Send us a textWendy Dixon-Jewitt is on a mission. As the founder and CEO of Brainstorm Soft Skill Solutions, she strongly advocates for creating safer and more sustainable nursing workplaces, and her passion is unmistakable. Early in her career, Wendy encountered a toxic nursing culture, which she described as "100% responsibility with zero authority to get the necessary tasks done." It's alarming to think about how many nurses have left the profession due to such circumstances. But Wendy did not walk away; instead, she pivoted her focus toward developing her soft skills.Wendy describes soft skills as “everything that happens in the space between people.” She believes one-on-one interactions are where we will transform healthcare. It's about nurses showing up. And it's not easy to show up, to speak up. After all, nurses are as she believes, “dealing with hierarchies, power infrastructures, and oppression and they are taking a risk every time they open their mouth.” Wendy knows some of her views are controversial but maybe that's what the nursing profession needs; a little controversy to shake things up. Through her leadership and training, she is determined to help us find our voice. Wendy developed Universal Precautions for Emotional Dysregulation—a proactive, skills-based framework for reducing the risk of verbal abuse, emotional harm, and professional burnout. Brilliant. We're talking de-escalation, boundary-setting, and building team resilience. And unlike myself, Wendy doesn't believe resilience is a four-letter word and I might be coming around to her point of view.In the five-minute snippet: sounds like her hometown is straight out of X-files. The Power of Empathy in Leadership with Doug NollIn this episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, host Josh Elledge speaks with Douglas E. Noll, owner of DougNoll.com, emotional intelligence expert, mediator, and award-winning author. Doug brings decades of insight into how empathy—often misunderstood as weakness—is in fact the foundation of strong, effective leadership. With a background that spans law, neuroscience, and international peacebuilding, Doug shares transformative tools for emotionally intelligent leadership in today's complex world.Leading with Empathy: Why Emotions Matter More Than EverDoug opens by dismantling the myth that emotions have no place in leadership. In reality, empathy is one of the oldest and most powerful human tools for communication and connection—far older than language itself. For over a million years, humans relied on nonverbal emotional signals to form social bonds and navigate conflict. That legacy is still with us today.Through his work, Doug has developed affect labeling, a neuroscience-backed technique that helps leaders de-escalate tension by naming and reflecting others' emotions. This method calms the brain's emotional centers, creating space for rational thought, trust, and clarity. Whether you're managing a team, facing conflict, or navigating change, Doug's approach makes emotional intelligence both teachable and tactical.Doug also warns leaders about relying on “gut instinct” during high-stakes decision-making. Gut feelings are often just pattern recognition—and without emotional clarity, those patterns can be misleading. The best leaders, Doug argues, are emotionally attuned, vulnerable when needed, and skilled in human behavior—not authoritarian by default.About Doug NollDouglas E. Noll, JD, MA, is the owner of DougNoll.com. After leaving a successful 22-year career as a trial lawyer, Doug became a full-time peacemaker. He is an award-winning author, mediator, teacher, and trainer whose work ranges from international conflict resolution to helping life-sentenced inmates become mediators inside maximum-security prisons. He is the co-founder of the Prison of Peace project and the creator of the Noll Affect Labeling System. His fourth book, De-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less, has been published in multiple languages and is now in its second printing.About DougNoll.comDougNoll.com is the home of Doug's consulting, speaking, and training work. He helps leaders, educators, mediators, and organizations master emotional intelligence to build trust, resolve conflict, and foster stronger relationships in any setting. Through keynotes, workshops, online resources, and his best-selling books, Doug equips people with science-based strategies to lead with clarity and connection.Links Mentioned in this Episode:DougNoll.comDoug Noll on LinkedInDe-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or LessPrison of Peace ProjectEpisode Highlights:Why empathy is one of the oldest human leadership traitsThe neuroscience behind affect labeling and how it calms conflictHow military leadership prioritizes...

In this episode of Tactical Living, we delve into the critical skill of de-escalation (Amazon Associate) for first responders. Effectively managing high-tension situations not only ensures the safety of all involved but also fosters trust within the community. We explore five practical de-escalation techniques, providing real-world examples to illustrate their application. For a comprehensive guide on de-escalation techniques, consider reading De-Escalate: How to Calm an Angry Person in 90 Seconds or Less by Douglas E. Noll. This book offers practical strategies grounded in neuroscience to effectively manage and defuse tense situations. Active Listening: Explanation: Demonstrating genuine attention to the individual's concerns can defuse tension. Example: An officer responds to a domestic dispute and allows each party to express their grievances without interruption, acknowledging their feelings and summarizing their points to show understanding. Empathy and Validation: Explanation: Recognizing and affirming the individual's emotions can reduce hostility. Example: During a protest, an officer approaches a distressed demonstrator, saying, I see you're upset about the situation; it's important to have your voice heard. Calm and Non-Threatening Demeanor: Explanation: Maintaining a composed and approachable presence can prevent escalation. Example: In a heated argument at a public event, an officer keeps a relaxed posture, speaks softly, and avoids aggressive body language, helping to soothe the agitated individuals. Clear and Respectful Communication: Explanation: Using simple, respectful language ensures clarity and reduces misunderstandings. Example: When directing a non-compliant individual, an officer calmly states, Sir, for everyone's safety, please step back onto the sidewalk. Offering Choices and Alternatives: Explanation: Providing options empowers individuals and can lead to voluntary compliance. Example: Facing a trespasser refusing to leave, an officer offers, You can exit through the front door, or I can escort you out through the side—it's your choice. Mastering de-escalation techniques is essential for first responders aiming to resolve conflicts peacefully and maintain public trust. By actively listening, showing empathy, maintaining a calm demeanor, communicating clearly, and offering choices, officers can effectively manage volatile situations. Implementing these strategies not only enhances safety but also strengthens community relations.   Secure your firearm with my buy one get one free affiliate code from STOPBOX http://stopboxusa.com/LEOWARRIORS All viewpoints discussed in this episode are for entertainment purposes only and are simply our opinions based off of our own experience, background and education. Conflict is inevitable, but how we handle it can either bring resolution or escalate tensions. In this insightful conversation, they introduce the "Slow, Soft, and Small" approach to handling conflict with emotional intelligence, ensuring that you lead with calm and composure. From practical body language tips to adopting the fruits of the Spirit in your responses, this episode equips you with tools to navigate and resolve conflict in ministry contexts.   Key topics covered include: The biological and psychological factors that influence conflict escalation. Practical tips on managing conflict through body language: slowing down, softening your tone, and minimizing physical presence. The role of emotional intelligence in ministry leadership and conflict resolution. How to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively when facing conflict. The importance of modeling peaceable practices to de-escalate situations and promote unity in the church.   Scripture References: James 1:20 - "For the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God." Galatians 5:22-23 - "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."   Key Quote:"Slow down your words, lower your volume, and be intentional in your response. It's not about winning the conflict, but about finding resolution and unity."   Takeaway:Conflict is a natural part of ministry, but how you respond can either fuel the fire or bring peace. On this episode of The Fresh Start Family Show, Wendy chats with the funny and insightful Kirk Martin, founder of Celebrate Calm and host of the Calm Parenting podcast.  They explore 3 tools we can use to help de-escalate situations with our strong-willed kids when they're upset that are effective and actually create closeness when parenting a strong-willed kiddo: Self-Regulation: We must control our own emotions first before we address the child. The quickest way to change your child's behavior is to first control your own. Movement: Motion changes emotion. Sometimes talking makes kids more upset. Use movement to help calm an upset child. Connection: Relationships change behavior. Staying connected, especially during discipline creates trust & safety, which kids NEED in order to learn effective self-regulation.  Strong-willed kids are incredible, AND they can often be misunderstood. This episode gives us a fresh and empowered perspective on these kiddos and how to support their big feelings. You can calm that angry person in 90 seconds or less Treat anger as a normal emotional response that you can control Episode 199 (Doug is based in California and this is a repeat of episode 117) Why you need to listen to this episode now. If you ever need to face angry people and want a better way to manage the situation, listen to this conversation to save the situation and relationship. If you ever feel out of control from your own anger, examine this perspective to maintain your dignity while deescalating the situation. ----- George Torok and special guest, Doug Knoll - an attorney turned peacemaker - explore the nuanced world of anger and its impact on both personal and professional environments. Focusing on de-escalation strategies and the key role of active listening, this podcast sheds light on how to manage one's emotions, particularly anger, in challenging situations. Knoll provides a unique perspective on anger, viewing it as a response to boundary violations rather than labeling it as “good” or “bad”. His de-escalation strategies have found success in the most unlikely of places, including maximum-security prisons, attesting to their effectiveness. The takeaways from this episode can help leaders better understand their team's emotions, promote effective conflict resolution, and ensure a healthier, more empathetic workspace. The podcast dives deep into the concept of triggers and their role in hijacking rationality, offering effective tactics to anticipate, understand, and respond to these emotional triggers. The importance of self-awareness and self-regulation are highlighted, along with a novel approach to redirect the frustration caused by commonly-encountered triggers. Transitioning into the more sensitive realm of emotional invalidation, the episode examines its harmful effects in personal and professional relationships. The discussion is geared towards parents, teachers, team leaders, and anyone looking to foster emotional safety and create deeper, healthier relationships. The importance of emotional validation is underpinned, coupled with practical techniques to effectively validate and address emotions. Notably, this episode not only offers intellectual paths to managing anger but also guidance for those grappling with pervasive anger issues stemming from trauma. Prepare to be drawn into a riveting conversation about controlling anger for personal growth and professional success as you tune into this podcast. ----- About Doug Noll Doug Noll is a lawyer-turned-peacemaker.
