We had the pleasure of interviewing Eric Krasno over Zoom video! The idea of “losing yourself” may seem negative, but to Grammy-award winning guitarist Eric Krasno, the phrase has a deeper meaning. Featuring head-nodding handclaps, horns from Jazz Mafia, and a funkified bass line drive, Krasno's new single “Lost Myself”. Featured on his new solo album, ‘Always' is filled with songs like “Lost Myself,” which consecrate, commend, and celebrates the permanence of family. On ‘Always' – across ten tracks with inimitable instrumentation, eloquent songcraft, and raw honesty – the Soulive and Lettuce co-founder, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and two-time GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter-producer defines himself as not only an artist, but also as a husband, father, and man. “Lost Myself” follows the release of recent singles like “Silence,” about the emotional havoc that a lack of communication can wreak on the human psyche, and “Alone Together,” about the beauty that can be created between two people in solitude.Something of a musical journeyman, Krasno's extensive catalog comprises three solo albums, four Lettuce albums, twelve Soulive albums, and production and/or songwriting for Norah Jones, Robert Randolph, Pretty Lights, Talib Kweli, 50 Cent, Aaron Neville, and Allen Stone. As a dynamic performer, he's shared stages with Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, and The Roots. Out of seven nominations, he picked up two GRAMMY® Awards for his role as a songwriter and guitarist on Tedeschi Trucks Band's ‘Revelator' and guitarist on Derek Trucks Band's ‘Already Free.' But as the Global Pandemic changed the world's plans, he found himself thinking a lot and writing just as much. At the suggestion of old Lettuce bandmate Adam Deitch, he connected with musician and producer Otis McDonald and collaborated on a version of Bob Dylan's “The Man In Me,” a song that had taken on a deeper significance for Krasno in recent years. Recording first virtually and then at the Bay Area's legendary Hyde Street Studios, famous for 2Pac, Grateful Dead, and Digital Underground, Krasno and McDonald tapped into a shared spirit as co-producers, ultimately forming Eric Krasno & The Assembly with Otis on bass, Wil Blades on keys and organ, Curtis Kelly on drums, and James VIII on guitar and vocals. In the end, Krasno welcomes everyone to be a part of his family on ‘AlwaysWe want to hear from you! “... when I listened back to “The Man In Me,” I was like okay we created this via “satellite” … but it really felt live, and it had a feel ... It felt like we were a band.” -- Eric Krasno For the first episode of 2022, Eric Krasno returns to sit down with Otis McDonald to celebrate the release of their new album, Always! In this conversation, you'll hear an in-depth rundown of the making of the record, including the story of how the two met through Adam Deitch in the beginning of the pandemic, the genesis of the Otis McDonald project, and using demo vocals for final mixes on the album. They also talk about Otis' home base at Hyde Street Studios, which gave birth to classic albums by artists including the Grateful Dead and Herbie Hancock, using technology to work together remotely, and take a look inside of Kraz's musical headspace when he talks about the writing process for the album. Joe Bagale, also known as Otis McDonald, lives by the philosophy that there are only two kinds of music; good music and bad music. He was born in upstate New York, but his tenure in San Francisco was where he definitively honed his craft, releasing three albums under his name from 2008 to 2014. Following the success of his early releases, Joe was commissioned by YouTube to write and record 30 new tracks for their audio library, which was the beginning of a new project he calls Otis McDonald. Playing all the instruments, writing, producing, mixing, and mastering 30 songs in a 3 month period, it proves to be his funkiest and most interesting music to date. Joe has shared the stage with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, Mike Gordon, and many other legendary artists, and by the end of this episode, you'll know why he's had the success that he's had in recent years. In this episode, Andrew picks up where he left off in Part 1. He starts with the different bands and music projects he took part in during high school. He got a guitar and started writing solo songs when he was 16. Andrew shares the story of how he got his stage name. (Surprise! Andrew St. James isn't his real name.) It involves being totally smitten with a woman way, way older than he was at the time. After high school, he moved to Boston to go to Berklee School of Music. The twist—he got in on the wrong instrument. Turns out, he didn't dig college life too much. He had just released a record, Doldrums, and it got wide critical praise. He went to New York to play a show and was immediately awestruck by the city. It all led to Andrew quitting college and recording another album: The Shakes. In 2014, The Killers' manager called him and had him do a residency in North Beach. But San Francisco had changed so much in his short absence that Andrew moved to LA, a town that had been luring him. It turned out to be a wild but pretty brief stay, as the pull of San Francisco and family brought him back. Once he returned to The City, Andrew started playing with a friend and touring. He hooked up with a producer to start putting on shows at Amnesia, and with that, the Fast Times Presents series was born. For Andrew, the aim was to bring together San Francisco's many segregated music cliques. He's the first to admit the messiness of the music events. They eventually relocated to The Chapel to accommodate a bigger audience, but then the pandemic hit and Andrew took his show to the streets, literally. Starting in September this year, Fast Times Presents events have moved to Make-Out Room. The next show is tonight (Nov. 18). We end this podcast with Andrew reflecting on our Season 4 theme: We're still here. We recorded this podcast at Hyde Street Studios in the Tenderloin in November 2021. Andrew St. James's birth mom was a tour caterer for the Rolling Stones. In this episode, the musician traces his lineage back to his being adopted by a young San Francisco couple. Carol moved to San Francisco in 1971. She worked at the Gap and what used to be Live 105 and KMEL. Nathan was born in Brooklyn to Holocaust survivor parents. After his New York marriage fizzled, he hopped on a motorcycle and rode to San Francisco in 1978. Nathan and some friends opened the original Captain Video stores. The two met when Nathan went to buy radio advertising from Carol. The couple lived in Glen Park when they adopted Andrew, then they all moved to the Sunset District, where Andrew was raised. Andrew shares early memories from both neighborhoods. He sang in the San Francisco Boys Choir for a number of years before getting jaded at a young age. He decided to branch out more on his own, and so he bought an organ. He soon began playing rock music with friends roughly his age—12. Andrew got into Urban High School, which he shares the background and philosophy of for us. Andrew says that by the time he entered high school, in the late-2000s, that philosophy had more or less gone by the wayside. Check back Thursday for Part 2 and the continuation of Andrew's life story. Shout out to Ashley Graham for connecting us with Andrew. Whether you're a hardcore Crosby fanatic or just a fan of creative, innovative, soul-soothing music, you'll love what Steve has in store. The episode continues by rejoining David at Hyde Street Studios (formerly Wally Heider's, where the album was recorded 50 years ago), to hear more stories about the recording of this all-time classic album, as well as tales of meeting the Beatles as a member of the Byrds and turning George Harrison onto the music of Ravi Shankar, Jerry Garcia's distinctive gift to one of David's greatest tracks, “Laughing,” how hard it is to sit in successfully with the Grateful Dead, and meeting acid king and sonic alchemist Owsley Stanley in LAX. You'll also hear David talk about the essence of what music means to him.Freak Flag Flying is brought to you by Osiris Media. Interview and editing by Steve Silberman. Welcome back to season two of Freak Flag Flying! Over the course of the next two episodes, music legend David Crosby and his friend and bestselling author Steve Silberman will take you inside the studio (literally) for an all-encompassing look at David's timeless masterpiece, If I Could Only Remember My Name, with their conversations taking place in the very building that it was recorded in over 50 years ago, Hyde Street Studios (formerly Wally Heider's). Along with their in-depth discussion, listeners will have the opportunity to hear some Crosby tracks that have never been heard by the public before!Today's episode features David taking Steve through the journey of making the album and collaborating with his friends and musical geniuses like Joni Mitchell, members of the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane co-founders Paul Kantner, and Grace Slick. David goes on to explain his friendship and profound musical connection with Jerry Garcia, discovering Joni Mitchell and bringing her to Los Angeles, and the tragedy that struck just prior to the IICORMN sessions -- a loss that can still be felt deeply in the words and melodies of the album. David also expounds upon his affinity with open tunings and tuning by ear rather than digitally, which contributed immensely to the distinctively luminous sound of the album, as recorded by Wally Heider's brilliant in-house engineer Stephen Barncard.Freak Flag Flying is brought to you by Osiris Media. For RE:WARM 006 we present a collection of music from one of San Francisco's best kept secrets, Dr Robert Blackman. "The Unimaginable DreamWorks" is a collection of five tracks from three musical masterpieces he put out between 1983-1985 on his own Riverwinds imprint. A practising chiropractor by day with his own holistic health centre in San Francisco, these songs became his love, passion and focus. Together with Michael Pluznick, a very accomplished percussionist they painstakingly put together an ensemble of musicians to bring the tracks to life. The melting pot for this body of work was Hyde Street Studios which still today is based in deepest San Francisco and has seen names such as Neil Young, Earth Wind & Fire and John Waters to name a few grace its studio space. Singers and musicians alike came together from all over the world to bring Robert’s vision to reality. This included an Australian didgeridoo player, an electric violin and piano player from Paraguay as well as singers and a choir from the surrounding local churches. Together through Dr Robert Blackman's eyes they created a fabulous sound of twisted disco punk funk like no other that still sounds relevant today as it did back in the eighties. The energy and the stories are clear to hear throughout the five tracks which make up "The Unimaginable DreamWorks” of Dr. Robert Blackman 1983-1985. Artwork was key to the releases and the “Peace Is Alive” painting incorporated on the label of the release appeared in TIME magazine in 1984 when Dr Robert Blackman was treating combat vets, suffering from PTSD and this was the name of the job fair for veterans he set up. To promote the album at the time Dr Robert Blackman flew up over San Francisco in a single engine prop airplane loaded with 50,000 leaflets. Strapped in at 500 feet the leaflets were dropped on the city of San Francisco! The following day, the media descended on his holistic health centre, called Riverwinds and in turn he was fined $1,000 for the cleanup! Dr Robert Blackman's "The Unimaginable DreamWorks" is out on Friday May 28th both digitally and physically.

The first of a short two-part series featuring the music of cities where Dylan did not record his studio albums. Part one emphasizes important recording centers in the United States and part two will emphasize important recording centers throughout the world. We start with Sun Records and then stay in Memphis for some Stax recordings. From there we go to Chicago and the Chess Recording Studio, before moving to Wally Heider Studios (now Hyde Street Studios) in San Francisco, to Detroit with Hitsville, USA and Third Man Studios, and then finally to Seattle where Nirvana and many other bands recorded at Reciprocal Recording. In "Who Did It Better?" we ask you who did "Train of Love" better: Johnny Cash, as recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis, or Bob Dylan?
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Neverlutionaries' over Zoom video/audio! The Neverlutionaries' self-titled debut LP album is an unfiltered expression of the heart that seamlessly straddles moods and genres. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist songwriter Christopher Harold Wells and bound by his distinctively soulful timbre, the eponymous eight-song release tints hook-laden alternative rock with psychedelia, shoegaze-y jazz, and subtle funk.Having originally made his name in the vibrant North Carolina music scene (notably with Peasants of the Apocalypse), Wells has been performing, recording and producing in San Francisco for the last few years. As well as songwriter, he‟s also an exceptional melodic rock vocalist, bassist and guitarist. Wells currently divides his time between SF and Nashville.Testament to Wells‟ stylistic versatility and open-mindedness is a resume that includes playing in The All Time Low Stars with Peter Keys of Lynyrd Skynyrd; working with everyone from Lauryn Hill to Bubba Sparxxx; and opening for the diverse likes of Metallica, Aquarium Rescue Unit and Def Leppard. Not one to chase trends, his music has always been hard to pigeonhole. His influences include everything from the church choirs of his youth, to Rush and Tool; Kaskade and The Cure, to The Mars Volta, Massive Attack, and even Joy Division. But he reserves perhaps most respect for artists like Prince and Jimmy Page, who‟ve mingled multiple genres while maintaining the essence of their expression. The Neverlutionaries comprises a core line-up of regulars at San Fran‟s legendary Hyde Street Studios, augmented by an all-star cast of guest players. Constants are SF staple and frequent Wells collaborator Chris McGrew of Pamela Parker‟s Fantastic Machine on drums; fellow Fantastic Machiner Ryan Hickey on keys; and former Psychefunkapus guitarist Jonnie Axtell. For future touring, blazing Nashville six-stringer Kenny Olson (Bootsy Collins, Sheryl Crow etc.) and original Brian Jonestown Massacre member Ricky Maymi are tapped to join them.Helmed by #1 Billboard charting producer Jaimeson Durr (Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani etc.), The Neverlutionaries was recorded in Hyde Street‟s storied Studio C, where classic albums by the Grateful Dead, Santana, and Creedence Clearwater Revival were cut. The LP is preceded by otherworldly balladin-waiting, “Ariana”.In a modern music landscape choked with bands making music to match commercial expectations, The Neverlutionaries mark a refreshing return to simply, yet expertly, just doing what feels and sounds right, free of creative margins.“Ariana” will be accompanied by a music video in late October, with Neverlutionaries live-stream events and – once safe to do so – touring planned to further support their debut LP. The Neverlutionaries‟ selftitled debut was just released by Polychromatic Records on January 21, 2021We want to hear from you! John Cuniberti’s own site says his music career began as a 70’s rock drummer playing in Eddie Money’s first rock band, The Rockets. When the group disbanded in 1973, John turned his attention to live sound engineering. In 1975 John helped design and build a touring sound reinforcement company and soon found himself mixing on-stage monitors for Stevie Wonder. In the early 80’s John became chief engineer at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco. There he recorded three Dead Kennedys albums and dozens of other punk, metal, and alternative bands of the era. By the early 1990s, John received both platinum and gold records for co-producing and engineering six Joe Satriani records, including Satriani’s ground-breaking 1988 “Surfing with the Alien.” Also throughout the 90’s, John continued to produce and engineer hundreds of albums both in the US and abroad. It was during this time that John designed, manufactured and sold the first commercially available reamping device called the Reamp. He also helped design and build three Bay Area recording studios. In 2000 John opened a CD mastering suite at the world-famous Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito. For the next eight years, John crafted his skills in the art of mastering. During his time there, John mastered over one thousand CDs for both major and independent record labels including Tracy Chapman, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Thomas Dolby, Aaron Neville, Jesse Colin Young and the Grateful Dead. In 2008 John won a Grammy for his mastering work on “Global Drum Project” by Mickey Hart and Zakir Hussain. After leaving The Plant in 2008, John built a mixing and mastering studio in his home. In this studio, he continues to work on projects for Joe Satriani, Sammy Hagar, PJ Harvey, Chickenfoot, Kevin Gilbert, the Neville Brothers, the Funky Meters, jazz guitarist George Cole and many others. In In 2016 John began work on his YouTube channel entitled “OneMic the minimalist recording series.” In this series of eleven videos, John demonstrates how he records an entire band around one stereo microphone with remarkable results. The series has been so successful that a new set of eight videos will be recorded and filmed at Sun Studios in Memphis and Muscle Shoals in the spring of 2018. If you are used to our usual theme song, do not adjust your iPod at the beginning of this episode. This week, we open music from this week's guest conversationalist, Micropixie. It is the title track to her latest album, Dark Sight of the Moon, and yes she does realize that sounds like another album you may have heard of. Throughout this episode, you will hear a few other songs sprinkled into the mix, including “Nocturnal Concrete Mountaineering” from her first album, Alice In Stevie Wonderland, as well as “New Year's Day” and “Back To Our Future” from the new one. Micropixie is one alter ego of musician, artist, and self-identifying intergalactic pop tart Neshma Friend. Micropixie is an alien come to Earth to study humans, perplexed at our behavior towards one another. She is not alone. Friend's other alter ego, Single Beige Female, isn't having a good go of it, either. Through the eyes of these characters, Friend is both pointed and playful, taking on weightier topics like gender politics and global conflict. And she does all of that over instrumental tracks that are laidback and groovy. As I say later on in this interview, this is definitely headphone music, ideal for a good set of old fashioned cans on a home stereo. Or these days, some noise-cancelling headphones Bose or Beats. Either way, this music demands your attention. We start the conversation talking about one of Friend's earlier jobs, exchanging currency for tourists in Paris, which she did not enjoy nearly as much as making music. You can find out more about what she's up to at micropixie.com, and search for her on Facebook and Twitter. She's be hosting an album release party at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco on April 9. Dark Sight of the Moon will be available as a BandCamp exclusive on April 12 and will get a wider release on April 26. Our featured track this week comes from comedian Jess Salomon, whom you may remember as our guest on episode 54 of the Department of Tangents Podcast. Salomon has an interesting back story. Before she started comedy, she studied law and worked for a U.N. tribunal on war crimes. A Canadian transplant, she now lives in New York, where she recorded this album in November at the New York Comedy Club. Her comedy can be political, but also a bit silly, as you'll hear on this track, “Duels.” The album is called All the Best Choices, and it was released earlier this week. Find out more about Jess at www.jesssalomon.com, and look for her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
