NASA has tried to get Extra Vehicular Activity Number Ninety underway since June 13th. The first attempt was thwarted by a space suit comfort issue, the second by a water leak that created a blizzard of ice inside the Quest airlock. Are the Shuttle-Era Extra Vehicular Mobility Units (EMU) or space suits finally showing their age? Also, what about Collins Aerospace and their recent withdrawal from their NASA contract to build the next generation of space suits for the ISS and the Artemis Lunar Program when they indicated back in February that all was going well? We discuss. On June 17th, the FAA held a virtual public hearing to receive comments concerning SpaceX's plans to use Launch Complex 39-A and NASA's Kennedy Space Center to support Starship Super Heavy Launches. We discuss what occurred during the session and the fallout from statements put into the record by both Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance. Talking Space continues our Boeing Space CST-100 Starliner Crewed Flight Test coverage. The team continues to examine the “Starliner is Stuck at the ISS” misconceptions and asks what NASA & Boeing Space could have done to alleviate such headlines. We also look at a detailed explanation posted on Twitter from Jim May, a Boeing Engineer who was part of the NASA-TV coverage, of why “Calypso” remains on the ISS. The basis of his discussion comes from the actual NASA flight certification plan. Heather Smith mentions the observations of a NASA flight director and his assessment of how Starliner performed during its first actual safe-haven exercise. All this and more in this edition of Talking Space! (Recorded July 5th, 2024) Host: Larry Herrin Panel Members: Gene Mikulka, Mark Ratterman, Heather Smith

Investor and climate activist Tom Steyer discusses his new book Cheaper, Faster, Better: How We'll Win the Climate War and why running for president is an excellent megaphone. And Joe Biden can't be that much like Abraham Lincoln even if he wanted to be, but the upcoming debate is a situation where he really shouldn't want to be. "Poetry is not instant coffee; that is undrinkable. What is slow brewed coffee or a tea ceremony? Everything is slow, which means you can appreciate the nuances of the sounds, the cadence of the language, the content of the poems. The good young poets and the good older poets are not very dissimilar. That's because the focus of these poets is grounded on the same things and measured on the same framework: originality of thought, width of creativity, good grammar and a cogent argument. These are the elements that make good writing." - Sudeep Sen, editor, 'Converse; Contemporary English Poetry by Indians' talks to Manjula Narayan about writing in English, poetry as a tough space, attempting to build a community of poets, and the effort that goes into putting together a good anthology.

In this month's Quantum Business Book Club I'm talking to you all about The Human Fabric by Bijoya Goswami. I decided to save this book for the later part of this season because of it's simplicity. Whereas we've been talking all about the strategies and complex interweavings of spirituality and business --Listen to past Quantum Business episodes for all of that-- this month we are back to the basics of who we are as humans. The Human Fabric is all about what motivates us and in this episode I'm taking you through the MRE Framework that Goswami outlines in this book. Dissimilar to any other personailty framework this one is so incredibly simple, but so very effective. Listen to this episode to understand what categories you fall in, and start to understand how yourself and others around you are motivated. The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is collaborating with Polish and Japanese researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology and Okayama University to develop an innovative technology called DISSIMILAR that uses artificial intelligence and data concealment techniques to help users tell whether a video is real or a deepfake. Social media nowadays is rife with the spread of fake news and misinformation, one of the most insidious forms of this being deepfakes. Deepfakes are videos which are edited in such a way, often with AI technology, to combine images, video footage, and audio to create a false or misleading videos. The DISSIMILAR project works to combat this. Professor David Megías, KISON's lead researcher and director of the IN3, said: “The project has two objectives: firstly, to provide content creators with tools to watermark their creations, thus making any modification easily detectable; and secondly, to offer social media users tools based on latest-generation signal processing and machine learning methods to detect fake digital content.” Currently there are two types of tools used to detect fake news – automatic, based on machine learning, and much more commonly, platforms using human moderators. Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter use human moderators and fact-checkers to tell whether content is real or fake, but that calls into question the danger of biases. This human solution could be affected by “different biases” and encourage censorship, according to David Megías, who said: “We believe that an objective assessment based on technological tools might be a better option, provided that users have the last word on deciding, on the basis of a pre-evaluation, whether they can trust certain content or not”. “That's why we've opted to explore the concealment of information (watermarks), digital content forensics analysis techniques (to a great extent based on signal processing) and, it goes without saying, machine learning”, he continued. Professor Megías explained that the fake news detection needed to be carried out with a combination of multiple different tools, both machine and human. The use of digital watermarking can be used to verify a media file “easily and automatically”. For example by confirming it had been distributed by a legitimate news industry or whether it had been posted from a brand new Twitter account. This too makes it so the user can easily tell if the content is fake. DISSIMILAR will combine the development of digital watermarks with digital forensics to detect irregularities and distortions produced when modifying a file, using machine learning models to improve outcomes. First-stage test studies are to take place in Catalonia, Poland, and Japan, with the researchers taking a holistic view on the perceptions and cultural components around spotting fake news. Professor Megías said: “Firstly, we want to find out how users interact with the news, what interests them, what media they consume, depending upon their interests, what they use as their basis to identify certain content as fake news and what they are prepared to do to check its truthfulness. If we can identify these things, it will make it easier for the technological tools we design to help prevent the propagation of fake news”. The perceptions will be gauged in different cultural contexts, splitting the user groups between Catalonia, Poland, and Japan. Andrea Rosales, a CNSC researcher, said:”This is important because, for example, each country has governments and/or public authorities with greater or lesser degrees of credibility”. “This has an impact on how news is followed and support for fake news: if I don't believe in the word of the authorities, why should I pay any attention to the news coming from these sources? This could be seen during the COVID-19 crisis: in countries in which there was less trust in the public authorities, there was less respect for suggestions and rules on the handling of the pand...

Third in our series (of 3 episodes) exploring the intersection of morality and public policy; generally of the form 'should X be made legal?'. We'll be exploring both the ethical arguments and some of the high level data around key policy decisions surrounding commonly banned substances and activities. A core introductory theme (and one that's consistently touched on through the series) is when and how a governing power should behave independent of morality, i.e. with a greater focus and interest in outcomes and evidence, and when the banning or legalizing of substances are perhaps more important as value statements than as policy approaches who's outcomes we should study. Ultimately, this a spectrum and we will all have different views on this, even from issue to issue. Today we consider the legality of gambling. Dissimilar to previous episodes, this is something that's is largely legal (though sports gambling is only recently permitted in the US). This means we can assess some of the impacts through studies and also that we consider the realistic efficacy of oversight bodies. In this case, the similar to the sex work, the moral imperative is protection of victims, but the victims are the purchasers rather than the sellers, and the particular difference on top of this is the awkward layering of the capitalist incentive to take advantage of those who gamble most - and are most addicted. Kenzo Fong is an experienced Silicon Valley tech executive. He helped build Google Maps and was an early member of Uber Eats. In these capacities, he dealt with globally distributed teams. Fong found it increasingly frustrating that he had to juggle different incompatible platforms. These different tools aren't linked to one another. This causes workers to waste a lot of time and energy, frustratingly toggling to various platforms and apps throughout the business day. He says that although many of the products are great, there is redundancy and not much of a major difference between Trello, Asana and other project management tools. To remedy this situation and make it easier for workers to connect and collaborate, Fong, who often works out of his van, set out on his own to found Rock. The platform is a distributed work company that enables anyone to work from anywhere. Rock was created to work both synchronously and asynchronously. Rather than productivity tools that don't work together and actually fragment the workflow, he's developed an all-in-one platform to reduce anxiety and put everyone on the same page. With Rock, employees from across the world can seamlessly interact via messaging, task creation and integrated video calls. Dissimilar to softwares that not-so-subtly pressure you to always be on call, there are no annoying “pings” late at night. They often create the expectation that we need to be available at all hours of the day. Fong is not a big fan of technology that makes you focus on presentism and face time, instead of doing the actual work that needs to get done. It's an all-in-one affordable productivity platform for distributed work that combines messaging, tasks, notes, and files in one simple tool that anyone can use. You can start with a free option.

The disintegration of civilization is caused by the deterioration of what British historian Arnold Toynbee called the CREATIVE MINORITY. The church is the creative minority, as well as a moral minority. It must swim upstream and go against the grain. Then—and only then—can it catalyze revivals, reformations, and renaissances. The key to this creative minority? Unity in diversity. That is what results in spiritual maturity. That is what nets this BELOVED COMMUNITY we call the church. In the words of NCCer David Grizzle, “Unity among DISSIMILAR people serves the purpose of being INDISPUTABLE PROOF that God is in the house!” Let's not settle for the façade of UNIFORMITY. Let's strive for biblical unity!

Proverbs In 365 Devotions For more go to braggingonjesus.com Proverbs 20:11 Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright. Watching Your Child Make Themselves Known R Aylor Oh, our children… how precious a gift… how disruptive to our life… And the thing is… they are all born with differences… in looks yes except for identical twins… but also differences in personalities… They are sooo unique! Dissimilar in strengths and weaknesses… not only in the physical but mental traits as well and how they think things through… not better or worse but different. The imprint of these characteristics and attributes can play a major role in what our children will be suited for in life as well as the kinds of things they will enjoy or detest. So those things are important… and yet they may change depending on how they are brought up and what they associate themselves with in life… This can be a good thing or a horrible thing. Something else to add into the equation: We are all born broken into a broken world. What does that bring to the makeup of our life? Well, we are born with a bent towards sin… And more specific, we are born with varied predispositions that are stronger than others. Certain things begin to pull at our children’s heart strings and for watching parents who ask the Lord for discerning eyes they can see. Some traits from our brokenness you may notice in your child at an early age could include a learning disability associated with the physical body or they may have difficulty with social skills. Hyperactivity is another. We are born with many physical brokennesses which always have some potential to pull us towards sin in some way. Some physical problems can be overcome by physical things like doctors and medicines but others require the great physician. Some things a parent can watch for in their child early on are things like patterns of lying or bullying. A screamer… a stealer… a hitter… or one who harms themselves. Watch for an early pulls towards sexuality to the opposite or same gender. Watch for a child who always runs away and hides from conflict. I think some of these things hit children across the board but the longer any of them are a routine… or pattern it is more likely that piece of brokenness will hard set itself deep within them. Remember I said how we are not bound to all the dispositions we were born with? We become like the things that we soak up from our associations… What we hear and the examples we see. It doesn’t always soak in… But if the child does not veil the good associations out it will. So good parents can fight against the brokenness by teaching the truth of Gods word like how Jesus is eternally more satisfying than the perversions of sin… He is the greatest treasure in the Universe. The truth is that seeing the beauty of Jesus is what transforms us first as a new creation and then seeing more of his beauty continues the transformation progress. 2nd Corinthians 3:18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. So yes, we are not bound to our brokenness. And do we as parents hold any responsibility? Of course we do. As our children make themselves known by their acts… whether good or bad as our text indicates… We show them the good truth in Gods word of how he fixes our brokenness. Pray

If there is one over-riding theme from the recently released Evaluation of Corporate Compliance programs it is that a corporate compliance program must be operationalized. Indeed that is the theme of this month’s series of podcasts. Another way to think about operationalization is the connectedness of compliance throughout an organization. In an article from the Harvard Business Review (HBR), entitled “How Smart, Connected Products are Transforming Companies”, by Michael E. Porter and James E. Heppelmann, focused on the new products. It provided some interesting insights into both the interconnectedness of processes and structures, which apply to the compliance practitioner going forward. I call it “connected compliance.” It provides another mechanism for you to consider in operationalizing your compliance program. Process in Connected Compliance Processes are being reshaped by the data which is now available and more “intense coordination among [corporate] functions is now required.” Regarding structures, the authors believe, “new forms of cross-functional collaboration and entirely new functions are emerging.” Obviously compliance is a business process. Yet it should also be a continuous process. The data from a wide variety of sources should be used to track the types of risk that compliance professionals must manage. This begins with third parties. Continuous monitoring of third party watch lists seems almost pedestrian now yet many companies do not understand they have a continuing obligation to understand who they are doing business with, even after the contract is signed. Put simply, due diligence once every two years is a recipe for trouble. But this type of information should not only be limited to third parties’ in your sales business. You should also consider your exposure from your customers. However, what if a large part of your company is exposed to the financial risk of a corrupt company slowing down its business? If you are in the auto supply business or even the software industry, have you considered how much of your business is at risk through your relationship with a company like Volkswagen (VW)? Most Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) risk analysis considers corruption risks involving third parties in the sales arena or vendors that come in through the Supply Chain, now, based upon the VW, Petrobras or you name the scandal, you may need to know the corruption propensity of your customers as well. Finally, connected compliance will help make people, materials, energy, plant and equipment far more productive, and the repercussions for business processes will be felt throughout the economy. The authors’ state, “We will see a whole new era of “lean.” Data flowing to and from products will allow product use and activities across the value chain to be streamlined in countless new ways.” For the compliance practitioner, waste will be cut or eliminated. Connected compliance will also allow a compliance solution to be delivered when certain thresholds are met, rather than according to a schedule. New data analytics will lead to previously unattainable efficiency improvements and allow you to do more business in compliance going forward. Structures in Connected Compliance Just as processes have evolved in connected compliance, so do structures. The classical organizational approach combines “two basic elements: differentiation and integration. Dissimilar tasks, such as sales and engineering, need to be “differentiated,” or organized into distinct units. At the same time, the activities of those separate units need to be “integrated” to coordinate and align them.” Connected compliance will have a major impact on both differentiation and integration in your company going forward. This structural changes means that compliance will be integrated into diverse functional units of the company such as manufacturing, logistics and SC, sales and finance. This integration across functional units will occur through the business unit leadership team and through the design of formal processes for connected compliance with multiple units having roles. This sounds quite like operationalizing compliance, exactly as specified by the DOJ in the Evaluation document. However connected compliance gives you the means and methods to think through how to accomplish this goal. You will have to coordinate between and across multiple functions within your organization. It will require the critical function of not only data management but also data analysis. What does it all mean? Such an approach will require “dedicated data groups that consolidate data collection, aggregation, and analytics, and are responsible for making data and insights available across functions and business units.” Once again the compliance function is uniquely situated to be at the fulcrum of this connectedness. But more importantly, you already have this information inside your organization but most usually the compliance function does not have visibility into the data. Compliance must find the tools and processes to cut through the siloed nature of corporate information. It is through connected compliance that all groups within a company will become responsible for compliance. The integration of this data into compliance is still viewed as cutting edge; nonetheless companies have this data, structured within their own ERP systems. Connected compliance will allow senior management to view information to make the business more efficient and allow a company to take more risk because the risks will be managed more effectively. Three Key Takeaways Connected compliance is the inter-relatedness of interconnectedness of compliance processes and structures. Compliance should be ongoing and a continuous process. Compliance must use data analytics tools to cut through the siloed nature of corporate data. This month’s podcast series is sponsored by Oversight Systems, Inc. Prefixes are key morphemes in English vocabulary that begin words. A large number of English vocabulary words contain the prefix dis-, which means “apart.” Examples using this prefix include distant, disease, and disqualify. An easy way to remember that the prefix dis- means “apart” is through the word disorder, for items which are disordered are “apart” from being “ordered,” hence are not ordered or are in quite the mess.Like this? Cyberbullying is the act of directing threatening or disparaging information at a target child using Information and Communications Technology. Cyberbullying is harmful, repeated and hostile behavior intended to taunt, embarrass, deprecate & defame a targeted child. Dissimilar to classic bullying, cyberbullying includes Cyberbullying by proxy, which is when a cyberbully encourages or persuades others to engage in deprecating and harassing a target child. www.iPredator.co. As author of the Information Age Forensics construct, iPredator, and internet safety website, www.iPredator.co, Dr. Nuccitelli discusses why some children are prone to cyberbullying and why some cyberbullies grow into adult iPredators.
