The one and only Sam Visnic is back to talk about using hypnotherapy to heal your physical health, gut health, and even IBS and chronic pain. He busts some myths and misconceptions of hypnosis and explains how hypnotherapy can help you reach new levels of health and wellness. Sam has utilized hypnotherapy in his practice for over 20 years. He's seen people use hypnotherapy to overcome a wide range of health issues from PTSD to IBS and chronic pain. Have you ever considered using hypnotherapy in your healing journey? Either way, after this episode, you'll definitely be more informed and more open to it! Sam Visnic is a Certified Massage Therapist specializing in neuromuscular and clinical massage, as well as a Certified Corrective Exercise Therapist. He's also the host of Who Knows This?? Podcast. Follow Sam Visnic @releasemuscletherapy Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning Key Highlights What is hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic practice that uses guided hypnosis to help a client reach a transcendent-like state of focus, concentration, diminished peripheral awareness, and heightened suggestability. Sam explains how hypnotherapy and sensory-based focus can be used in therapeutic processes to reconstruct our internal experience. He notes the similarities and differences between hypnotherapy, meditation, and mindfulness. The world is so stimulating that many of us have realized we're not as relaxed as we think we are. That's why people feel loopy and out of it after their first hypnotherapy session - it's because they're actually relaxed and they've forgotten what that feels like. Once you build that awareness, you can begin cultivating more of that in your life. Sam describes how creating deep change isn't harder than creating simple change… it just requires a different set of skills. Resilience is one of the best skills you can develop to create change, maintain momentum, and accomplish your goals. People are using hypnotherapy to change the gut microbiome, improve gut health, and even heal IBS. How? Does hypnotherapy work just as well as the FODMAP diet? Tune in to find out! Lastly, Sam highlights the benefits of hypnotherapy in treating chronic pain. In episode #116, Tatiana shares her story of personal loss. After a healthy first pregnancy, she was surprised when something didn't feel right during her second pregnancy. After several ultrasounds, it was determined that she had a blighted ovum. With very little information about what that meant, Tatiana had to do her own research. As a mental health provider herself (a licensed marriage and family therapist), Tatiana knew to ask for support even though it was not offered or readily available. She also had to learn how to communicate with her significant other and her family during this stressful time. Her experience has propelled her to work toward getting a perinatal mental health certification, so she can help other parents process their pregnancy losses. As a result of this experience and her stress levels, Tatiana and her family needed to make drastic changes. They recently relocated, and with her decreased stress she was able to get pregnant again. Topics Discussed: blighted ovum, stress, communication with your partner after miscarriage, talking with others about miscarriage, support after miscarriage, marriage and family therapy CONNECT WITH TATIANA - instagram.com/g_e_tservices MISCARRIAGE HOPE DESK RESOURCES- Miscarriage Hope Desk aims to help women struggling miscarriage, pregnancy loss and recurrent miscarriages (RPL), by providing the following resources- - Library of Articles, found here- https://miscarriagehopedesk.com/library/understanding-why/ - Instagram Community- https://instagram.com/miscarriagehopedesk - Facebook Community- https://www.facebook.com/groups/1617075958466247/ - Free Miscarriage Lab Checklist- https://miscarriagehopedesk.com/labs - Free Weekly Newsletter- http://miscarriagehopedesk.com/newsletter FREE MEAL PLANS Do you need help getting healthy, tasty meals on the table? In this episode I'm going to share my thoughts on stress, overwhelm and generally living a happier and more productive live. This morning I was talking to a coaching client…an amazing, caring and compassionate chiropractor. We were chatting about overwhelm, she was sharing just how stressed she was because of all of the things that she NEEDED to be doing at the moment. Her to do list seemed endless and I felt slightly overwhelmed just hearing all the things that she NEEDED to do. Here's something I want you to think about… The language we use to describe our lives has a huge impact on whether we end up stressed and overwhelmed or happy and productive.  Our brain doesn't know the difference between an emotional/imagined stress and a physical “real” stress like being chased by a mugger or stalked by a tiger. So…if you want to feel less stress and overwhelmed then perhaps start looking closer at the language you're using. Want to learn more? Listen now. The episode expounds on some easy wins towards weight loss and body transformation, as well as achievable daily habits to get giant results. So, read on to discover how easy wins can improve your overall health. Turning Point My Learn True Health podcast has been so fulfilling since it first launched in 2016. Today, the podcast surpassed four million downloads, and I feel blessed that my mission of helping people get their health back is taking off. But it didn’t feel like easy wins were achievable during the lowest points in my life. I had many health struggles for years and was even bed-ridden at one point. Eleven years ago, I met my husband. At the time, I was type 2 diabetic, I had chronic infections, chronic adrenal fatigue, and eventually had to quit my job. I also struggled with brain fog, infertility, PCOS, and depression because doctors told me I couldn’t have kids. Dealing With Depression What kept me together despite my health struggles was my mindset. Through my journey of learning true health, I learned NLP or neuro-linguistic programming and became a Master Practitioner and Trainer of it. I also learned timeline therapy, hypnosis, and coaching because I knew I needed to work on my emotions as well. My depression was at its worse when my mom passed away in my 20s and my father followed shortly after. I was so depressed and broken when my mom died of cancer. I wanted to find a solution, come out the other side to be stronger and better. That’s why I discovered NLP. While I felt like a prisoner of my own body, my spirit, mind, and mindset weren’t. That’s what kept me going. And that’s when I decided to pursue a career to help people. Neuro-linguistic Programming Neuro-linguistic Programming is a mixture of behavioral psychology and cognitive therapy. It’s an understanding of the conscious and unconscious mind. Back in the 60s, the creators looked around therapists who are getting outstanding results.  They created a system around what they do to replicate those excellent results. Tony Robbins is a great example. He took the practitioner level with Richard Bandler and John Grinder who were the creators of Neuro-linguistic Programming. They allow you to shift your beliefs, mindset and emotional state, as well as let you change even your unconscious habits. The technique works, and you need to know when to use each method to help you. Neuro-linguistic Programming is not deep hypnosis. There’s a light trance to guide the person to their aha moments and breakthroughs. But it’s not manipulative in a deep state of trance. Find Solutions Back in 2005, my health was getting worse and didn’t understand anything about nutrition or healing my body. Then I realized you have to set the intention of what you want. I wanted to find the answers to my help problems. So, in 2008 when Netflix just started streaming documentaries, my husband and I started watching health documentaries. The first one we watched advised people to shop within the perimeter of the grocery store. In one week, we cut out all the junk food we were eating. Food Choices With a month of just eating meat, eggs and dairy, vegetables and fruits, my husband and I also went sugar-free and avoided processed foods. My chronic infections went away with a whole foods diet. Years later, I came across a Naturopath who had an interesting way of explaining supplements, nutrition, and diet. Hence, I started following his recommendations. My diabetes went away in three months, as well as my chronic adrenal fatigue and brain fog. Plus, my PCOS corrected itself. My infertility went away, and we now have a 4-year old boy conceived naturally. To think we tried conceiving for six years. It turned out; easy wins entailed doing diet and lifestyle changes. Because of my success, I felt had to get this information out there. Hence, the Learn True Health Podcast was born. With over 300 episodes, we have interviewed experts. That’s why I love the mission of Mitch Harb. Because making easy wins is how I got my health back one little step at a time. Minerals And Supplements In 2011, when my husband and I intentionally went gluten-free, I lost 25 pounds of water weight in a month. I went down two ring sizes, and my husband went down two and a half ring sizes. At this point, I realized that minerals are essential. Before I took supplements, I was hungry all the time because my body was craving minerals. Our cells need sixteen minerals to make insulin work with the cell. One of the minerals is chromium, and the other is vanadium. They are trace minerals and the most important thing you can give to your body. We’re not getting it well in our diet anymore because of the farming process over the last hundreds of years. Furthermore, we don’t mineralize the soil, and we don’t rotate the crops. Plus, pesticides like Monsanto’s Roundup is a chelator. As a result, they bind to the trace minerals in our soil, and they wash them away. I don’t think I would have resolved all my health issues if I had only eaten healthy foods because I was so deficient in minerals. However, I’m not saying supplements are the answer. Supplements fill in the gaps, and sometimes that is the missing piece that puts the whole thing into place. Sugar-free and Dairy-free To be able to be sugar-free and dairy-free, you have to admit there’s an addictive component to dairy. Every dairy from every animal including humans has an addictive component to it because we have to make the calf or the baby want to suckle and drink the milk to survive. But the problem is when we take the milk and concentrate it, it stimulates dopamine and all the feel-good hormones. It feels good to consume dairy, but 51% of the population can’t tolerate it because it comes from the immune system of another animal. Sometimes our immune system reacts to it which can cause a lot of inflammation. So, for a month, try the elimination diet and observe the reaction of your body. Every month, eliminate one thing, do a test and reintroduce it. You can do a blood testing for this, but they’re not accurate. Boosting Energy Levels Balancing blood sugar gives you more energy. And drinking enough water is essential because if there’s a 5% reduction in our hydration, we have a 25 % reduction in our energy production. On the other hand, B-vitamins are great which you can get from vegetables. But the best thing to boost energy levels is having a good sleep. Sleep hygiene also is a fantastic thing to look into like wearing blue-blocking glasses. Blue-blocking glasses block the light from the blue light which mimics moon-based sun. It tricks your brain into thinking it’s not time to make melatonin or the sleep hormone. But when you wake up, get some sunlight directly on your eyeball because that burns away the melatonin and resets your sleeping rhythm. Try also to stay away from caffeine. Caffeine is a replacement for sleep, and that will lead to adrenal burnout and exhaustion. Healthy sleep habits set you for healing mode and more energy to do more things. There is an adjustment period, but the rewards are more significant in the long run. Infertility I eliminated twelve bad foods that this Naturopath recommended. Bad foods cause damage to the body and inflammation. So, I took away the foods that were harming me, filled my body with foods that are healing, took supplements for three years and then consulted my doctor to help me increase my healthy cholesterol. My doctor determined I should get on some Chinese herbs. Then I finally got pregnant the next month. It’s a case-to-case basis so consult a health practitioner you can trust. As for men, some studies show that the last 12 months of a man’s health goes into the health of their son. But the woman’s health is more important because the baby is living in her womb and living off the nutrients in the woman’s body. The reason why we have so many miscarriages is that the body is saying it cannot support the baby on a cellular level. Traditional medicine is just starting to acknowledge this. Pharmaceutical medicine wants to suppress knowledge around Holistic Medicine. The best thing you can do to get pregnant is to prepare the body for over a year before conception. Take your supplements to make sure you’re getting all the minerals — 16 minerals and 12 amino acids. Also, make sure to avoid eating crappy foods that cause inflammation and damage to your body. Avoid being exposed to chemicals and pesticides as well. Eat food that makes you feel good for days after. Then do a food and mood journal to get to know your body more. An excellent book is Dirty Genes by Ben Lynch. The book gives a good understanding of how to support your body based on your genetics in terms of nutrition. Folate, iron or folic acid is good, but there are many other nutrients you need to support the body. The Right Mindset I have a technique I love to teach through my Free Your Anxiety webinar. Not only does it get to the root cause and eliminate anxiety, but it sets you back towards success. The body and the mind create anxiety when we’re focusing on the things we don’t want to have and having it happen. Example, if you wake up in the morning with fear, procrastination, worry, and anxiety, these are all symptoms of the same problem. Then eventually your gut health suffers as well as your hormones.  Negative thoughts also trigger stress mode and its robbing the body of resources because you’re taking the body out of healing mode. Instant survival mode exhausts your long-term resources. It can cause disease and will not help you heal.  Try this simple technique: Close your eyes. Float 15 min past the successful completion of the event that you’re interested in completing. Imagine yourself a year from now looking down on your life and look at it from the standpoint of success. The whole point of this technique is that you have to make up a vision in your mind. Imagine yourself at a particular moment in time, and it is working out successfully. It’s what you want in your future.  A positive mindset is when a problem arises; you want to solve it from the logic brain and be calm and centered. Because ultimately, stress never helps you solve a problem. Critical Thinking We were raised to be victims of society. In any giant industry profiting from people being a certain way, there are very few institutions that want us to be free thinkers. An excellent resource is John Gatto’s book, Weapons of Mass Instruction. He was a teacher who won outstanding awards. It talks about the history of our school system is designed to make good little factory workers.  School systems systematically took critical thinking out of the educational system 150 years ago. It’s called the Trivium. It’s a 2500-year old system taught in Plato’s era. You can link to the Trivium Education website if you want to learn more about critical thinking. Again, I want to emphasize that stress is not an emotion but getting rid of it is life-changing. You don’t feel stress. But instead you accumulate it, and your body snaps when you ignore the signs. But you can cure yourself through easy wins. Bring stress down by laughing every day or do meditation. Doing five things every day that bring down stress are considered easy wins. Ultimately, find the things that bring you joy so you can achieve true health. Get Connected With Mitch Harb! Transform your inner critic into your best friend https://puravidahealthcare.com/blog Sign up for Ashley's January Health Transformation Live Workshop: http://learntruehealth.com/yes   Decreasing Stress http://learntruehealth.com/decreasing-stress Decreasing stress and listening to your inner critic plays a significant role in our overall well-being. Once we master ways of decreasing stress and listening to our inner critic, this self-awareness can help us cope with the demands and stress from outside factors. To explain the ways of decreasing stress and listening to your inner critic, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger will dive into that in this episode. Early Years Dr. Nicola Dehlinger first learned about Sigmund Freud when she was in elementary school. She was turned on by his concept regarding analyzing dreams and helping people feel better. When Dr. Nicola Dehlinger reached high school, her interest turned to psychiatry. But doing pre-med in college, she hated it. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger had a hard time connecting with pre-med colleagues. Defining Moment Studying about U.S. health care systems, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger who was then 19 years old, was dissatisfied. She wondered what to do especially since she was almost done with pre-med. One year when she was back at home for winter break, the mom of one of Dr. Nicola Dehlinger’s friends suggested that she talk to her doctor.  That doctor happened to be a Naturopathic Doctor, and a very popular one, too. “As things evolved for me during medical school, I was drawn to mind-body medicine. I wanted to help put back together the relationships between our emotions, mental well-being, and physical health,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. Self-Discovery Dr. Nicola Dehlinger’s first job was at an HIV wellness clinic. Because she speaks Spanish, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger was hired as a medical assistant and worked with a lot of therapists. “I got to hone my skill set around integrating Naturopathic Medicine and physical health with this mental health component,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. “I did it for three years and moved to Colorado in 2006 to help co-found a wilderness therapy organization called Open Sky.” Personal Journey Life outside looked great, but Dr. Nicola Dehlinger soon realized she wasn’t happy. She was in an emotionally abusive marriage and decided to work on herself by decreasing stress. “Through my process of traditional therapy, mind bodywork with my mentor, I started cultivating a relationship with myself,” Dr. Nicola Dehlinger said. “That relationship with myself was what enabled me to get out of a job that was tearing me apart on a personal level. And get out of relationships that weren’t supportive to me on any level.”  Soon after, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger eventually opened a private practice and made time to sit with patients. It was then that she realized that her patients had the key to their healing and decreasing stress. “My job got easy. Just by listening to people more deeply, I started realizing how much wisdom each of us brings to the table but that we don’t see. Because we’ve been told that we don’t know the answers,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger also realized that the more she can help people come back into themselves and decreasing stress, the fewer symptoms they have. This way, they can enjoy more health and vitality in their life. “The number one expert on your health and well-being will always be you. And sometimes it’s nice to have a guide. Because we don’t necessarily know which way to go,” Dr. Nicola Dehlinger said. “The body is divinely wise. When you have symptoms, that is the body expressing dis-ease in somewhere in the body.”  Understanding Stress In our culture, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger says we don’t get praised for acknowledging stress. Career expectancy is higher. And the pace in which we communicate now between text and social media, we are expected to process about a thousand times more pieces of information in a day than we were 20 or 25 years ago. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger also mentions that with regards to technology, there is a physiological stressor of receiving information. She believes we are running ourselves down in small increments. “When we start normalizing a collective experience, all of a sudden, nobody is talking about it anymore. It’s interesting how we don’t see it and don’t equate it.” Dr. Nicola Dehlinger said. Common Denominators Dr. Nicola Dehlinger observed that most people would identify with the feeling of overwhelm when it comes to stress. Another symptom is sharpness regarding being cognitive. On the other hand, some people have issues with insomnia. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger says peeing in the night is an indicator of sleep quality unless it is a prostate issue. Having a hard time getting out of bed, digestive changes and constipation can also be stress factors. “Part of that is because we don’t have enough energy to wake up early enough to have morning routines like five minutes of stretching, a glass of lemon water before coffee and a breakfast that you sit down and chew,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger also says we have to think about all of the physiological components that the sympathetic nervous system does for us to fight or flee. We were designed to be in that fight or flight around 10% of the time. And physiologically, it has a significant impact on blood sugar metabolism, cholesterol, and blood flow. But the good news is, we can reverse all of this. “Adverse childhood events affect. Around two adverse events pose a risk of increase of disease, disability and even premature death by ten years,” Dr. Nicola Dehlinger said. “If more than four adverse events occurred, one is more likely to have a dangerous lifestyle like smoking, attempted suicide, alcoholic or using IV drugs when they become adults.”  She adds, “Our tendency to be in abusive relationships, to becoming obese, having heart and lung disease and liver disease have a higher risk of depression and overall lower health and vitality. Once we realize their early experiences could determine chronic disease as an adult in childhood, then we can start working on that.” Emotional And Mental Effects The moment when Dr. Nicola Dehlinger addresses the history of abuse or trauma of the patient and start exploring that, she helps people safely tell their story. If there’s nobody to help us integrate that experience, it becomes a glitch in our system. “We start tripping over that disintegrated experience and form a solid memory. Then when we are triggered to remember that event, we can’t integrate that experience,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. “All of a sudden, all these other experiences we have in an adult body or adult experience, it pulls on a string. And the whole system gets reactivated.”  Dr. Nicola Dehlinger says what she can do is help someone be more present by assisting them to acknowledge that it was impactful to them. She says we can’t change our paths, but we can change how we can relate to it by bringing it out of the closet and into the light.  Emotional vs. Physical Health Dr. Nicola Dehlinger believes emotion and physical health are very related. She says we don’t value rest. But it’s not about sleep, but instead, it’s about the lack of doing something while awake. “When there is an energetic shift in the body, it creates a chemical shift, and that creates a psychological shift. We have to let go of this idea that our mental body isn’t affecting our physiology,” Dr. Nicola Dehlinger explains. Ways in Decreasing Stress It’s okay if you don’t have much time to devote to yoga or meditation practice. But if you have five minutes and you can use an app or follow the inhale and exhale of your breath, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger says you can change how your genes express themselves. “It creates a mitochondrial resilience. Because some cellular prophecies get stabilized to the adaptation of oxidated stress. And that, in turn, enhances cell survival and cell function. The more we practice, the more of these mitochondrial-positive changes we see occur,” Dr. Nicola Dehlinger said. According to Dr. Nicola Dehlinger, these are the core cellular changes that are creating a broad base of shifting. And that’s how the mind-body affects doing something like relaxation. When we have better molecular resilience, we will see more physiological medical, psychiatric resistance. “For the body to be able to receive food, we have to be more in that parasympathetic states. Take three deep breaths before starting a meal. Put your fork down between bites. These are mindful practices,” recommends Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger says people realize that when you stop and don’t push through, you come back to your task infinitely more refreshed. She also says that the reason high school classes and therapy sessions are 50 minutes long, is because every hour, our brain wants to do something new. “It doesn’t have to be something big. This is how we start the process of disconnecting. We don’t respond to our body when it’s thirsty, hungry or needs to use the bathroom,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. Physiological Benefits Of Decreasing Stress Dr. Nicola Dehlinger says cortisol has a significant impact in decreasing stress. Because it has two main roles in the body. One is to manage stress, and the other is to manage inflammation. “Our body is going to give the cortisol down that stress management pathway preferentially. And we won’t have as much cortisol dedicated to the management of inflammation,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger.  She adds, “Inflammation is a huge part of our repair system in our body. Where we can get trouble is when that repair system never gets shut off. It can lead to another disease state like Parkinson’s, irritable bowel syndrome or cardiovascular disease. It is also important to look at what you are eating. You may be sensitive to food that is creating more inflammation in your system as a whole.” Jumpstart To Decreasing Stress First, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger advises to jot down a list of 5 to 10 symptoms. Then get quality sleep, have clarity of mind, proper digestion, mood patterns. “There is also a huge spectrum of adrenal fatigue where when we first start getting adrenal burnout, it feels good. The next stage is where we are feeling wired and tired. We’re starting to feel the effect of the stimulation. And our body will then start to be resistant to all the stress,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. In the end, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger says the cortisol will drop. Everything in our body gets low like anxiety, depression, irritability. “Recognize that this is a long process. Give yourself a one out of ten rating daily at the end of every day to track what you do. Let your body time to get 80 to 90% healed,” said Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. Inner Critic Dr. Nicola Dehlinger is running a 5-month program, “Becoming Your Own Best Friend: A Five Month Program to Tame your Inner Critic, Let Go of Self-Judgment, and Lift Depression to Create an Inspired, Joyful Life!” It is a web-based program designed to help all of us quit beating ourselves up and find more compassion for ourselves. “We spend so much time and energy shutting out our inner voice. And we run, hide, or push against it. The inner critic is that part of the brain that lights up when we make a mistake to that we remember it and not make a mistake again,” Dr. Nicola Dehlinger said. The inner-critic will show our mistakes to us a lot of times. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger says it’s a self-protective mechanism that helps you to learn and grow from past mistakes or experiences. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger further explains that the inner critic thinks that he or she is the only one driving the bus. It has to hammer the message into the ground because nobody is listening. And nobody is actually in communication nor a relationship to this part of ourselves. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger believes it’s time to face this part of ourselves that we think is mean and cruel. And we can come back to our natural state of being which is the state of self-awesomeness. “Start getting in touch with yourself in a way that you’re understanding what’s driving the stress and what’s driving you the pressure that you’re putting on yourself to do what you’re doing. Become aware there’s a problem,” advises Dr. Nicola Dehlinger. She adds, “Then let yourself feel into whatever that thing is. it will inherently shift how you are relating to whatever is stressing you out, and you’re probably could be inspired by the way you could do it differently.”  Bio Dr. Nicola Dehlinger received her B.A. in International Health from Brown University in 1997, graduating with honors. During college, she ran her first peer education groups for at-risk adolescents. In her undergraduate and post-graduate years, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger did extensive international travel looking at various psycho-social factors which affect personal health and healthcare delivery.  Dr. Nicola Dehlinger also learned from local traditional healers about the impact of the community on individual health. Before moving from Boston to Phoenix, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger was certified as a Reiki Master/Teacher in the traditional Usui system of Reiki, a Japanese healing art. Between travel expeditions, she did case management and client advocacy for people living with mental health, HIV, and addiction issues.  Dr. Nicola Dehlinger graduated from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona in 2004. In addition to the standard curriculum, she took classes in craniosacral therapy at the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts.  During medical school, she served as a Naturopathic Medical Assistant at an HIV wellness organization (Body Positive) in Phoenix, AZ. She also worked at a domestic violence shelter providing support to women and their children. After completing medical school, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger maintained a private practice in a yoga studio. She also worked with patients at Body Positive where she utilized her Spanish fluency working with the Latino community.  In 2006, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger moved to Durango, CO to co-found Open Sky, a wilderness therapy program for young adults and adolescents coping with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, disordered eating, substance abuse, failure to launch, and others. In her role as Wellness Director, she was the first to integrate naturopathic medicine into wilderness therapy and set a new standard of care for health and nutrition practices in therapeutic programs across the country.  Dr. Nicola Dehlinger created a weekend designed to expose parents to wellness practices and learn how to incorporate them into their already full lives effectively. It was working at Open Sky that rekindled her interest in mental health-related issues and brought her back to the principle of actively connecting the mind and body as the key to healing.  Today, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger sees clients in her naturopathic medical practice in Durango. Her focus is working with clients on mental health issues – from insomnia to anxiety to eating problems. She also enjoys working with people who are interested in enhancing their life by optimizing their health. Dr. Nicola Dehlinger welcomes all patients, regardless of age or ailment, who are willing to invest in themselves. Raised and educated on the East Coast, Dr. Nicola Dehlinger relocated in 2000 and fell in love with the openness of the Southwest. It was in this part of the country that she learned how to rock climb and strengthened her passion for hiking, camping, and yoga.  In her free time, if you can’t find her in the mountains, you will see her in the garden or the kitchen with her son. Episode 205: As women especially, our auto-pilot language tends to air on the side of caution. We don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. We don't want to walk on any toes. We don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. While this comes from good intentions, the language that we use in order to protect everyone around us typically hurts ourselves-- the most important person in our lives. Have you ever been hurt by someone and kept it bottled up? Have you ever shared your pain with another, but added that you're probably being overly sensitive or emotional? Have you ever reached out to someone you looked up to and put them on a pedestal by lowering your own value (possibly without even realizing it)? We use words such as "just, sorry, kind of, actually" and many more, as a way to decrease the assertion of our speech. We want to ensure what we say comes across as sweet and pretty, because our programming tells us that if we don't, we are not going to be liked. We are going to be seen as a biatch. What is happening deep within is an internal belief that we are not worthy of being upset. When you speak in this way, you begin to believe that your emotions or time is not as valuable as someone else's. You begin to think that your voice is not as important. It's not going to be a fast transformation, but it's time we begin to slow down with our speech to be more intentional with our words. It's time we reclaim our feelings, presence, statements and truth. Are you ready to fully step into your power? Desire a clearing of the throat chakra? Want to take care of yourself first and foremost, at last? If so, this podcast is for you. Why we feel the need to over-compensate our truth with smiley faces, exclamation points and filler words to ensure the receiver feels comfortable with what we are saying. Most of us have been raised to believe we are "pretty and sweet" our entire lives. If this is our subconscious programming, we are going to make sure everything we say is also "pretty and sweet." We are caught between saying something powerfully and holding ourselves back. We are stepping into our truth and then backpedaling right out of it. Here is a recent Instagram post I wrote around this topic. Our speech becomes our thoughts. Our thoughts become our emotions. Our emotions become our beliefs. What we say and think is so important and should never be underestimated. (this is where the Law of Attraction all begins) Differentiating the Social Self vs. Professional Self (By Steve Chandler) Some useless words to begin releasing from your speech and emails, including: "sorry, just, like, kinda of, actually, does that make sense?" A few tips on how to clean up and strengthen your emails / texts. Why you should put your laptop or phone away in moments you feel anxious or reactive. How to present yourself to someone you are making a request of or sharing something deep with. (Hint: don't water down your speech...it makes it less likely they will listen to you and you are subconsciously programming yourself to believe you are not worthy of speaking powerfully!) What to do when you begin noticing yourself using these phrases and words moving forward. Episode 203: Do you have a blog you've been waiting to launch? Have a podcast you've been wanting to put into action? Have an Instagram account you've been thinking about starting? Maybe it's not something you want to create, but rather a risk you want to take. Is there a person you've been waiting to show interest in? Is there a city you've been dreaming of living in? A house you've been wanting to buy? Too often, I hop on a 1:1 coaching call and ask my client, "What are you wanting to create? What are you wanting to see happen in your life?" and receive a crystal clear picture of their vision but yet no action steps have been taken. "I'm waiting until I fully know who my target market is." "I'm waiting until my photographer's calendar frees up so I can get some professional headshots." "I'll start once I have ten blog posts ready to go up." "I haven't found the time yet." These sneaky little tasks are sometimes valid, but more often than not, they are merely tactics we use to stay stuck, small and in our personal bubble of perfectionism. In today's podcast I'm going to be deep diving into 5 reasons why you should get started with that idea asap. Show notes: FABFITFUN is a seasonal box, with full-size beauty, fitness and lifestyle products. Check out www.FABFITFUN.com and use the code "MINDYBODY" to save $10 off your first box, making it only $39.99 (yet every box is worth $200 in product!) >> don't miss their unique Spring box! Some insight into my recent trip to Israel and all of the beautiful experiences I had (and how I'm dealing with being home now) Whatever business you are desiring to create WILL take time. There is no need to make your business idea perfect before launching it because no matter what, it will take organic growth for people to trust you and continue to return to your work. Trust is built over time. Whatever you’re creating will evolve and change. Don’t try to make it perfect from the start. Don't try to make your business fit into a box because when you do that, you will also start to shove your life into a box. The best way to create something is with baby steps. Getting started asap could simply mean getting started with one small thing today. The Domino Effect-- getting started with that thing you keep thinking about will give you the courage to get started with something else you’ve been thinking about (writing that book, asking out that guy, applying for that job, moving to that city) Your fears are usually BS from your inner critic. Sometimes you have to do the dang thing to realize it. Looking to take the next step with that idea? Contact me about coaching. Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

Episode 200: It's evident in our society that women have been exposed to two extremes with their sexuality, both which lead to sexual shame: exploitation and repression. The media has been exploiting women's sexuality for decades as a way to diminish and demean its true power down to a crisp. As a result: men have treated unmet desires with violence and ownership, women have used their bodies as a form of manipulation to get what they want/don't want, and sex has been involved in the marketing of just about everything from cars to perfumes to food. We have been constantly reminded in commercials, movies and ads what a woman's sexuality should look like...but absolutely nothing about what it feels like. On the other hand, many of us across the world have had our sexuality repressed from a lineage of unhealthy relationships with sexuality or through religion. In many religions, a woman's sexuality is her most prized possession and once it's "taken" it cannot be replenished. Again, there is too much focus on what sex should look like (in this case, within the context of marriage), but not enough on what it feels like. When young girls learn at an early age that men only want them for their bodies and they must hide away their sexuality to stay safe, they grow up with trust issues not only with others but certainly with themselves. They want to hide away their sexuality, avoid eye contact, use body manipulation (binge eating or starving) as tactics to feel in control, and they lose their ability to stay present with another human, especially when being intimate. Most importantly, they lose touch with what a "yes" really feels like and what a "no" really feels like...within the bedroom and the real world. I believe it's time we dive deep into these topics on the Mind Body Musings Podcast. Show notes: Why it's so important we collectively decide to promote not only body positivity in our families, but also sex positivity. “Do not cause a man to stumble.” Growing up in a conservative Christian household, I was told this biblical verse a lot. Unfortunately, the only context in which I remember it is in regards to my feminine body. Some examples of how my negative relationship with sexuality were reinforced growing up, including: having signed contracts in my closet and bedroom, the massive pile of Christian dating books blocking my doorway and the True Love Waits Program. One of the reasons why many women have held back from speaking about their experience with sexual abuse is because of their inner thoughts like "I asked for it" and for feeling responsible for what was done to them. When you are taught as a young girl that you are in control of a man "stumbling" (and it's your responsibility to ensure he doesn't) you begin to think that it's truly your fault when you experience advances. Backpedaling: speaking your truth and then taking it back out of fear. My first real relationship was with a man who was insecure with his body and constantly projected his own unhealthy sexuality onto me. The story of my first kiss when I was 13 year olds and how it ended with me bawling in the garage out of shame and fear. We are doing sexual healing for hundreds of generations-- not just ourselves. This is why this work is so big. Sexuality is directly linked to creativity. When you stifle one, you stifle the other. Why it's time to come together as men and women to build something together (listen to the episode I did with Josh Trent about this HERE) "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" >> Why this kind of language is so detrimental to everyone's ability to trust. Body manipulation / disordered eating is directly related to your relationship with your sexuality. A few things you can begin to do to heal your sexual shame. Episode 197: Last week, I had a friend come up to me and share that he had been experiencing guilt for his happy childhood after he experienced his first sharing circle where he listened to everyone's traumatic stories... but yet he had nothing "deep" to contribute on his own. He felt guilty for speaking up when it was his turn, so instead of saying the truth ("well, I had an amazing childhood"), he searched for something that would fit in better with everyone else's story-- even if it wasn't 100% true. I've had several clients share with me that they don't know how to handle their recent fortune in life, whether they are referring to their amazing new boyfriend, an easy move across the country or a recent paycheck that's blown their mind. I've had friends share that they are feeling guilty for living a life of such abundance and joy while others surrounding them are in the depths of addiction, depression, fear, anxiety and/or other downers. I get it-- when the world is full of so much pain, it can make it challenging for those of us feeling truly happy to totally own the experience, let go of the guilt for not "doing enough", and to embrace the goodness we are experiencing. Have you found yourself feeling guilty for your happiness? Do you feel helpless in a room full of people who aren't in the same state of abundance as you are? Do you feel like you're not "doing enough" to help those less fortunate, even though you're doing what you can in those small moments to brighten the day of another? If any of this is resonating, this might be the reminder you need. Show notes: The difference between the Dark Shadow and the Light Shadow (and which one is typically harder to "own") Dark Shadow: the side of yourself that you rather not see come out Light Shadow: your brilliance, beauty, gifts, love and light Why you can sometimes trigger people when you own your brilliance and Light Shadow An example of a friend who struggled with sharing his happy past in a roomful of people who were sharing their trauma and wounds (and the feelings of guilt that came up) The best question you can ask yourself when you feel guilty for having abundance and happiness A couple of ways that angels speak to us Why feeling guilty for your happiness is giving the Universe mixed signals (and decreases your chances of keeping that abundance) The ego is always looking for ways to feel important which is why even in ease, the ego may be looking for a reason to fear and stand out Woundaraderie: camaraderie with wounds "We don't only surrender in the darkness, we also surrender in the light." Another example of how we feel shame with our health and body image even when it's in good standing Why it's so important for people who want to do GOOD to have the money and power, rather than the people who are currently running the show and digging our environment's grave "I can receive this" >> something to put on a sticky note in your bathroom! Why you don't need to constantly prove to the Universe that you're deserving of your happiness The importance of allowing yourself to retreat inward Connect with Maddy: Facebook (and/or “follow” my profile HERE) Instagram Mind Body Musings Podcast Coaching Get your free gift >> 5 Divinely Feminine Tools for Decreasing Stress and Anxiety HERE

Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

Episode 193: "Not enoughness" is an epidemic. Every single day, women and men hold themselves back from speaking up, taking risks, living out their truth and so much more because they don't feel like enough. A few common examples include... If only I had THIS (fill in the blank with something you believe you are lacking), then I would be able to date that kind of person. If only I looked like THAT (fill in the blank with some body standard), then I would be able to wear those outfits. If only I had HER level of success, then I would be able to say I've really "made" it. If only I had HIS ideas, I would be able to accomplish so much more in this lifetime. Many times our made-up beliefs around not being "enough" come from comparisons, but they also come from feelings of worthiness, our stories around failure/rejection and our fear of not being accepted into society if we show our true colors. Today on the Mind Body Musings Podcast I'm going to share some reframes around these beliefs. Show notes: The next Feminine Surrender Retreat is right around the corner! Reframe #1: Moving from "rejection" to "ejection" Rejection is simply someone ejecting themselves from the realm of possibility in your life Reframe #2: Moving from the pressure to do something different (to feel important) to realizing the power of being different You are loved for who you are, not what you do. You will never feel enough by doing more because the bar will continue to raise. If adopting a hyper masculine attitude isn't working for you, try a different approach. Adopt the mentality that you don't have to prove your worthiness because you already embody it. Reframe #3: Moving from "How will they take this?" to "How can I create this?" It is not your job to tell people how they are supposed to interpret you Listen to THIS episode with JP Sears to learn more about this from a well-known youtube star Stop trying to make everyone comfortable around you. You are doing people a disservice if you never allow them to feel triggered in your presence. If people feel triggered around you it is because they are seeing something within you that they can't stand within themselves Reframe #4: Moving from "Will they accept me?" to "How can I accept them?" Reframe #5: Moving from "I hate XX about myself" to "XX is absolutely a part of me" What "the world is inside of you" really means Grab your FREE ebook "5 Divinely Feminine Tools for Decreasing Stress and Anxiety" HERE Connect with Maddy: Facebook Instagram Mind Body Musings Podcast Coaching Sign up for a call to speak with me about the next Feminine Surrender HERE
