Jakob Nielsen addresses some of the criticism he's faced, calls on UXers to urgently adopt AI, and shares why he believes the commoditisation of UX is a good thing. Highlights include: Are you surprised by how much you've offended some people? Why do UXers need a greater sense of urgency about adopting AI? Were the hiring practices at your previous company elitist? What is the state of UX today and where is the growth potential? Will AI impede our ability to develop our professional judgement? ====== Who is Jakob Nielsen, PhD? Jakob is the founder of UX Tigers, the website and associated substack he uses to bring his 41 years of UX knowledge and experience to the world, in what he has described as a plainspoken, hard-hitting and not bowing to orthodoxy kind-of-way. Before founding UX Tigers, Jakob was the co-founder and principal - for 25 years - of a rather well known UX consultancy, the Nielsen Norman Group. His other notable roles include being a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems, and a member of the research staff at Bell Communications Research - one of the world's top three HCI labs in the 1990s. Jakob is known for many other things, among which are being the founder of the discount usability movement, the foundational 10 usability heuristics for user interface design, and the eponymously named Jakob's Law of Internet User Experience.  He is the holder of no less than 79 United States patents and the author of 8 books, including the best-selling “Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity”, “Usability Engineering”, and the pioneering “Hypertext and Hypermedia”. In 2013, Jakob received the Lifetime Achievement Award for HCI Practice from ACM SIGCHI and in 2024 he was named a “Titan of Human Factors” by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. ====== Find Jakob here: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jakobnielsenphd/ Website: https://www.uxtigers.com/ ====== Liked what you heard and want to hear more? Avalonia XPF This episode of The Modern .NET Show is supported, in part, by Avalonia XPF, a binary-compatible cross-platform fork of WPF, enables WPF apps to run on new platforms with minimal effort and maximum compatibility. Show Notes Hateos allows you to add links to the actions you can perform with the data you're returning. So imagine a tweet and imagine, for example, just a links. It's just an object with some arrays. And one of the links could be a retweet link or like a favourite link or like a delete link. And each link contains a type, which is like the HTTP type, it contains the URL to where you perform this action, and it also contains like a name. So kind of human readable kind of name. So like like retweet, delete, stuff like that. —Sander ten Brinke Welcome to The Modern .NET Show! Formerly known as The .NET Core Podcast, we are the go-to podcast for all .NET developers worldwide and I am your host Jamie "GaProgMan" Taylor. In this episode, I spoke with Sander ten Brinke about HATEOAS and HTMX. These are two separate but complementary technologies which help to build reactive web applications. In fact, as Irina pointed out back in episode 2 of the current season (released on Sept 22nd, 2023), you're likely not building RESTful services if you're not doing HATEOAS. And HTMX is something, as you'll find out, which aims to simplify building HTML-based apps that utilise web-based APIs by taking care of the boilerplate JavaScript code that you might need to include, using a series of attributes that you can place on elements. So HTMX is in the principle, it's a JavaScript library, which you can use. So you can use it in your application to write a whole lot less JavaScript. Let's think back to the good old days, right, where we were writing, like, Web 1.0 applications and our servers were simply like, we're using HTML templating engines, which they still do. It worked and it worked fine, but it wasn't very interactive because then we kind of got to the point where we were like, we want to do some cool clients application, but we don't want to reload the page the entire time. And that is kind of where the SPA movement came along. We want to be able to have a rich interactive application where clicking a button or clicking multiple buttons, just a bit of the page refreshes, right? That's kind of the Web 2.0, I suppose. —Sander ten Brinke So let's sit back, open up a terminal, type in dotnet new podcast and we'll dive into the core of Modern .NET. What is your tech stack of choice these days? Have you tried the HOWL stack? Do you have front end clients that are bloated, have huge bundle sizes and have complicated tooling? Yeah you know like text displayed on a computer screen that has references to other text. Sound familiar? It should, the most popular way to view hypertext today is via the World Wide Web which is itself the canonical hypermedia system. Today we are joined by Carson Gross to discuss what Hypermedia systems are, concepts like Representational State Transfer (REST), Hypermedia As The Engine of Application State (HATEOS), and his library, HTMX, which is in direct response to how complicated web development has become. Carson has been the software industry for over 20 years and has his Masters of Computer Science from Stanford. I would love to hear you all talk about how the  novice reader can best reap the benefits of this almost-impossible book. (59:57-1:18:56) Jonathan: If you could go back and tell yourself one thing prior to first reading Ulysses to help you navigate the text, what would it be?

Entrevista realizada por Yasmín S. Michael Hibay has moved between huge companies with complex needs, and others that are just starting out. He says that some key lessons of API design are true for organizations of all sizes.Between September 2020 and April 2021, Michael was the Senior Engineering Manager at Capital One. He's now CTO of startup Vesti, a social network and chat app for investors. Michael believes that however big or small a company is, they should start designing APIs from the outside in. By that, he means design for the end user, and leave room for future additional complexity. This will save your developers time and effort creating APIs that ultimately don't serve a business-centric purpose, and limit the issues you encounter as you scale. On this episode of API Intersection, Michael talks about the pros and cons of hypermedia, why developers and the business side benefit from working together, and how to create a shared vocabulary that becomes the foundation of your organization's API design.Do you have a question you'd like answered, or a topic you want to see in a future episode? Erick J. We're back, starting with a short conversation with Tel Aviv based programmer and designer Ariel Malka, who develops experimental interactive projects. Next we hear TJB's audio performance, expressing the artist’s non-binary self as 40 droplets of water impacting a heated sheet of steel. Following that, we have our monthly conversation, which is about “Utopia,” the elusive and idyllic no-place of a happier and more just society. The idea of utopia has had many consequences throughout history, and much has been built and unbuilt around it. Participants in this conversation include a diverse group of researchers, artists and designers composed by Susana Delahante Matienzo (Cuban, based in Amsterdam), Giuliana Visco (based in Rome), and Ou Ning (based in China). Finally, our host Sylvain Souklaye chats with KMRU to introduce the work of Sarah Badr (FRKTL), whose new, untitled sound art piece closes the episode. This podcast series is produced by Sylvain Souklaye, with Dalida María Benfield and Chris Bratton. Ariel Malkahttp://ariel.chronotext.org/ TJB TJB, is a non-binary artist-philosopher whose work focuses upon the conception of the body, Being and the idea of a multiplicity of Self/s in performance. This work can be located within the framework of performance art and philosophical/phenomenological investigations that look to de/construct and challenge perception, alongside the assumed liminal barriers of body-based art. Xe is known for creating artworks that capture an altered space, environment, or period of time that regardless of scale, will often make intense, sometimes visceral, beautiful pieces that place the body in extremis. Living and working in the UK, TJB has been exhibiting work since 2001 and internationally since 2009 particularly through Europe and East coast USA. We start off discussion with the Drobo, BeyondRAID, how hard giving estimates is, ‘bad’ code and impostor syndrome. Following on from this is a brief history behind the Mozilla name and Netscape, along with how bullish Microsoft was in the 90’s. This leads us on to talk about TDD coding katas, the current state of testing in JavaScript and Android fragmentation. Finally, we finish up the show with Hypermedia endpoints (HAL), and epic Microsoft Office - El Capitan bugs.

Kerry and Rinat welcome guest Glenn Block to discuss hypermedia Web APIs, and the new book he co-authored on the subject. They get into some of the differences between systems that are designed to take advantage of the constraints of the REST architecture style, with those that are not. What is hypermedia? Should you always adhere to REST constraints and use hypermedia when building a Web API? What are some ways to implement these concepts on the client and server and how do they interact? What are some common implementation mistakes? API security? What can your book help me with? UCWA? And much more.

Historical Hypermedia: An alternative history of the Semantic Web and Web 2.0 and implications for e-research (Charles van den Heuvel)

UC Berkeley School of Information

According to the article on Hypermedia in Wikipedia, Ted Nelson coined the term in 1963 and published it in 1965. The definition in the article states that “hypermedia is used as a logical extension of the term hypertext in which graphics, audio, video, plain text and hyperlinks intertwine to create a generally non-linear medium of information” and the World Wide Web is presented as a classical example. But it can be argued that the characteristics of hypermedia and their use in global collaborations go back much further in time. At the beginning of the 20th century the Belgian pioneer of knowledge organization Paul Otlet (1868–1944) began exploring “substitutes for the book” and to find new technologies to order and to link fragments of texts, images, sound, etc., for scholarly collaborations on a global level. Otlet sketched and commissioned hundreds of drawings of what we would call nowadays interfaces to synthesize global knowledge. It will be argued that Paul Otlet’s views and visualizations on substitutes for the codex book, interfaces, infrastructures and protocols for collective annotating by scholars might be relevant for recent discussions on the provenance and evidence of information in Web 2.0 and Semantic Web solutions for e-research, in particular in the digital humanities.
