toy breeds. Discover more about Pomeranians at AKC's Pomeranian Breed Biography. For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org. Shareables: If you see a pack of Pugs, you have seen a grumble. During a storm at sea, King James II of England requested his Spaniels be saved before adding that the rescuers should also save his son. As a symbol of affluence in ancient Rome, upper-crust Patrician women flaunted Maltese as fashion accessories.
Applied Structure and Anatomy LIVE Join the live studio audience with host Laura Reeves at Bonneville Basin Kennel Association to discuss why our dogs are built the way they're built. Laura and members of the audience address structure and why our dogs are built the way they're built. Form and Function go together There are a lot of differences between herding dogs, depending on the type of herding they did, according to AKC judge and Pumi breeder Chris Levy. Tonia Holibaugh Cruz A lot of people think “oh it's a toy dog, structure doesn't matter.” What happens is that as companions, these dogs need to be able to live to 10 or 11 years old and still be able to make it to the food bowl. Your expectations of a Pekingese cannot be the same as your expectations of an Italian Greyhound. Even though they're all toy breeds, their purpose is completely different. The construction is different, therefore their abilities (are different.) Linda Culver A properly constructed Italian Greyhound can be just as sturdy as a Whippet Carma Ewer I love to see a beautiful schnauzer moving around the ring with great reach and drive, but you don't have to have great reach and drive to kill a rate. We are starting to lose some of our other qualities. We have to have strong teeth, muzzle and head to be able to do the job. You need to have good bone, muscle tone, don't want the rat pulling your dog in the hole because it's so weedy. Lydia Hovanski Lyon Tail placement on these terriers is so important. My Fox Terrier, when it goes to ground, and it's pulling out a fox, I have to be able to grab it by the tail and pull it out, to help it. If we can't grab onto those tails, that dog is useless and going to die. With the dogs that are going to ground, it is essential to pick them up by their tail. It's showing they can do the job. Dr. Donald Sturz on Building Community and Continuing Education Don Sturz, psychologist by day, dog show judge on the weekend, provides insight on safe space at the dog show and the importance of continual learning. [caption id="attachment_10422" align="alignleft" width="349"] Dr. Donal Sturz' first time at Westminster Kennel Club when he was 10 years old.[/caption] Sturz has discussed being bullied as a child at school and finding dogs and dog shows a “safe space.” He shared his insights on how to make dog shows more welcoming for all exhibitors. “That's something that depends on individuals being able to choose situations that are safe,” Sturz said. “People go into situations without full knowledge and wind up in situations that are toxic. It's up to each individual to know what is their safe space. “I also think clubs should view the dog show as more of a community event, more than just a dog show. Not just the dog show community, but also the community around it. How do we help people have a good time here. “(At) Westminster (Sturz is the AKC delegate for Westminster Kennel Club) the club members think a lot about the exhibitors, what makes it pleasant for them. Clubs should be thinking in terms of the human aspect of this. When the atmosphere is devoid of connection and positivity, the activity itself can get really intense. People's emotions can run high. If you proactively set a tone or atmosphere that is more celebratory, it helps balance that out a little bit. [caption id="attachment_10423" align="alignright" width="334"] Donald Sturz judging Westminster Kennel Club Hound Group in 2006.[/caption] “People get jaded, lost in the fog of yesteryear. If you have the relationship, you can help provide a reality check. These can be meaningful conversations, if you have them with the right tone. It's more inquiry, not confrontation. “I do think one area that is different now, I think people hung around more (in years past). People's lives are busy now. It diminishes the dog show experience (because they don't have time to) watch and sit. People could do more of that. Watching other breeds, having conversations with people from other breeds. “Also, listening. A lot of people like to talk, not a lot of people like to listen. Listening is much more valuable than feeling the need to weigh in.” Sturz described a recent experience attending the Pekingese national, “not even about judging, just a breed that fascinates me. I was like a kid going off to the first day of school." The experience “impacted how I judged. My brain was worked up and tuned in.” Sturz offered his three best tips for how to learn at dog shows. Know who to learn from. This is key. Seek out individuals you don't have a natural connection to. Be clear on the purpose. What are you seeking, what do you want to get? Know yourself as a learner and how you learn.
Noble Consort Gao's dog is the star of these episodes as it first was used by Concubine Pin to scare Noble Lady Yu in hopes of causing a miscarriage. That fortunately failed but the dog became the center of attention once again after Ying Luo used it to misdirect the Emperor's ire when it was revealed that the lychee trees he specifically gifted to the Empress was destroyed. Elsewhere, Consort Xian's desperately seeks money to save her brother who fell in in prison.
In this episode, the artificial intelligence Lexman interviews Gavin Miller, a cosmographer and fury theorist of renown. They discuss Pekingese dogs, genesis myths, and the increasing ventureomeness of humanity.

Grab your fave beverage because my guest Courtney Wells, PhD, and I are about to spill the kombucha on taking down the patriarchy. Courtney is many things, including a licensed clinical psychologist and executive director at Pivot Psychological Services in Chicago, and tamer of two Pekinese. Additionally, they're simply an amazing human with profound insights into dismantling the systemic oppression that leads to self-doubt and wayward searches for validation. Courtney's path towards genuine self-expression informs their approach to trauma work offers a model for societal healing as well as the creation of non-hierarchical, inclusive systems in therapy and beyond. Courtney ascribes to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT. “Destroying the patriarchy is part of ACT therapy where you take on the patriarchy, and then you destroy it,” Courtney laughs. Tongue-in-cheek aside, they credit ACT with undermining establishment principles like grind culture or the “right way” of doing and being. The right way of white supremacy, they point out, “is generally where somebody else benefits from all of your work. You get a little bit, but somebody else benefits greatly from all that you do.” Courtney says that patriarchal forces crush our will under fear of retribution and ostracization, pushing us to favor avoidance at all costs to keep the gears running full steam ahead. ACT can be complicated and requires commitment (as its name implies). The model is “about staying in it with someone long enough to also see what the feeling is that's there or what the internal experience is that's there.” Regardless of model, healing is an evolutionary process, and the more expansive our collective recovery, the stronger our resistance to patriarchal influences. GUEST BIO Dr. Courtney Wells received their BS in Psychology at John Carroll University, their MA in Community Counseling at John Carroll University, and their PhD in Counseling Psychology at Texas Woman's University. In this podcast episode, we gain a better understanding of why dogs play a starring role in thousands of years of human folklore and explore the very real breeds that inspired the stories. Dogs permeate human myth and folklore more than any other creature. Their expansive field of vision, sensitivity to high-pitched sounds, and exceptional gift of sniff could be the reason many myths and legends portray dogs as supersensory guards and protectors of mere mortals. Dogs' roles in human stories reflect neither the good nor the bad of them — rather they demonstrate the central place dogs occupy in our shared consciousness. Bonafide Bits “Dogs of Myth,” a book by Gerald and Loretta Hausman, chronologically captures a treasure trove of dog lore. In Chinese folklore, the Pekingese is known to have the heart of a lion. In Tibet, the Lhasa Apso is the earthly incarnation of the mythical snow lion. Canis Major is the constellation that includes the dog star Sirius, Orion's hunting dog. In Greek mythology, Cerberus is a three-headed dog who guards the underworld of Hades. Featured Breeds Mastiff For the uninitiated, a face-to-face encounter with these black-masked giants can be startling. A male stands at least 30 inches at the shoulder and can outweigh many a full-grown man. The rectangular body is deep and thickly muscled, covered by a short double coat of fawn, apricot, or brindle stripes. The head is broad and massive, and a wrinkled forehead accentuates an alert, kindly expression. Mastiffs are patient, lovable companions and guardians who take best to gentle training. Eternally loyal Mastiffs are protective of family, and a natural wariness of strangers makes early training and socialization essential. Mastiffs are magnificent pets, but acquiring a powerful giant-breed dog is a commitment not to be taken lightly. Discover more about Mastiffs at AKC's Mastiff Breed Biography. Akita Akitas are burly, heavy-boned spitz-type dogs of imposing stature. Standing 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder, Akitas have a dense coat that comes in several colors, including white. The head is broad and massive and is balanced in the rear by a full, curled-over tail. The erect ears and dark, shining eyes contribute to an expression of alertness, a hallmark of the breed. Akitas are quiet, fastidious dogs. Wary of strangers and often intolerant of other animals, Akitas will gladly share their silly, affectionate side with family and friends. They thrive on human companionship. The large, independent-thinking Akita is hardwired for protecting those they love. They must be well socialized from birth with people and other dogs. Discover more about Akitas at AKC's Akita Breed Biography. Tibetan Mastiff Coming face to face with this ancient behemoth, an intruder up to no good, will likely move on to easier pickings. Tibetan Mastiffs can stand 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh well over 100 pounds. It's impossible to discuss this breed without leaning on words like “powerful,” “muscular,” “massive,” and “substantial.” And yet, TMs are quite light-footed and will meet a perceived threat with surprising agility. The broad head, with its high-set, V-shaped ears, and expressive brown eyes, projects a noble, sagacious expression. Discover more about Tibetan Mastiffs at AKC's Tibetan Mastiff Breed Biography. Lhasa Apso The lavishly coated Lhasa Apso is a thousand-year-old breed that served as sentinels at palaces and monasteries isolated high in the Himalayas. Smart, confident, and complex, Lhasas are family comedians but regally aloof with strangers. Discover more about Lhasa Apsos at AKC's Lhasa Apso Breed Biography. Pekingese Pekingese are compact, stocky toy dogs weighing up to 14 pounds. The coat is longest at the neck and shoulders, giving Pekes their famous “lion's mane.” Coats come in various reds, from golden-red to darker shades. Afghan Hound Since ancient times, Afghan Hounds have been famous for their elegant beauty. But the thick, silky, flowing coat that is the breed's crowning glory isn't just for show; it served as protection from the harsh climate in mountainous regions where Afghans originally earned their keep. Beneath the Afghan's glamorous exterior is a powerful, agile hound, standing as high as 27 inches at the shoulder, built for a long day's hunt. Their huge paw-pads acted as shock absorbers on their homeland's punishing terrain. The Afghan Hound is a special breed for special people. A breed expert writes, “It's not the breed for all would-be dog owners, but where the dog and owner combination is right, no animal can equal the Afghan Hound as a pet.” Discover more about Afghan Hounds at AKC's Afghan Hound Breed Biography. Xoloitzcuintli The 3,000-year-old Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced “show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee”), the ancient Aztec dog of the gods, is today a loving companion and vigilant watchdog. The alert and loyal Xolo comes in three sizes, and either hairless or coated varieties. Discover more about Xoloitzcuintlis at AKC's Xoloitzcuintli Breed Biography. Basenji Basenjis are small, graceful hounds standing 16 or 17 inches at the shoulder. They are recognizable by their glistening short coat, tightly curled tail, and wrinkled forehead, and expressive almond-shaped eyes that convey a variety of subtle, humanlike emotions. Basenjis are a lovely sight at a standstill but more impressive yet at a fast trot when they exhibit the long, smooth strides of a mini-racehorse. And yes, it's true, they don't bark, but they make their feelings known with an odd sound described as something between a chortle and a yodel. Basenjis are fastidious and will groom themselves like cats. They have been called a “cult breed” as they are small in numbers, but those lucky enough to own one do so with singular devotion. Discover more about Basenjis at AKC's Basenji Breed Biography. Saluki Among the world's oldest breeds, the slim but rugged Saluki was the hunting hound of kings for thousands of years. Salukis are swift and agile sprinters who love a good chase. They make gentle, dignified, and independent but loyal pets. The beauty of Salukis has been a thing of wonder for thousands of years. They're slim and leggy, but very strong and perfectly balanced, like a great athlete or dancer. Males can stand between 23 and 28 inches at the shoulder; females can be much shorter. They come in many colors and patterns. Their large, oval-shaped eyes are warm and intelligent. Salukis are highly adaptable, able to live and work in any climate. They're magnificent animals, but owning them comes with many special challenges. Discover more about Salukis at AKC's Saluki Breed Biography. For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org. Shareables: Legend has it, the Afghan Hound was the only dog breed to procure a spot on Noah's Ark. Check Out the Video Episode! This week, the world is still reeling from the incredible happenings at the World Firework Championships. The bronze medal went to veteran Chip Mahoney with an amazing display of simultaneous grilling and fireworking, culminating in a finale where he cleaned up 12 beer cans by flying them via bottle rocket directly into a garbage can. Taking silver this year was newcomer Howard J. Hines with an extensive Harry Potter-themed Roman Candle Battle exhibition. But shocking the world in an unforeseen upset was the first place medal winner Tab Birt who produced a spectacle for the ages. A full orchestra, decked in sparklers performed Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture while he timed the song's usual cannon firing to the sound of exploding microwaves. If you weren't there in person, you can now purchase the 2021 World Firework Championship Highlights VHS for only $49.99!- Won't Someone Think About the Dogs?!- Freedom Isn't Free- Invincible Pacing- Women Using Kids to Stop FunFireworks have been around for over a thousand years. We've had domesticated dogs since long before that, but they've had plenty of time to adapt. The Fouth of July happens every year. It doesn't just sneak up on you like a silent tornado. If you have dogs that you haven't trained to not piss themselves at fireworks, you need to be ready for that weekend. It's called being responsible. Complaining about fireworks is a moot point. You either were prepared and are an asshole that wants to sap fun from everyone else due to your Pekingese, or you're a bad pet owner. Pick one.Freedom isn't free. But it could be. It could be if we stopped being Earth's Hall Monitor But Also The Kid Who Stirs Shit Up. How about we stop spending billions of dollars a year sending troops to countries that don't want us there because we sent billions in weapons there five years ago and a bunch of zealous assholes got their hands on them. It almost seems like we're that crazy firefighter that goes around setting fires so we can put them out because there's not enough fires and the city is going to shut us down.I understand that when you take a book and turn it into something else, you gotta change it. Having a movie where you constantly hear the main characters thoughts via narration would be real dumb. The book of a musical? Good luck getting anyone other than trained musicians to read it. But you have to be careful in moving things around or else you can lose fundamental aspects of why something works. Like making Blofeld James Bond's brother, or having Antonio Banderas play an Arabian ambassador, or making a beloved 300 page children's book into three separate three hour snoozefests.Having children is not a miracle. Billions upon billions have been doing it for the last couple million years. The creation of fire? The wheel? Those are worth celebrating. You fulfilling your biological imperative to bone is not. If you bring your child somewhere unsafe and refuse to leave, that's on you. A kid is crying at a loud concert? Leave. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Your kid is not special, you are not special, and acting like you deserve special treatment because you had one only makes me feel like a really late term abortion is in need. Not for the kid, for you.All this and more on this week's episode! Don't forget to join us on DISCORD, and support us on PATREON or by BUYING A SHIRT!

The 2021 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is happening this weekend, June 12-13, in Tarrytown, NY! On this week's episode of the Good Dog Pod, host Laura Reeves is joined by Allison Alexander, who has been an All-Breed Professional Handler for over 30 years. She is also the founder of the https://www.leadingedgedogshowacademy.com/ (Leading Edge Dog Show Academy). What has changed about Westminster this year? Westminster is usually held in February in New York City's Madison Square Garden. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, it is being held in Tarrytown on the historic Lyndhurst Estate. In addition, the number of dog shows that usually happen across the country were reduced from several thousands to a few hundred. The new show date and scarcity of dog shows means that Westminster this year will be extra exciting because of the potential for surprise contenders! What are some reasons that this year's show has the opportunity to be one of the best yet? The first reason that comes to mind for Allison and Laura is the Best in Show Judge, the renowned Patricia Craig Trotter. Trotter has been breeding, showing, and judging dogs for seven decades. Her presence in the show ring is highly anticipated, and is a sign that this will be an iconic year for Westminster. Another reason is that four new breeds have been introduced to Westminster - the Barbet, Biewer Terrier, Belgian Laekenois, and Dogo Argentino. Find out more information about them https://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/media-center-content/new-breeds-for-2021 (here). What breeds and dogs do Allison and Laura have their eyes on? Both believe that there are some exemplary dogs in the Samoyed, Irish Setter, English Springer Spaniel, and Lagotto Romagnolo breeds. They are also paying close attention to the Toy Group, namely the Pekingese and Havanese breeds. However, with so many changes this year, it's hard even for the two experts to predict which dogs have the best shot at Best in Show. What is the schedule for this weekend? On Saturday, June 12, we will see the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding Groups. On Sunday, June 13, we will see the Sporting, Working, Terrier Groups, and finally Best in Show. This weekend will be broadcasted on the FOX network. Check out the https://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/2021-dog-show-general-information/2021-fox-sports-television-schedule (Westminster website) for more information on the schedule and broadcasting. Despite all the changes to Westminster this year, Allison and Laura believe that the fact that the show is happening in June instead of the typical February poses a unique timeline for the world of dog shows, with Westminster now being an opportunity to say hello to new dogs instead of only bidding goodbye to retiring ones. *Allison mistakenly stated that the Pekingese is of Japanese origin; we recognize that the breed is actually of Chinese origin. Will you be attending Westminster 2021? Join us for a Breeder Appreciation Party on Friday, June 11th. The event will be outdoors, at Hudson Anchor Rooftop in Tarrytown, NY. There will be free food, drinks, live music and giveaways. And better yet: dogs are welcome! In this episode, we're speaking with Lee Dal Pra, a Chicago based Social Worker and Courtney Wells, a Chicago based Psychologist. Both Lee and Courtney are working in private practice and wrestling with how to Lean In to charging premium fees and building generational wealth, while simultaneously contending with the messages that in order for Queer people and BIPOC people to deserve wealth, they have to work ten times harder AND focus on giving back to the community, ultimately sacrificing their own well being. Why is it that we demand Queer people and BIPOC people do their own work to build wealth and make up for social injustice while also solving problems of mental health in society? Whooftah. We'll take it up in this episode. In this episode, we will cover: Why Lee and Courtney decide to transition into private practice from high positions in the hospitalized mental healthcare setting; How they have received pushback from peers on establishing private practice fees and coming off insurance panels; How they served to challenge and encourage one another to grow as clinicians and business owners; A candid conversation discussing the pressure on Queer and BIPOC therapits to self sacrifice in order to fix a broken system. Brachycephalic, Aggressive Breeds and TemperatureEveryone loves pugs, Pekingese, and French bull dogs, but those dogs are actually restricted breeds when it comes to flying. Snub-nosed dogs and cats are considered Brachycephalic which can lead to severe respiratory distress. Brachycephalic means snort headed. They are all cute dogs and cats and a lot of people don’t realize it can be an issue when you decide to relocate or take a job in another country. A lot of the airlines have list of restricted breeds that are allowed to fly. Common examples of snub-nosed dogs and cats are English Bulldogs, French Bull Dogs, Pugs, Pekingese, Boston Terriers and king Charles spaniels, Persian cats, Scottish Fold cats, Himalayan, Bermese and British shorthair just to name a few. Aggressive Breeds is something else that is restricted on airlines or what the airlines consider to be restricted. Some countries even prohibited certain breeds from entering. Germany no longer allows Pitbull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire-Bullterrier or Bullterrier. You can transit through the country, but not stay. You can usually call or google the airlines to see what the restrictions are for flying dogs, but most if not all have restricted breeds.Temperature is something else that has to be considered when shipping pets. Most airlines have guidelines as to how cold and how hot it can be to ship your babies. Airlines often require an Acclimation disclaimer or letter filled out by you and your vet with the max/min temperatures that are allowed. Also, it includes the entire trip if there are layovers. All the reasons above are why you need to contact World Pet Travel prior to making reservations to ship your babies to a new country. They can tell you upfront what, when, where and how it is done. Don’t wait until it is too late to get your baby on the flight. They were elected president of Girls Nation in 2009, on a universal healthcare platform, before leaving mock politics and organized gender. ABOUT THE HOST Neil Goldberg is an artist in NYC who makes work that The New York Times has described as “tender, moving and sad but also deeply funny.” His work is in the permanent collection of MoMA, he’s a Guggenheim Fellow, and teaches at the Yale School of Art. More information at neilgoldberg.com. ABOUT THE TITLE SHE’S A TALKER was the name of Neil’s first video project. “One night in the early 90s I was combing my roommate’s cat and found myself saying the words ‘She’s a talker.’ I wondered how many other gay men in NYC might be doing the exact same thing at that very moment. With that, I set out on a project in which I videotaped over 80 gay men in their living room all over NYC, combing their cats and saying ‘She’s a talker.’” A similar spirit of NYC-centric curiosity and absurdity animates the podcast. Producer: Devon Guinn Creative Consultants: Aaron Dalton, Molly Donahue Mixer: Andrew Litton Visuals and Sounds: Joshua Graver Theme Song: Jeff Hiller Website: Itai Almor & Jesse Kimotho Digital Strategy: Ziv Steinberg Thanks: Jennifer Callahan, Larry Krone, Tod Lippy, Sue Simon, Jonathan Taylor TRANSCRIPTION NEIL: I am so happy to have Ray Lipstein with me on a remote version of She's a Talker. Ray, thank you so much for being with me. RAY: It is my pleasure. More than my pleasure. NEIL: What is more than your pleasure? RAY: My pain, I guess. I don't know. NEIL: So you're saying it is painful to be here. RAY: Yeah. It fits somewhere between ennui and delight. It goes backwards. NEIL: There falls the shadow. So we're talking remotely, how are you doing? Whatever that means. We're talking, I think, probably two months into quarantine in New York. RAY: I am holding up well. I rearranged my bedroom last night in a feat of extreme 2:00 AM industriousness and it feels great. It's converted the bed psychologically into a day bed, the new orientation. So I'm excited for my roommate to get back who is with their partner. They're not a Gog. I'm going to send them away again. It's very big news. NEIL: Okay. When someone asks you what you do, how do you succinctly describe to them what it is? RAY: I work at The New Yorker. No further questions. NEIL: Okay. I'll accept that. RAY: No, no, no, don't accept it. Don't accept it. If someone asks me, what do I do, well, first of all, I would say, "Do you mean for a living? What do you mean? And why are you asking?" Those are all first line questions. And if push comes to shove, I say I'm a copy editor at The New Yorker. NEIL: All right. So first card is most photography is melodramatic. By definition, photography is melodramatic because it's the moment, right? It's always the moment. RAY: To preserve a moment is melodramatic. NEIL: Well, I don't know if to preserve it, to present it, to say, okay, here's this flux of life and I am going to take this one moment. Fuck preserving it. And I'm going to offer it. I'm offering you this one moment. Okay. That's the theoretical problem with it, but then I think pragmatically, photographs often look melodramatic just by virtue of something being stopped in the middle of something. So let's say you're looking at a picture from a photo album where your mother is looking into the camera and your father is looking off to the side and you're in the baby carriage holding a rattle. That is melodrama, because all that shit by virtue of being extracted from the flux of time is being given this outsized importance. RAY: It definitely seems like a bit arrogant or presumptuous. I mean, that seems like part of it, right? What you're saying that, to free. Yeah. And to present any moment, any given moment in time, it's something worthy of, as you say, isolating it out of that flux. I associate melodrama with overwrought emotionalism. NEIL: Which I think this has paradoxically by its restraint. RAY: Huh? Yeah. I mean, if you're going to say that, I mean, I have to say that all art is melodramatic then. I would say that card is melodramatic. NEIL: Oh, all the cards are melodramatic because it's by virtue of saying, look at this thought I had. It's worth your attention. It's sort of like at the beginning of the podcast, can I tell you this may be a slightly different thing, I've in the past introduced it by saying, "Hi, I'm Neil Goldberg, and this is She's A Talker. That to me seems like the height of presumption or melodrama or something, like who the fuck cares if you're Neil Goldberg and who cares if the podcast is called She's A Talker? RAY: Well, once you said that it's melodramatic in its restraint, I kind of start to feel like everything, including life, is melodramatic because then both the things that are literally melodramatic and the things that are restrained are melodramatic. And I absolutely feel that way. We're constantly looking to melodrama. NEIL: Everything. Everything is melodramatic basically. RAY: And you would only start it with most photography. How quickly were you realized? Yeah. I mean, I think for practical reasons I can offer a defense of you giving your name and the name of the podcast at the beginning, but I definitely see why it seems crazily hubristic and presumptuous and absurd, but it also feels crazily hubristic and presumptuous and absurd to look at myself in the mirror in the morning and try on multiple outfits and then go out the door thinking about how I look. I mean, it's presumptuous to have an identity. That's why you just got to strive for ego death. Everything short of ego death is melodrama. NEIL: Next card. Does the immune system ever get tired of all the conflict? RAY: This one made me giggle. I love to personify the immune system. NEIL: When you kind of personify it, does it have features? RAY: My immune system would be extremely neurotic. It would be anxious and avoidant and inefficient, over-reactive. Oh, all these sorts of things that you also might characterize me with. It would be true of him, my immune system. NEIL: Okay. Your immune system is gendered male. RAY: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, yeah. Uses he pronouns for now, I guess. NEIL: You say that your immune system is avoidant. What does it avoid? RAY: I mean, I think of my immune system's avoidant in terms of hay fever. When allergies come, it just absolutely drops. The ball runs the opposite direction. It doesn't even put up or maybe that's wrong. Maybe it's an over, I forget exactly what is it. NEIL: If you have allergies, that means you have an overactive immune system, I believe. RAY: Yeah. I think we're going to have to scratch all this for my pride, but I mean, it may not be avoidant in a literal sense, but it's avoidant emotionally and it knows that and I know it. Just because you're tackling, you could be avoiding a real conflict by throwing yourself at the conflict in an inefficient way. There's all sorts of ways you can avoid. NEIL: Oh my God, that's the story somehow of my art career, but not about conflict, but about opportunities. NEIL: Once one has decided that the Zoom meeting is over the rush to end the call. I'm talking about pressing the button that actually ends the call, so as not to be in that zone between when the meeting is over and the call has been disconnected. RAY: Yeah. I'm so glad you named this. I relate to it strongly. And I embarrassed myself at work Slack bemoaning it happening to me with my therapist. Every time we Zoom, she beats me out of there. So I'm working on it. Because it feels, and that doesn't just feel like embarrassment. That feels like abandonment. I mean, it's therapy. Every time. NEIL: You don't want to be abandoned. RAY: You don't want to be abandoned. NEIL: That's it right? It's about abandonment. RAY: You don't want to be the schmuck alone in the room. Yeah. It feels like rejection, I suppose. But the Zoom, you have to click it and then it'll say, "Are you sure you want to leave the meeting?" So there's that second. That's where I always get held up. Everyone leaves while I'm waiting to confirm that I want to leave, but on FaceTime, they don't ask you anything. And I was talking to a good friend of mine yesterday or two days ago, and I wanted to beat her out of that call so that I didn't feel abandoned. And I tried to compensate for the popup and there was no popup. And instead I hung up on her in mid sentence and that's kind of like, that's the price you pay to make sure you're not the last one left. NEIL: That really reminds me. I was deep into magic as a kid in high school. No. Well, yes, in high school, but all the way in elementary school. And I remember I once did a magic show for the elementary school. Maybe I was in junior high and I came back to the elementary school to do a magic show. And the teacher was introducing me, but I had the feeling like, wait, she's actually not going to introduce me. She was doing kind of a roundabout introduction that I think was maybe speaking to magic broadly, and I had this profound fear that she's just going to forget to introduce me. So I just came out in the middle of her introduction and started doing my show. Let's sit with that, right? RAY: There's a lot there. NEIL: I think I do, and I suspect you do too, if someone is, well, an introduction is often praising and of course I desperately want to be praised, but I don't want to be seen needing the praise, so I try to preempt it. So if someone is saying something nice about my art, which of course I want to hear, but I'll often cut them off. This connects to a card actually that I have here, which is when people praise me, it makes me wonder what narcissistic thing they detect in me that is pulling for them to praise me. Whenever someone's praising me, I think, oh wait, they can tell I'm asking for the praise or my whole personality is structured around needing praise. RAY: Mm-hmm (affirmative). What makes you think that they can tell? NEIL: Because I feel like one is always 100% transparent. That I deeply believe. People can always tell, don't you think? RAY: I don't know. I don't know. I was in a dialectical behavioral therapy group for a bit and they have these versions of Zen koans, but they're kind of very banal phrases instead. And there's one that's like, never in the history of the universe has anyone ever read another person's mind. But I took issue with that one because I mean, it really just eliminates the idea of magic from the schema. I don't want to believe it, but also it does give me some comfort because then no one, you know. I remind myself that constantly that no one can read my mind and it helps. It might help you receive compliments, because you do. We really want them. NEIL: Okay. There's the magic version of reading minds, but reading a mind is also just picking up on cues that manifest themselves. I feel like I'm a terrible liar. I just know if I'm lying to someone, unless they're just really tuned out, they can tell it. So that's not them reading my mind that they know what I'm saying is a lie. They can read it on my face. Likewise, if I'm feeling greedy for a compliment, I just think that manifests itself. RAY: Maybe you have very expressive body language. NEIL: This card says, how animals hide their pain, but what about a hypochondriacal animal? RAY: Do you have an animal that is hypochondriacal? NEIL: No, I had known lots of people and people are animals, but no, the closest I could come up with are those birds that as a strategy to protect their nests, they fly away from the nest and pretend they have a broken wing to attract the predator to them and then they fly away. Is that hypochondria or is that, well, it's a strategy and maybe hypochondria is a strategy. And it draws attention, which hypochondria does. RAY: That's interesting. NEIL: That's the closest I can get to a hypochondriacal animal. RAY: There is a dog in this 19 whatever vet book about an English veterinarian who lives in the countryside. NEIL: All Creatures Great and Small? RAY: All Creatures Great and Small. NEIL: Oh my God. That was, I think, the first book I ever read. RAY: No shit. Yeah. Really? NEIL: Oh, I was obsessed with it. James Harriot. James Harriot, right? RAY: Yeah. Totally. So right. James Harriot goes, he's this country doctor and he has to earn the respect of his eccentric boss and join the practice. He's seeing a Pekingese, I think, who is owned, I forget what the Pekingese's name is. I'm trying to find the, oh, I opened to it. Amazing. Ms. Pumphrey. Oh, yeah. Tricky, the Pekingese and Tricky needs, I don't know whether it's Tricky who is the hypochondriac or Mrs. Pumphrey, but he needs to squeeze Tricky's anal glands every so often. NEIL: Oh, I remember this vaguely. RAY: Tricky gets uncomfortable. Yeah. Iconic. I mean, definitely an iconic one. And then the story is really about how Mrs. Pumphrey anthropomorphizes Tricky and how James Harriot has to make sure to thank Tricky and not Mrs. Pumphrey for the cigars and the sherry or whatever he gets at Christmas because the gift is from the dog, but the dog, he doesn't really even seem to need the anal glands being squeezed. So actually I think it's still the owner who's hypochondriacal unfortunately at the end of this whole story. NEIL: You're right. It's like Munchhausen Syndrome by Proxy. God, lots of memories from that book. And I worked summers in high school at veterinarian's offices, because I wanted to be a veterinarian for a long time. An animal lover. RAY: Was it because of the books? NEIL: I think the books were because of that. I was just obsessed with animals from an early age, but one thing that will turn you off to being a veterinarian is working for veterinarians. I think for me, it was just seeing a lot of animals suffering. I just couldn't deal with it. But I saw a lot of anal glands being expressed. Did you say express? RAY: I didn't. NEIL: Because that's what it's called. You express the anal glands. RAY: I love that more than anything I've heard all day. That is. Tell me if this is true, because if so, it's tragic. Must anal glands always be expressed by another or can they express themselves? NEIL: I don't have the answer to that question. I got to believe that they can be expressed themselves, unless that was some real clever form of domestication that happened. It's like maybe that's why dogs domesticated themselves, to get their anal glands expressed. RAY: They lost the ability to express. Yeah. Well, let's just hope they don't take up photography. NEIL: People who go through a stage where they don't smile for photos should just skip that phase. I went through that phase, I should say. RAY: Let them just skip it. Let them skip it. They don't need it. NEIL: And there are some people who are stuck in that phase. But you're right. You don't need it, but is there any photograph that's better by virtue of the fact that the person's not smiling? RAY: Loads, millions, all of the ones. I think so. It introduces this kind of amazing mystery to all the photos before the convention of smiling in photographs. There's a photograph in my parents' basement of a great aunt of ours. And there're just all these incredibly pale looking Latvian girls in dark robes and they all look, they're so serious, but you know that they're school girls and someone's got gum in someone's hair and eight of them have crushes on each other. What's happening? And you can't tell. There's this sort of unaccountable distance that the imagination has to bridge between what these faces might look like if their personalities could have come through if they'd had more choice, I suppose, in how to form their expressions. RAY: I guess what I advocate for is choice ultimately. There shouldn't be a mandate to smile. If you think you have a crappy smile and it makes your face look funny, as I kind of feel about my face, then you shouldn't have to smile. You choose the expression most appropriate in the moment. NEIL: I like that. RAY: And that's the only way to really keep it from being a melodramatic photograph, I think. NEIL: I think smiling in a photograph is a way to acknowledge the melodrama. How's that? I think not smiling supports the melodrama. RAY: Yeah. Smiling fights it. I agree, because then it's a farce if you're smiling. NEIL: You're acknowledging. You're acknowledging it. RAY: Yeah. I'll just say if you take away the coy avoidant pout from me for a photograph, you'd be depriving me of one of my few remaining crutches, so I hope you come around. NEIL: I do know that pout. I know that pout. I like it. I love it. I also love your smile though, because I feel like your smile is a hard one smile. RAY: Interesting. It's about a great battle. That does recall, yeah, I was going to say something earlier when you were talking on the card, the card on people praising you because it makes you wonder what narcissistic thing you did they detect. I mean, please don't include this. But there was in high school, they called this face I made the a hundred face, which was when I got back an a hundred on a quiz or a test and it would be this evil, a rapid flicker between a smile and a frown and a frown that was exaggeratedly. It's a horrific, horrific bastardization of what a facial expression should be. Just a constantly moving war to prevent a smirk, a smirk for getting at a hundred on a quiz or a test, or just to hide the joy or to hide whatever the self satisfaction. And whenever it came, I was so conscious of what my face looked like to others, that they gave it a name. NEIL: The hundred face, but can we just completely put a button on this by saying, you say there's no such thing as mind reading, you were trying to kind of jam the signal of people's ability to read your mind as expressed by your facial expression. This speaks to the truth that people can read your mind, or at least you fear people read your mind. I have to include this. You prefaced by saying not include it. I just feel like I would violate, even though this isn't journalism, I would violate journalistic ethics to include that. RAY: Oh my God. Only if your credibility as a journalist is on the line. If those are the stakes, then I will see. NEIL: Oh my God. RAY: And maybe my friend, Lizzie, will hear her famous phrase. NEIL: Oh, I love Lizzie for naming that. You know what the hundred phase reminds me of by the way, although I think it's actually totally different, but it's this thing I do where I'm saying something and I'm about to use a fancy word. And by the way, I'm using that word not to show off, I think, but because it feels like the right word, but I don't want to be seen as trying to show off. So there's this little stumble or pause or something I do before I say the word that actually I think it then draws attention to the word or to me. I don't know. Do you have that situation? RAY: Yeah, I have that situation really bad. I don't know if I do the pause, but no matter what, the way I handle the self consciousness makes it more conspicuous. I think I just make a really shameful hand in the cookie jar kind of face and dark glances to see if anyone's noticed that I've used an unacceptable word. And I mean, I was made fun of this my whole life for using big words, I guess, was the common accusation. And like, "Why do you have to talk like that?" All sorts. And they're absolutely right. There was no reason to talk like that. I mean, it's just I was getting vocab words in my lunchbox every day from my mom from a book and there's only so much you can do with that much input and had to use it, use it or lose it. NEIL: Because your mom is a librarian, right? RAY: My mom, she works at the library. She is a library circulation. She's a clerk. NEIL: And she would slip a word into your lunchbox every day? RAY: She would casually slip a word of the day every day of the week. And then on Fridays, a vocab quiz, or maybe it was the end of the month after and I do 30 of them, I'd get quiz. NEIL: Wow. Now, would she ever slip in a vocabulary word, but forget your actual lunch? RAY: I think probably the words were what kept her remembering to make lunch. NEIL: Maybe your mom should be on She's A Talker since it's so centered around these index cards. RAY: Yeah. Well, in fairness, they were cards printed with the names of Lindt chocolates in different combinations, like milk chocolate shell with a hazelnut filling and a coconut shavings on top and numbered and then the backside was blank, and they were being reused from when my dad was a market researcher and Lindt Chocolate was his client at one point. And for our whole lives, our note cards were these focus group discarded Lindt Chocolate cards. NEIL: That's so beautiful. I hope you're saving that for whatever, for your novel, for your one person show. RAY: I think I was saving it for this. And this is where this memory will finally be discharged. NEIL: I love it a discharged memory, especially remotely. A remote discharged memory. RAY: I knew you wouldn't let me get away with saying discharge. NEIL: When this is all over, by this I mean our current who the fuck knows what over means, but what is it you're looking forward to? RAY: What am I looking forward to? One thing I miss is getting on the subway and moving through all the cars of the train in case my one true love is somewhere on the train, but not in the car that I got into and going from car to car to see if someone is there who I will meet, and none of that is possible now. NEIL: I love it. I'm sending you a huge virtual hug out to Bed Stuy from the Lower East Side. Thank you so much for being on She's A Talker. RAY: Neil, thank you so much for having me. It's been a total delight. NEIL: She's A Talker with Neil Goldberg. She's a talker with fabulous guests. She's a talker, it's better than it sounds. Yeah.

Tibetan Spaniels: From Monastery Walls to the Back of the Sofa Ch. Avalon Riker of Ebonstern, circa 2002. Host Laura Reeves caught up with three longtime breeders of Tibetan Spaniels, Kay Dickeson, Mallory Driskill and Carol Tyte, at the 2019 National Specialty in Albany, Ore. Tibbies, as their owners call them, are a small, low-maintenance, long-lived, affectionate but independent breed. The breed’s history takes shape from the mists of time. These were the alert watch dog that ran the along the thick walls of the monasteries in Tibet, alerting their much larger brethren, https://puredogtalk.com/tibetan-mastiff-history-lore-and-modern-living-pure-dog-talk/ (Tibetan Mastiffs), to any approaching danger. Weighing in at 9 to 15 pounds, Tibbies require no trimming for the show ring, are easy to maintain with simple brushing and frequently live to 16 years of age. The ancient breed is a big dog in a little dog body, Tyte noted. Their instincts still guide them to “be up high and watch things” Dickeson said. “They will get on the back of the sofa to look out the window,” Driskill noted, adding that “off the furniture” isn’t really a concept Tibbies honor. Tibetan Spaniels may be any color or mixture of colors. The first Tibetan Spaniels were imported to the U.S. from England in early 1970s. The breed was introduced to England in the early 1900s, Driskill said. Marlin Perkins, host of the Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom television show, imported Tibetan spaniels. Tyte, who owns descendants of these dogs, noted that in the second and third generation pedigrees of those imports, the dogs names were listed as “unknown.” Believed to predate Pekingese and Lhasa Apso, our panelists recommend Tibbies as a welcoming and engaging breed for owner handlers. Moderation in all things is the goal for the Tibetan Spaniel in the show ring. Driskill noted the breed is not extreme in any area – coat, head or bone. The characteristic hare foot is important for the “wash and wear” dogs. David Fitzpatrick on Pekingese, the Palace Dogs of Peking http://www.pequest.com/ (David Fitzpatrick), 2012 Westminster Kennel Club BIS winner with the Pekingese, Malachy, was obsessed with dogs as a child. Although his parents wouldn’t let him own a dog, he found ways to be involved with them by walking and housesitting dogs in the neighborhood. David Fitzpatrick receiving the Westminster Kennel Club BIS ribbon from judge Cindy Vogels. His passion took off around 1970 when he wrote a letter to a local handler to see if she needed help. Before he knew it, he was being picked up after school, earning $5/day helping her with Pekingese and other toy breeds. “It could have been pretty much any breed,” Fitzpatrick said. “I fell into the lap of the Pekingese and loved them from the start. It was fate really.” “Speak to anyone who is remotely involved with the Pekingese breed and the mention of David Fitzpatrick’s name will result in a degree of awe and reverence, for this American gentleman is acknowledged as being as fine a handler and presenter of a Pekingese as has ever been seen,” says noted British author Andrew Brace. What is it about Pekingese? The dogs of royalty in China, the first Pekingese specialty show was held in the US around 1908, Fitzpatrick said. “The breed attracted the pillars of society. They were the status symbol dog of the day and were the most popular toy breed into the ‘60s.” “It is a detail oriented breed,” Fitzpatrick noted, “with their pear shaped body, rectangular head, features spread out and not crowded, heavy bone, crooked legs, level back and high tail set.” Pekingese should have an intelligent expression, one that is almost arrogant and disdainful. “Their true temperament is snooty,” Fitzpatrick said. “They were developed as palace dogs in China. They were royalty and had their own servants. They are generally waiting for you to do for them. It’s not a breed that really wants to please their humans.” Pekes as pets Fitzpatrick said the breed is great to live with. “They blend into the household,” he noted. “They get their loves and then go entertain themselves. They’re not constantly clawing at you like some dogs. They’re more independent.” Pekingese have a great deal of personality, Fitzpatrick added. While they are at a show they are performing, showing their regal and aristocratic nature. At home, they’re like any other dogs, they chase squirrels and his dogs even dug out a nest of baby bunnies. Breed specific presentation “It’s up to us to show our dogs in a proper manner, not succumb to this crazy show biz of dogs chasing bait around the ring… an aristocratic breed really should not be begging for food, should they?” Support this podcast

Laurie discusses the testing process used by many shelters and rescue groups to determine compatibility between cats and dogs, and offers suggestions on how to get them used to each other once you bring them home. Callers had questions about a Pekingese x Corgi with a barking problem, a cat who bites too hard when playing, and a Boston Terrier who peed on their bed pillow. Laurie also shares her opinion about the value of training and finding solutions to problems rather than just doing "testing" for behavior problems.

Scientists with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences say national standards on pesticides are badly needed as the country faces mounting pressure of protecting the ecological environment in rural areas. The standards should cover the levels of the maximum amount of residue allowed on a piece of farmland, and user instructions. The scientists say improper usage of pesticides is a matter of grave concern. Chemicals in pesticides leach into the environment, wasting resources, and posing a serious risk to the whole eco system. Overuse of pesticides also threatens aquatic life, animals and the long-term growth of crops. To prevent the damage and enable rational use of pesticides by farmers, scientists have developed a device that can verify how much of the chemicals need to be used on the farmland. A test kit containing color-coded test cards can help users determine the quality of their sprays and calculate droplet density. It will be completed within six years, with a total investment of 5 billion yuan, roughly 700 million U.S. dollars. The facility has been nicknamed Beijing Light Source. It will meet national security demands and create aerospace materials among other products. It will provide high-resolution methods of finding out more about substantial structures. The facility will be a new generation light source developed based on previous ones. The Light Source will create the brightest X-rays in the world. It will be 70 times brighter than the United States&`& National Synchrotron Light Source II. It will also be 10 times brighter than Sweden&`&s MAX IV, the strongest of its kind in the world so far.Bright X-rays could help measure the atomic structure of various substances, and the higher brightness will help researchers to see more detail in those substances.Around the world, there are more than 50 such facilities providing support in many research fields. More than 370,000 trips were organized by travel agencies, a 3 percent increase. The tourism administration has reported growth from individual and high-end travelers. In addition to first-tier and coastal cities, inland cities including those in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, became important source markets for China&`&s out-bound tourism industry.Meanwhile, Chinese tourists&`& travel itineraries and preferred destinations are different than they were before. For example, the phrase "Shopping spree" is a catchword among Chinese tourists visiting Japan in 2015. Since 2012, when a Tibetan mastiff pup sold for 20 million yuan, roughly 3 million U.S. dollars, in Shandong province, the country has become obsessed with another breed, the brown toy poodle. A pet dog center in Beijing says the brown toy poodle has become popular in recent years because people think they are cute, small and smart. The center says small dogs make ideal pets for many people with small apartments, adding that poodles are one of the smartest breeds. The toy like breed has been nicknamed "the teddy" in China. According to Beijing Kennel Club, Beijing had around 950,000 registered dogs in 2015. More than 13 percent of them were toy poodles. This outnumbers other breeds including the bichon frise, the golden retriever and the Welsh corgi. Since keeping a pet was legalized in 1993, the pet market has grown quickly. Many breeds have had their moment, including the Pekingese, the Tibetan mastiff and the Labrador. There are many reasons behind the popularity of the breed, including fashion trends and scarcity.Experts say the cycle of favor for one breed is around seven years, and now the price of brown toy poodles is dropping, meaning fewer people are buying them. Here is the news.A senior health official has called on governments at all levels to help relieve the burden on families wanting to have a second child.A senior official from the National Health and Family Planning Commission has said that an array of departments need to introduce measures to help resolve issues that have arisen with the introduction of the second-child policy in January last year.Health authorities have been rolling out policies nationwide since family planning rules were relaxed, including improvements to maternal care facilities. However, the official warned that families will need help from other government departments to handle some of the problems, including increased expenses, maternity leave and a shortage of nurseries.Almost 19 million babies were born in China last year, up 11 percent from 2015, with 45 percent born to women who already had a child.Over the same period, the maternal mortality rate fell from 201 per 1 million births to 199, despite the fact that half of the 90 million women who became eligible to have a second child are over 40 years old, putting them at a higher risk of complications during pregnancy. This is Special English.Beijing has banned high-emission vehicles from its urban areas.Starting from Feb. 15, light-duty gasoline-powered cars that fail to meet the "National Emission Standard 3" were banned from entering Beijing&`&s fifth ring road on weekdays.Violators will be fined 100 yuan, roughly 15 U.S. dollars, for every four hours that they drive on the road. Substandard vehicles will also be taken off the road through annual inspections or spot checks.Beijing currently requires new cars to comply with the "Beijing 6" emission standard, which is higher than the widely-used "National Emission Standard 5" and equivalent to the "Euro 6" standard, the strictest in China. The "National Emission Standard 1" was introduced in 1999 and the "National Emission Standard 2" followed in 2004.Higher-polluting gasoline vehicles account for less than 10 percent of vehicles on the road, but discharge over 30 percent of nitrogen oxide and 25 percent of volatile organic compounds.Beijing&`&s 6 million vehicles produce 500,000 tonnes of various pollutants annually and account for 30 percent of locally-generated PM 2.5, a particulate matter associated with hazardous smog, making this the prime source for PM2.5.Plagued by smog over the past decade, Beijing has initiated a series of regulations to improve its air quality. You&`&re listening to Special English. Xiaohua: Hello and welcome to RoundTable’s Word of the Week. This week we’re talking about dogs, again one of Mark’s favorite topics. Mark: I do like dogs. You know when I was a boy, we had a couple of dogs at home, and just ones that we got from an animal rescue center. And then when I became an adult and left home, I had a cat. And now I’m in Beijing, I’ve got a dog. And you know, I think I’m a dog person. I prefer dogs to cats I think. Xiaohua: And we’re going to talk about some breeds of dogs. One of the most popular ones in China is the golden retriever. Mark: That’s right, yes. I see a couple of these every evening when I’m walking my own dog. And these are said to be quite intelligent dogs. If we look at the word retriever, this gives us an indication of what that dog was bred to do. It was supposed to run out and bring back things like pheasants and other birds that had been shot by people going game hunting. So that’s why it was called a retriever, because it retrieves or brings things back. Xiaohua: Golden retriever, 金毛,是作为用来猎捕野禽的寻回犬而培养出来的,它们非常聪明,而且友善热情。But interestingly, because of their being over-friendly, they’re not very suitable to become a guard dog.Mark: Yeah, you don’t want that, do you? You don’t want a burglar breaking in, and befriending the dog, and then stealing your stuff. You want something a bit more aggressive. Xiaohua: Yeah, that’s right. Let’s talk about another kind of dog, the husky. Mark: Do you know the word husky actually originates from a word referring to Arctic people in general, the Inuits or Eskimos, known as Huskies. The word’s actually a contraction of the word Huskimos.Xiaohua: 哈士奇犬也是有很多人养的犬种。它的全称实际上是西伯利亚雪橇犬, it’s the Siberian husky, that’s the full name. Mark: That’s right. These dogs are very tough. I went to Alaska once, and when I was in Alaska, I saw the start of a husky dog race. It’s called the iditarod. And it goes for hundreds of miles across the snowy wilderness of Alaska. And you can see from the fur on them, I mean they’re quite sort of hairy dogs really, and they need that to keep warm. Xiaohua: Husky跑得非常快。哈士奇是狼的近亲,性格也比较多变,有的是非常胆小,但有的却比较暴力。另外在中国哈士奇由于它的表情非常可爱也被称作表情帝。Mark: Isn’t that the dog in Game of Thrones? You’re not a fan, are you? I’m perhaps the person to answer my own question. (Xiaohua: Yes, please.) Cause I’m a big fan of Game of Thrones. I think it is actually. I think these are the Dire Wolves, and I think that it’s a type of husky that they use for that character in the Game of Thrones. This has actually led to a surge in the popularity of husky breeds. People want to have their own Game of Thrones dog. But of course, you gotta remember, you know, a dog needs love and affection for all 15 or 16 years of its life, not just until the end of the next season of the TV show. Xiaohua: Yeah, you have to be a responsible dog owner. And we’ve talked about some big dogs. Let’s now talk about a very, very small dog, a Chihuahua. Mark: The Chihuahua! These are funny little dogs, aren’t they? These are the dogs that women of a certain age perhaps and a certain social status, like to have in their handbags. Xiaohua: That’s right. I’m always afraid of stepping into one whenever I come across them. Mark: They look so fragile, don’t they, these little dogs? But the temperaments actually differ according to the temperament of the human owner. That’s what people say that own Chihuahuas. And they can be quite easily provoked to attack, which is very brave of them, considering how tiny they are, isn’t it really. They’re not said to be suitable for homes where there’re small children. But they are said to be very loyal, and may actually become overprotective of their owner. Xiaohua: 吉娃娃是属于小型犬种里的最小型,它有坚韧的意志,优雅、警惕和粘人的特性,另外它也不喜欢外来狗。There’s another kind of dog that you see a lot in Chinese homes, that is called the teddy bear. Mark: So I know the ones you mean. They’re sort of light brown, quite fluffy. They do look like a teddy bear come to life, really, don’t they? It’s supposed to be a type of poodle. These are said to be quite intelligent. The hair doesn’t fall out very often. They’re not known as shedding dogs, which is very good for people who might be allergic to dogs, or who don’t want to have their rugs to be full of dog hair. Xiaohua: 泰迪犬其实是贵宾犬的美容造型之一,但是因为泰迪犬不经常掉毛,所以也是受到很多人的喜爱。And there’s another kind of dog that actually originates from China. But today you don’t see it a lot on the streets of Beijing, and that’s the Pekingese. Mark: Oh the Pekingese dog! How could we forget that? Yes, that’s right. You know, some people used to call them lion dogs, because they said they look a bit like the Chinese guardian lions. And that breed is over 2,000 years old, and has hardly changed in all that time. Xiaohua: Pekingese叫京巴,也有叫狮子狗的。这其实是一种非常古老的犬种了。And it’s supposed to be favored by the imperial families. Mark: I heard they also make very good watch dogs as well. You know Xiaohua, I’d love to stay and chat more about dogs, but you know what, I’ve got to go now. I’ve got to go and walk the dogXiaohua: And that wraps up this edition of RoundTable’s Word of the Week.
Nataliya interrogates Jakey’s roommate while a remarkable Pekingese joins the investigation.
Relevance and credibility are the matches and gunpowder of advertising. Relevance is a glowing promise that can ignite the flame of desire.Credibility is quiet power: Details. Facts. Proof. The flame of relevance without the gunpowder of credibility is empty, glittering hype; fluffy and without substance. We see a hollow promise, the brief light of a match in the darkness and then the darkness returns. The gunpowder of credibility without a flame of relevance is the answer to a question no one was asking. Credibility sans relevance is cold, heavy and dry. We are bored by it. But add the glowing flame of relevance to the dry gunpowder of credibility and BOOM. You get everyone's attention. BOOM. Folks come running from every direction. BOOM. The world is on fire. Lights. Sirens. News cameras. Helicopters. BOOM. Every banker wants to be your friend. Want to hear something really strange? Writers who understand relevance are generally allergic to credibility. They speak ever to emotion, never willing to satisfy our hunger for details and proof. They say, “We have great prices!” and we say, “Name one.” They say, “The lowest prices! Guaranteed!” and we say, “What are the terms of this guarantee, exactly? What happens if I find a lower price? Do I get the advertised item for free or do you make excuses, apologize, and expect me to walk away satisfied? Guarantee, my ass.” Writers who understand credibility seem allergic to emotional relevance. They hate hyperbole and never want to be accused of it. “We have been in business since 1953. We are part of the community. We believe in honesty and in making a fair profit. When other stores say ‘half price,' you should always ask, ‘half of what?' We don't play those mark-it-up to mark-it-down pricing games like the other stores. We are experts. You can trust us. Our staff has 170 years of combined experience. And yes, we're every bit as boring as we sound.” Step one: light the match of relevance. Step two: touch it to credibility. And make sure it's a powder keg and not just a firecracker. The pop-pop-pop of firecracker credibility is like the yap-yap-yap of grandma's annoying little Pekingese dog. The person who combines relevance with credibility can change the world. Relevance with credibility is the answer to public education. Our current educational system offers credible information that has little relevance to the lives of today's students. Relevance with credibility is the answer for the church. Credibility is truth. Relevance is emotion. Truth without emotion is the ruling of a judge. No one is attracted to a courtroom. Emotion without truth is a cult. Church attendance is dwindling in America because ministers, like ad writers, usually lean too far to one side and away from the other. Without relevance and credibility, there can be no BOOM. Ad writers, sales people, teachers, trainers and ministers, ask yourselves continually, “Does what I'm about to say have relevance? Will it speak to the hearts of my audience? Will they be moved?” And then ask, “Is my message credible? Are my promises supported by evidence without loopholes? Will the audience have confidence in what I'm saying? Relevance plus credibility: BOOM. Roy H. Williams
