Take pleasure in the gut-wrenching excitement of a 90s action milestone! This week on The Dana Buckler Show, we are heading straight to Alcatraz to break down Michael Bay's 1996 definitive high-concept thriller, The Rock.Coming off the success of Bad Boys, Michael Bay was handed the keys to a massive blockbuster budget, a killer premise, and an absolutely legendary cast. The result? A beautifully shot, fast-paced, explosion-filled masterpiece that stands as a high-water mark for the golden era of 90s action cinema and Hollywood summer blockbusters. In this cinema retrospective, film historian Dana Buckler dives deep into: The Powerhouse Trio: The incredible, lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry between Nicolas Cage's frantic, vinyl-loving FBI chemical weapons expert Stanley Goodspeed and Sean Connery's sophisticated, badass British operative John Patrick Mason. The Sympathetic Villain: Ed Harris's brilliant, nuanced performance as General Hummel—an antagonist with legitimate, tragic motives that elevate the stakes way beyond a standard hostage situation. The Pinnacle of 90s Action: From the iconic, destructive Ferrari car chase through the streets of San Francisco to the brutal shower room standoff, we break down why the practical effects and set pieces in this film still hold up today. The Uncredited Script Doctors: How Hollywood legends like Quentin Tarantino, Aaron Sorkin, and Jonathan Hensleigh secretly helped polish the razor-sharp dialogue. Whether you're a long-time fan who can quote "Your best! Losers always whine about their best" line-for-line, or you're revisiting this classic Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer production era for the first time, grab your green smoke and join us for the ultimate film review.Welcome to The Rock!Join our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/danabucklershowJoin my Patreon for early access to all episodes, plus a new exclusive podcast, go to Patreon.com/howisthismovieSubscribe to the podcast on your favorite podcast platform by going to https://linktr.ee/DanaBucklerShowJoin our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/danabucklershowJoin Our Patreon for early access to all episodes, plus a new exclusive podcast, go to Patreon.com/howisthismovie #TheRock #TheDanaBuckler Show #90sAction #NicolasCage #SeanConnery #MichaelBay #FilmPodcast #MovieHistory #CinemaRetrospective #ActionMovies #90sCinema #FilmBuff

In the summer of 1998, Hollywood delivered two versions of the apocalypse within eight weeks of each other, and the story of how that happened is almost as dramatic as either film.Deep Impact, directed by Mimi Leder and released on 8th May, had been in development since the late 1970s, tracing its origins to producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown's desire to remake the 1951 sci-fi film When Worlds Collide. The project was ultimately merged with Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's The Hammer of God, before Spielberg, occupied with Amistad, handed the director's chair to Leder. What emerged was a deliberately restrained disaster film, one less interested in the mechanics of impact than in the texture of grief: how ordinary people, politicians, astronauts, and estranged families face the end with or without dignity. With scientific consultants including comet co-discoverers Carolyn and Gene Shoemaker, and ILM's groundbreaking digital tsunami, the film earned genuine respect from the astronomical community and grossed a respectable $349 million worldwide on an $80 million budget.Armageddon, released on 1st July under Disney's Touchstone Pictures banner, was a different creature entirely, and was, by most accounts, a direct competitive response to Deep Impact.Michael Bay's film was shot in just sixteen weeks, with unprecedented government and military access, under enormous studio pressure. Where Deep Impact depicted skilled astronomers, Armageddon hired oil drillers and sent them to space. Where Leder's film earned praise for plausibility, Bay's is famously scientifically inaccurate in many ways. Despite this, Armageddon grossed $553 million worldwide, topped the year's global box office, eventually received a Criterion Collection release and four Oscar nominations. Deep Impact did not. Both hinge on sacrifice, on families torn apart by cosmic indifference, on the question of who gets saved and who doesn't. Both were shaped by real cosmic events, which shook the scientific community and governments into action and Hollywood into a race to dramatise the unthinkable. One film aimed for the gut; the other aimed for the conscience. That Armageddon won commercially while Deep Impact won critically, and that Mimi Leder's career faltered, while Michael Bay built a franchise empire, tells you not just about the summer of 1998, but about which kinds of spectacle Hollywood, and audiences, are willing to reward.Everything wrong with Armageddon – Everyday Science StuffSupport Verbal DioramaLoved this episode? Some other notable films that he shot include the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Invaders from Mars (1986), Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), Friday the 13th (2009), The Boy (2016) and Mom and Dad (2017). He won the first MTV cinematography award for "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. He's worked with a record amount of artists in the industry including Billy Idol, Bette Midler, The Go-Go's, Mariah Carey, Ed Sheeran and Usher. Pearl filmed the Michael Bay-directed Meatloaf video, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", which he cites as "one of my personal all-time favorite projects ... I think the cinematography is pure, and it tells a story about the song." Michael Bay would later produce the 2003 Chainsaw remake and their collaborations continued on for years.  More films in Pearl's catalogue include Zapped! (1982), Pathfinder (2007) and The Apparition (2012).  He worked with Larry Cohen on a number of projects including Full Moon High (1981), It's Alive III: Island of the Alive (1987) and A Return to Salem's Lot (1987).

Our most-requested movie is celebrating its 30th anniversary! It's the kind of movie where a cable car inextricably flies straight up into air out of nowhere... A scene so amazing that Isaac Slade calls in to premiere a sequel to his Fray hit "Over My Head (Cable Car)" right here on this episode! We also have a brand new segment called "When was the last time David Hallgren watched this movie?" that we think will really go places. What if Quentin Tarantino wrote the Nicolas Cage parts, Aaron Sorkin wrote the government scenes, Sean Connery hired British writers and basically just played James Bond, and somehow it all came together into the only Michael Bay film in the Criterion Collection? The Rock absolutely should not work — and absolutely does.If you'd like to advertise with us or sponsor us, please e-mail greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.comSubscribe to Great Bad Movies wherever you listen to podcastsMore Great Bad Movies online:InstagramGreat Bad Movies WebsiteYouTubeEmail us at greatbadmoviesshow@gmail.com Hosted on Acast. Was macht er anders? Wo liegen die Probleme? Das klären wir in Folge 423.

Character Design Issues: Turtles' designs were criticized as grotesque, reducing relatability and making action scenes less believable. Storytelling Problems: Over-explained plots, especially regarding April O'Neil and Eric Sacks, bogged down the movie's pacing and clarity. Setting Conflicts: The film's setting away from New York City limited key identity elements and iconic landmarks associated with the turtles. Mixed Reception of Cast: Alan Ritchson as Raphael received praise, while others like Johnny Knoxville and Megan Fox faced criticism for their roles. Cultural Context Matters: The film reflected a 2014 era not fully embracing nerd culture, impacting its creative choices and audience reception.   Notes Production and Narrative Challenges This 2014 Ninja Turtles movie struggled with a lack of creative love and identity, making it feel like a disjointed and ashamed adaptation of the franchise (00:00). Identity Crisis and Shame Factor heavily influenced the movie's tone and plot, with the film almost dropping the "Teenage Mutant" part and considering alien origins for the turtles (11:31). The film's producers inserted convoluted backstory elements mid-production to "course correct" a script that initially strayed far from the core Ninja Turtles mythos. This led to an over-explained, bogged-down narrative that felt like a "walk of shame" rather than an embrace of the IP's strengths. The era's mainstream culture had not fully embraced nerd properties, causing awkward attempts at modernization and distancing. Plot Bloat and Over-Explanation detracted from the movie's pacing and engagement, especially with April O'Neil's bloated and often unconvincing reporter storyline (20:53). Scenes focus too long on generic Michael Bay-style action and April's personal struggles rather than on the turtles themselves. The turtles are introduced late and spend much of the runtime as shadowy figures rather than engaging characters. Convoluted Villain Backstory with Eric Sacks as an unnecessary intermediary between Shredder and the turtles, adding complexity that did not improve the story (01:10:14). Removing or significantly trimming Sacks' role was proposed as a way to streamline the narrative. Mismatch in Tone and Style was evident, with the movie trying to be serious and gritty while relying on CGI-heavy, unrealistic action sequences that lacked tangible physicality (35:42). The film's heavy use of CGI and complex mech suit for Shredder overshadowed traditional martial arts choreography that defines the franchise. Character and Design Issues The film's character portrayals and designs undermined the essence of the Ninja Turtles, alienating fans and harming engagement (28:35). Turtle Designs Were Widely Disliked for being oversized, grotesque, and overly detailed with "human teeth" that made them less relatable and more monstrous (29:50). Their giant size and bulletproof nature reduced the importance of their ninja skills and made fight scenes less believable. Complex textures and too many visual details caused action scenes to become "CGI mush," making it hard to focus on key movements. Character Imbalance and Focus on Raphael turned the movie into essentially a Raphael-centric story, sidelining the other turtles and undermining the team dynamic (56:20). Alan Ritchson's portrayal of Raphael was praised as the best casting and performance in the film. Other turtles like Leonardo and Donatello were underused; Michelangelo was poorly written as an overly sexualized and annoying character. April O'Neil's Role and Writing were criticized for being unconvincing and bloated, with her professional competence and motivations feeling unrealistic and distracting (26:00). The forced "chosen one" connection between April and the turtles was seen as unnecessary and cheapened her acceptance of them. Supporting Characters like Will Arnett's cameraman were noted as relatively decent additions, providing human perspective and some humor without overwhelming the story (48:42). Setting and Visual Context The movie's setting choices and visual style weakened the core appeal of the franchise, distancing it from the turtles' iconic New York City roots (43:58). Misplaced Setting Outside New York City for large portions of the movie conflicted with the turtles' identity as New York City teens and vigilantes (44:50). Much of the film occurs in an ambiguous upstate New York mansion and mountain, disconnected from the urban environment central to the turtles' story. This choice limited opportunities to showcase iconic city landmarks and the turtles' connection to their home turf. Visual Style Reflects 2010s Orange-Teal Trend, which while vibrant, was harsh and contributed to a stylized look that did not fit the tone of the movie (16:45). Snowboarding and Chase Sequences were seen as fun and reminiscent of video game-inspired action but felt out of place and disconnected from the turtles' core habitat (48:42). These sequences resembled arcade game levels rather than integrated story moments. Proposed Fixes and Editorial Improvements A major consensus was that the movie could be improved significantly by cutting down excess plot and focusing much earlier and more on the turtles themselves (01:09:02). Streamline April's Story and Cut Eric Sacks to reduce narrative bloat and confusing backstory (01:10:14). Compress April's investigation into one clear sequence, eliminating multiple instances of Foot Clan encounters and confusing plot threads. Remove or minimize Sacks to focus villainy on Shredder and the Foot Clan. Introduce the Turtles Sooner and Add More Teenage Interactions to showcase their personalities and team dynamics earlier in the movie (01:10:14). Incorporate scenes like the elevator banter to emphasize their teenage traits and humor. Sprinkle in more Foot Clan fights to build suspense and showcase ninja action throughout. Focus on Making the Final Third Action-Packed but Clear, allowing the action sequences to flow without unnecessary interruptions (01:10:14). Keep the fight choreography that works, such as the Shredder vs. Splinter sequence, while trimming excess. Possible Reshoots or Edits to downplay or rework problematic story elements like April's "chosen one" status and the lab origin flashbacks (01:19:47). Use existing footage more efficiently to maintain story coherence while trimming excess. Emphasize Fun and Character Chemistry earlier to avoid the film feeling "all tension" and "boring" (01:15:07). Add small moments of levity, camaraderie, and ninja antics before the big action scenes. Maintain Realistic Expectations about how much could be changed given the film's production timeline and 2014-era constraints (01:25:21). Cast and Performances Certain casting choices were praised while others detracted from the film's overall impact on character believability (03:51). Alan Ritchson as Raphael was widely considered the best fit and performance, capturing Raphael's classic loner and heartfelt traits well (51:05). His emotional speech and portrayal of Raphael's arc were highlights. Johnny Knoxville as Leonardo was underused and miscast, with his limited screen time failing to do justice to the character (53:34). Megan Fox's April O'Neil was critiqued for lacking investment and acting strength, which weakened the emotional core of her storyline (24:35). Will Arnett's Cameraman Character was a positive surprise, providing light humor and a grounded human viewpoint without dominating the narrative (48:42). Whoopi Goldberg's Role was underutilized and seen as wasted potential given her talent (28:35). Franchise and Cultural Context The film reflects the cultural and franchise environment of the early 2010s, impacting its creative choices and reception (14:07). 2014 Era Nerd Culture Not Fully Embraced, leading to awkward attempts at modernization and distancing from the core turtle identity (14:07). The movie's shame about being a Ninja Turtles film echoes similar issues seen in early Transformers films. Comparisons with Other Ninja Turtles Iterations show this movie as weaker, especially compared to its sequel and animated projects like Mutant Mayhem that clearly love the source material (02:41). The sequel "Turtles Out of the Shadows" was noted as far more fun and faithful. Discussion of the Franchise's Multi-Generational Appeal highlighted the turtles' ability to adapt but also underscored the risk of losing core essence through unnecessary changes (06:18). Audience Distrust and Over-Explanation reflects a production that did not trust viewers to accept the turtles as they are, leading to excessive exposition and forced justifications (18:04). Product Placement and Minor Details like Windows Phones on characters' devices were noted as subtle but fun touches (01:02:00). Robin is sick and has lost itThis week we're taking a detour from the usual political hellscape to cover something that is, underneath the celebrity packaging, the exact same story: who gets protected, who gets discarded, and how the machine that hands powerful men unlimited second acts is the same machine running everything else we cover on this show.Shia LaBeouf is thirty-nine years old and currently facing three counts of simple battery in New Orleans, including allegedly punching a bartender, dislocating someone's nose, and headbutting a third person while shirtless during a four-day Mardi Gras bar crawl. His attorney's defense was "frankly, being drunk on Mardi Gras is not a crime." That's the legal strategy.Simultaneously, FKA Twigs (the Grammy-nominated artist Tahliah Barnett) has filed a new lawsuit arguing that the NDA inside her 2025 sexual battery settlement with LaBeouf is illegal under California's STAND Act, and that after she said publicly she didn't feel safe, LaBeouf secretly filed arbitration proceedings to extract money from her for saying it. She hired Mathew Rosengart (the attorney who freed Britney Spears) and she is not seeking money. She is seeking the legal right to describe her own life. This episode: the full legal timeline from 2005 to 2026, the Mia Goth relationship from the 2012 set of Nymphomaniac to the 2024 Pasadena 911 call, to the method acting culture that celebrates self-harm and calls it genius, the Honey Boy credit, the Catholic conversion with full ambivalence, and the redemption arc as a structure that serves perpetrators more reliably than survivors.Plus: why this episode exists, and why the same system protecting Shia LaBeouf is the same one that fired Megan Fox for comparing Michael Bay to Hitler, buried Tig Notaro for being right about Louis C.K. too early, and made Monica Lewinsky the punchline of a generation while the president who was actually in the room got two hundred thousand dollars a speech.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/we-saw-the-devil-crime-political-analysis--4433638/support.Website: http://www.wesawthedevil.comPatreon: http://www.patreon.com/wesawthedevilDiscord: https://discord.gg/X2qYXdB4Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/WeSawtheDevilInstagram: http://www.instagram.com/wesawthedevilpodcast.

On episode 153, the gang attempts to escape The Island, Michael Bay's glossy 2005 action curio, which arrived sandwiched between the pyrotechnic bravado of Bad Boys II and the toy-store industrial complex known as Transformers. The film itself behaves like three movies crammed into a trench coat: dystopian sci-fi meditation, glossy chase spectacle, and existential identity crisis, all sprinting toward the same helicopter explosion. In this latest episode of the Big Shot Bob Podcast, hosts Robert Horry, Brandon Harper, and Rob Jenners dive headfirst into an action-packed discussion on the latest happenings in the NBA. The episode kicks off with a talk about a recent intense NBA brawl that saw Isaiah Stewart and several others facing suspensions. The guys share their thoughts on NBA fights, how the league's image has been cleaned up over the years, and the implications for the involved teams, particularly focusing on the Pistons' evolving identity as the 'bad boys' of the modern era. They also discuss the dramatic aftermath and the culture of physical play in today's NBA compared to previous generations.   Next, the crew delves into the NBA trade deadline aftermath, dissecting major trades such as James Harden's move to the Cavaliers and Darius Garland going to the Clippers. They analyze the impact of these trades on both teams in the short and long term. The conversation also covers other notable trades like Jonathan Kuminga's trade to the Hawks and Anthony Davis's surprising move to the Wizards. Amidst the trade-talk, there's speculation about Giannis Antetokounmpo's future and the possibility of him leaving the Bucks. There's excitement about Damian Lillard's return to the three-point contest and the prospects of other sharp shooters. Additionally, the hosts celebrate the Seattle Seahawks' Super Bowl victory while sharing personal anecdotes from their Super Bowl weekend, including Robert Horry's surprising visit to Michael Bay's house. The episode wraps up with a lively game of Shootout, where the hosts test their knowledge on NBA Finals MVPs and teams that have never won a Super Bowl.   00:00 Introduction and Podcast Kickoff 01:22 NBA Brawl Breakdown 08:05 NBA Trade Deadline Aftermath 09:03 Giannis Trade Speculations 10:24 James Harden Trade Analysis 14:57 LeBron James' Future 23:14 Anthony Davis to the Wizards 29:51 Utah Jazz Tanking Strategy 36:32 Shaq's Controversial Comments and Jazz's Tanking Strategy 37:48 All Star Weekend Highlights and Predictions 40:07 NBA Standings and Ketamine Controversy 42:12 Super Bowl Recap and Michael Bay's Party 49:41 Big Shot of the Week: Heroic 13-Year-Old Saves Family 51:52 Shootout Game

Our Celebrity News starts with a Welcome back to The Rizzuto Show, your favorite daily comedy show where deep philosophical questions last about 90 seconds before turning into chaos.Today's episode starts deceptively thoughtful: What genre is your life? Comedy? Horror? Rom-com? Greek tragedy? Straight-to-DVD disappointment? The crew breaks it down in the only way they know how — by roasting each other, name-dropping directors, and somehow landing on Tim Burton, Judd Apatow, Michael Bay, and Tommy Wiseau in the same breath. From there, things escalate fast. The gang debates the worst Super Bowl halftime show of all time, re-litigates Maroon 5's shirtless crimes against humanity, and tries (and fails) to agree on whether Bad Bunny, Kid Rock, or literally anyone else should be allowed near a halftime stage ever again. Spoiler: nobody wins. For you music nerds get fed too. KISS casually hits one billion YouTube views, Queen's touring future sparks debate, Aerosmith dreams are manifested aggressively, and a wild Paste Magazine “Top Guitarists of All Time” list sends the room into full disbelief when legends are left off and Prince reigns supreme. There's also real-world stuff mixed into the madness — heartfelt tributes, shocking news updates, and moments where the show accidentally becomes emotional before immediately undercutting it with jokes (as tradition demands).Basically, this daily comedy show has everything:Existential life questionsSuper Bowl halftime rageRock music historyQuestionable celebrity listsAccidental documentaries about being humanAnd the reminder that everyone's life is probably a comedy… just shot very poorlyIf you're here for a funny podcast, a daily show that refuses to stay on topic, or a comedy podcast that feels like your group chat came to life on the radio — congratulations, you're home.Stick around, subscribe, and prepare to question what genre your life is… while we absolutely do not fix ours.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MOSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

“These movies are not made for audiences.” - Steve, on DTS titles like this On our first episode of 2026 we're chatting about the direct-to-streaming, holiday-set sequel, The Family Plan 2! Why can't Wahlberg be icing dudes in this movie? Beyond that great Michael Bay doc that hasn't come out yet, are we still doing parkour in movies? Should Mark just start doing PVOD Secret Movies? How much of a boost does the on-location shooting give you? Does Kit Harington's character have an actual plan beyond the vague “power” dream? Why are we cramming Christmas into this film? And doesn't Michelle Monaghan deserve better than this? PLUS: The Transformers get down with some parkour too! The Family Plan 2 stars Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan, Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby, Reda Elazouar, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Sanjeev Baskar, and Kit Harington as Finn Clarke; directed by Simon Cellan Jones.
