We explore Dario Argento's Suspiria, his 1977 horror classic, and its loose remake by Luca Guadagnino, from 2018. We've never seen either, although Argento's film casts a long shadow - those who've seen it never forget it, and it's easy to see why. Its visual design is bold, imaginative and beautiful, the images it creates extraordinary, its violence heightened and wild. José loves it, literally wowed by it, captivated by its cinematic flair and interesting casting. But, Mike argues, it's a film that offers nothing beyond the aesthetic, uninterested in its own characters or story, which leaves him cold. Our responses to Guadagnino's remake are reversed entirely. For Mike, it's superior: ambitious, keen to mine the threadbare original for thematic depth, and laudably attempting to weave together generational guilt, dance, institutional corruption and women's bodies into a complex tapestry, although one which requires too much audience participation to complete. José thinks he's giving a pretentious work of ego far too much credit, is turned off by the dance scenes, annoyed at the lack of connection he finds between its wider themes and central coven, angered by its grey, wintry colour palette and dry cinematography... in fact, he's angered by all of it! Now he knows how his friends felt as he valiantly tried to argue them into appreciating Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name, which he loved, but which many of them greeted with similar hostility. The original a cult classic, its remake a very different take on the core premise - both are worth watching. But if our responses are anything to go by, your mileage may vary considerably. Recorded on 11th May 2021.

Entrepreneurship can be hard work (but it’s also totally worth it). Over many years of working with entrepreneurs and talking with a plethora of industry experts, I’ve discovered that two roadblocks often stand in the way of fully reaping the benefits of entrepreneurship, battling entrepreneurial poverty, and not fully stepping into their zone of genius. The good news? If either of these resonates with you, you can overcome both challenges with the right mindset shifts and actions. One of the people I admire most regarding both of those topics is Mike Michalowicz. Mike has an impressive entrepreneurial past (becoming a self-made millionaire in his early thirties), having created and sold several businesses. He has since switched gears and now spends his days writing amazing books aimed at eradicating what he calls entrepreneurial poverty. Having read all of his books and witnessed the powerful message he delivers on a stage, I know he has so much insight and wisdom to offer the IHML community. I was thrilled to have him join me for this episode, and I can’t wait for you to give it a listen. Follow along as Mike walks us through his journey from entrepreneur to author, including the bankruptcy (and piggy bank) that planted the seed for change in his life by illuminating the path toward his true calling. Having learned from his past mistakes, he is now on a mission to eradicate entrepreneurial poverty by helping entrepreneurs understand the foundational elements of running successful businesses. I’m telling you, there’s so much to learn from Mike. Mike believes there is a fundamental flaw in how most entrepreneurs view profits and, therefore, explains how you can build a system that channels your habits and the results you want. So, listen as we talk about his behavioral approach to cash management, a method he calls Profit First. He shares the method’s basic principles and reveals the first steps you can take to begin implementing Profit First in your business ASAP. Be sure to listen for the part when he reviews the five foundational accounts we should all have to build strong habits around properly distributing profits. For those of you who struggle with debt in your business, he shares his advice regarding paying that off with profits too. The episode continues as we dive into the importance of working in your zone of genius within your business. Follow along as we talk about how you can (and why you should) remove yourself from your business’s day-to-day operations and step into your true zone of genius. For Mike, that means going into full-blown author mode-- and it’s done wonders for him and his various businesses. As it turns out, there are three elements of making this transition. Don’t worry. You can hear all about them when you tune into this episode. So grab your notebook, find a comfortable seat, and get ready to dive in. P.S. Don’t miss my episode with one of Mike’s incredible business partners, Adrienne Dorison, where we discuss all the things regarding how to run your business like clockwork, so you can confidently step away (vacation, anyone?) without worrying about all the things. Listen to the episode here. In this episode… [03:19] Welcome, Mike! He shares his journey from entrepreneur to full-time author. [06:08] How bankruptcy led Mike to discover the profit first method. [09:50] Basic principles of Profit First and how you can begin implementing the method in your business. [13:48] Mike’s advice on handling debt. [18:12] Mike talks about how his ideas became books that became businesses. [20:50] How to live in your zone of genius in your businesses (3 elements). [24:29] Why you need to check your ego and step into your zone of genius. [26:00] Hear what’s next for Mike and his businesses (psst… a new book!). [27:54] Mike’s advice for living a life better than your dreams. Quotes: “I was always talking about the revenue that we made, but never really thinking about profitability and what I was paying myself. I thought it was good for me to pay myself as little as possible, not really recognizing that was detrimental to my mental health. I was putting in all of this effort and not thinking about what I was actually making.” -Emily Williams “The big thing is not to change who we are. It's to build a system that channels who you already are [to help] get the results we want.” -Mike Michalowicz “The day will come. I don't know if it's six months or six years, but the day will come that all that [debt] is eradicated. You keep chipping away at it with this profit account. Then the next profit distribution is all yours. It’s a glorious day. And the beautiful thing is you built a profit habit.” -Mike Michalowicz “I used to call myself an entrepreneur, and I love that word, but it is also associated with hustle and grind, doing everything-- which is a horrible association. Our job is to create a vision and to organize resources, [and then] to make that vision a reality. It's not to work like animals for anybody. So, I changed my title to ‘shareholder.’” -Mike Michalowicz Links & Resources: Learn from Mike and his incredible [free] resources. Episode Highlights Mike’s Story Mike turned his life around by refusing to be chained by the environment he grew up in and becoming a victor of circumstance. Although the pandemic is exceptionally challenging, Mike admits that he went through harder moments in the past. Mike started rewriting his book during COVID-19. Later on, he decided to dedicate it to the lost and lonely. Sometimes, the things we create are what we and others need to hear. Slowing Down, Being Grateful While rewriting the book, Mike made sure to add stories of how people are working through the current crisis. Mike has to remind himself every now and then to be grateful for the success he enjoys today. He admits it’s been like a trip beyond his wildest dreams, from writing bestsellers to speaking for large audiences. Despite being in the limelight for two and half years, Mike still struggles to balance taking ownership of his success and being humble. Understanding the F.O.R.C.E. Mike developed a coaching formula for anyone who feels lost or disconnected using the cognitive behavioral therapy framework. The F.O.R.C.E is an acronym that stands for five cognitive distortions. F represents fortune-telling, O for overgeneralizing, R for rigid thinking, C for confused purpose, and E for emotional reasoning. The solution to these cognitive distortions can be found in the same acronym. Fact-finding is the antidote to fortune-telling, objective thinking to overgeneralizing, relaxation to rigid thinking, clarified purpose to confused purpose, and evidence-based thinking to emotional reasoning. Before making a decision, make sure to check the filter you’re using to assess the situation. If it falls under the five cognitive distortions, use the corresponding acronym to break out of that mental loop. On Coaching Mike believes that a sense of community is an essential component in inspiring change. It’s more challenging to create and maintain that connection during the pandemic. For Mike, the first step to change is to be fully honest with yourself. In the end, we’re all coaches and experts in life. However, the moment you think you have all the answers is when you stop becoming a coach. The Right Coach Mike cautions against coaches who sell easy and quick fixes. Coming from a clinical background, Mike suggests that it’s unethical to sell something to someone trying their best to recover from trauma. There’s a big difference between a coach speaking to help and one speaking to sell. According to Mike, it’s best to let people be vulnerable rather than inviting them to expensive therapies. You have internal resources that you can always draw on to improve yourself. If you can’t afford to get professional help, several communities offer free assistance. Being Honest with Yourself As long as you’re not hurting anyone, there’s no wrong intention or motivation. Having worked in TV and show business, Mike discovered that most people rarely want to change others' lives. What you’re saying to others has to be congruent with your inner truth. Be honest and lean into what you want to do. As long as you’re true to yourself, people will support you. Whatever you’re doing has to fit into your long-term vision and be aligned with your values. Live with Purpose If you ever have to choose between becoming well-known or helping other people, know that the former feels empty and the latter more meaningful. Whenever you have to make a similar decision, take a step back and clarify your purpose. Why do you do what you do, and why do you love what you love? This wisdom can apply in even the most mundane circumstance. If you feel out of place at an event, revisit why you came in the first place. Often, you’ll discover that it’s not about you. With clarity, it becomes easier to live with purpose and make decisions from that place of discernment. For Mike, to live with purpose feels like being wrapped in a giant hug. He admits it feels much better than being in the New York Times bestselling authors list. Radically Loved Mike feels radically loved when he’s with someone who accepts him perfectly and unconditionally. He recalls a time during prayer when he heard a voice that asked him to satisfy his hunger first. The spiritual is not limited to the divine and the sacred but can be something as simple as taking care of your needs or taking a deep breath. 5 Powerful Quotes from this Episode [15:08] “So before making a decision, especially decisions that are creating a lot of anxiety or fear, it's really good to check our filter. That's kind of the filtering system where it helps people get out of that cognitive loop of the same fear just coming up every day and into kind of the facts of life.” [22:23] “We're all in this together. I think as soon as a coach becomes uncoachable or has all the answers, it's a dead-end street.” [29:44] “We're all artists. And it's just when you're continually pushing yourself to just be great in your art, the universe connects you with other art, and you get to play and have fun.” [47:41] “Clarifying our purpose each day matters, and making a decision to do that matters. It creates this amazing spiritual experience, or whatever someone believes, where we're like, ‘I belong here.’” [50:31] “I was very successful before I became a New York Times bestselling author. It didn't make me any more successful like it didn't give me a giant hug. What gives me a giant hug is being purposeful in my life.” About Mike Mike Bayer is a personal development coach and New York Times bestselling author who has made it his life mission to help people be their best selves. A board-registered interventionist, he spent the early parts of his career helping people overcome drug and alcohol abuse. Shownotes: www.unpackingdesign.com/podcast/145The end of every year always seems to get extremely busy for both work and one’s personal life. For Mike and Tim, this is exactly what they’re encountering as 2020 comes to a close. How are they balancing their professional and personal workload with their health and relationships?Tim starts this design life episode off talking about all of the projects that he’s currently juggling with his work at the architecture firm, his YouTube channel, and getting back to personal architecture projects. He discovered an architecture competition to design low rise multifamily housing that all minorities will be able to afford. He loved the premise behind the competition and is brainstorming ways to juggle it along with his current YouTube projects.Mike finished his 75-day challenge and is now focusing on decompressing from a busy year of both personal and professional work. He’s working out at home using resistance bands that clip into a foot board. Mike and Tim talk about different workouts and the benefits of a rowing machine, which they both debated purchasing this year. They transition the conversation to talking about Mike’s progress on his book and his upcoming 3-week vacation to focus on finishing the first draft of the book. He agreed to so many additional projects in the fall and reached a point where he said yes to too many opportunities that came his way, which slowed down his progress on writing his book. He also simplified his method of writing his book by focusing on jumping straight into writing and not on constantly planning how he would write.Learn more about how Mike and Tim are finding balance in their lives and taking a moment to decompress and rejuvenate in this episode of design life.—Thank you for listening to Unpacking Design! To share your thoughts and make suggestions, keep the conversation going on twitter with Mike (@archivalley) and Tim (@tim_ung)Please consider leaving an honest rating and review on iTunes and anywhere else that you listen to podcasts. Understanding your organization’s purpose, seeking to understand the career goals of your team members, and taking leaps of faith to advance your career. In this episode of Revenue Revolutionaries, I sit down with G2 CRO, Mike Weir to discuss all of these topics and more. I walked away with a set of incredibly valuable insights and perspectives that will help every leader grow and improve. Episode Key Takeaways1. Bring in outside talent to create learning opportunities for your team - During his time at Linkedin Mike learned the importance of helping create the right career trajectory for team members. He uses the strategy of bringing outside talent (i.e. industry thought leaders) into team development to create space for team members to engage outside of their day job. He believes in the power of learning from others and believes it’s key to personal and career development. He encourages the idea of thinking differently and taking intelligent risks.2. The CRO role can be a lot more than building and closing pipeline - For Mike, his role as the G2 CRO goes beyond managing pipeline and closing deals. Mike stresses the importance of keeping a finger on the pulse of the market by staying close to customers, reading, participating in events, and seeking discussions. Mike proactively puts himself in situations to consistently be a part of the conversations taking place in the market to learn and understand what people are talking about and doing. This approach has put him in a strong position to cast a vision for the organization to ensure the team understands the task at hand. 3. Understand your purpose to bring your customers into a ‘value exchange’ - According to Mike, you have to know your place in the market and aim to understand why your buyers are using your products and services to deliver business impact. Ask the question, “how can you help buyers understand the value you deliver to the market?” Mike describes the idea of a ‘value exchange’ as a way to keep perspective on the power of positioning your products and services in a way that considers the true needs of a customer. This should be an ongoing exercise at the individual customer level.4. Develop team members through their career goals and ambitions - Mike explains the importance of leaders understanding the career goals of their team members. It is only after having an understanding can a leader ensure the team member is having the right experience with an organization to prepare them for the future. Create a career journey for your team members to ensure they get the most out of their experience with your organization. Think about ‘stretch projects and experiences’ that can help shape an individual and prepare them for future roles. 5. Chief Growth Officers (CGOs) will become more common in the future - Mike and I talk about the future of the CRO role and Mike predicts we will see more Chief Growth Officers (CGOs). This evolution will happen as organizations strive to create a more unified go-to-market strategy to ensure CRO, CMO, and CPO alignment. Building a shared cross-functional ‘roadmap’ will become more necessary to put the business in the best position to pay off the vision of the company. 6. Cross-functional career shifts can take you to new heights - One of the most revolutionary moves that Mike made in his career was to shift from Marketing leadership to Sales leadership. Jumping over the fence to Sales created an opportunity for Mike to help the Sales team to understand how Marketing thinks and works. He believes this transition is a big reason for being able to drive stronger relationships early in the lifecycle with customers.

BSS Podcast Ep. 57 – Most impactful sports memory of Mike & Ryan The guys are taking their own advice on transparency and this week we learn a bit more on Ryan and Mike’s background. They are talking about how sports in their youth, played such a major role in how they operate today, especially within their mindset and generally with how it shaped them as people today. For Ryan – he starts off sharing his favorite sports memory was from his Division 2 school football game on national TV. Which included a spotlight showcase on him, tv timeouts, cameras and the like. The overall experience was memorable for him, despite breaking his collar bone the first play of the game. He has many profound memories around football but this was a highlight. For Mike – one of the bigger memories was from his first touchdowns as a freshman fullback running 65 yards on a trap play all the way into the endzone after a solid stiff-arm. He follows up with one of the most devastating memories from his main sport of baseball. Playing pick up basketball with friends the night before a big baseball game, he tore his ACL in his knee. At that point it was devastating. Sports, school and family is what many high school students’ entire world looks like. To Mike, at the time, it hit hard with difficult life lessons to learn. They both go back and forth about who was natural at what and who had to work harder at certain things given their different heights and weights. All in all, they were eager to share some more insight into their pasts in an effort to get to know them a bit more. Next week, back to your regular programming!..... In this episode, Mike Brennan discusses what it’s like to be a creative (graphic artist), how he uses design and creativity as a leader, and the challenges of being an entrepreneur. For Mike, it's not just creating pretty/trendy things, but working alongside people who love what they do. Here’s a sampling of what this episode offers ... [01:30] - The value of finding your voice and your style through daily practice. [02:34] - Key lessons learned in the experience of showing up daily. [05:39] - How do you leverage momentum? How do you actually develop a habit and let that habit do a lot of the heavy lifting for you as you show up? [09:29] - Principles that transcend your creative expression. [12:03] - The importance of showing up and creating a daily creative habit. [19:03] - Creativity, at the core, is just us leveraging something to create something. It’s fulfilling for us and helps others - problem-solving. [22:43] - We all can be creative and it doesn't necessarily have to tie to what we do. [25:32] - Have a bias toward action. The more things you can put out there ... the more darts you throw at the dartboard, the more likely you are to hit. [48:23] Placing your identity with your work is really dangerous. QUOTES: “You're going to make mistakes along the way because you're human and humans make mistakes, but it's what you do after that.” “Being a relational person like that, being something that's very important to me, you know, I said like growing up, it was important for me to find a place to belong.” “No matter what I do, that's at the foundation of everything. So whether it's an illustration, whether it's graphic design, whether it's my podcast, whether it's coaching ... anything that I do, it's all with this, this desire to connect with somebody.” “Practice grace with yourself.” “You may have a certain amount of success in a certain area of your life, but that does not automatically mean that in another area, especially where it's brand new, that you're going to have that same success.” “Surround yourself with people who can help speak into your journey, your situation, from the things that they've learned. Continue to leverage that, you know, surround yourself with wise counsel.” USEFUL RESOURCES https://www.mikebrennandesigns.com/ https://twitter.com/MikeBrennanAD http://instagram.com/mikebrennandesign https://tinyurl.com/CreativeChatsPodcast https://www.facebook.com/mikebone CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://thejohnhulen.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/johnhulen LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen EPISODE CREDITS Intro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/ Outro music provided by Tony Palacios - https://www.instagram.com/tonytonedog/

It is common for people who visit the western North Carolina mountains to instantly fall in love with the area. From outdoor adventure enthusiasts and waterfall explorers to anglers and scenic byway drivers, those who love these mountains are drawn to its beauty and serenity. For Mike & Cate Szabo, owners of Cabin Hosts Vacation Rentals, their love affair with the Blue Ridge Mountains started with a trip to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the fall foliage in 2012. The mountains captured their hearts and they made it their goal to find a way to put down roots. In 2016, they purchased their very own cabin in Chimney Rock, NC with the idea of creating a peaceful, relaxing space for a retreat in the mountains. Two years later, they built a log cabin in nearby Lake Lure. They put their heart and soul into the cabins, and it is their mission to ensure their guests trust them to provide a clean, comfortable space for their holiday. They've had the great fortune of hosting wonderful guests who share stories of engagements, anniversaries, birthday celebrations, etc. all celebrated at the cabins. Listen in as Mike and Cate talk about their journey from visitor to local cabin hosts who provide a place for people to create spectacular lifelong memories!MENTIONED IN THIS PODCASTChimney Rock VillageChimney Rock State ParkLake LureLake Lure Adventure CompanyMedina's Village BistroHickory Nut Gorge BreweryParty RockRumbling Bald TrailPoint Lookout WineryBurntshirt WineryHickory Nut FallsHendersonville, NCBlack Mountain, NCAsheville, NC

"Material possessions, winning scores, and great reputations are meaningless in the eyes of the Lord, because He knows what we really are and that is all that matters."--John Wooden On this segment of 21, we talk with Coach Michael Niemi. Mike is the Head Basketball Coach at Paetow High School in Katy, Texas. Mike loves basketball but has never been one to relish the limelight. His success at Katy High School (which is also where Drew played) paved the path for Mike to play college basketball at Southern Methodist University (SMU). While at SMU, Mike made basketball his priority while also focusing on his appreciation for Fine Arts. (How many basketball players can you say that about?) Post college, Mike knew that he wanted to coach the game, but his career path was not as easy as he thought it would be. Mike became discouraged when he was overlooked for head coaching opportunities, and he decided to leave coaching for a profession that paid more and provided a more predictable schedule. It wasn't long, however, before Mike decided that his life's purpose and passion are tied to basketball. Within a short time, he returned to coaching and it wasn't long before he received the head coaching position he had always wanted. For Mike, coaching is not a job. It's his calling. He considers his players and their families are a part of his extended family. Listen as Mike discusses the highs and lows of coaching, and how COVID-19 and the renewed focus on race relations may impact how he coaches and leads his players.
