Dr. Judith Orloff is a New York Times bestselling author, psychiatrist and is on the UCLA psychiatric clinical faculty. Dr. Orloff specializes in treating empaths and sensitive people in her Los Angeles based private practice. Judith Orloff MD asserts that we are keepers of an innate intuitive intelligence so perceptive that it can tell us how to heal — and prevent — illness. Yet intuition and spirituality are the very aspects of our wisdom usually disenfranchised from traditional health care. Dr. Orloff's latest book “The Empath's Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People” (Sounds True, 2017) is an invaluable resource to help sensitive people of all kinds develop healthy coping mechanisms in our high-stimulus world without experiencing compassion fatigue or burnout. Empaths can then fully embody their gifts of intuition, creativity, and compassion. Dr. Orloff's work has been featured all over the world in various media outlets.  You can learn more about at www.drjudithorloff.com.

Today it is such an honour to be joined by Dr. Judith Orloff for the final episode of Season 10. Dr Orloff is the New York Times bestselling author of The Empath's Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People. Her new book, Thriving as an Empath, along with it's companion, The Empath's Empowerment Journal offers daily self care tools for sensitive people. Dr. Orloff is a psychiatrist, an empath and is on the UCLA psychiatric clinical faculty. She synthesises the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, energy and spirituality. Dr. Orloff also specialises in treating empaths and highly sensitive people in her private practice. As a highly sensitive person myself, I related to this book and all her work massively and have returned to it since first reading it. If you find yourself being sensitive to other people's feelings, absorbing the pain of others, and many other traits of empaths which will go on to further, then Dr. Orloff is someone you should check out and recommend to anyone you know who also struggles with sensitivity. For many years I thought it was a huge nuisance being sensitive but Dr. Orloff shows you that you can manage being sensitive better and help you to thrive with it too. For this episode, Randye provides some insight into her life and career and how it serendipitously seems to mirror the book – a memoir -- she's chosen to cover with me. Randye seems to be a prime example of those of us who want to show our authentic self, wanting to express who we are and what we really desire, yet didn't quite know which avenue or form that authenticity should take until it reveals itself to us one day. And she's taking full advantage of that realization, because it's never too late. Randye, like the author of Where In The OM, spent much of her career in corporate America only to find it wasn't the best outlet for her to align her everyday work with who she is in her heart. Randye is a native New Yorker and founder and managing director of Marketing On a Mission, a marketing consultancy specializing in working with mission-driven social enterprises. Prior to this, she led Affordable Marketing Solutions, a small business marketing agency for 13 years. She is on the Board of Arts Alliance of Stratford and serves as their Marketing Director. Previously, she was VP of Marketing and New Product Development at a financial services company. And, she was the first General Manager of the start-up co-branded credit card division of a global travel company. She is the author of Affordable Marketing Solutions: Proven Techniques to Profitably Market Your Small Business, and an award-winning Adjunct Professor of Marketing and Communications. Randy and I met through the American Marketing Association – CT Chapter Some highlights from the episode: · There is a way to do work from the heart while meeting – and exceeding -- business goals. · Balance is everything. · “'No' is a complete sentence.” Some books mentioned in the conversation: · Quantum Marketing: Mastering the New Marketing Mindset for Tomorrow's Consumersby Raja Rajamannar · The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek · Late Bloomers: The Power of Patience in a World Obsessed with Early Achievementby Rich Karlgaard · The Empath's Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive Peopleby Judith Orloff The main question that underlies my conversation with Randye is: How are you truly living your authentic life, feeling the alignment of what you do and who you really are? We hear a lot in popular media about ill-fated relationships between empaths and narcissists.  Empaths being, loving and compassionate souls with sometimes questionable boundaries.  And narcissists being the self-absorbed, villains that take advantage of the empath’s kindness. In this episode, I am going to clarify some common misconceptions about the empath/narcissist dynamic and how we all learn to navigate our relationships with more love, insight, and awareness.   Empaths are loving, kind, compassionate souls who feel the feels of others like it's happening to them. Empaths sometimes have difficulty with personal boundaries because they can so easily take on other people’s perspectives, thoughts, and emotions. (1:00)Narcissists are highly manipulative, self-absorbed individuals, who are only concerned with getting their own needs met in relationships and think of others as means to that end.  Narcissism runs the spectrum from being slightly more concerned with yourself than others, to a full-blown personality disorder.  But most people occasionally exhibit some narcissistic tendencies (3:00)Empaths can be drawn into relationships with narcissists for many reasons. One reason could be that they grew up in a household with a narcissistic parent or sibling and did not learn to set boundaries.  Another reason can be that they have very big hearts, see the good in everyone.  (5:00)We all have the ability to release ourselves from these patterns.  If you find yourself in an abusive relationship, be kind to yourself and relationships and challenges serve a purpose in terms of our personal and spiritual growth. (7:00)To complicate matters, some folks with narcissistic tendencies may still have the ability to sense other people’s thoughts and feelings, and will use that information to upset and hurt you.  (8:00)Remember, we all have narcissistic tendencies, including empaths because we are human and we all have an ego.  We can all have moments when we get stuck in our own perspective and can’t see past our own needs.  This does not mean you or everyone is a narcissist. That term is thrown around often, out of context, and misused. Dr. Judith Orloff shares: "As a psychiatrist and an empath, I am fascinated by how the phenomenon of empathy works. I feel passionately that empathy is the medicine the world needs right now. Empathy will be the deciding factor between war and peace, between hatred and tolerance. We need to grow larger than our smaller selves and egos to be empathic in our lives. Empathy is the game-changer. It is the trait that will ultimately save the world. I feel passionately that empathy is the medicine the world needs right now. Empathy will be the deciding factor between war and peace, between hatred and tolerance. Empathy is the game changer. It is the trait that will ultimately save the world. There is a powerful connection between your emotions, intuition, and empathy. The magic comes when you learn how to tap into each of them to fully access your sensitivities without going on overload or becoming drained. In this talk Dr. Orloff answers these questions: As a conventionally trained physician, you are also an empath. What is an empath and what are the neuroscience findings explaining the empath experience? What is the difference between an HSP and an Empath? What are the different types of empaths and the gifts? How can empaths stop absorbing the emotions and physical symptoms of others and develop self-protection techniques so we can enjoy the gifts of sensitivity? Why are empaths misdiagnosed with sensory processing disorder, major depression, and panic attacks? What is the correct diagnosis? What is your greatest vision for the role of empaths in this world, in your lifetime and beyond and how can we as a collective support and continue your important voice in this field? My guest is the amazing intuitive, empath and psychic medium Denise Correll, co-host of the Enlightened Empaths podcast with Samantha Fey. Denise REALLY has the goods on how we can navigate tough times, even when we are sensitive, empathic and able to feel and soak up the energy of those around us. Why anyone can be an empath How to raise your vibration Why empaths often attract bullies and narcissists and get abused Red flags to notice when you’re giving your power away The connection between your energy and your empathy  Plus much, much more… Whew! For me there's been ups and downs these past few months of COVID-19 and when things became a little too much for me to handle I reached out to friends. I felt like my emotions were all over the place and I was feeling such anxiety about the future. I was feeling the pain and fear of so many loved ones who have been struggling with so much more. Whether it was illness, loss of jobs and going through the public unrest during the current Black Lives Matter movement. A lot has been happening and I was feeling this need to want to help, but I didn't know how and I felt like at times I couldn't get ahold of my emotions. That's when I learned it what it meant to be an "empath" (someone who feels others' emotions and their energy). And shout out to my radio colleague Riggs and my best friend Andrea who both recommend the book The Empath's Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People by Judith Orloff MD. WOW. It was spot on! HIGHLY recommend reading it if you feel like you're sensitive to other people's emotions. Episode 009: Surviving Life as Level-III Empath. In coming episodes you'll hear more about the physical components of how a body with PTSD eventually burns our early causing some predictable clinical syndromes. For now, we will focus on what an “empath” is. Even if you are not an empath or a “sensitive person”, there are many in our world and you won't fully grasp what PTSD is until you understand how a group of people different than you experience the world. What is a Level-III Empath? Sympathy is feeling sorry for someone. Empathy is sharing the suffering with them in a compassionate way. Being an empath means that you actually feel what the suffer feels. Not only to you sympathize but your empathy is experience in your body. Bodily sensations of pain, anxiety, tension and tightness build whenever you're around certain people or think about certain things. If this sound like you, you're probably an empath and you should get yourself educated about what you can do about it. Judith's book was a great start for me though quite a bit of it still sounds off the wall, so I create courses now in PTSD Academy to teach people how to heal from PTSD that are empaths. Surviving life as a Level-III Empath Two significant experiences led me to my current view on the “chemistry” between people and being an empath. The first happened when I was in psychiatry residency, I was surprised by the number of grandparent who were letting their children and grandchildren be disrespectful to them. None of the books or classes had prepared me for how to think about this problem, much less what to do about it. So, like I was trained to do, I did my own research and found a book titled Setting Boundaries with your Adult Children, by Allison Bottke that helped open my eyes to generational enabling behaviors. I was already familiar with enabling from Al-Anon, but somehow this was different. The second experience was the physical tension, stress, and pain I felt when I first started doing PTSD work. It seemed like the client's energy was transferred over to me and I began to listen closer to my friends that talked about “releasing” unwanted energy. That's when my Amazon search led me to Judith Orloff's book, The Empath's Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People.  Sensitive people? When did I become a sensitive person? Whoa…Sometimes a book shows up just when you need it. I rarely watch the news. I know it makes me feel horrible, but for several weeks over the past month I felt sucked into watching news that broke my heart. Every night, another chapter would unfold on the screen, causing more exhaustion. News replaced my morning yoga nidra meditation for the first week - that's how much I was caught up in the hypnotic pull of the news. And then Judith Orloff's book, The Empath's Survival Guide, showed up and I was reminded of something I already know - that I'm an empath and I need to protect myself. In fact, when the news is so crazy, this is exactly when we need to be UPing all our heart tools, like yoga nidra, not sitting in front of the news drowning our hearts in the pain of the day. In this month's episode, Judith and I spend time together talking about everything from: what an empath is ways to stay empathic without burning out a 3-minute heart meditation that can transform a stressful day a simple stress dial practice to do with your empathic children we talk about exciting neuroscientific findings explaining the empath experience how to get rid of emotional hangovers after seeing relatives or from stressful home or work places why so many empaths are misdiagnosed with depression, anxiety and chronic fatigue. (this is HUGE - please listen to understand this) current news and how not to feel so exhausted and anxious. “You are stronger than anything that's happening now,” Judith tells us. “Don't see yourself as a victim." We can thrive in our lives, women - protection strategies are out there and in this episode Judith offers a ton of them. If you've ever been called “too sensitive” and if you're looking for concrete tools to navigate modern life, then make yourself something calm to drink, and lean back, and listen. You may not have ever noticed this but hotels rarely offer milkshakes on their room service menu. And yet, if a hotel has a kitchen there is a good chance they have ice cream milk and a blender. For Life on Purpose Episode #73, my guest is the pioneering therapist Dr. Judith Orloff, a New York Times best-selling author and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA who has helped patients find emotional freedom for more than 20 years. Dr. Orloff synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting edge knowledge of intuition, energy, and spirituality to achieve physical and emotional healing. In this enlightening conversation, we discussed her brand new book, The Empath’s Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People (Sounds True), in which she offers an invaluable resource to help EMPATHIC people survive in an often insensitive world, plus her life and career as "the positive energy guru." “Empaths feel things first, then think, which is the opposite of how most people function in our over- intellectualized society,” says Dr. Orloff. "The key to self-care is to recognize when you’re experiencing the first signs of sensory overload or when you start absorbing negativity or stress from others. The sooner you can act to reduce stimulation and to center yourself, the more balanced and protected you will be." About: Transforming the face of psychiatry, Judith Orloff MD asserts that we are keepers of an innate intuitive intelligence so perceptive that it can tell us how to heal -- and prevent -- illness. Yet intuition and spirituality are the very aspects of our wisdom usually disenfranchised from traditional health care. Dr. Orloff is accomplishing for psychiatry what physicians like Dean Ornish and Mehmet Oz have done for mainstream medicine -- she is proving that the links between physical, emotional, and spiritual health can't be ignored. Dr. Orloff is a New York Times bestselling author and is on the UCLA psychiatric clinical faculty. She specializes in treating empaths and sensitive people in her Los Angeles based private practice. She has spoken at medical schools, hospitals, the American Psychiatric Association, Fortune Magazine's Most Powerful Women Summit, and alternative and traditional health forums -- venues where she presents practical intuitive tools to doctors, patients, and everyday people. In response to her work, The Los Angeles Times calls Dr. Orloff "a prominent energy-based healer." Dr. Orloff's latest book “The Empath’s Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People” (Sounds True, 2017) is an invaluable resource to help sensitive people of all kinds develop healthy coping mechanisms in our high-stimulus world without experiencing compassion fatigue or burnout. Then empaths can fully embody their gifts of intuition, creativity, and compassion. In Dr. Orloff’s first book, "Second Sight" she chronicles her struggles acknowledging and then finally embracing her gift of intuition. Her second book, "Dr. Orloff's: Guide to Intuitive Healing" shows how breakthroughs in healing our body, emotions, and sexuality can be accomplished by listening to intuition.   "Positive Energy," which has been translated into 25 languages, takes a probing look at the American epidemic of exhaustion and how we can reverse it using specific strategies to build energy and combat draining people. Her New York Times Bestseller, "Emotional Freedom" describes how to transform negative emotions into positive ones with specific techniques. Finally, "The Power of Surrender" describes the power of letting go in everyday life, health, and wellness--an enlivening and sane alternative to pushing, forcing, and over controlling people and situations. Dr. Orloff's work has been featured in O Magazine, Forbes, Newsweek, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, Self, Cosmo, The Washington Times, Teen Vogue, Scientific American, and the New York Post. She has appeared on The Today Show, The Dr. Oz Show, CBS Early Show, CNN, PBS, BBC5, and NPR. Dr. Orloff is also an  Elephant Journal, Huffington Post, and Psychology Today, blogger.
