In this episode we had a very open, honest conversation about how the role of a fitness professional has changed with the current state of the world. The skills required to stand out from the crowd aren't things taught in the gym. We talked speaking, program design, pricing yourself what you are worth, and how the coach and client relationship has changed. We wrapped up by talking about how coaches need coaches, and by not wanting to hire someone to overlook your own training/nutrition, it shows you maybe don't believe in your own product. We discuss the importance of that.

Vigor Life Podcast · EP112: Business & Mindset Wisdom from 20 Years of Coaching & Gym Ownership w/ Alwyn Cosgrove I’ve known Alwyn Cosgrove for close to 13 years, after meeting him while attending one of his mentorship programs. Alwyn has been a big influence in my development as a gym owner and is considered an O.G. in both coaching and gym ownership. A couple of weeks ago he and his wife (and business partner) Rachel celebrated the 20 year anniversary of Results Fitness. It has also been named one of America's Top Gyms by Men's Health a number of times. In this episode Alwyn and I dive into what works in the real world of coaching, helping clients get results and stay for years and years, as well as how to build a great culture and fitness business. This is a must listen if you current run or aspire to run your own gym. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN Why having a fun time, culture, and getting people to want to come back is critical in getting clients long-term results. The KEY components to building a powerful culture; where you can do a lot of things and still do good. Why Alwyn thinks high intensity conditioning is a better fit for fat loss results than lower intensity training (despite the research and views coming out lately). The foundational things you MUST get right to help clients get results over and over again. What to do after someone has reached their goal; which they will if you’re doing the right things. Alwyn shares how he creates a lifelong growth focus with his clients. Our thoughts on programming for semi-private training and larger group training and what gets better results. How mood and excitement can affect a training session and what you can do to affect mood in a training session. An exercise that helps you determine which values are important to you and how to build your core values. Why no one can steal your clients, but you can lose clients. We outline the four coaching fence posts that must be erected to keep clients from leave. How Alwyn beat cancer and how it forced him to create systems. He shares his thoughts on “the e-myth vs. Linchpin.”Why the best coaches are clients that have had a big transformation and believe in the culture, and how to develop them. Some powerful questions that you haven’t asked yourself that will create better systems. The one thing you can’t do right now; which is also THE most important thing. Why public speaking and getting great in front of the camera is SO important now and moving into the future.Tactics and strategies to become a local expert. In this podcast we talk about how he has created a system in which to break down what many people do intuitively when first meeting a prospective new member or client. He goes over the way in which he breaks down people's characteristics into four archetypes and then uses those archetype qualities to connect on a personal level so that everyone feels listened to and understood. Elias has an insane amount of passion; my favorite quote from this podcast is "Thats what we are doing in the fitness industry. Were not helping people lose weight you’re helping people save their marriages, you’re saving them from heart attacks you’re making them confident in the board room you’re making them confident in PTA meetings you’re making them dominate their field. Alwyn Cosgrove, co-author of The New Rules of Lifting, fought stage-four cancer twice, and won. He's also created one of the world's most successful gyms and fitness communities, Results Fitness. (Oh, and he's a Tae Kwon Do guy, like me. So, that's cool.) I brought Alywn on to ask him how he did it. From launching a successful (and, at the time, controversial) book franchise that made people think twice about "conventional cardio" to creating systems for a thriving fitness business, and more.

Many guys devote so many hours to lifting weight yet end up with so little to show for it. In many cases the problem is simple: they aren't doing exercises based on the movements their bodies were designed to do. Six basic movements - the squat, deadlift, lunge, push, pull and twist - use all of the body's major muscles. And, more important, they use those muscles in coordinated action, the way they were designed to work. The New Rules of Lifting, now in paperback and with more than one hundred photographs, gives you more than a year's worth of workouts based on these six basic movements. Whether you're a beginner, an experienced lifter looking for new challenges, or anything in between, you can mix and match the workouts to help you get bigger, stronger and leaner. In addition, the comprehensive nutritional information provided makes The New Rules of Lifting a complete guide to reaching all your goals. For episode 40 we're pulling back the curtain to see what successful fitness operations and new technologies are creating loyal customers from the co-owner of one of the top 10 gyms in the United States, Rachel Cosgrove from Results Fitness. For all sizes of clubs across the industry, we realize now more than ever how truly important it is for operators to focus on personalized communication and engagement through social media, email, and text to meet the demands of the fast-evolving customer experience our members are asking for.  In this show, you'll learn from Rachel why she believes it's the hand-crafted emails and time-capped Facebook contests that can deliver high value to members outside the club, what lessons she's learned from over 20 years in fitness, what are the best practices in the transitions from trainer to a successful operator, and why the boomer generation are now requesting more text communication for fitness as their digital literacy increases. It's clear that even with a high performing facility like Results Fitness and many others, there are still some very large gaps to be filled when it comes to integrating technology solutions seamlessly into both the fitness professional's toolbox and to a customer's journey. But what does one of the top 10 gyms in America do to for both human touch and technology integration for successful fitness operations? The answer to that question and much more takeaways for club owners, operators, and fitness pros in this episode with Rachel Cosgrove.  About Rachel Cosgrove  Rachel Cosgrove is the co-owner of Results Fitness, voted one of the top 10 gyms in the United States three years in a row by Men’s Health Magazine. She is a consultant for Nike, on the advisory board for Livestrong.com and Women's Health Magazine, and is a featured columnist for Women’s Health Magazine and the Huffington Post. Rachel is the best selling author of the "The Female Body Breakthrough," and has also been featured in numerous magazines including Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Oxygen and many many more including Dr. Oz.  As one of the featured speakers for Perform Better, she lectures nationally and internationally on topics such as strength training, fat loss, business in the fitness industry and nutrition specifically for women helping them to reach their potential in all aspects of their life. She is also the best-selling author of the book, Drop Two Sizes: A Proven Plan to Ditch the Scale, Get the Body You Want & Wear the Clothes You Love. Extremely goal oriented, Rachel is always looking for a new physical challenge and draws from experience making her a better coach. Rachel and her team at Results Fitness strive to be the best part of their members’ day every day, achieving results, changing lives, and having fun while doing it. They are on a mission to “Change The Way Fitness Is Done.” Listen To Episode 040 As Rachel Uncovers How Club operators can deal with overwhelm at the intersection of technology and fitness business operations As a club operator why if you're not delegating, you're being selfish Where to start if a club owner is feeling overwhelmed by depending on your core values  Understanding the new member orientation process and which category the client falls into:  Look better  Feel better  Perform better Understanding the personality types of the new client:  outgoing, introvert, ect Why at Results Fitness, Rachel and her staff send clients an email breakdown of their heart rate training zones after each session or class Why at Results Fitness, Rachel and her staff use handwritten cards and personally written emails for a higher level of service and client experience How beyond giving a phenomenal workout experience, why a personality matrix to understand the type of communication a new member wants and what type of personality they have will create a loyal fitness customer How Rachel uses Facebook to engage current members with "club bucks" and attract new members How to use Facebook to increase the digital literacy of members 50+ Why Rachel specializes in working with women and communication in the fitness industry  Why heading into IHRSA with a game plan will be yield more success when researching and discovering new technology platforms for clubs How Rachel transitioned from being a trainer to a business operator: what systems and change were involved Top 3 Takeaways From The Show Rachel reminds us that when it comes to fitness and technology, change is inevitable. It's part of growth and it's part of running a business. If you're not somebody who embraces change and who really wants to find a better way constantly then you're not going to be in business for too long.  The new member orientation process is pivotal in securing a long-term customer.  Rachel believes that using a combination of personality typing and personalized communication via heart rate monitors, intimate emails sent after workouts, as well as speaking to the new member in the language they most understand will create a loyal customer who becomes an advocate for your fitness facility. As successful club owners like Rachel take a deeper look into the technology solutions that are rapidly entering our space, it's not just about collecting data for data sake. What's most important is that we collect data with the primary intention of constantly improving and enriching the customer experience. Power Quotes From Rachel  "If you're not delegating responsibility to your staff and trying to run everything on your own, you're actually keeping your team from stepping into roles that they can accel at and bring even more value to your company. When you choose to not let go and have your staff take over the roles they deserve, you're essentially being selfish as an operator."  - Rachel Cosgrove on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "Change is inevitable, it's part of growth and running a business. If you're not somebody who embraces change and who really wants to find a better way constantly, then you're not going to be in business for too long." - Rachel Cosgrove on the Fitness + Technology Podcast "Members are craving personal connection now more than ever. If we ever start to get replaced by online trainers, artificial intelligence or an app, then the truth is we must elevate our game." - Rachel Cosgrove on the Fitness + Technology Podcast Resources Mentioned From Rachel  Result Fitness on the web  Rachel Cosgrove on LinkedIn Rachel Cosgrove on Facebook Rachel Cosgrove on Twitter Rachel Cosgrove on the web Rachel on IDEA Fitness Rachel on LIVESTRONG Thomas Plummer - Fitness Industry Consultant Zappos Company Culture: Creating Core Values Jim Collins: Good To Great Delivering Happiness: Tony Shea, Zappos How Successful People Think: John Maxwell  Mind Body Software In-Body FitMetrics Skipio Texting Application Perform Better Series Fitness Business Summit IHRSA Bedros Keuilian: Fitness Business   The 2017 FIT-C Tech Trends Report Results Fitness University Bobby Cappuccio: Fitness + Technology Podcast Episode 027 Thanks To Our Outstanding Sponsors Bryan O’Rourke and his family of companies including Vedere Ventures, Integerus Advisors, and many more. Because gym owners almost always love coaching, it’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to do all the hands-on stuff yourself. You love your work, so why would you want to let anyone else take over? This week, we talk to Alwyn Cosgrove of Results Fitness to find the compelling answer to that question. We were thrilled to have the chance to sit down with Alwyn, because he was one of the first people to really convince us of the merits of systemizing our own business. Alwyn helped us explore some of the reasons we choose not to delegate our work or simplify it with systems. A lot of times we think of handing over a task as a form of ‘giving up.’ Alwyn’s response is that “It’s not about idleness. It’s not about stepping out to be lazy. It’s about what if you had to? Could you?”  When Alwyn was diagnosed with stage-four cancer, he very quickly figured out how to get all the systems in place that were necessary for his gym to operate optimally in his absence.   “I had to move in at UCLA to have a stem cell transplant, right? We had insurance because of the gym, but your bills at home… You still have to pay your rent or your mortgage. You still have to pay your car payment. You still have to pay for everything, right? How do you create a business that runs without you? That’s what you should be doing in the first place.” Alwyn’s gym underwent a thorough systemization under circumstances that were far from ideal. But it worked. In fact, he jokes that he must have been the jam in the system, because business boomed while he was gone. As a result of the groundwork he laid years ago, Alwyn is now able to focus on refining his systems and getting incredible results. Some of his members, for example, have been with his gym for 17 straight years, with the average membership running in the seven-to-ten-year range. Ideally, the only reason someone would chose not to renew their membership is that they’ve moved out of the area entirely. Otherwise, he wants to be the last gym his members will ever join.

It’s Spartan World Championships Week. And this week we talk to two Spartan World Championships competitors with completely different stories! We start by debuting our new Seasoned Firsts segment. This segment features people who are stepping outside their comfort zones to try new challenges for the very first time. Whether it’s a race, event, competition or new sport, we want to know what drives these people to challenge themselves in this new way. Today we introduce 48-year old Julie Jensen, who is competing in her very first Spartan Race at the notoriously difficult Spartan Race World Championships in Lake Tahoe. In our main interview, we talk to 43-year old Rachel Cosgrove of Santa Clarita, California. Rachel owns and operate Results Fitness, named one of the top ten gyms in the US by Men’s Health Magazine. She’s the best-selling author of The Female Body Breakthrough and Drop Two Sizes. In 2012, Rachel earned the title of IDEA Personal Trainer of the Year. She has competed as a triathlete, a powerlifter, and in the last year, she made a name for herself as a competitive obstacle course racer. Some of Rachel’s recent OCR stats include earning a 3rd place Masters finish at EPIC Series in 2017, a 3rd place age group finish at the 2017 Big Bear Spartan Beast, 2nd in the 40-49 age group at the 2018 SoCal Spartan, and 3rd place in the 40-49 age group at the 2018 Big Bear Spartan Beast, which also punched her ticket to the 2018 Spartan World Championships as an age group competitor.
