Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.Dave's Affiliate Link - Support our show by clicking the link belowUS Audible LinkCanadian Audible LinkUK Audible LinkSupport the show!...
In this episode, Alex announces an exciting referral program for his production company Epics Productions, where for every successful referral that results in a new podcast with Epics, the referrer will receive $500. The focus of the podcast remains on sharing stories and promoting understanding between people, and the guest for the week is Dr. Janelle Jones, a Ted X speaker, life coach, author, and therapist who overcame poverty, violence, and teenage motherhood to achieve success. Dr. Janelle Jones is a clinical therapist, author, and entrepreneur. She was born into poverty and raised in the projects of Columbus, Ohio, where she lost her father and sister to intercity violence as a child. Despite these challenges, Janelle was determined to live a life different than the one she saw playing out around her. She founded her own company, Melon and Grace Publishing, and created the Mahogany Beautiful Bright Me program to help girls with self-love and self-acceptance. Janelle is also the host of the Girl You Got This podcast, where she empowers women to live their dreams. Janelle's journey includes overcoming barriers to become the first-generation high school graduate on route to earning her master's degree, writing several books, and starting many businesses to support and empower women. Her story is one of resilience, determination, and hope. Dr. Janelle Jones shares her experience of teen pregnancy and overcoming barriers to become a successful entrepreneur and advocate for women's empowerment. They will also learn about Janelle's background, personal journey of self-discovery, and her work in helping women identify their passions and expertise. The episode covers various topics such as childhood experiences, societal norms, breaking generational cycles, and the importance of sharing personal stories to help others. The listener will also be provided with links to Janelle's work and encouraged to support her. I started this podcast because I believe that the foundation of hate and discrimination in our world comes from a lack of understanding of those who are different from ourselves. We plan to combat that by hearing everyone's stories, that we can better understand them, be a part of creating real positive change.

In the summer of 2020, AphroChic spoke with Janelle Jones on Instagram Live about Black Women's Equal Pay Day, economics, and racial inequality. Janelle is the first African American woman to serve as chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor and is currently the chief economist for Service Employees International Union. Here we present the edited conversation from two years ago in honor of Black Women's Equal Pay Day 2022, which takes place this year on September 21st. Black women are paid 58 cents for every dollar paid to white men and this day symbolically denotes how far into the year Black women must work to be paid what men were paid the previous year. Janelle's article, "We Are The Economy: Building from the Ashes of COVID-19" is featured in Issue No. 4 of AphroChic Magazine.
Raise the minimum wage. Revisiting some of the conversations we have had about raising the minimum wage. David Cooper Progressive Democrats have made raising the minimum wage a priority for the new administration. And for a good reason. David Cooper says a $15 minimum wage would lift pay for tens of millions of workers and help reverse decades of growing pay inequality. Janelle Jones Economic analyst Janelle Jones says a higher minimum wage is a crucial tool in bridging our nation's widening income inequality gap And in the face of federal inaction, cities and states are setting up to the plate. Jim Hightower Whip Inflation Now! Republican politicos are all over Joe Biden for failing to stop inflation. Perhaps you wonder, though, what these squawkers would do if they were in charge? No need to wonder – just look back to 1974, when Americans were being pummeled by price spikes that topped 12%, nearly double what we're enduring today. But by Gollies, President Gerald Ford and his Republican contingent in Congress met the challenge head-on with a new magical program of economic uplift they called WIN – Whip Inflation Now! Bill Press Trump's Washington and The Price Of Submission Mark Leibovich is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller This Town. His new book, Thank You for Your Servitude, DONALD TRUMP'S WASHINGTON AND THE PRICE OF SUBMISSION is the eyewitness account of how the GOP collaborated with Donald Trump to transform Washington's “swamp” into a gold-plated hot tub—and a onetime party of rugged individualists into a sycophantic personality cult. A long time New York Times writer, he is now at the Atlantic, in part, he says, because he can use profanity there. If you'd like to hear the entire episode, visit BillPressPods.com.
A minimum and maximum wage. The minimum wage often stands in for a variety of different workers-rights issues in political debates. This week we dig into how minimum wage laws can function as part of a broader social agenda—and study their direct, and incredibly intriguing opposite. Janelle Jones Economic analyst Janelle Jones says a higher minimum wage is a crucial tool in bridging our nation's widening income inequality gap And in the face of federal inaction, cities and states are setting up to the plate. Sam Pizzigati Income inequality in America is now at a rate we haven't seen in close to 100 years. In a new book, author Sam Pizzigati says it's time to resurrect an idea once endorsed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt … a maximum wage for our nation's highest earners. Jim Hightower A Rube Goldberg Inflationary Spiral Last July, several GOP senators combined their 5-watt intellects to charge that inflation was rising because of the “insane tax and spending spree of President Biden and the Democrats.” Never mind that the “insane” spending is for such sensible, productive, and enormously popular national needs as childcare and jobless benefits, Mitch McConnell's rabidly partisan flock saw the chance to politicize the public's legitimate worries about rising prices. Bill Press To Stop Gun Violence, Elect Democrats. With the tragic massacre of children and teachers in Uvalde, Texas dominating the news, we talked to Igor Volsky of Guns Down America about what can be done, if anything, to combat gun violence and the politicians who support it. But our gun laws cannot change unless our politicians do, so Bill also talked to two sharp political reporters about the 2022 primaries: Niall Stanage, White House Columnist for The Hill and Political Analyst at News Nation AM and Maya King, Politics Reporter for the New York Times covering the South based in Georgia. Duluth Mayor Emily Larson and Lake County Chamber of Commerce President Janelle Jones join the podcast to talk about the municipal support that's required for Grandma's Marathon each and every year.Mayor Larson and her city staff are integral to the success of Grandma's Marathon weekend, and the planning for each race is truly a year-round process. The city devotes resources, time, energy, and money to the race and has been one of its strongest supporters since the start in 1977.Jones, meanwhile, is part of the extraordinary start line just outside of Two Harbors. That area has been vital to Grandma's Marathon weekend since the beginning, and the transformation of that area, headed by efforts of the Chamber of Commerce, is always a mini-miracle on race weekend.

But for others, the hard-knocks just keep coming. Before Covid, women were kickin’ ass and takin’ names. We were building successful businesses. We were helping to elevate one another by creating work infrastructures that made sense for the unique challenges we know all women face. We were on top of the world! Then...Then a pandemic threw everything off course. As tired as that’s made us, as much as we’d love to just throw in the towel, we know that we’re far too resilient for that. In today’s episode, Karlee reveals startling statistics about the productivity of women pre-covid, and how those spectacular gains have been lost as the pandemic continues to derail women, and particularly women of color, around the world. She points out the unique pressures women face juggling our work and home lives, and offers inspiration from past generations of women that’ll help you find the strength you need to keep going. She’ll also provide actionable ways that you can help women rise up again, thereby acknowledging your personal power to uplift. We know we’ll bounce back. But we also know that surviving the setbacks can be made a little easier when we’ve got each other's backs. The success of women depends on the success of women. We know how to use our power and resources to elevate others. We understand that when women are at the top, we look out for the long-term health and stability of our communities. As we ride these rough seas together, it’s important to remember our tribal roots: helping others is what gives us the nourishment we need. It allows us to acknowledge our power and remind us of our connectedness to community. If you’re ready to build back brighter, stronger, and become a pinnacle of support for women so they’re able to do the same, then this episode is for you! Plus what to expect from Trump’s election lawsuits. David Daley on the Republican’s growing advantage in redrawing the political map. Janelle Jones on how the coronavirus pandemic is deepening America's racial wealth gap and how to turn that around. And Bill Press with Lanny Davis on Trump’s losing strategy to deny electoral defeat. David Daly GOP wins in state legislatures means they will control a majority of redistricting efforts across the country. Journalist and voting rights advocate David Daley says that without significant reforms, Republicans will continue to rig the system to their advantage. Janelle Jones As an economist, Janelle Jones has focused her work on labor markets and racial inequalities. She says that systemic racism going into the pandemic is making America’s racial economic divide even worse, and only decisive policy action will reverse that. Sanji Moore has been working on designing a card game based on creating the best possible sandwich for the last ten years. Originally called "The Sandwich Game" and now called "As You 'Wich," Sanji thought of the basic premise for the game in a moment of panic when she was trying to fill an awkward silence on a date. A decade later, after testing countless versions of the game with friends and family, while making updates and developing it outside of her day job, Sanji and her creative partner Janelle Jones are finally launching the game on Kickstarter, along with help from Studio 71 Games. Boris Johnson will hammer out a new plan with senior ministers this week aimed at unblocking talks on Britain’s future relationship with the EU, and the delay of oil and gas projects in Senegal signals the aftershocks from the coronavirus crisis are even hurting economies that have avoided the worst of the pandemic itself. Plus, some economists have suggested the Federal Reserve could target the black unemployment rate in its monetary policy as a means of addressing income inequality in the US. One such advocate, Janelle Jones of the Groundwork Collaborative, unpacks her proposal. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

He made those links right up to the day before he was assassinated in Memphis in 1968 when he marched in support of striking sanitation workers. Episode 65: Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, just after he had marched on behalf of striking sanitation workers. Today, racism is still a defining characteristic of the economic system, which is what Jonathan and Janelle Jones of the Economic Policy Institute discuss in our lead segment. Jonathan then visits with two progressive Congressional candidates, one in California and the other in Michigan. Our Robber Baron is—once again—Wal-Mart and the Walton family.
Episode 41: Start by being inspired by Billy Bragg's "There Is Power In The Union". Then, listen to Jonathan talk to a Nissan worker who is at the center of a critical campaign to win a union at Nissan's plant in Canton, Mississippi—a two-day vote that will start tomorrow (and we will update the result for our listeners in next week's podcast!). Jonathan, then, marks this week's Black Women’s Equal Pay Day by talking with economist Janelle Jones about the blatant racism black women face in wages. Our Robber Baron of the week is Olivier Brandicourt, the CEO of French drug giant Sanofi, who is happy to pocket U.S. taxpayer-funded research money but won't commit to a fair drug price for a Zika virus vaccine—but, as you will learn, Bernie Sanders isn't sitting by quietly and accepting that scam.
