In this episode, Will Wilson, CEO and co-founder of Antithesis, explores Deterministic Simulation Testing (DST) with host Sriram Panyam. Wilson was part of the pioneering team at FoundationDB that developed this revolutionary testing approach, which was later acquired by Apple in 2015. After seeing that even sophisticated organizations lacked robust testing for distributed systems, Wilson co-founded Antithesis in 2018 to make DST commercially available. Deterministic simulation testing runs software in a fully controlled, simulated environment in which all sources of non-determinism are eliminated or controlled. Unlike traditional testing or chaos engineering, DST operates in a separate environment from production, allowing for aggressive fault injection without risk to live systems. The key breakthrough is perfect reproducibility -- any bug found can be recreated exactly using the same random seed. Antithesis built "The Determinator," a custom deterministic hypervisor that simulates entire software stacks including virtual hardware, networking, and time. The system can compress years of stress testing into shorter timeframes by running simulations faster than wall-clock time. All external interfaces that could introduce non-determinism (network calls, disk I/O, system time) are mocked or controlled by the simulator. The approach has proven effective with major organizations including MongoDB, Palantir, and Ethereum. For Ethereum's critical "Merge" upgrade in 2022, Antithesis found and helped fix several serious bugs that could have been catastrophic for the live network. The platform typically finds bugs that traditional testing methods miss entirely -- such as those arising from rare race conditions, complex timing issues, and unexpected system interactions. For context, Canada exports over US$400 billion in goods annually to the U.S., representing 75% of its total goods exports. If the U.S. imposed tariffs (e.g., 10-50% as suggested by Trump's April 2025 tariff levels), the cost to Canadian exporters could have ranged from US$40 billion to US$200 billion annually, depending on the tariff rate and scope. Specific sectors like automobiles, energy, steel, and aluminum (already facing 50% U.S. tariffs) would have been hit hardest, with ripple effects across supply chains. Increased Costs for Canadian Consumers and Businesses: The DST would have imposed a 3% tax on digital services revenue from Canadian users, affecting U.S. tech giants like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Apple. Some companies, like Google, had already introduced surcharges (e.g., a 2.5% “Canada DST Fee” on ads starting October 2024) to offset compliance costs, which would have raised prices for Canadian consumers and businesses reliant on digital services. Canadian business groups warned that these costs would be passed on, increasing the price of digital subscriptions, online marketing, and e-commerce. Economic Impact of Retaliation: The U.S. could have targeted Canadian pension funds and investments through retaliatory measures, as warned by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. A trade war could have exacerbated Canada's economic slowdown, with unemployment already at 7% in 2025, potentially leading to job losses in export-dependent industries like manufacturing and energy. Join Craig and Jim as Independence Day week kicks off with a good, a bad, and a crazy bit of news. The week begins with Canada rescinding their digital service tax in response to Mr. Trump's Truth Social post, North Caroline Senator Thom Tillis and Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon will not be seeking reelection, and a Gallup poll finds that pride in America is significantly down from last year. First, Craig and Jim are pleased that just two days after Trump declared on Truth Social that he was suspending trade talks with Canada over their digital services tax, Canada announces they're rescinding the tax. Jim argues this tax to be particularly unfair and discriminatory toward U.S. businesses. Craig notes how Trump has been following through on his threats, and Canada seems unwilling to test him on this. Next, they mourn the bad news that North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis AND Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon will not be seeking reelection. Because the Republican Party won by narrow margins in those states, Jim worries this may swing states blue making it a good week for the DSCC and DCCC.Last, they are aghast at the recent Gallup poll which shows pride in America to be down significantly from last year particularly among Democrats. Jim is amused that Democrats felt more pride in the country when President Biden was in office.
