Today, I'm sharing a conversation I had with one of today's most eclectic roots musicians, Buffalo Nichols. Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Carl, who goes by the name Buffalo Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? A student of African traditions and its roots in the blues, as well as the black influence on “white” music in country, bluegrass, old time and folk, the depth and airy nature of his voice lends itself to all these traditions, as represented in his music. We talked about his trajectory as a musician early on, being picked up by labels, and now being independent, the misinformed music history narrative that's been pushed on all of us since the 1920's, and many things in between. April 2025 Dante's Old SouthBuffalo Nichols: Texas based, Milwaukee raised, Buffalo Nichols is known as an acoustic blues guitarist and singer but that isn't the whole story. Two albums into his career, Nichols has proven himself to be an innovative songwriter with lyrics address both personal and political themes with biting insight. His influences range from his time playing in Baptist churches to his many years playing guitar in West African music bands. His experimental and hip-hop influences are displayed as well on his 2023 album, The Fatalist'. Nichols' self-titled debut, released in October 2021, ascended him to the national stage, earning praise and support from NPR Music (‘Tiny Desk (Home) Concert;' All Songs Considered ‘Best of October') to Rolling Stone ('The Fight to Reclaim the Blues' feature; ‘Song You Need To Know'), Bandcamp Daily (‘October Shortlist') to Guitar World, Texas Monthly to Uncut (UK), among many others. www.buffalo-nichols.com/www.instagram.com/buffalonicholsmusic/Odessa Blaine: General oddment and possible cryptid, Odessa haunts the mountains and coffee shops of North Georgia. Buffalo Nichols believes in the power of acoustic country blues. He also believes it's not a fossil, trapped in amber, but a living, breathing musical genre. Which is why he blends elements of the tradition—slide guitar, resonator, open tunings, themes of loss, redemption, and struggle—with loops, samples, drum machines, myriad effects, and modern-day narratives. His new album, The Fatalist, is the culmination of his art to date. Listening to its echoes of Skip James, John Hurt, Pink Floyd, and Dr. Dre is an even stranger experience when you know Nichols started his career in the thundering, downstroke-chiseled trenches of the Midwest metal scene. When you watch this Rig Rundown, Nichols will explain, and play, it all—it's a fascinating story. And the gear! Get ready for a feast, full of the trad and the rad.Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rrand D'Addario XS Strings: https://ddar.io/xs-rr

"The times when I'm writing the most are when I'm reading a lot," Carl "Buffalo" Nichols says on today's podcast. And wow is this true: you cannot be a writer of any stripe unless you read. Nichols likes to read voices that he cannot relate to. He mentions writers like Flannery O' Connor and H.L. Mencken, as well as books like A Clockwork Orange and A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He didn't even like them all, but he still felt that hearing those voices makes him a better writer. So on this episode we talk about how reading makes him a better songwriter, why being tired and cranky makes him a good editor, and why he likes to stop writing when he knows he still has something left in the tank.Nichols' latest album The Fatalist is out now on Fat Possum Records.
Milwaukee-based blues singer and guitarist Buffalo Nichols, on his self-titled 2021 debut, showed how timeless the blues can be, both musically and emotionally. On his latest album, called The Fatalist, Nichols uses contemporary 21st century sounds and techniques to remind us that the blues have been and are always with us, intimately tied to present-day 2023. Buffalo Nichols plays some of these new songs, in-studio. Set list; “Turn Another Stone”, “The Long Journey Home”, “The Difference”
Milwaukee singer-songwriter Buffalo Nichols returns to Basic Folk today to talk about his new album, ‘The Fatalist,' out September 15 from Fat Possum Records. We picked up where Nichols' debut album left off, traveling the world hot on the heels of the blues. Following a profound tradition can be just as frustrating as it is romantic. In his years on the road promoting his self-titled debut album, Carl aka Buffalo has witnessed how the blues can be a home base for listeners' nostalgic, back-in-the-good-old days, artistically stagnant, patriarchal tendencies. He wants none of it. ‘The Fatalist' is an offering to the gods of change, of self-awareness, of integrity. One of the major achievements of this collection of eight songs is the seemingly effortless sonic collage that comes second nature to hip hop but is less discussed in roots and americana. From a Charley Patton sample to “Ali Farka” Touré-influenced fingerpicking to tasty 808s to contemporary songwriting that wrestles with what it means to be a good man in 2023, ‘The Fatalist' tells a story about the present, while keeping the past close and eschewing sentimentality. This sense of being in conversation with storytellers of the past is a pillar of what I would call the Black Art Tradition, and it is part of what makes Buffalo Nichols one of the most exciting artists in blues music right now.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Donate to #FreeBlackMamas: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/freeblackmamasDonate to Abortion Care Tennessee: https://www.abortioncaretn.org/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

One of Peter Kreten's favorite albums of 2021 was the self-titled debut album from Buffalo Nichols. On this critically acclaimed album, Nichols captured the sound of the delta blues, and brought it into the 21st century. Nichols recently sat down with Kreten to discuss his debut album, how music allows all of us to express negative feelings, and who his musical hero is.

This week on the show, we talk to a startling new talent placing a gut-punch into the folk and blues scene, the Milwaukee-raised and now Austin-based singer-songwriter Buffalo Nichols. Growing up learning on his sister's dreadnought guitar and then traveling widely through West Africa after high school drinking up the sounds of the kora and percussion players in Senegal, Carl Nichols began finding his voice and playing style in the haunting open and minor tunings first heard from bluesmen like Skip James, who he covers in his remarkable self-titled debut collection. Buffalo Nichols, which came in 2021, is a stark departure from what Carl would call the cheery “opinionless beer commercial blues” that has come to dominate the genre. Nichols' work is often sparse and direct - just a man with his guitar and a microphone. The stories told in standout songs like “Another Man” and “Living Hell” don't flinch from comparing how the experience of his elders a hundred years ago in the south may not look much different from men like George Floyd dying on that Minneapolis pavement. Is there catharsis or hope in the songs? Are they a call to action? Maybe that's up to us to decide. Carl will admit that it can be tricky trying play his songs like the searing album opener “Lost And Lonesome” in loud bars where people may just want to have a good time and not dive into the backroad history of racial injustice and institutionalized police violence. Thankfully his writing doesn't hide behind niceties and the recordings aren't veiled by sonic artifice - Nichols speaks directly to the isolation and danger of being a young Black man in America and trying to navigate the unease of bringing his stories to an often mostly white Americana-adjacent audience. Even more upbeat numbers like “Back On Top” call to mind the ominous juke-joint growl of John Lee Hooker, bringing us into dimly lit scenes where even late-night pleasure may have its next-morning consequences. If there's one thing we learned during this taping, it's that Carl doesn't want to just "write songs to make people feel good” - but he does want to tell stories that make the isolated and lost feel less so. Maybe that is the most important function of music truly steeped in the blues tradition: the ability to transform pain into progress. The messages may not be what people always want to hear, but the groundswell rising behind Carl's stark timeless tales is indeed growing. With recent appearances on Late Night with Stephen Colbert, NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts and big time dates like Lollapalooza on the books for the summer, folks will be hearing a lot more from Buffalo Nichols. It was a decision not made lightly. However, even before taking the big step of starting a career in music, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols knew he wanted to honor the music and stories of the past by bringing them into the future. Fresh off a rescheduled tour opening for Drive-By Truckers, I manage to catch Carl Nichols at home. In the not so distant future, he'll be back on the road, with a headlining stint bookended by tours with Houndmouth and Valerie June. It's a far cry from the years and months spent at home during quarantine in his newly adopted home of Austin, Texas. Still, he sounds restless. Having graduated from his hometown of Milwaukee and found acclaim with his self-titled debut, Buffalo Nichols, the singer is ready to branch out from the blues genre. It's a familiar feeling for a musician who never feels comfortable staying in one place.
This folk blues artist who originally hails from Milwaukee has been acclaimed by Rolling Stone and NPR and now records for Fat Possum records. He stops by the show to talk about his musical journey and his creative process.

For the past few weeks you’ve heard plenty from our November 2021 Artist of the Month Buffalo Nichols, the Houston-born/Milwaukee-raised singer-guitarist who just released his self-titled debut. Carl Nichols’ worldly travels and keen sense of observation have both leant themselves to the lyrical praises for Buffalo Nichols and just last week he dropped by Studio […]
The self-titled debut LP from Buffalo Nichols is the music of a wandering soul – not necessarily lost, but there’s the intrigue over how the wanderer came to be. It’s a glimpse into the journey through unfamiliar terrain, the lone wolf with no place to stay, no one you know. It’s a reflection of Nichols’ […]

Every month, we ask the NPR Music staff: What's the one song you couldn't escape? What's the one album to which you'll return all year? In October, we fell far into the music of Helado Negro and Jordan Peters, screamed along to Illuminati Hotties and Cerce, and meditated on the voices of Buffalo Nichols and Emily D'Angelo. Music featured on this episode:• Buffalo Nichols: "Another Man" from Buffalo Nichols• Jordan Peters, "Float (feat. Obed Calvaire)"• Emily D'Angelo: "Nausicaa" from enargeia• Helado Negro: "Aguas Frías" from Far In• Illuminati Hotties: "MMMOOOAAAAAYAYA" from Let Me Do One More• Cerce: "Fate" from Cowboy MusicFollow the #NowPlaying blog for the NPR Music staff's favorite new songs.
Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donate!Carl Nichols (aka Buffalo Nichols) found out that he liked playing guitar way more than anything else when he was around 12 years old. He took his older sister's guitar (what? she wasn't using it) and started obsessively learning to play. He'd listen to songs 200 times in a row to get it right. Very soon, he was out performing his peers as a young teen. He started playing gigs around town in many different bands and many different styles, over extending himself. He was perhaps best known for being in the folk duo, Nickel & Rose, who released music from 2017 - 2019. He eventually got burnt out and realized he wanted to play music that resonated with him. He gave himself a break and went overseas to West Africa and Europe. There he discovered there was a way to connect tradition in music with modernism.Carl uses the blues on his self-titled debut album to tell and express Black stories and the Black experience. He chose the stage name Buffalo Nichols because he was fascinated with the Buffalo Soldiers. He actually learned his grandfather was part of an all-Black infantry in the Korean War also called the Buffalo Soldiers. The writing process for the album was a new venture for Carl. Normally, he works on songs slowly and takes his time (he is more of a cat friend, even though he's allergic to them). For this album, he just let the songs flow out of him without overthinking or over editing himself. The end result is a raw record from someone who's pushing himself outside of his comfort zone. However, don't be surprised if he abandons that free flowing process in the future! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've put together a pair of tourmates—past and present—who are separated by decades but united by a deep respect of American music: Patterson Hood and Carl Nichols. Patterson Hood has been in rock bands since he was a pre-teen, and he's been the co-leader of Drive-By Truckers since 1996. The band has explored the sounds and ideas of Southern rock—Hood is from Alabama—over the years, with sounds and lyrics that stretch the boundaries well beyond the world of Lynyrd Skynyrd. As you'll hear in this conversation, Hood is a nuanced thinker and writer. You'll also hear that, of course, on his records, both as a solo artist and a Drive-By Trucker. The band actually released two albums last year, The Unraveling back in January, and then its companion, The New OK, in October. Carl Nichols, aka Buffalo Nichols, toured with Drive-By Truckers in the past, and he's in the midst of another touring opening for them now. Nichols, as you'll hear, has an interesting musical history of his own—he's been more of a genre jumper than his friend Patterson, playing in punk bands early on and then in the Milwaukee folk-ish duo Nickel and Rose. He just released his debut as Buffalo Nichols, and it takes a turn toward what Rolling Stone called “existential blues.” It's just out on the venerated Fat Possum label. Nichols and Hood—that sounds like a great name for a duo, come to think of it—talk here about the protests in Portland, where Hood now lives; how Hood's politics drove off a certain percentage of his audience; and a mutual love of Outkast. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Patterson Hood and Carl Nichols for chatting. This episode was produced by Melissa Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time.

Buffalo Nichols joins us from Austin to discuss his debut solo self-titled album, just out on Fat Possum Records. While the record certainly showcases his masterful skills on the acoustic slide guitar, it is also a collection of great songwriting: soulful, emotional and often challenging lyrics sit atop the beautiful guitar work. Nichols talks about his musical journey, from a childhood spent teaching himself guitar licks by obsessing over his family's records and songs on the radio, playing in a wide variety of bands as a hired gun guitarist, to losing and eventually finding his musical way as a solo performer and songwriter. We also discuss his feelings and intentions as a young black musician creating new music within the traditions of the American blues format. Songs discussed in this episode (all contained on the “Buffalo Nichols” album): “Another Man”, “Lost and Lonesome”, “How to Love”, “These Things” Also: our first ever listener contest! Tune in for your chance to win valuable prizes! Email your entry (or anything else you have to say) to tellyouwhatpodcast@gmail.com
Austin-based guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Carl “Buffalo” Nichols wants to remind folks of the value of the blues as a cultural art form. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” The self-described music nerd considers Delta blues, Chicago blues, West African Malian guitar rhythms, and the African ancestry of the clawhammer banjo in his sonic experimentation and ongoing study of chords and riffs. Nichols, who lived in Milwaukee for most of his life save for his overseas travels, is Fat Possum Records' first blues signing in nearly 20 years and “is grateful to be part of the label's legacy of blues music that also includes Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside,” (Austin Monthly). For his remote performances, Buffalo Nichols wields both a hollow body Fender guitar and a resonator-style guitar, as he plays tunes from his self-titled record. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “These Things”, “How to Love,” “Lost and Lonesome” “These Things”: “How to Love”: “Lost and Lonesome”:

The next hour of The Roadhouse has some real standout sets. I've got a next generation set focused on the future of the blues, and a set of smokin' Freddie King covers. Rod Gator, Popa Chubby, Buffalo Nichols, Neal Black, and Malted Milk & Toni Green are all ahead. It's a pretty big variety, as usual, with a couple of sets leading the way for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

A more mid-tempo show lies ahead, without quite the hectic usual pace. Davy Knowles, Tony Holiday, Buffalo Nichols, Hanna PK, and Miss Lady Blues shine in this hour. There are a couple of new names in that list with Roadhouse debuts, too. So, maybe a little less tempo but no less another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

To clarify, Buffalo Nichols is the solo moniker of songwriter Carl Nichols, one half of renown folk duo Nickel & Rose. (Today’s featured AMM track is a live pop-up session, busker style, of Nichols performing “Life Goes On.”) No matter what genre Nichols has ever played, he always finds his heart returning to the acoustic […]
