In this solo episode, Brandon unpacks a powerful idea that keeps surfacing in his work and personal life: we can't solve problems we don't understand. And we can't understand problems until we stop speaking in generalities and start getting specific. The spark came from a bedtime story with his son—What Do You Do With a Problem? by Kobi Yamada—but the insight goes much deeper. Avoiding the problem makes it grow. Facing it, defining it, and breaking it down is what opens the door to real solutions.Brandon explores how this principle shows up in manufacturing, leadership, strategy, communication, and day-to-day execution. From root cause analysis to structured methods like PDCA and A3, it all comes down to one thing: clear thinking.About Building Better:Building Better with Brandon Bartneck focuses on the people, products, and companies creating a better tomorrow, often in the transportation and manufacturing sectors. The show features real, human conversations exploring what leaders and innovators are doing, why and how they're doing it, and what we can learn from their experiences.Key Themes:You can't solve what you don't understandSpecifics matter more than abstractions when it comes to problem definitionAmbiguity creates unnecessary complexity and anxietySystematic frameworks only work when grounded in clear thinkingManufacturing lessons apply across leadership, strategy, and operationsShow Notes:brandonbartneck.com/buildingbetter/256Listen to the Episode:Apple PodcastsSpotify

Send us a textGovernments are a finicky thing, often maligned, never understood and staffed by a host of individuals who the population generally views as unproductive and inefficient. These views are present whether you are a libertarian or socialist, we the omnipotent citizens believe there is substantial and unchallenged waste and pork barrelling throughout our governance systems. Cue DOGE.There are necessary things in life that we cannot produce or acquire ourselves, a set of collective needs that are the foundation for governments. Roles like national defence, international relations, trade, currency, criminal and civil courts, protection of the environment, etc. We create a social contract with the government: you do the things we want done but are unable to do as individuals, and through taxation we will provide you the resources to execute. A simple agreement. There are three grounding principles in public sector governance. First is that the government works for the people. Second it exists at the pleasure of the people and third is that it is subject to the oversight of the people. Generalities yes, but unwavering rules that form the social contract.I argue that DOGE's gift is the groundwork for a future delivery method to rebuild institutional trust, to demonstrate to the population that their hard earned dollars are being judiciously managed and allocated to appropriate systems that further the wellbeing of society. Imagine if DOGE was mainstream, that an independent auditor could access every system in the government, release all payment information and contracts on a recurring basis to the population. Millions of Americans would have unrestricted access to a database of expenditures, to conduct their own evaluation on the appropriateness of expenditures, in concert with - not replacing - the Ombudsmen and Auditors General. So bemoan the process by which DOGE is operating, the personalities involved, their potential to gain from access to the information and any other reasons you can foster to fight this initiative. DOGE is brilliant, it is a version of government accountability we've all been waiting for. We want to trust and verify. The government needs to create a system that supports the increase in public trust and confidence, and that begins with transparency. Tell us what you're doing and if I have questions, I'll ask. Novel, but revolutionary.Support the showwww.insidemycanoehead.ca

HT2081 - Location Specifics vs Generalities A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to photograph in the famous Ryoan-ji Temple gardens in Kyoto. It was the fulfillment of a life-long dream to photograph there. Curiously enough, that brought me face to face with a fundamental decision: Do I make a project about the Ryoan-ji gardens or use those images to make a project about Japanese gardens in general?

It's Monday, August 26th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus China and North Korea work together to persecute Christians According to a new report, China continues to aid North Korea in its relentless persecution of Christians. The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom recently published its findings on the alarming lack of religious freedom in North Korea and China's role in helping to spur it forward. As North Korea shares a large border with China, many North Koreans flee persecution and travel to China in a desperate attempt to start new lives. It's a calculated risk that many make, hoping to find human kindness from Christian missionaries or others who will help them before authorities catch them. However, for many of these individuals, life remains bleak. Stories of human trafficking and maltreatment of North Korean refugees at the hands of Chinese authorities and organized crime rings are common. According to Open Doors, North Korea is the most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian and China is the 19th. In Matthew 5:10, Jesus said, "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven" Kamala Harris: Long on generalities, short on specifics Last Thursday night, despite the fact that Vice President Kamala Harris had not earned one vote for the Democratic presidential nomination, she said this at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, reports LifeSiteNews.com. HARRIS: “I accept your nomination to be President of the United States.” Her speech was long on philosophy and short on specifics. HARRIS: “Our nation, with this election, has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism, and divisive battles of the past, a chance to chart a new way forward.” She took potshots at former President Donald Trump. HARRIS: “In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious. Just imagine Donald Trump with no guard rails, (boos) and how he would use the immense powers of the presidency of the United States.” Many Trump supporters simply point to his successful four-year record in maintaining peace abroad and lowering taxes at home. Since Kamala Harris is beholden to the abortion giant Planned Parenthood, she objected to any notion of even typical medical reporting and documentation of abortions in each state. HARRIS: “He plans to create a national anti-abortion coordinator and force states to report on women's miscarriages and abortions. (boos) Simply put, they are out of their minds.” And, using the euphemistically misleading reference to “reproductive freedom,” Harris committed to signing a codification of Roe v. Wade into law, report The Washington Stand. HARRIS: “And when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom, as President of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law.” (cheers and applause) Ironically, the Democratic National Convention video feed featured a baby held in the arms of her father, a delegate. Trump reacts to Kamala Harris DNC speech Former President Trump called into FOX News after Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her acceptance speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, reports RealClearPolitics.com. TRUMP: “Why didn't she do the things that she's complaining about? All of these things that she talked about -- we're going to do this, we're going to do that, we're going to do everything. But she didn't do any of it. She could have done it three and a half years ago. She could do it tonight by leaving the auditorium and going to Washington, DC and closing the border. “She doesn't need a bill. I didn't have a bill. I closed the border and created the safest border we've ever had in the history of our country. She was the Border Czar. She presided over the weakest border in the history of our country. She's got four and a half five months left.” Trump criticized Kamala Harris' refusal to address many of the real issues facing America. “She didn't talk about fracking. She didn't talk about crime. She didn't talk about housing. She didn't talk about child trafficking. She didn't talk about interest rates. I mean, the interest rates are now getting close to record rates. People can't do business. Nobody can borrow money. She didn't talk about any of that. “She's a Marxist. She always was. She always will be.” Ben Shapiro: Kamala Harris “owns this economy, this foreign policy” Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro was incredulous. SHAPIRO: “There's nothing there. It's all a lie. She's the Vice President of the United States. Inflation has been at 40-year highs. We're in the midst of two major world conflagrations -- one in the Middle East, one in Ukraine. Her administration has presided over both. “She was the last person in the room when the United States decided, under Joe Biden, to pull out of Afghanistan and leave them billions of dollars in U.S. military hardware, as well as abandoning thousands of U.S. allies to be murdered by the Taliban, as well as abandoning 19 million Afghan women to be stuffed back into bags and back into basements, as well as getting 13 American troops killed at Abbey Gate. “She owns this economy. She owns this foreign policy. She owns the social breakdown over which she has presided. But we're supposed to pretend that she is just brand-spanking new, just fresh out of the package. It's an audacious move. I will grant them that. It is audacious to take a woman who has been a senator from California, and the Vice President of the United States for the last three years, and pretend that she has had nothing to do with anything that is happening in the country right now!” Proverbs 12:22 says, “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are His delight.” Robert F. Kennedy endorsed Trump for President On Friday, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suspended his independent presidential bid and endorsed Donald Trump. KENNEDY: “Three great causes drove me to enter this race in the first place, primarily. And these are the principal causes that persuaded me to leave the Democratic Party and run as an independent, and now to throw my support to President Trump. The causes were free speech, a war in Ukraine, and the war on our children.” Trump offered him a possible Cabinet position, like Abraham Lincoln did of his presidential opponents in the 1860 election -- Attorney General Edward Bates, Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase, and Secretary of State William Seward. KENNEDY: “Now, one of the two candidates has adopted these issues as his own, to the point where he has asked to enlist me in his administration. I'm speaking of course, of Donald Trump. “We talked about Abraham Lincoln's Team of Rivals, that arrangement would allow us to disagree publicly and privately and furiously, if need be on issues over which we differ, while working together on the existential issues upon which we are in concordance.” Robert F. Kennedy Jr., once a proud Democrat in the tradition of his uncle, John F. Kennedy, and his father, Robert F. Kennedy, is now demonstrably disgusted with the Democratic Party. KENNEDY: “The DNC and its media organs engineered a surge of popularity for Vice President Harris based upon nothing, no policies, no interviews, no debates, only smoke and mirrors and balloons. I urge you to take 24 minutes and listen to the entirety of RFK, Jr's speech. It's worth your time. We have it linked through our transcript today at www.TheWorldview.com. Hugh Hewitt: RFK Jr's endorsement of Trump will help him win Appearing last Friday with Brett Baier on the Fox News program Special Report, radio host Hugh Hewitt weighed in on the importance of independent candidate for president Robert F. Kennedy Jr. endorsing former President Donald Trump. HEWITT: “Robert Kennedy Jr. endorsing Donald Trump is a big deal. And I don't care who says what about it. He had 2-5% in every battleground state. Most of that's gonna go to Donald Trump. 60-75% of that. It was a 44,000 vote election in 2020. So that is a very big deal.” Hewitt explained that Kennedy supporters would not find a home in the Kamala Harris campaign. HEWITT: "A lot of the people who are supporting Bobby Kennedy have a great suspicion of the government, not just COVID, but just of the administrative state generally. Those folks are not going to find a home with Kamala Harris, who is the child of big government California, San Francisco, Democrat land. “Although it's only 2 or 3 percent, we're talking about a toss-up. It's like the bank shot at the end of a basketball game. It matters. It matters a lot.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Monday, August 26th, in the year of our Lord 2024. In the midst of all the chaos there's always a silver lining.
If you have ever taken a riding lesson, you've probably experienced how confusing the instructions can be. You're being told to: “fill your back, push with your seat - no not like that, bear down, lift up, lean forward, lean back!” You can be forgiven if you feel like shouting back: “Make up your mind! I can't do both at the same time!” Riding instruction is a challenge because we are attempting to translate into words physical actions. And my starting point, what works well for me probably isn't your starting point. Generalities are useful, but at the end of the day, instruction needs to be a study of one. It works best when it is tailored to each individual. My clinics almost always include opportunities to explore handling and riding details without the horses being present. You slide down lead ropes that are being held by “human horses”. Another rider gives you direct feedback which means your horse is spared some of your learning curve. Various body awareness lessons let handlers make discoveries about how best to organize their own balance. Through this process we can create verbal translations for desired physical changes. Now when the instructor tells you to “fill your back”, you aren't left thinking: “fill it with what!?” Instead you know how to translate this phrase into a meaningful physical response. I originally saw this style of teaching being used in the 1980s by two innovators who helped bring riding instruction and horse training into the modern world. I'm talking about Sally Swift, the developer of Centered Riding and Linda Tellington-Jones, the founder of TTEAM (the Tellington-Jones Equine Awareness Method). In this week's episode we're going to use a look back at their work to introduce a new series on the Feldenkrais™ work. Next week we'll be joined by Anita Schnee. Anita is a Feldenkrais™ Practitioner who is very familiar with my work. She'll be sharing a Feldenkrais™ Awareness Through Movement lesson with us so you will have an opportunity to experience the Feldenkrais™ work directly. This look back at the work of two great innovators gives us a starting point for the conversation that we'll begin in next week's episode.

In this podcast, Dr. Romina Pena asks Dr Steven Wexner various questions on General Complications in Colorectal Surgery. They discuss anastomotic leaks, a difficult problem. Dr. Wexner explains his 4 strategies for mitigating this complication. Also, with the ongoing development of technologies, the doctors talk about their expectations for the future, and how it will affect them on a daily basis, for example, in avoiding multiple crossing staple lines. Another complication discussed is Surgical Site Infections (SSI). Protocols for prevention were discussed in a previous podcast with Dr Antonio de Lacy - therefore, in this one, Dr Wexner how there still are still SSIs, despite all all the knowledge and prevention in the field. They also talk about how bowel preparation might change due to the microbiome. The final complication discussed bleeding. Dr Pena asks Dr Wexner sks about his thoughts on the future, specifically, how new technology such as Artificial Intelligence could prevent bleeding. Finally, she asks him about other methods for clean treatment when facing this stressful complication.
In episode 62 of The Cyber5, we are again joined by Charles Finfrock, CEO and Founder of Black Hand Solutions. Charles was previously the Senior Manager of Insider Threat and Investigations at Tesla and prior to that, he worked as an Operations Officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. We discuss the generalities of cryptocurrency and go into the tactics, techniques, and procedures for conducting cryptocurrency investigations. We also discuss some case studies and what proper outcomes look like for making it more expensive for the adversaries to conduct their operations in this generally unregulated world. Three Key Takeaways: Generalities, Functionalities, and Value of Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency In its simplest form, Cryptocurrency is digital coins or money (Bitcoin and Ethereum being the most popular). It is not run or governed by a central authority, but by a mathematical algorithm that verifies the transactions, controls the supply of the certain coin, and runs on the blockchain. Blockchain, as it pertains to Cryptocurrency, is a ledger that verifies what has been sent and received from an account. It is pseudo-anonymous, it is not anonymous - which is why criminals have been leveraging it so aggressively. When Bitcoin is transacted, the amount sent and received are recorded on the Bitcoin ledger (Blockchain) and associated with a Cryptocurrency wallet address. Criminals think they can hide their identities as a result of not needing a formally validated identity through a central authority. Since Cryptocurrency is not controlled by a central government no one can modify the supply of the particular cryptocurrency. It derives value in the same way the US dollar used to derive value from gold - scarcity. The argument for Bitcoin's value is similar to that of gold—a commodity that shares characteristics with the Cryptocurrency. The cryptocurrency is limited to a quantity of 21 million. Bitcoin's value is a function of this scarcity. 2) Conducting Cryptocurrency Investigations - Decreasing Return on Investment to Criminals When criminals first started using Cryptocurrency in 2012 it was because they thought they could hide their identity. At the time, tools were not available to law enforcement to unmask and attribute actions to persons. That has changed. The two kinds of investigations that clients engage in are reactive and proactive. Reactive are when scams have already been perpetrated against their brand. Proactive are when security teams engage with actors to derive the scam before a significant amount of loss occurs. Legal and technical methods can be deployed to “burn down the infrastructure” to decrease the return on investment for online criminals. Oftentimes an outcome can be to contact a centralized bank or Cryptocurrency exchange (i.e. Coinbase) that is linked to the Cryptocurrency as a means to “cash out” the criminal proceeds, report the fraud, and disrupt the activity, thus increasing the costs to the criminals. 3) Provenance and Repudiation To Understand Truth, Accuracy, and Completeness As with any online crime investigation, investigative techniques identify stylometric attributes of the criminal infrastructure that reveal the provenance of data by the malicious actor. The end provides authorities the ability to repudiate this scheme in the future. Often what we look for are lapses in operational security by the threat actors, which include but are not limited to the following: An actor registered a domain and failed to enable private registration before correcting their mistake. An actor forgot to use their VPN or proxy to connect to their C2 infrastructure and revealed their source IP range. An actor reused certificates on different infrastructure or failed to properly encrypt their C2 traffic. Going a step further, we pivot from technical analysis to open source intelligence (OSINT) to add valuable context to the nature of the threat an organization faces. By exposing network infrastructure and drawing associations using threat information and other technology-enabled OSINT connections, we can determine the motivation and sophistication of the threat. We assess characteristics such as: Content, stylometric attributes, and similarities between criminal persona accounts and true-name accounts. Re-use of content in a spearphish that was similar to content existing elsewhere, such as blog or social media posts. Re-use of usernames or email addresses to register a malicious domain or subscribe to a third-party file server or virtual private server. Photographs that provide traceable location details such as landmarks or geographical attributes. Screenshots, files, or photos used by the actor that leave vital forensic clues revealing real identity or location. Details ascertained through direct engagement with the threat actor.

Dear friend and student: I take pleasure in handing to you now Lesson No. 10. This Lesson is one of the most profound Lessons of the entire course of instruction, and you will do well to follow it very closely. Also-- please remember--the more time you spend alone with these Lessons, and the more time you give to your exercises, the better it will be for you. Remember also that if there is any limit to the Power of the Great God-Law, then I have not been able to find it. Keep quiet at all times. If you keep quiet enough, the God-Law will have an opportunity to work through you and to manifest to you something of its Presence and Power. Be sure and comprehend the part of this Lesson dealing with your "thoughts" for it is quite possible that you will have a different idea of "thoughts" before you finish these studies. Remember this--THE LAW WORKS WHENEVER AND WHEREVER THE CONDITIONS ARE COMPLIED WITH. This LAW is GOD, and it HAS to work because GOD is TRUE. Sincerely your friend and teacher,Frank B Roinson In this Lesson I am going to go over the ground covered by us to date in our studies together, and then I shall show you the principle involved, and show you something of the way the GOD-LAW works in the human life. I want you to pay very special attention, to this Lesson, for you MUST grasp it. You MUST know how to put this infinite GOD-LAW to work in your own individual Life. That is what you want, and that is what I want for you. Generalities are fine. Interesting reading matter is fine. Theories are fine. Many of them are true--but unless you understand the theory, and put it to work in your own life, THEREBY MAKING A FACT OUT OF A THEORY, then your studies will not be as valuable to you as they otherwise would be. The LAW exists, and by this time you know it. You must know it. This mighty Law operates in a spiritual realm. It is a Spiritual Law. Therefore you must not expect to SEE the Law work. You will see the results of its workings, but you will NEVER see it work. Nor can you explain by means of the five senses, just how it worked. Nor can you understand perhaps, the principle involved in its working. But these things you do not need to understand. All you need to know is that the LAW actually does work, and works here and now. That will be sufficient for you to know. For I doubt very much whether or not you care very much HOW this mighty GOD-LAW works, just as long as you know that it DOES WORK. You do not understand how or why electricity gives light. You cannot see electricity. You have never seen electricity. You never will see it. You see its effects. Nor do you, when you need the electric light, stand at the switch and start to try and figure out just how and why the electricity, contained in a bulb and through a wire, can, and does give light. You are not interested in the "whys" and the "hows" at all. You are only interested in GETTING THE LIGHT. So it is in this invisible spiritual realm. You need the spiritual light, and. if you are wise, you will throw the spiritual switch, and the light will come, in much the same way that it does when you throw the electric switch in your home. If you throw the switch and the electric light in your homes does not light--then immediately you say, "WHY---THE POWER IS OFF." And you probably would be correct.... In this episode, Jonathan Van Viegen joins the show to talk about the time and effort it took to start his online coaching and therapy business. Jonathan gives tips on what you'll need to do to start your own online business – most importantly, know your message! Plus, Jonathan reveals his “do's” of online therapy and some common ways to get momentum online. Meet Jonathan Van Viegen Husband, Father of 2, Marriage and Family Therapist, Entrepreneur, and Coach, Jonathan Van Viegen, MA, MFT, CCC is the Founder and CEO of the Online Therapist Academy. Jonathan helps therapists all over the world attract new clients and build thriving online practices so they can do more of what they love to do while serving their clients with passion, integrity, and authenticity. Jonathan built a successful therapy practice in Canada before selling it all to travel full-time with my family. After transforming my struggling online practice into a 6-figure business, I decided to help other therapists do the same. His therapy website is: https://jonathanvanviegen.com/ Getting Online Clients Jonathan would blog regularly and make YouTube videos to get his name out in the open. It took a long time for him to figure out what was going to work. It started to take off and get traction when he was on Instagram. It's about adding value to people's lives and following up with them. Build relationships with your audience and send direct messages. The process is about authenticity and genuine relationships. Create a Message Create a message about what you do, how you do it, and who you do it for. Generalities die, and specificity thrives. Find your passion! What do you love to do, and what type of client do you like to help the most? Craft a message surrounding your nano-niche. You only need a couple of hundred clients per year. There's enough market demand out there that you can be really specific. You'll want to be known as a trusted advisor in your niche. The Do's of Online Therapy DO your research. Make sure you have the proper licenses to practice. DO have a goal in mind. You can be both a coach and a therapist if that's your plan! DO protect your license. Make sure you operate under the necessary authority. DO take action. Put one foot in front of the other. You can pay for mentorship – it will be a journey. DO be consistent. Regardless of how you build your practice, get your momentum. “Success is going from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.” -Winston Churchill Getting Momentum Online It took about twelve months for Jonathan to get momentum. Jonathan learned everything himself using webinars and training. Today, Jonathan has three sales calls. People show up to book calls with Jonathan; he doesn't have to go out and find people. It took a lot of work and effort. If it were too easy, then everyone would do it. Coaching vs. Therapy With therapy, your client will come to you with the content. With coaching, we go to our clients with the content. We are teaching them skills that will help with their daily lives. We aren't supposed to label our clients – why are we labeling how we assist them? Psychotherapy isn't the be-all and end-all intervention for our clients. We can offer people coaching or therapy – you do not need to mix the two. There is no reason that we can't provide both. Today’s episode features gym owner and sports performance coach Mike Kozak and physical therapist, Stephen Laflamme. Mike Kozak is the Owner of SOAR Fitness in Columbus, Ohio. He has trained hundreds of youth athletes as well as a number of current and prospective college and pro athletes. Mike has previously worked as a physical education teacher and youth basketball coach. He frequently hosts “Rewire” clinics with Adarian Barr and is a fervent student of biomechanics and cutting edge sports performance techniques. He has written several articles for Just Fly Sports. Stephen Laflamme attained his clinical Doctorate of Physical Therapy from The Ohio State University in 2016 and graduated from the University of Maine in 2012 with a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science; also attaining his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Certification. Stephen competed twice in the Arnold Weightlifting Championships and qualified for the 2015 National University Championship in weightlifting. Stephen has traveled the country to be a part of the nation's best educational programs and learn from the nation's best professionals. When it comes to things like bilateral and single leg squatting, everyone tends to have their own favorite variations, but how often do we think about exactly why we are performing a front, Zercher or RFE split squat? Are we prescribing these exercises based on what other coaches are utilizing, or based on the individual characteristics and needs of our athletes? In today’s episode Mike and Stephen get into both general and specific principles in catering to athletes optimally in these basic strength movements. We had a great recent episode with Justin Moore in episode 176 talking about “knees in” from a holistic perspective, getting into the hydraulics of the body and the pelvic floor. In this episode we continue in that vein, and get particularly into this dynamic in squatting, landing and jumping, and the differences that exist here, as well as practical training ramifications. Finally, Mike and Stephen talk about training the foot, as well as integrating some concepts learned from Adarian Barr. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points General squatting concepts that make the movement more athletic Squat method difference based on hip structure (eg. anterior vs. posterior tilted) Why you might Zercher squat an athlete vs. front squat, as well as how various positions in RFE split squat bias different elements of movement Approaching athletes who lack hip internal rotation in a sequential manner “Knees in” concepts, timing, and jump training Squatting in respect to “knees out” and hip internal rotation Generalities in ACL prevention training Working with athletes who over-pronate “On my end, higher box safety bar squats seem to be the one that works the best for the majority of my population” Kozak “We’ve been big on the heels elevated ramps (while squatting)… putting them up on that buys them some more room to sit down” Kozak “In order to squat effectively, you need to be able to posteriorly rotate the pelvis, and the hamstrings are a really important muscle to be able to do that; by squatting to a high box, the hamstrings always stay within the range of motion where they can contribute to hip extension” Laflamme “A split squat with my left foot in front and a kettlebell in my right hand would bias internal rotation of my front leg. A kettlebell in my left hand would bias external rotation” Laflamme “If someone is really spongy when they land and can’t get off the ground quick, those are the people you see with the sway back posture, and it looks like the hips are tipped backwards. By bringing them forward and getting a little more trunk inclination it helps unweight the pelvic fl...

"Most mother-in-laws are horrible". Have you ever heard someone say a phrase like that? Or: "Martial arts is very brutal." Or "Videogames make kids violent". I have come to the conclusion this is a subject that really plays a big role in daily life for each of us. Whenever we listen to people we will catch lots of generalities that are thrown into the conversation. Maybe we do it ourselves, too. Let's explore that subject a little. http://conquering-life.com/

The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
This is the start of a new series on cognitive biases. To present the series in an organized fashion I found around 200 biases and then categorized them in a way that would be relevant to what we do here on The Brainy Business. I came up with eight categories, and I will go over each bias in the category in a pretty quick succession. A cognitive bias is an error in the way humans think. It's a way that is often not in our best interest. These biases aren't random. They are predictable and that is the basis for behavioral economics. This week we are talking about those personal biases that lead us all to believe we are uniquely talented and awesome…and generally better than everyone else. As you listen to the list, think about yourself – how have you experienced this in your own life? And also think about other people – have you seen this in others? How could you use that bias in the way you message to customers or attract people to your business? Show Notes [10:48] EVERYONE IS UNIQUELY TALENTED Optimism bias: Humans assume they are more likely to have a positive outcome in life compared to other people. [11:28] You want to look at ways you can use optimism bias to your advantage when setting big goals, but your day to day tasks should be more realistic and less than you think you can accomplish. [11:32] Planning fallacy is the tendency to underestimate how long it will take us to complete a task. [12:30] Do you ever find yourself with a list of 10 things you “need to do” today and you only end up getting through two? Understanding planning fallacy can help you do better in setting more realistic tasks (and therefore being happier - and more productive). [12:48] Naive realism is the belief that unlike other people, we see reality exactly as it is. [14:21] Try to be open to the perspectives of others. Your curse of knowledge will make this hard because you know a lot about your area of expertise. [15:01] In order to be successful in life and business, you need to be able to understand the perspectives of other people and how they differ from yours. [16:09] The false consensus effect is our tendency to overestimate how much other people agree with us. [17:41] Illusion of asymmetric insight this is when people think they understand their peers better than those same people understand them. [18:15] If you assume that everyone thinks you don’t understand them as well as they understand you, it could be beneficial to ask them questions that help them explain more about themselves to you. [18:49] Illusion of transparency: people also overestimate their ability to know others, and the ability for others to know them. [19:56] False uniqueness bias is when everybody thinks of themselves and their business as a special snowflake with unique problems unlike anyone else's. [21:17] When you are communicating what you offer, use the Forer effect (also known as the Barnum effect) to your advantage. This could also be seen as the astrology effect or the fortune telling phenomenon: people tend to think statements that are vague and general enough to relate to a large group of people are highly accurate and “exactly them!” [22:42] Generalities can inspire people to take action, so keep that in mind when creating your messaging. [22:57] Illusion of control, which is your tendency to overestimate the influence you have over external events. [25:33] Egocentric bias is when you feel like you do more than the other person and because of our naive cynicism, we also expect other people to have this bias more than ourselves. [26:47] It's important to praise others for their contributions without diminishing your own efforts. [27:28] Social comparison bias: Because of self-preservation and wanting to stand out and be the best, we tend to favor potential candidates whose strengths are not in direct competition with our own. [27:50] Self serving bias, where we want to claim more responsibility for successes than the things we might have failed on. We want all the glory and none of the blame. [28:23] The spotlight effect is the tendency to overestimate the amount that others are focused on our appearance or the things we say or do. [28:53] Because everyone else is the center of their own universe as well, you can relax a little. [30:07] Because of the 3rd person effect everyone believes they're less likely to be influenced by mass marketing than other people. [30:40] A bias blind spot is where we see ourselves as less biased than others and tend to be better at spotting these cognitive biases in others than in ourselves. [31:23] Illusory superiority is where we overestimate our own desirable qualities and underestimate our undesirable qualities. [32:14] Restraint bias: We all think we have more restraint than others and generally overestimating our ability to resist temptations. [32:53] Trait ascription bias: We think others have very predictable personalities, moods and behaviors (that they are more one dimensional) and that we personally are much more dynamic. [35:14] The overconfidence effect: for certain types of questions, people will say they are 99% certain in their answers…but they are actually wrong 40% of the time. [36:24] Pro innovation bias, which is essentially having massive optimism about an invention or innovation. [37:48] REVISING IN HINDSIGHT [38:06] Post purchase rationalization is when people buy on emotion and then persuade themselves it was the right decision. [38:55] Choice supportive bias is where we say retroactively are choices were more informed than they actually were. [39:22] Illusion of external agency, which means we think our personal preferences are based on insightful influences and benevolence. [40:21] Illusion of validity, where we believe our judgments and choices were accurate. [40:43] Conservatism belief revision you would not sufficiently revise your belief. [41:13] Continued influence effect, where you continue to believe misinformation even after it has been corrected. Thanks for listening. Don’t forget to subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Android. Would you rather have someone be blunt with you or someone who tells you what you want to hear? Well this is a story about how a prospect ended the conversation early because he was very clear about what he wanted in order to make a deal happen with my systems and process virtual assistant agency. When you are selling anything, the more clear your customers are the better... even if it hurts your feelings.
Hello, listeners and patrons alike. We come to you with some exciting news: We are changing the Patreon around! (http://patreon.com/duckfeedtv) It feels like we just did this, but the last major change was back toward the beginning of 2017. We’re trying to constantly observe what’s happening with the network and learn what to do better. That means making changes like this from time to time. We’re also aiming to never shake things up in a way that is too disruptive to you, the listener. We want to give more (or at least focus up and give better). So we put a lot of thought and consideration into making sure these changes either solve problems or help us achieve goals. Here’s the summary of what we’re planning, and you can find the details below. In order to grow the network, give patrons more, and cover rising costs, we plan to: Bring back Bonfireside Chat as a Patreon show. Give Patrons a whole episode of Watch Out for Fireballs! Move from theme months to covering big-name games more frequently. Change WOFF! Listener Response episodes to WOFF! Dispatch, make it more interactive, and have broader topic discussions. Make Adaptation Decay a monthly show. We are getting rid of the content store, and making premium episodes available on Patreon in perpetuity. We are phasing out the promise of physical goods, and sending out an “I’m Sorry!” package to people who never got theirs. In general, we are simplifying the Patreon drastically, while offering more at each tier. So without further preamble, let’s get into more detail. We want to grow. We want to grow in both listenership, patronage, and income. We are proud of the work that we do, and never want to stagnate in any of the aforementioned areas. Growth requires change. We want to give patrons more. The best way to keep listeners and members around is to always try to give more (or give better). This is also the best way to bring new people in. We are grateful to our patrons, past and present, and we want to make sure we’re giving them stuff they want. We want to meet rising costs. There are costs associated with doing this at the professional level. Traveling to live shows is expensive. Hosting, web services, applications, and equipment are expensive. Being self-employed is expensive (both Gary and I do this full time and need to cover things like health insurance). And since we’re covering more new games, we’re spending more on games! This is not a hobby for us, we’re committed to doing this full time as our main means of support, and this means keeping up with costs. People want Bonfireside Chat. And we want to give it to them. We also want to play to our strengths as a network whose bread and butter is games club content. We put Bonfireside Chat to bed when it felt like it was the right thing to do. We stuck with our guns for a long time. But with Sekiro on the horizon, and some damn-fine Soulslikes already here, it feels right to take the show out of cold storage. So we are bringing back Bonfireside Chat as a Patreon show, with a slightly different format. Listen to Bonfireside Chat 2.0 Episode 0 on the feed to learn more. Our first game is the Soulslike shooter Immortal Unchained! We want to value WOFF! appropriately. Watch Out for Fireballs! is the network’s flagship show. It also takes a lot of time to produce. We play through the entire game (whether it’s 1 hour or 100), research the games, write outlines that total in the thousands of words, record for hours, and edit. In looking at how to make this tenable in the long run, we have decided to make one episode of WOFF! per month premium. This does two things: It makes the Patreon more valuable for our members, and it incentivizes more membership. But don’t panic! When an episode goes premium, we will include a good portion of it on the public feed (up through the Generalities). So you still get something each week, it’s just that the play-by-play goes to members. NOTE 1: This won’t go into effect for January. We already announced those games, and we don’t want to revoke access to something anyone was excited for. NOTE 2: We will still have multi-part episodes, but we will never put a whole episode (Part 2, 3, or 4) behind a paywall. Only single episodes will get this treatment. WOFF! Theme Months are going away. This was a very fun idea. But it was also hell to plan for, in addition to other WOFF-based pattern incentives. So we feel like it has run its course. We want to exercise more control over the games we pick for WOFF! so we can pace out the year and cover exciting stuff. Anyone who has paid for a WOFF Theme Month will still get their topics covered, but after that hopper is exhausted the theme months will go away. We want the WOFF! Listener Response episodes to be more interesting. Right now, not a lot of folks listen to the letters episodes on WOFF. Additionally, not a lot of people listen to the behind-the-scenes episodes of DuckTRAX, and we don’t get very many prompts/responses. SO! We’re getting rid of DuckTRAX and changing the listener response episodes to WOFF! Dispatch. So the last episode of WOFF! for each month will contain responses about the games from that month, prompts and questions from the Patrons, and a segment that is a longer-form discussion about a particular topic. These will be fun experiments, and we hope you’re down for them. We want to do more Adaptation Decay Adaptation Decay is our premium show about how video games are adapted into other media, and it’s a fun show to do. Right now we have it on a very strange “8 times a year” rhythm. With DuckTRAX going away, we are taking Adaptation Decay monthly! The content store is complicated, and having content time-gated on Patreon is confusing and dissatisfying. So we’re not going to fuck with that anymore. If you back at $10 per month, you’ll get access to the firehose of content. Every premium WOFF, Bonfireside Chat Exquisite Suffering, Adaptation Decay, DuckTRAX, Try This… and whatever other one-off Duckfeed Presents stuff we make for you. We appreciate people who support us, and we want you to get your money’s worth, both in terms of the backlog and future value. We really biffed the physical goods. Under the old scheme, we offered physical goods packs and a DuckZine. We failed to deliver those, because we overestimated our ability to meet that logistical challenge. So the new scheme has no physical rewards. To say sorry for our past neglect of this promise, we will be sending out one large package to everyone who was qualified for those rewards (you should have already received an email about this). We are sorry that we disappointed you on this front, and there’s really no excuse. We hope the I’m Sorry package helps. We’re honoring our previous commitments. People who paid for theme months will get those theme months covered. If you have a WOFF! game demand or Abject Suffering demand in the hopper, that’s still there. The current Patreon scheme is complicated and we want to simplify it. We have a lot of reward tiers and stretch goals. Some of the reward tiers require backing for several months, which is confusing. In general, we let the Patreon grow tangled and weird, and we want to prune it down so it’s easier for you to pick the right tier. So, we’ve got less of everything, but what remains should be even more valuable. We are reducing the number of new shows on the horizon, because we are already stretched pretty thin. But there’s still stuff to aim for, and we hope this makes the Patreon much more valuable and friendly.

FreeBSD internship learnings, exciting developments coming to FreeBSD, running FreeNAS on DigitalOcean, Network Manager control for OpenBSD, OpenZFS User Conference Videos are here and batch editing files with ed. Headlines What I learned during my FreeBSD intership Hi, my name is Mitchell Horne. I am a computer engineering student at the University of Waterloo, currently in my third year of studies, and fortunate to have been one of the FreeBSD Foundation’s co-op students this past term (January to April). During this time I worked under Ed Maste, in the Foundation’s small Kitchener office, along with another co-op student Arshan Khanifar. My term has now come to an end, and so I’d like to share a little bit about my experience as a newcomer to FreeBSD and open-source development. I’ll begin with some quick background — and a small admission of guilt. I have been an open-source user for a large part of my life. When I was a teenager I started playing around with Linux, which opened my eyes to the wider world of free software. Other than some small contributions to GNOME, my experience has been mostly as an end user; however, the value of these projects and the open-source philosophy was not lost on me, and is most of what motivated my interest in this position. Before beginning this term I had no personal experience with any of the BSDs, although I knew of their existence and was extremely excited to receive the position. I knew it would be a great opportunity for growth, but I must confess that my naivety about FreeBSD caused me to make the silent assumption that this would be a form of compromise — a stepping stone that would eventually allow me to work on open-source projects that are somehow “greater” or more “legitimate”. After four months spent immersed in this project I have learned how it operates, witnessed its community, and learned about its history. I am happy to admit that I was completely mistaken. Saying it now seems obvious, but FreeBSD is a project with its own distinct uses, goals, and identity. For many there may exist no greater opportunity than to work on FreeBSD full time, and with what I know now I would have a hard time coming up with a project that is more “legitimate”. What I Liked In all cases, the work I submitted this term was reviewed by no less than two people before being committed. The feedback and criticism I received was always both constructive and to the point, and it commented on everything from high-level ideas to small style issues. I appreciate having these thorough reviews in place, since I believe it ultimately encourages people to accept only their best work. It is indicative of the high quality that already exists within every aspect of this project, and this commitment to quality is something that should continue to be honored as a core value. As I’ve discovered in some of my previous work terms, it is all too easy cut corners in the name of a deadline or changing priorities, but the fact that FreeBSD doesn’t need to make these types of compromises is a testament to the power of free software. It’s a small thing, but the quality and completeness of the FreeBSD documentation was hugely helpful throughout my term. Everything you might need to know about utilities, library functions, the kernel, and more can be found in a man page; and the handbook is a great resource as both an introduction to the operating system and a reference. I only wish I had taken some time earlier in the term to explore the different documents more thoroughly, as they cover a wide range of interesting and useful topics. The effort people put into writing and maintaining FreeBSD’s documentation is easy to overlook, but its value cannot be overstated. What I Learned Although there was a lot I enjoyed, there were certainly many struggles I faced throughout the term, and lessons to be learned from them. I expect that some of issues I faced may be specific to FreeBSD, while others may be common to open-source projects in general. I don’t have enough experience to speculate on which is which, so I will leave this to the reader. The first lesson can be summed up simply: you have to advocate for your own work. FreeBSD is made up in large part by volunteer efforts, and in many cases there is more work to go around than people available to do it. A consequence of this is that there will not be anybody there to check up on you. Even in my position where I actually had a direct supervisor, Ed often had his plate full with so many other things that the responsibility to find someone to look at my work fell to me. Admittedly, a couple of smaller changes I worked on got left behind or stuck in review simply because there wasn’t a clear person/place to reach out to. I think this is both a barrier of entry to FreeBSD and a mental hurdle that I needed to get over. If there’s a change you want to see included or reviewed, then you may have to be the one to push for it, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Perhaps this process should be easier for newcomers or infrequent contributors (the disconnect between Bugzilla and Phabricator definitely leaves a lot to be desired), but we also have to be aware that this simply isn’t the reality right now. Getting your work looked at may require a little bit more self-motivation, but I’d argue that there are much worse problems a project like FreeBSD could have than this. I understand this a lot better now, but it is still something I struggle with. I’m not naturally the type of person who easily connects with others or asks for help, so I see this as an area for future growth rather than simply a struggle I encountered and overcame over the course of this work term. Certainly it is an important skill to understand the value of your own work, and equally important is the ability to communicate that value to others. I also learned the importance of starting small. My first week or two on the job mainly involved getting set up and comfortable with the workflow. After this initial stage, I began exploring the project and found myself overwhelmed by its scale. With so many possible areas to investigate, and so much work happening at once, I felt quite lost on where to begin. Many of the potential projects I found were too far beyond my experience level, and most small bugs were picked up and fixed quickly by more experienced contributors before I could even get to them. It’s easy to make the mistake that FreeBSD is made up solely of a few rock-star committers that do everything. This is how it appears at face-value, as reading through commits, bug reports, and mailing lists yields a few of the same names over and over. The reality is that just as important are the hundreds of users and infrequent contributors who take the time to submit bug reports, patches, or feedback. Even though there are some people who would fall under the umbrella of a rock-star committer, they didn’t get there overnight. Rather, they have built their skills and knowledge through many years of involvement in FreeBSD and similar projects. As a student coming into this project and having high expectations of myself, it was easy to set the bar too high by comparing myself against those big committers, and feel that my work was insignificant, inadequate, and simply too infrequent. In reality, there is no reason I should have felt this way. In a way, this comparison is disrespectful to those who have reached this level, as it took them a long time to get there, and it’s a humbling reminder that any skill worth learning requires time, patience, and dedication. It is easy to focus on an end product and simply wish to be there, but in order to be truly successful one must start small, and find satisfaction in the struggle of learning something new. I take pride in the many small successes I’ve had throughout my term here, and appreciate the fact that my journey into FreeBSD and open-source software is only just beginning. Closing Thoughts I would like to close with some brief thank-you’s. First, to everyone at the Foundation for being so helpful, and allowing this position to exist in the first place. I am extremely grateful to have been given this unique opportunity to learn about and give back to the open-source world. I’d also like to thank my office mates; Ed: for being an excellent mentor, who offered an endless wealth of knowledge and willingness to share it. My classmate and fellow intern Arshan: for giving me a sense of camaraderie and the comforting reminder that at many moments he was as lost as I was. Finally, a quick thanks to everyone else I crossed paths with who offered reviews and advice. I appreciate your help and look forward to working with you all further. I am walking away from this co-op with a much greater appreciation for this project, and have made it a goal to remain involved in some capacity. I feel that I’ve gained a little bit of a wider perspective on my place in the software world, something I never really got from my previous co-ops. Whether it ends up being just a stepping stone, or the beginning of much larger involvement, I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. News Roundup Network Manager Control for OpenBSD (Updated) Generalities I just remind the scope of this small tool: allow you to pre-define several cable or wifi connections let nmctl to connect automatically to the first available one allow you to easily switch from one network connection to an other one create openbox dynamic menus Enhancements in this version This is my second development version: 0.2. I've added performed several changes in the code: code style cleanup, to better match the python recommendations adapt the tool to allow to connect to an Open-wifi having blancs in the name. This happens in some hotels implement a loop as work-around concerning the arp table issue. The source code is still on the git of Sourceforge.net. You can see the files here And you can download the last version here Feedbacks after few months I'm using this script on my OpenBSD laptop since about 5 months. In my case, I'm mainly using the openbox menus and the --restart option. The Openbox menus The openbox menus are working fine. As explain in my previous blog, I just have to create 2 entries in my openbox's menu.xml file, and all the rest comes automatically from nmctl itself thanks to the --list and --scan options. I've not changed this part of nmctl since it works as expected (for me :-) ). The --restart option Because I'm very lazy, and because OpenBSD is very simple to use, I've added the command "nmctl --restart" in the /etc/apm/resume script. Thanks to apmd, this script will be used each time I'm opening the lid of my laptop. In other words, each time I'll opening my laptop, nmctl will search the optimum network connection for me. But I had several issues in this scenario. Most of the problems were linked to the arp table issues. Indeed, in some circumstances, my proxy IP address was associated to the cable interface instead of the wifi interface or vice-versa. As consequence I'm not able to connect to the proxy, thus not able to connect to internet. So the ping to google (final test nmctl perform) is failing. Knowing that anyhow, I'm doing a full arp cleanup, it's not clear for me from where this problem come from. To solve this situation I've implemented a "retry" concept. In other words, before testing an another possible network connection (as listed in my /etc/nmctl.conf file), the script try 3x the current connection's parameters. If you want to reduce or increase this figures, you can do it via the --retry parameter. Results of my expertise with this small tool Where ever I'm located, my laptop is now connecting automatically to the wifi / cable connection previously identified for this location. Currently I have 3 places where I have Wifi credentials and 2 offices places where I just have to plug the network cable. Since the /etc/apm/resume scripts is triggered when I open the lid of the laptop, I just have to make sure that I plug the RJ45 before opening the laptop. For the rest, I do not have to type any commands, OpenBSD do all what is needed ;-). I hotels or restaurants, I can just connect to the Open Wifi thanks to the openbox menu created by "nmctl --scan". Next steps Documentation The tool is missing lot of documentation. I appreciate OpenBSD for his great documentation, so I have to do the same. I plan to write a README and a man page at first instances. But since my laziness, I will do it as soon as I see some interest for this tool from other persons. Tests I now have to travel and see how to see the script react on the different situations. Interested persons are welcome to share with me the outcome of their tests. I'm curious how it work. OpenBSD 6.3 on EdgeRouter Lite simple upgrade method TL;DR OpenBSD 6.3 oceton upgrade instructions may not factor that your ERL is running from the USB key they want wiped with the miniroot63.fs image loaded on. Place the bsd.rd for OpenBSD 6.3 on the sd0i slice used by U-Boot for the kernel, and then edit the boot command to run it. a tiny upgrade The OpenBSD documentation is comprehensive, but there might be rough corners around what are probably edge cases in their user base. People running EdgeRouter Lite hardware for example, who are looking to upgrade from 6.2 to 6.3. The documentation, which gave us everything we needed last time, left me with some questions about how to upgrade. In INSTALL.octeon, the Upgrading section does mention: The best solution, whenever possible, is to backup your data and reinstall from scratch I had to check if that directive existed in the documentation for other architectures. I wondered if oceton users were getting singled out. We were not. Just simplicity and pragmatism. Reading on: To upgrade OpenBSD 6.3 from a previous version, start with the general instructions in the section "Installing OpenBSD". But that section requires us to boot off of TFTP or NFS. Which I don’t want to do right now. Could also use a USB stick with the miniroot63.fs installed on it. But as the ERL only has a single USB port, we would have to remove the USB stick with the current install on it. Once we get to the Install or Upgrade prompt, there would be nothing to upgrade. Well, I guess I could use a USB hub. But the ERL’s USB port is inside the case. With all the screws in. And the tools are neatly put away. And I’d have to pull the USB hub from behind a workstation. And it’s two am. And I cleaned up the cabling in the lab this past weekend. Looks nice for once. So I don’t want to futz around with all that. There must be an almost imperceptibly easier way of doing this than setting up a TFTP server or NFS share in five minutes… Right? iXsystems Boise Technology Show 2018 Recap OpenZFS User Conference Slides & Videos Thank you ZFS ZSTD Compression Pool Layout Considerations ZFS Releases Helping Developers Help You ZFS and MySQL on Linux Micron OSNEXUS ZFS at Six Feet Up Flexible Disk Use with OpenZFS Batch editing files with ed what’s ‘ed’? ed is this sort of terrifying text editor. A typical interaction with ed for me in the past has gone something like this: $ ed help ? h ? asdfasdfasdfsadf ? Basically if you do something wrong, ed will just print out a single, unhelpful, ?. So I’d basically dismissed ed as an old arcane Unix tool that had no practical use today. vi is a successor to ed, except with a visual interface instead of this ? surprise: Ed is actually sort of cool and fun So if Ed is a terrifying thing that only prints ? at you, why am I writing a blog post about it? WELL!!!! On April 1 this year, Michael W Lucas published a new short book called Ed Mastery. I like his writing, and even though it was sort of an april fool’s joke, it was ALSO a legitimate actual real book, and so I bought it and read it to see if his claims that Ed is actually interesting were true. And it was so cool!!!! I found out: how to get Ed to give you better error messages than just ? that the name of the grep command comes from ed syntax (g/re/p) the basics of how to navigate and edit files using ed All of that was a cool Unix history lesson, but did not make me want to actually use Ed in real life. But!!! The other neat thing about Ed (that did make me want to use it!) is that any Ed session corresponds to a script that you can replay! So if I know Ed, then I can use Ed basically as a way to easily apply vim-macro-like programs to my files. Sources of Knowledge- No replacement for independent thinking - Must know at least basics already ON YOUR OWN to vet potential sources- Respect for science by source: good- Lack of axe to grind by source: good (conspiracy theory leanings a good tell here)- Experience doing/coaching is good... esp if you're looking for real world tips- Combine all for best results 2.) Tools to Make Decisions- Calm state of mind, let truth reveal itself vs. searching for it actively in a place you think it will be- Open minded to all possibilities- Use accumulated knowledge and logical inference to frame various choices/alternate views as probabilities (knowledge of basic bio, past literature on new GMO issues for example)- Giving the least probable the most examination - Always circle back to strengthen your knowledge/inference base 3.) Giving Advice- Don't give advice in areas of cursory familiarity unless you MUST. Stick to what you know best. (Forum anti estrogen example)- Unsolicited advice: usually highly ineffective - Generalities ok to give to most anyone, specifics require the kind of insight ONLY A PERSONAL/COACHING relationship can give- If you're not sure you know the issue very well, don't feel like you need to chime in.
