Episode 235 - Pieta Brown

Something (rather than nothing)

The daughter of two preacher's kids, Pieta Brown's early upbringing in Iowa was in a rural outpost with no furnace, running water, or TV. There, she was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, Greg Brown, the now beloved Midwestern folk singer. Later, while living with her mother in Birmingham, Alabama during her formative years, Pieta drew on and expanded these influences and began writing poems and composing instrumental songs on piano. By the time she left home at 18 she had lived in at least 19 different houses and apartments between Iowa and Alabama. In her early 20's, after experiencing what she describes as "the songs calling,” Pieta started experimenting with the banjo and eventually picked up a 1930's Maybell arch-top guitar during a visit to her father's place and never looked back. Emerging from a disjointed and distinctly 'bohemian' upbringing, Pieta began performing live and making independent recordings soon after teaching herself how to play guitar. "I grew up around a lot of musicians and artists living on the fringe, and have always felt most at home among them," Pieta says.Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta is being recognized as one of modern Americana's true gems. In recent years Pieta has released multiple highly critically acclaimed albums, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style, but also the power of her singing and songwriting, including fan favorite Paradise Outlaw (2014 Red House, which Bon Iver master mind, Justin Vernon, called his “favorite recording made at our studio.”) Pieta has toured North America with Mark Knopfler, and toured various regions of the U.S., Australia and Canada with John Prine, Amos Lee, Brandi Carlisle, JJ Cale, Ani Difranco, Mavis Staples, and Calexico among others. She has co-written songs with and made recent guest appearances on albums by Calexico, Amos Lee, and Iris Dement, whose latest masterpiece Workin' On A World (2023) Pieta co-produced. Pieta's songs and music have been heard in various TV Shows and indie films including Everything Will Be Fine (Wim Wenders). With the release of her most recent album Freeway (September 2019, Righteous Babe) co-produced by Bon Iver drummer, S. Carey, followed by multiple experimental collaborations since with various artists including JT Bates, S.Carey, and Howe Gelb & The Colorist Orchestra, as well as a new instrumental based side-project she calls Sylvee & The Sea, Pieta's music and artistry continue to rise.~ "...a style and a sensuality that's all her own...."- Pop Matters~ "Among the top tier of songwriters today..." - FAME (Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange)~ "...a gifted singer-songwriter whose lyrics are pieces of polished poetry" - Huffington PostPieta's WebsiteSRTN Website

Sange som "Symptom of My Time", først og fremmest, "Save a Little Love", "Worth it" (2001) og "Under the Water" i et remix blev spillet igen og igen. Albummene "Where the Wind Turns the Skin to Leather" og "Kontinua", Franks første dansksprogede album, er ganske udmærkede danske americana-album.

Growing up in the melting pot of Tucson primed guitarist and singer Brian Lopez for absorbing the cultural music of other countries. Graduating from college with a background in classical guitar, Brian made a name for himself in the band Mostly Bears before striking out as both a solo artist and an acclaimed sideman. With his band Xixa, Brian has channeled his many influences into the new album "Genesis", a collection of songs that reflect the concerns of our Covid-rattled world. Pour yourself a big mug of chicha and kick back as Nick and Brian talk about touring in Europe, how an artist's political slant informs their art, and the rise of today's Seinfeld hipsters. HIGHLIGHTS: [01:09] Brian describes his new band, Xixa, and how they got started as a Peruvian chicha cover band [05:09] Xixa recorded their new album "Genesis" as a group, before the pandemic lockdown [06:33] The song "Land Where We Lie" was a blatant mix of South American cumbia music and 80s New Wave vibes [07:10] Brian explores the various themes touched on by the songs, and how the album's title has multiple meanings [09:55] Brian explains that not touring and being home has given him a deeper love of the craft of songwriting [11:34] Brian is a multi-instrumentalist with a classical guitar background, but he loves piano [13:03] Brian's band Mostly Bears survived their tours thanks to Wal-Mart's deli meats [16:09] Howe Gelb of Giant Sand became a mentor and "path finder" for Brian's career [17:43] Brian tries to find a balance between collaborations and his own personal projects [20:14] Brian appreciates the break from the business side of music that being a sideman provides [21:35] Brian has toured more overseas than here in the US because there were more opportunities [23:20] Xixa and "Genesis" are becoming very popular in South America, prompting a possible tour [24:14] Brian and Nick rave about the beauty and art culture of Mexico City [26:03] Brian participated in the Kennedy Center "Arts Across America" program during the lockdown [28:58] Brian feels more politically activated these days, and it's reflected in his art at times [29:58] Brian's musical influences range from pop of The Beatles to the thrash of Nirvana [32:10] It's official: the early 90s are back in fashion, both musically and stylistically [33:19] Brian can't stand the way the term "psychedelic" is applied so broadly to various styles of music [36:03] Brian loves being immersed in the blended cultures that make up the Tucson experience [38:13] Maintaining a studio during the pandemic has been tricky [39:37] Brian's opinions on certain artists have changed over time, as he comes to appreciate their art   Thanks for listening!

Recordamos a Oti. Hope you're enjoying the new season of Aquarium Drunkard's Transmissions. Here's a good one from the archives, a favorite of Timothy Showalter of Strand of Oaks a roundtable talk with three lifers: Howe Gelb, Robyn Hitchcock, and Steve Wynn. The three share similar paths through scenes and the industry, their paths are shared but divergent, and there’s a spiritual unity at work even in their differences. With his band Giant Sand, Howe Gelb pens strange, dusty songs about love and the desert. Both solo and with his Paisley Underground pioneering band the Dream Syndicate, Wynn composes driving minimalist rock sagas (a recent 11-disc boxset documents much of his range) . And after emerging from the UK punk scene with the Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock has embarked on a career full of wry and funny songs that skewer pop conventions. We spoke in August of 2018 when they performed at HOCO Fest in Tucson, Arizona, a place where they all share considerable history. This interview was recorded at the KXCI studio at the historic Hotel Congress. Please enjoy this one from the vault.

Songwriters Guild Live is a weekly radioshow in Amsterdam, focussed on artists who write their own songs. This week your host was Ro Halfhide. Bubblegum Slut/ UK: « A paradoxical mix of a Yorkshire man’s Northern bluntness that tells it like it is and a “continental poetic tongue which educates and stirs…! » - Stylusmag/ Canada: « Berry has a keen intellect, a disdain for those buffered from reality, and an internalized anger that fuels the vitriol in every adjective. It is real life undecorated, and smoulders like the everyday pressures. This is fucking brilliant. Clean glass please, and leave the bottle! » With the aid of an acoustic guitar or piano he sits centre-stage and recounts with his powerful seducing voice the tales of his life on the back streets of Leeds/England, his touring years through to his crippling road accident in Brighton/ England. In the 80s he was the guitarist & founding member to the successful Rock/Goth band, The Rose of Avalanche, which produced many great albums and singles. Eventually enough was enough and he broke up the band in the 90s and embarked on a solo career under his own name. He played in every possible venue in the UK and Europe. 3 solo albums later (PJB, Ginnel and Nations) which saw him support giants of the songwriting genre such as Frank Black, Vic Chestnutt, Kevin Coyne, David Bowie, Howe Gelb, Townes Van Zandt, he is now back. After rehabilitating from his accident, he has a new album ‘Spitfire Jukebox 1’. It’s mainly one instrument and voice that give a beautiful raw insight to the human soul. It reveals a personal account of the last few years. Touches on a cathartic necessity to get through the nightmare of his road accident to the celebration of life itself. Recorded in Berlin in the vast hall of the famous UFO-Studios, an old brewery which doubled-up as a bunker in the second world war. «when I arrived at the studio in Berlin, there was this colossal old hall that just had ‘something’ that moved me. So, I said to the man, get me a chair, put it in the middle of the hall and record me bleeding….» «the whole point of this album was to be in control and do everything myself - for good or bad - no rules and no bull shit! Just me and my demons>>

We’re back. The weather is beginning to turn. We’re almost there. Welcome to the September edition of the Transmissions podcast. On this episode, we sit down with three legends of independent music: psychedelic singer/songwriter Robyn Hitchcock, Giant Sand leader Howe Gelb, and Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate. Since emerging in the ‘80s, they’ve amassed incredible catalogs, and they’re all still making vital and poetic records. We spoke earlier this month at HOCO Fest, a multi-day festival in Tucson, Arizona. Sitting down at the KXCI studio at Hotel Congress, the three riffed on their years making music, how their sounds have evolved over the years, and what a lifelong commitment to making art looks like. But first, our conversation with Matt Sullivan of Light in the Attic Records, one of our longtime favorite reissue labels. We spoke live at Gold Diggers in East Hollywood as part of our Talk Show series – a set of live conversations centered around the worlds of music, art, film and beyond. LITA has released records by Rodriguez, Betty Davis, Lee Hazlewood, Jim Sullivan, Serge Gainsbourg, and has launched expansive archives like the Native North America and Japan Archival projects. How did Light in the Attic get started? Live on stage at Gold Diggers, Sullivan explained it all.

Howe Gelb's multiple-decade catalog is hard to pin down, but the one current that runs through it all is the Tucson, Arizona musician's warm-burning songwriting. The sometime Giant Sand leader pares down to a piano for his latest record, Future Standards, and accompanied only by a bassist, Gelb doubles down on the songwriting skills he's honed over his decades in this incandescent session with DJ Morgan. Recorded 2/4/2017 - 4 songs: Irresponsible Lovers, Sweet Confusion, A Book You've Read Before, Impossible ThingSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

My guest this week is the very creative and grooving drummer, John Convertino. Along with Joey Burns, John started Calexico in the mid-90's after a long stint playing and touring with the seminal group, Giant Sand. His work with Howe Gelb in Giant Sand brought him from LA to Tucson, where he's been living for many years, and has helped to develop a creative and nurturing music scene. Calexico has released a series of amazing albums, and John's unique approach to the drums is always a highlight. The group successfully mixes folk, rock, twang, mariachi, and avant-garde music into their sound, and it was great to discuss all of those elements with John, as well as his history playing in his family band, how he met Howe Gelb and started playing in LA, his move to the desert of Tucson, and his experiences recording and working in the studio. Enjoy my conversation with John Convertino!
