Dr. Rakesh Jain & Sherland Peterson Discuss Tardive Dyskinesia

Currently, more than 14 million Americans have a serious mental illness, such as bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and schizophrenia, conditions that can be treated with antipsychotic medicines. Use of these medicines has increased 22%, increasing the risk for developing a debilitating chronic movement condition called tardive dyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia can cause debilitating uncontrollable and repetitive movements that can make eating, drinking and walking difficult. While tardive dyskinesia can be treated, integrating new medicines into any existing treatment plan can be challenging. Sometimes regimens can become complex causing patients to feel overwhelmed and give up on treatment or go without treatment entirely. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new treatment formulation – one pill, taken once-daily – that could help the millions of Americans living with a serious mental illness whose antipsychotic medications may cause this condition. This new formulation of an established treatment can be integrated into existing mental health treatment plans. On tonight's show, Rakesh Jain, MD, MPH, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech University School of Medicine is joining me to discuss tardive dyskinesia, its impact on peoples' lives and the importance of this treatment formulation and Sherland Peterson is sharing her experience with TD, and how it has impacted her quality of life.

In Vidal v. Elster (the “Trump Too Small” case), the Supreme Court unanimously upheld a federal limitation on registering trademarks that include other people’s names. All the Justices agreed that, though the limitation was content-based, it didn’t need to be judged under strict scrutiny. But behind this unanimity was a major rift about whether the Court should decide these matters by focusing on history and tradition, or should instead build on more recent precedents such as those dealing with “limited public forums.” Which is the better approach – and which is the one most likely to gain majority support in the future?Featuring:Prof. Barbara Lauriat, Associate Professor of Law & Dean’s Scholar in Intellectual Property, Texas Tech University School of LawProf. Lisa Ramsey, Professor of Law, University of San Diego School of LawProf. Eugene Volokh, Gary T. Since 2009, CenterPeace has hosted a national conference featuring keynote speakers such as Justin Lee and Matthew Vines. Amber shares what it means to divest from white supremacy, how racial capitalism affects Black people, Black pain being profitable, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) being trendy. Amber also shares:   why we must speak about pay inequity in the workplace why labor is not aspirational silence being a tool for white supremacy. Amber is an attorney, speaker, writer, abolitionist. These are just a few words that describe Amber Webb Sims. Asa trial lawyer with nearly 100 first chair jury trials, Amber is among the top attorneys in Texas as measured by actual cases tried. But her gift and passion are empowering people through making complicated, intimidating information understandable, engaging, practical, and fun. This passion has extended beyond the courtroom to topics such as theology, politics, and social justice. After graduating from The Hockaday School in 2003, Amber got a B.A. in Political Science from The George Washington University. Afterwards, she obtained her Doctor of Jurisprudence, cum laude, from Texas Tech University School of Law. She worked briefly as an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas County during the tenure of Craig Watkins, the first African-American elected District Attorney in the State of Texas. Her primary field of practice is insurance defense litigation, and Amber has worked in a top insurance defense law firm as well as for three of the largest carriers in the country. Amber currently works as Assistant Vice President, Senior Legal Counsel in Litigation for AT&T, and her responsibilities include handling personal injury, premises liability, catastrophic loss, wrongful death, and commercial dispute cases in the six states that make up old Southwestern Bell. In her spare time, Amber co-hosts the Broke-ish podcast with Erika Brown, and they discuss the systemic and interpersonal impacts of racism and injustice on the Black community. She also regularly appears on radio shows, virtual events, and churches – discussing a wide range of issues. She lives in Prosper, Texas with her husband, kids, and crazy dog.

She is a TEDx speaker and author of multiple academic journal articles. Dr. Kelley is a first-generation college graduate. She began her postsecondary studies at the community-college level. Those studies culminated with earning her Ph.D. as a full-time student while also balancing a full-time career. She now teaches community-college students beginning their own academic journeys. Dr. Kelley has practiced martial arts throughout her life. She enjoys instructing her students, speaking at conferences, and writing about how law and literature teach us about who we are, as a society. In this episode… So, you're a lawyer, and a Ph.D.? You must be an elitist, right? Well, not if you're a kid from Muleshoe, Texas! In this episode of An Unconventional Life, Dr. Erin Kelley shares with Dr. Russell Strickland the fascinating story of her unlikely journey from small town to law school; the gentle nudge the bar exam provided, again and again; and how she ultimately found her true calling by uniting her two passions. It's easy to look at some folks and think that they've got the world on a string. Well, Dr. Kelley wants you to know that making it look easy doesn't come easy! The real search sometimes begins when you think you've reached your goal. That's OK, because the rewards far exceed the effort! To paraphrase Dr. Kelley, think about who you were, who you are, and who you want to be. Keep striving for your goals, and before you know it, people will be wondering how you make it look so easy!

While attending Texas Tech, he was selected to be the first medical student in an exchange program with Jinan University Medical School in mainland China. This was Dr. Mitchell's first exposure to Alternative Therapies. Dr. Mitchell also studied Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine at the University of Alberta, Canada. While at Texas Tech, he was awarded a Fellowship in Cardiovascular Pharmacology and did Ph.D. work under the world-renowned Physiologist PKT Pang, Ph.D. Dr. Mitchell worked with Dr. Pang on the Patho-Physiology of Hypertension. Following his residency, Dr. Mitchell became an ER Physician. It was during this time that he developed hypertension and arthritis. Suffering from severe side effects from the prescription medications, he revisited the philosophies he had learned in China of biochemical rebalancing with diet and supplements and was able to improve both conditions. This led him to search for doctors trained in nutritional medicine. The first step was studying nutritional medicine with pioneer Hugh Riordan, M.D., in Wichita, Kansas at the Center for Healing Arts. Then, he studied Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy with Oprah's favorite Gynecologist, Christiane Northrup, M.D. In 1994, he attended one of the famous Wright/Gaby lecture series conducted by Jonathan Wright, M.D. and Alan Gaby, M.D. This was a pivotal point for Dr. Mitchell as he developed a lasting friendship with Dr. Wright as well as falling under his mentorship. Building on this foundation over the years, Dr. Mitchell has become an authority on Nutritional Medicine and Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapies in his own right In addition to his many alternative medicine protocols, Dr. Mitchell has recently embarked on extensive studies on autism and has some promising information to share. Good morning Listeners, Today I have a very special guest, Roger Fan, the Chief Investment Officer and founder of RF Capital Management, llc. He graduated University of California, Davis with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology, Biology Emphasis and he earned his JD from Texas Tech University School of Law. Roger just launched his fund this past year in 2017 with a focus on investing in Asian and North American Equities. His fund adheres to the value investment principles. In this conversation we cover a wide range of investment topics from his investment philosophy, definition of risk, value traps, and being a fund manager and entrepreneur. Below is an excerpt from our conversation. RP: “What are your thoughts on value traps and how do you avoid them?” Roger Fan: “With value traps, it really goes back to doing the proper investment analysis. Value traps happen because there were gaps in your analysis and there were things that you missed. You did not do the proper valuation work. So I think intellectual honesty is a very important thing. You have to know what you know and know what you don’t know. You also have to realize there is a possibility that you don’t know what you don’t know. It is very important to be intellectually honest during the investment research process. I think I don’t agree with the term value trap; I think there are just investing mistakes. So it goes back to reading everything you can, being curious, doing the right work, doing the right valuation work. If you do everything right, you should have a really high batting average and your going to make mistakes but the beauty of this business is that you can be right about 2/3rds of the time and your still going to have an amazing track record. If you are right on your high conviction ideas. If you are right on all your 25 percent position ideas, your 20 percent ideas; your going to do well over the long term. So that is I would say how you avoid investing mistakes.” 1:06 – Tell me about your background and how you got started in investing? 7:02 – What is your overall investment philosophy? What attracted you to it and why? 9:21 – What are the investment strategies that you implement like shorts, options, special situations? 16:59 – Is there a particular industry or sector you specialize in or you just go where the opportunity is? 23:53 – How do you measure and define intrinsic value? 26:27 – How do you measure growth and is growth included in you intrinsic value calculation? 27:57 – How would you define and measure risk? 31:41 – What are your thoughts on value traps and how to avoid them? 33:28 – You recently launched your fund, can you tell me about that experience and what you have learned so far? 38:25 – Are there any lessons you learned being and entrepreneur and running a business on your own? 40:21 – Can you tell me about your daily activities and what you enjoy the most about running your own fund? 44:37 – Did you have any mentors and who did you look up to? 46:11 – Do you have any general favorite books? 48:30 – Closing thoughts Enjoy and thanks for the listen!

Should the U.S. Supreme Court be the court of the world? In the 18th century, two feuding Frenchmen inspired a one-sentence law that helped launch American human rights litigation into the 20th century. The Alien Tort Statute allowed a Paraguayan woman to find justice for a terrible crime committed in her homeland. But as America reached further and further out into the world, the court was forced to confront the contradictions in our country’s ideology: sympathy vs. sovereignty. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Jesner v. Arab Bank, a case that could reshape the way America responds to human rights abuses abroad. Does the A.T.S. secure human rights or is it a dangerous overreach? He has drafted agreements for numerous landowners who want to allow others to hunt on their property and even paid for college by guiding hunts. We discuss a number of issues to consider, including thoughts on whether hiring an attorney to draft a license is good practice, the difference between leases and licenses, key terms to include in a lease, and liability issues and waivers. Trace offered up several great restaurant recommendations.  He says the best high-end dining experience around is Bohannan's on Houston Street in San Antonio. The same chef owns Peggy's on the Green in Boerne, Texas.  Lastly, if you ever find yourself in Trace's hometown of Charlotte, Texas, he says Galindo's is the place to go for good Mexican food.   Contact info for Trace Blair (Email) tblair@wigrum.com  (Website) http://www.wigrum.com/attorneys/trace-blair/    Links to topics mentioned on the show - Texas State Bar Agricultural Law CLE - Ranchers Agricultural Leasing Handbook - Texas Agritourism Act FAQs - Texas Recreational Use Statute

Listener Sean asks: My question is, do you have any literature or information about athletes with low testosterone and how it affects their training. I've listened to your podcast about your own battle with Low T. Besides any supplements or medication, do you think it takes a guy like me, more time to reach the desired results due to my low testosterone? In my response to magnesium, I mention the oral magnesium and the topical magnesium that I personally use. Listener Patrick asks: "For a long distance training plan (like the Marathon/Triathlon Dominator) how much fitness is really gained in the last big month of volume. I'm on the Triathlon Dominator plan and am 3 weeks into the last 5 week kick of volume before the taper. I'd be interested to know how much all this volume really amounts to on race day. I get the feeling that it might not make much of a difference from a fitness perspective, but perhaps help a lot more from a mental perspective; enhancing things like visualization, self-esteem and self-confidence that your body can handle the stresses of race day." Listener Gabe asks: I'm on a budget, but committed to improving my health. If you had to choose (I know you don't ; ) would you take EnerPrime as a first priority, or is it needed if you were taking Living Fuel greens as a meal replacement? Also, speaking of budget, which supplements would you say are the MOST valuable in order of priority to start with (greens, multi vitamins, essential fats, etc)? I have less than $100 per month to work with for supplements; what would you do in this case? Both supplements Gabe mentioned can be found here. Listener Laurel asks: I just pulled something in my back doing squats without a squat rack-putting the weights down when I was done. I am trying to get my left quad back from an acl injury, and I think squats are some of the best exercises. Are there better (safer) ones to do at home? There are so many slang terms for exercises, is there a place to look them up? Balance exercises, one leg exercises, proprioception, etc. Good resource for exercises http://www.pacificfit.net/exercises.php and http://www.youtube.com/bengreenfieldfitness. Listener Patricks asks: What is your opinion on Very Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diets? In studying for the test and reading Volek & Forsythe's chapter on VLCKDs, they basically praise it to the skies as a new, cutting edge way to increase your metabolism and lose weight. "Studies support the notion that short-term VLCKDs are safe and effective in terms of promoting weight/fat loss, improving metabolic and cardivascular risk factors and are compatible with a physically active lifestyle ... there is sufficient scientific research to safely prescribe a VLCKD as an option to those people who prefer this approach..." They mean "compatible with a physically active lifestyle" in the sense that it "can adversely affect performance for the first week, but longer adaptation (4-6 weeks) to the diet does not significantly impair physical performance." Listener Jason has a call-in question about Ironman fueling, and I direct him to Triathlon Dominator. Listener Jennifer has a call-in question about circulation. During our interview, Dr. Fitt discusses: -the exact age that both men and women begin to lose hormones and suffer the results (hint: much younger than you think) -the enormously important link between iodide, thyroid, fungi, and chronic inflammation -the most common nutritional deficiencies Dr. Mitchell observes in his patients, and how he treats them -visual and body cues that could easily warn you of  potential signs of hypothyroidism, including why you need to pay attention to your toe and tongue temperature, and even the bags under your eyes -the best test for identifying hormone deficiences that could be leading to chronic fatigue and low energy levels -the top hormone deficiencies that many people aren't even aware could exist in their own bodies -Dr. Mitchell's top two recommended books for the average person to learn more about bio-identical hormone replacement -and much, much more! From listener Charles: "Ben, I am in fact lifting as you suggested- I'm actually very serious about including it my training routine.  I was wondering if you could suggest a way to set up my workout schedule- for example, I'm usually doing some sort triathlon training 6 days a week and am additionally lifting about 4.  But I'm not sure, to make real strength gains, what exercises I should really focus on and where I would want to keep my rep ranges?   I don't know if you care, but recently I have been getting into Crossfit workouts.  I think that creating a hybrid program that includes exercises of high weight and intensity/ low reps, followed by a Crossfit style workout might be the best for me." Resources mentioned in my answer: Top 12 Resistance Training Routines for Endurance Athletes 2. From listener Karen: "Do you have any opinions on ice baths or cold water soaks?" 3. From listener Sal: "I am a serious marathon runner, and I currently use creatine in my training. I use it for several reasons. 1) It seems to be relatively safe with no side effects 2) Ill take anything that helps recovery 3) I currently do lower body work and core work in the gym, and i believe creatine helps me build those muscles However, creatine also causes me to carry extra water weight. I have heard that creatine does this, and I have noticed it myself. I carry a substantial amount of water weight around my midsection. After a long run where I sweat alot, I can see my abs, but if I take creatine and go a day or so without sweating, there is alot of bloating in my abs. I am worried that during taper this will have a negative effect. When I rest for my marathon, should I stop taking creatine? Or do I need to stop a few weeks in advance to get it out of my system. I want to get the benefits of it without carrying extra weight during the race. Also, will there be any problems with stopping taking it, like withdrawal symptoms? I currently take about 5g after workotus and 3g on non workout days in the morning." Websites mentioned in my answer: CreO2 from Millennium Sports From Listener Kelsey: "I raced Ironman Canada last year and I've had some complications as a result.  After some terrible coaching and poor nutrition advice I had a very difficult race.  I gained more weight in the year I was training for IMC then I had in previous years sitting on the couch.  A month before IMC I was diagnosed with a stress fracture on both of my tibias, I cut back running for the last month and pushed myself through the run on race day.  As you can imagine the run was long and cold.  8 months later and the fracture is still far from healed.  I've moved to a new city and have been struggling to find medical support. I've been off running since the race, on my bike as often as possible but would love to heal these suckers soon.  Living in Victoria BC means I have access to some unbelievable running trails and it's killing me not to get on them Any recommendations for stretches, supplements (note: I have a diary allergy so I take a calcium, multi and Vit K daily) exercises anything that may help move this injury forward."
