This week our guest is esteemed journalist Dean Takahasi, dean of tech writers, who helps us analyze this year's CES. News topics on our minds were the LA fires, which have personally affected Charlie and Ted, Meta's big announcement on content moderation, free speech, and Jensen Huang's Nvidia keynote, which promised a new AI-capable personal computer on the edge, and their plans to power a robotics revolution worth trillions. Charlie and Ted found CES a bit disappointing, especially the XR area, which was dominated by Xreal. Meta was also there for the first time, promoting Ray Bans and their MR Quest 3 headset. What would happen if someone leaked their company's full compensation information to the entire company? That's how you can evaluate your readiness to move your company toward an open salaries policy, or not. In the future of work, where more and more employees will prioritize transparency and equality, open salaries are poised to become a standard for Gen Z in Western cultures. Historian Kevin Impellizeri shares a story of a video game controversy to his friends: Elford Stephens, Phil Thomas, and Andy Hunter. We finally wrap up our series explaining how video games got age ratings in the United States. We address the December 9, 1993, Congressional hearing about video game violence and how this led to the games industry creating a trade organization--the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA, now known as the Entertainment Software Association)--as well as a comprehensive ratings system: the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB). Topics discussed include: How different game companies handled content before 1993, how Sega and Nintendo brought their marketing feud into the halls of Congress, and how the ratings system, in many respects, made it easier to put racy content in games. To learn more about the creation of the ESRB, check out:Blake J. Ruthless Reva from Obi-Wan Kenobi speaksAhsoka starts productionAnd the Feige Star Wars is on the runwayGive us 5 minutes and we'll give you the galaxy.www.ATGcast.comPatreon.com/ATGcast@ATGcast(c) 2022 Pete in the Seat StudiosAnother week, another flood of news rumors, clickbait and conversation. This is Pete Fletzer and welcome to disturbances in the Force. All the links to the original sources can be found in the notes and I urge you to check them out. 1.The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will debut in less than two weeks on Disney Plus and the press tour surrounding it is in full swing. This past week Director Debora Chow and stars Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christense and Moses Ingram were seen in Berlin and London. In talking about her character, an Imperial Inquisitor named Reva, Moses Ingram said QUOTE “She is ruthless. She doesn't care about what people think about the way she does things. She'll cut people down and get the job done whatever it takes.” The actress went on to say about her costars, “even on set there were lifelong fans who would just get so moved by being around Ewan or Hayden. I think it's going to be a big deal for fans to see them at the center.” There have been no new nuggets of information about the story shared so far on the press tour but Ewan did say that it took him some time to get back to the Alec Guiness style of speaking for the title role. Obi-Wan Kenobi debuts on Disney plus on Friday, May 27th with the first two episodes of the six-part series.2.Video game industry insider Jeff Grubb said on a recent Grubbsnax stream that the title for the sequel to the wildly popular Jedi: Fallen Order game will be Jedi: Survivor. Grub has also said in previous scoops that gameplay footage from the sequel to the EA RESPAWN game would be shared at Star Wars Celebration later this month. The video game reporter also claims that Jedi: Survivor will be a next-gen console game only. There is no release date or confirmation of the title at this time.3.Keeping with video game news, Lego, the Skywalker Saga continues to make waves in the industry. According to the website GamesBeat, the brick-based Star Wars game is already ranked as the number two selling video game of 2022 so far ahead of the latest Pokemon offering and the epic Horizon Zero Dawn sequel trailing only Elden Ring in sales. 4.Bryce Dallas Howard was interviewed by friend of the podcast, Germain Lussier at io9 recently and of course the topic of Star Wars came up. The daughter of Solo 2 director Ron Howard, has been behind the camera for two episodes of the Mandalorian and the Book of Boba Fett episode titled “Return of the Mandalorian.” When asked if there was a story that would spark her interest in direting a Star Wars film she said quote “Oh my goodness, I think it would take someone asking me.” Bryce will next be seen ON screen reprising her role as Claire Dearing for the third time when Jurassic World Dominion hits theaters June 10th.5.Speaking of directors on Disney Plus Star Wars shows, this week, in a simple photo of a an Ahsoka-logo emblazoned directors chair and a signature cowboy hat belonging to one Dave Filoni, the official star wars twitter account revealed that production has officially begun on the Ahsoka live-action series. Shortly thereafter, rumors emerged from movie scooper Daniel RPK and Adam Frazier that actor Mathew Law has been brought on to the show in a quote “big role.” The Six-foot one Law is best known for a role in four episodes of Agents of Shield. This unconfirmed casting joins other rumored actors including Natasha Loo Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, and Mary Elizabeth Winsted, Ivanna Sahkno (SOK-NO) and Ray Stevenson in unidentified roles. The Ahsoka series does not yet have an official release date.6.Michael Waldron, the writer who worked on Loki and Doctor Strange among other Marvel projects, is finally turning his attention to the long rumored Kevin Feige Star Wars film. He told Variety QUOTE ““We're finally into it in earnest. I mean, I'm writing away. It's a lot of fun…It just doesn't have a bunch of TV shows and movies that you're servicing on top of it, the way I did with Doctor Strange. So it's nice..” The Feige film was first mentioned in 2019 and is expected to be a one-off project. An animal destroyed GamesBeat editor Mike Minotti's home or something, so he had to break into his brother's home to record the podcast. Thankfully he was able to do that so the GamesBeat Decides crew could discuss important news like Splatoon 3's release date, Skate 4, and new Star Wars games. Mike and fellow editor Jeff Grubb then answer your questions and discuss playing RiffTrax: The Game.

When you’ve been a journalist on the XR technology beat for 20 years, like VentureBeat’s lead writer Dean Takahashi has, you develop a hunch or two about the direction the industry might go. Alan picks Dean’s brain for a few such scoops. Alan: Thank you for joining the XR for Business Podcast with your host, Alan Smithson, today’s guest is the one and only Dean Takahashi, the lead writer for VentureBeat. He’s been a tech journalist for more than 28 years, and he’s covered games for a twenty one of those years. He’s authored two books: Opening the XBox, and The XBox 360 Uncloaked. He organizes the annual GamesBeat and GamesBeat Summit conferences. To learn more, you can visit games beat dot com or venture beat dot com. Dean, welcome to the show, my friend. Dean: Thank you. And thank you for having me. Alan: It’s my absolute pleasure. We had the distinct opportunity to meet at AWE this year for a very short amount of time. I think we rode the escalator down? But I’ve been a big fan of yours for a long time. I read the articles that you write, and they’re very insightful. They’re very factual. I’m just very honored to have you on the show. So, thank you very much. Dean: Thank you. Nice, and happy to hear. Alan: How did you start… first of all, I guess you’ve been in the games world for a long time. How did you kind of pivot over to VentureBeat, and what is VentureBeat? Let’s let’s unpack what VentureBeat is, for people that may or may not know? Dean: Yeah, I was sort of a traditional newspaper and magazine journalist for a long time, and then, when the web came along and people started podcasting and blogging, I looked around and felt like it was less of a risk to go try something new than it was to stay at a newspaper. I was at the San Jose newspaper at the time. So about 11 years ago, I joined VentureBeat, and it had been started two years earlier by Matt Marshall, who was a venture capital writer for the Mercury News and an early blogger as well. And so, we were a tech news blog and competed at the time with likes of GIGO, and TechCrunch. They have been either… gone away, or they they’ve been acquired by larger companies. So we’re still one of the last, larger independent tech blogs. And then within that, when I joined about eleven years ago, we started GamesBeat as well, as sort of a subsection that focused on games. At the very beginning, we were sort of a startup and venture capital site. But now we pretty much cover the gamut of tech news and game news. And then, our particular vertical focuses are artificial intelligence on the tech side, and then the whole game sector. And then, I guess as far as getting into VR and AR, I’ve really followed the news. I remember seeing the Oculus guys — Palmer Luckey and Nate Mitchell and Brendan (Iribe) over at one of their CES tables in the early years, well before they were acquired. I think I even tried to get an interview with John Carmack, like, the day after he did a demo at E3. The next day, he was gone. So I was on the hunt kind of early. Never quite the absolute first person to dive into VR. Alan: But very close. You’ve seen it from pre-DK1 days — where [it was] probably a cobbled-together a collection of flat screens, wires, and duct tape — and what it is today, where you have real consumer-grade virtual reality that’s not even connected to computers. You’ve seen a lot over the years. You’ve written countless articles on virtual and augmented reality. Is there anything that you may have written about before that you couldn’t have predicted, that has happened already? Dea
