¡lo has adivinado!

00:00 - INTRO: The 60+ MPG Commute-Crushing HybridIf I wanted a used vehicle that gets amazing fuel economy at a far more reasonable price than a used Tesla, I would buy the first hybrid sold in the US. It's a vehicle that had an amazing EPA fuel economy rating and it's a car I still geek out over today, in spite of the fact that the earliest examples are more than 20 years old and they're not exactly fast. In fact, I'd say they're more… funky. And no, it's not a Prius, but I'll tell you what it is and why you might want one in just a moment, so hop in, buckle up and let's go for a drive! 01:20 - OPEN – Hybrid Technology Offered The Best Fuel Economy In The Early 2000'sToday it's electric vehicles, but 20+ years ago, if you wanted great fuel economy, you had to get a hybrid. The Prius was the first one to be launched in 1997, but it was a Japan-only model for the first couple of years and it wouldn't come to the US until model year 2000. 02:25 – The 2000 Honda Insight – The First Modern Hybrid Vehicle Available In The USIn spite of Toyota's Prius being the first mass-produced hybrid, Honda beat the Prius to American soil with the introduction of their first Hybrid, the 2-seat Honda Insight. While the Prius had impressive fuel economy, the Insight crushed it with a 61-city and 70-mpg EPA highway MPG rating. 03:35 - 2000-2006 Honda Insight is a more modern interpretation of the 1980s Civic CRX HFIntroduced in 1984 to the US market, the Honda CRX was a sporty, lightweight, front-wheel drive, 2-door hatch back that in its highest horsepower configuration (the CRX Si) offered sports car like performance that could give a comparable year Toyota's MR2 or Pontiac's V6 Fiero a run for their money. But in addition to the Si model, Honda also offered an HF or high fuel mileage version of the CRX that was equipped with a more fuel efficient engine and taller gearing to improve fuel economy. For comparison, the base model 1984 CRX with a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission has a revised EPA fuel economy rating of 38 city / 48 highway and 41-mpg combined. That's better highway mileage than the first Prius and matches the combined Prius rating of 41 mpg… without the complication of a hybrid power train. Of course, the CRX was much lighter because it was a smaller 2-seat vehicle, plus it didn't have to meet model year 2000 crash standards. But still, the fuel economy of the 1.3-liter 1984 CRX was impressive. Fast-forward 16-years and the 2000 Honda Insight Hybrid expanded on those numbers with even more impressive fuel economy. When first introduced, the EPA rating for the Insight was 61-mpg city / 70-mpg highway and 65 MPG combined. Those numbers were later revised to 49-city/61-highway/53-mpg combined. Yet even the revised EPA fuel economy estimates for the First Generation Honda Insight are impressive by today's fuel economy standards. So if that piques your interest, let's get into why you might want a 2000-2006 First Generation Honda Insight. 05:45 - You Might Want A First-Generation Honda Insight If… You want a car that gets amazing fuel economy, especially for a long-distance daily commute, but you don't want to pay the price required to buy a new or even a used EV with decent driving range between charges. You don't need to carry more than one extra person and a small amount of gear. So the big hold-back on the First Gen Insight for many was seating capacity. It has 2-seats with about 5-cubic feet of space to store items under the rear...

Yet there are a few new faces but not enough to make a larger impact on the need and value of training. How do we connect with people who do not seek out training on their own Paying for training, room, board, and time off needs to be the standard in the industry   When Issac owned his shop, he made the same mistake that so many shop owners today are making and not supporting 100% of his technician's training requirements (registration, room, board, and making their pay whole) Only shop owners who attend training can see the value. Once they attend, they are all over it and turn their training commitment into a pillar of their company Training pays it does not cost There are many deals available for equipment for pennies on the dollar from shops that are liquidating. This a sign of the times when shop owners hesitate to become a business person The first hybrid in the US was Honda Insight in 1999 Many of our young trainers have never set a carburetor   Job security to work on ICE (Internal Combustion Engines) for many, many years to come as the age of the car grows by about 6 months per year and we currently are at 12.9 yrs Buy a used 2005-2009 Toyota Prius to work on, to use as a training vehicle, and to wrap with the wording ‘We Service Hybrids.' There is a worst-case scenario from Toyota about placing the keys about 20' from the car when doing an oil change. Verify the car is off when doing an oil change on the IC Engine Issac and Keith are in the Mobile Diag. The dynamic of the job is changing because many shops are tooling up, and there is more competition than ever Big pivot to remote programming Issac encourages the young generation to go to training and will sponsor someone each year to go to ASTE If senior members of a shop avoid going to training, invest in your young people. 20% of technicians are 55 -64 average age from a survey. Astonishing number In high school, 90% of men worked on their cars back in the day when there was shop class Today very few high schools have shop classes and must send their students to a co-op center Reference Bob Cooper Episodes with consumer panel

In this episode of the Carmudgeon show, part-time ambulance chaser Jason Cammisa befriends some forbidden freeway fruit in form of the Volkswagen XL1 — a car that hardly exists at all, let alone on a California freeway at 11 PM. Jason recounts his seat time in the mirrorless, peak-Piëch Bugatti Veyron of MPG and how its small-footprint journey across the US makes for a large-footprint cause — more on that below. Side effects may include a string of broken-necked Bolt drivers and/or a stay in your local hospital. Derek and Jason make some other low-drag comparisons, such as the ill-fated GM EV-1 and original Honda Insight. Jason recounts vivid childhood memories of a 1975 Chevy Impala wagon and a GM hotline that served solely to feed his growing curiosity of facts and figures. This somehow leads to a discussion (and confession) of the different terrible and elaborate ways that rental vehicle customers can cause havoc. Have you ever pulled a 6-liter Vortec out of a U-Haul and returned it with a lowly 4.8? Perhaps you've rented a Toyota Tercel and returned it within an inch of its life. We won't judge you. Maybe. Hoy puedes encontrar muchas opciones mecánicas distintas. It sounds daunting, but buying a car abroad is not difficult. Long before they even knew each other, both Jason and Derek had each turned a summer European vacation into a car-buying extravaganza. Importing a 25-year-old car into the U.S. isn’t difficult at all, and duty isn’t expensive.[NOTE: This episode was recorded in early March 2020 before the Coronavirus Social Distancing measures went into effect. We're glad to help stave off boredom while you #ShelterInPlace — anything to keep you home and keep you safe. Stay well, all of you. Love and distant kisses from all of us at ISSIMI.]In discussing what cars are on their personal To Buy lists, Derek and Jason realized that most of the cars they want were never sold in the U.S. — things like the Honda Beat, Autozam AZ-1, Suzuki Cappuccino, Daihatsu Copen, and other Japanese-market Kei Cars. On the opposite end of the spectrum are Derek’s Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 and Range Rover 2-door fetishes — and where the boys’ tastes overlap: at the Lotus Carlton. Built as a special-edition Opel / Vauxhall Omega, the Carlton was a 177-mph family sedan that infuriated everyone at the time for being socially unconscionable. But with a turbocharged straight-six, rear-wheel drive, and a manual transmission, it’s right up the Radwood-era enthusiast’s alley. The first-generation Honda Insight isn’t, even though Jason wants one. He also wants an original Honda S600 or S800 — but not an S2000. You’ll have to watch to find out why (hint: steering and gearing.) And you’ll hear the outrageous story of the R107 380SL Jason shipped to his dad, which got destroyed by the DEA at the port, thinking it was filled with drugs. So even though shipping a car across the globe is relatively inexpensive, it’s not without its risks. The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with. Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.
