As the saying goes, ‘the only constant in life is change', but research from System1 and the IPA shows that consistency is key when it comes to effective advertising. As we enter a new age of effectiveness, it's never been more important to understand the impact and benefits of compound creativity, and the risks and costs of inconsistent creative and short-term agency relationships. In this episode, Ellis Bird is joined by Andrew Tindall, SVP Global Partnerships at System1, and Jamie Peate, Global Head of Effectiveness and Retail at McCann Worldgroup, to uncover the real impact of consistency and the risks (and cost) of inconsistent creative and short ad lifespans. They will explore the latest research and share real examples of some of the most impactful and consistent work. What we cover in the episode What is compound creativity? The power of fame Moving on without moving off – achieving creative consistency Why Kevin the Carrot became the nation's favourite Christmas ad of all time The importance of craft Andrew's ‘Marketer of the year' The impact of social media on defining success The role of intuition and data Read more about System1's research on Compound Creativity with the IPA here. About the speakers Andrew Tindall is SVP Global Partnerships at System1. He champions modern marketing effectiveness in a no-bullshit, practical way. Responsible for System1's thought leadership and global agency partnerships, he combines data with System1's ad database to create publications exploring emotion and creativity's role in effectiveness across the media mix. Ex-Diageo and Bacardi, he loves an IRL chat at the bar but also frequently stirs debate on LinkedIn and is a columnist for The Drum. Jamie Peate, Global Head of Effectiveness and Retail at McCann, has helped to drive a culture at local, regional and global levels that holds creativity and effectiveness central to all of the agency's output. His strategic approach to the Aldi account exemplifies his approach – long running campaigns such as Like Brands and Kevin the Carrot have reaped benefits for the client and helped redefine the grocery sector.

In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Emily Chang. Emily's financial adventures began in her early 20s in the most unexpected way. One frigid night, Emily found a young girl huddled by the roadside, clearly beaten and wearing nothing but a windbreaker. She took the girl to a diner, offered her a meal, and then invited her to stay in her spare room for the night. That one night turned into a week, then months, until Emily could help her find stability. Emily's family worried the girl might steal or harm her, but Emily chose to see the potential for good. She helped not just that one girl but went on to assist 17 individuals over the next 23 years, transforming lives one by one. Emily is a global commercial leader with 24 years of experience spanning QSR, Retail, Hospitality, Creative, Tech, and FMCG industries. An acknowledged thought leader in Digital Customer Experience, Workplace Culture, and Business Strategy, Emily holds an exceptional track record of accelerating global brands. She is a bicultural leader with proven success bridging China and U.S. cultures. Before joining VML, Emily was CEO of McCann Worldgroup in China, where she looked after 450 team members across four agencies located in three offices. She developed new strategic and digital O2O capabilities to partner with clients like IKEA, LEGO, The North Face, and Innocent Juice. Prior to McCann, Emily was CMO of Starbucks China, where she oversaw all commercial functions including Digital Flywheel, Loyalty, Sales & Partnerships, Category Management, and Studio. She led the commercial teams that brought O2O experiences to life: Shanghai Roastery Augmented Reality, Starbucks Delivery, and Digital Gifting. Prior to Starbucks, Emily served as Chief Commercial Officer for InterContinental Hotels Group, Greater China where she led transformation of brand experience, loyalty offering, data and BI, and OTA strategy/implementation to turn around share and become the #1 hotel brand in China. As the first executive in China for Apple Retail, she oversaw the APAC region, expanded the flagship footprint, and developed the Apple Asia retail operating model. Daryl Lee took on the role as global CEO of McCann Worldgroup in July 2022 with a vision to bring the network's multidisciplinary agencies closer together. With a career path straddling both media and creative agencies, he has the background to do it. The ultimate goal is to put audience planning and data at the heart of what McCann does best: build enduring brands. That involved a restructuring of its leadership team to create dual roles across agencies and at the Worldgroup level to ensure key execs have “hats” in both camps. In this episode, Lee chats about how the network is attracting and retaining the best young creative talent, despite advertising gaining complexity and losing the “simple sexiness” of the Mad Men era. He also shares his favorite advertising moments from Super Bowl LVII.Listen to this episode and subscribe to Campaign Chemistry wherever you get your podcasts. Laura Simpson argues that online meetings have good for individuals and companies, and that we should be wary of returning to the status quo. The meeting, says Laura, is the fundamental unit of white collar working life. And in the last couple of years it's undergone a revolution - out have gone the suits, glass tables and rigid hierarchy; in have come moments of vulnerability, the hand raise function, and unannounced visits from children. It's happened in plain sight, but its consequences have been little discussed. Laura is a Global Director at advertising and marketing company, McCann Worldgroup. As she shares stories from some of the meetings she has been in, she explains why she believes this change has created a re-imagining of what meetings could be, and a rebalancing of power within them - with more people, and in particular more junior people and those who previously felt marginalised, empowered to contribute. In this episode, Jack Sharry talks with John Connors, the Founder and CEO of Boathouse Inc. Before building his firm in 2001, John worked for corporations such as Hill Holiday and McCann Worldgroup. John's vision of success and high performance as a marketer was greatly influenced by these industry pioneers and set him on the path to building his own firm. John talks about why maintaining clients over the long-term is essential to success. High client retention is a matter of having a connection strategy, leveraging data, and building a narrative around the business. John and Jack discuss the concept of narrative economics, the importance of storytelling, and the use of data sets to drive brand strategies. “Narrative drives economic impact. Most CEOs and CFOs know that. They have economic data (GDP, employment, housing, etc.) but never narrative data to look at causality, correlation related to the economic data.” ~ John Connors Main takeaways Don't over-index on only one part of the marketplace. Look at the state of the whole marketplace, even of the outliers. Study what influences consumers. Institutions such as politics, media, and others are a big part of your client's lives. Combine what's important to both of you when strategizing. Use innovative tools to gauge what's flourishing in the market. The data sets are good indicators of how you can tweak your marketing strategies. Your story builds over time. Stay updated and continue to level up your knowledge about your industry.
