Sam and Emma are joined by Rachel Cohen, lawyer formerly of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, to discuss the country's largest law firms bending the knee to Donald Trump. First, they run through updates on today's elections in Wisconsin and Florida, Trump's attack on the US public health regime, tomorrow's tariff deadline, the Senate GOP's budgetary sleight of hand, legal pushback to Trump over voting restrictions and his reclassification of protected Venezuelan migrants, Trump's ongoing renditioning of Latin Americans to an El Salvadorian gulag, the mobilization of far-right militia's to protect Musk's businesses, Trump's targeting of Harvard, Cory Booker's filibuster, and dwindling Canadian tourism to the US, also watching Jesse Watters explain exactly why he (and the rest of the right) doesn't care about due process. Rachel Cohen then dives Trump's successful effort to cow some of the biggest law firms in the US – including her former firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom – unpacking precisely what makes these law firms so “important” to Trump (wealthy clients, billions in profits), and the intimate relationship they have with the political elite, before walking through the actual contents of Trump's threats to these firms' contracts and access to federal buildings (e.g. courts), and why, unlike others, Skadden seemed to capitulate without even facing an Executive Order, including handing over $100m in pro-bono work to the administration. Expanding on this latter element, Cohen tackles the Trump Administration's underlying aims for this authoritarian push against these attorneys elite, with the push against DEI policies, the takeover of pro-bono work, and the Executive Orders chilling pushback to Trump's anti-migrant and anti-trans agenda coming at a time where he and his goons are undercutting due process for migrants and criminalizing trans identity. After touching on the mix of hubris and cowardice driving the executive capitulation in the world of corporate law, and what the internal pushback looks like among Cohen's peers, Rachel, Sam, and Emma wrap up by reemphasizing the real goal of Trump's project – a fascist takeover – and the importance of organized dissent. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with Ronald Raygun about the precarious state of immigration law, dissect Elon Musk's blatant and manipulative lies about Social Security fraud, and watch as Sen. Bill Cassidy accidentally gets blunt about the GOP's plan to gut Medicare. Mike Lindell teases a run for the Governorship of Minnesota, and the MR Team dives deep into Ezra Klein's poor response to anti-Oligarchical critiques of his “Abundance” doctrine, plus, your calls and IMs! Welcome to B The Way Forward: Interludes - a mini series of special episodes and conversations that stand apart from our regular season, but are just too good not to share. Last night was election night in America, and as we publish this episode today (November 6th, 2024) we can say that it was historic - but not because the US elected its first female president. Once again, the highest glass ceiling was cracked but not shattered.  Kamala Harris wasn't the only woman on the ballot this election. According to the Center for American Women and Politics, 289 women ran for the House, Senate, and Governorships and hundreds more ran in state and city elections. And yet, CAWP's analysis shows that women made up only about 27% of candidates this cycle. That's actually down 2% from 2020. How can our government represent us all when 51% of the population isn't equally represented in public office? And in our current era of intense polarization and heated political rhetoric, how do you even convince women that running for office is worth it? On this episode of B The Way Forward, Brenda sits down with She Should Run Founder and CEO Erin Loos Cutraro to unpack those questions. They talk about the forces stacked against women who might otherwise run, how they can be overcome, and how to respond to the bad faith arguments leveled at attempts to diversify public office.  “I couldn't get over the fact that the research, and it's still true today, shows that when women run for office, they win at the same rate as men. And I couldn't stand the fact of knowing there were so many women who weren't even in this space to consider their own leadership and that we just needed some kind of effort that would speak to them.” --- At AnitaB.org, we envision a future where the people who imagine and build technology mirror the people and societies for whom they build it. This week on the pod, we're celebrating Michigan! We're in the final stretch of the election now, which means we're feeling stressed, excited, exhausted, inspired, nervous, and everything in between. So we thought this is the perfect time to remind ourselves what's possible when we unite and fight. Because together, we can truly move mountains.Since Michigan Democrats won a trifecta in 2022 (that means the State House, State Senate, and Governorship) they've been able to pass so much amazing legislation: expanding voting rights, reproductive rights, gun violence prevention, protections for LGBTQ+ Michiganders, clean energy policies, and so much more. Just think how many lives have been changed by the Michigan blue wave!On today's episode we hear all about it from Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow and Red Wine & Blue's Program Director in Michigan, Kelly Dillaha. They told us all about the progress they've made in their state and, crucially, how it didn't just magically happen. It happened because the people of Michigan, especially women, organized and put in the work.Michigan is an inspiration for states all across the country and even on the national scale. We have two more weeks, so let's roll up our sleeves and make it happen! For a transcript of this episode, please email theswppod@redwine.blue. To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: North Carolina is a battleground state, and a petri dish for extremist policy and practice. Whether it's the right to vote, the right to read, or the right to decide the fate of one's body, North Carolinians are on the frontlines. The state has banned gender-affirming care for minors; its MAGA Republican gubernatorial candidate is calling for death for LGBTQ people and a total abortion ban. Will Proud Boys show up at polling sites this November to intimidate voters? In this special report, Laura speaks with Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein, and correspondent Lewis Raven Wallace examines the agenda of his Trump-endorsed opponent, Lt. Governor Mark Robinson. Laura also checks in with organizers and activists from past episodes. Among those: Serena Sebring, Executive Director of Blueprint NC; Mab Segrest, Writer, Organizer & Consultant with Blueprint NC; Courtney Patterson, Eastern North Carolina Organizer at Blueprint NC; and LGBTQIA+ youth activist Alex Lafferty. As you'll hear, North Carolina is a microcosm of this country. The question remains: where is the state headed this November and beyond?“There's a lot of people I know, a lot of trans people who want to go on hormones but don't have the ability to. And there are things coming up where they want to ban gender affirming care for not just minors but of any age, which is genocide. You can't destroy an entire community and see that as legal.” - Alex Lafferty“I'm seriously afraid that [Proud Boys] will show up in these polling places . . . They feel empowered right now. They feel that they are above the law, so they will do things, make things, they'll take chances because they feel like they'll get away with it.” - Courtney Patterson“I think we use infrastructure and people in order to meet a threat that ultimately is countered by one thing, and that's massive turnout. The best thing that we can do to protect safety in North Carolina is register and turn out voters at a scale that is historic.” Serena Sebring“In 2024, state capture is possible at the national level because it's been petri dished in these other places like North Carolina . . . If they get it, they can do anything they want to. And so they get more and more extreme, more violent, more dangerous because they're unchecked.” - Mab Segrest“North Carolina really is a bit of a microcosm of this country. We're a 50/50 state, elections swing back and forth. We're on the front lines of a number of critical battles, whether it's people's right to vote or whether it's their right to exercise decisions about their own bodies through reproductive decisions . . . We're really on the front lines about protecting people's freedoms.” - Josh SteinGuests:• Alex Lafferty:   Trans Activist, Artist and Composer • Courtney Patterson: Eastern North Carolina Organizer, Blueprint NC• Serena Sebring: Executive Director, Blueprint NC• Mab Segrest: Writer, Organizer & Consultant, Blueprint NC• Josh Stein: Attorney General & Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more. Lyman emerged as the sole Republican nominee at the convention, while Cox sought to buy his way onto the ballot using the nomination petition process legalized in 2014 with Senate Bill 54 (SB54). * Donald Trump Does Not Know the ‘Correct' Interest Rate - Ron Paul. "Interest rates are the price of money. Like all prices, the “correct” interest rate is set by the interaction of free people acting in a free market, not by a central planner. "Interest rates, like all prices, send signals to market actors regarding market conditions. When bureaucrats or politicians manipulate the money supply in order to change the interest rates, they distort those signals. These distortions are the reason the American economy has been plagued by a boom-and-bust business cycle." * Since Congress created the Fed in 1913, the US dollar has lost over 97 percent of its purchasing power. * The Right to be Left Alone - Jge Andrew Napolitano. "Thus, our rights to be alive, to think as we wish, to say what we think, to publish what we say, to worship or not, to associate or not, to assemble with others, to defend ourselves from crazies and tyrants, to travel, to own property, and to be left alone are all hard-wired into our human nature. Nature is the means through which God passes along His gifts to us. We come about by a biological act of nature. God's greatest gift to us is life, and He tied that gift to free will. Just as He is perfectly free, so are we." * When will we refuse to tolerate this pernicious behavior from our public servants? * EU Declares War on Free Speech in America - Jonathan Turley. * Russia Is Not Our Enemy - Jacob G. Hornberger. "Ever since the conversion of the federal government to a national-security state, Americans have lived their lives under what amounts to perpetual war for perpetual peace. In the process, the Pentagon, the CIA, and the NSA have made life less safe for the American people while, at the same time, destroyed our liberty and our well-being."

In this episode, Chairman David Hann and Executive Director Anna Mathews discuss Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's shortcomings and failures. They criticize his tenure as highly partisan, arguing that Walz has governed by catering to the far-left progressive base despite campaigning as a centrist. The hosts highlight several specific issues, including his handling of election laws, anti-business policies, and failure to improve Minnesota's education system despite significant spending. They also recount his poor leadership during the George Floyd riots, his draconian COVID-19 policies, and the substantial COVID-19 fraud scandal under his administration. The conversation further delves into the potential national implications if Walz were considered a vice-presidential candidate. Both Hann and Mathews express disbelief that Walz, whom they view as a divisive and ineffective leader, could attract centrist or rural votes on a national scale. They stress the importance of Republican voter turnout in the upcoming elections to counteract what they see as damaging Democratic policies. Hann and Mathews also touch on various symbolic and practical grievances, including changes to the state flag and marijuana legalization, underscoring their belief that Walz's tenure has been detrimental to Minnesota's overall well-being.

Former actor and SAG President Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as Governor of California just after midnight on 2nd January, 1967: the end of the beginning of a hugely successful political career that would propel him all the way to the White House. Reagan's used oratory to gain prominence, notably his 1964 speech ‘A Time for Choosing', supporting Barry Goldwater's Presidential campaign, which established the Reaganite themes of anti-communism, limited government, and individual freedom.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover how Reagan's Governorship led him to Commander In Chief; demonstrate how his political evolution from liberal Democrat to conservative Republican showcased his adaptability and pragmatism; and consider how he used charm and wit (oh, and astrology…) to connect with the public and beat Jimmy Carter at his own game… Further Reading: ‘Ronald Reagan nominated for governor of California, June 7, 1966' (HISTORY, 2009): https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/reagan-nominated-for-governor-of-california ‘Biography of Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the U.S.' (ThoughtCo, 2019): https://www.thoughtco.com/ronald-reagan-fast-facts-104885 ‘"A Time for Choosing" by Ronald Reagan' (Barry Goldwater Campaign, 1964): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXBswFfh6AY Love the show? It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Jeff Schuhrke, assistant professor in labor studies at SUNY Empire State University, to discuss his recent piece at In These Times entitled "“This Fight Is Global”: Workers Around the World Are Standing With Striking U.S. Autoworkers." Then, she's joined by blogger Ettingermentum to discuss his piece entitled "The Modern Electoral History of Transphobia." First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's devastating siege on Gaza, including the rising death tolls on both sides, the international response to the conflict, international labor action, Kevin McCarthy's obsession with stature, Bob Menendez's desire to run for reelection, Trump's fraud trial, and Oklahoma's publicly-funded religious charter, before parsing through the Israeli government's disturbing response to Hamas' attacks this weekend, and the large role they played in Hamas' rise. Professor Jeff Schuhrke then dives right into the massive size of this labor movement, with the US recently seeing hundreds of thousands of laborers on strike in recent weeks, driven in large part by the United Auto Workers' rolling strikes against the big three auto-makers. Expanding on this latter point, Professor Schuhrke explores the international solidarity being shown to the UAW amid threats to export their jobs abroad for cheaper labor, with both independent Mexican unions and Lula da Silva's Brazilian government extending support, before he and Emma wrap up with an assessment of the incredible international labor moment, and the future of international labor solidarity. Ettingermentum (or, Josh) then joins as he walks Emma through the evolution of the GOP's mass transphobia campaign in the face of consistent electoral blowback. Josh first touches on the North Carolina Bathroom Law in 2013 – where the GOP attempted to use its Governorship and Super Majority in the state as a testing ground for their fascist legislation – and the resulting democratic governorship of Roy Cooper that continues to this day, before walking through the second wave of attempts around the 2016 election of Donald Trump, particularly those in Virginia and New Jersey, which failed so severely they saw Donald Trump pivot to a faux-Pro-LGBT stance for the 2020 race. Wrapping up, Ettingermentum and Emma explore the role of the Democratic Party and national media in propping up the legitimacy of this electoral strategy, their important shift towards highlighting the most extreme platforms of the GOP, and why voters won't go for outright transphobic agendas. And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Crew reflect on coverage of the Israel-Gaza war (including their own) with some help from Dave from Jamaica, Jimmy Dore and Tim Pool tiptoe around any support for Palestine, and Marco Rubio makes an outright call for genocide. Gabe from Philly explores Jewish liberation outside of Zionism, Kevin McCarthy brings the Freedom caucus into his response to the Israel-Gaza conflict, and Michael Knowles continues to exemplify the right-wing attack on education.
