The study of history shapes our understanding of the world and ourselves. However, there are concerted efforts by some to distort and rewrite American history through a revisionist lens. Dr. John Kenneth White provides analysis of this troubling trend and how it threatens to whitewash uncomfortable truths and perpetuate a narrative that does a disservice to historical accuracy. As citizens, we have a responsibility to vigilantly safeguard the integrity of our nation's complex and nuanced history from those who would manipulate it for their own agendas. Because if we do not, then those legacies and lessons will be lost in future generations.

Today's episode begins at 21:29, because we were extra chatty so be warned now. If we aren't your cup of tea, then jump ahead to the case. Kenneth White, 32, was fatally struck by a 6-pound rock hurled off an overpass by a group of five teens. The incident occurred on October 18, 2017, as White was traveling on Interstate 75 in Michigan, north of Detroit. Several vehicles, including the one White was in, were damaged by rocks thrown off of the overpass, until one rock took a life it was never supposed to take. In a recent enlightening conversation with Kenneth White, Principal Security at MongoDB, we delved into the intricacies and innovations of MongoDB's latest offering in data security - Queryable Encryption. This discussion, part of my ongoing series on Tech Talks Daily, offered profound insights into MongoDB's journey from a startup to a significant player in enterprise-level data management and security. Kenneth White's insights began with an overview of MongoDB's evolution. Initially perceived as a tool tailored for startups, MongoDB has significantly expanded its reach and capabilities. It now plays a crucial role in managing high-value workloads across various industries, including finance, healthcare, and telecom. This transformation from a startup-focused technology to an enterprise powerhouse underscores MongoDB's adaptability and the importance of flexible, robust database management systems in today's business landscape. A central focus of our discussion was MongoDB's Queryable Encryption, a groundbreaking approach that allows developers to perform searches on encrypted data without exposing it. This innovation is crucial in today's digital environment, where data breaches and insider threats are increasingly common. Using cryptographic tokens, MongoDB's approach ensures that the database processes encrypted results without accessing the data or queries. This method bolsters security and aligns with stringent regulatory requirements like GDPR and PCI, making it a valuable tool for businesses concerned with data privacy and compliance. Developing Queryable Encryption was a journey filled with challenges, as Kenneth highlighted. One of the primary goals was to make this advanced encryption technology accessible and user-friendly for developers. Balancing ease of use with high performance and scalability was no small feat. The MongoDB team dedicated significant time and resources over five months to optimize performance, ensuring that the solution met modern developers' speed and efficiency expectations. An intriguing aspect of MongoDB's advancement in encryption technology was the strategic acquisition of a startup from Brown University specializing in encrypted search. This move led to an Advanced Cryptography Research Group within MongoDB. This group's establishment marks a significant stride in MongoDB's commitment to leading-edge encryption solutions, positioning the company at the forefront of data security innovation. Looking ahead, Kenneth outlined MongoDB's priorities for the upcoming year. The company is set to make strides in AI and machine learning capabilities, mainly focusing on vector search. Enhancements in search offerings and ongoing security innovations, including differential privacy and multi-party computation, are also on the agenda. These initiatives reflect MongoDB's dedication to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving world of database technology and data security. In conclusion, my conversation with Kenneth White from MongoDB offered a comprehensive view of how MongoDB is reshaping the landscape of data security and database management. The introduction of Queryable Encryption is a testament to MongoDB's innovative spirit and commitment to addressing the complex data security challenges businesses face today. As MongoDB continues to evolve and introduce new solutions, it remains a crucial player in the future of secure, efficient, and user-friendly database technologies.
At about 8:30 p.m. on October 18th of 2017, 32-year-old Kenneth Andrew White is going home after working at a construction site in Au Gres, Michigan. Sitting in the passenger seat of his colleague's van, Kenneth and his coworker are only ten minutes away from their destination in Mt. Morris. Suddenly, a six-pound rock crashes through the front windshield. Kenneth is hit in the head and knocked unconscious. Shortly after, Kenneth is declared dead. Days later, investigators discover the culprits behind this deadly rock: five teenage boys from Clio, Michigan, aged 15 to 17. The group was known for throwing hard objects off highway overpasses for the purpose of causing vehicular damage. After years of controversial court proceedings, only one of the Clio Five would be sentenced as an adult. In episode 268, Jac and Alexis examine how five teenagers with no criminal history killed an innocent bystander through a dangerous “game.”

Today, Ed is joined by Kenneth White, an Associate Professor of Personal & Family Financial Planning at the University of Arizona. Starting out as a CPA, Kenneth realized early in his career that while he loved the art of money, he hated cubicles. He tried his hand at an investment company before becoming a revenue agent with the IRS. Finally, he decided to pursue his dream of obtaining his Ph.D. in Family Resource Management at Ohio State University, and has been in academia ever since. Listen in as Kenneth discusses the ongoing research being done on financial well-being and how financial professionals can improve client outcomes. He addresses the common hesitation that one has to be good at math in order to be financially literate, saying that it's not as important to know how the math works as it is to know what the math means. Kenneth shares how parents can best pass on life-defining money messages to their kids, and how families that have been historically excluded from quality financial information can go about acquiring that information. Finally, Kenneth gives his best tips to the next generation of financial professionals, speaking on why altruism is a powerful motivator for one's career, tapping into client psychology, and why financial professionals need their own financial planners. "Developers aren't cryptographers. We can only do so much security training, and frankly, they shouldn't have to make hard choices about this encryption mode or that encryption mode. It should just, like, work," said Kenneth White, a security principal at MongoDB, explaining the need for MongoDB's new Queryable Encryption feature. In this latest edition of The New Stack Makers podcast, we discuss [sponsor_inline_mention slug="mongodb" ]MongoDB[/sponsor_inline_mention]'s new end-to-end client-side encryption, which allows an application to query an encrypted database and keep the queries in transit encrypted, an industry first, according to the company. White discussed this technology in depth to TNS publisher Alex Williams, in a conversation recorded at MongoDB World, held last week in New York. MongoDB has offered the ability to encrypt and decrypt documents since MongoDB 4.2, though this release is the first to allow an application to query the encrypted data. Developers with no expertise in encryption can write apps that use this capability on the client side, and the capability itself (available in preview mode for MongoDB 6.0) adds no noticeable overhead to application performance, so claims the company. Data remains encrypted all times, even in memory and in the CPU; The keys never leave the application and cannot be accessed by the server. Nor can the database or cloud service administrator be able to look at the raw data. For organizations, queryable encryption greatly expands the utility of using MongoDB for all sorts of sensitive and secret data. Customer service reps, for instance, could use the data to help customers with issues around sensitive data, such as social security numbers or credit card numbers. In this podcast, White also spoke about the considerable engineering effort to make this technology possible — and make it easy to use for developers. "In terms of how we got here, the biggest breakthroughs weren't cryptography, they were the engineering pieces, the things that make it so that you can scale to do key management, to do indexes that really have these kinds of capabilities in a practical way," Green said. It was necessary to serve a user base that needs maximum scalability in their technologies. Many have "monster workloads," he notes. "We've got some customers that have over 800 shards, meaning 800 different physical servers around the world for one system. I mean, that's massive," he said. "So it was a lot of the engineering over the last year and a half [has been] to sort of translate those math and algorithm techniques into something that's practical in the database."

In it he posits, among other things, that: there are three times as many books borrowed as bought in the United States every year, and four times as many in Canada; that libraries don't passively lend books, they compete with booksellers by advertising how much people can save by borrowing rather than buying books, and they compete among themselves to lend the most books possible; and that most public library lending is of books read for entertainment, not edification, by people who can afford to pay for books. We talked about his article via Zoom.

The misinformation spread during the COVID-19 pandemic has made what happened with the 2016 U.S. elections look like the “good old days.” Epidemiologists are on center stage trying to explain complex topics to billions of people concerned for their lives-- and sometimes politicians are aiming to do the same. The multiplier effect is how hopelessly entangled challenging technical issues like end to end encryption and contact tracing via bluetooth on mobile phones are now also being publicly debated. The most natural reaction? Confusion. Kenn White is here to help.During our 60 minute conversation with Kenn, Jack and Dave go past the headlines trumpeting Zoom’s security issues in an attempt to lay bare the real issues with their recent missteps. Their initially misleading claims around end to end (E2E) encryption is our primary focus, but before diving deep into Zoom, Kenn explains exactly how hard it is to make it work by describing his 2 year journey to deliver E2E encryption at MongoDB. We pull apart the remaining concerns and Zoom’s impressive response to provide our take on just how worried you should be, from Johnson Elementary School to the defense industrial base.Kenn has a unique perspective on the idea to use contact tracing via Bluetooth to identify who infected people have been in proximity to in order to slow the spread of a disease. Having spent 10+ years supporting clinical trials, he explains why using our mobile phones to make contact tracing during the COVID-19 pandemic is unlikely to be successful in the near future. We hope this conversation with Kenn brings you clarity and calm at a time when both are in short supply.Note: We spend the first ~15 minutes talking about coping strategies during the pandemic. If you’d like to jump straight to the content focused on E2E encryption it begins right around the 15 minute mark.About KennKenneth White is a security engineer whose work focuses on networks and global systems. In the third episode of Spoken Earth, Adam Weymouth speaks with the Scottish writer, academic and activist Alastair McIntosh. McIntosh is a Scottish writer, academic and activist. He is the author of several books, including Poacher's Pilgrimage and Hell and High Water, and most famously, Soil and Soul: People Versus Corporate Power. McIntosh works in the discipline of human ecology, which explores the tangled web of connections between “the natural environment and the social environment,” bringing politics, economics, sociology and more within the realm of a more traditional ecology. In particular, McIntosh, who is a practising Quaker, is interested in extending the discipline to encompass both psychology and spirituality. All of his work, whether through his activism, his teaching, his speaking or his writing, is focused on opening us up to that multidisciplinary approach. As white supremacy and neo-Nazis increase their activities, so too has the coverage of their actions. In this episode of Cable Street, I chat with reporter Martin Patriquin about his work covering neo-Nazis. We discuss how reporters research neo-Nazi networks, the pressure reporters face in response to their stories, the response from these groups, and how reporting on issues has a real-world impact on fighting hate. Parami delivers this week’s FBA Podcast entitledLiving In The Greater Mandala. She brings this theme alive in the most human, poetic, and inspired of ways. Her range is broad as she evokes the mandala itself, and the profound, playful path of the Bodhisattva. Calling forth Rumi and Hafiz, the great Buddhist Perfection of Wisdom texts, Keats, Yeats, Robert Hass, and Kenneth White, she illustrates what it looks and feels like to live dedicated to the wellbeing of all as the most natural thing in the world. As always with Parami, her great experience shines through in this talk – a terrific encouragement to anyone thinking of integrating this perspective of joy into the challenge of everyday life… Recorded in Adelaide, Australia, October 2015 for the 2015 Triratna International Urban Retreat.
Munisha introduces the Urban Retreat on Sangha Day, Stockholm Buddhist Centre 21 November 2015. The music is "Erbarme Dich", from the St Matthew Passion by JS Bach, with mezzo soprano Janet Baker. The poem is A High Blue Day on Scalpay, by Kenneth White. Here it is, with Viryabodhi's translation into Swedish. *A High Blue Day on Scalpay* This is the summit of contemplation, and no art can touch it Blue, so blue, the far-out archipelago and the sea shimmering, shimmering No art can touch it, the mind can only try to become attuned to it To become quiet, and space itself out, to become open and still, unworlded Knowing itself in the diamond country, in the ultimate unlettered light. Kenneth White, translated into Swedish by Viryabodhi
