Her approach to this latest challenge is truly inspiring. Themes discussed include: Gen's experience of the Tokyo Olympics. How Gen has grown through adversity and utilised her mindset to bring joy to the process. How to adapt when you can't do what you love. Emma Jeffcoat is an Australian Olympic Triathlete who made her debut at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. In this episode Emma discusses the poignant issue of comments that can destroy athletes and candidly shares some of the commentary that she's received throughout her developing triathlon career and how that's affected her over the years psychologically, health wise and performance wise. What's so great about Emma's story is how she is going from strength to strength in showing those critics that when it comes to performance, ill-informed commentary and beliefs around body composition have no place. Jenny Valentish, Author and Journalist, has just released a new book “Everything Harder than Everyone Else”, why some of us push our bodies to extremes. Jenny is the author of the acclaimed Woman of Substances, a regular contributor to The Sydney Morning Herald and the Saturday Paper and a former Editor of Timeout Melbourne, and Triple J's J Mag. When Jenny wrote her book about addiction, she noticed that people who treated drug taking like an Olympic sport would often hurl themselves into a pursuit such as a marathon or ultra-marathon upon getting sober. What stayed constant was the need to push their boundaries. The book follows people doing the things that most people couldn't, wouldn't or shouldn't. The interviewees in Jenny's book lead Jenny on a journey through psychology, endurance and the power of obsession, revealing what we can learn about the human condition. I'd call this a handbook into analysing why you do what you do as an endurance athlete. This week we're sitting down with Manon Carpenter and Tommy Wilkinson to chat all about their new film project, 'Trails on Trial'. Find out how the project came about in the first place, and hear about their experiences as they travelled around the country to chat with trail builders and landowners. With rising user numbers across all outdoors groups, trail access is under more pressure than ever before. Manon and Tommy found some great examples of where mountain bikers have been able to work together with landowners to create incredible trails like those in the Tweed Valley. This is a really positive outlook on what can be done to keep our awesome wild trails up and running, with some really useful thoughts on what all of us can do to help. This week I'm joined by coach to the mountain bike stars, Alan Milway. We sat down to chat about the work that he does to help some of the World's best downhill racers be at the top of their game on race day. Have the demands of downhill racing changed? Are the risks increasing? Do changes in bikes and technology drive changes in physical requirements? Is data important and what are the key things to measure? This was a really interesting discussion for me and it definitely made me think about a few things differently. I hope it gives you something to think about too. So sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Alan Milway. You can follow Alan on Instagram @alanmilway or head to his website at milway.co.uk. Amy shares around how we can optimise our skeletal or bone health across our lifespan, what can we do pre puberty, what can we do as adults and what can we do post menopause and as Amy states MANopause for the blokes in order to ensure we have optimal skeletal health in lower likelihood or mobility associated with low bone density or poor bone health such as osteopenia or osteoporosis. Amy works alongside former featured expert of the show Professor Belinda Beck. Amy has outputted greater than 20 publications in her burgeoning research career. In one landmark study, which she co collaborated with her Griffith University Research colleagues, Professor Belinda Beck and Associate Professor Ben Weeks was called the LIFTMOR M trial, this trial explored the effects of supervised high intensity resistance and impact training on the bone geometry and strength in middle aged and older men with low bone mass. Amy and her research team at Griffith University Men's Health Institute discovered a real dearth in the literature around the role of exercise in helping men with low bone mass post MANopause. Amy outlines the role that exercise plays in terms of adapting our skeletons, the keys in optimizing our skeletal health pre puberty, why it's important to look at maintaining maximising bone health as an adult and then ways that we can fight the decline post menopause or MANopause in terms of our bone health. Amy shares why high intensity low repetition exercise is so important and why high repetition low resistance exercise doesn't produce the same positive results on bone adaptation. Amy encourages us that it is never too late to improve our bone health. Innes Graham was one of the fastest young mountain bike racers on the downhill circuit, who left the scene after suffering a horrible crash at the Lenzerheide world cup in 2016. Leaving behind the buzz and adrenalin of racing left Innes with a gap in his life, which he found hard to fill. This lead to struggles with his mental health. We sat down to find out about his rise through the sport, the impact that crash had on his life and how he's rebuilt himself by reconnecting with mountain biking. Albeit, in a slightly different guise. I'd like to thank Innes for being open and honest about how leaving racing impacted him. This is an area that we don't hear much about, but which is a big issue across many competitive sports. So sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Innes Graham. You can follow Innes via his various Instagram accounts @innesgrahambike, @innesgrahamphoto and @ilgfoto. If you'd like your fix of drum & bass, Innes has recently uploaded a mix here.
