Some guys have the “storybook” path to the NFL: highly recruited out of college, invited to the NFL Combine and drafted. Not Todd Davis, he had to prove himself over and over again. Not only did he make it to the NFL, he stayed for several years and was a Captain for the Broncos Super Bowl 50 team. Todd played high school football at a small school in California. His dad sent out tapes to everyone and anyone. Todd had his sights set on Stanford, until they told his dad they didn't recruit in his area. That gave Todd all the motivation he needed. He took one of the few offers he did get and went to Sacramento State. He left as the school's 2nd best tackler in program history (351 tackles). The NFL draft came and went. The New Orleans Saints called because they needed “a body” for offseason training. Todd showed he was more than just a body and got noticed by Joe Vitt who promised he'd have a spot for Todd when training camp came around. Coach Vitt stood by his word. The Broncos snagged him off waivers from the Saints in mid-October of his rookie season and Todd played several years in Denver, until he was released after a second calf injury. These days, Todd is in real estate development, co-hosts the DNVR Denver Broncos Podcast and is raising three kids with his wife Zina.

He's the perfect example of how school and sports can coexist and be successful. David Bruton Jr. graduated with a double major in Political Science and Sociology from Notre Dame. He was also a starting safety for the Fighting Irish his junior and senior years and got noticed by NFL scouts. In 2009, he was chosen in the 4th round by the Denver Broncos where he would play for seven years. He became known as an exceptional special teams player and served as special teams captain from 2013-2015. His skills at safety weren't too shabby either: during his time in Denver, he finished nearly every season with double digits tackles, had five forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and three interceptions. David was having his best season in 2015, with arguably one of the best Broncos defenses in history, when he broke his fibula during a game in November. He kept playing, thinking it was just a contusion. The next day he was placed on injured reserve. By February of 2016, his fibula was healed, however, since he had been placed on IR, he wasn't able to play in the Broncos Super Bowl 50 Championship. The next season he signed with Washington, found himself on injured reserve again after his 6th career concussion and retired the following summer. After retiring, David went back to school and earned a doctorate from CU in Physical Therapy. He now runs his own clinic, Between the Lines Physical Therapy and still is very involved in his non-profit Bruton's Books.

Teammates Hall of Fame running back Terrell Davis, and three-time Super Bowl Champion Mark Schlereth join Brian Billick and Michael Robinson to share the real story of where Mark's nickname 'Stink' came from (1:20), and TD recounts how he got punished for crashing Shannon Sharpe's 'Club Shay Shay' during his first training camp (6:05). Mark then reveals that TD was not only a Hall of Fame player, but a Hall of Fame napper (7:25), and Davis gets put on the spot about how generous of a gift giver he was to the offense (10:40). Terrell and Mark then reflect on when they knew reaching 2,000 rushing yards in a season was attainable (14:45), and thankfully Schlereth says the refs missed him holding on Davis' milestone run (17:45). Meanwhile, a big part of their offense's success was the evolution of the zone running scheme that the Broncos perfected (18:20), and the guys talk about mentality required to run it down a team's throat (24:30). Mark and TD then talk about the loss that spurred back to back Super Bowl Championships (26:40) and overcoming the pressure to repeat. However, Mark details how their second Super Bowl run might have hit a little bit of bad karma due to an outspoken teammate (33:25). Coach Billick then asks TD about playing a decoy in the Super Bowl while he was dealing with a migraine and couldn't see (34:45). Finally, the guys give some insight into what Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway was like as a teammate (36:45). NFL Total Access: The Locker Room is part of the NFL Podcasts Network. The Orioles lost and it was weird and it was a bummer. But it was nowhere near as stupid as what we saw from the Rangers against the Padres last night. Holy hell does baseball ever prove how childish and embarrassing the sport is capable of being at times. At the bottom of Hour 1, ESPN & Blue Jays play by play voice Dan Shulman joined us to discuss the Fernando Tatis "controversy," the weird nature of the Blue Jays' season, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s struggles and more. Early in Hour 2, our old friend Mark Mussina joined the show to discuss the Tatis thing but far more importantly to debate whether "Africa" or "Rosanna" was the greater Toto song. We do the important stuff on this show. And at the bottom of Hour 2, FOX Sports analyst/former Broncos Super Bowl champ Mark Schlereth joined us to discuss why the Ravens have the best defense in the AFC and his thoughts on Dez Bryant (and the Antonio Brown conversation not going away).

The Seahawks defeat their NFC West rival to win the NFC Championship 23-17 and move on to Super Bowl XLVIII. Adam returns to civilization to record remotely after a week in the Oregon wilderness and he and Brandan share their different experiences watching the game. Coming out of his cave late this week, Adam realizes Richard Sherman was talked about in the news all week, not for his tipped pass, but for his post-game interview. The guys take a look at some of the biggest plays of the game, the players who made them happen and the moments they helped to create. Fourth down was big for both teams, but there wasn't a bigger play than Russell Wilsons throw on fourth down to Jermaine Kearse. That touchdown electrified the crowd and fired up the defense in creating three 49ers turnovers late in the game. There will be more to come in the Seahawks Super Bowl preview against the Broncos. Gerrad's name has been dropped several times on the show and with Denver in the game next Sunday, next week is a perfect time to have him come on and let Seahawks fans know what we might expect and some of the names on the team you may not be familiar with. With a brief window of opportunity to record, Better at Life is awarded off air to the two Stanford players who rose to the occasion to defeat their former college coach: Richard Sherman and Doug Baldwin. GO HAWKS!!
