In this episode, Cory and Brian explore the mDNA: liminality-commuinitas, two words that definitely sound made up, but aren't. These two sociological terms describe the work that happens in disciple-making movements when we “leave what we've known, enter a difficult knew reality in order to arrive in a new space” (liminality) and the deep family bonds we form as we go through these difficult spaces with others (communitas).  We emphasize the importance of embracing discomfort, rather than waiting on it and offer a simple practice for disciple-makers and microchurches to consider engaging to more fully embrace liminal spaces in order to receive the great joy of communitas.

Structure vs. Communitas — the Two Modes of Human Society

The Living Philosophy

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2023 17:14

Anthropologist Victor Turner, who popularised the term Liminality, found that human society has two modes of interrelatedness that function like a yin and yang — mutually dependant and without which human life would be impossible. Structure is the mode of status and hierarchy in society; Communitas of love, compassion and myth. These two modes show up in very interesting ways in our current society. These can be fruitfully mapped over with the religious and scientific mindsets; with the Constrained and Unconstrained Visions of Thomas Sowell's work; with the Order and Chaos of Jordan Peterson's work Maps of Meaning and with the left- and right-hemispheres of the brain in Iain McGilchrist's work. None of these are 1:1 mapovers but there's something rich even in this difference. This episodes marks the beginning of our explorations in this fertile model of human life. ____________________

The name of his ministry Rip'd for Life. Here is the link. https://www.facebook.com/RIPD4LIFERip'd for Life's guiding principles are as follows:RIP'd 4 Life guiding principlesRelationships come first. Relationships are the ultimate reality of the universe and the relationality of God is the basis for understanding all human issues because we were made in the image of our creator who is a relational being. RIP'd 4 Life will make all of its decisions based on the relational well-being of its participants. If it's not good for the relationship, then we don't do it.Giving as a way of life. Human beings are prone to excess. As a dominant cultural force, consumerism and materialism threaten the human soul and ultimately lead to the destruction of the earth and personal dissatisfaction. At RIP'd 4 Life we exist to give. We are endeavor to give and not take. We exist for the sake of others. We aim to serve in the manner of Christ. All of our participants are challenged to think, act and live outside of oneself. We believe the secret to living is giving.Life in community. Communitas is a Latin word that denotes an intense community spirit where feelings of equality, solidarity and togetherness are present. RIP'd 4 Life Camp experiences aspire to create a true spirit of community. Campers and counselors sleep in the same quarters, eat the same food, and participate in all activities together. There are no persons of privilege and no second class citizens. We are a community that practices embraces a common purpose in Jesus Christ.Experiential Learning. Experience is life's best teacher. Young men are taught many things in theory, but rarely implement those lessons in the context of real life. Experiential learning occurs when human beings are placed in real life situations that demand a response. In order to promote experiential learning, RIP'd 4 Life will create age appropriate activities where experiential learning can occur. There is no set curriculum or content, participants discover what needs to be discovered and those learning experiences are not soon forgotten.Holistic Holiness. Holiness is about having right relationships and pursuing “wholeness.” The “inner man” seeking a right relationship with God is the basis for right relations with others. Once a right relationship is established with God, right relationships can be developed with others, the world we live in and our own bodies. RIP'd 4 Life is interested in the “whole” person (Mind, body and soul) and our activities will reflect the whole being of a person.Jesus not masculinity. Definitions of manhood are wide and varied. Instead of using gender stereotypes and cultural values to inform young men about what they should become, we default to Jesus. We have no indication from scripture that Jesus came to earth for the purpose of modeling manhood. As such, we do not say he is the perfect male, we say he is the perfect human being and his perfect life saves us from ourselves making it possible to be transformed into the image of God. Therefore, we resist narrow definitions of what a man is (e.g., the stronger sex, dominant, etc.). We do not say things like “Man-up,” “Grow-up,” “Be a man,” etc. As a community, we endeavor to be transformed into the likeness of Christ and this requires the embodiment of virtues such as humility, courage, justice, mercy and forgiveness. Our main objective is to seek godliness and the masculine thing will take care of itself. That is not to say traditionally masculine things do not happen at our camps & retreats (sporting competitions, brotherhood, etc.), it is to say our perspective on those things is different and what we do is filtered through the lens of Christ-likeness

“Travel expands time, because you're not experiencing the everyday of what you normally do. It's all about discovery, and experiencing that with other people.” —Pegi Vail In this episode of Deviate, Rolf and Pegi talk about how she originally sought to depict a "visual ethnography" of world travelers, their global impacts, and their power as a "gentrifying" force (2:00); how the world of travel has (and hasn't) changed since Pegi made her film ten years ago, and how immigrants and migrant workers also represent travel communities just like backpackers and expats (11:00); the ways the notion of "journey" can serve as a metaphor for non-travel experiences, and how travel can expand one's sense of time (26:30); what stories travelers choose to tell about places, and how drug-scenes have fueled travel communitas over the years (31:00); the role digital photography now plays in travel, and the individualized notion of what an "explorer" is (39:30); and the importance of allowing yourself to get lost on that road, the "structured danger" of most adventure travel, and relying on your "personness" (rather than technology) as a traveler (49:00). Pegi Vail is an anthropologist and filmmaker who directed the documentary Gringo Trails.  She is also a sustainable-travel consultant whose academic work has focused on visual anthropology, Indigenous media, and the role of storytelling to the political economy of tourism in the developing world. She is the Co-Director of New York University's Center for Media, Culture, and History. Vail is a founding member, curator, and featured storyteller of the popular not-for-profit storytelling collective, The Moth. Have you found yourself caught up in a never-ending healing journey? Are you rushing from workshop to ceremony to retreat trying to peal all the layers of your existential onion? Maybe what you need is healing from your healing! Today on Life is a Festival, Adam Andros Aronovich, creator of “Healing From Healing” offers us levity and a much needed reprieve from our hyper-individualistic personal development. On the show we discuss the fundamental importance of community in healing work. We talk about diminishing returns in chasing peak experiences. We review the modern preoccupation with trauma, the hero's journey, and “cinematic epistemology.” Finally Adam helps us learn to serve with our full being without becoming narcissists and how joy and celebration are potent healing modalities. Adam is the creator of Healing from Healing, a social media platform that casts a critical, skeptical and humorous gaze at Healing Culture. He is a doctoral candidate at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Spain, focusing on Medical Anthropology and Cultural Psychiatry. He is an active member of the Medical Anthropology Research Center (MARC-URV) and part of the Ayahuasca Community Committee at the Chacruna Institute for Psychedelic Plant Medicines. Adam spent more than four years conducting research and extensive fieldwork in the Peruvian Amazon, where he also facilitated Ayahuasca workshops in the context of shamanic and medical tourism. Adam also facilitates preparation and integration processes in private practice, and helps clients reframe “Healing” within relational and recreative frameworks and a secular, humanistic, grounded and open-ended interpretive and epistemic orientation. The Church is God's Plan A for glorifying His name and spreading the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Each person who is a part of the body has a unique and important role in order for the Church to carry out its mission. Through the body we experience Communitas as we share in a special community together on mission. This Communitas sharpens, transforms, and helps us grow deeper in our relationship with God. Further, the Communitas we experience fuels us to live on mission as together we are the living proof of a loving God.

“There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.” This is the last line of one of Rumi's poems. Fear, anxiety and grief are natural responses to the world as-it-is, which is full of poison and full of nectar. There are 3 ways of working with the poison of today's world: we can reject it, we can gorge ourselves without discrimination, or we can partake in healthy doses through the discernment of a middle path. When at a crossroads, the unknown requires us to be fluid and shapeshift. We can hold the tension between what Jung called the spirit of the depths and the spirit of the times in an alchemical process. If our diets are too pure, we can become rigid and weaken ourselves. If we don't live with reality, reality will come to live with us. The more we practice being present with reality as-it-is, the greater our capacity for life and the more we become a healing balm for the world. Wonder makes us bigger; it stretches us and puts us in a receptive state, ready to experience the unknown. Six qualities of wonder are openness, curiosity, bewilderment, hope, connection, and admiration or praise. Communitas refers to community taken to a deeper level, typically associated with the presence of the divine. We can be inspired by other people's strengths. If we want to make sure the path we are on is the right path, then we have to be willing to get lost. What if there's wisdom in staying with grief, which does the work so that we can see and think and embrace each other differently? Sometimes the only way we will ever kneel and kiss the ground is if we are brought to our knees. Angelon is a workshop leader with a background in Jungian psychology, an editor and author of As It Is, Under the Punnai Tree, The Baul Tradition, Caught in the Beloved's Petticoats, Enlightened Duality (with Lee Lozowick), Krishna's Heretic Lovers, and The Art of Contemplation.

In this episode we bounce from community and connection to self-knowing to building a better world. If we don't know ourselves, then how can we support others? If we can't sit with our own pain, how can we attend the pain of those we hold dearest? In birth and in death, there is a transformation of spirit. You don't get a vote as to how or when these things events unfold; the only thing we can control is how we spend our time from now until then. Ekstasis vs. Catharsis

The Living Philosophy

The etymology of philosophy leads to the love of wisdom. The paths to wisdom can be divided into two: ekstasis and catharsis. Jamie Wheal is a thinker who utilises this distinction in his book Recapture the Rapture and on podcasts (where he includes a third aspect: Communitas — community/sangha). The distinction between ekstasis and catharsis is a powerful one. Ekstasis is the higher perspective; it is being on the mountain and surveying the entire landscape. Catharsis on the other hand is the way under — it is Dante going through Hell and emerging into Heaven. Ultimately both ekstasis and catharsis lead us to the same place: wisdom but the journey is very different. We can see philosophers throughout history leaning more towards one direction or another: Plato, Plotinus, Parmenides and Spinoza lead us towards the high insights of ekstasis; Heraclitus, Nietzsche and Kierkegaard lead us towards the deep wisdom of catharsis. _________________ Learning Resources:• Recapture the Rapture by Jamie Wheal https://www.recapturetherapture.com/• The Road to Eleusis: Unveiling the Secret of the Mysteries by Gordon Wasson https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/186043/the-road-to-eleusis-by-r-gordon-wasson/• The Gay Science by Friedrich Nietzsche https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/94578.The_Gay_Science _________________ ⭐ Support the channel (thank you!) ▶ Patreon: https://patreon.com/thelivingphilosophy ▶ Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/thelivingphilosophy________________
