The violent insurrection against our nation’s Capitol building this month pulled an ugly truth to the surface, one that’s been hiding in plain sight for decades. White supremacist extremism is widespread, deep-rooted and a major threat to our security. In his inaugural address on Wednesday, President Joe Biden named white supremacy as a danger to our unity and vowed to defeat it. But law enforcement and government agencies have refused to acknowledge the full scope of the problem, especially when it appears within their own ranks. Will the attack earlier this month motivate the new administration to take this threat more seriously? Trymaine Lee sits down with Erroll Southers, a former federal agent and an expert in homegrown extremism at the University of Southern California. Southers lays out how white supremacist extremism was fostered over decades in this country, and the steps President Biden can take to begin to address the crisis. Further Reading: Biden sworn in as president, calls on Americans to 'end this uncivil war' of political division The Trump-fueled riot shocked America. To some, it was a long time coming.

And when you do, about a third of them come back with retroactive backpay.” –Erroll Southers The Tight Rope Episode #13On community review boards: “Why is that such a horrible thing to say to a police department? Why can’t it be that the very people that you’re policing have some say in their reception of your services?” –Tricia Rose The Tight Rope Episode #13“In the last ten years, we’ve had more domestic attacks here in this country by white supremacists and white nationalists than any other group. White nationalist groups, last year, increased for the second straight year 55% since 2017. The FBI finally had to label that threat a national threat priority. They were in denial.” –Erroll Southers The Tight Rope Episode #13“COVID has been the perfect environment for these extremist organizations to recruit and radicalize and share their message. They’re doing it under the guise of pushing back against the government overreach to make you wear a mask, make you stay at home.” –Erroll Southers The Tight Rope Episode #13“Start talking to the mayor. Start talking to the council. What’s the money being spent on? Are there any metrics that are being looked at with regards to how successful they are?” –Erroll Southers The Tight Rope Episode #13“What do you do when everywhere you look up you run into a different pharaoh? Well, at that point, you just say to yourself, I refuse to be a spectator. I’m going to be a participant. Therefore, I’m going to learn how to love, fight, laugh more adequately, effectively to pass on a tradition to a younger generation.” –Dr. Cornel West The Tight Rope Episode #13  “There’s potential for transforming what it means to treat Black people with dignity and decency if we can cultivate and somehow separate whiteness from the national consciousness.” –Tricia Rose The Tight Rope Episode #13“The problem is in order to reach that kind of policy we got to have multiracial coalitions, and if those racial coalitions are weak because of white supremacy and they associate dealing with poverty with dealing with Black people, then the racism makes it difficult to ever deal with their own poverty too. And that’s the catch-22 that we see over and over again in our society. And that’s the definition of insanity as well as a certain spiritual sickness.” –Dr. Cornel West The Tight Rope Episode #13“I don’t mind being profoundly patriotic about Aretha Franklin.” –Dr. Cornel West The Tight Rope Episode #13 Resources MentionedProsecuteKillerCops.org  Stay Connected:Cornel WestWebsite: www.cornelwest.comTwitter: @CornelWestFacebook: Dr. Cornel WestInstagram: @BrotherCornelWest Linktree: Cornel West  Tricia RoseWebsite: www.triciarose.comLinkedIn: Tricia RoseTwitter: @ProfTriciaRoseFacebook: Tricia RoseInstagram: @ProfTriciaRoseYoutube: Professor Tricia Rose  Erroll SouthersWebsite: errollsouthers.comTwitter: @esouthersHVELinkedIn: Erroll Southers  The Tight RopeWebsite: thetightropepodcast.com Instagram: @thetightropepodTwitter: @thetightropepodFacebook: The Tight Rope Pod This episode was produced and managed by Spkerbox Media in collaboration with Podcast Laundry

Militant groups, domestic terrorists and white supremacists (they play in the same little league division) are all finding that the rise in discrimination and hate crimes against Asian-Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic is helping their cause. In fact, they are capitalizing on the hatred. Some are going beyond Asians and blaming their old "go-to" groups such as Jews and Muslims for the virus. This is both a domestic and global phenomenon. How well does The Last Jedi fit into the Star Wars franchise? How does this new film show how culture has changed since the first film (A New Hope, 1977)? Our talented panel discuss these questions and more in their nerdy discussion of the continuing saga of Luke, Leia, Kylo, Rey, Poe, Finn, and new characters we meet along the way. How might our own biases distort the way we view the storytelling?  Find out the journey our panelists took, featuring host Erroll Southers and guests Alessandro Ago, Carla Della Gatta, and Lt. Col. Olivia Nelson. Let us know what you think of the film and our conversation at Facebook or Twitter. Director Dee Rees' new film, Mudbound, follows two southern families before, during, and after World War II. One family is white, one black. Centering on the complex relationships between the two families, the film explores how different generations dealt with societal changes which inevitably followed the war. The multiple narrators bring a sense of both internal and external character development as the events unfold. Of the novel, Barbara Kingsolver said, "Her characters walked straight out of 1940s Mississippi and into the part of my brain where sympathy and anger and love reside, leaving my heart racing. They are with me still."  Strong female characters ground the story as it tells of the challenges returning soldiers with different world views as they return to family and a small Mississippi community that hasn't weathered the storms and triumphs they have seen half a world away. Listen to this conversation on this ensemble film about war at home and abroad. Warning: *spoilers!* Find out what our panelists think, featuring host Erroll Southers and guests Alex Ago, Lt. Col. We go indepth on the mass shooting in Las Vegas, the worst in modern U.S. history.  Dan Savage and his friends were at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival last night, just 10 feet from the stage when shots rang out.  Terrorism expert Erroll Southers talks about security for soft targets and how social media apparently made the situation worse.  One psychiatrist says survivors of the mass shooting will suffer from PTSD as well as other forms of trauma.  Concert-goer Jacob Roy and his friends didn't run from the scene--they stayed to help others.  What is it like for doctors and other medical personnel to deal with mass casualties? In American Swastika: Inside the White Power Movement's Hidden Spaces of Hate (2nd edition), Pete Simi and Robert Futrell look at the white power movement. Over 15 years of interviews allow the authors to use real stories to focus on white power families and the different ways the white power movement indoctrinates the next generation of white power warriors.  We discuss the different types of groups, the different gateways people take into the movement, the ties that bind them, the family life, the "safe spaces" that bring them together and form deep bonds between members. We also discuss the important role safe spaces play, and the role they play within the larger cultural context today. Taking away the freedom to express themselves would have catastrophic consequences. What is the big picture of extremist violence in the United States? What are the things we, as citizens, can and should do to combat hatred and violence?  For links to some of the things we discuss today: https://bedrosian.usc.edu/bookclub/american-swastika

Wonder Woman is finally on the big screen! Raised on an island secluded from the world, Diana trained harder than any Amazon before her. Taught that the world of man was corrupted by Ares, the God of War, Diana sees an opportunity to kill Ares and set the world right after a pilot crashes on the island. She journeys into the world of man, accompanying Steve Trevor into the "war to end all wars." Soon, Diana learns that humankind is more complicated than the myths she knew. After dozens of superhero films, has director Patty Jenkins revitalized the DC universe with this superheroine? Amid all the "rep-sweats," did the film do justice to this classic comic heroine? Our second episode of the Price Projection Room features a discussion of the poignant horror film Get Out, written and directed by Jordan Peele (MADTV, Key and Peele, and Keanu). Get Out follows a young African-American photographer on a visit to his white girlfriend's parents' home. The tag line sums up the deep horror of the film, "Just because you're invited, doesn't mean you're welcome." In modifying the horror genre to service social commentary on race, but still staying within the conventions of the horror genre, the film is simultaneously funny, relevant, and scary. The film has sparked conversations (and even a viral challenge) throughout the country.
