“It is hard to maintain a low body fat percentage on a Vegan diet without increasing activity significantly.” I got into nutrition after my mother died of cancer and after understanding the effects food had on my body. I have ulcerative colitis and certain foods caused inflammation and certain foods caused the opposite...or neutral. When I was learning nutrition, I was alongside athletes...I remember someone saying some people eat to live and some people live to eat...different attitudes and beliefs around food... the athletes were asking really intelligent questions...if In add this and this will it improve my speed....and I asked questions like...yeah but if you fancy a bit of chocolate? and i realised that they believed food was food and i believed food was pleasure... To finally understand what my fellow athletic students were talking about, we have Matt Lovell on the show. Matt is a specialist performance nutritionist with 18 years practical experience in elite sports, working directly with international teams (England Rugby and Football, Manchester City, Tottenham, Aston Villa) and many individual athletes (Jonny Wilkinson, James Haskell, Jermain Defoe, Jodie Taylor, Will Sharman, Vic Wild to name a few). What do we need to know about our adrenals? How can we tell if they’re burnt out, and how can we heal them? Find out as I share some insights from a chapter of my book that’s coming out soon! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode55. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The adrenal glands and their function What cortisol does in our bodies 11 Signs and symptoms that your adrenals are burnt out The different stages of adrenal fatigue Healing your adrenal glands The benefits of infrared sauna Adaptogenic herbs to support your adrenals Key Takeaways: Your adrenals control your stress response, your weight, your blood sugar, your blood pressure, and your immune system. In fact, they are our primary survival organs. Also, your adrenals can cause you to experience multiple symptoms, which we commonly refer to as adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue actually refers to HPA axis dysfunction. Its symptoms include exhaustion, low thyroid function, weight gain, sleep disturbances, lack of focus and concentration, and sugar, salt, and fat cravings Your adrenals communicate with your brain and vice versa. And when you are exposed to certain triggers such as blood sugar highs and lows, environmental toxins or perceived stress -- poor quality of sleep, blue light pollution, circadian rhythm disruption, gut inflammation -- you can impair this communication between the brain and the adrenals. Hormonal balance is essential to good health and your adrenal glands are really at the center stage in relation to the body’s ability to regulate your hormones. In fact, roughly 70% to 80% of all doctor visits are for stress-related conditions for which doctors have little or no training and nothing to offer than some temporary relief care. 11 Signs and symptoms that your adrenals are burnt out: You have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or do not feel rested upon waking. You’re craving fat, sugar, and salt. Your memory and your focus are just lacking. You’re experiencing digestive issues. You feel irritable and anxious. You get tired most afternoons, you are craving sugar and salt, and maybe you are even looking for a caffeine fix. You’re gaining weight primarily around your waist. Your hormones are a mess, so maybe you are dealing with PMS or you’re having issues with infertility, maybe even low libido. You find that you’re getting sick more often. Not only that but you’re also having a really hard time recovering from a cold or flu. You get angry quickly and you find yourself being snappy. You have low thyroid function. All kinds of perceived stress begin this really nasty cycle of adrenal fatigue, which now starts to slow down and impair your thyroid, which now also slows down and impairs your gut health, which impacts your immune system. And now, this leads to leaky gut, which can be a trigger for autoimmune disease. Action Steps: Test your adrenals with a salivary or a urine test to better understand how they’re functioning. The test that you really want to look for is something that looks at your cortisol over a 24-hour range so that you can really see the peaks and dips of your cortisol and how it occurs throughout the day. Support both your adrenals and your thyroid. Heal your adrenal glands: Practice relaxation. Find the meditation that works for you. Look up Yoga Nidra apps or download a meditation app like Headspace. Try infrared sauna therapy. Have a hot bath. Practice sleep hygiene and create healthy boundaries around sleep. Implement herbs and supplements. Samantha said: “In nature, constant stress is rare. In our human world, however, we are dealing with all kinds of stressors and we are pushing our adrenals into overdrive, and we’re impairing this communication between the adrenals and the brain. This is what’s leading to burnout and exhaustion.” “When it comes to healing your adrenal glands, you need to know that there is just no quick fix. You can’t just pop a pill and call it a day… It is the lifestyle shifts that have the biggest impact on your adrenal health.” Thanks for listening! I’ve been interested in optimal performance for quite some time but I was focusing very much into my tools, the way I use technologies, computers, methods and so on. Basically what’s outside of me and how I interact with that world, how I solve problems. I was optimizing the way I work and how I learn and all that. But doing that I discovered that health is also a key component and taking care of your temple - your body - is super important if you want to really perform, ultimately. Ahead of the release of this chapter, Teemu shared his thoughts on the key variables in the work environment which are able to be altered for higher performance. The Problems: Limited Movement Lighting Air Quality Water Quality Stress How to Deal with Workplace Environment Problems: Much of this is discussed in more detail in the podcast episode. Many of us do not move enough throughout the day. Have you ever wondered why your Fitbit or Jawbone asks you to get 10,000 steps? From an evolution perspective, our ancestors moved this much. When you are stuck at a desk during the day, how is this possible to achieve? For one, get a standing desk. A standing desk, or adjustable desk, will force you to get up and move throughout the day. In addition, you can schedule meetings over walks, coffee, or even workouts to get more movement in your day. Our offices beam fluorescent lights throughout the day. While some may leave the office before sundown, others still work well into the night, at home, and even before bed. This is not to mention how you are staring at a screen all day long. To prevent long-term eye damage and get the most from your lights, utilize a one/two punch. Place Iris or F.lux on all of your devices. After you outfit the technology, switch your lights to Philips Hue's lights and have them follow the sun. Studies demonstrate the continued presence of nanoparticles in our air. Some of these nanoparticles, as well as mold and other toxins, end up in our brain and lead to sub-optimal performance. Fix this potential issue by outfitting your office and home with HEPA filters. Much of the United States tap water contains chlorine, fluoride, and potentially heavy metals. Reduce your risks through the use of a water filter. Teemu mentions Brita in the episode. Alternatives include Berkey Water Filters and Therasage (the CEO was on the show to speak about EMF here). Stress can lead to illness. However, stress is also beneficial. Remember the last deadline? As it came closer, the deadline drove you to focus. Much of stresses impact on us has to do with our perception of stress. You build stress resiliency through techniques like meditation and breathing. In this interview Dr. Mary Bove will discuss the role of adaptogenic herbs for stress. Adaptogenic herbs refers to herbs that support physiological processes and promotion of homeostasis, for example, decreased cellular sensitivity to stress. Herbs have a long history of usage for human health. We now have the opportunity to improve on the historical uses through modern science. We now have the science to explore deeply into the chemistry of herbs and create products that bring out those properties. We now have more and more clinical evidence of the structure/function benefits of herbs. Natural Treatment For Menopause http://learntruehealth.com/menopause/ Weight Loss & Menopause With Herbs And Chinese Medicine I have Dana LaVoie here today to teach us about menopause. Even if you're not menopausal yet or past menopause, it is important to know this important stage in a woman's life. LaVoie is a licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist practicing for about 14 years. Women's health and menopause are her specializations as well as in tonic herbs. There are so many of her clients who have benefitted so much from Chinese medicine. I remember my mom going through menopause and she for 5 years, only saw an Acupuncturist which is a traditional Chinese doctor. She was cooking herbs on the stove every day. I never saw her go through hot flashes. Hence, it was like she never went through menopause. It's amazing to see Natural Medicine give her so much relief. Consequently, if we're really healthy, we don't have to have symptoms. Understanding Menopause Weight loss is a hot issue around women of all ages but especially around menopause or during menopause. Most women complain of the sudden weight gain. "During menopause, your hormones are changing. If you're really healthy, your body will be able to keep hormones in balance. Your metabolism stays good," LaVoie said. Understanding Weight Loss & Weight Gain "If your body can't keep up, that's when you get the menopausal symptoms like weight gain," said LaVoie. "What you eat is a lot more than losing weight. Think of diet as a way of nourishing your body to be healthy. Only then it becomes a lifestyle." LaVoie suggests eating a warm, easy breakfast like congee is easy to digest. Congee is a Chinese comfort food that is easy to digest. It's grains that are cooked for a long time in a large amount of liquid. Like a porridge. "If you're having trouble losing weight, look at how much cold, raw or frozen food you're eating," explains LaVoie. "Because that puts out your digestive fire which is your metabolism. You can gain weight just by eating cold, raw or frozen food." My husband eats frozen organic blueberries. And he started gaining weight. He just eats a handful of cashews, some vegetables or meat or some eggs for breakfast. But whenever he eats frozen blueberries, he gains weight. LaVoie has a client with the same situation. The client's diet is smoothies made with fruits and ice, salads which are raw and cold, and yogurt yet she's still gaining weight. LaVoie immediately knew what the problem was. Hence, It was an easy fix. Foods For Certain Body Types I know Ayurvedic medicine is not Chinese medicine but I know they have identified different body personalities or 'dosha' wherein somebody types should eat more warm foods and another type. "There are people whose symptoms or problems they have, are primarily due to excess heat that they have inside their body," LaVoie said, "They have excess conditions caused by heat. Hence, they need to eat more raw or cooling foods." Furthermore, LaVoie explains that others have a body personality where digestion is a weak area. If they eat a lot of cold and cleansing food, they get half-digested. She says that accumulates and turns into weight gain. It's called 'phlegm' and 'dampness' in Chinese medicine. Fire And Water Energies LaVoie says a woman can feel hot for two reasons. You have fire and water energies in your body so sometimes when you feel hot, it means you don't have enough water. She says this is called deficiency fire. It tends to come and go in flashes usually worse at night. As a result, you tend to get dryness. Using herbal tonics to treat menopause, results are usually seen after a couple of weeks. But the first big change happens after 3 months. Anyone who starts a tonic herbal program, they first do a foundation combination of herbs for 99 days to cleanse and reset. That's how long the body cycles through the first big change. And then move on to the next phase. Avoiding Diet Pitfalls "You don't want your body to think you're in starvation mode. The primitive part of your brain starts to think something is wrong," LaVoie cautioned. "It takes 6 months for your metabolism to recover from being in that starvation mode." "Your brain chemistry starts to change and your hormones start to change. Your metabolism immediately starts to go down but your cravings go up. This increases your stress hormones," said LaVoie. LaVoie shares what Dr. Mark Hyman said on her blog, as to why diet fails. He says that the average person gains 11 pounds for every diet that they go on. And Dr. Hyman says when they lose weight, they lose muscle, not fat. When they gain weight back, it's all fat. "If you can just keep your metabolism up by not starving and instead of satiating yourself 5 times a day every 3 hours with nutritious food, weight loss is easier," concluded LaVoie. Boosting Metabolism La Voie's program is boosting metabolism naturally. While there are benefits from different kinds of fasting, the Chinese medicine approach to a healthy digestion is to eat regularly. "Insulin and sugar hugely contribute to weight gain. It ties in with the hormone cortisol, your stress hormone," LaVoie said. "If your insulin level is uneven it increases your stress hormone levels and inflammation." Earth Energy Furthermore, she explains that in Chinese medicine, your digestive system is considered your earth energy. It's where you make blood and your watery essence from. If your digestive system is poor, your body can't make blood and your watery essence. In menopause, watery essence controls the fire in our body, moisturizes our body and keeps you calm. "Without watery essence, your mood spikes and fly all over the place," LaVoie said. "Lack of watery essence leads to dry tendons, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel and lack flexibility. Some women can also get dry eyes and mouth during menopause." Our mucous membranes also become dry and that leads to painful intercourse. Women are less likely to have a sex drive if they have all these imbalances. LaVoie also said that recurring urinary tract infection is really unpleasant. Because if your vaginal tissues are dry, they are less plump. So the opening becomes bigger. If they are plump, it's hard for bacteria to get in. Foods To Improve Water Essence LaVoie suggests that having a high amount of fruits and vegetables helps in making sure your water essence is sufficient. Because those foods are cooling and moistening. Pears, seeds, black beans are particularly good to include in your diet. She also said that as you approach menopause, there are estrogen-rich foods which are safe. Flax seeds, organic, fermented and non-GMO soy, as well as sesame seeds, are good. Healthy fats are going to be a great basis. Make sure you're not iron-deficient as well. When I was growing up, my mom took us to Dr. D' Adamo. James D'Adamo. The father of the original creator of the "Eat Right For Your Type" blood type book. Going to him growing up, he had us on this kick. He had us do this every morning---freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and his mysterious protein powder and flaxseed all blended together with our Vitamix. If you don't drink it fast enough, it turns to gel which I personally prefer. I never had a problem with constipation and I always had perfect digestion. LaVoie's Daily Morning Smoothie Here's what LaVoie puts in her warm smoothie which she drinks every morning. You can mix match the bases to give you a different flavor every day: Liquid - Water/ Coconut water/ nut milk/ herbal tea (make sure the liquid base is warm) Herbs - Herb capsules Seeds - flaxseeds/ chia/ sesame / Brazil nuts/ almonds Healthy fats - coconut oil/ egg yolk Spices - cinnamon / ginger/ ginger root (good for digestion) Protein powder - pea protein/whey protein from grass-fed cows Sweet fruit drops (alternative to stevia) Green powder Fruit powder Fruit Vegetables Superfoods Cocoa powder Pinch of salt Yogurt Herbal Program LaVoie noticed that the ones who benefits the most are the ones to take the herbs regularly for 3 months up to 2 years. She thought,'How can I make more people excited about taking their herbs more regularly?' So she created a program. The program is a one-on-one thing that is customized to your health goals and your budget. It is delivered to you every month. You have to use up all the herbs in the box before the next box comes. And then LaVoie usually calls in her clients and re-evaluate their progress after 3 months. There's also a weekly Q & A with her as well as a resource library. The program is very affordable so more women can avail of this program. LaVoie expanded it for menopausal clients. She came up with 16 herbal combinations specifically for menopause. Menopause Basics: What To Eat First of all, LaVoie says to eat a good diet and have a healthy lifestyle. Combine that with herbs and you get amazing results. "Eating the right foods is the way to start. In this program, everything you want to include in your diet to make your hormones balance naturally," said LaVoie. "Any age is ok. It's not a diet. This is just what to include in your diet." She adds, if you want to have coffee or doughnut, it's fine. But you need to balance it with healthy foods. You need to have them often enough. By getting that healthy food in your body, it evens out your hormones, energy, blood sugar and mood. LaVoie's 4-Steps To Hormonal Balance 1. What you include in your diet is more important that what you leave out. 2. By practicing stress management and eating protein and healthy fat often enough throughout the day, you can help balance cortisol and insulin levels, which helps your other hormones immensely. 3. Avoid the worst of the hormone disrupting chemicals. 4. Add adaptogenic superfoods into the diet. Finally, LaVoie advises," Adapt the Chinese medicine into your menopause. It's called the "second spring". If you get some healthy habits in place now, it will stay on track for the rest of your life." Dana LaVoie is the founder and creator of Menopause Basics. Using her 13 years of clinical experience, Dana will provide you with simple, smart, and natural techniques based on the best of Asian Medicine and modern science. My guest on today's podcast is Roger Drummer. Roger is kinda like (pictured above) - you know, the guy that wears the conical, straw Chinese harvester and can generate magical orbs of electricity from his hands. Except, in this case, Roger plays with adaptogenic herbs. He's a Chinese herbal adaptogen formulator, a Certified Nutritionist and NCCAOM Diplomate of Chinese Herbology, holds a U.S. patent for developing a process to grow biologically active, anthocyanin-enriched medicinal mushrooms, and is in my opinion, one of the best-kept secrets in natural medicine and health enhancement. Roger even formulates personalized tonic herbs for thousands of clients, including many notable celebrities (which I ask him about in this podcast episode), and has trained in Shiatsu, Jin Shin Do, Reiki and Kriya Yoga, along with being a former triathlete, runner, cycling enthusiast, husband and father of three girls. I've personally known Roger for over five years, and it's been about three years since I've had him on a podcast (see ""), so I figured that it was high time I had him back, especially since he just released a sugar-free version of my favorite adaptogenic herb complex: . So what is an adaptogen? Adaptogens are a unique category of herbs that facilitate your body’s “adaptation” to stress. They help your body maintain, build or fix its own natural healthy processes, even if you’re exposed to a wide range of external and internal stressors. This means, that, for example, adaptogens can help increase cortisol if cortisol is low, or decrease cortisol if cortisol is high. They can also be used for anything from cognitive performance to enhanced endurance at altitude. Roger is actually the inventor of the exact Chinese adaptogenic blend that holds a special place in my refrigerator: the one I mentioned above called . Here's the label: Tian Chi is a tiny packet that contains an herbal tonic blend of the most renowned adaptogens in the Orient. Every herb used in TianChi is far more pure and potent than typical old, ineffective and often dangerous or nasty-ingredient laced herbs on the market. Very few products contain 100% whole herb extracts. On average the herbal extracts are at least 10:1 yields, meaning it takes 10 pounds of raw herb to produce 1 pound of pure extract. Most manufacturers start with pure yield and cut them to concentrations of 4:1 or 5:1 by adding filler. This produces a cheaper, but less effective extract. Imagine buying a 5:1 extract that originally was 45:1! In stark contrast, the herbal extracts used in TianChi yield 12:1 or greater, and there is even one herb in TianChi that is a 45:1 yield. In other words, you would have to take 9x as much herb from any other source to equal the potency in TianChi. And you would be getting mostly filler, harmful ingredients, and very few results. All of the herbs in TianChi are Non-GMO, Kosher Certified and non-irradiated. They are extracted in purified water and test free of heavy metals. And the creator uses only wild crafted herbs – herbs found in their natural state, free from pesticides and exposure to pollution. You will feel this stuff instantly, guaranteed. Below is a complete list of the pure and potent herbs you’ll find inside each pack of TianChi, with a guarantee of extreme freshness. -Schizandra – the “Five flavor berry” is known as a beauty enhancing herb, one of the main herbs pictured with Lady Maku the Goddess of Beauty. It helps restores proper water metabolism to the cells, detoxifies the liver and lungs, and is an important herb for building lung energy. It tonifies the reproductive system, builds sexual fluids and moistens the skin. Schizandra has been successfully used in China to treat hepatitis. It contains over 20 lignans that bind to carcinogenic substances and safely removes them from the body. A mild adaptogen and powerful anti-oxidant, schizandra is the Chinese equivalent to milk thistle. -Reishi Mushroom – Reishi is known as the “Mushroom of Immortality,” and “Herb of Good Fortune”. It is the most highly revered herb in China for its ability to brighten the mind and spirit. Historically used for boosting immunity, liver detoxing, blood purifying and building, and is known as a potent stress reliever. - -Ashwagandha– Ashwagandha is known as Indian ginseng and one of the most famous of all Ayurvedic herbs. It is a premier adaptogen and has a profound effect on regulating the HPA Axis (hypothalamus/pituitary/adrenal axis) which is the basis of stress response. Although many herbs have been crowded into this category I still maintain that the “Gang of Four”, ashwagandha, rhodiola, reishi and eleuthero, are truly substances that can effectively regulate stress response. -Rhodiola – Rhodiola is known as the “Rose of Heaven” and “Plateau Ginseng.” It is one of the premier adaptogens in the entire world and one of my personal favorites. Regarded as life-prolonging and wisdom enhancing, it can reduce stress response, is blood purifying and is said to balance both creative and cognitive functions of the brain. One of the best herbs for blood oxygenation, it is useful for all endurance sports. Used to treat depression and chronic fatigue and protects against radiation. It is a favorite herb for cosmonauts and mountain climbers. Rhodiola is a “Three Treasure” tonic, it builds Jing, Chi and Shen. -Ecklonia Cava – Ecklonia Cava is a seaweed extract that is the most potent plant based antioxidant known. Because it is partially fat-soluble it crosses the blood brain barrier and is particularly useful in controlling inflammation in the brain. Ecklonia Cava lasts for 12 hours in the body, much more than any other antioxidant. -Eleuthero – This is the herb that launched all of the studies on adaptogenic herbs. Commonly used as an adaptogen in regulating stress response and strengthening adrenal function. It’s famous as a physical endurance and mental enhancing herb used by cosmonauts for its blood oxygen enriching properties. Eleuthero is a great herb for anyone who’s involved in sports or work that demands strength and endurance. It’s more Chi building than Jing, even though I use it primarily for its effect on the kidney-adrenal energy. Eleuthero is seldom sold as a bulk herb as it’s not very nutrient dense. It takes over 40 lbs of good root to make one pound of powdered extract. -Epimedium – Fepimediumamous as “goat sex tea”, epimedium is known throughout the world as herbal aphrodisiac. Lost in its reputation is that it’s also a great herb for increasing circulation in the brain and improving general immunity. Epimedium adds a spark of Yang or fire to the adrenals and has been shown to increase fertility. It is a Jing tonic. -Cistanches – Its Chinese neucommia barkame is “Duzhong” having been named after a doctor who took it and achieved great intellectual success. Eucommia is a premier Jing tonic as it contains a perfect balance of Yin and Yang energy. Its main use is in bone strengthening formulas and can be used for increasing fertility and regulating blood pressure. -Gotu Kola – Gotu Kola is one of the most important rejuvenating herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s used to help revitalize the brain and nerve cells. Gotu Kola is historically used to increase intelligence, memory, longevity and decrease senility. It has been known to support normal immune function and adrenal energy. It is also a powerful blood purifier and is commonly used in Ayurveda to treat chronic skin diseases. Gotu Kola is commonly used by monks and yogis in the Himalayas as an aid to meditation; similar to how Reishi is used in China by the Taoist monks. -Albizzia Flower – This flower is known as the herb for “forgetting cares and sorrows” and “collective happiness flower”. It is an ultimate Shen tonic and is often used improving memory, circulation, and has mood elevating properties. -Astragalus – Astragalus is one of the greatest Chi tonics in all of Chinese Herbology. It’s often used as a ginseng replacement in younger people. Recently it has gain great popularity as an immune building herb. It’s used to help strengthen digestion and lung function, for recovery from illness and as an energy building herb. It is said to build Upright Chi, meaning when the lungs are strong and the breath is deep, it promotes good posture and holds the organs in place. Astragalus is an excellent herb for maintaining the Protective Chi circulating on the surface of the skin helping to ward off seasonal illness. If the cold wind seems to bother your neck it’s often a sign you’re Protective Chi is weak. -Green Tea – One green tea of the most powerful plant-based antioxidants, green tea builds immunity, increases circulation and is a best known for it’s anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown it to be valuable for memory enhancement. Most of green tea’s antioxidant polyphenols are from a class called catechins of which EGCG seems to dominate. It has been described as natures most potent anticancer agent. -Polygonum (Ho Shou Wu) – translates as “Ho’s black hair” one of the main kidney restoratives in Chinese herbology. Legend has it that Ho, an aging lonely hermit living on the edge of town saw a vine intertwined on his walk through the forest. The vines resembled a couple embracing and so he harvested the root, cooked it and consumed the tea. His hair turned back to black from snow white (hence the name) and he actually married and had a son. They both lived to over 100 years old and the herb has since been called Ho’s black hair. -Lycium (Goji) – LyciGojium is a restorative for the liver and kidneys, popular these days as Goji, and one of the 5 most famous herbs in China. Reputed to be the main food of Li Chen Yuang for the first 125 years of his life (he added some ginseng root for the next half of his life). Li died at a banquet in his honor after consuming a heavy dinner (he was a Taoist hermit who lived on herbs and vegetables) causing a national uproar and disgrace for the public official who hosted the event. -Other herbs: Anemarrhena, Licorice, Polygala, Clubmoss, Cocoa Bean Extract, Stevia Leaf, Acerola Cherry, and Raspberry. During my discussion with Roger, you'll discover: -The delicate process via which wildcrafted herbs are actually extracted in China, and exactly how they find their way to the USA... -The important difference between wild and cultivated herbs... -Roger's top herb recommendation for regulating cortisol levels and eliminating adrenal fatigue issues... -The truth about whether resveratrol really does have an anti-aging effect... -How D-Ribose rebuilds your energy stores and ATP levels, and exactly how much you need... -Why so many smart drugs and nootropic compounds use the substance "choline" in their formulations, the form of choline that contains the highest concentrations of actual choline... -Why Roger isn't a fan of using regular stevia mixed with adaptogenic herb extracts, and instead uses a specialized form of stevia root... -The main differences between Tian Chi and Inner Peace...
