This week's #machinima short is ridiculous, yep Ridiculous Ties - a meme response to Eltorro64Rus' review of favorite and least favorite words used by the Scientist in Half Life, created by Finzlow. And did we say its ridiculous?! We love the well-crafted humor in this, in-jokes with some of the best timing and inspired editing we've seen for quite some time. Although its strictly not machinima, it is definitely from a machinima stable, so it counts for us at least. Kicking off 2025 with a review of a classic and iconic #machinima by one of the pioneers of the movement, Paul Marino aka ILLRobinson. I'm Still Seeing Breen, made in HL2, holds a special place in our memories from those early years - not only was it a perfect 'protest piece' as the feature machinima demonstrating its potential for a 2005 Sundance Film Festival panel discussion (alongside RoosterTeeth's RVB) but was further developed for MTV2's Season 2 premiere of its Video Mods TV show later that same year. In this episode, we go over the back story, discuss how this was made and its impact on machinima in general.1:14 Introduction to film and the Valve 20th anniversary edition of Source Filmmaker updates5:31 Back story to its release: the snub, the support from Valve, the successes and the features (Ottawa Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, MTV2 and Tony Shiff, et al)16:45 The genius of selecting a music video for making machinima! 18:05 Creating the head animation in Source, editing and scene selection23:00 Communicating and community in the early days26:30 Why the Gman and why a close-up?31:00 A watershed moment, a turning point, but the end/beginning of the next phase too35:00 An inspiration38:53 A big mistake41:54 How the games companies robbed the machinima community44:00 A question for PaulCredits -Speakers: Ricky Grove, Phil Rice, Damien Valentine, Tracy HarwoodProducer: Damien ValentineEditor: Phil RiceMusic: Animo Domini Beats

This week's selection is a stunning cinematic imaginary by Unknown Dino, focussing on the next version of Half Life (soon to be released... er, well, possibly in the next 10 years or so?). There is a lot of craft in this film, called HL: Overworld and made in Blender, which has taken its inspiration both from the HL Reddit community and the HL2 Artbook 'Raising The Bar'. We also talk about the positioning of the new world portrayed as being the next obvious logical step in the story arc for Half Life - HL1 being a portal through which aliens jump to Earth, HL2 being a kind of survival against the odds, Alyx being the prequel, and HL3 being the fight back taken to those hateful Combine... yeah, we wish!1:19 Phil introduces the film and describes his impression of the vision of the HL3 world being articulated9:40 Tracy talks about the inspiration for the film and the role of community but why even bother mentioning generative AI here? 17:55 Damien reflects on why there will never be HL3, which leads us into all sorts of speculative nonsense!Credits -Speakers: Phil Rice, Damien Valentine, Tracy HarwoodProducer: Damien ValentineEditor: Phil RiceMusic: Animo Domini Beats
This week we discuss one of the best HL2 films from the 2009 era - Shelf Life by Pixel Eyes Productions. The film, which is in two episodes, won a heap of creator awards back in the day and has definitely stood the test of time for us. There are some fun sci-fi and weird tropes integrated into the story, which we discuss, as well as the very well done sound design and original music. We'd love to see these guys pick this project back up, although of course, none of the issues they faced back then will be a problem now - just a whole set of new ones to overcome! 3:30 Back story to Pixel Eyes Productions. 12:04 How the film has aged well. Recently, we've seen some really great HL2 shorts, and this week we have an excellent one for you - Patient Zero is by TheParryGod aka Richard Makk, released in Feb. This is so well done you can cut the atmosphere with a butter knife, the choreography between the actors is brilliant and there are even some gratuitous small animal shots to boot. Hear us discuss the details and check out the film following the links on our Show Notes post on the Completely Machinima website.Credits -Speakers: Phil Rice, Tracy Harwood, Damien Valentine (mia Ricky Grove)Producer: Phil RiceEditor: Damien ValentineMusic: Arp Solina

On today's Daily Fix, Erik Wolpaw, the co-writer of the Portal franchise really wants to make Portal 3, but there's a small indie company no one's ever heard of called Valve that kinda has the final say. But Wolpaw is down whenever Valve gives the word, he just wishes it's sooner rather than later. And speaking of Valve, a modder has, for years, been working on getting Krystal from Star Fox Adventures into Half-Life 2. Yes, you read that right. Modder Gagnetar has replaced the model-and now the voice-for Alyx in HL2 with Krystal and her original voice actor, Estelle Ellis. The full mod will be released later this year. And in Kingdom Hearts news, a Twitter user has tracked down where Sora lives in Tokyo, based on the images from the recent trailer. Sora must be loaded because according to Kingdom Hearts fan Audrey Lamsam, the luxury apartments he wakes up in is very, very expensive. Do you want Valve to make Portal 3? What other crazy Nintendo characters should modders add to Half-Life 2? Let us know in the comments!

Show Topic Topic: Half Life Releases: Half-Life, was released on November 19, 1998 for Windows November 16, 2004, Valve released Half-Life 2. Half-Life 2 was the first game to use Valve's Steam content delivery system Episode One was released on June 1, 2006 Episode Two was released for Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 10, 2007 as part of the compilation The Orange Box. Valve released Half-Life: Alyx, a virtual reality (VR) game, on March 23, 2020, for Windows. Hal-Life Developement: According to designer Harry Teasley, Doom was a major influence, and the team wanted Half-Life to "scare you like Doom did". According to designer Brett Johnson, the level design was inspired by environments in the manga series Akira. By September 1997, the team found that while they had built some innovative aspects in weapons, enemies, and level design, the game was not fun and there was little design cohesion.[16] The company postponed the release and reworked every level. They also produced a 30-page document for the narrative, and hired science fiction novelist Marc Laidlaw to help manage the script.[11][16] Laidlaw said his contribution was to add "old storytelling tricks" to the team's ambitious designs: "I was in awe of [the team]. It felt to me like I was just borrowing from old standards while they were the ones doing something truly new."[ Half Life 2 Developement: Valve announced Half-Life 2 at E3 2003, with demonstrations of the characters, animation, and physics. The reaction was positive, and the game won the E3 Game of the Show award.[8] Newell also announced a release date, September 30, 2003 Rumors spread of a delay, but Valve made no announcement until September 23, when they released a statement targeting a "holiday" release, leading to fan backlash. In early October, the Half-Life 2 source code was leaked online by a German hacker, Axel Gembe, who had infiltrated Valve's internal network months earlier. A week later, a playable version of Half-Life 2 was compiled from the source code, revealing how unfinished it was. In 2004, the development team returned after Christmas to long hours, stressful working conditions, and no guarantee that the game, which was costing $1 million a month to develop, would be finished soon. Eric Plunk — Today at 11:55 AM Like many other PC games of the era, I enjoyed Half Life 1 & 2 vicariously through one of my best friends who always had the latest and greatest video cards. Half Life felt very much like the beginning of in engine cinematic storytelling and Half Life 2 built on that. Unfortunately the home console versions of these games didn't live up to the original releases so I haven't played through them on my own to this day. I need to acquire The Orange Box collection for my HL2 fix. Community Couch Questions Eric Plunk — 12/10/2021 Before you started collecting, when is the last time you remember playing a NES or other console? For me I remember playing one of the Sharp TV's with a NES built in at a friend's apartment around 2002. Punch Out was the main game I remember playing. In today's Daily Fix, a datamine of the recent Halo Infinite Tech Preview has revealed a curious audio clip of Halo's announcer saying "Battle royale." 343 Industries has not confirmed a Battle Royale mode in Halo Infinite, and has even said in the past that they weren't interested in adding it. Of course, this could be nothing; maybe an old file leftover from a test that didn't get very far, but still. The fact that there's even an audio clip with the phrase Battle Royale being said has got to suggest Microsoft was thinking about it. In other shooter news, a fan-made remaster of Half-Life 2, titled the Remastered Collection, may actually hit Steam, and with Valve's blessing, no less. It's being made by the modding team that also did Half-Life 2: Update back in 2015, which added visual enhancements to HL2 and its two expansions. No word yet on what exactly is in the latest Half-Life 2 Remastered Collection and how it's different from Update. And finally, if you're looking for more color choices for the PS5 DualSense controller, McDonald's almost had another option. An internal image of a McDonald's-themed controller, with fries and a Big Mac on the handles (of course) got out to the press, leading some to think McDonald's and Sony have something going on. Well, they don't, and the image was made as a concept. McDonald's has not approached PlayStation for any collaboration on a controller (yet). Bummer. Not gonna lie, kinda dug that look. Anyway, it's your Daily Fix!

Hololens 2: Ein magischer Sprung?
