It all comes back to Spider-Man doesn't it? The cultural saturation of the character in a lot of English speaking societies. The relatable nature of the character (and to be perfectly honest, most of the Spider people characters). The fact that the first Spider-Man trilogy was the first thing since the 90s Batman movies to really hit such a mainstream audience is no coincidence. So how do we get a look at what Spider-Man means to people? Oh, I don't know, maybe get a guest like Keifer from Select and Start to come and give us a look at what both this 2004 game and the movie that it ties in with? Yeah, that seems like a good idea. I should pat myself on the back for doing exactly that. Learn such things as: What was the super hero movie landscape looking like in 2004? Does it matter if Spidey has things overhead to actually swing from? How are the pizza missions what everyone loves about this game the most? And so much more! You can find the Keifer on Twitter @DannyVegito, his Youtube channel Keifers Corner (found @KeiferLirette) and on his podcast Select and Start. We close out Marvel Cosmic May with a look at the OG Nova, RICHARD RIDER! How can Doc help this jaded space cop who totally isn't Hal Jordan? Intro Next week is last episode of season 9 Background (2:00) Richard Rider created by Marv Wolfman and John Romita Sr. in The Man Called Nova #1 (Sept. 1976) Nova Corpsman Rhomann Dey is dying, and gives his power to high school student Richard Rider - however, he has no instructions on how to use these powers After some adventures on Earth, he travels to space, where he helps the Xandarians battle Skrulls and other enemies He returns to Earth and gives up his powers (first time), but after struggling without them, he regains them and joins the New Warriors Garthan Saal, a Nova Corpsman gone mad, strips Rich of his powers (2nd) so he can rebuild Xandar after Nebula destroyed it - Saal is defeated and his power is restored He defies the Xandarian queen in an effort to save Earth, and is stripped of his powers (3rd), but when his replacement sacrifices himself to stop the Deathstorm, he's returned to glory Annihilation - the entire Nova Corps save Rich is destroyed by Annihilus, so the Xandarian Worldmind takes refuge inside Rich's helmet - Rich kills Annihilus and saves the universe Unbeknownst to him, the Worldmind is recruiting new members to the Nova Corps - when Rich learns that Ego the Living Planet was among them, he objects and is stripped of his rank and powers (4th) Having lived with the Nova Force for so long, he is dying without the powers, so he borrows Wendell Vaughn's quantum bands and becomes Quasar - after saving the Corps during War of Kings, Ego is removed and Rich is restored as a Centurion Goes through a rip in space-time known as the Fault and enters the Cancerverse, where he and Star-Lord battle Thanos until the rip closes, trapping all three inside - Star-Lord and Thanos later get a hold of a comic cube that frees them, but Rich remains trapped When Sam Alexander contacted the Xandarian Worldmind to get information on his father, this alerted Rich and allowed him to escape the Cancerverse - unfortunately, his body became a portal, and the inhabitants tried to use Rich to invade Earth - he and Sam helped repel the invaders, and they returned to Earth The entire Nova Corps was once again decimated, and Richard became an alcoholic until Annihilius showed up and asked for Rich's help to defeat the Cancerverse invasion - after Rich swallowed the entire Cancerverse (#BecauseComics), he was killed by the Sentry, thus killing the invading forces, and resurrected by Annihilus as a way of saying thanks Took over as leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy after Star-Lord was killed, which Rich blamed himself for until he started therapy Issues - Theme is “Don't worry, it gets better… I mean worse… I mean better…” (8:13) Constant flux of powers causes him numerous problems Feels like everything is his responsibility, and thus his fault (14:50) PTSD as a result of the numerous wars and battles (22:49) Break (28:29) Plugs for Cheers to Comics, Adventures in Erylia, and Jeremy Whitley Treatment (29:51) In-universe - Have him figure out how to use the Nova Force for creation Out of universe - (33:52) Skit (39:46) Hello Richard, I'm Dr. Issues. -Hello, Doctor. So, what can I do for you? -Well, let's just say that I'm not going to be an easy case. I'm not going to give you a hard time, but this road is not smooth at all. I welcome the challenge. -You say that now, but when I start telling you some things…it's not even about the confidentiality. This is some serious stuff. A lot of death, a lot of pain, tons of anger…and that's just when things turn out ok. You're building up to a multitude of events, and I don't even know the basics about you. -Yeah, yeah, I get it. I just wish you could fast forward through this stuff, or leave off exactly where my last therapist did. Is that too much to ask? Do I have to repeat this every time? No, of course not. -Well, I gave you permission to look at my files, isn't that enough? *clearly irritated* What, you can't stomach to read it or something? What? No, I just want your take, not someone else's. -So you think my last therapist was a kook? You think it was that bad? Whoa, you're rushing to judgment way too early. -*Angry, rambling* Of all the people I get to take my stuff out on, I get someone who wants to start from the beginning, as if it wasn't bad enough going through it the first time! *continues rambling angrily* that's it, I'm outta here, gotta take a break, I KNEW this was going to go bad…*keeps rambling, door opens and shuts, still ranting* Well, this is going juuuuust great…oop -*door opens and shuts again, still ranting* whew, I might as well rip a hole in space time, that oughtta REALLY freak someone like you out. Do you know I've had to die just so I can live a better existence? Are you trying to intimidate me, or test me, or…I don't know what. Is this how you vent? -I don't vent. I attack. Then why are you attacking me? -Not you…well, not You, you. You just happen to be there. It's not like that. Richard…I'm the only one here. I get that you have no other target, but it's not productive to yell at me right now. I don't take it personally, but I'm still a person. -You're a person…aww, Doc has feelings…whaa whaa whaa…If you were with me, you wouldn't last long with that attitude. You're not trying to recruit me. I'm here to help you, remember? -*deep breath* Yeah, yeah…experienced dealing with cosmic madness. No excuse for my disrespect. This line of work kind of makes me jaded. I've heard worse, just not before…hmmm…you know what? Screw the background stuff. It's obvious that it pisses you off. What I'll focus on instead is what do you want to change about how you're feeling right now? -*pause* Well, like you said, I'm pissed off, but…it's deeper than that. It's like something keeps clawing through me…and believe me, I've been clawed through, so I know what I'm talking about. But it's not others, it's…it's something about me. Like, I'm not feeling how I should feel. Does any of this make any sense? Let me see if I understand. You have intense responses to your current state of mind, and it doesn't match with what you should be feeling based on what you know about yourself. -Something like that, I guess. Then what “should” you be feeling, if you don't mind my airquotes? - *pause* I shouldn't even exist, you know? I should have been dead and buried a looooooong time ago, but I'm still kicking…and kicking ass, while I'm at it. So, survivor's guilt? -I'm grateful! But, how many times am I going to go through this? I don't have a crystal ball -Well even the ones who have that type of power treat me like a wild card anyway, or take my power…sometimes I wonder if I should fight to get them back at all. Then I get pissed off evan more, and I double down, and just promise myself that if I ever get them back I won't lose them again…*frustrated* HOW…MANY...TIMES? How do I keep going? *pause* You were right. From the start, you were right. This is not a smooth road. You are like Sisyphus…perpetually pushing that rock. -I thought you were supposed to make me feel better. Hear me out! This is going to be a matter of perspective. You have been entrusted with a task that is incredibly important but has shown to carry with it a perpetual burden that resets from time to time. You can view that as a curse, but -*interrupting* If you say it's a blessing I swear No, I'm saying it's variety. You have learned to adapt to the same goal in ways that most people haven't endured yet. That's beyond unique, that's a level of discipline that can't be taught. If you continue to endure, then you are providing yourself with more ammo for unexpected challenges even when the basic premise remains the same. Sunrise, sunset, but no two are the same. You get me? -A part of me wants to rip your spine out through your chest and use it as a javelin for my next enemy you optimistic pious jerk *gulp* -But…hmmmph…that can't be all there is to it, right? Like, I can't make “keep my powers” be the end goal? It doesn't have to be, but you were the one who said that's what's eating at you. You're a complex study, so I'm sure we're just scratching the surface, and I'll challenge your own assumptions. -You got a bit of a bite to you after all. No wimping out. That's decent of you. Ok, hot shot. I'll tell you what. If you're willing to take my call, I'll reach out when I think I'm about to have someone get the drop on me. I'll be waiting *whispers* with some antipsychotics for the paranoia* -What was that? Nothing…ehe, I'll be waiting is my point. -Right then. Guess this is as good a time as any to wrap this up before I piss myself off again. Good bye. Bye *hears door open/shut* *phone dialing* I'm not even sure how this works, does my plan cover intergalactic calls? Anyhoo…um…your excellency…tribunal…ness…sir…thing…I think I'm going to take a break in my block scheduling for now…no, I didn't say I quit…I mean…your sense of time is so much different, a day is a decade to you, or vice versa…yeah, messes with my calendar. Plus my accountant doesn't know how to handle “being one with the balance” as a form of payment. Still have some details to work out. Ciao! Please enjoy this recut of our Kang episode where the segments flow in the standard order, for those people who were confused by/didn't care for the experimental nature of the original release :) Just before Quantumania releases, we travel through time with KANG THE CONQUEROR! This temporally unstable episode is our most ambitious yet - don't miss it! Intro Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania coming out Feb. 17 - Anthony & Doc will do a review mini-episode after the film drops Background Kang the Conqueror, Nathaniel Richards, created by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby Due to Kang's time-traveling abilities, his backstory, and even creation, are difficult to pin down Rama-Tut - first appeared in Fantastic Four #19 (Oct. 1963) - a time-traveling criminal from the year 3000 who went back to ancient Egypt In Sept. 1964, in Avengers #8, Rama-Tut reveals he traveled to the year 4000 and is called Kang the Conqueror Two months later (Nov. 1964), Immortus debuts in Avengers #10, and was later retroactively revealed as another variant of Kang Another variant appears a few years later - the Scarlet Centurion (Avengers Annual #2 - Sept. 1968) A heroic version was introduced in Young Avengers #1 (Feb. 2005) - Iron Lad Later revealed that Kang is actually Nathaniel Richards, a descendant of Reed Richards' father Reed's father traveled forward to the 31st century and brought peace to a war-ravaged Earth - it was here he had a child, named Nathaniel Nathaniel grew up bored of the simple peace he lived, and when he was 16, he stole a time machine, traveled back to Egypt, and became Rama-Tut He then traveled to the “present”, where he met Dr. Doom and became inspired by him Attempting to travel to his home timeline, he passed it by a thousand years, and upon learning that he can easily take over the war-torn planet, decides to go back to when Earth was fruitful so he can make it more worthwhile Often shows up as a foe of the Avengers, but sometimes he battles the Fantastic Four Major storylines: Celestial Madonna - searching for a woman destined to carry a powerful child, he finds Mantis, but is thwarted by alternative versions of himself - here we learn that Immortus and Rama-Tut are also Kang, but after Kang overloads his armor, he destroys himself, deleting Immortus and Rama-Tut from existence as well Council of Kangs - Three variants create a triumvirate to eliminate all other versions, but Ravonna (Kang's lover) tricks one of them into death before Immortus is destroyed by Prime Kang, the only one who remains Avengers Forever - Kang rejects Immortus, and allies with the Avengers to prevent Immortus from allying with the Time Keepers - this involves keeping Rick Jones alive and Avengers from other timelines Kang Dynasty - Kang, along with his son Marcus (operating as Scarlet Centurion), takes over the Earth in order to save it from a horrific future - although he initially conquers the world, he is defeated by the Avengers, with help from a traitorous clone of Marcus, who is infatuated with Carol Danvers (not unlike another version of Marcus) Responsible for the creation of the Young Avengers - 16 year old Nate Richards is rescued by Kang and shown his future growth into the despot, but this horrifies young Nate, and he uses the time-travel technology and transports himself to the past, where he arrives as the Avengers have been disassembled - he downloads the Vision's operating system into his armor, and this amalgamation (Iron Lad) assembles a new team of younger heroes to prevent Kang from rising up in the first place Issues Hedonic adaptation and the Diderot Effect Narcissism Technophilia Break Plugs for Cheers to Comics, Adventures in Erylia, and Meghan Fitzmartin Treatment theme: Anything, but not everything In-universe Out of universe Skit KANG: And now, my boy, it is time for you to DIE! DOC: Wait, it's not supposed to happen like this! * warp sound* IRON LAD: Doctor Issues, I presume? DOC: What the - who the - what the - IRON LAD: I understand, the whole time manipulation thing can be overwhelming. DOC: But you were just trying to kill me! IRON LAD: Oh no, sorry, that's a different me. DOC: Excuse me? IRON LAD: You can call me Iron Lad. Or Nate. DOC: So you're NOT trying to kill me? IRON LAD: Nope, definitely not. I had to warp you out of there, because if you died, it throws the entire timeline outta whack. DOC: But you look just like the guy I was in there… IRON LAD: Yeah, he's me from the future, but he showed me what it looked like, and I want absolutely nothing to do with that. So I went back to the past, which is your present, to stop myself from becoming him in the future. But the Avengers were gone, so I found the Vision's brain and downloaded it into my armor, and now here I am. DOC: I'm so confused… IRON LAD: I don't blame you. Sometimes I have to remind myself of who I am now, not who I was or who I might be. DOC: So what happens now? IRON LAD: I'm going to put you back in your office, just a liiiiitle bit earlier in the timestream, so you don't make the mistakes that lead up to whatever it was that made Kang want to kill you. DOC: That's just it, I don't even remember what it was. He just got up out of the chair and pointed a weapon at me. IRON LAD: Sadly, that's just how he is. He gets this idea in his head, and no matter what anyone says or does, he will do it come hell or high water. Sometimes I think I do it because I don't want anyone else dictating my destiny. DOC: Are we talking about him or you? IRON LAD: Uhh… ok, time to send you back now, good luck! DOC: Oh no, don't warp me like this, it feels like I'm *warp sound* drowning in- KANG: - the annals of history are *simultaneously* drowning in- DOC: Gaaaaah! KANG: You primitive dare interrupt Kang! You inadvertently prove my point about the vast majority of individuals who are mindless filler for the planet. Important resources wasted on people who can never comprehend how trivial their existence is to the grand scheme of time and history. That is one of my goals, to separate those who are worthy to share in the existence I plan on ushering forth from these… carbon-based cretins. And so far, you have done nothing to dissuade me from counting you in the latter group. DOC: Sorry, it's just… I wasn't feeling like myself. As to your point, philosophers have discussed the value of human existence for millenia. KANG: Those simpering academics? Bah. Very few are capable of acknowledging the meaningless of their lives, and ironically it is those who are best equipped to assist me in my plans. DOC: So… you're looking for nihilists? KANG: Only in nihilism can you find the ultimate freedom. DOC: I don't understand. You keep speaking in circles, can you please be direct and just - talk to me? KANG: Have we not been conversing this entire time? *Warp sound* RAMA-TUT: Don't listen to me, I can get a little long-winded sometimes. DOC: What the hell? RAMA-TUT: I am Rama-Tut. The me you were in there with is an older version of me, long after I took over ancient Egypt. DOC: How many of you are there? RAMA-TUT: There are as many variants of me as there are grains of sand in the desert. DOC: That's… unsettling. But why did you take me out of the session? RAMA-TUT: The machinations of Rama-Tut are far beyond your ken. You need only know this: for the universe to avoid never ending calamity, not only must you survive, but you must kill Kang. DOC: Dude, if you know ANYTHING about me, you'd know I am not going to kill anyone. RAMA-TUT: All mortals have limits, and in order to preserve all of existence, you must push beyond yours. This has been foreseen, and not only by me, but by all Kangs. Why do you think he allowed himself to be captured and brought to you? DOC: But why me? Literally anyone else could do a better job at that than me. RAMA-TUT: If I divulge that information to you, it would create dangerous ripples throughout the timestream. You must simply trust what I tell you. DOC: Not gonna happen. RAMA-TUT: Nevertheless, I will return you to your session, slightly earlier than before. Take this, it is a chronosword. You must use it to strike down Kang. It will be shielded from him until you are ready to use it. DOC: No, no, no *warp sound* for the last time- KANG: A rather foreboding introduction, Doctor. You speak as though we have met before. DOC: Uh, what I meant to say was- KANG: I have no doubt that my… variants have attempted to persuade you to kill me, have they not? DOC: I'm not exactly sure how client confidentiality works in this type of situation, but I'm gonna go ahead and just say I can't tell you what I spoke to anyyou else about. KANG: It matters not. I have foreseen this all. The entire series of events that led me, you, us to this moment. I have orchestrated what to your mind would be an incomprehensible amount of coincidences, all building up to my single greatest triumph yet. DOC: Not to be entirely self-deprecating, but if your greatest triumph involves me, somehow I think we need to reestablish your definitions of “great” and “triumph”. KANG: So simple, and yet you have no idea your function as a keystone in the story still to be told. The annals of history are drowning in- DOC: Drowning in- Gaaaah KANG: You primitive dare interrupt Kang! You inadvertently prove my point about- IMMORTUS: *warp sound* The irony of him daring call anyone primitive. DOC: OK, you all have GOT to stop cutting me in & out. And which one are you? IMMORTUS: I am IMMORTUS. And we haven't much time. DOC: Now THAT'S ironic. IMMORTUS: No, truly, the Time Keepers are hunting me down. I must inform you quickly. You are in grave danger. DOC: Yeah, I got that already. You're the fourth… you to pull me out of the session already. IMMORTUS: Fourth? *counts to self* that means there's still time then. DOC: Again, we have nothing BUT time. IMMORTUS: Not true at all. Listen to me, as soon as we return, you MUST kill Kang. DOC: Like I told the other guy, that's not gonna happen. IMMORTUS: You don't understand. You must do it before you are pulled from the timestream again. If you don't, the consequences to all of existence will be dire. DOC: Yeah, I know, Kang will destroy the entire universe. IMMORTUS: No, Doctor Issues. YOU will. DOC: Wait, what?!?! IMMORTUS: It would take far too much to explain, just know that… *beep* they're on to me. I must send you back now. DOC: No, wait, come here and *warp sound* talk to me! KANG: Have we not been conversing this entire time? DOC: I… KANG: Which one was it? The whiny child? Or the one who is so certain of his immortality he named himself after it? DOC: Again, to avoid any problems with confidentiality, I can't divulge conversations with other clients, even if they're kinda sorta you. I mean, I know there have been some shenanigans here, but I don't want to keep repeating things, otherwise I might as well just be talking to myself… KANG: You have no idea how right you are, my lad… DOC: What does that mean? KANG: He hasn't told you? DOC: Who hasn't told me what? KANG: Fascinating. Then there's still time for me. Allow me to disengage these restraints- DOC: Hold on, those are state of the art, I worked with the designer personally to ensure- KANG: Yes, but as you well know Doctor, you can't defend against yourself. DOC: Huh? KANG: And now, my boy, it is time for you to DIE! NATHANIEL RICHARDS: *Warp sound* It's not supposed to happen like this. DOC: Lemme guess, you're the “he” who's supposed to reveal some big secret that's going to change everything. NATHANIEL: I am Nathaniel Richards. Father of Kang, Immortus, Rama-Tut, Iron Lad, and all Kangs across the multiverse. And I'm not just any “he”, Doctor Issues. Or should I say… grandfather. DOC: *flat* what NATHANIEL: The timestreams have been merged and diverted so often things are broken. My own memory of how this came to be betrays me. But I know this: you are my grandfather, which makes you- DOC: Ancestor of Kang. NATHANIEL: Indeed. I had hoped to get this information to you sooner, but I was attacked by- DOC: At this point, does it really matter? My entire life, my entire identity, has been thrown into question. And I don't care how much you look or sound like me, I need this information straight from the source. NATHANIEL: What? DOC: I have to go back to Kang. I need to speak to him directly. NATHANIEL: I cannot send you back to where I took you from, or you will die, and it will cause a cataclysmic chain reaction that will obliterate the very fabric of reality! DOC: Then send me back to the moment when he decides I need to die. NATHANIEL: I don't understand. DOC: Look, when I get so much hearsay, I have to strip away all opinion. If Kang wants me dead, I don't need anyone else's interpretation. Whatever he does in that moment is the only thing that can resolve this. I am his provider, and it is my duty. If you are truly of my heritage, you'll understand this, and have some faith. NATHANIEL: I admit I do not understand. But I do have faith. Just know that if this goes wrong, I cannot help you any further. DOC: I know. NATHANIEL: Then best of luck to you, grandfather. *warp sound* DOC: Hello Kang, I'm… Doctor Issues. For the last time… KANG: A rather foreboding introduction, Doctor. You speak as though we have met before. DOC: Tell me why. KANG: That's… no… DOC: I may not understand, but I'm ready. KANG: No no no NO NO DAMN YOU NATHANIEL. DOC: Don't blame him, this right now is about why you feel the way you do about me. KANG: For someone who claims to have an advanced education, your understanding of things is below rudimentary. You are responsible for the creation of these other… inferior variants. Ergo, I eliminate you, and they are gone. DOC: As are you. KANG: The threat of vanishing from existence has not stopped me before, and it won't now. Not when I'm so close to having all that I need. Besides, if there's no risk, there's no reward. DOC: Then why do you tell me every time? You are holding something back. From yourself. I can help you confront it. Maybe no one has to die. KANG: You are willing to gamble the fate of the entirety of existence on your ability to speak? We truly are related, ancestor, and I admire your boldness. DOC: Only you would know this. Take us to the moment where we can have the greatest influence. KANG: Very well. Prepare yourself, Doctor. This will be a showdown for the ages. *warp sound* KANG 1: *background*Fascinating. Then there's still time for me. Allow me to disengage these restraints- DOC 1: Hold on, those are state of the art, I worked with the designer personally to ensure- KANG 1: Yes, but as you well know Doctor, you can't defend against yourself.*end background* KANG 2: Here we are. DOC 2: And here you come. To think, he gets all the glory. What does that make you? KANG 2: You clever… Now I know where I get it from. *to Kang 1* You're absolutely right! DOC 1: Huh? *realizes there's another version of him & Kang in the room* WHAT IS HAPPENING KANG 2: And now, my boy, it is time for YOU to DIE! KANG 1: No, this cannot be! DOC 1: Why are there two mes? DOC 2: Long story short, it's all a big timey-wimey ball. DOC 1: How did we end up allying with HIM?!?! DOC 2: Don't worry about that. Just do me a favor, and keep an eye on who our daughter marries in the future. DOC 1: What? DOC 2: Looks like my Kang has your Kang cornered… DOC 1: But he's our… my… patient. I can't let him just do this. DOC 2: If you knew what I know- DOC 1: But I don't, and I took an oath. If you're not going to protect a person that you're responsible for, then I will. DOC 2: Wait! KANG 2: If I were a primitive I might feel shame about ending the life of someone who looks like me. But at this point… KANG 1: Spoken like a true primitive. Alas, you will be the one to fall. DOC 1: Noooo…. KANG 1 & KANG 2: *blasts* DOC 1: AAAAAAHHHH KANG 1: *dying* Why? KANG 2: *dying* You simpleton… you have shattered the timestream… DOC 1: *dying* I… I took an oath… DOC 2: And the first part is do no harm… DOC 1: Nok… *dies* Ending Mention timescrew as we come out of the skit Recommended reading: Kang Dynasty Next episodes: Animal sidekicks, Claire Voyant, Penguin Plugs for social References: Lisa Simpson - Anthony Apple Podcasts: here Google Play: here Stitcher: here TuneIn: here iHeartRadio: here Twitter Facebook TikTok Patreon TeePublic Discord
Batman is one of the most well know superheroes around despite the fact that he's not really a superhero when you break the term down. Don't care, still love him. And that little used fact in games where he's a pretty good detective. Good thing we have Matt and Thad from Making Nerds Cringe here to help unravel the mystery of Batman Vengeance. Listen in as we take a look at this Batman the Animated Series (?) inspired game and all the fun that goes with it. SUMMARY The whole party is shaken after Ariel was attacked by the shade in her sleep. Realizing that a new threat seems to be after them and the ship is not as safe as they expected it to be, they chose to set up watches for the rest of the journey. Ariel calls every for a meeting and tells them that she thinks it is best if she stays in the room with The Spear in case something happens again. Kenina takes this opportunity to tell the party about her recent dream about Doitean and prods the rest of the party to share any strange dreams that they may be having. You can find her art on our art page for Daniel. Anna Mae – We are currently in the process of having our cover art redone to give it a fresh coat of paint and make it fit in a little bit more with the theme the show has taken. Redemption Podcast – Redemption is an Actual Play Podcast set in the Star Wars universe that is played using the Star Wars roleplaying system by Fantasy Flight Games. The story takes place starting near the beginning of the clone wars but carves its own path following them members of the crew. On the morning of their planned departure, they head over to City Hall to meet with someone from one of the leading families and let them know what had happened with Grimfang. Once that info has been passed along, they head back to The Iron Cask to set sail to return to Riven. SUMMARY After playing some of the games outside, the party makes their way back into the Port Norsal arena to see what has been set up now that the main event is over. They find an archery range, melee ring, a strange mechanical creature people are trying to ride, and a mysterious tent in the colors of the Midnight Carnival. Tempest and Kenina are most excited head over to the mechanical creature to try their luck and endurance with it, though they convince Ariel to give it a try too. Afterwards, everyone goes to see what the mysterious tent is all about and learn it is a fortune teller. They sit through a couple rituals before making their ways back to get food and head to their room, while Rem goes to check on the status of his armor. SUMMARY Having secured a way home, the party has the rest of the day to explore more of The Midnight Carnival. Tempest is the first to find some games to play, but is quick to try to get the other to play. Meanwhile, Rem takes some time to go through his new gift from Ariel. SHOUT OUTS DMs Guild – While coming up with the inspiration behind the Midnight Carnival, I turned to the DMs Guild for some help with getting ideas and coming up with things to keep the party interested. Two specific supplements that I used were Festivals, Feasts, and Fairs by Ashley May as well as Taverns, Inns, and Taprooms by JB Little. These helped me speed up the process and handle mechanics for crafting the shops, food, and events that the party experienced while visiting the Midnight Carnival and even more of their influence is shown in our next episode. Patreon – A HUGE shout out to our Guild Members over on Patreon. Thanks to their support we have been able to start getting artwork commissioned on a more regular basis. We were able to commission art for Fioch, the legendary greataxe from before the podcast earlier last year and by the end of the year we were able to commission Lobhadh, a pair of legendary pair of twin daggers from the same series. This episode features a promo from Ghosts on a Train, and olde timey themed actual play podcast using the game Ghost Lines to tell their stories. SUMMARY Upon reaching the city of Port Norsal, the party is stopped at the gates and informed that inns in the city are quite full, on account of The Midnight Carnival being in town. They are told that if they wish to stay in the city square, that their main options were going to be higher end rooms at some inns right next to the arena, or they could look deeper in the city if they were looking to save some coin. Wanting to treat themselves, the party decided to stay at the VIP Suite of the Farren's Favour. They got to experience some of the highlights of being an adventurer during their stay and also chose to see what the Midnight Carnival was all about. They were met with hundreds of stalls selling goods of all sorts, including a few things special to the event. While wandering around, they also ran into Eldeth once again who loaded them up with her Dwarven bread. The show itself was quite a spectacle, ran by a mysterious man named Amandan, The Ringmaster. Though things took turn in the end that left the party unsure of what this carnival is all about… SHOW SPONSORS This episode is brought to you by Gabe and Jeff, over at Inter-Party Conflict, Fred on Fyre, Evora Dawn, and Pwrful Condor. SUMMARY This is a special episode that goes over some listener and group questions about Adventures in Erylia. In true AinE discussion fashion, we took those simple questions and embellished them into lengthy wandering discussions. We didn't do any specific shout outs, but I did grab a few of the specific things we talked about to include them here. Zee Bashew – You cannot get rid of cursed dice. You hide them and they are passed down to someone when you die. C4 Labs – Local Company that makes RPG related products. Chantalle has bought into their gear dice tray and a rolling tower and Christa has bought a cool wood and acrylic coaster. Dungeon in a Box – Chris runs an off mic campaign for the group as a way to play more casually using Dungeon in a Box. We are only a few boxes in to the first campaign that he has, but at this point he has gotten 2 full campaigns. It has been great for helping him through prep time as it comes with a small, focused, booklet module, premade maps, and minis for the important encounters. As a player it is interested because they have also included some campaign long perks for us to unlock and use in the game. SUMMARY Our group of adventurers, along with their small contingency of Dwarven Blackguard, have made it to the edge of the forest, near where they had entered previously in the search for Grimfang. They awake on a hazy day and prepare themselves for the trek and battle ahead. Though they run into little trouble along the way, they reach the camp and hear the sounds of gnolls milling about. A quick scout from the top of tree reveals Grimfang himself for the first time, a gnoll larger than any others with a skeletal visage, wielding a weapon none have seen before. After some brief planning for how to attack the camp, action starts. While we do use some of the sound effects offered by BattleBards, I have spent some money over the last few months to expand our catalog of sound effects. Some of these have come from recent Humble Bundles, which was where I got my start in expanding this catalog. To further expand it, I have also picked up some sound effects packs from ASoundEffect. If you would like to explore the world of sound effects for your own endeavors, here is a list of artists used to get you started: Audio Alchemist, Epic Stock Media, Fusehive, Gamemaster Audio, Evil Mind, Sound Spark. SUMMARY Realizing that it is getting late, instead of leaving Barrowbeard’s clearing, the group discusses staying their for the night in relative safety. Though the decision to stay is made, there is still some time before it gets dark. While half of the party stays behind to set up camp, the other half continues their search into the forest, hoping to find a path to follow in the coming morning. In camp, they discuss what should happen in the event of an ambush, while on the trail, they find exactly what they were after. SUMMARY Night comes to a close with a fresh kill, leading to breakfast. After another half day's travel, our adventurers say their goodbyes to Eldith and send her on her way, protected and invisible. They back track to an area that feels promising for tracking down the gnolls. Though it is getting late, they decide to set off into the forest. Though not all in the forest is as it seems. His mead is made locally wit different ingredients that he imports if needed. This was the first place I tried mead and I was set. Four Orbs - Four Orbs is another 5e actual play like we are. The story is something their DM, Dave, has clearly spent a lot of time on. There is a great mix of seriousness and humor, as well as some interesting humor and off topicness. SUMMARY After a brief sit down after their run in with some crazed wolves, our adventurers continue on their journey to Port Norsal to get Eldith to safety. The day progresses and it seems that they may be dealing with inclement weather in the next day or so. However, the sun does begin to set and the group must find somewhere to rest for the night. Knowing they are getting close to where the gnolls have been active, they chose to camp as far away as possible in their current location, along the shores of Lake Isylia. SUMMARY As the party makes their way towards Port Norsal, having chosen to take Eldith along with them, they are stopped by the dwarven smith of the village of Starren. He offers them a masterwork quality sword that he has made as a side project for free under two conditions: they use it to kill Grimfang, and they spread the word about his work when they do. However, the party only intends to locate Grimfang, not kill him, so they turn him down. On the road, Ariel and Eldith share stories of their people. Hoping to get some more information about dragon myths, Ariel instead, gets her first story about creatures from the Underdark. After steering the conversation towards dragons, she comes to learn little that she didn’t already know. As the afternoon starts to turn to early evening, the group notices some wolves behaving erratic, who end up charging out into the road and attacking their horses. If you'd like to join them in supporting the show, consider joining our Patreon. SHOUT OUTS Guild of Adventurers – This is a very highly produced actual play that really blurs the lines between being an actual play and a scripted audio drama. So far, the show has loosely been based on adaptations of classic stories and plays, with the actions of the players altering from the usual course of the stories. These have been great people to get to know and we were even able to sit in on one of their recording sessions to see how they get the show all put together. The only downside is that their production value means there’s a bit of a wait between episodes. SUMMARY This episode marks the return of the Erylian Epic campaign and it starts up right where the previous campaign left off. Having finished their business with the dwarves in Starrengeld, the party makes their way back down the mountain to begin their next leg of the adventure. Currently, the plan is to investigate the location of Grimfang, and return that information to the village to handle the situation. However, waiting for them at the bottom of the lift is Lydia, the mayor, to complicate things. SHOUT OUTS All of our Patrons – Support from our patrons helps us do things with the show that we could not otherwise afford to do. This may not always be noticeable, or take a while to show results, but we reached a huge savings milestone as our last Story arc was winding down. Thanks to everyone who has supported us along the way, we were able to commission character art for the Erylian Epic party. Dungeons and Randomness‑ – D&R is one of the podcasts I have listened to the longest, and is one of the shows that inspired me to create my own. They are a great actual play with hundreds of episodes and a large and diverse cast. They have also just begun a new arc in their story and released recaps to help get caught up to the story right away! SUMMARY As the party climbs up the ladder to finally leave the sewer system after a long and arduous journey, they are greeted by a very pleasant tiefling woman. Cazivel owns a small shop near the center of Mieveht’s Cyriin district that sells trinkets for travelers, but also a few magical items. After a moment of trying to buy some of her magical goods, Chalul being the only one successful with an Alchemy Jug, she starts getting them ready for their job. It is made clear to the group that this job isn’t just cover for leaving the city, they are doing a real job for her, and by association, for Cassien as well. She hands over travel papers and contracts to Willow, as well as a letter that they were told is to remain unopened until they find Sinah Nightmoon in the town of Rhodes. After their cart is loaded and they are ready to go, she gives them their final piece of cargo, a medium sized box which she places within a secret compartment of the cart. As the cart makes its way down the streets, Willow happens to notice a wanted poster, with likenesses that could match them and others. Some are crossed off, and it is clear the bounty is 1000 gold per head. She informs Chalul who happens to spot another. How safe are they leaving? Superman can’t really be stopped by normal bad guys, we’ve established that. But what happens when Lex Luthor decides to really go after him? Oh, we’ve done that too? Ummmm, so what happens this time? It’s comics after all, so we know he isn’t really going anywhere.Listen in as Dan McMahon from DC Supersons comes on the show to take a look at a Gameboy exclusive title based on the 1990s animated series. Yeah, that’s what we’re going with for this one. It says so on the box so it must be true.Learn such things as: What horrible things do Dan and Chris say that they thought would never leave their mouths? How do sharks even play a role in this game without Aquaman popping up? Will somebody listen to me and every single guest I’ve had on and just make a Superman game where he’s playing detective already? And much more! Links * Adventurer's Guide to Theria Vol 1 Kickstarter * Adventurer's Guide to Theria Vol 1 Preview * Previewing The Adventurers Guide to Theria Hello Adventurers and welcome to your peak behind the screen for May 6th 2019. Usually, I try to do this about once every 3 months, and you might notice that this one is a little bit early. Well, we’ve already built up some news to get out, and some of it is a bit time sensitive. There is a kickstarter going right now for The Adventurers Guide to Theria - Volume 1 - Ellara that I am extremely excited about. I want to talk about the Nightwatch for the second arc of the Mieveht Story. I am trying to get more writing done for the blog. And to send things off, I will be answering a question from one of our Patrons. You’ve heard their promo on our show. You may have seen them in our recommended page. But here’s something you probably don’t know, I actually cite a lot of my inspiration for creating the world of Erylia and starting the podcast to Dungeons and Randomness. Dungeons and Randomness is a very long running podcast with a massive backlog. They feature a huge cast, now running three separate groups, sharing a consistent story in the same world. This brings us to the kickstarter. Dungeons and Randomness is working on a setting book for the land of Ellara in the world of Theria, their homebrew setting. The book is already funded and they are currently working their way through a bunch of fun stretch goals to further expand the book. This book is gorgeous, and if you would like to see it for yourself, they have generously provided a free preview, which you can find in the kickstarter campaign or linked in the show notes for this episode. The preview is already formatted, filled with art, and could easily stand alone as its own book.Did I mention, the preview is 64 pages?! They have clearly put a lot of time and thought into getting this book ready to print. Really, you should have already paused this by now and went to look at the preview for yourself, but if you need more convincing, I have written a blog post reviewing the preview and going over what is included. Check the show notes for a link to the kickstarter, the preview, and today’s blog post. Now that you’ve gone and backed the kickstarter for The Adventurer’s Guide to Theria, let’s get on to some Adventures in Erylia news. You may have noticed that since Arc 2 of The Mieveht Story has started, our releases have gone back to being consistent. If you noticed this, it also means you probably noticed that period of a few months where, well, not much was coming out. I got into a bit of a slump when it came to editing, but I have really been working to get things back on track and keep us consistent once again. However, even though we were not releasing episodes, the cast of Erylia was still having a good time getting together to play some good ol’ Dungeons and Dragons. All of this is to say, we have actually already finished recording the entire upcoming arc for the Mieveht Story. In case you had missed it in a previous announcement, now that both stories have been introduced, the plan is to run shorter arcs in hopes of moving back and forth between the two stories more frequently. We would love it if, while you listen along to our new releases, you send any questions or thoughts that you have to adventuresinerylia@gmail.com with Nightwatch in the subject line. We have not yet recorded the Nightwatch and do not intend to until the arc is close to being fully released. If you send in your thoughts we will try to work them in to that episode, as well as attempt to answer any questions that you might have as a listener. It would be great if, going forward, the Nightwatch can include you, the listener, just as much as it includes the cast. I’m sure you already went through and read that blog post for the Dungeons and Randomness kickstarter. Did something seem a bit odd about it? Maybe that you were reading a blog post on the Adventures in Erylia website? Didn’t I kill that off like a year ago? Well you’re right, I did fade out the blog almost exactly one year ago from the date I post this Behind the Screen. If you have been in our Discord (hint hint, join our Discord, adventuresinerylia.com/discord), you might have noticed a huge focus from me recently on creating content as Adventures in Erylia. Aside from keeping on top of new episodes, I have been working to revive the blog in the past month. The last two releases have released alongside a separate blog post detailing decisions made as a Dungeon Master within the most recent episode. I may not always have specific thoughts to talk about like I have in recent weeks, but I am intending to try and create at least one new blog post per month. If you have something specific you would like me to talk about, reach out to us. You can send us an email to adventuresinerylia@gmail.com, you can find us on Twitter under @EryliaPod, or you can join our Discord (seriously, we love having new people in our Discord) at adventuresinerylia.com/discord. We will send things off with something new I am going to do in these Behind the Screen segments. I asked our Patreon supporters on Discord what question they would like me to answer about Erylia, or something they would like to know about the world. Lucas asked - “What are some interesting and dangerous landmarks in Erylia?” First of all, Lucas, thank you so much for supporting us on Patreon. As for interesting and dangerous landmarks? Well, I’ll start of with some honesty, while I have broad concepts and some high level maps sketched up for the rest of the world, Syvahl is the only continent I have done some extensive world building on, so these answers are reflective of that. I’ve decided on 3 different landmark like things. These are more like large areas, but I feel they are definitely interesting, dangerous, and even a little mysterious. This is a little taste for these areas, maybe I will expand upon one with more detail in a future Behind the Screen. We have Tel Vashiir. Tel Vashiir is a giant rock that floats above a massive oasis in the middle of Syvahl. However Tel Vashiir isn’t just a giant rock. There is a small city build on the top of Tel Vashiir. Tel Vashiir is known as the City of Mages. It is the largest concentration of magic in all of known Erylia and is dedicated to the study of all magic in the world. Near the south western coast of Syvahl, an area exists that is known as The Plaguelands. Legend tells that this area became what it is as the result of a very powerful ritual going wrong. The Plaguelands is an area, hundreds of square miles, where life has been drained from the very land. Trees have dried and withered, grass has been turned to dust, and whatever creatures have survived are twisted forms of what they once were. Whatever happened also completely severed the city of Alderick from the rest of the Syvahl’s civilization. On the other side of Syvahl, miles off the eastern coast, lies an ever present fog bank known as The Mists. No one knows what lies inside of The Mists. Most ships brave or stupid enough to sail into them, are never seen again. A few have returned though, however whatever lies inside has driven them utterly insane. Not a word spoken by someone who ventures into The Mists and returns should be trusted. Thank you for listening. This has been a dive Behind the Screen. Your way to learn some of the inside news for what is going on with Adventures in Erylia. We will be back next week with a new episode of The Mieveht Story and in a few months with another look Behind the Screen.
SUMMARY Our party has managed to locate the ferals that Scarecrow had asked them to handle. Being the feral creatures that they are, a diplomatic approach proves useless. In one of their tougher combats, the party must fight off multiple feral ratfolk, as well as the swarms that have gathered around them. However, a few slips from the DM while reading the stat block may reveal that these creatures are far worse, and this combat may yield greater repercussions down the road. SUMMARY This episode kicks off the second arc of the Mieveht Story. We rejoin Sug, Willow, Chalul, and Las as they begin to make their way outside of the city of Mieveht. As the sun begins to set and things die down in The Bannered Mare, the groups current hide out, they are retrieved by Victor Gold, a halfling man who seems to be connected to Cassien. Victor escorts them through his establishment into the basement where they go through a secret door into the network of tunnels below the streets of the city. As they leave, he directs a couple of them to grab a wheel barrow filled with bedding and a sack filled with… questionable goods. Shortly after entering the tunnel network, the group is met by a mysterious man standing in the pathway ahead of them. It turns out to be Cassien, who has come to give a final farewell to the people responsible for saving his daughter. He gives each member of the party a parting gift as they start their journey. After traveling through the network of sewer tunnels, Victor stops to let the group know that the items he asked them to carry are some sort of toll for passage through this area. It is after this that they meet Scarecrow and his gang of fellow ratfolk. Though the typically agreed upon payment has been delivered, and is even in better quality than usual, Scarecrow informs Victor and the rest of the party that they will need a little extra to let them pass safely. A few members of Scarecrows gang appear to have gotten some sort of disease and have gone feral. He expects the group to take care of them. This session was recorded as live stream during Extra Life so there are some little hiccups that were a result of that that hopefully aren’t too noticeable. SUMMARY After their first meeting with Lord Elngard, the group is put up in a luxurious inn in Starrengeld, The Locket and Key. To make the most of their chance to relax and decompress, the group decides to have a bit of a personal banquette and a spa night. During the time at the spa, the party discovers a little more mystery surrounding one of its members, which creates more questions than it answers. The next day, the party meets once again with Lord Elngard for lunch in the Solarium of Starrengeld. He once again thanks them for what they have done, and he further rewards them by giving each of them an item he felt matched the personalities he had seen of them the day before. He also gives them a padded box with a cache of healing potions, hoping it will help them in their fight against Grimfang. SUMMARY This was our first recording session after a long, nearly two month break that we took while Caitlin and Damian finished preparing for their wedding and got married. This are a little crazier than normal because of how long it had been since we last played. Our band of adventurers makes their way to the king’s pavilion in Starrengeld, looking to find an audience with Lord Elngard himself. After meeting with the king’s advisor, Yodrun, and giving him the note they got from Ulven in the Guild of Jewelers, he takes them back to meet with Elngard. The party is met with a very old and seeming to be in failing health, dwarf. Elngard take the artifacts from Rem and Kenina and tells them of his daughter, Sylvehd. She had become smitten with one of the craftsmen. When Elngard tried to stop her from seeing a man beneath her status, she decided to run away from home and the city. Elngard had never seen her again, but the bracelet matched bracelets found in her lover’s place when she disappeared, and the painting in the locket was of Sylvehd. Elngard thanks them for the closure he has finally gotten and offers to put the whole party up in one of the most expensive inns in the city, with a generous tab. SUMMARY The party takes a night to rest at the first inn in Starrengeld, Lift’s End. Kenina wakes up early and is shortly joined by Tempest outside of the inn to get some of their morning exercises done. After waking up, Rem is more interested in filling his belly than he is training with the girls outside and he waits for everyone else to join him. Ariel wakes up last and spend a few moments to write in her journal about the dream she had last night, where Nina had taken up the mantle of being Doitean’s Rider. As everyone joins together again for breakfast, they try to come up with a plan for the day, to talk to a jeweler about the artifacts they had brought as well as visit the library to learn more information about the dragon problem back home. Thurin tells the party where the guild square is, where they will find the Jeweler’s Guild, as well as The Guild of Surveyors, which is the closest thing they have to a library. When they reach the guild square, the party decides to split up. Rem and Kenina go to the Jeweler’s Guild, while Tempest follows Ariel to The Guild of Surveyors. Unfortunately, neither Tempest, nor Ariel, can read Dwarven, so while they are able to look through a few tomes, scrolls, and tablets, they aren’t able to read much of it. One of the books was clearly an anatomy of dragons of some sort, describing their various characteristics and what use some of the components of a dragon may be useful for. They also read through an illuminated scroll that tells of an old Dwarven legend, a battle between Dunatis, god of mountains and Fuar, a white dragon. At the Jewelers Guild, Rem and Kenina get an audience with the grand master of the guild. However, the information they gain is not in the best light. As Kenina show’s Ulven the bracelet, the mood turns sour and he informs them that they should seek audience with the king immediately. He writes them a note that the party brings news of Bruhm and Sylvehd, before quickly asking them to leave and retiring. Rem and Kenina rejoin with Ariel and Tempest, where Rem, who can actually read Dwarven, deciphers some of the text they had gotten. The most stand out thing that he finds is a stone tablet, engraved with ten names, each associated with a color, of which Doitean is associated with red. Since they needed to go seek their audience with the king, Ariel consigns the help of the guild to do some research for her since she cannot stay. This episode ends with the party approaching the king’s manor. SHOW SPONSORS This episode is brought to you by Gabe and Jeff, over at Inter-Party Conflict, Chaiikaii, fredonfyre, and Evora Dawn. Specifically, I had him help me with editing my first ever short story, Cassien’s Dishonor, which was released originally almost a year ago. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I have not made the most out of the help he had given me, but I felt that what he did was worth well beyond what I paid and blew my expectations out of the water. He spent a night working with me through text chat and a google doc, reading my story and offering comments on the work, and rereading as I made changes to see if I was moving in the right direction. The biggest thing I got from working with Noah, was how to write more narratively for a listener, and less journalistic for the sake of my world. SUMMARY Our party of Adventurers travels along the lift system from the small village of Staren up to the entrance of the great dwarven city of Starengeld. During this journey, we take a moment to peer into the minds of the individual party members and see how they feel about their current quest. As they arrive to the top of the lift system, they realize that they haven’t come across any living creatures the whole way, so far they have only seen golems. Slightly worried, they make their way down a tunnel and into the mountain. As they reach the end of the tunnel, they are relieved to hear the sounds of a city located within a massive cavern. As they had been told about in Staren, they find a small tavern called Lift’s End, where they stop to rest before heading into the city proper. They eat their fill and have a few drinks at the tavern. They take the opportunity to learn a little bit more about both the city across the way, and about the legend of Grimfang the Gnoll. Thurin, the owner of Lift’s End takes a few of them out to see the city, located on a platform, held up by massive pillars in the middle of the open cavern. Here, they learn that the city of Starengeld has many tiers, with thousands of dwarves living and working below where they are staying. As the night draws to a close, the party retires, and Ariel has a visit from Cossain, her Patron Angel. In this dream, Cossain gives Ariel some more reassurance on her path, but also shows her a vision of a potential future. A future in which Kenina wields Doitean’s Axe for evil, atop a massive red dragon. The podcast starts with a few introductory episodes to help you get to know the characters. This has quickly become one of Christa’s favorite podcasts. She loves the story, the roleplay, the characters, and even some of the NPC’s. Ballad of the Seven Dice – A Fifth Edition actual play with a very interesting premise to their story. The game itself is set in The Forgotten Realms, the main cannon setting for 5E. However, all of the characters from their own, different realms, and some even seem to come from entirely different times. This story leans on the darker side, and some of the sound effects and descriptions will make you squirm. SUMMARY The party enters the village of Starren and has some time to kill while they are waiting on the lift to come down and take them up into the city of Starrengeld. The have a run in with a member of the traveling company who they previously rented their now heavily damaged cart from. Hearing about what had happened to them Lydia, the mayor of the village, pulled them into the tavern for some drinks to tell them about Grimfang. They learn that Grimfang is a large gnoll that may or may not be a myth, however, his band of gnolls that occasionally attack people on the road are very real. Unfortunately, the damage being done hasn’t been enough for Port Norsal’s leadership to get heavily involved, and dwarves do not have enough forces to wipe them out. Rem goes to talk to the leader of the village guard, the Black Guard, and is offered a nice sum of money if they can track down Grimfang’s camp and return with any useful information. After sorting everything out in the village, the lift up to Starrengeld touches down and the party begins their slow climb up the mountain. Hello Adventurers! I just wanted to take a few moments to talk about a couple things going on behind the scenes with the Adventures in Erylia family, and to explain the massive delay on this next episode. Since the big thing to get out of the way is the episode delay, I will start there. Summer in general is a busy time. The weather is nice so people want to get out and do things more. As someone who works nights, this has meant quite a few times where I am waking up early, outside of my normal sleep schedule, and am pretty wiped out by the end of the day. Caitlin and I are also getting married barely more than a month from now. That means we are truly in crunch time for making sure everything is ready. This has meant more time being devoted to that, as well as the stress that comes from a huge event right around the corner. Things will start to normalize after that. Until then, unfortunately, episodes will come out when I can get them wrapped up, but come mid September, we should be back to a regular schedule. So. With that explanation out of the way, what are some things going on with the show behind the scenes? Well, first off, it’s already been in an episode, but we are now able to use BattleBards’ catalog of music and sound effects in our show. I am so happy for this because they have such a wide array of ambient sounds and sound effects I have wanted to use but struggled to find reliably. I have also been working a bit more lately on an overland map for the continent that the players are currently on, Syvahl. I’ve had a stitched together version of things I drew on notebook paper ages ago, but have struggled to turn it into a clear digital form that I was happy with. I recently started using the hex shape tool in Inkarnate to digitize this map and have been happy with things so far. Right now, as it is a work in progress, updates to it have been going out to our Patreon exclusive channel in our discord. The last bit of goings on, and I suppose our most official announcement of it so far, is that Adventures in Erylia is joining Extra Life’s Game Day. Due to the nature of the players scheduling, we do not have a clear locked in schedule yet, but do know that there are plans to be live streaming multiple recording sessions as well as potentially playing some board games and some time spent gaming online as well. Look out for more news about Extra Life towards the end of September. Thank you all for listening and your support.
SUMMARY After defeating the rest of the gnolls, or so it seems, the party decides it was not a good idea to set up camp where they were. Kenina offers to power through the night while the rest of the group sleeps in the cart. Her time is uneventful, however Rem has another strange dream, continuing where the last left off, but now two large, strange figures stand above him arguing. As morning comes, the group stops so they can eat and Rem and Kenina can trade places driving and sleeping. Ariel and Tempest go foraging and Tempest catches a rabbit, much to the disappointment of Ariel. After a brief conversation with a traveling ore trader, the group is off once more. While Kenina sleeps in the cart, she also goes through another one of her dreams. This time, she is in her village, and the large red dragon she has been seeing in her dreams swoops down to offer her power, and encourage her to take the axe. She tries to chase the dragon down but cannot keep up, and finds herself in a forest that hadn’t existed. In the early afternoon, the group reaches the village of Starren, where Lydia, the mayor, tells them they’ll have to talk about the gnoll encounter. SHOUT OUTS This episode, we’d like to give a shout out to Godsfall. Godsfall is a highly produced and well edited actual play podcast set in Aram Vartian’s own homebrew setting. The podcast features a cast of characters who find themselves to be god children and must find a way to save their world from the old gods. This is a podcast that I have described to friends as a mix between an actual play podcast, like our own, and a full blown audio drama. The editing and production work that goes into it is truly amazing and must be heard to be fully appreciated. In an interesting crossing of the timelines, this is our first time being able to use BattleBards! I learned about BattleBards through Godsfall, since that is where a lot of Aram’s music and sound effects come from. I reached out to them and have been allowed to join their podcaster program. Hello Adventurers! This episode comes out to you with some unfortunate news. I had a personal emergency come up over the weekend and was unable to finish editing this weeks episode. I still wanted to get something in the feed for you guys, so I talk a little bit about the new editing techinique I am using on this next episode. It is something that I have decided to pick up after talking with Dave, who is the DM and editor for anotehr actual play podcast, Four Orbs. I also decided to take this opportunity to tease the next Erylian Short Story, which will be titled Timeless Love in the Halls of Iron. It will be another story similar to Cassien's Dishonor, which gave some insight into the earlier life of Cassien Nailo from the Mieveht Story. This next story will tie in a lot of plot elements that the adventuring party from the guild has decided to take. Our last bit of news for this week is that the entire Adventures in Erylia family attended the Glass Cannon Podcast meet up this weekend. We had an amazing time and met some absolutely great people and cannot wait to be able to host a meet up of our own.
SUMMARY The party enters the bustling port city of Norsal, having gained a new member, Tempest, from the crew of the Whispering Winds. Their first order of business is to secure some sort of travel to get from Port Norsal down to Starrengeld in the South West. After purchasing a cart and a couple of horses, which they have been told they can sell back for some of their money later, though Rem thinks they’ve been swindled, they make a quick stop at a general store. After loading up their new cart with supplies for the road, the head out of the city to begin their three day journey. Day one goes by uneventful. They pass through many of the vineyards responsible for Port Norsal’s famous wines before making camp for the night. However, things take a turn for the worse on day two. Rem and Kenina spot a commotion a few miles down the road, which has broken up by the time the party gets to it. Rem investigates and determines that gnolls were responsible. As he checks on the perimeter, gnolls armed with longbows fire upon him and the rest of the party from the trees. We end the session as 6 more gnolls come rushing out from the forest in pursuit of the party as their cart speeds away. SHOW SPONSORS This episode is brought to you by Gabe and Jeff, over at Inter-Party Conflict, and Chaiikaii. If you'd like to join them in supporting the show, consider joining our Patreon. SHOUT OUTS Gabe from Inter-Party Conflict was the winner of our first listener giveaway, which we ran through the month of March. Gabe received a package of Adventures in Erylia themed and branded swag, which included a mousepad, a set of dice, a miniature hand painted by Christa, some magnets, and a sheet of stickers designed by Chantalle and made by Caitlin. Check out the pictures of what they received on their Twitter. Not Quite Heroes is an actual play podcast featuring characters with a bit more moral ambiguity than your standard adventuring party. Think of their show a little bit like the Mieveht Story, where the characters aren’t outright evil, but they’re not always upstanding citizens either. We had our first #minMAXmankind rolls in this episode. You can learn about our participation in #minMAXmankind here. For our d6 rolls this episode: Damian got a 5, Chris got a 6, Christa got a 2, Chantalle got a 4, and Caitlin got a 6. We will be donating $23 dollars to the Child’s Play charity for this episode. The group cycles through meeting Tempest, a water Genasi played by Caitlin. They tell her a little bit about the journey they are on, and so far, she seems to think things are nothing more than fish stories. We also run into our first major retcon of the podcast. During the recordings I had givent he journey a time frame of 12 days, but while figuring out the distances on my map, I realized it will be closer to 6 or 7 days. SUMMARY Our Erylian Epic campaign begins with the party having returned from their first big mission, to defeat a gathering of goblins and kobolds who had attacked the city of Riven. Rem decides to spend his time catching up on sleep and relaxation while the ladies decide to go out for drinks, performance, and general socializing. Little did he know, Rem would not be getting a good night's rest as recent events have given him nightmares of the many others who have died around him in the past. After waking, going through their morning routines, and bathing, complaints from Ariel have led the party to discovering she managed to catch fleas while in the goblin caves. With a few worlds and a wave of his hand, Rem makes short work of them, and everyone heads into the city to do some shopping and prepare for the next adventure before them. They stock up on some more portions, Ariel buys a staff and a new hooded cloak, and Kenina sells a spear to the local blacksmith – The Great Kobold Spear, Slayer of Men. Upon returning to the Guild Hall, Kenina and Ariel meet with Mistress Gallanodel to help Ariel out with finding an arcane focus. Rem, anxious to get going, gets his bags packed right away, informs the record keeper that the party needs to meet with the guild leaders before they depart, and waits for the rest of the party to return. Nyxi heads up stairs to pack her things and write a short letter. With their individual business out of the way, the party meets up once again for their audience with the guild masters. Hello Adventurers! Let’s have a peak behind the screen and chat about what’s going on with Adventures in Erylia. It has been a long, long time since doing one of these. That was never the original intention, but every time I thought of doing one, nothing really seemed important enough to do this instead of edit, but I want to get these out more regularly now. My goal is to keep these short, but if you just want the bullet points, here’s what I’m going to talk about: Episode 1 of the Erylian Epic Upgrade to Hindenburg Journalist Pro World Building Wednesday -> World Anvil Discord Patreon Moving hosts Episode 1 of the Erylian Epic is recorded, and I am currently in the process of editing it. Based on where I am at right now in the editing process, I think you’ll be getting another long episode. I’m about an hour into the edit, and the current length is 2 and a half hours. By the time I get to the end, I have a feeling it’s going to be a bit short to cut into two episodes, so it will probably be released as a longer than usual episode. I recently upgraded the software I use to edit. It’s actually the second upgrade since the relaunch. Back in December I started a trial period on Hindenburg Journalist. It is a non-destructive editor (meaning, when I make a cut, it “hides” the content instead of removes it). This was huge for me in regards to editing. Using Audacity like I had been meant that if I didn’t like a cut I made previously, I was stuck with it. I could undo things to a certain extent, but if I was on my second editing pass over an episode, it was far too late to go back and fix it. I bought Hindenburg when my trial ran out, and when they had their yearly sale on Feb 13th, I decided to upgrade it. This gave me access to a few more tools built in to the software that will hopefully make a difference down the line. I don’t think it has really been talked about in any of the episode introductions, so I wanted to shout it out here. For a few months now I have been doing a weekly blog series that I call World Building Wednesday. In these blog posts, I go over some element about the world of Erylia and give it some depth in writing so that you guys can read about it and learn a little bit about the world and about my process when it comes to world building. About a month ago I was also turned on to a pretty amazing tool to help aid me in building the world of Erylia. World Anvil. World Anvil is a website where you can create an account and build the elements for your world in a wiki-like fashion. There is a ton of different categories for organizing your information and also a ton of text boxes for adding information that you may not even have been thinking about. I’m a part of the discord server for World Anvil, and it is an amazing community. Also, Dimitris, the guy behind World Anvil is an amazingly hard worker. You can see it in the updates channels. He is ALWAYS working on something. I’m not even sure the man sleeps. Oh, and if you don’t think you need a world building website for your D&D game, well he is currently working hard to create systems specific to RPGs. Speaking of Discord. We have a Discord server, and you can join it! All of the members of the cast hang out in discord as a few friends we have made while gaming. We are also in voice chat usually at least once every weekend while we game together, so if you are interested in chatting with us and maybe getting in a game with us, come join our server. Unfortunately the discord invite links don’t play well with redirects, so the url is http://discord.gg/QfZvZ6J, which is also in the show notes for this episode. We do have a Patreon set up for the show. If you’d like to contribute financially to the show, you can support the show on Patreon. We only have two tiers set up, $1/month and $5/month. $1 will get you the content part of our Patreon content, which includes our “lost” recordings from when the show was recorded on a Blue Yeti and sounded terrible as well as outtakes from our current episodes. I’ve been working to get the Patreon content caught up with the main episodes, usually releasing a few at once now. For $5 a month, you will get a personal thank you shout out during an episode, and your name will be added to a page on our website for those who support at that level. And finally, for this time behind the screen, I am planning to change our podcast hosting. Currently, we host with PodBean. PodBean has worked well for us so far and I would still recommend them to anyone starting their own podcast. However, there are some features and opportunities that we would gain by switching to LibSyn as our podcast host. Some things that LibSyn can do for us is get us into more catalogs, like spotify and they will bring our business cards to any relevant event that they are attending. This change has not been made yet, and probably wont until April. Ideally, this change will have no effect on you as a listener. I have already reached out to LibSyn for the steps I need to take in order to change things over and get redirects in place in a way that you will hopefully not even notice the change. Some warning up front though, if you notice we miss a release day and haven’t said anything about it, you may not have gotten the new feed correctly and will need to resubscribe. When this change happens, I intend to put a final episode only in the current podbean feed to let you know that the feed is no longer in use. If everything goes right, you will never see that episode. If you do, it means you need to resubscribe. Once the process has been started, I will let you know again.
Our adventurers make their way back through the under city, sure that they have no loose ends left to tie up. After a brief altercation in The Commons, they make their way back into Cyrin to find transport back to Thelnea. Though there is some debate over payment to easily return home. With Xanphia back safe in The Den, the group settles in for a meeting with Cassien. Check out our website! There you will find our full show notes with a full track listing for the music used in the episode. There is also a weekly blog on building the world of Erylia. If you like what we are doing, considering supporting the show on Patreon. For only $1 a month, you will gain access to our "Lost Archive", episodes that were recorded in a quality we weren't happy with. Your support helps pay for the shows hosting and will help to further improve it.
This week, we have another guest- Damian from Adventures in Erylia! We discuss what makes an NPC a DMPC, some of our favorite house rules, and a whole lot more. Come along for the ride! Question(s) discussed: 1. When does an NPC become a DMPC? And how hard should you work to stop an NPC from being integrated into the party? 2. What is your favourite campaign or table specific house rule? It doesn't have to be one that you always bring to the table, but perhaps one that really worked thematically with a certain campaign. SUMMARY Brit reveals to the group that he does, in fact, have a contact in Mieveht’s Undercity. After their meal, he offers to take them to The Rat’s Tail, a small bar in the Commons, owned by a black Tabaxi named Shift. He says that this will allow them to get into the Undercity to his contact and hopefully find their friend. But first, a quick stop at The Bank of Jeffery. Hello and welcome to Adventures in Erylia. My name is Damian and I am the dungeon master and editor for this show. Our show started with the group back in the middle of 2017. Back then, we were all still new to being recorded and I was still learning how to get set up for the show and how to edit things into an episode. It is now mid 2020. So much has changed, including how I feel about the editing of the show. If you are new to the show, you will notice a bit of a rollercoaster to the quality of our early episodes. I am currently going back and remastering episodes from the beginning up until Episode 7 of the Erylian Epic, which is where I really settled into the editing style of the show. These episodes are having their audio cleaned up, new music and ambiences added, and are having the cuts in the audio tightened for a better flow of the story. I just wanted to get this mini explanation out so that you are aware of the rolling change in audio quality and so that you can know that the audio doesn’t just get worse and stay there. Check for the [Remastered] tag at the end of an episode to know where I am at in this process. I am hoping to maintain the same biweekly schedule that the show has developed while I go through these. Episode 1 of the Mieveht Story has already been remastered as you are hearing this and should be next in the list for our show. A couple technical things for the process. Originally, our episodes were editing in Audacity. Audacity is a destructive editor so up until Episode 6 of our Mieveht Story, I am stuck working with the hard-edited files from way back. As a result, some of these first few episodes have some weird volume levels and EQ that I can only do so much to fix. This should get better after Episode 7, where I moved to Hindenburg journalist, which doesn’t have all of the edits baked into the files and I can redo those for the remaster. There is another step up in audio quality that is a little hard for me to track down, but at some point, I think in mid 2018, we got everyone on new microhpones.

SUMMARYAs our adventurers draw closer to Riven and The Guild Hall, members of the group start to think about the future of the party. With Rem staying in the cabin to keep Ariel company, she takes advantage of the private time with him to try and figure out his intentions with group and if he will stay with her after this mission is over. Meanwhile, Kenina seeks out Temptest to more directly ask her to join the guild and to continue on wherever their adventures take them.
