The Pentagon says it's confirmed that Iran has given “a number of close-range ballistic missiles to Russia.” While Washington isn't sure exactly how many rockets are being handed over to Moscow, the U.S. Defense Department assesses that Russia could begin putting them to use within a few weeks, “leading to the deaths of even more Ukrainian civilians.” “One has to assume that if Iran is providing Russia with these types of missiles, that it's very likely it would not be a one-time good deal, that this would be a source of capability that Russia would seek to tap in the future,” Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Major General Pat Ryder told reporters on September 10. That same day, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in London that the new supply of Iranian missiles will allow Russia to use more of its own longer-range ballistic missiles for targets that are farther from the frontline. To find out where the Russian-Iranian partnership is headed and what, if anything, changes in the Ukraine War with Tehran sending ballistic missiles to Moscow, The Naked Pravda spoke to Dr. Nicole Grajewski, a fellow in the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and an associate researcher with the Belfer Center's Project on Managing the Atom at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. //The Wire//2130Z July 30, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: ISRAEL STRIKES BEIRUT. RIOTS CONTINUE IN VENEZUELA. CLIMATE ACTIVISTS ATTACK HEATHROW AIRPORT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: This morning Israel struck a residential building in Beirut. The target (a senior Hezbollah commander) was located in the Haret Hreik area, in the southeastern sector of the city. AC: As of this report, this appears to be an isolated strike and not a persistent bombing campaign. In Israel, mass demonstrations are underway resulting from the detention of 9 IDF soldiers who are accused of very seriously abusing a Palestinian detainee (who is now reportedly in a state of paralysis). The detention of these soldiers sparked immediate and kinetic riots, with demonstrators attempting to breach the perimeter defenses of two separate military bases where the soldiers were being held for questioning, in order to free the detained soldiers.AC: The abusive acts committed by some (or all) of these soldiers are too graphic and disturbing to describe in this report. Of note, most of the debate of these horrendous acts is not centered around whether or not the soldiers are guilty of the act, but rather whether or not the act itself is a crime. Very high-ranking Israeli politicians (to include National Security Minister Ben-Gvir, and MK Hanoch Milwidsky) have voiced support for the soldiers, taking the stance that such disturbing actions are justified and legal. Consequently, as distasteful and graphic as this incident is (and as unfathomable as it is for this incident to be the reason for unrest) the very kinetic demonstrations resulting from this incident have highlighted fractures between various factional elements within Israel.South America: Mass rioting and civil unrest is underway in Venezuela following the recent questionable election results. Factional allegiances have complicated the response around the nation. Some reports indicate varying police departments, some soldiers, and even local warlords opposing what is perceived as Maduro's bid to cling to power. Other reports indicate other police and military forces firing on demonstrators with live rounds. AC: Much of the reasoning for the unrest (and determining how much is related to political issues) remains complicated; some of the rioting is purely undertaken by opportunistic criminals, whereas other groups of armed individuals are exerting political dominance in their local areas. Much of the Venezuelan armed forces (particularly the senior leadership) has voiced support for Maduro, however pockets of soldiers are (in effect) defecting to resistance groups, or otherwise are refusing to target protesting civilians.United Kingdom: This morning climate activists vandalized London's Heathrow Airport by spraying paint throughout much of the Terminal 5 departure area. AC: One of the vandals is the same woman who vandalized a Vincent van Gogh painting in the National Gallery of London two years ago. She was convicted of this crime last Thursday. As she is potentially facing several years of imprisonment for the National Gallery attack, this was likely a motivating factor to double-down in serving the Just Stop Oil institution by committing one last attack before being out of commission. In Southport, another child has died following yesterday's stabbing attack. This brings the death toll for this attack to three, all of which were children. This afternoon riots broke out in Southport in response to authorities conducting information shaping operations to protect and conceal the identity of the assailant. At least one police vehicle was set on fire during the riot.-HomeFront-Iowa: Last night a train derailed in the community of Glidden. Local reports indicate at least three dozen cars catastrophically derailed, and recovery efforts are underway. No HAZMAT concerns were reported by Unio
Democratic Party factional war
Welcome to the latest episode of the Escape in the Cave podcast, #139, recorded on July 1st, 2024. This episode dives into the chaotic aftermath of Biden's disturbing performance. Todd dissects Biden's decline by comparing his sharpness in the 2012 VP debate against Paul Ryan to his recent ineptitude then raises critical questions about Biden's fitness for office, especially given the stark decline in his mental acuity just over the last couple of years. The discussion extends to the Democratic Party's responsibility and their handling of Biden's candidacy, emphasizing the critical need for a viable alternative rather than . Todd also explores the media's reaction in the wake of Biden's exposure, particularly CNN's panel, which starkly contrasted previous defenses of Biden. The episode also touches upon potential replacement candidates like Kamala "Of Color" Harris, Gretchen Whitmer, and Gavin Newsom, specifically criticizing Kamala Harris, reflecting on her past primary embarrassment and her suitability as Biden's successor as a DEI Pledge appointee. The episode concludes with a reflection on the state of American politics and the supposed "existential threat" posed by Donald Trump, as perceived by the Democratic Party and its media. How can anyone take their democratic doomsday claims seriously if Biden remains their opposition candidate? Amnesty International has called for the immediate release of the factional leader of Zimbabwe's opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (or Tripple C). Jameson Temba and dozens of his supporters were arrested last week over an alleged unsanctioned meeting. Amnesty deputy regional director Khanyo Farise says the group is also demanding a probe into reports that the detainees were tortured while in custody. The government denies the charge. Human rights attorney Kennedy Masiya tells VOA's Chinedu Offor that opposition activists in Zimbabwe are under siege.

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine VdL talks to Benjamin Friedman who, over a 20+ year career has navigated the perilous waters of startup finance and operations, riding the bumpy waves of startup growth and guiding his companies through successful M&A transactions, equity raises, and debt financing. To cap it all, Benjamin is a firm advocate for values such as collaboration, optimism, and open communication, and has consistently strived to connect company goals, team initiatives, and individual performance in his roles. KEY TAKEAWAYS At graduate school I'd studied nonprofit management and worked at a nonprofit for a few years and found it was very process driven, we kept talking about what to do but never actually trying things. I'm much more results oriented, so I moved into an e-commerce company which doubled every year and it was an amazing ride. I became addicted to the startup journey. A lot of startups have a unique journey, every founder is an individual, but there are some common themes. Successful startups have founders that are clear on who they are and what they're trying to accomplish. That might seem easy, but it's actually very hard work to regularly check in with yourself. The other application is around vision and values; those will remain constant even as the business pivots, evolves, changes and challenges occurring. The final piece is feedback loops, successful founders are constantly seeking advice from advisors, investors, other founders and their team, they're constantly seeking feedback – they may not act on it every time – new ideas and how to get things done. Align outcomes, results and activities. A lot of people get worked up by working really hard and spending a lot of time and effort but activity alone won't generate the outcomes that you're looking for, you have to see what results are coming from that activity and then you have to see if those are affecting the outcomes that you desire. Are you looking at it through industry metrics, internal metrics? You need to be constantly running experiments to see if ‘x' improves your quality, your efficiency for you or your customers. You have to constantly evaluate your process but aligning your activity results and outcomes is really critical. Bringing in fractional experts can do a number of things; they can help you look holistically across the business and make connections between different functions, how do sales, marketing, finance and product all connect and what are the ways to optimise them collaboratively to grow your business. How have things been done in the past and how can they be applied to your business in order to grow as fast as possible? Cost and risk are considerations as well, by looking at fractional resources you're mitigating both; you pay people who come in much less than someone doing the job full-time, especially if you don't know how they're going to work and how they'll fit with your team. BEST MOMENTS‘Being open to other people's opinions is going to make you stronger on your journey.'‘It's very important to balance strategy and implementation.'‘We often think about productivity as running fast, but if you're not sure of what direction you want to be running, it doesn't matter how fast you're going, you're going to be heading in the wrong direction.'‘Unsuccessful founders keep doing the same thing their customer needs, successful ones ask “what is it you need now?” and they'll provide that.' Got a high credit score? Your mortgage could get more expensive. And no, this episode isn't releasing on Opposite Day. New mortgage rules are incentivizing those with poor credit while punishing those that have built up their credit. And while this may seem like we're venturing back to the days of subprime mortgages, there may be some real reasoning behind this newest mortgage rule change. Welcome to the 100th episode of On the Market! It's been a year since our first episode, and thanks to Dave, Henry, James, Jamil, and Kathy, we've rocked the charts with some of the most up-to-date real estate data around. This time, Dave and our panel of guests will share their favorite episodes and go over some of the latest headlines affecting the housing market. First, we'll touch on how mortgage rules have changed and why high credit score borrowers could be in the crosshairs for more expensive fees. Next, California targets the upper-middle-class, kind-of-wealthy, but not-so-ultra-rich residents with their newest “mansion tax,” which targets houses that aren't exactly mansions! Finally, a fractional ownership debate and an update on the latest landlord law that could give tenants more property protections. Thanks for joining us for 100 episodes of On the Market! And special thanks to our producer, Kailyn Bennett, for making it all happen. Here's to 100 more episodes! In This Episode We Cover New mortgage updates that could hurt high credit score borrowers California's “mansion tax” and how it could affect far more than the “ultra-rich” Factional real estate investing and whether owning a “share” of a rental will ever beat buying properties Colorado's latest landlords law proposal that could change the way you do leasing Homeownership for all and how unaffordability is putting pressure on lawmakers The On the Market panel's favorite episodes of all time! The UK's Ministry of Defence has given its daily update on the war in Ukraine. It says the Kremlin's appointment of hard-line General Sergei Surovikin to lead forces in Ukraine is probably an effort to improve the delivery of the operation. The MoD says however, he may have to contend with an increasingly factional and poorly resourced Russian defence ministry. It's thought that General Alexandr Dvornikov did hold this role between April and August, although it's not clear how much control he held over the often disparate and competing groupings of forces.
Do you ever think about the time before mobile phones? The era of calling your the landline in your mate's house, only for their mum to answer. "Can I talk to Jimmy, please?" "Is that Tom? OK, I'll get Jimmy." "... JIMMY! JIMMY! TOM IS ON THE PHONE." "Hello." "Hello. Do you want to come round my house?" "... MUM! CAN I GO ROUND TOM'S HOUSE?" "... ARE YOU HAVING TEA THERE?" "Mum says am I having tea there?" "... MUM, CAN JIMMY HAVE TEA HERE?" "... YES." "Yes." "OK." "OK." "Bye." We had such wonderful conversations on phones, before everything became texts and WhatsApp messages. My granddad didn't even talk to his friends using a landline. He used a CB radio. "Mike, this is Tom. Over (note: everyone in my family is called Tom!)" "Mike, this is Tom. Over." "Tom, this is Mike. Over." "Hello, Mike. Over." "Did you watch the football? Over." "Yes. Over." "Ian Rush is a C**T! Over." "C**T! Over" My granddad had such wonderful conversations on his CB radio, before everything became texts and WhatsApp messages. His mind would have blown had he realised what future lay ahead for phones. Anyway. Welcome to VG247's The Best Games Ever Podcast: Ep.20 - The best game you played on your phone. Please do let us know what you think of the show – and if this is your first time listening, do go back to listen to the previous episodes. If you've got suggestions for topics, we'd love to hear them. If you're a Billcliffe fan (I've heard there are some), he'll be back on soon, so stop messaging me about him. “What is VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast?” you ask while wondering how I remembered, verbatim, those conversations from 30 years ago. I'll level with you. Those conversations came out of my brain about five minutes ago. But they are accurate in tone, feel, and language. Anyway, this podcast, which is why you're on this page, is essentially a 30-minute panel show where people (me and some others on VG247) decide on the best game in a specific category. That's it. It's good. Listen to it. We've got some details on the show's content below (if you want to get a refresher before heading to the comments to make a wonderful, considered post or don't want to listen but do want to know what games we picked), so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll past this warning. W A R N I N G The best game you played on your phone This is the topic of Episode twenty of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Here's a rundown of who picked what. Tom - New Star Soccer Before mobile phone games became all fancy pants, New Star Soccer blazed the way with simple, but perfect touchscreen gameplay, tidy management simulation mechanics, and that hard to pin-down moreishness. It was simply brilliant, and the game I've put more hours into on a phone than any other. Alex – Retro Bowl Retro Bowl is an astonishingly good game, a great expression of what made the classic 8-bit arcade-era sports games great, compressed down to a mobile game that ultimately feels surprisingly deep despite its simple presentation and budget price. I'd heartily recommend it to anyone - fan of American Football or not. But better still, honestly, is my personal connection to this game, where it was directly responsible for keeping me sane during an enormously stressful 48 hours. It's brilliant, but if keeping your head screwed on while you're trapped away from home as the world crumbles around you isn't a great demonstration of mobile gaming, I don't know what is. Connor – Pokemon Go I know it was the obvious pick, but Pokemon Go stood out to me as the best phone game I've ever played, and the only one that actually got me out and, well, mobile. As opposed to sitting away at home tapping away. It really was in its early days an explosive entity in the gaming space. Everyone was playing — everyone! You, me, your work mates, your boss, my boss (probably). Everyone has their own stories of seeing crowds of people walking around, face in phones, searching for pokemon. In those early days, before Niantic figured out people were walking Looney Toons style into pits and across construction sites, there was a real wild energy about the bloody thing. Factional rivalries were real: not online weak sauce cosmetic beef, I'm talking the real deal! You could see those suckers on the other team, you could spot them walk up and claim a spot, and you could stair them down as you took it back. Glorious, social gaming. The mobile platform at its best. Come back in a week for another episode of VG247's Best Games Ever Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There's a madness in the media and hard to see when it will stop. The Prime Minister has returned from the recent NATO meeting – which included a visit to Ukraine – and the media wanted to create a false equivalence and criticised Anthony Albanese for spending too much time overseas. Why? Because they criticised former Prime Minister Scott Morrison, when he made his secret family holiday trip to Hawaii while half of Australia was burning away in 2019. So, it's time to criticise Albanese too, even though the circumstances are completely different.Which, of course, lead to other media outlets outlining how Albanese was now having to defend these criticisms. It's a circular referral system that helps create the news, assorted click-bait, and continues that tradition of legacy media holding a Labor government to account in ways they never apply to conservative governments. And this style of reporting is becoming as irrelevant as the mainstream media, who seem to be enjoying their descent into a sea of insignificance. And the factional problems within the Liberal are slowing being exposed and it's becoming clearer that these interplays between the moderates, centre right and conservatives, was one of the key causes of the defeat of the Liberal–National Coalition: Not the only reason; there was still a great amount of room for the other factors – inaction on climate change, incompetence, mismanagement, corruption. It's also the end of NAIDOC week and how close are we to achieving a Voice to Parliament? While the conditions are possibly the most propitious they have been for many years, there is still a long way to go. The biggest problem is that to achieve constitutional legal change where land rights or legal rights given back to the original owners of this land, it has to be agreed to by the people that took it away in the first place. That's not right. And who has the mandate on climate change? Labor – which wants to implement a 43% reduction target by 2030; or the Australian Greens, who want to implement a 75% reduction target? They can both claim legitimacy, but the issue here is that Labor is the government and holds 77 seats, to the Greens total of four seats; but to balance this out, the Greens hold the balance of power in the Senate and Labor needs their Senate support to pass legislation. How this will be resolved is anyone's guess, but surely the greater incentive is to act in the interest of the public and end the climate change wars?

Why are the major parties still squabbling over the preselection of some candidates, with an election due to be called within weeks? The Party Room's Fran Kelly, Patricia Karvelas and their guest — 7.30 chief political correspondent Laura Tingle — also ponder spending pressures ahead of the budget, Labor tensions in the wake of the sudden death of Senator Kimberley Kitching and Coalition nerves over the ALP's big victory in the SA state election.

SPRINGER, NM: THE GREAT AMERICA OF 1882-1897 Springer, a town of about a thousand residents in far northern New Mexico, some sixty miles south of the Colorado state line, seems like a small and quiet place where not much happens. Yet, it has a certain charm that continues to attract tourists and retirees. Much of this has to do with a downtown of stately and elegant buildings, in particular the prominent two-story brick courthouse, which speak to a time when the town was more prominent, and had a central role in some of the most momentous events of the nineteenth century southwest. Springer was the seat of Colfax County in 1882-1897, in the midst of one of the most bitter and violent conflicts of the era. The Colfax County War pitted Hispano and Anglo settlers against the Maxwell Grant and Railroad Company. The area was included in an enormous land grant dating back to Mexican times, which was acquired by the first of a series of groups of foreign investors in 1870. Conflict arose when the new owners attempted to evict the settlers, who were suddenly seen as squatters, even though they themselves understood that they had the right to be there. The Utes and Jicarilla Apaches whose tenure predated everybody else, were not part of the discussion. The conflict attracted the attention of the Santa Fe Ring, a powerful clique of attorneys and real-estate investors who controlled the Territory, who sided with the Company, bringing the full force of the Government, including the Army, to bear on the settlers. The County Seat was moved to Springer 1882 from a previous location because the railroad and the Company moved its headquarters and the leadership there was seen as more favorable to the Ring. Factional violence continued to plague the County. One of the most spectacular confrontations occurred in March, 1885, when Sheriff's deputies loyal to the Company faced a large party of armed settlers led by future U.S. Congressman George Curry on the courthouse lawn in Springer, leaving two settlers dead. While the conflict seems the stuff of cinema, a movie of the feud would be disappointing. Though figures like legendary gunfighter Clay Allison fell in with the settlers, there was no man on a white horse riding in to lead the humble sodbusters to victory over the villainous corporation. In fact, the Company ultimately won, their ownership of the land confirmed by an 1887 Supreme Court case. Many of the settlers, out-gunned and with no legal recourse, moved on. By 1897, the railroad had moved its operations to Raton, some forty miles away, and nearby coal mines there had attracted investment and settlers. Furthermore, the local leadership was largely favorable to the Company. Now out-voted, Springer lost the county seat after a bitter political fight. Some historians say that Springer went into “decline” after losing the seat, but in a southwest littered with ghost towns this does not seem fair. Springer remained a small but vital community. Arguably, the fact that it no longer attracts the attention that it did during its heyday, when it was the focus for major historical events, might be the reason why it retains a picturesque downtown that recalls a colorful past. -Tom Prezelski, Resident Historian

Factional infighting ruled Westminster this week as two of its most divisive figures returned to the front pages. For Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings leaving the No.10 team offered a chance to reset his government, only for another bout of isolation after coming into contact with an MP infected with coronavirus thwarting him.But in Labour, the reinstatement of former leader Jeremy Corbyn after his comments on the anti-Semitism report presented Keir Starmer with a dilemma in trying to unify the Labour Party, but has his decision to remove the whip from his predecessor just ended up just solidifying division? Corbyn-backing Labour MP Ian Lavery joins Arj Singh, Paul Waugh and Rachel Wearmouth to give his opinion on the week in Westminster.Make sense of politics. A Beijing mansion belonging to movie star Jackie Chan has been seized by authorities and is now being put up for auction. Details are still thin, but some analysts believe Jackie Chan may have been targeted for alleged tax evasion, related to promotions he did from 2006 to 2008 for a land company in Beijing, which paid him 20.6 million renminbi that was directly converted into credit for his purchase. Yet, questions are being raised on why now, given that Jackie Chan’s family lived in the home for 13 years. And why have Beijing authorities seemingly ignored Jackie Chan’s influence in China, Hong Kong, and even in the United States, especially given his relative positive stance on the Chinese leadership, in order to seize and auction his mansion. The move may be related to factional battles within the Party. Jackie Chan’s ties are through the network of former vice chairman Zeng Qinghong, who was under the Jiang Faction. This is the main faction fighting with the faction of Xi Jinping, the current head of the Party. The timing of this move appears to be related to the recent end of the Party's high level Beidaihe meeting, after which Xi Jinping launched new purges targeted areas of society still controlled by the Jiang faction. Guest: Tom Luongo. We talk about factional wars among the powers that be, the Ghislaine Maxwell and Epstein case, the Southern District of New York (SDNY) federal prosecutor’s office and Brexit (meaning the larger battle between the EU and the US/UK). We attempt to analyze how these things are related and could provide a higher level understanding of some of the scandals and chaos we are witnessing in the run up to the 2020 election and Brexit and the chaos that has escalated to more extreme and public levels since the 2016 election. There is also a bonus episode for patrons (Ep 174BONUS Getting Started With Crypto & Gold) on getting started with investment in cryptocurrency and gold for those who might be considering alternative investments in periods of instability. Tom Luongo is an analyst, writer and a former research chemist. His specialty is markets analysis informed by geopolitics. He is a libertarian and Austrian economist who publishes a blog Gold Goats ‘n Guns and a monthly investment letter. He contributes at Newsmax Media and is published by and does commentary for many other media outlets. Note: Tom and I are very different politically but we believe in finding common ground especially on war/foreign policy and also on some other very basic things. No doubt his listeners will be aggravated with me and mine with him to some extent but common ground is more important than ever and I also want to provide a variety of voices on this podcast. We already have too many echo chambers and hyperpartisanship, in my view, which are doing more harm than good. Another note: I have to apologize for the audio quality in this interview. I think we both had some internet issues that caused some audio issues which I fixed as best I could. We had to stop and start a couple times. I edited a lot of the worst problems and hopefully it’s fairly easy to listen to now despite the problems. FOLLOW Tom at @TFL1728. Iran will hold legislative (2020) and presidential elections (2021) under heavy unilateral sanctions imposed by the US after withdrawing from the JCPOA. The processes will serve to measure the capacity of the current pragmatic-reformist governmental coalition to remain in power in the midst of heightened international, regional and domestic tensions, resulting from the latest developments in the Persian Gulf waters, and the demonstrations taking place in Iran after the elimination of fuel subsidies. The talk featured in this episode addresses the current factional scheme, the future prospects in face of the upcoming electoral processes, and the possible implications for Iranian foreign policy.
Factional violence and civil war have prevented Libya from transitioning to a secure, democratic government in the eight years since Qaddafi’s fall. But USIP’s Nathaniel Wilson says the path to peace still exists, and that “these kinds of generational revolutions take more time than that to play out.”
