Today's podcast is with Eamonn Flanagan. Eamonn Flanagan is the Lead Strength & Conditioning Consultant at the Sport Ireland Institute, where he oversees strength and conditioning support for Ireland's Olympic and Paralympic athletes. He holds a Ph.D. in Sports Biomechanics and spent over a decade in professional rugby, working with the Scottish Rugby Union, Edinburgh Rugby, and the Irish Rugby Football Union. Eamonn appeared on episode #250 and has just created a new course on plyometrics in conjunction with Sportsmith Training methods such as extensive plyometrics and reactive strength testing have become more common in training team sports. At the same time, it's easy to lose sight of the whole in athlete development when chasing plyometric variables too far. On today's show, Eamonn explores the application of plyometric training, including the impact of surface type on performance, the Reactive Strength Index's role in assessment, and strategies for optimizing reactive strength. We also cover plyometric intensity, using extensive plyometric methods, and tailoring programs to individual needs, concluding with balanced approaches to training and performance. Around ego, you know, what do I want to do versus what do I need to do?" - Eamonn Flanigan (12:30 “An athlete might be on field multiple times a week, but if it's on a soft, you know, very, very compliant surface, I'm not sure how relevant that is to, let's say, what we might expect from adaptation from extensive plyometrics” - Eamonn Flanigan (13:40 “Let's say in the last Olympic cycle, working with a taekwondo athlete who is, you know, indoors on mats in bare feet. And so the difference in kind of foot, ankle, calf integrity between the two, you know, the taekwondo athletes spending a lot of time in single leg stance, you know, there's an athlete that I'm probably bypassing extensive work pretty quickly” - Eamonn Flanigan (30:00) “Very often like plyometric ability or that basic quality or reactive strength, it's, it's very neglected. I think sometimes it's not something that is often included. And as a result, I think there's, there's always some, I think there's often some easy wins there” - Eamonn Flanigan (37:00) “If you're doing repeat hurdle jumps or you're doing, you know, a set of pogo jumps or some bounding. There's also a point at which, you know, if you hit a bad replacement, you just end up like it gets worse and worse and worse. You know, I think, you know, again, varying within a set both up and down allows you to come back down again and build it back up again” - Eamonn Flanigan (41:10) “I am a little skeptical as to how much, you know, what might be less than 50 reps of an exercise in a week can have on, you know, the, the, the, the running gate of an athlete who's sprinting x number of strides ...

Carl Lewis and rugby punter Neal Hoogwerf preview and prediction every match of the new and imprioved Heineken Champions Cup this weekend. The 2022/23 Heineken Champions Cup is now just around the corner, with this season's groundbreaking competition preparing to kick off on Friday night. The addition of three South African clubs to the already elite mix of sides is set to make for an enthralling tournament, as 24 teams go head-to-head for the prestigious trophy. London Irish welcome Montpellier Hérault Rugby on Friday in the opening game of this season's Heineken Champions Cup, with kick-off in that Pool B encounter at 20:00 (UK & Irish time). Wing Ollie Hassell-Collins has been in scintillating form for Irish in the Gallagher Premiership and will be looking for a try on his Heineken Champions Cup debut, while fellow Englishman Zach Mercer is poised to be a key figure at No.8 for Montpellier ahead of his move to Gloucester Rugby next summer. On Saturday, the action gets underway at 13:00 as last season's finalists, Leinster Rugby, travel to Racing 92 in Pool A, with that game providing a fascinating match-up at fly-half where Ireland's Johnny Sexton, gunning for his fifth EPCR star with the Irish province, and Scotland's Finn Russell go head-to-head. At the same time, Cell C Sharks make their Heineken Champions Cup bow at home to Harlequins in Pool B. Quins centre André Esterhuizen returns to his former club, while Cell C Sharks fly-half Boeta Chamberlain will be one to keep an eye on given his kicking form in the United Rugby Championship (URC). DHL Stormers are the next South African side to debut, with their Pool B clash with ASM Clermont Auvergne at Stade Marcel-Michelin starting at 15:15. Clermont wing Damian Penaud, who starred in last season's competition, will face a stern test in the form of DHL Stormers counterpart Leolin Zas. Louis Rees-Zammit is another lightning wing likely to be involved as Gloucester Rugby mark their return to the Heineken Champions Cup at the same time. They host Union Bordeaux-Bègles in Pool A. Reigning champions Stade Rochelais entertain Northampton Saints in Pool B at 17:30. Lock Will Skelton, a monumental figure in La Rochelle's victory in the 2022 final, is set for a heavyweight clash with recent England debutant David Ribbans. Also at 17:30, the Heineken Champions Cup heads to Pretoria for the first time as Vodacom Bulls host last season's EPCR Challenge Cup winners, Lyon, in Pool A. Wing Kurt-Lee Arendse is one of a host of big South African names set for their Heineken Champions Cup debuts. Saturday's matches finish at 20:00, when 2020 winners Exeter Chiefs visit Castres Olympique in Pool A. No.8 Sam Simmonds, EPCR Player of the Year in 2020, is primed for another big campaign, while Castres wing Filipo Nakosi often catches the eye with his superb footwork. On Sunday, Sale Sharks face Ulster Rugby at AJ Bell Stadium, with that Pool B contest kicking off at 13:00. Two elite back-row forwards are set to do battle there in Sale's Tom Curry and Ulster's Nick Timoney. There is a repeat of last season's thrilling quarter-final at 15:15 in Pool B, when Munster Rugby host Stade Toulousain, with the Irish province look to exact revenge for that incredible place-kick competition defeat. Munster fly-half Joey Carbery comes into the game off the back of a superb display in the URC, but he is facing one of the best in the world in Toulouse playmaker Romain Ntamack. Three-time champions Saracens are also in action at 15:15, with Edinburgh Rugby heading to StoneX Stadium on their return to the competition. Saracens' England prop, Mako Vunipola, clashing with Edinburgh's Scotland international, WP Nel, in the front row could make for tasty viewing. Ospreys are at home to Leicester Tigers at 17:30 as what promises to be an exhilarating opening round concludes. Two British & Irish Lions scrum-halves could be on show in Swansea, in Ospreys' Rhys Webb and Leicester's Ben Youngs.

Ally represented Scotland 48 times during his career and also racked up 257 career club appearances, scoring 42 tries in total. We talk to Ally about getting started in rugby with Edinburgh, breaking into the Scotland team in 2004 at 21 years old, being considered for the Lions tour in 2005, falling out of favour with Andy Robinson as Scotland coach, and his move to England with Newcastle Falcons. We discuss a difficult beginning to his Falcons career, which resulted in relegation in 2012, followed by an immediate return to the Premiership under Dean Richards in 2013. Ally also talks about the Falcons fantastic run to the playoffs in 2018, in which he played a massive part with some very important tries. Finally we chat about the state rugby currently finds itself in, what a successful season would look like for Newcastle Falcons and a potential future career in coaching. The Flying Dutchman was also a Scotland International, amassing over 30 caps and also representing the Barbarians in a 2011 victory over England. Tim talks us through what it was like moving to the North East as a young, naive import from Holland. He also describes how Falcons coaches at the time thought he was a back row player, so in an alternate universe Tim Visser the try machine has been replaced by Tim Visser the speedy ball carrying number 8! We chat through his reasons for leaving Newcastle and heading for new pastures up North at Edinburgh, and his incredible try scoring record there. Tim also talks about his Barbarians experience and gives us one of the funniest stories you're likely to hear on this podcast, I won't spoil it just have a listen! We discuss Tim's decision to represent Scotland, his try scoring debut away at Fiji and a legendary home debut against the All Blacks where he also bagged himself a few tries. Finally we finish up with the move back to England with Harlequins, thoughts on the controversial 2016 Challenge Cup Final, and his decision to retire at a relatively young age. Cameron and Paul are joined by Scotland international and Edinburgh Rugby star Henry Prygos as we review our penultimate division, the AFC West.  We start with Henry and his Broncos as we wonder what the Broncos need to do to secure the best of the rest position as we're not sure there's any case for the Chiefs not winning it again. We look at Lock, the young wider receiver core as well as a dangerous running back committee. Henry also talks about the impacts of altitude and how significant it really is to play in.   It is then onto the Chargers, as we wonder what week Herbert needs to be up to speed and starting by for the Chargers to be that 2nd place contender. We talk about the dominant D and how important that is and wonder how this franchise can thrive in their new location and stadium.  We also focus in on the Raiders and Chiefs as we look at the opposite ends of the divisional talent scale. Cameron questions how many stars there are on the team, though we all agree that Carr is certainly capable, does he yet have the weapons for success? As for the Chiefs, we ask Henry what it's like to know you're up against Mahomes for the next 10 years potentially and we try to find a weakness in the Kansas City team. Make sure you follow us on twitter - @ScotlandNFL or Facebook - www.facebook.com/ScotlandNFL/ and share your thoughts on this episode.

In this episode I speak with strength and conditioning coach to Edinburgh Rugby, Ashley Jones. I first got to know Ashley through Tom Mclaughlin after we were discussing future guests for the podcast. Tom mentioned how open Ashley was with his programme and his methods, so had to get him on. Ashley is a great guy and although only 'booked in' for a 30 minute chat, we ended up talking shop for much longer, which was an absolute pleasure.    In this episode you will learn -    Who is Ashley Jones, his background, education and how he got to where he is today  How Ashley's practice has developed over the years  Incorporating strongman exercises into a rugby programme - how, when , if at all  Strength and conditioning for the amateur player  Off-season conditioning for rugby  Power training for team sports  Are Olympic lifts essential to a rugby programme  Testing for rugby and how this informs practice    Keep up to date with everything that is going on with the podcast by following me on Twitter @paceyperform or visiting paceyperformance.co.uk.    Enjoy  PP
