Today on The Business of Wellness Podcast: Justin Levy is the Executive Director of Conscious Alliance, a Colorado-based hunger relief organization, and Randy Gilbride is the VP Commercial Operations at Sunrise Strategic Partners. This summer, Conscious Alliance announced that Sunrise Partners will join their family of annual donors, starting with a meal distribution event last month to support children facing food insecurity as the school year came to a close. Sunrise contributed financially to the event, providing 10,000 meals to local families in need. In addition to their monetary donation, Sunrise employees will donate 10 hours of their time individually to volunteer at Conscious Alliance's national distribution center and headquarters in Broomfield, CO, for a total of 100 hours annually. I wanted to learn more about this unique partnership in among for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in the food space, so Justin and Randy join me for a candid conversation about it all.   We discuss: Their unique individual backgrounds and experiences working in different areas of the food industry; why this partnership makes sense at this moment, and how growth capital investment can help move the needle forward in ending hunger in the U.S.; why collaboration is so important;  what makes for a great collaborator across industries; how these organizations will continue to work together to support their individual missions of providing nutritious meals for people who need it, and what's next for each of their respective organizations. If you're interested in food investment, early stage investing, behind-the-scenes in non-profit work, the work that goes into food venture capital investing, and what a venture capitalist looks for before investing in a CPG food and beverage company, this episode is for you.  —

Justin tells the guys about the work that Conscious Alliance does to provide food for people in need throughout America, how his experience with Cerebral Palsy helped him develop a positive outlook on the world, and the extremely gratifying emotional reaction that he experiences from Conscious Alliance. He also tells the guys about the logistics of efficient food distribution, what it was like to learn to walk four separate times and learn to read at age 21, and why he embraces the attitude of “I don't know, let's try it.” Since 2012, Justin Levy has served as executive director of Conscious Alliance, a Colorado-based national hunger relief nonprofit that uses the connective power of art, music, and partnerships with food brands to feed communities in need. Their belief is that there is enough food to feed everyone in the country if it's distributed at the right place and the right time. Conscious Alliance brings healthy food to communities across the U.S., with an emphasis on remote and rural areas, including Native American reservations. What began as a grassroots food drive at a local show has grown into a national movement, and has provided more than 6 million meals, to since its inception in 2002.  ----------- *DISCLAIMER: This podcast does NOT provide medical advice. We promise that you'll be immensely inspired by today's guest, Justin Levy has served as Executive Director of Conscious Alliance since 2012. His focus on expanding the organization's distribution capabilities resulted in the acquisition of a national distribution center and headquarters in Broomfield, Colorado in 2020, as well as the launch of new and innovative programs to accelerate delivery and impact. Levy has made food quality a priority, improving the health and nutrition standards of donated foods. Levy's focus lies heavily on serving the Native American and youth communities through seeking donations, as well as implementing gardening programs that align with community culture. On a personal note, Levy's story of overcoming a life of unique challenges is content-worthy all on its own. With Cerebral Palsy and severe dyslexia, Levy works with his limitations to bring a fierce spirit to support others. Levy has had 14 surgeries, has been in and out of wheelchairs, and has endured thousands of hours of painful physical therapy – and he had to learn how to walk four different times before finishing high school. Due to the hardships he has endured throughout his life, Levy is unable to read or drive. As a highly functioning Executive Director, where he lacks in creating spreadsheets and emails, he makes up for tenfold through inspiration, facilitating a powerful organizational culture, and cultivating meaningful partnerships through strong relationships. Today on the podcast I have Justin Levy, Executive Director for Conscious Alliance. I have known about Conscious Alliance since their earliest days. I would see them doing poster giveaways in exchange for canned food at shows I was attending growing up. Once I dove into their mission and how they supported those in need I was blown away. The work they do at Pine Ridge in particular is so moving to me. The idea of pairing music and music fans with helping people in need has always been the ethos of Satsang. Those same principles are the very foundation of Conscious Alliance and I could not be more honored to be working with them.To celebrate the premiere of the new single we have dedicated a page on our website to Conscious Alliance. There you will find the first listen video for “Alone With You” as well as information on Conscious Alliance and their mission. “We went from working with one band to working with hundreds of musicians and artists like Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, Michael Franti, The Dead and so many others!”   Justin Levy (5:11-5:23)   It all started when Justin Levy had an idea 20 years ago to teach young people how to fight against hunger by hosting a food drive at a concert. He was attending University of Colorado at the time and as a part of his senior thesis he held a food drive at Fillmore Auditorium in March 2002 at a String Cheese Incident concert. In exchange for donating, concert goers received a limited edition poster to commemorate the experience and they ended up bringing in over 4,000 pounds of donations. Now, Conscious Alliance is a movement of artists, musicians, food makers and music lovers on a mission to end hunger in underserved communities nationwide with over 119 festivals and concerts under their belt.   The first drive benefited the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota where 40,000 Oglala Lakota Native Americans live. Pine Ridge Reservation is one of the most economically isolated communities in the country and is about the same size as the state of Connecticut. For 40,000 people it only has one grocery store! Conscious Alliance has since opened a food pantry and started working with all 15 schools on the reservation to make sure kids going to school have plenty of healthy food to eat.   “We started developing relationships with schools knowing that where the kids go every day we can reach a lot of families with the backpack program approach.” Justin Levy (14:16-14:39)   Along the way, Conscious Alliance has met plenty of “hungry heroes”, many of whom are in the natural food community, like Justin Gould from Justin's Peanut Butter. These brands helped shine a light on the huge amount of food waste going on in the United States, which triggered Conscious Alliance to work out logistically how they can go to different brand's warehouses as they tour with musicians throughout the country and pick up food before it hits the landfill… food that grocery stores won't buy or will throw out because it's, for example, within 90 days of hits shelf life, the brand is getting crowded out or is going through a reprint. Great brands like Applegate, Conagra, Hormel, and many more you know have all partnered with Conscious Alliance.   Think your kids are obsessed about trading cards? Try concert goers and their posters! At every event, an attendee can make a food or monetary donation and receive a limited edition screen printed poster with the band, venue and date on it. It's a special reminder of the opportunity the concert goer had to give back, make a difference, and of course a memory of the amazing time they had.   Conscious Alliance was still able to make an impact during the pandemic when, of course, live music events were on pause. At the beginning of lockdown, one of CA's board members (who happens to own a restaurant) asked Justin if he had a way to distribute meals if the restaurant made them. Justin connected with a kindergarten teacher on the Advisory Board and ended up working with three teachers who were going to their kids' doorsteps and dropping off dinners made from various restaurants in Boulder, Colorado. This way, the teachers could check in on their students and make sure their family's were okay, and everyone was receiving quality nutrition during this scary time.   “One of the first days of the lockdown in March 2020 we had a board member who owns a restaurant and say, ‘If we prepare meals, do you have an outlet to give them away?'” Justin Levy (16:01-16:20)   This caught the attention of the World Central Kitchen, a non-profit that sets up mobile kitchens in areas that need them most, like war zones for example. When partnering with WCK, Conscious Alliance went from serving around 160 restaurant meals a week to almost 2000, making for about 2.6 million meals total in 2020.    Now that restrictions are removed and we're “coming back to life”, Conscious Alliance is back at it again with concerts, festivals and music events. How can you get involved or find out where they'll be next? Simply visit their website and find a listing of upcoming events or a way to donate virtually. You might see a band or event you've been dying to go to, or some of your favorites like Jack Johnson, The Dead, Umphrey's McGee and many more that you can now see live again!   How to get involved Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business! We were very proud to be given the opportunity to interview Bill Nershi of String Cheese Incident, so even though Rob Turner was on assignment in New England, Seth Weiner was able to soldier on and do what is probably his best to-date solo interview (although we are all confused as to what "taking the realm" means). Bill and Seth wasted no time in comparing Fox's. They also spoke about how, like Railroad Earth's Tim Carbone, Bill is a Colorado transplant from New Jersey. Bill elaborates on this, the ever-growing "New Grass" (aka "Jam Grass") scene and how he went from being a fan of Del McCoury to becoming one of his peers. Nershi also speaks of how his days as an aspiring visual artist led to him creating the band's now-familiar "Pagan Swirl" artwork. He lets us into his thoughts about writing and performing with his wife Jill, Jim Lauderdale and Benny Burle Galloway and speaks of the importance of having a representative of the "lyric police" in the room. The joys of bringing forth new songs to the SCI repertoire, and dusting off old ones (SCI had just a short time before this interview performed the "40 Miles To Tulsa" chestnut for the first time in 20 or so years, and this performance is included at the end). Bill also throws some loved toward key people behind the scenes in the SCI family who plan and execute their most elaborate incidents, and gets a tad emotional when talking about his friend/neighbor Jeff Austin who had passed away shortly before this interview. Seth also speaks with Justin Levy of Conscious Alliance and they briefly discuss how his CA harnesses the energy and passion of the music world to feed hungry people of the wider world. Levy talks about how he found his way to serving others for a living, and gives examples of ways that Conscious Alliance encourages people to participate. The episode ends first with Turner talking about his experience traveling to Philadelphia for a weekend-long Bachelor's Party in celebration of his long-time friend Jefferson Waful (who is the Director of Video at CID Entertainment) and then with a soundboard recording of the aforementioned String Cheese Incident bustout rendition of "10 Miles To Tulsa."
