Preserving Appalachia: The Power of Documentary Storytelling with Mountainwater Films

Send us a textEvery region has its stories, but few places weave storytelling into their cultural fabric quite like Appalachia. Bob Peck, the visionary behind Mountainwater Films, has dedicated himself to capturing these narratives through a lens that prioritizes authenticity above all else. When Hurricane Helene devastated much of Western North Carolina, Bob's storytelling took on new urgency. Through his documentary approach, he helped businesses like Asheville Tea Company—whose entire operation was washed downstream—process their experiences while inviting customers back through powerful visual storytelling. His work in communities from Old Fort to Lake Lure demonstrates how film can simultaneously educate, inspire, and market in ways that honor the recovery process. What emerges most clearly is Bob's commitment to sustainable storytelling that connects "nuanced visitors" with authentic experiences while benefiting local communities. In a time when many places struggle with overtourism, his work aims to attract people who will appreciate and respect the true character of Appalachia, ensuring these communities and their stories continue to thrive for generations to come.Want to explore more of Appalachia's authentic stories? Closed since the storm because of destroyed roads and unsafe buildings, Christmas was brought to the community on Saturday, Dec. 14 for a special one-day holiday market. Gathered outside the Lake Lure Inn, Cityserve hosted small businesses that have been hard-pressed without the regular fall tourism season. The event also featured bus tours through Chimney Rock, which remains closed to the outside public. Join the Carolina Weather Group as we bring Christmas to the people of western North Carolina. Hear from some of those hardest hit by the storm and how the holiday spirit has managed to find its way into the North Carolina mountains. Also hear from those who came out to support the community, including 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Cole Custer and Henderson Motorsports's Stefan Parsons. We also get an update from the Army Corps of Engineering, which has been working to rebuild the lake and surrounding infrastructure since the storm. Featuring the Carolina Weather Group's James Brierton and Dan Whittaker and WCNC Charlotte's Brad Panovich. Join us for this live stream event from the recovering shorlines of Lake Lure.

This program is focused entirely on Asheville NC & surrouding Appalachia in the wake of unimaginable destruction wrought by Hurricane Helene in late September. The Asheville music and arts community is a beacon of light and creativity, full of ambitious artisans, dreamers n' doers whom I admire. The good folks of AVL and Appalachia need a whole lotta love, positive energy, prayers, and most importantly DONATIONS to continue their long, arduous process of recovery and rebuilding.  This podcast presents four conversations between five different people rooted down in Appalachia, connected to the local music/arts community, and who each lived their own harrowing version of this same nightmare.  It is an honor and privilege to offer a platform for these special souls to tell their storm stories, and ruminate on the realities of the recovery journey. The region's two rivers carried whole houses downstream. What buildings that remain in the lower areas of Buncombe County are larded with a foot-deep layer of toxic mud. Many people died.  The storm was prodigious. Official reports note that 2,300 structures were destroyed completely or made uninhabitable. That's homes, stores, and other businesses. The Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina was closed along its entire length, and its director said that some 10,000 trees had fallen into the roadway. Parts of the parkway were covered in landslide mud, while in other places the pavement had washed away entirely. In several locations, the North Fork Swannanoa River carved new courses, leaving at least one bridge over dry land and the water flowing a hundred yards to the west.   Along the French Broad River south of downtown Asheville, the River Arts District was completely wiped out. The narrow, 14-mile long Hickory Nut Gorge, which drops about 1,800 feet between the town of Gerton and Lake Lure, much of the road is now reduced to a rocky creek bed.  Estimates for regional damages are currently at $53 billion.   Vibe Junkie JAMZ "Tomorrow's Cost" - Secret Agent 23 Skidoo and Friends "Everybody Hurts" (REM cover) - Al Green   Vetted resources and references Grassroots Aid Partnership   iamAVL - Music Industry Relief Fund   Rising Appalachia [several fundraising options]   Flood Back Art    Katie Flanagan [AVL superhero]  donate here   Art Garden AVL   Asheville Music Hall - Joe Marcinek's Dead Funk Summit 12/6   More resources via ArtsAVL   EMAIL the SHOW PLEASE LEAVE A REVIEW on Apple Podcasts Listen on Spotify Theme Song: "Mazel Tov"- CALVIN VALENTINE

In this gripping episode, Pastor Paul Blair and David Hanan, Ph.D., dive into the chaotic aftermath of Hurricane Helene and the ongoing struggle for disaster relief. The storm may have passed, but the stories of heroism, controversy, and government inefficiency are only beginning to emerge. We start with Vice President Kamala Harris's response to the relief efforts and Glenn Beck's sharp critique of the federal response. The conversation heats up as we examine the controversy surrounding a Black Hawk helicopter, which allegedly "targeted" a hurricane aid depot. Glenn Beck speaks with United Cajun Navy's Vice President, Brian Trascher, who believes it was more likely a reckless mistake rather than intentional government action—but others remain suspicious, claiming they saw Department of Defense personnel. The tension builds as we cover the story of a volunteer chopper pilot in Lake Lure, NC, who was threatened with arrest by a local fire official while in the middle of a rescue mission. Why would someone trying to save lives be forced to abandon their mission? Glenn Beck shares shocking details from the hurricane-ravaged areas of Appalachia, revealing the true extent of the damage. While government agencies scramble, the real relief is coming from private citizens, like the courageous volunteers risking their lives to bring food and water to those left behind. Join us as we piece together the facts and rumors, exploring the real story behind the hurricane relief efforts. Who is truly helping those in need, and why is it often the people—not the government—who are making the biggest difference? This is a discussion you won't want to miss.

The images from Lake Lure and Chimney Rock in North Carolina are truly shocking. The damage left in the aftermath or Hurricane Helene was widespread across much of western North Carolina. Record flooding, high winds and torrential rain led to widespread destruction in town like Asheville, Old Fort and along Interstate 40 connecting North Carolina to Tennessee. Telephone, cellphone and internet outages were making it difficult for authorities to notify families of the dead. Officials said Sunday that 41 people were rescued in one area of Buncombe County on Saturday. New NCDOT video on Sunday showed tremendous damage to at least one direction of I-40 near Sylva with other areas eroded by the Pigeon River under the highway, which has receded from overflowing on Friday. The bend in the river in an I-40 stretch near the Tennessee line was at its banks Friday and early Saturday after Helene dumped more than 2 feet of rain on the mountains. Water from the river cut under parts of I-40 in areas that appeared normal from the surface. Tessa returned to her homeland in Carolina, USA, with her family, a dream for a glamping business and plenty of energy. Without hesitation, they sold their home to release funds, bought a piece of land and started to build their new lifestyle. Within a short time, they have launched one of the fastest independently financed developments I have witnessed. Now they have their domes in place, ready for the season, so I caught up with Tessa to find out what went well, what didn't and exactly how they got started with their luxury camping and glamping business so quickly. They are located in the heart of the Blue Ridge near Lake Lure, less than an hour from Asheville in North Carolina, with 3 domes in 15 acres of beautiful surrounding and luxury. This is an inspirational start-up story about what it really takes to risk everything to physically build a dream lifestyle business. This latest podcast takes a whole new turn for me. Yet it makes complete sense in terms of the Dancing the Tightrope podcast series. Remember that this series falls under the category of “it takes a village.” In my case, the village I needed was made up of the friends, family and trainers who helped me get back on the horse after my fall in 2017.   My guest for this episode is Marla Steinberg, who happily went along with me when I finally decided to ride a horse again – in late 2018. In other words, well over a year after the fall. In this case, I decided to start with an “easy horse” at Cedar Creek Stables here in Lake Lure. Listen as Marla and I take you through the twists and turns of what appeared to be a simple trail ride on the surface. It turned out to be life changing for Marla and also showed me how well I hid my fear – at least at first – about the whole idea of riding a horse again. I was busted as soon as we walked into the barn. Marla and I share that story and many more in the episode.  Here's a little bit about Marla. She's one of my closest friends. She used to have a house in Lake Lure and we have spent many summers playing together on and around the lake. My first time to meet her involved magnificent, chef-quality food, which I've come to understand as her normal. No one puts more love in their food than Marla! She has three grown children who I also count as good friends, as well as her husband Hank, who has never met a stranger.  Podcasts are usually about some kind of business topic; rarely do you get to eavesdrop on two friends reflecting on some shared experiences. However, that's exactly what you will hear in this episode. I hope you enjoy it!  Outline of Episode ·      Marla's story of how she got into riding. 3:54·      Marla's experience with her father‘s horse. 8:13·      How Scott never had a bad experience on a horse. 13:56·      Horses are the ultimate uneducated human. 20:05·      The second time we went on the trail. 23:43·      What is a fox hunt? 29:47·      The importance of having a vest. 36:04·      How to deal with the fear of horses. 42:54·      Breathing exercises to make sure your head is clear. 46:46·      Using fear to fix fear -. 50:24·      How to build a horse that can do anything. 56:02·      Develop your mental tools, especially listening, to tune in. 1:01:14·      What happens when you're nervous. 1:06:41

Head Brewer, Kiel Arrington, takes Nick on a mini-tour of the brewery and what goes into making your favorite beers. Owning a business was always in the back of Arrington's mind and Vaulted Oak wasn't his first attempt at starting a brewery business.  In 2015, he pitched a brewery to investors and they didn't bite.  But Arrington wasn't deterred and counts it as a good learning experience. “It took years, up to a decade, in the food and bev industry to grow into where I am today,” says Arrington. Years passed and Arrington started a family but didn't give up on the brewery idea.  He started looking at the possibility of opening a bottle shop near Lake Lure when his realtor turned him onto a former BB&T bank location that was just bought.   Arrington brought on business partner, Johnie Jones, and signed the lease in September 2019.  Next step – he had to bring on investors.  In the 11th hour, Arrington got it done.  (the space almost became a Pop-eye's!)   After breaking ground in July 2020 amidst a pandemic and dealing with delays and supply shortages, Vaulted Oak Brewing finally opened its doors on June 8, 2021. And the brewery was immediately embraced. “Overwhelming and humbling were phrases I used a lot of times.  We didn't expect that level of support, especially in a pandemic,” reflects Arrington on the community support. “Community was always a pillar of our business model. we wanted to be more than just a place to get a beer.” Arrington's advice for business owners: Never burn bridges because never know when you're going to need someone's relationship. Fail and fail often. Two years later, they built a log cabin in nearby Lake Lure. From the fictional towns of Hill Valley, CA, and Shermer, IL, to the beautiful landscapes of the “Goondocks” in Astoria and the “ time of your life” dirty dancing resort still alive and well in Lake Lure, NC, ‘80s teen movies left their mark not just on movie screen and in the hearts of fans, but on the landscape of America itself. Like few other eras in movie history, the ‘80s teen movies has endured and gotten better with time . In Brat Pack America, Kevin Smokler gives virtual tours of the legendary movies from that time and why the places they happened are a tribute to their permanence, why we love them still. Including interviews with actors, writers, and directors of the era, and a Trapper Keeper- full of interesting facts about your favorite 80s movies, Brat Pack America is a must for any fan of the Breakfast Club and Back to the Future, of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink and Dead Poets Society. Smokler went to Goonies Day in Astoria, OR, took a Lost Boys tour of Santa Cruz, CA and in the present visited retro arcades, mov- ie theaters and record stores. His exploration of highways and main streets of “Brat Pack America” remind of why we love the teen movies of the 1980s so much and, three decades later, still do. Kevin Smokler (@weegee) is the author of the essay collection "Practical Classics: 50 Reasons to Reread 50 Books you Haven't Touched Since High School" (Prometheus Books, Feb. 2013) which The Atlantic Wire called "truly enjoyable" and the editor of "Bookmark Now: Writing in Unreaderly Times," A San Francisco Chronicle Notable Book of 2005. His work has appeared in the LA Times, Fast Company, BuzzFeed, Vulture, The San Francisco Chronicle, Publishers Weekly and on National Public Radio. In 2013, he was BookRiot's first ever Writer in Residence. - See more at: http://www.kevinsmokler. com/ Praise for Practical Classics “In this engaging survey of 50 books commonly assigned to teen readers, [Smokler] advocates revisiting them from an adult perspective. Even books we loved in our formative years… may have sailed right over our heads, suggests the author, who argues that only time and experience can prepare us to appreciate them fully.” —San Jose Mercury News “[F]ull of wit and candor... Putting literature to practical use is not a new invention, but what’s refreshing about the practice in this light is how Smokler pits this sort of practical gifting-as-guidance against the reduction of literature to ‘a letter grade and a dusty old obligation.’” —Fiction Writers Review “[S]o much fun…[It] offers a truly enjoyable trip down one’s personal memory lane of books. It’s also a love letter to the act of reading, to continual learning, and to making an effort to slow down and savor the good books in life.” —The Atlantic Wire “If you have been thinking about revisiting the books of your youth or those you have promised yourself to read, but haven’t, this entertaining book provides practical, real-world reasons by you should read them.” -Alan Caruba, Bookviews “[A] fine guide for any adult reader who would return to the classics with a different perspective in mind.” -The Bookwatch “In the short and beguilingly engaging essays that make up Practical Classics, Smokler shows how these works can be relevant and even useful to grownups. Most impressively, he manages to pull this off without sounding stuffy or self-important.” -The Rumpus “Possibly the first self-help book to use literature as its prescription, Practical Classics serves as a primer for personal development, demonstrating how one may apply various literary tinctures to the more trouble- some areas of the Human Condition.... [Smokler] holds forth with confidence and a good slathering of wit about coping with our common, human plight.” -Austin Chronicle

From hosting the Asheville Hiking Group, to producing television show Stashers and Cachers, Chris is a busy and interesting local flavor. Stashers and Cashers is a reality television show concept dreamed up by Neumann, who enjoys geocaching as a hobby. Geocaching is likened to a high tech treasure hunt chase, where cachers are given coordinates to clues and hidden objects. There are various levels of geocachers, and some like Chris enjoy setting up elaborate stages that challenge an individuals smarts and stamina while embarking on their challenging quest. While he is not staging elaborate geocaching missions, and leading hikes, Chris enjoys doing film work. One of his most recent projects was participating in the Doritos Crash The Superbowl Challenge.
