He advises people to check their current omega 3 to see if it is an inferior cheaper form of omega 3 called ethyl ester (EE) by squeezing the contents into a Styrofoam cup and if the cup rots away in 10 minutes this means it has ethanol in the fish oil. I feel like I could go heavier on some moves if my grip strength/forearms quit giving out before the muscle being worked. 47:50 -Finishing a 7 month build / maintenance phase where I have reversed and finally got calories up to where they should be after over a decade of severe caloric restriction. I run ultramarathons (50 - 100 miles), so I run 4-5 days/week and spend a lot of time running in the mountains. I do full body strength workouts 3 days/week because I have aesthetic and overall fitness goals as well. Now for my question - why is it that I can back squat significantly more than I can deadlift? I know deadlifts are supposed to be a heavier lift for most people, and in my CrossFit days (3 years ago or so) I could deadlift well over 200lbs. However, now I can barely deadlift 155lbs for 4 reps. I can squat 165lbs for 8+ reps. I've been trying to add more glute bridges and hip presses, but they don't seem to be helping. Is this concerning? What should I do? 13:00 - I'm a 22 years old, 5'7 female, been in a gaining phase for the last 2 months (only been lifting intelligently for probably about 6 months though, so pretty new to this). Started the gain at 147 lbs (wasn't super lean when i started, but really felt like I needed to build some muscle/strength and focus on gaining energy/regulating hormones/etc through upping calories), and have gained about 7-8 lbs in 2 months. Have seen a ton of strength gains through focus on progressive overload, and can visibly see muscle growth as well. Planning to gain for one more month. Here is my question: What do I do post-gain phase? I have my wedding in September that I want to cut for. That gives me April-August. 5 months to cut. I reached maintenance with a coach about 6 months ago and have remained there since. I have noticed a trend that I have been slowly starting to gain weight (scale number) and also have physique changes (less toned/ losing definition). My workout routine has changed since finding maintenance, by doing more lifting and less cardio. With being a girl I get nervous when the number of the scale goes up but I don't want to get in the negative head space and panic when it could be normal or good for me. Have gained 2 lbs in about a month and a half without trying if that makes sense. Only macro change in the time frame has been increased protein (130 to 145g) about 2 weeks ago. I'm lean for my height (128 lbs 5' 10), biofeedback is good, hormones are good. 12:20 - Hey Cody, I have a question for your podcast and would love your expertise. I have a new client with a goal to lose fat. She is 175 lbs looking to get down to 165. She trains 45 minutes of cardio and 30 min of weight training 3x per week...in the past she's consumed 1500-1600 calories in an attempt to lose the weight. In my calculations this intake isn't really enough even with the goal of fat loss. I have suggested she consume 1800 daily with a 35/25/40 split P/C/F (as suggested by PN for an endomorphic body type). She is really nervous about the calorie increase...am I wrong to start her here? I figured it best to start at a base and remove as needed during the process. If I'm wrong I would love to know and my suggestion is right I would love to be able to better explain to her how more calories will help her lose weight. I have explained she likely caused a bit of a metabolic adaptation from under consuming in the past. Started reverse nov 19. have increased up to maintenance. But in the most recent dexa scan I was the same weight but 21% body fat with less muscle. So now I'm stuck not knowing if I should cut again or just change up weight training at maintenance calories.  36:30 - Hey Cody, I've got a quick one I think would help some of your listeners as well as reassure me I'm doing the right thing with a current 40 year old female client I'm working with.  In the last 24 weeks she has gone from 235 lbs down to 205 lbs with some definite recomp (added lean tissue). Progress has been steady with a 4-5 day refeed each month. Stress is at bay, sleep is quality, energy is ok, hunger is moderate (hasn't increased too much yet to where it's unbearable but definitely increasing slowly), and strength is still increasing.  Now the question:With bio-feedback still positive, would you push another 12 weeks of a deficit, or take an insurance policy to come back up around maintenance for a min? I just don't want to risk running her into the ground and wanted an opinion from someone I trust. It is circuit training but it does focus on hypertrophy & progressive overload. But I was wondering about the split. Is every muscle worked enough to really build muscle? I love the program, I look forward to doing the workouts and I know that's important as well but of course I want to also get some results. Oh, I should mention I workout from home. I have a decent amount of weights, a barbell etc... but I am also limited, e.g. I do not have the room for a squat rack. So I will never be able to go up as high in weight as I would in a gym that has a rack. Cable machines are being replaced with resistance bands, which is great but I can't possibly know if I'm doing a lat pulldown for example with a band how much weight I am pulling and to progressively overload from there. Am I wasting my time to get the results I want (“lean out”, build muscle)? 18:45 - I have been in a strength gaining phase for the past 2 months. I have seen some good gains but I am getting a little uncomfortable weight wise and would like to do a mini cut. For reference I am a 5'7” female, and doing carb cycling as I've found it works best with my hunger levels and PCOS. On my leg days my macros are 150p, 235c and 70f (3 days/wk) . On the rest of the days I'm at 150p, 180c and 80f. At the end of my cut 3 months ago I was 142 but am currently 148 so I think my weight has increased too quickly. Would 150p, 145c and 70f be acceptable for like 4ish weeks to cut back down? would i then reverse back up or jump straight to my new maintenance after cutting down some? 29:10 - How can I even out my body? Mostly when I lift them over my head. Happens a lot when I'm lifting or  doing push-ups and even when I'm just doing everyday activities. It does not cause any pain, it's just gross and annoying (it's loud enough for people working out next to me to hear). Any ideas as to why this happens or what I can do to stop it.? 10:00 - I'm currently ready for an 8-10 week fat loss phase and have been at maintenance (eating 1850-2150 calories) for the last 4 months. During this time my split was two upper three lower days and am currently doing no cardio. I'm wondering how many calories you would suggest I cut to start if my goal is only to lose about 5 lbs. My new workout split will be 2 upper, 2 lower, 1 HIIT, and 1 LISS day. 21:50 - I just listened to your podcast #372 about how stress impacts the body and it really hit home. I began dieting and working out about 3 years ago for weight loss. What started out as healthy balanced eating gradually turned into increasing restriction and cutting which eventually led to eating about 1200 calories a day for an extended period of time. I also increased the amount of time working out. Eventually I started half marathon training and increased calories some but was still sticking to an extremely high protein low carb low fat diet. For about 5 months recently I began eating more “normal”. However it wasn't super consistent and mostly consisted of a lot of cutting for a few days and then a lot of eating. During that time I gained about 15 or so pounds back(I initially lost 40 pounds) and now cannot lose it no matter what I do. I am currently consuming max 1600 calories a day and counting macros. 140P 160C 44F. I run distance(5-8 miles) several days a week and also do Orange theory fitness. I'm concerned the inability to lose weight comes from too much cardio and three years of a caloric deficit. I followed your advice on where to go with my macros during this reverse, and my current macros are set at 130 protein, 180 carbs, 50 fat. My problem is most days I go over on protein and under on carbs, i know 130P is already on the higher end of what I need, so I guess my question is it a problem for me to hit more like 160C and 150P? I know it won't be more beneficial, I just really like eating protein more than carbs. Part of this is because carbs usually tend to trigger binges for me, whereas protein does not. I don't eat red meat and I'm getting plenty of fiber as I eat a ton of veggies each day. just wondering if this is okay or if i should try and find more carbs that i can tolerate without eating the whole house! Thank you as always! 20:35 - Any deadlifting and squatting tips/cues for people with long legs? I am fairly new to deadlifting and I feel like I have to bend so far down to pick the bar off the ground, and when squatting sometimes I feel like a newborn baby giraffe! 25:20 - I apologize in advance if this drags, but I want to give you the full picture. I started my fitness journey 2 1/2 years ago by joining a local bootcamp and started working out 5-6 days a week, mostly a combo of HIIT and weights. I had already been tracking my food (not macros), just managing calories and started eating cleaner and upped my protein. Saw some results as far as increased energy and strength, but nothing huge. Definitely formed some good habits. Fast forward to January 2019 when I started tracking macros. I did some research online and filled out like 5 free macro calculators and used the numbers I thought fit best. I started a cut and definitely saw results. I upped my calories by a few hundred because I had super low energy and continued my cut for 8-12 weeks. It was the first time in my life (at 40 years old after 2 babies) that I saw any semblance of abs and muscle definition. I reversed up to maintenance throughout March/April and stayed around 1700 calories (I'm petite at 5'2” and at the time, about 110-112). I stayed a maintenance until 3 weeks ago. I started a cut (which I had planned to do, but not until Spring) to lean out a bit. I had put on a little extra holiday weight (was up to 120) and want to get lean again before summer. My question is, going forward, should I continue to cut for 8 weeks and then reverse to maintenance? Should I do re-feed day(s) or diet breaks? I've been listening to your podcast and am loving all the info, but am a bit overwhelmed. So many things to consider in this whole process! I know it's better to just do it and adjust as necessary, but I'd like to be smart about it. Besides continuing with bootcamp, I've just started weight training at home, although with limited equipment at the moment. Slowly starting to build a home gym. I don't want to just get lean, I also want to build muscle. I'm not training for anything in particular, just enjoying being healthy and liking seeing the positive change in my body. Thanks for all the great info you put out there! I'm definitely learning a lot! 35:45 - What advice do you have for clients going through a stressful time and don't have their usual appetite? I'm in the middle of a launch and last thing on my mind is food and having a difficult time eating sometimes but I know I need to eat to grow. 39:55 - Can you do a mini cut during a recovery diet if you're doing it from a long term benefit point of view? Completely selfish question. Been doing a reverse and had horrible biofeedback, so went to a recovery diet. Went from 47kg to 69kg at 5'3. Biofeedback still isn't great, much better than it was. 45:40 - Would love to know where you would start when training an advanced age individual. 70+. This individual is an ex pro baseball player. Used to be extremely fit. Hasn't done much over the last decade+ though. He has expressed his desire to jump again and do a push up. He can perform squats with out assistance but has lost the connection on being able to jump. I'm guessing they was too low as I'm eating a ton more food now after an 8 week cut in the summer. I went from 114lbs down to 110lbs. I ended my cut on 1350 cals. I've been reversing for 9 weeks now and have gotten my calories to 1750. 130p 50f 195c. I am 5'2 and the scale has gone down I'm now 108, 109 when in my cycle. (Retaining water) I have noticed my neat is now pretty high. I just seem to have a lot more energy. Sleep and mood is ok. Performance is great. Should I keep upping my cals? I'm shocked that I've hit 1750 with no gain. Before the summer I imagine I was averaging 1,400 cal a day. This is just an estimate as I was not tracking. I would say I am eating at least 80g more carbs. So how is someone as small as I am able to eat this much without gaining a single pound? 12:04 - I have been slowly catching up on all the old podcast episodes as I listen to the new ones within hours of them coming out, and a few times I've heard you say that the 1 g of protein per pound of body weight may not apply to smaller females. I am currently in the middle of a reverse diet eating around 1500 cal and going to bump up more soon. I am 5'3 and weigh about 110 lbs. I have my current protein goal said at 115 g per day, is this too low? would i benefit more from a higher protein lower carb split? most of my carbs are coming from vegetables and fruits and one serving of oatmeal a day but I also really enjoy eating protein. current macros at 115 protein 170 carb 40 fat. is this too little protein? 17:00 - Okay, So my details are 5 9” , 130-135 lbs ( don't have much access to scale) 266C 62F 123P , Workout - 4-5 days upper/lower 2x with full body on 5th day -job preschool teacher so on my feet a good bit. Goal: stay in a maintenance keep my physique or get more muscle. Overall be healthy. Love to workout Now to the question. I reversed with a coach over the summer but had to stop due to the cost. I got to this maintenance and was super pleased. Even lost fat through the process and have the most muscle definition I have ever had in my life. But family members are telling I look too lean and are nervous it will effect me having kids later on. I know it's hard without seeing me or knowing body fat % but I don't know what to do next?! I haven't seen a doctor and it cause me to over eat and then make up with under eating on other days (robbing Peter thing). It has worked but I feel stuck and would love your advice on situation. 25:19 - I have EDS and all my joints are extremely hypermobile so my balance and stability are terrible and they pop out of place a lot. Building muscle is crucial for long term as the muscles can support the joints where tendons and ligaments can not. However because of the joint issues it's hard for me to lift heavy and also lots of volume - volume can lead to intense joint pain and too heavy my joints come out of place. I've been lifting for a few years now and I am at a loss of how to progress. The condition affects collagen so all of my body is affected and I definitely build muscle slower anyway (in addition to the joint issues). We've been training for a while and he's lost over 80 pounds mostly through calorie deficit increased activity in the gym and also he walks on the treadmill. We've about reached his goal weight and I want to start upping his calories so that he can be at a more manageable maintenance as opposed to the aggressive deficit he used to lose the weight, but we only strength train two times per week for an hour, and not very intensely because of his age and limitations. My current goal is to add some more muscle mass. I am a personal trainer with a good amount of training experience.  Currently I am consuming 2670 kcals per day. 180g protein, 321g carbs, 74g fat. I am training 4 days per week with the current split- day 1- back/ quads. Day 2- shoulders/tris day3- off. Day 4- chest/glutes/hamstrings. Day 5- shoulders/back/bis. Day 6&7 off.  Do you think this plan is in accordance to my goal of gaining size? Thanks 16:30 - I hired a macro coach that set me at 1335 cals for 8 weeks, while working out with weights 6 days a week for 30-40 mins. I went from 137lbs at the start on Monday to 134 Wednesday that week. Over the next 5 weeks I went down to 129. This was rather lean for me at 5'6”.  I was tired but wired, sleeping less and less each week. By the end of 5 wks I had double pneumonia and mono....I was done. I had to stop working out and dieting for about 3-4 wks. Once I started to feel better I went back to dieting and exercising. I lost my cycle, started seeing acne and began losing a lot of hair. I also started binging, and subsequently became 33% of the 95% that regain weight, plus. My cycle has come back and the hair loss is slowing down, I believe due to the overall weekly calories being so high with the binges. I'm floating between 140-144lbs— this is not where I want to be.  My plan is to diligently monitor myself at 1950 for 2 weeks to see where I'm at for maintenance. Im starting at 1950 as a mid between the calculations you mentioned. Hopefully this ends the binges. Once I have good data Then I want to toggle between a small deficit and maintenance for a month and then re adjust depending on the situation. In your experience how long does it usually take for this to even out, I know everyone is different, but on average? Should I go longer at a “maintenance”to make sure every gets back to good for a while? 26:30 - What advice would you give to someone who (up until recently) worked an active job in retail who later transitioned into a sedentary desk job? Still trying to get 10k steps a day, track macros and lift weights 5-6x a week.  How can someone prevent gaining a ton of weight when it's inevitable that you'll be less active than before? 28:55 - What advice do you give to petite and short females for tracking macros during a cut? (I have been impressively consistent in the last 12 weeks on ~1450 calories 150C/140P/30F, losing less than half a pound each week, if at all. I am 5'2 and 130-132lbs. I feel like 1400 is so low but I also think I can go lower if needed. What is your opinion on fat loss and cutting for small females?) 34:00 - What would surprise us from your workout playlist? 38:40 - My question is would you ever consider supplementing your little girls diet with creatine? 41:45 -I'm dealing with a knee injury currently & want to focus on specifically building up my arms & shoulders while I let the knee heal up. I don't want to lose too much strength in my chest & back during this time though. My current lifting window is small, so I've been doing a lot of compound movements up to this point. What would be the best approach to hit the arms for some size? Do you have a program specifically for this already? 47:45 - If we can reverse up to create a new maintenance for ourselves, could we technically diet down to create a lower set point, and therefore be able to create a surplus easier and then boom put on muscle while eating less food? 51:45 - If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be? Since increasing my macros and adjusting my training, I am now sitting around 102-103. The goal is to get me up to around 110 so that I can cut at a healthy weight and get my calories high enough to do so with the goal of ultimately competing in a bikini show in the spring of 2020. 110 seems like a lot of weight! What are your thoughts on this? 8:40 - I have been counting macros for a little over a year and love it. It has brought me so much freedom and enjoyment to my fitness journey. I am very very active I spin quite a few days a week and strength train several days as well. I weigh about 108-110 and am 5'4. My question would be in regards to daily calorie intake I currently intake about 1500-1650 and my macros are roughly 45% protein 30% carb and 25% fat? Does this sound good for maintenance or should I increase? Which macro would be the best to increase? 13:55 - Can you discuss a natural lifters genetic potential for gaining muscle? 19:15. -What's your take on carb cycling. Generally speaking. Is there any real validity to it for women who aren't working towards anything specific. Just fat loss and more muscle tone.  26:35. - Best advice for tips on trying to lift heavy without having a spotter. Trying to push the last few reps while lifting solo in the gym gets difficult with certain lifts like squats & bench. I feel like I have 2-3 more in the tank, but I have to back off vs getting stuck in the hole. 29:20 - When you go to maintenance from a deficit do you ease into it like a reverse diet? I started from 1500 cal and have worked up to 1750 cal, and now recently my bodyweight has increased by 0.7-1kg in two weeks. (I added 50 cal every week and carbs have gone from 140-150 to 200-220g). I haven't noticed any unusual fat gains/water retention. Should I Stop adding calories and make this my new maintenance or is this normal and I should go on with my reverse diet? I am not really happy that my cal intake is this low, but I need to be in the weight class in powerlifting comps. I am just worried that I start maintenance too soon… few stats about me; 5'2” and 114.5kg (went down from 130lbs to 112lbs), training 4x a week and have increased training volume and intensity with the reverse diet.   47:15 - Since February I have been weightlifting and have lost about 30lbs. I am down to about 114 lbs and 5'3 and thought that this would be my goal (below it even) but i still have some stomach fat and other fat i would like to lose. I am burnt out of being in fat loss and am dying to get calories up so i can gain strength in the gym. I feel my newbie gains are slowing down and it's getting harder to get stronger, and I'm really excited to move on to getting stronger at maintenance. I'm eating about 1400 right now and walk 20k steps a day (student) and my losing has slowed to about .6 lb average a week. should I keep at it for a while longer to try and lose the stomach fat? or start reversing our? thank you in advance for the advice!!   50:50 - I follow your page and I loved macros when I started them. I started seeing results and was consistently losing about a pound a week, it was motivation to keep going, I'm the type of person who dives in head first to what I do. However, I suddenly stopped losing weight and even started gaining. I was still super compliant with my macros and my weights. I was irregular so my first thought was fiber, maybe my cut in carbs caused insufficient fiber. Well I upped my carbs but I'm still below maintenance, became more regular but I'm still gaining weight.
