Host Ali Maxwell is joined by The Athletic's Michael Cox, Mark Carey and Liam Tharme to assess the concept of 'Ewing Theory' - the idea that any team can lose their star player and actually improve? How is this playing out in the Premier League so far this season, at Spurs after Kane... but also at West Ham after Declan Rice, Crystal Palace after Zaha and Brentford without Toney too? And can you become overly-reliant on a goalscorer in particular? The panel also find examples of the phenomenon on the continent and throughout recent history too. Things discussed: Ohio State vs Michigan recruiting: Maybe you guys don't want to be bragging that your scouting at OL and DB sucks. Like, it's not a flex that you didn't recruit Rod Moore, bro. Roebuck vs the the Andersons—you can say the twins are good fits for OSU if they develop into pass protectors, but if you ask St. Eds people, Roebuck's been their monster and Michigan's been on him for years…it's not like 3-stars vs two 4-stars is a fair representation. Is Ryan Day in trouble if he loses in Ann Arbor? The manner matters. Rod Moore says Ja'den McBurrows is one of the best man coverage guys on the team. He can hit. Don't pencil Amorion ahead of Ja'den. He's got to develop as a film junkie but everything else is falling into place. "Jyaire Hill is gonna play." I preview the recruiting  profile, because I *love* this pickup. Think that Minter is looking at playing simpler coverages because it accesses all of these young players' abilities. We saw two busts in the spring game (Sabb and Hill) when their switching broke down. "Denard on defense." Linebacker is night and day: they have a full two-deep plus Partridge. Up front: seems like edge is a 4-3/3-4 platoon with McGregor/Stewart in the 40 sets and D.Moore/Harrell for 3-4. Portal shopping: Kicker, maybe a corner. Sam says receiver but we like what they have there. Tight end maybe? How about a fullback. Find a guy named Mack Stockbaker to be a pure fullback. Recruiting: Last guy in the picture: Prieskorn is M-OSU-PSU, with PSU the biggest fear, but none of the guys who developed those TEs are still there. Going for six guys on the OL: figure Guarnera is the center and then a 6th guy is a battle of 4 or 5 guys, like Max Anderson, Brandon Baker coming to visit, Bennett Warren might have M in the lead, Michael Uini almost put out a commitment graphic. Getting Sherrone done with OL recruiting by the end of June is great because he can help in other recruitments. Cole Cabana as a returner? Sure, but this year it's AJ Henning. Basketball: Hunter looks like he's going to sign with Kansas, which is where you sign if it's about the money because Kansas does not get outbid. Why are fans sour on Hunter? Ewing Theory potential: Michigan needs to find another guy who can play center but Tarris Reed and their portal pickups are all defensive guys. Olivier Nkamhoua? Sentiment from Tennessee is he'd rather be a pro, and college is a fallback option. Primarily a four but could slide to the five better than Tray Jackson. Hockey developments: Like the Warren pickup, ideal guy to pair with Edwards on the 2nd pairing so Truscott and Casey can be your top pair. If they get the Hobey Baker winner back they're going to have two of the best lines in hockey. Baseball: Tracy Smith has done a good job so far—seems more like Indiana Smith than ASU Smith.

In addition to our new partnership with Underdog Fantasy, we are also excited to announce that YKB regular Sam Sheehan (@NBABabySecret) will be joining You Know Ball as the full time co-host. No, this is not a bit. We are being serious. He is the new YKB co-host. In his first episode as co-host Sam and I talked about the shit show that is the Brooklyn Nets. Yesterday it was announced that head coach Steve Nash would be fired after the team started the season 2-5. Then less than two hours later it was announced that suspended Celtics coach Ime Udoka would be the new head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. Oh, and by the way Kyrie posted some anti Semitic movie on Twitter and did not apologize for it. And Ben Simmons has missed back to back games after an awful start. Probably nothing. Can the Nets season be salvaged? Meanwhile the Sixers have won three in a row to get back to .500 on the season! Tyrese Maxey scored a career high vs. the Toronto Raptors (again lol), Joel Embiid hit a game winner and remains undefeated vs. the Chicago Bulls and James Harden destroyed the Washington Wizards. The team is 2-0 without Joel Embiid which I did not think was possible? Are we smelling some Ewing Theory potential here House?? Also the NBA did some dumb tampering charges against the Sixers where they lost second round picks in 2023 & 2024 so we talked about that as well. Montrezl Harrell has been surprisingly good? De'Anthony Melton is a god level role player. The Sixers are a good team and should have a better record. It's still fire Doc Rivers til I die. Then we talk about the team we love to hate the most, the Miami Heat! We talked about the Heat potentially missing their window to contend after their (now) 3-5 start that the NBA media seems to be conveniently ignoring? But Jimmy Butler still thinks they are going to be NBA champions still? After making fun of them for a little we discussed how the Heat can salvage the Butler era and actually get back into the championship conversation. Enjoy! Pies and The Producer back on the airwaves brought to you by the wonders of the NBN. After a couple of weeks of watching only the Olympics we're back watching regular sport again. In the NRL Brendan found some interesting rule interpretations and application of the laws of the game. While Josh was puzzled by how little Newcastle use Kalyn Ponga. The AFL have a dream fixture with the Top 4 sides playing off for the Minor Premiership and jockeying for positions. The rest of the Top 8 is not locked in with GWS and Essendon needing to win to maintain their spots. The Giants will have to spoil the Eddie Betts farewell match. While the Bombers face the might of Collingwood. West Coast and Fremantle are waiting to pounce if either slips up. Supercars have rejigged their season and released the last rounds. Bathurst has been pushed back to November with a Summer Gold Coast 500 if you can get into Queensland! The English Premier League kicked off this weekend. Most of the big clubs started with wins. Manchester United and Chelsea looked really good. Liverpool are a lot stronger with actual centre backs available for selection. And Tottenham have massive Ewing Theory potential if Harry Kane does ship out for the reported 150 million price tag. Meanwhile Man City stumbled at the first hurdle. But it's early days. Finally we whip around the grounds for other sports. MLB had their first ever Field of Dreams game and it was spectacular. The NBA Summer League has unearthed a few fun rookies. NFL is into preseason and kicks off in 3 weeks. And India took a 1-0 lead over England in the test series. 0:00:00 - NRL 1:08:00 - AFL 1:29:00 - Motorsport 1:34:00 - EPL 1:47:00 - Other Sport, MLB, NBA, NFL, Cricket Part of the No Phony Podcast Network nophonynetwork.com Twitter - @batsandballspod Brendan - @The Producer05 Josh - @PiesJosh Colbee - @colbee6ref Hammer - @notbatting11 Mendy - @BigMendy180 Maybo - @maybo83 Erik - @ErikNielsen2759 No Phony Network - @NoPhonyNetwork Email - batsandballspodcast@gmail.com facebook.com/batsandballspodcast http://batsandballspodcast.com/

Host Ian Hartitz breaks down how present-day quarterbacks have performed without the services of their No. 1 wide receiver. The main lesson for the day: correlation doesn't imply causation. Football is such a random sport and features a small sample size; be careful about honing in on one single variable. With that said, Ian does believe there's an argument to be made that the "Ewing Theory" could apply to a team losing their alpha target-hog receiver. Ian only finds five applicable instances of a quarterback missing their No. 1 receiver for an ample amount of time, but does seem to believe Matt Ryan's performance without Julio Jones could be actionable in fantasy land ahead of 2021. Example from last season: Josh Allen (1:55) Why some QBs get better without their WR1 (2:53) Setting the parameters (4:10) Baker has been better without OBJ (6:10) Mahomes has better YPA without Tyreek: something or nothing? (8:27) Drew Lock without Sutton is inconclusive (10:05) Aaron Rodgers without Davante is similar to Mahomes-Tyreek (10:42) What Matt Ryan without Julio tells us (11:06) Where to draft Matt Ryan (14:08)

Topher asks Travis what he thinks of the Rams and teams who player in the Super Bowl and the closing of their "window". To finish off the show, Travis gives us the offense and defense fits for this coaching staff, he drops a Preston Williams nugget...FINS UP Twitter: @cochran108 @Jmendel94 @MiaInTheHunt @WingfieldNFL iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/in-the-hunt-dolphins-podcast/id1397618792?mt=2 Google Play: https://playmusic.app.goo.gl/?ibi=com.google.PlayMusic&isi=691797987&ius=googleplaymusic&apn=com.google.android.music&link=https://play.google.com/music/m/Iloax7d3niaxtbpif6mcr3n2wnm?t%3DIn_the_Hunt_Dolphins_Podcast%26pcampaignid%3DMKT-na-all-co-pr-mu-pod-16 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3WyXQhD3JsixiJrOy5t1Er  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/in-the-hunt-dolphins-podcast/in-the-hunt-a-miami-dolphins-podcast

The Ewing Theory is an improvisational rock band heavily influenced by the 60s and 70s' masters of rock, blues, folk, and soul music. They bring an exciting energy to the stage and pride themselves on never playing a show the same way twice. TET formed out of the ashes of a trio featuring drummer/vocalist Evan Walker and guitarist/vocalist Joe Redmond called The Green Fuzz. Bassist, Mike Ryva, rounded out the project in early 2011. Joe and Evan have also kept busy recently performing with The Future Laureates and Bassel the Supernaturals.
