Jennifer Peterson, Manager of Continuous Improvement at Muscatine Power and Water (MPW) in Muscatine, Iowa, joined Jamie Flinchbaugh on the People Solve Problems podcast to share insights about her approach to problem solving. Jennifer's mission at MPW is to reduce frustration for coworkers through process improvement and problem solving. Working in a utility that provides critical services and never shuts down, Jennifer explains that prioritization is essential. At MPW, safety concerns come first, followed by reliability issues. Jennifer shares a practical example of how they tackled the recurring problem of squirrels chewing through utility lines by installing special pole wraps that prevent squirrels from climbing, significantly reducing outages. Rather than accepting this as an inevitable issue, her team actively sought solutions. When it comes to collaboration, Jennifer believes in inclusivity. She prefers having more stakeholders in the room rather than too few, aligning with Jamie's philosophy that problems can't be solved in isolation. Jennifer employs several facilitation strategies to ensure all voices are heard, especially from quieter team members. Her preparation includes learning about participants beforehand, sometimes through conversations with their supervisors, and creating a comfortable environment for contribution during sessions. Jennifer connects problem-solving effectiveness to the organization's mission. MPW revised their mission statement in 2023 to empower Muscatine residents and businesses to thrive, which has helped employees see the direct impact of their work. This connection to community creates natural motivation, as employees often serve their family members, friends, and neighbors. For tackling complex problems like safety and reliability, Jennifer recommends breaking them down into smaller, less intimidating parts. She draws a powerful connection between this approach and psychological safety, noting that when problems seem less overwhelming, people are more likely to embrace solutions and understand different perspectives. After 17 years at MPW, Jennifer recognizes the challenge of blind spots that come with long tenure. Her team documents processes for potential single points of failure and questions long-standing practices. They also use benchmarking and comparative data to challenge themselves, recently shifting from measuring against industry averages to top quartile performance. She notes that MPW's culture embraces holding themselves to high standards, with leadership promoting a standard of excellence throughout the organization. Jennifer combines her MBA from Western Illinois University, Bachelor's in English from St. Martin's University, and certifications as a PMP and Lean Black Belt to bring both analytical rigor and clear communication to her continuous improvement work. You probably remember Amy Acton from her daily press conferences back in the spring of 2020, when she used colorful language metaphors and a general sense of compassion to guide Ohioans through one of the most uncertain times in our history. But it was a challenging job for Acton, who left the role in June, 2020, and returned to her previous employer, The Columbus Foundation. Then, like many in the workforce over the past few years, she took a big career leap. Joining the newly launched Rapid 5 non-profit earlier this year as its first CEO. Acton is my guest this week, but she's not alone; she brought with her Jennifer Peterson, who likewise left her job as a Chief Executive at Easton, to join the organization as COO. When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. When I let go of what I have, I receive what I need. – Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu   In today's episode, I am interviewing a soul-sister, Jennifer Peterson, who is a hugely talented, goodhearted, award-winning producer/director, a passionate animal activist, and the host of the very successful podcast series, And Justice For Animals.  As a filmmaker, Jennifer has created award-winning content for top studios including Disney and Paramount; and she was recently a producer on the Hallmark Channel's American Rescue Dog Show. A graduate of the prestigious American Film Institute, Jennifer uses her film training as often as possible to create content that encourages positive change.  She wrote and directed three animal welfare PSA's, one of which won the nationally voted Humane Society of the United States People's Choice Award. A decade ago, Jennifer began organizing peaceful anti-puppy mill protests in Los Angeles, CA. These campaigns garnered nationwide attention for their effectiveness in helping close down several abusive pet stores, and in 2012 Jennifer was able to convince one of the largest mall developers in the country to stop leasing space to pet stores that sold dogs. Jennifer's production work often finds her interviewing A-list talent: Nicole Kidman, Justin Timberlake, Morgan Freeman are just a few who have sat across from her, and Jennifer's kindness and sense of humor create an environment where guests feel safe to open up. Creating the podcast And Justice For Animals was the natural next step for Jennifer, combining her love of in-depth conversation with her passion for helping animals.  Jennifer lives in Long Beach with her two rescue dogs and helps support local rescues with her real estate work. For Jennifer, it is not about what she does for a living but making sure whatever she does feels authentic and positively gives back to society.     This one is near and dear to my heart because I love animals so much and because the soul connection I feel with Jennifer as a fellow empath pulls at my heartstrings.    If you are feeling super insecure, left out, unloved, unaccepted, and constantly making “mistakes,” then this episode is for you. Jennifer makes me laugh, too!   Key Topics of Discussion: How Jennifer juggles wearing multiple hats and streams of income in her career in the entertainment industry, real estate, her animal welfare movement, and being open to shaking things up via change to manifest all her desires The definition of “happiness” and “success” in your 20s, 30s, 40s, etc. The power of CHOICE and how manifestations emerge because of it Overcoming thoughts of scarcity and limited beliefs after tragedy No, you're NOT crazy, you're empathetic, and you're needed in this world Identifying your own “compromise” cues because you want to feel accepted by others How surface-based “image” in society can be a disguise as “blessings” (ex: success, money, fancy cars, big houses, etc.) and what to do when you've realized all is not what it seems Lessons learned from Hollywood narcissists (yes, golden nuggets from them DO exist) How to obtain your power for the long-run and attract TO you for your long-term happiness and success (Write Into Reality as I call it) And, yes, we spill a little Hollywood tea! Her award-winning work with animals and why rescuing pets from shelters is crucial for your long-term benefits (and for your WALLET) over purchasing “designer” pets from breeders…we talk about our pups, too And I share with Jennifer how I manifested my version of Keanu Reeves!   For more information, please go to: And Justice for Animals Website: https://www.andjusticeforanimals.com  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndJusticeForAnimalsPodcast IG: @andjusticeforanimalspodcast   Filmmaking  Website: https://www.jenniferpetersondirector.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JenniferPetersonDirector   Real Estate  Website: https://www.SweetCaliforniaPads.com  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SweetCaliforniaPads IG: @JenniferPeterson_CaLiving     * On a side note: I would like to give a shout-out to ABC Channel 8 News (WFAA) for the adoption movements they give voice to on TV because they provide loving homes for both pets and children in Dallas, Texas. On this episode of Why Watch That:FIRST LOOKI Care a Lot Website: NetflixSynopsis: Poised with sharklike self-assurance, Marla Grayson (Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike) is a professional, court-appointed guardian for dozens of elderly wards whose assets she seizes and cunningly bilks through dubious but legal means. It’s a well-oiled racket that Marla and her business-partner and lover Fran (Eiza González) use with brutal efficiency on their latest “cherry,” Jennifer Peterson (two-time Academy Award winner Dianne Wiest) — a wealthy retiree with no living heirs or family. But when their mark turns out to have an equally shady secret of her own and connections to a volatile gangster (Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage), Marla is forced to level up in a game only predators can play — one that’s neither fair, nor square.Release Date: February 19, 2021Directed by: J BlakesonScreenplay by: J BlakesonStarring: Rosamund Pike, Peter Dinklage, Eiza González, Chris Messina, and Alicia Witt, with Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Dianne WiestDistributor: NetflixGenre: Comedy, Drama, ThrillerRunning Time: 1 hour 58 minutesRated RSNEAK PEEKSThe United States vs. Billie HolidayWebsite: HuluSynopsis: The legendary Billie Holiday, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, spent much of her career being adored by fans across the globe. Beginning in the 1940's in New York City, the federal government targeted Holiday in a growing effort to escalate and racialize the war on drugs, ultimately aiming to stop her from singing her controversial and heart-wrenching ballad, "Strange Fruit." Led by Oscar® nominated director Lee Daniels and introducing Grammy® nominated singer-songwriter Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holiday unapologetically presents the icon's complicated, irrepressible life. Screenplay writer Suzan-Lori Parks, the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, pens this intimate tale of a fierce trailblazer whose defiance through music helped usher in the civil rights movement.Release Date: Available on Hulu February 26, 2021Directed by: Lee DanielsScreenplay by: Suzan-Lori ParksStarring: Andra Day, Trevante Rhodes, Natasha Lyonne, Garrett Hedlund, Miss Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Evan Ross, Tyler James Williams, Tone Bell, and Erik LaRay HarveyDistributor: HuluGenre: Biography, Drama, MusicRunning Time: 2 hours 10 minutesRated RCherryWebsite: Apple TV+Synopsis: “Cherry” follows the wild journey of a disenfranchised young man from Ohio who meets the love of his life, only to risk losing her through a series of bad decisions and challenging life circumstances. Inspired by the best-selling novel of the same name, “Cherry” features Tom Holland in the title role as an unhinged character who drifts from dropping out of college to serving in Iraq as an Army medic and is only anchored by his one true love, Emily (Ciara Bravo). When Cherry returns home a war hero, he battles the demons of undiagnosed PTSD and spirals into drug addiction, surrounding himself with a menagerie of depraved misfits. Draining his finances, Cherry turns to bank robbing to fund his addiction, shattering his relationship with Emily along the way. Brought to the screen in bold, gritty fashion by visionary directors Anthony and Joe Russo, “Cherry” is a darkly humorous, unflinching coming-of-age story of a man on a universal quest for purpose and human connection.Release Date: In select theaters on Friday, February 26, 2021 and globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, March 12, 2021Directed by: Anthony Russo and Joe RussoScreenplay by: Angela Russo-Otstot and Jessica GoldbergStarring: Tom Holland, Ciara Bravo, Jack Reynor, Michael Rispoli, Jeff Wahlberg, Forrest Goodluck, and Michael GandolfiniDistributor: Apple TV+Genre: Crime, DramaRunning Time: 2 hours 20 minutesRated RThe Father Website: Sony Pictures ClassicsSynopsis: Anthony is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne, encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can’t make daily visits anymore and Anthony's grip on reality is unravelling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her? Today's episode features Jennifer Peterson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Woodbury University and author of Education in the School of Dreams: Travelogues and Early Nonfiction Film. We discuss her article for the "Medicine on Screen" program for the National Library of Medicine entitled "Darkening Day: Air Pollution Films and Environmental Awareness, 1960–1972." Peterson examines a select series of films from the postwar era, all sponsored by the United States government, that tackled growing concerns about air pollution and other environmental concerns in a world before the Environmental Protection Agency. The two look at unique aspects that make these films shocking today, not just for their strong anti-corporate advocacy but often their aesthetic qualities that reflected the experimental films of the era. But Peterson also acknowledges the limitations they held to advocate for positions by turning away from mass mobilization or community organizing by putting trust in the government, a position hard to rationalize in today's continuing climate emergency.
