A fairy-tale English cottage set in a tranquil country garden. Snuggle up by an old stone fireplace and enjoy a cup of cocoa. An enchanting oasis of tranquillity in a quiet English hamlet, just forty minutes from exciting London. No, it's not Verbal Diorama HQ, but the description of Iris Simpkins' traditional English country cottage in The Holiday, the quintessential Christmas romantic comedy that only seems to get better and more appreciated with age. You could say it has gumption.Derided by critics in 2006, it's since become a Christmas holiday classic, invoking cosy nights snuggling by a roaring fire, and toasting to love, both romantic and platonic. With an all-star cast, and under the always steady hand of writer/director Nancy Meyers, The Holiday is your excuse to believe in the festive romantic spirit, despite the fact that Iris' charming cottage doesn't actually exist in real life... It's the last of the Stuart consorts this time with the consort of Queen Anne, Prince George of Denmark. Often maligned by contemporaries, George nevertheless had a significant role as the first male consort not to be king. Derided by many but loved by Anne, George was a player in the tumultuous events of the late seventeenth century and a bit of a trailblazer for unambitious chaps, but is that enough for the Rex Factor? Derided by both audiences and critics, we offer a defense of the film as a vital work of Carpenter's late period that manages to thrill as an action picture, while wryly thumbing its nose at the corrupt values of Hollywood and its own existence as a prototype for modern "legacy sequels".We begin by talking Carpenter in the 90s, a time when he was taking his biggest swings (while also facing some of his most frustrating conflicts with studios). Then, we take a look at the fascinating tenor of the film, and how it balances the acerbic, raw energy and wit of the original film while taking aim at societal ills of 1996 America with even more directness and urgency than its predecessor. Finally, we compare the film to other great movies (and one 2021 sequel specifically) that have followed in the spirit of 'Escape From L.A.', reckoning with legacy, while also boldly subverting audience expecations in pursuit of revealing the deeper truths and authenticity of their creators. My series on mainly albums but also films, that were either denied classic status on release or have been forgotten about since - Hamburger Hill is both. Derided a little on release as a poor cousin of the defining Platoon and a lower rent Full Metal Jacket, this sometimes trite Vietnam film builds up to an incredible climax, redolent of the harrowing intensity of Come and See, far more than Saving Private Ryan.

In Episode 82, the 966 hosts fly solo and discuss some of the top developments of late on Saudi Arabia - and there are a lot of them. First, the hosts discuss Richard's One Big Thing, which is the readout of the recent call between the U.S. National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. There were a lot of “Easter eggs” in that call's readout from the U.S. side, especially the focus on new priorities and less on the traditional dynamics of U.S.-Saudi relations. Next, the hosts discuss Lucien's One Big Thing this week, which is the Saudi-Iran thaw. When announced, the detente was surprising, and a timeframe of two months was declared. Lucien provides a timeline of what has happened since , and lays the foundation for a discussion on how Saudi Arabia's foreign policy has shifted in just a few weeks - not just on Iran, but on Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and others. Then the hosts finish up as always with Yallah! A discussion of six top storylines on Saudi Arabia from the previous week to get you up to speed headed into the weekend. 3:47 - Richard's One Big Thing is based on the readout of the recent call between the U.S. Here's what the Readout said from the U.S. side:“National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud of Saudi Arabia today. They discussed a number of global and regional matters, to include ongoing diplomacy related to ending the war in Yemen. Mr. Sullivan highlighted the remarkable progress in Yemen over the past year, during which fighting has nearly ceased under a UN-mediated truce. He welcomed Saudi Arabia's extraordinary efforts to pursue a more comprehensive roadmap for ending the war and offered full U.S. support for those efforts, noting that Special Envoy Tim Lenderking will be in the region over the coming days. Mr. Sullivan and Crown Prince Salman also discussed broader trends toward de-escalation in the region, while underscoring the need to maintain deterrence against threats from Iran and elsewhere. Mr. Sullivan reaffirmed President Biden's unwavering commitment to ensure Iran can never acquire a nuclear weapon. Mr. Sullivan and Crown Prince Salman committed to stay in regular contact and to accelerate contact between the Saudi and U.S. national security teams on issues including the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII), clean energy cooperation, and development and investment in cutting-edge Open Radio Access Network (O-Ran) 5G and 6G technologies.”15:42 - Lucien's One Big Thing this week, which is the Saudi-Iran thaw. When announced, the detente was surprising and a timeframe of two months was declared. But LIV Golf, the breakaway tour that's caused a civil war within golf's ranks, scored a major victory of its own this weekend. Derided as a tour for washed-up former stars and unknowns, a money grab for has-beens and never-was'es, LIV this weekend put three players in the top 6 — Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed — and 12/17 players made the cut. Whatever else LIV may be, on this weekend the breakaway tour came up big. “We're still the same people,” said Koepka, who held the clubhouse lead for three rounds and three holes. “I think that's just manufactured by the media that we can't compete anymore, that we are washed up.”Hajj Minister: Makkah and Madinah now host 1.3 million foreign pilgrims and visitorsMinister of Hajj and Umrah Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah said that Makkah and Madinah are witnessing a record number of foreign pilgrims and visitors and there are currently 1.3 million in the two holy cities. “All the procedures have been improved remarkably and there is a major qualitative shift in the movement of worshipers as well as in the facilities and services being provided to them inside the Two Holy Mosques.” he said while addressing a dialogue session as part of the first edition of the Manafea Forum, which kicked off here on Monday.Middle East debt issuances nearly triple in Q1 2023 as Saudis take leadMiddle East and North Africa (MENA) debt issuances nearly tripled year-on-year from January to March 2023 to $26.9 billion compared to the previous quarter, marking the highest start to a year by proceeds since 2011. Day 14 in a series of daily readings and meditations from "The School of Jesus Crucified" by Father Ignatius of the Side of Jesus. Rob will read sections from this book aloud daily throughout Lent to help draw us in deeper to our blessed Lord's Passion. Today we meditate on Jesus being derided and mistreated in the house of the high priest, Caiphas.#catholic #christian #lent********************************************************Avoiding Babylon was started during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During these difficult and dark days, when most of us were isolated from family, friends, our parishes, and even the Sacraments themselves, this channel was started as a statement of standing against the tyrannical mandates that many of us were living under. Since those early days, this channel has morphed into an amazing community of friends…no…more than friends…Christian brothers and sisters…who have grown in joy and charity.Avoiding Babylon does not criticize the hierarchy or institutional Church, especially Pope Francis. We recognize there is an unprecedented crisis in the Church, but we feel that there are other shows that address these issues that are more qualified than us. Instead, we try to remind ourselves and those who enjoy the channel that being Catholic is a joyful and exciting experience. We seek true Catholic fraternity and eutrapelia with other Catholics who, like us, are doing their best to live out their vocation with the help of God's Grace. Above all, we try to bring humor and joy to the craziness of this fallen world, for as Hillaire Belloc has famously said:“Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,There's always laughter and good red wine.At least I've always found it so.Benedicamus Domino!”https://www.avoidingbabylon.comTelegram Chat: https://t.me/+AMwZ2f9ChPg5NWNhRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssSpiritusTV: https://spiritustv.com/@avoidingbabylonRumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-1626455Odysee: https://odysee.com/@AvoidingBabylon Support the showCheck out our new store!
Chesa Boudin, a public defender and child of “radical royalty,” was elected as district attorney of San Francisco in late 2019 and recalled by voters in mid-2022. Derided by critics as soft on crime and heralded by supporters as a principled and effective proponent of reforms that voters actually favored, we talked about his accomplishments and challenges, including his interactions with San Francisco's mayor and police officials. I asked Chesa for his reflections on what he might have done differently as well as what any district attorney can really do about issues like homelessness and overdose fatalities. We also discussed why national media was so eager to draw national implications from his defeat.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He was one of the greatest rebels of Rome from the 1st century AD, but his name is not one you might initially think of. Derided by Roman historians as being little more than a bandit, the truth is very much the opposite. For several years, between 17 and 24 AD, Tacfarinas led a revolt against the Romans in North Africa, sending the province into turmoil and becoming the bane of all troops stationed there to fight him. Several times the Romans believed they defeated Tacfarinas and his Berber followers. Several times they were proved wrong as time after time Tacfarinas emerged from the desert with a new force to wreak havoc on wealthy North Africa. For too long, Tacfarinas' name has been side-lined in favour of more famous 1st century AD Roman rebels such as Boudica, Arminius and Caratacus. Now we're going to right that wrong. Joining Tristan on today's podcast is Dr Jo Ball, an Ancients veteran having been on the show twice before. Together Tristan and Jo talk through the incredible story of Tacfarinas and why he really was ‘the Desert Hydra.' See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Long before Paul W.S. Anderson was a Wife Guy, when he was but an ambitious young filmmaker with a single independent hit (Shopping) under his belt, he managed a surprise smash hit that would come to define his career as a blockbuster director. That movie was Mortal Kombat. Derided by critics but embraced by fans at the time, it made $122 million worldwide on an $18 million budget. It is still regarded by many as one of the best video game movies out there. Randy and Jens react.

Derided as a hodgepodge of mixed-bag dialog and a slightly scary, but not scary enough plot when it first hit in 2009, Jennifer's Body has - as of late - received a bit of redemption as a feminist horror classic of sorts. But not everyone agrees. Drop in and have a listen as we discuss the Diablo Cody-penned horror black comedy starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried.
Social media has well and truly become a place of activism. With current COVID restrictions, that is now necessary, with public gatherings banned. How effective is activism online? Derided as "slacktivism", is there nonetheless real world results from our online stands?

Playboy magazine first hit newsstands in December 1953, so it was quite well established by the time the United States joined the conflict in Vietnam. Derided by a portion of the population as disgraceful smut, the common retort from the men who perused the sordid pages was "I just read it for the articles." A BETTER PEACE welcomes Amber Batura to the studio as she discusses Playboy's place amongst soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines during the Vietnam conflict. She joins our Editor-In-Chief Jacqueline Whitt to explore how the articles and interviews the magazine presented truly were a lifeline to home, relaying the thoughts and concerns of the citizenry these military members represented. With subjects like Stanley Kubrick, Martin Luther King Jr., Nabokov, Ayn Rand, Muhammad Ali and Ralph Nader it's hard to deny that Playboy captured some of the most popular voices of the time. And perhaps there were other features that attracted the attention of young men in a far off land. But mostly they read it for the articles. I was in a small village outside of Hanoi when we ran across a Playboy store...and so I decided I have to know why this is here and why is it still here. Why is it branding the war basically? Simon's live report for Radio New Zealand's "Morning Report" with presenter Corin Dann.
Craig Ellwood was one of the most exciting people in American architecture. He took Los Angeles by storm and no one since has fully captured his personal style or his incredible story - but that's on the way. Although he took structural engineering courses at UCLA, Ellwood was not a licensed architect, but that did not matter to him or to his clients. Ellwood was a true design genius. Ellwood could sell, too. He had a red Ferrari (among other great cars) and was a perfect fit with the celebrity culture of Los Angeles. He was a master of promotion. Derided by the architecture profession of which he was formally not a part, he rose to public fame when three of his houses were included in the iconic Case Study House series for Arts and Architecture Magazine. His houses are still incredibly prized today. From poolside at the swanky Hotel Skylark, host George Smart interviews noted Ellwood restorer Barton Jahncke and his client, Ellwood owner Diane Bald, and later on George talks with architects of another Ellwood restoration, Joe Dangaran and Brett Woods.
Some know him as the Matrix, some (in France) know him as the most hated man in football. Jimbo, James Horncastle and Gab Marcotti review the life and times of Marco Materazzi. Derided by many as a red card or a penalty waiting to happen, Materazzi ended his career as a World Cup and treble winner. We all know what happened with Zidane, but in this Golazzo, with the help of former Everton team-mate Don Hutchison, we examine the man behind the Materazzi myth. It's Friday! It's Episode 79 and this week's guest might have a way to go to when making his case for this week's chosen film. So first, the guest! This week, we are delighted to be joined by the director of Shudder Exclusive Found Footage 3D, the excellent short film Stop and co-host of Science vs Fiction Podcast ... It's Steven DeGennaro! His chosen film? Sucker Punch! Coming hot on the heels of Watchmen, Sucker Punch was, and remains, the only film from director Zack Snyder that is not based on an existing IP. Derided at the time of release for being misogynistic at best, offensive at worst, the film is certainly divisive. Is the vitriol deserved or is there more to be found here? The synopsis is as follows: Locked away, a young woman named Babydoll retreats to a fantasy world where she is free to go wherever her mind takes her. Determined to fight for real freedom, she finds four women -- Rocket, Blondie, Amber and Sweet Pea -- to join together to escape the terrible fate that awaits them. With a virtual arsenal at their disposal, the allies battle everything from samurais to serpents, while trying to decide what price they will pay for survival. The Kulturecast continues Stanley Kubrick Month with a look at not only his last film but also his most controversial film: Eyes Wide Shut. The film stars real-life couple at the time Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as an on-screen couple whose relationship is tested when Cruise enters the bizarre underworld of a sex cult. Derided by many at the time as Kubrick's weakest film, Eyes Wide Shut has aged in the last two decades into not only one of the auteur's most beautiful movies but also an exciting look into the reality of the relationships that drive us as humans. Chris is joined by award-winning screenwriter Jess Byard to talk about the film; its place in Kubrick's filmography, and how the film has benefitted from age.You can follow Chris Stachiw at @KultureStach and the Kulturecast @kulturecast. The music is an original track from Eric Kniss of Wovoka. You can also subscribe to the Kulturecast on iTunes here. The election last week of Imran Khan as Pakistan's new prime minister is the latest political upset to rock 'the establishment' across many countries in recent years. Derided as a 'populist', Khan leads a new movement that is socially conservative, economically 'leftist', and ultimately nationalist. From Mexico's AMLO to Malaysia's Mahathir, 'Trumps' are coming to power all over the world. Whatever their political background, the one thing they have in common is an essential patriotism that...

This week on the program: Inaction on the Indian Act. Derided for decades, it’s hung in there as one of Canada’s oldest laws. Now there are hints from the federal Justice Minister that its days could be numbered... just not right away. Joining us with her thoughts on the delayed dismantling of the Act is Naomi Sayers, a law student active in legal reform and education who writes under the banner of kwetoday.com.// Our theme is 'nesting' by birocratic.
School administrators and other education groups could get an early Christmas gift if Congress overhauls the controversial 2002 education law known as No Child Left Behind. Derided over its standardized tests and accountability measures, the law could be reshaped by a Congress that's more eager to cut deals on elementary and secondary school accountability and shift responsibility to the states. The legislative text of the measure looking to replace the No Child Left Behind law was released November 30. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The first major retrospective of Richard Diebenkorn's work for 25 years opens at London's Royal Academy. Derided by some for making abstract art popular, does this new show, which includes his figurative paintings too, restore his reputation as a serious artist? A new Channel 4 drama "Coalition" dramatises the negotiations which took place immediately after the last general election and is based on first hand research by writer James Graham, whose past work includes Privacy, Tory Boyz and the Olivier-nominated This House. With Mark Gatiss as Peter Mandelson, how much of a behind the scenes insight does Coalition give us about this historic moment in British politics? And how well does it work as a drama? A revival of Bryony Lavery's award winning play Frozen opens at the Park Theatre in London tells the story of the disappearance of a 10-year-old girl, Rhona, through three protagonists: the girl's killer, her mother and a New York psychiatrist researching why people commit such crimes. How does Frozen negotiate such a controversial and complex subject as child killers? Set on a collection of islands off the coast of Virginia, Bailey longlisted debut novel "The Shore" by Sara Taylor interweaves stories that trace different generations of the same family over the course of 150 years. In "Mommy" 25 year old Canadian director Xavier Dolan returns to the theme of mothers and sons, first explored in his debut feature "I Killed My Mother." Casting Anne Dorval as a strong, independent woman overwhelmed with the task of caring for a teenage tyrant, how does he portray the pressures inflicted by the chaotic, testosterone fuelled madness of a 15 year old boy.

The final and 'most indispensable' founding principle of the Pre-Raphaelites was: "to produce thoroughly good pictures and statues". Derided by the establishment (including Charles Dickens) for producing art which was ugly and backward, the work of John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti...
Fannie Hurst's four-hankie bestseller had been filmed before in 1934, but Douglas Sirk's 1959 remake, his last Hollywood film, is the one to remember. Derided at the time by critics and audiences, it has come to sum up Sirk's serial attack on the hypocritical institutions of family and motherhood as practiced in '50s America.
