The whiplash news cycle around the Trump trade war continues and if you can't keep up, you're not alone.Last Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump said all trade talks with Canada were off because of a new "digital services tax" that was supposed to come into effect on Monday, targeting companies like Netflix. Late Sunday night, the federal government announced that the tax was being rescinded, and that talks with the U.S. were back on.Keeping up? It's a lot. So did Carney capitulate? The DST was set to bring in billions of dollars for Canada. Did the feds do the right thing?Host Cormac Mac Sweeney is discussing with Dalhousie University professor Dr. Lori Turnbull. [RERUN] C2E8: "Our Four Favorites" [Masters of VGM] - orig rel. 06/30/2022 (see 2025 show note addendum!)

Nerd Noise Radio

[2025 Addendum….sorry for the ultra long-winded] Normally, we only share one rerun a month at Nerd Noise Radio. But due to the confluence of a) our having missed the May rerun completely, b) our not getting a June rerun out until the very end of the month, and c) a very important thematic connection to an event currently happening in the VGM podcast scene this month, I'm releasing…..not one……not two……not four…..but THREE reruns in July! From 2022 through 2024, the greater VGM podcast community participated in a glorious group experiment called “Masters of VGM” (or “MoVGM” for short - I think I might've even been the one to coin the shorthand…..maybe), where a master theme was decided upon by the community, and then every participating podcast would do an episode, or a handful of episodes in keeping with the crowdsourced theme. Nerd Noise Radio participated all three years - with a Channel 2 in 2022, a Channel 1 in 2024, and in 2023, with a whopping FOUR installments where we had a Channel 1, a Channel 2, and two Channel Fs. Channel F, for the new faces in the crowd is our mechanism for betas, and bonuses, and things which just don't fit the mold for a regular episode. Channel F is “format agnostic” and does not have any sort of regular release cadence whatsoever. So, “F-isodes” as I call them (and am probably WAY too proud of myself for that), can be just whatever, and come out just whenever. The people who devised and oversaw MoVGM have largely significantly reduced their presence in the podcast scene over the past couple years, and so had elected to not continue MoVGM into 2025. However, a handful of us, Alex “The Messenger” Messenger of “A VGM Journey” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/a-vgm-journey), Professor Tom from “Shujin Academy VGM Club” (https://terraplayer.com/shows/shujin-academy-vgm-club), and myself have decided that, while not formally reviving MoVGM, we were going to do something of our own, in that same spirit. While the name hasn't been officially finalized as of this writing on July 2nd, and could still change, the “working title” (that will very likely become the final title), which was proposed by Professor Tom is “VGM Hall of Fame” I'll go ahead and dub it “HoF” for short. Naturally, we're trying to also inspire other podcasters to join us so that it is not just we three, but at the very, very least, there will be an HoF episode from all of us on the theme of “a soundtrack that belongs in a theoretical “VGM Hall of Fame” (hence the name). Nerd Noise Radio's contribution to this will be a Channel 1 featuring the Super Metroid soundtrack (C1E97). If I have the time, and the mental energy, I might also supplement this with an F-isode on a much more obscure soundtrack that begs to enjoy greater awareness and celebration (Lucid 9, if it ends up happening). One other major difference between HoF and MoVGM is that MoVGM occurred in June (2023 was so big that it extended into July) where HoF will occur in July. We all wanted to do this in June, but we were all too deep into production of our respective June content at the time that we all agreed to just push it back to July instead. Anyway, over the river and through the woods, to the point I *FINALLY* get: in a bid to not only help draw extra attention to HoF and hopefully drum up a little excitement for it, among both listeners as well as other podcasters, especially prospective participants, as well as to simply celebrate some of the glory that was this remarkable moment in time for a community, this month, I will rerun our 2022 MoVGM contribution, our 2023 Channel 2 contribution, which was a sort of “spiritual sequel” to our 2022 outing (with links to our other 2023 contributions in that rerun's show notes), and finally, to our 2024 offering. And naturally, we'll start with 2022. The theme of 2022 was “which composers would you put on your ‘VGM Mount Rushmore'”? So everyone was to pick four composers. Since Ch 2 was Hugues and I, rather than picking just two, we each picked four for a grand total, of course, of eight, and then did a thing where we each picked one track from each of the eight composers (one each for our own composers, as well as one each for the other guys' composers). With this being a 2022 production, all the usual caveats about production quality differences and deficiencies. Between a lesser mic and less fully developed production techniques, the sound quality will not be up to the standards of a 2025 episode (I also hadn't started editing out the “umms” yet….apologies for that!). But it's still pretty decent. Certainly decent enough that it doesn't really feel like a barrier to enjoyment like, say, a 2018, or especially 2017 episode would be. And so, without further ado: our first of three reruns this month, the first of three to celebrate the memory of MoVGM as well as hopefully whet people's appetites for HoF: C2E8: “Our Four Favorites” - originally released 06/30/2022.   Enjoy!   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's Broadcast is C2E8 for Theme Thursday, June 30th, 2022. We keep the Meet recording in case there is an emergency with the Audacity recording, but otherwise don't use it in the final episode, and I just align and combine our high quality Audacity recordings. On this episode, however, (a first for Ch 2) we lost a portion of Hugues' Audacity recording, so we did have to use our fallback a little bit. At the very bottom of the show notes, I'll include a LONG[ISH] VERSION which explains more. I did everything I could to minimize the impact of the Google Meet recording in the final episode. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period. Thank you for your attention to this matter! https://twitter.com/disclosetv/status/1939522597550518357 If Canada had kept the Digital Services Tax (DST) in place, the financial and economic consequences would have been significant, primarily due to potential U.S. retaliation and disruptions to the Canada-U.S. trade relationship.   Lost Tax Revenue vs. Retaliatory Tariffs: The DST was projected to generate approximately C$5.9 billion (about US$4.3 billion) over five years, or roughly C$1.2 billion (US$870 million) annually, according to Canada's 2024 federal budget However, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on Canadian goods in response to the DST, which could have far exceeded the tax revenue. For context, Canada exports over US$400 billion in goods annually to the U.S., representing 75% of its total goods exports. If the U.S. imposed tariffs (e.g., 10-50% as suggested by Trump's April 2025 tariff levels), the cost to Canadian exporters could have ranged from US$40 billion to US$200 billion annually, depending on the tariff rate and scope. Specific sectors like automobiles, energy, steel, and aluminum (already facing 50% U.S. tariffs) would have been hit hardest, with ripple effects across supply chains. Increased Costs for Canadian Consumers and Businesses: The DST would have imposed a 3% tax on digital services revenue from Canadian users, affecting U.S. tech giants like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Apple. Some companies, like Google, had already introduced surcharges (e.g., a 2.5% “Canada DST Fee” on ads starting October 2024) to offset compliance costs, which would have raised prices for Canadian consumers and businesses reliant on digital services. Canadian business groups warned that these costs would be passed on, increasing the price of digital subscriptions, online marketing, and e-commerce. Economic Impact of Retaliation: The U.S. could have targeted Canadian pension funds and investments through retaliatory measures, as warned by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. A trade war could have exacerbated Canada's economic slowdown, with unemployment already at 7% in 2025, potentially leading to job losses in export-dependent industries like manufacturing and energy.   Sector-Specific Impacts: Automotive and Manufacturing: Tariffs on automobiles and parts would have disrupted integrated North American supply chains, increasing costs for Canadian manufacturers and potentially le...

Jim is back though Greg is gone for today's 3 Martini Lunch. In his stead is radio personality Craig Collins. Join Craig and Jim as Independence Day week kicks off with a good, a bad, and a crazy bit of news. The week begins with Canada rescinding their digital service tax in response to Mr. Trump's Truth Social post, North Caroline Senator Thom Tillis and Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon will not be seeking reelection, and a Gallup poll finds that pride in America is significantly down from last year. First, Craig and Jim are pleased that just two days after Trump declared on Truth Social that he was suspending trade talks with Canada over their digital services tax, Canada announces they're rescinding the tax. Jim argues this tax to be particularly unfair and discriminatory toward U.S. businesses. Craig notes how Trump has been following through on his threats, and Canada seems unwilling to test him on this. Next, they mourn the bad news that North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis AND Nebraska Rep. Don Bacon will not be seeking reelection. Because the Republican Party won by narrow margins in those states, Jim worries this may swing states blue making it a good week for the DSCC and DCCC.Last, they are aghast at the recent Gallup poll which shows pride in America to be down significantly from last year particularly among Democrats. Jim is amused that Democrats felt more pride in the country when President Biden was in office. Ultimately, Jim and Craig argue that pride in one's country should not be contingent upon who is in office. Please visit our great sponsors:No missed calls, no missed customers with OpenPhone. Ecco nuovo decreto flussi, 500mila ingressi in 3 anni.

Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the US budget debate has financial markets on edge. But first up today, the Chicago PMI did not report the expected modest bounceback in June from the very weak May result. In fact is stayed in a severe contraction, disappointing everyone involved. It's been nearly three years since they have had any regular expansion and 2025 looks like it is shaping up the be the worst of the three. The Dallas Fed's factory survey for June was weak as well featuring shrinking new order levels. At least it was little-changed from May.As you read this, the US Senate is debating, and about to vote, on the big Trump budget bill. After years of complaining about US deficit spending and refusing to move the debt ceiling law, they are weighing whether to accede to Trump's demand to give him a free pass on both, including 'hiding' US$3.8 tln of tax cut costs. If they pass the budget, it is likely the bond market will deliver a thumbs down response, one that will affect global financial markets. On the US tariff trade bullying, there are few negotiations going well at present, for any of the parties involved. In Canada, they seem to have conceded the digital services tax issue to try and make progress on bigger issues. But the DST is still a live issue in the UK-US talks.Meanwhile, things are softening in India too. Their industrial production was up +1.2% in May from the same month in 2024, their weakest expansion in nine months and well weaker than expected. In China, there were no surprises and little movement in their official PMIs for June. Their factory sector contracted very marginally - again - and the services sector expanded marginally, also again. Basically they describe an economy marking time. But also one resilient to the trade shocks thrown at it which were designed to throw it off balance. That just hasn't happened, yet anyway.German inflation came in at 2.0% in June, a touch less than anticipated and little-different from April and May's 2.1% level. As small as it was, they weren't expecting a dip. Food prices there rose a modest +2.0% but keeping a lid on other rises was the -3.5% drop in energy prices. In Australia, Cotality/CoreLogic said its Home Value Index rose +0.6% in June from May, up marginally from the prior month but it is the strongest monthly gain since June 2024. Improved market sentiment in most major cities was behind the firming and active first home buyers are behind that. On a yearly basis, national home values climbed 2.7%. Meanwhile, rental growth continued to ease, with national rents up +3.4% over the past 12 months, the slowest annual increase since early 2021.Global air cargo demand rose +2.2% in May from a year ago, up +3.0% for international airfreight. The Asia/Pacific volumes were up a very healthy +8.2% on the same basis, no doubt related to the rush to beat US tariff deadlines. These overall volumes would have been better if the North American components hadn't been so weak (+-5.8%).Meanwhile, May air passenger travel rose +5.0%, up +6.7% for international travel and up +13.3% in the Asia/Pacific region. The only region to decline was North America (-0.5%) and mostly because of weak domestic travel. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.23%, and down -4 bps from yesterday at this time. The price of gold will start today at US$3,2952/oz, and up +US$19 from yesterday.American oil prices are marginally softer from yesterday at just under US$65/bbl while the international Brent price is down -US$1, now just over US$66.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is now just on 60.9 USc, up +30 bps from yesterday. Against the Aussie we are unchanged at 92.7 AUc. Against the euro we are little-changed at 51.8 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at 68.2 and +10 bps firmer than yesterday. The bitcoin price starts today at US$107,683 and up +0.2% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has stayed low at just on +/-0.9%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news we are now halfway through 2025, closer to the next summer holiday break than the last one. We may need it more this time because economic 'progress' is hard to find.Looking ahead this week, the big end of month data dumps for May from the RBNZ will give us an updated look at mortgage and term deposit activity. The ANZ will also update us on their business sentiment survey for June. Then later in the week the June updates from the real estate industry will be released. In Australia it will also be about retail and trade updates for May.The week end with the US on another summer holiday break, this one for their Independence Day. Their June labour market report will come a day earlier this week (another low +129,000 is expected), preceded by PMI updates from all over. Markets also expect the US to announce tariff actions after the so-called 90 day pause. But Trump deadlines mean little in war and other diplomatic areas so don't be surprised if they mean little here too. He will go head if they don't hurt his own businesses, pull back if they do.Of more importance to us will be the results of both Chinese and Japanese data and surveys. In China, deflationary pressures not helped by the tariff war are keeping China's industrial profits in a low zone. They barely hit ¥600 bln in May and that was their lowest level for a May month since 2019 and -9.1% lower than May 2024. For the five months they were down -1.1% so the pace of decline is unfortunately building.Across the Pacific in the US, the squeeze on American household incomes shows up in the latest data for personal incomes and spending, this data for May. Incomes were only +1.7% higher than a year ago. Decreases in income support for struggling households is showing up in this data. And after inflation, they will be going backwards on the income front. On the consumption front, spending was up +2.2% from a year ago, also lower than the May 2.4% CPI inflation. This is a sure sign of rising economic stress that is spreading. The final reading of the University of Michigan survey of June consumer sentiment was out overnight and it confirmed the spreading household stress. This survey has been stuck at one of its worst readings on record for two months after plunging almost -30% in the first four months of 2025. Over the 80 years of the survey, a drop this large this fast has almost always predicted a recession. Sentiment readings improved slightly at the start of June but were -18% lower than at the start of the year to indicate Americans expect much higher prices and a much slower economy in the coming year. It should be no surprise this is the outcome of the changed US public policy direction - but the financial markets are ignoring this signal; willfully it seems. They seem to be overlooking these same survey results that show sentiment has fallen fastest this year for the most well-off consumers, whose post-pandemic spending spree helped insulate the American economy from recession then. They aren't there to do it this time, according to the UofM survey data.In Canada, they got weekend news that Trump is going to use tariffs to punish them for trying to tax US Big Tech companies via its Digital Services Tax initiative. The US wants free access to Canada and tax-free. Earlier the Canadians had confirmed the DST, which had been passed by their Parliament, would go into effect on June 30.Separately, Canada has ordered one of the world's largest video surveillance equipment manufacturers, State-owned Hikvision, to cease operations there on national security grounds. The order bars Hikvision from conducting business in Canada and prohibits government departments and agencies from purchasing its products. Existing installations of Hikvision equipment across government properties are under review to ensure their eventual removal. Hikvision cameras and monitoring systems are widely available in Australia and New Zealand.Economic sabotage may be spreading, but so are climate risks. It is early in the northern hemisphere summer season still, but both the US and Europe are struggling with dangerous heat dome conditions. China is not immune. These are sure to have economic implications if they extend through to September as expected. The UST 10yr yield is now at 4.27%, and unchanged from Saturday. The price of gold will start today at US$3,273/oz, and little-changed from Saturday. A week ago it was at US$3365/oz so a -2.8% fall from then.American oil prices are +50c softer from Saturday at just on US$65/bbl while the international Brent price is now just on US$67.50/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is now just on 60.6 USc, up +20 bps from Saturday. A week ago it was at 59.7 USc so a net +1.5% appreciation. Against the Aussie we are -10 bps softer at 92.7 AUc. Against the euro we are unchanged at 51.7 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at 68.1 and +10 bps firmer than Saturday. A week ago it was at 67.7 so a net +40 bps gain. The bitcoin price starts today at US$107,509 and up +0.6% from this time Saturday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has stayed low at just on +/-0.6%.You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. Daylight saving time (DST) It's the practice of advancing your clocks by one hour during the spring and summer months, and then turning them back in the autumn and winter. The idea is to make better use of natural daylight and save energy. But some people question if it really works and if there are any advantages to us at all.   Daylight saving time was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 to conserve candles. But it wasn't implemented in the United States until 1918, during World War I, as a way to save fuel. Since then, DST has been adopted by many countries around the world . It  was first introduced in the UK in 1916, during World War I, as a way to save coal. In the UK, DST begins on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October. But what are the benefits of DST? Does it really save energy? Does changing our clocks affect our sleep and well-being? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! The last couple of weeks, we've been deep in the world of buying businesses. But what happens when it's time to cash out? Maybe you're ready to sell your business, that investment property you've managed for years, or another major asset you've poured your energy into. If you're like most people, the thrill of a big sale is quickly followed by a less-exciting thought: “Wait, how much am I going to owe in taxes?” It's the classic one-two punch—first the celebration, then the sinking feeling as you picture Uncle Sam's hand reaching for a chunk of your hard-earned gains. But here's the good news: you actually have options. Real, legal, IRS-approved options. And the right strategy can mean the difference between watching your profits shrink and putting your money to work for you—sometimes for years to come. Of course, things get a little trickier if you have a mortgage or other debt on the property, but don't worry—we'll break that down too. Let's start with one of the oldest tricks in the book: the 1031 Exchange. If you own investment real estate, you've probably heard about this one. The idea is simple: sell your property, buy another “like-kind” property, and—if you follow the rules—kick that tax bill down the road. But here's the twist: if you've got a mortgage, you'll need to replace that debt with equal or greater debt on your next property, or pony up the difference in cash. Otherwise, the IRS will want a piece of the action right away. So yes, leverage matters! Now, maybe you're tired of being a landlord but still want those tax perks. Enter the Delaware Statutory Trust, or DST. This is essentially 1031 exchanging into a syndication that is designed for this type of thing. You sell your property and, instead of buying another one yourself, you buy a slice of a big, professionally managed property—like an apartment complex or shopping center. DSTs often come with their own loans, so you can match your old mortgage and keep the tax deferral going. The upside? No more midnight calls about leaky faucets. The downside? You're trusting someone else to run the show and they need to be good at it (just like any syndication operator). And, there are some rules and restrictions that can affect your returns negatively. But what if you're selling a business? That's where Employee Stock Ownership Plans, or ESOPs, come in. Imagine selling your company to the people who helped you build it—your employees—and deferring a big chunk of your capital gains tax in the process. It's a win-win, but if your business has debt, things can get complicated fast. This is definitely a strategy where you'll want a seasoned advisor in your corner. Now, let's talk about installment sales and structured sales. In this scenario, instead of getting paid all at once for your asset, you spread out the payments—and the taxes—over several years. Structured sales even bring in a third party to guarantee those payments, adding an extra layer of security. But—and this is a big but—if you have a mortgage, the IRS treats the amount the buyer pays off as if you got that money in cash on day one. So, you'll pay taxes on that portion right away. For example, if you sell for $1 million but owe $600,000, you can only defer taxes on the $400,000 you actually receive over time. The more debt you have, the less you can defer. And finally, we have the Deferred Sales Trust—the topic of this week's Wealth Formula Episode. Think of this as the “supercharged” version of a structured sale. Instead of waiting on the buyer for payments, you transfer your asset to a trust, which sells it and invests the proceeds. You get to choose how and when you receive your money, and the trust can invest in all kinds of assets while your taxes stay deferred. It's flexible, it's powerful, and it gives you the chance to grow your money while you wait. Which of these strategies is right for your situation depends on your goals, your assets,

Join Scot and Greg as they discuss the GOP's push for consumer freedom, Democrats' extreme opposition to making sure only citizens can vote, and President Trump's call to make Daylight Saving Time permanent.First, they praise President Trump's executive order restoring consumer choice over showerhead water pressure, along with a U.S. Senate vote to repeal a Biden-era rule targeting gas-powered water heaters. Scot and Greg see these moves as a strong rejection of the left's absurd climate agenda and unnecessary government interference in everyday life.Next, they cheer the House passage of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. Democrats are leveling bizarre claims that the bill would disenfranchise married women who changed their names. Scot and Greg dismantle those arguments and call out Rep. Eric Swalwell and others for resorting to profanity and theatrics  to act like they're fighting hard against the GOP.Finally, as President Trump calls for making Daylight Saving Time (DST) permanent, Scot explains why permanent Standard Time makes far more sense if you're going to make one time permanent. He also points out that America tried year-round DST back in the 1970s and hated it. And, while neither of them particularly enjoy the time changes, Scot and Greg also wonder why so many people are suddenly obsessed with this issue when nobody really seemed to care about it a generation ago. Please visit our great sponsors:Future-proof business operations with NetSuite by Oracle. In recent years, non-traded and perpetual life REITs (REITs that don't have a predetermined termination date, allowing them to operate and reinvest capital continuously without a forced dissolution) have emerged as attractive vehicles for real estate investors, especially within the 721 UPREIT DST structure. While these vehicles offer tax-deferred exchange benefits and diversified exposure to real estate, investors must scrutinize several key financial metrics to avoid hidden pitfalls. Kay Properties reviews scores of new DST and 721 UPREIT offerings and DST sponsor companies each year. We take our due diligence process very seriously, ensuring that each potential offering is strictly vetted before it is allowed to be posted on our www.kpi1031.com marketplace. Our goal is to provide our clients with thoroughly reviewed investment opportunities, allowing them to make informed decisions when considering Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs) and 721 UPREIT investments.  As we consider a DST or 721 UPREIT offering and/or a sponsor firm, we use some very specific items within our due diligence process.

Twice a year, Americans adjust their clocks—except in Arizona and Hawaii. But is daylight saving time (DST) still necessary, or is it an outdated practice that needs to go? In this lively debate, American Potential host David From sits down with Stephen Shadegg, AFP's Arizona State Director, and Tim Parrish, AFP's Virginia State Director, to discuss whether DST should be permanent, abolished, or left up to the states. Stephen, who has never had to change his clocks in Arizona, argues for the stability and efficiency of sticking to standard time, while Tim makes the case that DST leads to lower crime, increased productivity, and economic benefits. As Congress considers the Protect Sunshine Act to end the biannual clock changes, this episode dives into the historical reasons for DST, its impact on businesses and public safety, and whether it truly benefits the country. Should states decide for themselves, or does America need a unified time policy? Tune in to hear both sides and decide where you stand!
