This week's #machinima short is ridiculous, yep Ridiculous Ties - a meme response to Eltorro64Rus' review of favorite and least favorite words used by the Scientist in Half Life, created by Finzlow. And did we say its ridiculous?! We love the well-crafted humor in this, in-jokes with some of the best timing and inspired editing we've seen for quite some time. Although its strictly not machinima, it is definitely from a machinima stable, so it counts for us at least. Matthew and Noah share a few of the most perplexing Marx Brothers mysteries they've encountered in their research, which have remained unsolved despite considerable effort. No, this episode is not about Humor Risk or the manicurist. But Matthew will walk you down winding paths of confusion regarding the authorship of The Big Store and Double Dynamite, and Noah will call your attention to a Marx Bros. Scrapbook anomaly that can only be explained ridiculously.

At brioux.tv, most podcasts deal with the people who make television memories. What about, however, people who collect TV memorabilia? We're talking toys and games, trading cards, comic books, autographs and puzzles?Meet Canada keeper of every boomer's childhood memories: Bruce Button. For close to 50 years, Button has been buying, selling and curating TV merch, specialising in pop memorabilia from the ‘60s. On this podcast, I visit his Hamilton, Ont., house, where four rooms are jammed full of Man from U.N.C.L.E. posters, Hogan's Heroes and Beverly Hillbillies lunch boxes and board games based on everything from The Addams Family and Alf to Snagglepuss and Stingray. His collection doesn't stop there. His Beatles, Charlie Brown, Marx Bros. and Three Stooges goodies, not to mention his comic book, TV Guide and record collections, could fill at least one room alone. If, like me, you still have a full set of Batman cards from the ‘60s, or a Kenner's Give-a-Show Projector – or even if you simply know what those things are – you'll want to listen in as Button gives a guided tour of his broadcast booty. His stories about meeting everyone from Channel 47's Chuck the Night Watchman (Chas Lawther) to Tiny Tim are, well, one-of-a-kind.If you want to see some of his treasures, check out the photos posted at brioux.tv.
Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we bring you part one of our interview w/ the children of zany comedian Harry Ritz, Janna Taninbaum & Michael Ritz. The reason this became a two part episode was because of some terrible technical issues which forced us to abort our initial conversation and pick it up two days later. What's that old showbiz adage, “Never give a sucker an even break?” No, that's not it, it's “The show must go on” and true to their showbiz roots, Janna and Michael did just that. And we thank them for it. For many of you, the Ritz Brothers were a comedy/dance team that has been spoken about in hushed tones for years but unless you were born before the Johnson Administration, you likely haven't had the chance to see the Ritz Brothers perform. Due to many strange and offbeat scenarios, we get into why that's the case on this episode. But in their day, the Ritz Brothers were not only wildly popular but were some of the highest paid performers in the world. Different than the Marx Brothers, The Ritz Brothers were essentially Harry Ritz who was THE comedian other comedians influenced. From Jerry Lewis to Don Rickles to Mel Brooks, everyone said Harry Ritz was the funniest, wackiest comedian they ever saw. So let's right some wrongs here and talk about the best and funniest comedy team you perhaps have never seen, The Ritz Brothers. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story. Sometimes two!

Groucho, Zeppo, Gummo, Chico, and Harpo--also known as The Marx Brothers--not only changed the way we think of comedy, but they helped shape our modern notions of cinema as well. Does their biting wit and chaotic humor hold up today? I absolutely think so. In fact, I think we need a lot more humor today to help us break the tensions that we feel on a daily basis--and our guest agrees. Dr. Robert Weir is a retired history professor who most recently taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He's a former senior Fulbright scholar to New Zealand, a past president of the Northeast Popular Culture Association, and the author of 11 books and numerous other academic works. We talk about comedy today, do college-age students get the humor of the Marx Bros, the anti Semitism that they faced, and the origins of their rise to stardom. If you have never seen a a Marx Bros. film, drop everything and go check out A Night at the Opera or my personal favorite, Horsefeathers. In fact, you stay here and I'll drop everything and go watch a Marx Bros. film. It's our final episode of You Must Remember Mixed and we've got some zany brothers to send us off! That's right, It's the Marx Bros' A Day at the Races (1937) (we incorrectly attribute it to '35 in the ep, our bad!) Doctor Hugo Hackenbush, Tony, and Stuffy try and save Judy's farm by winning a big race with her horse. There are a few problems. Hackenbush runs a high priced clinic for the wealthy who don't know he has his degree in Veterinary Medicine. Does Cassandra's childhood favourite hold up on inspection? What the hell is the plot? Is James going to be chill with so many rogue horses? All this and more in our final look in the series. Whatever we land on for A Day at the Races, check out some old movies and Don't Worry Darlings, we'll be back with something new very soon!

Part 1 of this episode is sad and heavy. Part 2 is funny and, ahem, zany. Matt and Tim talk the brilliant irreverence of the Marx Bros and Duck Soup (as with all screwballs, thorough discussion of favorite gags ensues). Tim introduces two romance screwballs in The Palm Beach Story and What's Up, Doc?, both of which pay homage to and, fittingly, muck up the typical genre formula with some heady filmmaking.
INTERVIEW BEGINS AT: 17:59 As per legend. one night in Nacogdoches, Texas in the year 1912, a group of vaudeville performers turned on their audience, dropped the act and comedy history changed forever, Soon Leonard, Adolph, Julies, Milton (and later baby brother Herbert) became Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo (and later Zeppo) or just simply The Marx Brothers.... Vaudeville headlining followed, then to Broadway, for not one, not two, not even four!! but three amazingly successful shows, next step, talkies...as by 1929 Movies had sound, and who better to talk to an audience than Groucho Marx, and in one of the earliest talking pictures the Marx Brothers had a smash hit with their stage show Coconuts, followed by their stage hit Animal Crackers in 1930, then off to Hollywood and from 1931 to 1949 the Brothers appeared in 11 more films, (12 if you count The Story Of Mankind) and became icons forever, whos careers lasted until their deaths, and their legacy lives on to this day. The first of their Broadway shows, I'll Say She Is, was never filmed, and thought a lost relic of a time past, that is until Noah Diamond spent years finding out all there was to know about this gem, and actually PUT THE SHOW ON. Today we are thrilled to be joined by Noah to discuss all things Marxist check out his site at https://www.noahdiamond.com/ So kick back, enjoy and please rate and share the show..let's keep the audience growing. While you might not be able to dust for vomit, you can definitely podcast about THIS IS SPINAL TAP. This week we're joined by the editor of heavyhorror.com, & metalhead encyclopedia, Breanna Whipple. Raquel realizes a teen student of hers was constantly quoting the film, a movie is so quotable that its become part of common pop culture even to people who have never seen it. She also sees a throughline from The Marx Bros to this. There's an (un)surprising amount of drummer talk. Raquel and Breanna love the over the top sexual lyrics of the songs. Raphael tells some personal anecdotes about Spinal Tap-esque moments from his musical career. Is SPINAL TAP secretly a punk movie? Raquel tries desperately to explain why this film isn't quite as gross as more modern comedies, despite armadillos being in the bands' trousers. This is definitely a fun one! The Generation Splice is film podcast where retired psychologist Dr. Raquel Martinez, a Baby Boomer through & through, & her son Raphael Jose Martinez, a cranky millennial punk rocker/film writer, discuss various films through the lens of their generation & personal experiences. Every week one host picks a film to dissect & see if they can splice together the generation gap via their love of film. Feel free to write to us! Give us some film suggestions at thegenerationsplice@gmail.com or @gensplicepod on Twitter. Raphael is on Twitter at @citycelluloid. You can find his film writing at cinefile.info and film-cred.com The show is produced by The Martinez Family & the show's theme song was written, performed, & produced by Raphael.
Frank Ferrante is an accomplished stage actor, director, and veteran comedian. He has embraced many roles, most notably playing Groucho Marx in the stage production of Groucho: A Life in Revue and the PBS film Frank Ferrante’s GROUCHO. In this episode of Hungry Trilobyte, Frank and I spend a lot of time talking about how comedy works, what makes live theater so amazing (and how we’ll feel about it after being in lockdown for so long) as well as how Marx Bros-style comedy works in the age of podcasts and YouTube. Today’s episode “Jane, Billy Said Get In The Car!!” highlights a writing team match made in heaven. World of Walley welcomes Billy VanZandt. He and his writing partner, the late Jane Milmore, are two of the most often produced playwrights in the world. Billy and Jane met at a high school acting competition in their home state of New Jersey. Together for 46 years, they wrote and starred in 25 plays together, including the international hit comedy "You've Got Hate Mail;" Off-Broadway's tribute to slapstick comedy "Silent Laughter;" cult favorite ""Drop Dead"; the Marx Bros. musical "A Night at the Nutcracker;" and the summer stock stock perennial "Love, Sex, and the IRS." Billy's solo play "The Property Known as Garland" starring his ex-wife Adrienne Barbeau broke box office records at Off-Broadway's Actors Playhouse. The plays have been produced in thousands of theaters worldwide, including two productions directed by Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis ("Billy and Jane are funny, outrageous, off-the chart writers/performers") and one by film legend Burt Reynolds. For television, these award-winning writers have produced over three hundred hours of television comedy, including "Newhart;" "Martin," which won them a People's Choice Award; "The Hughley's," which won them a Prism Award;" "Suddenly Susan" for Brooke Shields; "Daddy Dearest" for Don Rickles and Richard Lewis; "Anything But Love" for Jamie Lee Curtis and Richard Lewis; "The Wayans Bros."; and "I Love Lucy: The Very First Show" which won them an Emmy nomination. As an actor, Billy made his film debut in "Jaws 2"; co-starred with George C Scott, Tim Hutton, Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, Giancarlo Esposito, and Evan Handler in "Taps;" and has starred in over 300 theatrical plays including the 25 he penned with Miss Milmore. Billy lives in Los Angeles, when he's not touring the world in the last Van Zandt/Milmore musical, "The Boomer Boys Musical." We also discuss his book, “Jane Get In The Car!” and just for fun his connection to the Southern Rock Bands 38 Special and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Listen and enjoy. Oh, hey guys! This week I ask my friend Andrew Mercado to tell me all about Brain Donors. Why was this movie made in 1992 and not 1892? How come no one donates their brain in this movie? Tim slowly encroaches on Matt’s music territory with another week of musical theming, in the form of full interludes this week. With the Marx Bros’ romp A Night at the Opera as his inspiration, Tim guides us through two very-not-Marx-Bros-like films that also make weighty use of well-timed Musical Interludes: Short Cuts and Anatomy of a Murder.
PRESENTING...AN ALL-NEW MUSICAL AUDIO COMEDY -- In the style of a Marx Brothers movie! It's Do I Specter? I'll Say I Do! produced especially for World Audio Drama Day 2020. Written, produced and directed by life-long Marx Brothers fan Pete Lutz, 63audio presents a scenario unlike anything seen in any Marx Bros. film: Mr. Woodrow Fillmore Protoplasm is a ghost-hunter, hired to rid Stately Manor on Long Island of the ghost of the widow's late husband, who refuses to cross over. A little later, he's also hired by an Italian piano player whose brother's ghost won't cross over, either. And then, Protoplasm's son meets up with yet another ghost, who's been hiding in Stately Manor for 30 years! It's spooks a-plenty for our heroes, and for you, our listeners! Chock-full of Marx-style humor and hijinks, this new play also features two new songs, composed especially for this production by Pete Lutz, and orchestrated by Dr. Ross Bernhardt. Set your Ouija Boards for laughter! DISCLAIMER: This production was recorded remotely during the month of September 2020 in the (soon-to-be-historical, we hope) COVID-19 pandemic. Sound quality of the actors' microphones as a result varies. We hope this does not take away from your overall enjoyment of this play. (But if it does, well, there's not much you can do about it.) Nov Shmoz Ka Pop? Writer & artist Paul C. Tumey joins the show to talk about his fantastic new book, Screwball: The Cartoonists Who Made The Funnies Funny (IDW Publishing). We get into where screwball cartooning began, how he selected the 15 cartoonists profiled in the book (like Herriman, Segar, Rube Goldberg, and Frederick Opper), the ways in which the book is an attempt at explaining the parentage of Mad Magazine, the nuances of biography and his work at humanizing his subjects, and how screwball cartooning intersected with with vaudeville & film (and how the Marx Bros. got their names) and why it's the subject of his next book. We also talk about how we're coping with pandemic-panic and his latest binge-reads & -shows. • More info at our site • Find all our COVID Check-In episodes • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

Strap in folks, this is a long one. But it's worth it. Joe gives us his thoughts on "Hustlers" (00:18:00) which quickly turns into a heated altercation between him and Garry after he mentions that he doesn't like Lizzo. It explodes into much more and in the end, barely anything was left of either party. We then, after many a tangent, give our thoughts on the comedy classic Marx Bros film "Duck Soup". (00:39:20) and finish off with more IMDB trivia (01:25:00). Also, Patrick talks about his new toaster, Joe alters history, Brandon loses a tree, and Garry has a hard time talking in general.
Comic Joe Dungan joins host Steve Mazan to discuss the four Marx Brothers last movie at Paramount "Duck Soup" Is this their best film? Did Zeppo get the biggest laugh? Happy New Year, Mass Movieciders! Let’s kick off 2014 with a brand spankin’ new BONUS EPISODE! Last month, Mass Moviecide had the privilege of attending the screening and awards ceremony for THE ULTIMATE FILMMAKER CHALLENGE, in New York City. The Ultimate Filmmaker Challenge (or TUF) is a reoccurring competition in which filmmakers are tasked with assembling a team and making a short film from start to finish in just 7 days. At the beginning of the challenge, each team is assigned 3 criteria for their film; a prop, a line of dialogue, and a genre. No two teams receive the same criteria, and each team also gets to come up with the criteria for another team. In the most recent competition, 14 teams raced against time to put their visions on the big screen, and their tireless work was obvious. However, only one team can come out on top, and that was Team Bridging and director Brian Pollock with their film, “LUCKY DAY”. Team Bridging had the following criteria: Prop: A cheeseburgerLine: “I love Harry Potter.”Genre: Dark Comedy The result is “LUCKY DAY”. A comedic short that covers everything from job loss to eviction to auto-erotic asphyxiation. “Lucky Day” had TUF audiences laughing out loud as the lead character (played by director Brian Pollock) walked them through what is certainly an unarguably bad day, to say the least. Brian and Team Bridging received the title of “The Ultimate Filmmaker”, as well as a cash prize and a host of other goodies. Brian was cool enough to sit down with us, in-studio, to discuss his experience with The Ultimate Filmmaker Challenge. We also got into other topics including his background in film/theater/and radio, his comedic influences like the Marx Bros., and Abbot & Costello, and why it’s a great idea for other filmmakers of all levels to enter The Ultimate Filmmaker Challenge. If you want to check out Brian’s film, “LUCKY DAY”, you can view it on YouTube at the following link: http://youtu.be/ysn-JVsRUCE To check out THE ULTIMATE FILMMAKER CHALLENGE online visit: http://theultimatefilmmaker.com/ To visit THE ULTIMATE FILMMAKER CHALLENGE on Facebook, click here:https://www.facebook.com/TheUltimateFilmmaker
