Interview by Kris PetersIt's been a long six years between drinks for Adelaide chaotic hardcore outfit Life Pilot, with their last new music coming in the form of a stand-alone single back in 2019. After giving fans a taste of their sonic force with a 2013 Compass split record with Statues (WA), their debut EP High Noon in 2014 and second EP Too Hot For Killing in 2017 Life Pilot would release just two more singles in the ensuing eight years but have more than made up for their absence with the recent release of their self-titled debut album. The album speaks on numerous themes; fear, doubt, frustration, self-reflection, compulsions, night terrors, societal expectations and how these all play into personal connections and our interaction with the world around us. It is a deeply personal record for the band members and lyrically it is predominantly introspective with a focus on close relationships. With the benefit of age and maturity, Life Pilot felt now was the right time to open up through their music, resulting in a more dynamic and vulnerable side of their musical psyche to come to the fore.HEAVY caught up with drummer Eli Green to talk more."It's a pretty hectic 12 tracks of chaotic, angular metalcore," he surmised on the album's musical direction, "but it's got some beautiful moments tucked within it. We self-recorded and produced the whole thing, which is pretty cool."We ask what expectations - if any - the band had considering it was their first full-length album."We really weren't sure because we've taken a long time to put this together," Green measured. "This whole thing started before COVID and then obviously that wiped everything out for a while, and we had band members having kids and all sorts of stuff throughout that period. So we weren't in any rush to churn out a record. The time to capitalise and keep momentum had long gone in the pandemic. We then just wanted to make something that we were really proud of. I guess what we expected as far as a response was anything from crickets to what we got, which was in the first couple of days we ended up at the top of the iTunes charts, which was a first for our band. That was really quite amazing. We just thought, wow, after all this time, it seems like there's some people who care about this as much as we do and want to support it."In the full interview, Eli introduced Life Pilot's new album in greater detail, emphasizing its blend of chaotic hardcore and metalcore which reflects the band's personal growth and significant life events. HEAVY inquired about the expectations for the album's release and the selection of singles, to which Green responded that while they did not extensively analyse their past work, they aimed to connect with their earlier style while exploring new musical elements. The emotional depth of the lyrics, especially in the final track, was noted as a significant shift from previous themes.Eli also described the unpredictable nature of Life Pilot's live performances, comparing them to Southern metalcore shows, and expressed enthusiasm for their upcoming interstate tour, highlighting the energy of all-ages shows and the memorable experiences they create and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Band It About - Proudly Supporting Live Music "Podcast Series"
Eli Green had no desire to play the drums when he first started, his mother signed him up for lessons as a distraction while his parents were separating, and although he enjoyed the lessons and relationship that developed with his drum teacher, Eli eventually stopped playing. It wasn’t until a couple of years later when his school friends told him that they were going to start a band and insisted on him being their drummer, that the initial spark would ignite his desire to play, taking him on a musical journey which resulted in him becoming a professional musician gaining a lot of work as a session drummer, a touring drummer and music educator. Eli shares some hilarious memorable gig stories, discusses his early connection with ‘The Mark of Cain’ (where he is most well known from as their touring drummer), since 2013 and talks about how posting a demo to triple j on a whim resulted in his band ‘Life Pilot’ being played on-air that week, and how that raised their popularity which led to them winning the triple j Unearthed competition in 2013, opening the Soundwave Festival in Adelaide, and sharing the stage with bands that had influenced their band members, including 'Linkin Park', 'Blink-182' and 'Metallica'! Music: both the intro and outro are original songs written and performed by 'Life Pilot', "Pretty Like A Pistol" and "Dark, Dark, Goose", both songs were released as singles in 2019. In conjunction with World Financial Planning Day (7th Oct 2020), Your Money, Your Life is launched to bring you contents that covers personal finance and life.In this pilot episode, I talk about the reason this show is named Your Money, Your Life, and what are the 2 mindset we typically tend to view our relationship with money is.In the first mindset, we view money as something that we need to live a life that is align to what we want for ourselves; while the second mindset is when we place money at the center stage and we plan our lives around it, in this situation, we live for money, and that is why we see people chase after money. We also touch on the idea of 'more money = more happiness', and how we can avoid living for money.

Because in order to know what will work for you in 2020 you need to first understand the why, what and how of everything you did, didn't do and who you became this year.Luckily for me, I captured my goals and intentions for 2019 in the very first episode of the Untapped Podcast where I shared 19 Things I Will and Will Not Do in 2019.I also did it as two separate vlogs on my YouTube channel if you prefer to watch my entertaining videos. And for the first time ever since putting it out, I have just looked back at these. And I'm not gonna lie, it's not pretty.I think I pretty much missed almost everything and there's a very good reason for that - because I never reviewed them!So let me run through these quickly, and then give you a recap of what actually happened this year. And why it's totally fine with me that I missed so many of these 19 things.I also reveal to you what really happened this year, I think you'll probably have a pretty decent understanding. And I have a lot of compassion for myself in this moment as to why so many of these got missed, and even reading them now, I must admit, what the heck was I thinking? In this episode you'll learnWhy reflecting on your year can help you envision what you want for the next yearWhat worked and what didn't work for me in 2019Why it's okay to not achieve every single one of your goalsHow to plan your ideal 2020Podcast ResourcesTake a look back on my first episode of UNTAPPED where I made my list of 19 things I will and will not do in 2019Check out the Plan Your Ideal Freedom Year course that will help you head into 2020 with crystal clear vision!Learn more about how Life Pilot can help you to reflect regularly throughout the year See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Madonna has truly mastered the art of reinvention, so when a friend told me she was coming on the Graham Norton show this weekend, I stuck around to watch her segment.I couldn’t recall the last time I’d seen Madonna speak and was intrigued to see what she would deliver.Naturally, she didn’t disappoint. She walked on stage wearing an eye patch and a sexy number which had her boobs almost falling out of her corset (a wardrobe malfunction I’m sure she would not be thrilled with knowing about since she controls her image with immense care).Yet her star power was undeniable, and the guests on the couch alongside her were left to sit quietly as she answered Graham’s questions with mystique, cheekiness, strength and an appropriate amount of intrigue. She has just launched a new album and is going on tour at the age of 60 years old! This in itself is a huge testament to her longevity, creativity and ability to keep on changing with the times and reinventing herself, to not only survive in a super competitive market dominated by teenagers, but to thrive in it for over four decades.Reinvention is a necessity to remain relevantIn the past few months, several of my friends compared me to Madonna – not because I like to sing and dance to 80s music (which I really do) or because I wear sexually enticing outfits (I don’t), but because they said I’m always reinventing myself.I have to admit I was surprised by this as I personally couldn’t see it, and so they explained to me that I had successfully, in their eyes, morphed from corporate career girl to Tech CoFounder to blogger, to being The Suitcase Entrepreneur with relative ease over the last 10 years. And that when I returned home to New Zealand in late 2016, I apparently made it look easy to morph into being a brand …ME here on nataliesisson.comYet that couldn’t be further from the truth. In my world I’ve been through a two year long metamorphosis filled with doubt, fear, curiosity, joy and exasperation. If you’ve listened to my podcast or read my blog post on When Too Much Change is Dangerous, you’ll know that I did a 180 degree life flip that entailed going from:Constant full-time travel out of my suitcase to living in one house, with no international travel for the first three months of being back in New Zealand.Being single in December to a loving full-time relationship, moving in together in my apartment for a few months, to then buying a house together, creating joint bank accounts and taking on this beautiful property – Josh’s first ever property ownership.Zero responsibility to having this mortgage, getting a puppy a week after moving in and five chickens the week after.Owning so little stuff to having to furnish a 369 sqm house with four bedrooms and two living rooms in just a few weeks. (People who visit us now say how it looks like we’ve lived here for years).Having a full on business period, getting it ready for my sabbatical and writing the Freedom Plan book manuscript which I finished on March 30th, to NOT working.Eternal summers traveling the world to my first ever autumn (fall) and winter. And that was probably the biggest kicker – I hate being cold.Thankfully I’m almost 2.5 years down the track and LOVING life, but it hasn’t been an easy journey and what surprised me most, was an event that happened in late October 2018.The untold story I’ve kept ..until now.Not long after a pretty successful book launch of the Freedom Plan (audio book coming out this month!!), I also relaunched my most successful course ever of the same name that, to date, netted me over US$500,000 in sales – which still blows my mind to this day.Except this time, I decided to totally redesign it and upgrade it to better align with my new book and to be more focused on how to work less through systems, outsourcing and clever sales funnels. It catered to an experienced business owner wanting more freedom – the folks I wanted to work with as I could see them experiencing burn out and overwhelm and I truly wanted to help them.Yet in doing so, I overlooked the majority of my community I’d lovingly built up over the years, who in reality, were still wanting to build their online business, learn how to earn more money and gain financial freedom. The launch result?I failed in an epic way. That hurt, a lot. I cried in the final days of launch and sat there in disbelief as literally nothing happened – at least that’s what it felt like.It caused me to doubt everything I thought I knew and was really good at, built up over nine years of business.I was in shock. I was numb. I felt like a fraud. The facts didn’t help either. I’d spent too much money, hired too many people and ended up handing over most of the things I’m great at, and got stuck with managing people, logistics and operations.Along with that, I had not listened to my intuition and how I felt energetically, and forged on regardless as I wanted to stay true to my word and launch this course I said I would – damn upholder in me!(Check out The Four Tendencies Quiz I talk about in my book to know what I’m referring to). When I did my launch analysis, which I do faithfully every time, it wasn’t as bad as I thought but the damage was done. My confidence was knocked and I wasn’t bouncing back like I normally do.Can you relate?I was desperately trying to find the lesson in the failure as a good entrepreneur will always do that, but I was taking it way too personally. After almost a decade it felt like I’d made a rookie error and it had cost me more than just money and a bruised ego.The truth was I wanted to quit my business.Deep down I was quite tired of my business. I’m sure I’m not alone when I admit this. For most of my business journey I’ve loved every aspect of my business, but there’s only so long one can continue to talk about the same thing all the time, before they don’t get a little bored, stifled or jaded.Despite continuing to learn I had gotten comfortable in my knowledge and expertise and was looking for a challenge. Most of the time I had managed to find that within and apply it to my journey and clients. But with all the life changed I’d experienced, and the time off I had taken from my business in 2017, I had never really found my flow again and I felt like I was holding onto something that I wasn’t passionate about anymore.Josh and I headed away on a break to sunny Gisborne that December, and had some long walks and talks on the beach to explore my options, how I was feeling and what would make me happy. While he had utter faith in me and felt it was just a minor setback, I wasn’t so sure. One of the options that had come up was taking on a contract to experience the things I was missing as an entrepreneur:Being part of a physical team (not just virtual)Not having to lead and manage everything all the timeExperiencing being part of someone else’s business and to learn from themHave a consistent income while I bounced backGetting into the city so I wasn’t so isolated out at our rural lifestyle propertyBe energized by the city vibe and socializing and;Getting some structure back in my dayWe used our own Life Pilot system and a Seasonal Dreaming session – which we do each quarter, to share our hopes and dreams across the eight areas of life we value most highly and by the end of that week away I had a plan.I’d looked at job websites, which I happen to know every great business owner will look at even when things are going well, and wasn’t impressed.Job descriptions made me yawn and sounded so formulaic or stifling and salaries seemed on the low end compared to what I know I can make in my business – but that wasn’t the key criteria – if I was referring to my criteria in the bullet points above. Then I saw a role of Learning Designer, that I didn’t realize existed, yet wasn’t dissimilar to what I had learned and applied in launching online courses and designing curriculum’s to educate people.I then sent possibly the worst email to a recruitment person ever that went like this:Dear BethVery keen to learn more about your freelance opportunities for learning designers.I’ve developed many curriculum’s for online courses in my own business and am known for making the complex simple and breaking things down into bite sized content that is practical and implementable.NatalieNaturally she asked for more details including my CV, which I then sat on for a while until I replied again, rather nonchalantly with this response:Hi BethI’ve realized I’m not going to create a CV anytime soon. I just know after 8 years of creating, building and running online courses, events and retreats that this is my sweetspot of what I do well.My LinkedIn profile is here www.linkedin.com/in/nataliesisson/Understand if this is not conventional for you NatalieThis resulted in her Googling me where everything I have ever done is publicly available to see – proof of what I’m capable of, calling me up and having a good chat. She saw an opportunity and my potential and took a chance on me.A week later I was having an informal coffee with the CEO even though there was no role for me and less than a week later I had a job offer and a start date in 10 days time!As you can imagine this wasn’t quite how I anticipated it happening but I took the leap.Strike forward almost five months and I can hand on heart say it’s been the best thing for me.Within Constraints Exists True FreedomMy working week went from working on my business anytime to having only Monday as my One Day a Week business day and Tuesday – Friday working at Inspire Group in the city including a remote day at home.In and around that – yes even some evenings and weekends, I did paid consulting for four gigs I’d inadvertently picked up since January after volunteering my time to help these purpose driven companies, plus working with a few coaching clients.I was truly living in the GIG Economy and am tapping into Future of Work by doing this.If you’re wondering, YES I was at capacity! For the first time in a decade, after preaching freedom and time off and experiencing that in droves, I was now energized by maximizing every hour I had – plus still having time out in the evenings and weekends AND training for triathlons. In fact I credit triathlon training for instilling confidence, focus, drive and momentum back into my personal life, along with a self belief and mindset I had been missing, that then overflowed into EVERY area of my life. It’s been remarkable.I also used all my own tools, systems, content calendar and 1 Page Biz Plan that I teach my clients and are featured in the Freedom Plan book on MYSELF and, low and behold, they worked a treat.I’m not going to lie commuting via train, car or bike an hour each way into town wasn’t entirely thrilling initially but I used that time to work on my business, contracts, or listen to audio books.I genuinely enjoy my job, the team and simply being in a different environment, which has allowed me to stretch myself, learn and grow plus take on an entirely different outlook and put myself in other peoples’ shoes. Then something magical started to happen.I got my mojo back by returning to being ME!A combination of fewer hours to work on my business meant I became ultra focused again and started enjoying every aspect of it.I cut my team down to just me and my Virtual Assistant so that I could get back to more of the doing, and experience what that felt like again. This brought back fond memories of my hustling days early on in my business and showed me all the things I had almost forgotten I knew how to do. I decided not to outsource anything for a few months and ‘get my hands dirty’ doing all the doing. This increased my love of all the things I missed or realized I’d lost touch with and things started picking up in my business.Revitalized energy shows in business and people pick up on it. Before long I was vlogging, podcasting and creating again and getting back to being Natalie, doing all the things I did so well when I started out in business.I did the analysis, I looked at what had worked all those years before and what I’d stopped doing or needed to stop doing to fully realign with who I was, how I could help people and how I wanted to show up in the world. Then in June I totally redesigned my own website home page with a brand new look and direction – even though this felt like I took three months to actually get it done.I was so proud as this is the first website I’ve fully designed by myself. Clean, clear and to the point. Let me know in the comments what you think!2019 Design2018 Design I did this by using the best and easiest WordPress theme I have ever come across, Thrive Architect. In fact I shot this vlog Thrive Architect – Your Must Have Website Builder Tool to show why it rocks and how to use it to redesign your website. As you can see by the live demo I give it was before I had learned how to use it fully and well before I’d finished the homepage design – but you’ll appreciate it.The messaging was clear as I’d been working/ procrastinating on it for months after many conversations with friends, peers and clients, and through a lot of internal introspection.I listened to my own advice I hammer home to clients all the time:1. Niche down2. Keep it simpleI have a tendency to want to offer the world and help people on all fronts and this time I looked back to what I have consistently been doing ALL throughout my career and business – seeing your potential and helping you to monetize it by getting paid to be YOU!While recording my Freedom Plan audiobook I had two major realizations:This book is full of gold nuggets that are damn useful (remember my previous knock to my confidence around the book launch time in October 2018…yeah it had the knock on effect that my book wasn’t good enough either). It would work really well to also pull out Chapter 6 on How to Monetise You and turn it into a teaser episode on my podcast, as well as to repurpose it into a standalone audio.I then went ahead and created my first new freebie (gift you give in return for a person’s email address and trust – AKA optin) in ages – and I’m damn proud of it.It’s this audio I created accompanied by my brand new amazing step by step guide.I emailed my community, some of which have been following my work since the beginning to share it with them and the response was awesome.More importantly close friends and peers personally messaged me to say this was completely me and so on point and that I had truly found my sweetspot – the intersection between what you’re good or great at, what you love doing and what people will pay you for and that aligns with your purpose.Ironic really given this is what I’ve been teaching in courses, my book, podcasts and interviews since…oh you know 2013!From this I have gotten so much clarity on exactly how I want to help YOU get paid to be YOU and thrive in the future of work.In fact, I tested my theory around this with a mini launch in June which went amazingly well and helped me appreciate that I was back on track, doing what I do best and how my mission was to help others turn their skills, knowledge and passions into multiple revenue streams. You’ll see this rolling out in the coming weeks and months, and I hope you’ll like what you see and get to experience it as a result. But first, let’s recap on the method I used to reinvent myself. Even if you can’t see the method in my madness, it’s all there:The ‘Natalie Sisson’ Reinvention Method Get super honest with yourself when you feel you’re not aligning with your intuition or your energy.Throw in an epic failure or an event that makes you stop, reflect and take action – if you really want to create change!Reflect back on all the things you know you love, are great at and have been paid well for in the past and compare them to where you’re at now.Assess the situation and look at what you need to STOP doing and START doing. This may mean taking on a side hustle, starting a new business, taking on a few gigs that help you upskill and challenge you.Talk to good friends, peers and mentors to get an outside perspective too.Take definitive steps to be the architect of your own life and design it around what you really want out of life.I hope there have been some key takeaways in here that you can learn from and apply to your own situation.Never give up.Always keep learning.Trust your gut.Listen to those who love and know you well.Embrace the lessons failure teaches you. Then pick yourself up and reinvent yourself! Adelaide hardcore machine Life Pilot have hit marketing gold with the film clip for their latest single 'Dark, Dark Goose'. The public reaction and acceptance of a basic premise of whose turn it is to take out the bin has seen the song (and rightfully so) go ballistic in terms of views and social media presence, with drummer Eli Green admitting even the band themselves were taken aback by its popularity."Yeah, it's a funny clip man", he laughed. "We were pretty nervous to see how people would respond to it but everything we've heard back has been really good. People are really enjoying the light-hearted take on things and we had a lot of fun making it".So much so that the thought of maybe being onto something that marketing departments can only dream of never entered their minds."We thought it would be something a little bit different", Green nodded, "and we were definitely trying to do something that wasn't the norm. We've seen the same sort of clip from so many different bands over the last couple of years - playing in a warehouse or a bedroom or something, and it's fine, we've done it before ourselves so we can't throw too much shade on it - but we just felt like this song is a light-hearted and groovy feeling kind of song even though the subject matter was a little heavier and we thought we could probably do something a little more creative. We're a funny group of guys, we're not dead serious all the time like a lot of people in metal bands often are and we thought let's roll with that, let's do something funny that showcases our humour a little bit more and might just be a little bit different".In the full interview Eli reveals what the song 'Dark, Dark Goose' is actually about, discusses the tour that is already underway and where to catch the band on their remaining dates, life on the road, the difficulties the band faced having to actually act in the film clip, new music and what direction it will take, the reason for releasing a succession of E.P's rather than a full album, just how much they put into their live shows and more.

My biggest passion in life has been pursuing my potential, and also seeing potential in others and helping them to recognize it for themselves and do something about it!And hence why the idea for a podcast show called UNTAPPED leapt into my mind in late December and simply wouldn’t let me go until I did something about it.I’m so curious about how to develop more potential, how do we live up to our potential and go beyond it.What even IS potential? Are there different types of it? Who are the foremost experts in human potential, in personal development and what can you and I learn from them? Then how can we apply this across all the areas of our lives that matter - relationships, health, wealth, career, personal growth, spirituality and contribution?I figure I may not be able to become the best in the world, but I can become the best version of myself.I feel like I’ve given this a great shot over the years, like in 2004 when I took myself on a 10 month journey to understand the weird world of body-sculpting and compete in my first, and only, competition. Yes that's really me on stage!Lots of weightlifting, learning, sacrifice and chicken and broccoli later, and there I was standing on stage, all bronzed in a tiny blue spangly bikini costume, holding a trophy for first place in the NZ Regional North Island Novice ‘Tall’ body-sculpting Championships.Weeks later, less than 10% body fat and hungry as, I was on stage competing at nationals, doing a routine to ‘What a feeling’ from flashdance.Or in 2007, when I trained with this fantastic group of women called the Sisterhood, and by 6am three time s a week, I was out to on the River Thames paddling with them...and for a few times Kate Middleton - well before she became royalty. In July that year we smashed a World Record dragon boating across the English Channel to France.Months later, I was in Brazil playing World Championship Beach Ultimate Frisbee with the Great Britain Women’s team...and somewhere in amongst all the training for that, hot sand under our feet, dancing, caipirinhas and too much sunshine, we won a gold medal! To 2012 when I decided that cycling 6,500km down the continent of Africa, from Nairobi, Kenya to Capetown, South Africa, was just something that sounded like fun and a great challenge.Incidents with hyenas in our camp, sightings of elephants running away from us, majestic giraffes on safari, 160km + days of cycling and a new nickname of Flatalie, for the most flat tyres in a given period...later - and that was the experience of a lifetime. And several more adventures and proud achievements in between, and it’s time for the next evolution. To untap my potential, to live up to my own high expectations...and go beyond. And to frankly explore a new level of being and living that stretches me to moments of pure joy, lots of discomfort and a whole lot of fun.Want to explore human potential with me?I regularly take on tasks that cause me to grow and stretch. I like being in over my head because it keeps me sharp and pushes me to give my full effort. But I fear, somewhere in the depths of 2018, I lost sight of that. I wasn’t learning enough, I wasn’t applying new things, I was instead, in some sort of unhelpful holding pattern, waiting for the airport control tower to give me the all clear to take off.I might even be so bold as to say, I was doing what Seth Godin told me I should never do...waiting for permission to be chosen, instead of choosing myself. So, I thought to myself, enough is enough. It’s a new year and I’ve got a fresh new perspective, while at the same time being back to my normal self - which is a self I typically quite like! Here are a few key ways I’m going to live up to and even beyond my potential throughout the course of my life, this podcast, my vlog and as I live write a book on this very topic, that I hope you can apply to.#1. Focus on today. Not tomorrow, not yesterday. But right now. It doesn’t matter whether yesterday was good or bad. It’s over. So don’t get stuck there. And don’t focus on the future too - sure you can think about your big goals and dreams, but more important is what one action can you take today that will make a difference in the future.Because you can influence what happens right now so give the present day your full attention - for want of sounding cliche, it’s called the present because it’s a gift.#2. Focus on my priorities. If I want to continue to untap my potential, I need to focus on my priorities and I can do this by protecting my time and my calendar. You and I both know that it’s all too easy to have your day dictated to you by someone else’s agenda, requests (some may say demands) or priorities. No more putting yourself second to others. If we want to be our best selves, in order to impact and help more people, we need to prioritize ourselves first.Be selective about what you do because you can’t do it all. We all have the same amount of time in the day, it’s not lack of time that’s the problem here, it’s lack of direction and focus.Choose your priorities and use your precious time to accomplish them.#3. Focus on my strengths. I know what I’m really good at. I know what I’m mediocre at. And I know what stuff really doesn’t light me up and feels like a drag.I could focus on improving the latter two, but I’d prefer to focus on improving the stuff I’m already good at, especially things I’m naturally good at, because those are the areas where I have the potential to become great, or even the ‘best’, if I put in the effort, time and training. In other words it’s a good use of my time to focus on my strengths.#4. Focus on my results. This one has been really apparent to me since I committed to training for triathlons in October 2018.I’m doing my best not to focus on the professional athlete’s times and results, and just focus on whether my personal results are improving. And even though I felt like I trained 5-6 days a week for two months for no real gains, it suddenly started showing up in my physique, in my strength and my performance. It’s easy to become tired or frustrated when you feel you’re working hard, putting in the effort and not seeing the payoff. But by sticking with it, measuring your progress and continuing to turn up and make small, consistent improvements, you will see the results and payoff.Of course you need to know what you’re working toward - what result or outcome do you want, what’s the purpose behind it, and what are the processes you’re going to take to achieve it…more on that in future episodes.By doing this you will stay focused on the big picture - visualizing where you are wanting to get to, without losing focus on the present - and what action you need to take today.#5. Focus on my positive habits.I just started listening to my friend Jame’s Clear’s new book Atomic Habits, and aside from it being brilliant, he’s made me realize something.I’ve been doing a lot of what he’s been doing his whole life too, creating and testing different processes to make me more effective, then showing up and doing them consistently, until they become habits - things I do unconsciously, that really work.As James states:“The effects of small habits compound over time. For example, if you can get just 1 percent better each day, you’ll end up with results that are nearly 37 times better after one year.”And this nugget:“Habits are not the only thing that influence your success, but they are probably the most important factor that is within your control.”Which leads me to….#6. Focus on what I can control.I realized late last year, when many things were turning to custard - predominantly in my business and therefore finances, that I’d been focusing too much on things that were out of my control. You can’t set goals or intentions that aren’t directly within your control - you just can’t, and not be disappointed if things don’t come off.So focus on what you can control, and set daily actions or weekly goals or monthly intentions to achieve those things that don’t have any external influence.I have Life Pilot - our life planning tool, to thank for helping me do that way more effectively - every day, week, month, quarter and beyond. For example I set a priority for how much time I dedicate to studying, painting or triathlon training and I schedule it in my calendar.I can’t, however, control for the weather, for my a friend being late, or for their being a power outage and therefore no wi-fi.So with these in mind, I bring you UNTAPPED. The podcast that will tap into how I can live up to my potential, and even go beyond it.I’ll be doing the research and experimenting on myself, to bring you what works, what doesn’t and what just feels good, fun, silly or outrageous. So are you with me? Hello and welcome to this special revisited episode of a conversation I had a year ago with Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin, titled "Intersectionality and The Age of the New Heroine.” This episode was one of my most impactful conversations and one that set me on my own heroine's journey to use my voice and leadership in new ways. So much has happened since that conversation. Sparked by that episode, and the horror of the Charlottesville Rally that took place a few weeks later, I launched the Women Podcasters in Solidarity Initiative and held a series of interviews on the subject of anti-racism and police brutality. I hosted an Impact Circle with other mothers where we made commitments to step into more action and raised dollars and awareness for the groundbreaking work of Mothers Against Police Brutality. I kept taking steps, one after the other.. Elizabeth invited me to speak about this work and my journey on a panel at her Gaia Women Lead Conference, and a week later, I witnessed the story of Laurie Valdez and other women who have lost loved ones to police brutality in the powerful play (M)others. The last few months brought me to a Father’s Day special episode with Assemblymember Rob Bonta on the podcast where we talked about his commitment to this issue and I began working with the play (M)others’ producer to bring the play to Sacramento ahead of key votes on critical police accountability bills in CA SB-1421 and AB-931. Along the way, messages from my conversation with Elizabeth have taken on deeper meaning, I've learned powerful lessons from incredible guides, and experienced signs and synchronicities that help me realize I’m moving forward on an aligned and purposeful path. So, it also felt right at this full circle moment to re-release the episode with a new introduction with reflections a year in, and a new dedication provided by one of my guides, activist, coach, speaker and now co-host of the new Families Fighting Mass Incarceration Podcast, Chandra Brooks. In this new introduction, I share five lessons I’ve learned over the last year as I moved into anti-racism and police accountability advocacy: Lesson #1 - Be willing to hold discomfort and a growth mindset Lesson #2 - Move from guilt into responsibility and action Lesson #3 - Raise your awareness and bear witness to the impact of police brutality Lesson #4 - Open yourself to signs and synchronicities on the journey Lesson #5 - Choose to answer the call If there is a cause that is calling to you, but you haven't yet answered it, consider this post your cosmic nudge to take your first few steps, find your guides, and trust that you can make a difference. And, if making a difference on the issue of police brutality is one that has been calling you, but you didn't know how you could help...there is an opportunity in CA RIGHT NOW that needs every soul who is willing... ✨To support bringing (M)others to Sacramento through contributing money to and sharing the GoFundMe page (linked below). Though we reached out initial fundraising goal, additional funds will enable the play’s producer to bring (M)others to other cities in CA. ✨To reach out to CA lawmakers to urge them to vote yes on AB 931 and SB 1421; and, ✨To urge lawmakers and those you know in Sacramento to attend the play on August 13th or August 16th and witness the powerful (M)others stories that need to be heard. Along this journey, I took a class called Diversity is an Asset with Desiree Adaway and Jessica Fish. One of the points that Desiree drives home at the end of every call is that none of us can truly be free until all of us are free. I hope these reflections and the episode to follow from Elizabeth inspires you to step from guilt and helplessness into action, into your own heroine’s journey, and to working toward freedom for all of us. Families Fighting Mass Incarceration Podcast Black, Brown & Political: Get Informed, Get Empowered and Change the Game! Original Show Notes for Episode 24: Intersectionality and the Age of the New Heroine with Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin Hello and welcome to this Episode #24 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast. I’m so honored to bring you this important and powerful conversation today with Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin, who through her daily Resistance Lives on Facebook, guides thousands of us with a voice of reason and optimism during the twists and turns of today’s political landscape. Known as a “celebrated career coach” and “fearless entrepreneur” Elizabeth, a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a J.D. from George Washington University Law School, transitioned from a fifteen year career as a Wall Street securities litigator and trial lawyer to found The Gaia Project for Women’s Leadership. The organization offers virtual and live programming that cultivates leaders from the ground up to to grow what they call “New Paradigm Women’s Leadership.” Elizabeth is also a mindful mother. No matter how full her life gets leading women around the globe or fighting for our democracy, she prioritizes bringing presence and focus to her two children, both under the age of 5. In this episode, we talk about how Elizabeth grew up in a very progressive community and had a strong intuition she would make a massive difference in the world. She attended her first protest when she was just 15 years old and now she’s leading a new awakening in activism – one that challenges her over 20,000 followers, of which I am one, to take daily political action, to truly listen to one another and to others with differing perspectives, and move forward as intersectional feminists, shoulder to shoulder. We also talk about the new heroine’s journey where the heroine brings back the lessons learned along the way, her words of wisdom for me as I set out to raise awareness and create space for uncomfortable but important conversations about race, how we can “bear witness” for those who have different experiences than our own, and Elizabeth’s challenge to all of us to use our voice for change. We packed so much depth and wisdom in this conversation, including the first ever lightning round exploration of the E.P.I.C. Guideposts. I look forward to hearing about the ways in which this episode will inspire you and invite you to join the Mother’s Quest Facebook Group to share with us and participate in a special Q & A on Thursday, August 3rd at 11:30 am PST with activist, leadership specialist, and former NAACP Vice President Chandra Brooks. I left this conversation feeling more inspired than ever myself to step up and into the role of the New Heroine during these times. Moved by my experience with Elizabeth, I commit to daily political action, to stretch myself to have brave conversations and use my voice for change, to truly listen to others, and to consciously cultivate this Mother’s Quest community I’m growing. Topics discussed in this episode: Elizabeth’s unique upbringing in progressive New Hope, Pennsylvania where 50% of the population was gay and there was a strong counter-culture. The necessity of letting go of our anger, being willing to listen, and leading from a place of healing to hold a vision for and create the holistic society we seek. The feminine energy and ongoing cyclical nature of the New Heroine’s Journey. The massive acceleration of purpose and mission brought about by our current political situation. Intersectionality within the Resistance and how women with privilege need to investigate our own internal biases so we can create a culture where everyone is safe regardless of our race, gender, sexual orientation or immigration status. Feedback for me on an initiative I’m exploring to raise awareness and funds for Black Lives Matter; the importance of listening and “bearing witness” for communities who have different experiences than ours. The profound moment of reconciliation at the Gaia Lead Conference that had everyone in tears. The importance of consciously cultivating the businesses, work-places and communities that represent all of us and how even the smallest gestures of reaching out can really make a difference. A lightning round version of how the E.P.I.C. guideposts are showing up in Elizabeth’s life and the lessons she’s learning along her heroic journey. This Week’s Challenge: Elizabeth asks us to think of ways we can stretch ourselves, outside of our comfort zone, to use our voice for good. And believe that we can change the world by making a difference even in one person’s life. I’m honored to share with you this episode with Renegade Mothering’s, Janelle Hanchett, mom to four ranging in age from 4 to 16, and author of the new memoir “I’m Just Happy to Be Here.” I reached out to Janelle after reading This episode introduction comes to you from my hotel balcony in San Miguel de Allende Mexico, where Chris and I are celebrating our 21st anniversary and our children are on a special trip with their grandparents. To make space for vacation, I decided to re-release two episodes and take a break from recording. Next week, at the one year mark of the Charlottesville Rally, I’ll share again my original conversation with Resistance Live’s Elizabeth Cronise McLaughlin along with a new introduction where I share what I’ve learned since answering the call to fight against police brutality. Please stay tuned for that episode and see the link in the show notes for how you can help this cause right now. For this week, when I thought about the first episode from past seasons I’d like to share again, the first introductory episode 00, titled “Planting the Seeds for Mother’s Quest,” came immediately to mind. It seemed right to revisit this episode, because this summer has been a time of reflecting on milestones, in my own personal development and learning, with my children, and in the development of Mother’s Quest since that first recording. In the last few months, I spoke about my journey on a panel at a conference for the first time, the podcast hit a big milestone, reaching over 20,000 downloads, with over 45 episodes, in 30 countries, with 7 podcast platforms, our Facebook group passed 500 members, and I stepped into new territory advocating for police accountability bills in the state of California. I completed the first virtual Mother’s Quest Circle pilot and the first Spark Your E.P.I.C. life one-on-one program and launched a new blog series called “Tales of our Humanity.” My children have experienced tremendous growth too, one graduating from preschool and the other middle school, and each taking on new adventures that have stretched them in different ways. Seeds I planted when I recorded this episode have taken root in amazing ways. And, at the same time, the original intention to use my voice, to create space for powerful conversation, to build community and to grow in a reciprocal relationship with my children have stayed constant. I’m appreciating the power of marking a new beginning, enjoying the journey, staying true to a vision, and allowing the original seeds of intent to flourish. I hope in listening to this episode again, or perhaps discovering it for the first time, you’ll feel grounded in the original messages of Mother’s Quest and also inspired by what has been possible since….so you can plant some new seeds of your own and trust that they too will grow. Episode 00: Planting Seeds for Mother’s Quest – An Introduction: Welcome to this introductory episode of the Mother’s Quest podcast. This solocast will give you a preview of what to expect in this twelve week season and reveal the stories behind Mother’s Quest E.P.I.C. framework, the podcast logo and the mantra that closes each show. This solocast, and the podcast that it officially kicks off, is a birthday present to myself. This milestone birthday, on December 1st, 2016, and the reflective and transformative experiences in the months preceding it, inspired me to start my quest and this podcast. For the first time in my life, I have the desire to create and share publicly something deeply personal; to use and share my voice; to commit to something I am calling my E.P.I.C. life; and to build a community to support me and other mothers along the way. In the episodes that will follow, I interview other mothers to learn their words of wisdom. But this episode is an opportunity for me to use my own voice and share some lessons I’ve learned since the moment I decided to cross the threshold and begin living my E.P.I.C. life. Topics Discussed in this Episode: How attending a creative workshop hosted by Elizabeth Gilbert last year began a process of self-reflection and helped me to start dreaming The mission behind Mother’s Quest, and what it means to live an E.P.I.C. life. How two birds that got trapped inside my home became the metaphor that sparked my journey. Kids are always listening to what we say, to the “seeds” that we plant and nurture in them. And, we are in a reciprocal relationship with our children where we both learn and grow together. It’s the journey and not the destination that matters the most. Mother’s Quest Tales of our Humanity #2 of 52 On the heels of attending Kate Schatz’ launch event for her new book “RAD GIRLS CAN,” and in the wake of the tragic loss of life and promise of Nia Simmons, I’m honored to share a series of stories about an incredible 7 year-old girl, Havana, written by her mother Bethany Edwards. Along with the support of her parents, Havana is already proving there are so many things she CAN do to make a difference, defying stereotypes based on the color of her skin and her age, at every turn. Havana sees the potential in herself and in her peers. She said it best at a recent event where she spoke “Every single girl in this room is a warrior. And every girl here can change the world.” Here’s to Havana, here’s to her mother Bethany, here’s to our humanity. I’m honored to share with you this episode with Renegade Mothering’s, Janelle Hanchett, mom to four ranging in age from 4 to 16, and author of the new memoir “I’m Just Happy to Be Here.” I reached out to Janelle after reading her raw and honest blog post about raising teenagers. In my experience raising my own teenage son, I saw myself in Janelle’s words, and shared her post with every friend I know parenting teenagers. I’ve since become a fan of Janelle’s wildly popular blog. She started Renegade Mothering in 2011, when after reunifying with her husband and children after years battling addiction, she settled into sobriety, suddenly “woke up” amid the daily life of working and raising her children, and felt overwhelmed by the feeling of erasure in motherhood. To determine if the rest of the mothering world was crazy or she was, she started writing after her kids went to bed and invited readers to join her. Writing irreverently about the humorous and darker sides of motherhood, and eventually sharing her own recovery from alcoholism, she attracted an audience of hundreds of thousands of readers, and in May 2018 published her first book, the powerful memoir “I’m Just Happy to Be Here.” The theme of being honest and real, owning our truths, seeing ourselves and therefore being able to truly see our children runs through this powerful conversation and carries forward into the challenge that Janelle gives us. She invites us to create space to reflect on, name, and be honest with ourselves about the parts of motherhood that we just don’t like. I added to her challenge that I would create a gathering with local moms this summer and give ourselves permission to name and also share these truths with one another. Photo and update on how that goes to come. I hope you’ll say “yes” to claiming space for yourself, owning your truths, finding connection by doing this with others, and that you’ll share your photos and your experience with us. I loved this conversation with Janelle, but admit that after finishing her book last night, I have so many more questions for her. She’s agreed to do a follow-up video conversation, that you’re invited to, in the month of August. So, I encourage you to order Janelle’s book, “I’m Just Happy to Be Here,” read it, join the Mother’s Quest group so you’ll get notified when our conversation is scheduled and come with your questions. Looking forward to claiming space, uncovering and owning more of our truths together. This episode dedicated by Jen Simon, Writer and Mom: Jen’s biggest secret went viral — although she was a mom, she was addicted to prescriptions pills. After her explosive Washington Post essay, she has been contacted by hundreds of women all saying the same thing: this was my story too. Jen has written about her addiction for Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Babble, and The TODAY Show. She was recently a guest on The TODAY Show and also filmed a video for their website. In addition to writing about addiction, Jen writes about motherhood, postpartum depression, relationships, pop culture, and feminism. She has contributed to Yahoo, Slate, Woman’s Day, and more than two dozen other publications. Janelle shares about her childhood being raised by her own renegade mother. We talk about her early years of marriage… parenting, studying, working, and sinking more deeply into alcoholism in the midst of the massive identity shift of motherhood. In sobriety, the awakening she experienced of being erased by motherhood, the need to claim space for herself, and how that led to the creation of her blog, Renegade Mothering. Janelle’s quest to realize herself as a human constantly seeking truth and seeing how she can offer the world something of meaning Having children with a broad age difference and how Janelle engages her children through the little in-between moments. How Janelle strives to “see” her children for who they uniquely are, remembering she can’t save them, while also teaching them, and remembering that they are not the justification for her existence. Janelle shares the impact that her writing has had for her, her children, the mothers who read her blog, and families of those who have experienced addiction and recovery. Her passion for deconstructing patriarchy and the false expectations society has for mothers, letting go of guilt and shame and of being a sanctimonious mother How Janelle invests in herself, her writing, her spirituality and all the connections that help her stay sober The strong and powerful friendships in her life and a special group of friends that participate in a weekly rotating dinner practice Our realization that our children really are watching us. They are aware of and shaped by us more than we think. I added to her challenge that I would create a gathering with local moms this summer and give ourselves permission to name and also share these truths with one another. Photo and update on how that goes to come. You’re invited to do the same and share your photos and truths in the Mother’s Quest Facebook Group. Announcements: Join the Mother’s Quest Community As I finished Janelle’s book, book with tears in my eyes, I was struck by the power of owning our truths, seeing ourselves in our whole humanity, the good and the bad, and the connection that’s possible when we share those truths with one another. I resonated with a particular passage in her book where she writes about finding her voice and her Renegade Mothering community. She says “When I found my voice, I didn’t find answers–I found a purpose for every moment I had lived. I found power in every blackened room in my mind, every fear, every sad parent, every futile word and nightmare memory. Because it led me to you, to the place where we are the same, to the place where words draw a line from my bones to yours, and you look at me and say, “I know,” and I look back at you, thinking “Well I’ll be damned. I guess we’ve been here together all along.” That’s how I feel about finding my voice through this podcast, about owning the questions I get to explore here with truth-seekers like Janelle, and in realizing, when you listen and engage with me, that we’re not alone in our pursuit. I’m honored to bring you this Episode #45 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, a conversation I shared first a little over a year ago, when my own son Ryan marked a big milestone in his life, his 13th birthday and the approach of his bar mitzvah. Recently, Ryan crossed another threshold, his middle school graduation, and in the weeks before this new milestone, he wrote a speech to capture the experiences and lessons learned from a challenging spring semester. Though Ryan didn’t have the opportunity to address his class at graduation, I believe the messages of his speech, about moving from feelings of depression and isolation to curiosity and connection, could impact an even bigger audience through the power of podcasting. So, I decided to bring you his speech, in his voice, followed by our original podcast conversation from a year ago. I’m thankful to Ryan for giving me permission to share his speech with this community and for the gift of the conversation we had on the podcast a year ago. I hope the common themes and the honest messages from last year to now, of overcoming challenges, building trust, finding connection, and not letting fear stop you from living a YOLO life, reach all who need it. This episode dedicated by Monisha Vasa: This Milestone Reflections Revisited Episode also warranted, in my mind, a new dedication, from someone with a unique perspective on the topics Ryan explores. I found who I was looking for in Monisha Vasa, a psychiatrist, mother, and writer who dedicated the episode to her courageous patients. Learn more about Monisha’s work at www.monishavasa.com and www.mindful-healing.com. YOLO (You Only Live Once) and other Milestone Reflections with Ryan Neale Original Episode Show Notes As Ryan approached his bar mitzvah, a year ago in April 2017, becoming a “Jewish adult” and entering his teens, we decided we would spend his thirteenth birthday together, going on a “milestone hike” ‘and then recording an episode of the podcast at a recording studio in San Francisco. It was a magical day of reflection, revelations for both of us, and a lot of laughter. I’m honored to bring highlights of all of that to you through this episode. You’ll hear Ryan share eloquently and honestly about his appreciation for the support that helped him conquer his developmental delays, how his own fears manifest in his life today, and how, in his next chapter, he wants to trust more and move through his fear. Because, he says, he wants to live with a YOLO (You Only Live Once) mindset. Ryan reflects on snapshot moments from his life, about his deep love for his younger brother, his experience finding a group of friends and a school program where he could thrive, receiving the academic achievement award, and the moments he hopes he’ll be able to look back on with pride at the next milestone. Ryan also gets a turn to ask me his own questions and give me feedback. I had an opportunity to share the biggest lesson my mother gave me, to always appreciate every stage of life you’re in when you’re in it, and acknowledge what I wish I could change about myself. I also heard Ryan reflect back that in being “a little selfish” in creating Mother’s Quest I’ve given him so much more than if I only focused on my children. There’s a game we play with Erik Newton (whose studio we recorded in) as our game show host, a lot of laughter and some comical out-takes that you’ll want to stick around for at the very end. I felt so blessed to create this experience with Ryan and to share it with you. I take with me the importance of marking these rites of passage thoughtfully with our children, what a privilege it is to be witness to the development of another human being as a mother, a reminder of how powerfully our children see and know us and help us grow, and what fun it can be to create new experiences together. Ryan and I will never forget how we spent his thirteenth birthday together. We hope you’ll leave this episode inspired to mark a milestone in your life, with your children, and make some life-long memories of your own. Topics discussed in this episode: Our meaningful and magical milestone hike through Laurelwood Park How you cannot see yourself fully through the mirror but can through your loved ones Life happens fast, appreciate every aspect of your life as you’re in it because before you know it you’ll be on to the next Take life in small steps and the snapshot moments that Ryan most remembers from his 13 years Ryan’s love for his brother Jacob and what Ryan said the day Jacob was born The impact living my E.P.I.C. life has had on Ryan How things that are scary can at the same time be beautiful and Ryan’s commitment not to let his fears stop him from living his YOLO (You Only Live Once) life The pact Ryan and I made to help us with our biggest area of growth, our management of time Resources mentioned in this episode: Headstart, a special program for preschool aged children from low-income communities that provides access to early childhood education The GATE Program (Gifted And Talented Education Program) national links and background information. Ryan participates in our local school district’s program. Divergent Series by Veronica Roth “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky Erik Newton, The Together Show Sports Illustrated Kid Reporter, a unique program Ryan has applied to which gives selected children ages 10 – 14 an opportunity to write and broadcast about sports UCLA Bruin Woods where I was a counselor in college and where we all go to “camp” each summer as a family Announcements: Milestone Rite of Passage Coaching Session The focus of today’s episode is about honoring the milestones in our lives. I’ve learned that when we’re moving through these periods of transition, it can be so powerful to slow down and reflect on our experience. I’m excited to share this second special episode this month of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, in honor of Father’s Day, with someone I’ve known and admired for over a decade through our connection at Alternatives in Action, California Assemblymember Rob Bonta. This month of June has been a time to focus on the amazing fathers in our lives. It’s also been primary election month in many communities. And when I thought about who I could interview who is both an amazing father and committed to a life of public service, Rob immediately came to mind. When we pressed record on this interview, Rob had just been elected for a fourth term to the California State Assembly’s 18th District, where he represents the cities of Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro and became, in 2012, the first Filipino American legislator in the 165-year history of California. Prior to this, Rob utilized his law degree from Yale to serve as Deputy City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, and served as the Chair of the City of Alameda’s Economic Development Commission and as board president for the Social Service Human Relations before becoming Vice Mayor of the City of Alameda, the position he held as he ran for the State Assembly. We started our conversation reflecting on Rob’s childhood and how his father, who stood with Dr. Martin Luther King in the Civil Rights Movement, and his mother, a long-time leader in the Filipino social justice movement, taught him to understand injustice and the importance of joining the struggle to empower vulnerable communities. We reflect on some E.P.I.C. snapshot moments from Rob’s childhood. Growing up in a trailer just a few hundred yards from César Chávez’s home, Rob watched closely as his parents organized Filipino and Mexican American farm workers, infusing his formative years with first-hand experience of one of the greatest peaceful social, racial, and economic justice movements of all time. Then, we delve into how the E.P.I.C. guideposts show up in Rob’s life, how he makes space for each of his four children and allows them to step into leadership and activism on their own, his passionate and purposeful work and the causes he’s championing as an Assemblyman, from early childhood education to affordable housing, the deep connection to his community that fulfills and restores him, and the family relationships that are everything to him, especially the one with his wife Mialisa, who he met in college and has been married to for 21 years. We also had the opportunity to talk about AB-931 and SB-1421, two bills aimed at reducing instances of police brutality and increasing police accountability. Moving through some discomfort I felt in the moment, I asked and Rob agreed to work toward getting these bills passed, to talk with the founders of Mothers Against Police Brutality for policy insight, and to explore bringing a powerful play called (M)others to Sacramento to shine light on the real stories of families who’ve lost loved ones to police violence. At the end, Rob challenged me and all of us to hold him and other lawmakers accountable to the issues and causes that matter most to us. In a heart-wrenching week when our government has been separating children from their families at the border, Rob’s message and call to action to hold our leaders accountable resonates deeply. I left the conversation with renewed commitment to do so, modeling engagement, not apathy, for my children and saying “yes” to creating my own family’s legacy of activism and leadership. How Rob’s parents fled the Philippines for the security of the family before the Martial Law era of Ferdinand Marcos The way that Rob and his wife, Mialisa, make time for each child and share with their kids what they love and care The many causes Rob is championing in his role as Assemblymember. Rob’s position on the gravity of solving the problem of police violence in our country, an exploration of two new California bills aimed at reducing police violence, and the requests I made of Rob to go further in his commitment. How being in his home community restores and fulfills Rob and how his love of soccer, since the days that he served as captain of Yale’s Soccer team, continues to be a way that Rob invests in his own well-being. Rob and Mialisa’s love story, how they continue staying together, and the extended family that supports them Rob’s awareness that this interview provided an opportunity to “Get off of the dance floor and onto the balcony” to survey the big picture and reflect What Rob really thinks is the enemy of democracy and his challenge for all of us This Week’s Challenge: Rob believes that the enemy of strong communities and Democracy is apathy. What an honor it is to bring you this episode with my own father as one of two I’m having with men on the podcast this month in honor of Father’s Day. Two things sparked my interest in having my father on the show now…first, a desire to feel more connected to my grandmother Molla, my father’s mother, who passed away years before I was born from pancreatic cancer. I wanted to hear from my Dad about his experience of his mother, how she shaped him, and the ways he notices her spirit living on in us today. Related to this, I recently went to a workshop to learn about uncovering our family ancestry and at that workshop they discussed the power of oral histories. My Dad is a storyteller and I wanted to use this amazing platform to capture his stories and life lessons, for me, for my children and the Mother’s Quest Community. The episode is an exploration of my father’s E.P.I.C. life, how his mother’s passion as a voice and elocution teacher shaped him into the powerful speaker and human being he is today, the moment he first saw my mom when she was just 11 years old, how he built a career and a family, and a love of golf to help him cope with the effects of Type 1 Diabetes. And, how he views love of family and the pursuit of fate as a theme that runs through it all. This episode’s dedication was shared by Vanessa Couto, an astrologist who considers fate and what’s written “in the stars” for us as part of her exploration and practice. Vanessa honored her father Guido with this dedication and reflected on the ways that fate, legacy, and character help us live a life of purpose. I loved reflecting on these same elements of my father’s life in this conversation. I wasn’t surprised that there were moments that made my Dad and I laugh and cry during along the way. But, I was surprised by the insights that emerged…about the ways in which my grandmother and my father’s qualities live in me. I’ve known I’m much like my mother, but it wasn’t until the end of this conversation that I realized that the “seeker” in me, the one who is always on a quest, comes from my father. My Dad believes that fate play a role in all of our lives, but that we must actively pursue it to fully realize it. Our challenge this month is to reflect on the moments in our lives when we chose to pursue our fate and what happened as a result. Also, to notice and seize the new opportunities and possibilities that call us to take action today in our E.P.I.C. lives. In honor of Father’s Day, I’d like to add one more challenge that we didn’t discuss in the interview but came to me as I wrote this introduction. Seek out the father or father figures in your life to ask them about and record the stories, lessons and insights they have to pass along to this and future generations. I promise you’ll learn something powerful about yourself and how to more fully live your E.P.I.C. life. **Stick around till the end for some light and funny bloopers from the interview. This episode dedicated by: Vanessa Couto – Artist, Astrologer, and Teacher. Visit her website at www.vanessacouto.com and connect on Facebook Topics Discussed in this Episode: My father’s view on fate and how it has been a thread weaving through his whole E.P.I.C. life The ways my grandmother shaped my father and the thing she said to him that sealed his fate for a life he loved in California How fate brought my father and mother together, from his first site of her receiving a drama lesson from his mother, to summers as children and teens in a bungalow colony, to 50 plus years of marriage. Where the seeds for his playful nature and love for his children and grandchildren were planted early in his life How he pursued a career in a business he built, the people he met and helped along the way, and the importance of being a person of integrity The impact of Type 1 Diabetes and stress on his life and how his love of golf became his remedy Some funny stories of crazy things that happened to him, several involving the Wall Street Journal, and one that you may want to turn the volume down on if your children are listening with you. The favorite toasts passed down to him by his mother This Week’s Challenge: There are three challenges this week: One from me, to look back on our lives, notice the moments when we chose to seek our fate, the impact that has had on us, and to share it with our family members One from my father to continue to seek out our fate, taking action on opportunities even when we’re not certain what might come from it And one that emerged from my son Ryan, to share this episode with the fathers or father figures in your life, let them know how you appreciate them, and explore and record their stories and lessons learned. Four consecutive weeks of one-on-one coaching using a signature process I’ve been facilitating in my circles this spring I’m looking for no more than FOUR clients to experience an intensive, one-one-one, four-week coaching process in the month of June. Could this be you? Do you feel like you’re on the threshold of a powerful shift in your life? Are you ready to spark new perspectives, new ways of being, and some E.P.I.C. action of your own? Have you wanted to participate in the Mother’s Quest Circle but the timing wasn’t right or you prefer to work one-on-one? We’ve been having an amazing experience in the Mother’s Quest Virtual Circle and I want to bring the same practices and flow to work one-on-one in a more focused period of time…over one month instead of three. Interested? I’d love to schedule a time to check-in about what’s happening in your life and how this could support you. Sign up for a discovery session at this link or message me some times that could work for you if you don’t see something that fits your schedule. https://mothersquest.as.me/discoverysession I’d like to identify the four individuals this week, get scheduled and start next week! Welcome to episode 12 of The Deconstructed Drummer Podcast, which is a conversation with Eli Green, who's an Adelaide based drummer and teacher. Eli has been on my radar for a little while now, but it wasn't until I started doing my research that I found exactly how versatile he is on the kit. From throwing down with Life Pilot to playing delicate emotional tunes with Hen I've been blown away at how Eli is able to stay authentic and serve the music with all of the acts he plays with. We cover a lot of ground, but there's a definite thread of authenticity and deliberateness in music and life. I had a blast, and I think you will too.
