I saw a headline all the way back to 1894 declaring that “nobody wants to work anymore”.  This is not a new problem.  If we're not careful, our negativity will breed a culture where work is seen as… Cursed A means to an end  As a lifeless 9 to 5, tryin' to make a livin'  Hallucinating that it's 5 o'clock somewhere Something to “take and shove it” Just another Manic Monday  Work is deeper than that, more powerful than that Work is an opportunity… Proverbs 12:11 - “A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies has no sense.” We say, “nobody wants to work anymore!”...when in reality they just don't want to work for you because you are grumpy! Instead, we need to build  A CULTURE WHERE PEOPLE DO WISH TO DO HARD THINGS! There will always be a mountain to climb in building a culture of intentionality within your business.   Business is hard…running a business is even harder.   Let's stop pretending that our circumstance is unique…because business is hard, business can also be good. So what is the mountain of our time?   Dr. Tim Elmore would argue that one primary element is the unprecedented generational diversity, we are experiencing because it is the number one topic that he is asked to speak on as a researcher of youth culture.   How do you mix the soil of culture so that it is rich enough to handle the diversity of generational seeds being planted?  How do we mix that culture so that it makes the next generation…ALL generations, excited to work? FIRST, WHAT IS CULTURE?  Culture is not a business term…it is a biology term Culture is a Petri Dish: what goes in the dish is what grows out of the dish Good in…good out (give examples) Bad in…bad out (give examples) The culture of your business is a DIRECT RESULT of the ingredients that you allow to enter the mash bill. Here are 4 ingredients to mix in the cocktail of a healthy business culture that the next generation will be excited to work in… FAM Time: Team Meeting Must have a means of communication (Imagine if the underwater cables were cut between the US and Europe?) STORY: Story written by Capt. George O. Squier in an article for The National Geographic Magazine in Jan, 1901 said, “the submarine (cable) is a powerful instrument of war, more powerful, indeed, than battleships and cruisers, since by its wonderful and instantaneous, communications of thought, it brings distant countries (team members) and colonies (teams) together in sympathy, which is the only true and permanent tie.” A culture that is missing the nutrient of human connection When communication is choppy, infrequent, unpredictable, or limited …you have missed opportunities and Low Morale Thought, ideas, implementation, updating process, engagement  Clarity, input, teamwork  The opportunity for sympathy and empathy…which is the “only true and permanent tie” When communication is repetitious, predictable, and meaningful…you have →  The second thing that the next generation needs in order to work and lead?  GET “LIT”: Line-Item Training Every sports team, every military command has one thing in common…if they aren't playing a game or fighting  battle…they are practicing and preparing for one Your vacation policy? How to properly perform an electrical walk? How to post a bid schedule? How to job cost? How to identify an ideal client? How to properly dress?   When was the last time you trained your team on… Admit the “L” The hallmark leadership trait of the older generation is defined by… Stuffy Know it all  A “Chotch” - someone who is unpleasant to be around Find the Spotify playlist of someone younger than you and commit to listen  Eminem - lose yourself in the moment, you own it you never ever let it go Post Malone - I was patient, aye, oh, Now I can scream that we made it, Now everyone, everywhere I go, they say 'gratulations…I pick up the rock and I ball baby, I'm looking for someone to call baby, but right now I've got a situation… Start learning new things Self-deprecation goes a LOOOOOONG way among a younger culture  ACTION → ask someone younger than you for their playlist, listen, and share what you heard STAN the culture calendar “Stan” - be obsessed but not in a creepy way The culture calendar is a business playsheet with scripted plays. It is simple to build and will require you to think through a few different categories. First, layout the months and dates by weeks at the top of your culture calendar. Then, on the vertical column on the left hand side you will break this down into different categories.  We recommend starting with weekly, monthly, quarterly, twice-annually, and annually.   In other words, what are the “business ingredients” you wish to make part of your culture each week, month, quarter, etc. You don't need to waste time and energy grumbling about how “nobody wants to work anymore”.  They just don't want to work for grumps…they want to give all they've got to a great culture by… FAM Time: Team Meeting GET “LIT”: Line-Item Training Admit the “L” STAN the culture calendar

If you are comparing your 2022 to 2020 and 2021 you may want to pause. Standing here at the early sunset hours of 2022 we are feeling a very real metaphor. It goes like this. During 2020 and 2021 many of our businesses were barreling down the business highway at 90 mph winding hot at 10,000 RPMs. Today, it already feels like a massive slowdown, and it has been.  Let's not lose perspective, though… instead of going from 90 mph to 0…we are now riding down the highway at a more sustainable, more comfortable pace of 70 mph, and the good news is that we are only running at 5,000 RPMs. In other words, it is taking far less effort to go just a little bit slower and start to get some breathing room.  The problem is that our human minds have grown accustomed to the speed, breathlessness, chaos, and cash flow of the past two years and we don't know how to mentally or emotionally throttle our expectations, let alone our spending habits. New norms have emerged over the past two years; pricing volatility, material, and logistics inconsistencies, marketing and sales simplicities, and probably the most noticeable internally is that your employees want more money for the same roles and while demanding more flexibility and meaning.  Employees want their business life to fuel their personal lives, and not the other way around.   Historically, business owners have tried to solve headaches by shooting one particular shiny bullet…sales, sales, sales. If we could just get more work then we would have more cash to pay higher fees, higher premiums, higher wages, higher demands, and higher expectations.   That is an infinite and empty treadmill leading to the same destination over and over.   I am going to walk you through the four steps you need to take to navigate your business in 2023 in a powerful way.   The first step in building your business plan for 2023 is making time to fill out your Vision Story. In 2023, where vision is not written down, people will indeed scatter, and that scattering of people will further scatter your mind and thoughts into a web of frustration. Instead, follow the ancient Jewish wisdom that says, “write the vision down so that those who read it may run.” Vision is clarifying and vision is separating.  When you cast vision you know who is bought in and who is not.  Some will run towards your vision and some away from your vision. You will be tempted to scoot on past writing your vision down and instead make up some silly excuse in your head that either, “I don't need this” or “oh yeah, we've got something like that”.   We've made crafting your vision simple.   Seven categories to begin working through, and you will likely need to make about an hour or so of time for this powerful and important exercise.  Notice I said the word exercise… it's work and it's healthy. Term/Time Family/Freedom Financial Product/Service Team Client Culture The second necessary tool in your 2023 business planning toolkit is the sobering Delegation Roadmap. Andrew Carnegie said, "No person will make a great business who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit." John Maxwell said, “If you want to do a few small things right, do them yourself. If you want to do great things and make a big impact, learn to delegate.” Discovering delegation will make time for what matters most in three ways:  It Empowers others to put out the fires It transfers your authority to them It multiplies your effort The moment that you stop delegating, or choose to not delegate and empower is the moment that you have chosen to have a job instead of owning a business. The third necessary tool in your 2023 business planning toolkit is the non-negotiable Weekly Schedule. You feel busy but not productive because you have little to no boundaries. I recently heard Lance Golinghorst articulate that we all have access to three major scarce resources: time, energy, and attention. Attention is indivisible.  It is well-researched that multitasking doesn't work.  As I am writing and reading this, I should not be brushing my teeth or checking my bank balance. Energy is renewable (I can generate more energy), and transferable (I can give you energy and you can give me energy). The real wake-up call is in regard to our time.  Time is non-renewable (we cannot make more of it), and it is not transferable (you cannot give yours to me). You go into each week with a defined, finite allotment of time.  Either you put boundaries throughout your day roping off all of the tasks and responsibilities, or we will do it for you.   If you do it, it allows you to maximize your scarce resources of time, energy, and attention.  If we do it for you, then we will devour your time, energy, and attention. You can make excuses as to why it won't work in the specific role you are in.  We love you, but your role is not a special unicorn or snowflake.  Own your role by owning the boundaries for your role and then share those boundaries with us so we can support you. Finally, for a robust 2023 business plan, you will benefit from building and implementing a Culture Calendar.   The culture of your business is not happenstance...it is not an accident, and no luck is required. The culture of your business is a DIRECT RESULT of the ingredients that you allow to enter the mash bill. If you allow the ingredients of unpredictability, inconsistency, minimal communication, lack of process, lack of mission, gossip, and no values in decision-making, then the result will be a business that has notes of unpredictability, lack of process, and the like. If, however, you allow only the ingredients of consistent communication, accountability, humor, reinforced process, and clarity in vision, mission, and values, then the result will be a business that has notes of the same. Again, the four tools that will change the game for you and your team in 2023. I model these effects in Guesstimate using expert surveys and interviews, forecasts made by Good Judgment Project superforecasters, academic research, and media coverage of international relations, along with academic research into the effects of nuclear war and nuclear weapons policy. There are many determinants that factor into the number of people that would die as a direct result of nuclear detonations during a US-Russia nuclear exchange. I consider the following six factors the most important. They make up the key parameters in my model: The targeting strategy (i.e. what kinds of targets will each country attack?) The number of military facilities each country might target Whether each country would also target cities, in addition to military facilities If they were to target cities, the number of cities each country might target The sizes of the nuclear weapons in each country's nuclear arsenal The population size of the cities that might be targeted during an exchange When I take all of these factors into account, I expect that we'd see a total of 51 million deaths caused directly by nuclear detonations on military and civilian targets in NATO countries and Russia (90% confidence interval: 30 million — 75 million deaths). December 8 2019 Update In light of feedback from Carl Schulman, Kit Harris, MichaelA, David Denkenberger, Topher Brennan, and others, I've made several revisions to this post that are now reflected in the text, figures, and estimates in the body of this post. The original post can still be found here. The changes that had the largest bearing on my results included: Changing the way I estimate the number of nuclear weapons that would be used in a countervalue nuclear exchange in expectation so that I don't accidentally truncate the tails of the distributions (details here and here). Generating a formula that can be directly entered into Guesstimate to estimate the number of deaths caused by a countervalue nuclear exchange rather than using a simplified formula to estimate the parameters for triangular distributions that are then entered into Guesstimate (details here and here). After making these revisions, my estimate of the number of people that would be killed directly by nuclear detonations during a US-Russia nuclear exchange is about 51 million (90% confidence interval: 30 million — 75 million deaths) — ~43% more than my original estimate of 35 million (90% confidence interval: 23 million — 50 million deaths). The impacts that each individual change had on my results can be seen here. I've also added a bit more discussion on the probability that a countervalue nuclear exchange would escalate, and sensitivity analysis so that people who disagree with my views on this can see how the results change under more pessimistic assumptions. My sensitivity analysis shows that, if you're more pessimistic than me about the probability of countervalue targeting and escalation, around 88 million people would be killed in expectation during a US-Russia nuclear exchange (details here and here). Where you are is a direct result of the decisions you have made up to this point in your life. - Anonymous Whether we like it or not, the chair we're sitting in, the computer or phone we're on, the coffeeshop or house or school we're sitting in is a choice we've made. Maybe we chose to work at this school 15 years ago and we've chosen to stay for this long. Maybe we decided to work at this company that gave us this phone that we're using to read and work on. If this morning you decided to sleep in, and now you're scrambling to get to work on time, that decision was yours and yours alone. Maybe you have a baby, or had a family emergency you decided needed your attention in the middle of the night. Sometimes it may feel like ‘I have no choice'. The reality is, oh, yes you do. You've chosen to take care of that child, you decided to respond to your family emergency. You may not have thought much about them, but you certainly decided that you would respond. As adults, we are responsible for ALL of our decisions. From breakfast, to the color of car we drive (if we're going to drive a car at all), to our occupations, and who we date or marry, in most cases, no one has FORCED us into any of these situations. If you are a coach, you DECIDED to be a coach. I'm pretty confident no one threatened you or your family and said ‘if you don't coach, something bad will happen to you or them'. You could fill in ‘coach' with any profession. It's likely that at some point, you chose what you're doing and have since decided to stick with it. As coaches, we don't always get to decide the kids who will be in our programs or on our teams. We DO decide how we're going to interact with our team though. We DO decide what we will hold our players accountable to and what we will tolerate as their coaches and mentors. We do decide how to condition our kids, how to reward or punish them, and how we'll express our belief in them. We often brush over these decisions. We often coach how we were coached. I challenge you to look at your next practice plan and write down next to each drill WHY you're deciding to focus on that drill. Why you're conditioning them the way you are. WHY you'll let them pick their groups or if you'll assign them. If you are not happy with your team's performance, roll back into the decisions you've made with them in the last year, month, week, and day. Are those decisions reflective of the environment you want to cultivate? If not, what would you do differently to get the results you wanted?

And, I sold over $17,000 in products in a few short months as a DIRECT RESULT of NETWORKING offline. Here was the key though - I learned and MASTERED a few key things - One - I learned how to create a ROCK SOLID Commercial (elevator pitch, etc!) Second, I learned how to "sell without selling!" (What the WHAT?!?!?! Yes, this can be done!) Third, I perfected how to get my business in front of ALMOST ANYONE with just ONE key  question. Fourth, I became a MASTER at follow up and building relationships BEFORE the sale. Fifth, AND PROBABLY THE BEST PART - I mastered how to bring social media (Facebook and LinkedIn, specifically) into the equation and build MUCH faster relationships and create interest in ME and then my business. I was recently approached to teach this at a training event, and it went REALLY well. And, so I decided to do what I LOVE and that is bring it online so everyone can learn these skills. I want to share a little of my past week. Monday, I had an appointment to sign up a new client in my business. I chiropractic office who wants to do a  better jog remembering birthdays and appreciating their clients, and want a little Social Media training, too. I plugged the address into Siri and set off. What an ADVENTURE. I ended up in the sticks, and felt sure I was lost, but decided to do my best and enjoy the sheer beauty of the adventure. It was fabulous, and I arrived right on time. The peaceful drive also gave way to a phone call with a Real Estate agent in Idaho, who ended up being my latest team partner. That was adventure, opportunity and reward. The client meeting went great and I am getting them launched this week. Another adventure, opportunity and reward. I met some great people, too. Tuesday, I was invited to share my business and products at a Chamber of Commerce Lunch and Learn. It went great and I picked up some solid business leads, as well as had a great video shot and shared on my Facebook wall. You can see it over at my Facebook profile. Link in the show notes. Thursday, I was invited to help so video interviews for several business in Arizona for part of a networking colleagues new project, Who is Arizona.  I debated cancelling, as I am not as far along as I would like to be on a project I am working on with my sales store and products, Facebook Ads and my marketing funnels. And so the thought of a day shot was not exciting. But, I also knew it would be good exposure and get me in front of some highly connected people. Boy, am I ever glad I went! I am now a prominent part of that website, with my face and voice in a lot if videos. I also was able to create a professional, 3 minute video of my own that I can use on my own site and in promotions! Very exciting stuff. I also shared a 15 minute presentation to all of the businesses on High Tech/High Touch Marketing, how to generate endless leads. I have several prospects to follow up with!
