PlayStation is booming, at least depending on how you look at things. On the one hand, Sony's annual financial results are incredibly strong: PlayStation drove more revenue last year than any gaming entity ever has in the entire history of the industry. Meanwhile, PS5 will surpass 80 million units sold soon, and has become the default console for most players this generation. But there's a downside; indeed, Sony is doing all of this damage with one hand tied behind its back, as major exclusive releases have slowed down to a trickle, while the level of behind-the-scenes mismanagement becomes ever-starker. As we were wrapping our episode up, word dropped that first party studio Haven lost its founder and biggest name, Jade Raymond, apparently after a tumultuous testing of Fairgames, boding poorly for the future of that product and team. Maybe this entire initiative was a bad idea, after all? Plus: Death Stranding 2 goes gold, Stellar Blade is coming to PC, rumors percolate about a Grand Theft Auto IV remaster, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Will Final Fantasy XVII be turn-based? What does the 11th hour saving of Giant Bomb mean for the future of games media? Could Game Pass' undeniable value proposition begin peeling away the Sony hardcore? Who should we cast Obesaga on, so that we can have an overweight cast member for representation's sake? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. The Dukes get ready to rip and tear through another set of video games news and releases! Joining us is honorary Duke, Gene Park, to talk about the latest game out of iD Software in DOOM: The Dark Ages. It's the third entry in iD's modern reboot of the franchise and, as always, they've taken a new approach to things. DOOM: The Dark Ages places a shield in your hands and asks you to "stand and fight." How does this feel in comparison to DOOM Eternal's lightning fast combat or the more deliberate nature of DOOM 2016? It finds itself in the middle as all three Dukes have different takes on this one. Its combat, story, enemy variety, pacing, traversal, level design. All of them speak to us (or not) in ways that really highlight this isn't iD's best DOOM, but it's not their worst. It finds itself in the middle and, by the finale, feels like the series has run out of gas. So, what does this team of talented FPS developers do next? Is it time for Quake? Naturally, we discuss all of that and much more. Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. 0:00:00 - Intro0:16:50 - Health is Wealth0:31:02 - GTA 6 Update0:34:38 - Should Xbox have held the Gears announcement?0:48:15 - Fallout Season 2 drops in December1:00:06 - DOOM: The Dark Ages physical copy debacle1:10:28 - Oblivion Remastered's continuous issues1:23:26 - Xbox returning to back compat focus?1:37:54 - GTA IV Remaster inbound?1:46:43 - Mafia: The Old Country release date and pricing1:54:21 - Will Borderlands 4 jump for $80?2:07:47 - Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra has been delayed to 20262:11:09 - Capcom is doing better than we understand2:21:09 - Square Enix's rough financials2:30:39 - Warner Bros Games revenue is in the tubes2:32:13 - Doom: The Dark Ages3:33:16 - What We're Playing4:00:05 - Game Pass Pick Of The Week Learn more about your ad choices. Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! What's the best Doom game? Well, that might be a trick question. In this episode, Cam argues that ‘The Ancient Gods' — the overlooked two-part expansion to Doom Eternal — might just be the best entry in the franchise. With massive story implications, fascinating gameplay evolutions, and a running length that rivals all the modern mainline entries, The Ancient Gods is a stealth sequel in the proud tradition of Halo: ODST and Gears 5: Hivebusters. Rip, tear, and spread the word! LINKS: Patreon, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram Feedback & Theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com
Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Five years after the wildly divisive ‘Doom Eternal' was released, Cam has given the game a second chance — and fallen in love with it. This discussion charts his history with the franchise, the frustrations of that first playthrough, and the unique combat rhythm that turned a simple demon killing formula into a wildly addictive white knuckle chess match.

They immediately recognize the vastness of the topic, agreeing that it could easily span multiple episodes. AI's influence isn't just limited to game development—it's becoming a part of everyday life, from phone algorithms to even traffic lights. The discussion touches on how AI is already embedded in gaming in ways people might not expect, shaping both development processes and gameplay experiences. Nick playfully warns against the dangers of recursive AI implementation, joking about the possibility of a time bubble ripping open or a gun that fires typewriters, adding a bit of levity to the conversation. Ultimately, the hosts decide to dedicate more time to the topic in their next episode, while still covering any major news. AI's role in gaming is evolving rapidly, and they're eager to explore its implications further.
Before the panic over social media—but after the panic over “video nasties”—was the panic over violent videogames. Was Pac-Man causing little Johnny so much frustration that he'd take it out on his siblings with his fists? Was Doom secretly training little Timmy to be a school shooter? You don't hear so much about videogames and violence any more, but if you look at the studies (and the critiques of those studies) there's a lot to learn about where science can go wrong. In this episode of The Studies Show—in addition to, if we're honest, just spending quite a lot of time talking about videogames—Tom and Stuart ask whether there's any decent evidence that gaming can make people more aggressive. The Studies Show is brought to you by Works in Progress magazine—a journal of underrated ideas to make the world a better place. In the episode we discussed a recent essay on cruise ships, and the surprising (and continual) improvements over the years. Next, the roll of the dice ushers in the "Council of Dads" segment, where the guys explore ways to plan quality time with your spouse. The fates then reward listeners with some classic bad dad jokes, including a rare contribution from Charles. The humor keeps rolling as Joe introduces a new segment called "Fatherly Advice," where the duo attempts to listen to a project Devocite has been working on. However, technical difficulties leave us in suspense, promising a conclusion in next week's episode. Finally, the boys wrap up the episode with the "Daddy tell me a story" segment. Joe recounts a mischievous tale of "hacking" his cousin's phone to extract some personal photos. This story leads to a crucial discussion on avoiding scams and staying safe on public Wi-Fi.
