This week joining our new Awesome host and Filmmaker Mia Mullarkey for a very special chat is Filmmaker Myles O'Reilly. Fni Wrapchat is mixed by Bedford, Produced by the Headstuff Podcast Network and Sponsored by Film Equipment hire and Wildcard Distribution. Myles O'Reilly is a musician, composer and filmmaker from Dublin, Ireland. Since first lifting a camera in 2010, multi tasking O'Reilly has filmed, directed and edited over 100 music video promo's and 20+ music documentaries of Irish musicians at home and abroad, some of which include Glen Hansard, Villagers, Imelda May, Lisa O'Neill, Ye Vagabonds, Sinead O'Connor and Lisa Hannigan alongside other International artists such as Hollywood sound track virtuoso Ernst Reijseger, Icelandic artists Soléy, Múm and Amiina, US soul phenomenon Janelle Monae and UK folk trio The Staves. Early life as a working musician began for Myles in 2003 with the band Juno Falls. Signed for two albums by Sony UK and then V2 records, Juno Falls disbanded in 2010. Ten years later and in a global pandemic lockdown, Myles returned to making music and has since composed, recorded and released a plethora of works in the ‘ambient' music genre under the moniker Indistinct chatter. Since beginning a Pateron account in 2018 enabling followers to fund his film projects, O'Reilly's camera lens is increasingly more focused on discovering and supporting little-known emerging artists, to help “represent some of the most talented but hard to pigeonhole musical visionaries in Ireland today”. Now almost a full time vocation, his efforts to seek out and endorse new music extends to the curation of an annual rising-artist stage at the renown Body&Soul festival, and the production of a critically acclaimed web series This Ain't No Disco, co-created with eminent Irish broadcaster Donal Dineen of ‘No Disco' fame. This is a chance for you to help out with the running costs of the podcast, if you feel like you get a lot out of my interviews you can be a part of it by donating a small amount of money. I will be creating one extra monthly show specifically for my patrons. This is either an interview with a musician I know from the jazz scene or I also create episodes where I listen back to previous shows and chat about some key points that my guests bring up. There are so many great ideas and concepts that these amazing musicians bring up and I would like to share with you some of my favourites! Jazz Violin Classes I am running some very successful and busy zoom sessions at the moment to help people get into playing jazz, its a great thing to get yourself stuck into whilst you wait for your gigs to start again. If you want and info on these sessions email bookings@mattholborn.com
Thelonious Monk once said "play what you want and let the public pick up on what you are doing even if it does take them 15, 20 years". Luckily, he lived long enough to become fully embraced and celebrated before his passing. However, it's after his death that his music has really become central to the jazz canon. To mark the thirty-seventh anniversary of his demise, on 17 February 1982, this week we feature a very diverse range of renditions of his masterpieces. The playlist includes Cootie Williams, Paul Motian, Carmen McRae, Georg Gräwe, Duck Baker, Allen Toussaint, Charlie Haden, Jim Hall, Gianluca Petrella, Lindsey Horner, Brad Mehldau, Jason Moran, Vijay Iyer, Gary Thomas, Quincy Jones, Miles Okazaki, Frank Kimbrough, Thomas Chapin, Ran Blake, Jeanne Lee, Tronzo Trio, Steve Lacy, Charlie Rouse, Barry Harris, Ernst Reijseger, Thelonious Monk.
The compositions that we refer to as "jazz standards" were the pop songs of their time, before gradually developing into mainstays of the jazz repertoire. This week we focus on jazz interpretations of today's popular music, with renditions of the songs of artists ranging from Marvin Gaye to Sonic Youth, from Prince to Led Zeppelin, from Ray Charles to Paul Simon, from Donald Fagen to Bob Dylan and more. The playlist includes: John Scofield, Paul Desmond, Cannonball Adderley, Erik Friedlander, Sidsel Endresen & Bugge Wesseltoft, The New York Composers Orchestra, Joe Pass, Donald Byrd, Bill Frisell, Malcom Braff, Jewels and Binoculars, Vincent Peirani, Chris Lightcap, Bill Evans, Stefano Bollani, Júlio Resende, Nels Cline, Ernst Reijseger & Franco D'Andrea, Etienne Charles. Detailed playlist available at https://spinitron.com/radio/index.php?station=rfb&playlist=8093#here
One episode was not enough, so we needed more time to cover the South African scene. This week we look back at an earlier phase of the history of jazz in South Africa, focusing on some foundational bands and musicians, and the musicians they inspired both in South African and elsewhere. The playlist includes music by Winston Mankunku Ngozi, The Manhattan Brothers, Hugh Masekela & The Zulus, Johnny Fourie, The Musical "King Kong", The Jazz Epistles, Dollar Brand, Ernst Reijseger, McCoy Mrubata & Greg Hadjiyorki Georgiades, Hotep Idris Galeta, Mario Pavone, Bheki Mseleku, Jean Toussaint, Alan Skidmore featuring Amampondo, Julian Arguelles feat. the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, Django Bates & Steve Argüelles, Loose Tubes. The detailed playlist is available at: https://spinitron.com/radio/playlist.php?station=rfb&month=Jun&year=2018&playlist=6899#here Photo credit: Jürgen Schadeberg

Zo iemand was Luc."
