In this episode of Clinician's Corner, Molly and Clarissa explore the often-overlooked realities of long-term recovery. While many recovery programs focus on the acute phases and early abstinence, sustainable recovery demands much more—it asks us to renovate our lives. Drawing from the latest research—including insights from Harvard's Recovery Research Institute and their own published study on food addiction outcomes—they break down the average 17-year journey toward stable remission and emphasize that recovery is a process, not a finish line.

Sean is joined by author of 'Understanding J. Bruce Ismay: The True Story of the Man They Called The Coward of Titanic', Clifford Ismay, to look into J. Bruce Ismay.Bruce Ismay was the Chairman of The White Star Line, who became infamous for getting into a lifeboat and surviving the sinking of the Titanic. But are things as one-sided as people think?Listen in to this riveting discussion as Cliff and Sean bring their own insights into the debate. They discuss:-Thomas Henry Ismay and his relationship with his son, Bruce.-Parental expectations.-Bruce Ismay's introverted personality and how it ended up working against the public's perception of him, both before and after the Titanic tragedy.-Myths around Bruce and Captain Smith.-The impact of TV and film depictions of real-life people on public memory.-The cultural impact of Titanic (1997).-The "ram-shackle" evacuation of Titanic.-How surprisingly quickly the attacks on Ismay's character began.-The bravery of Titanic's Engineers and Postmen.Raised Questions:-Who did Cliff really want to write a book about?-Did you know that Bruce's Dad was a world-renowned businessman and self-made man?-Are we all a product of our parents?-Did Bruce's façade alienate people around him?-Has Bruce Ismay been portrayed factually and fairly?-What was the last song played by Titanic's band?-Can we ever corroborate Ismay's version of events?-Do the Public and the Press love a villain when a disaster occurs?-Does the sacrifice of wider Titanic's crew get forgotten?Correction:-It was Lifeboat number 13, which almost had Lifeboat number 15 dropped on it.-Enclosed A Deck Promenade* not "Enclosed Boat Deck" as Sean put it.Further Reading:-Understanding J. On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, I dive into a powerful parable about “lifeboats” and how we often miss the help that's right in front of us. I share an old story about a guy who refuses to be rescued during a flood, because he keeps waiting for God to save him.Only to later discover that help came to him multiple times in multiple forms, but he simply refused to see it or accept it. The big lessons here?Sometimes we get so stuck in our own ways of thinking - that we miss incredible opportunities for growth, change and support. I talk about how we limit ourselves by expecting help and helpers to look a certain way - whether that's from a specific type of person, professional, program, or process. We can block our own healing by being stubborn and narrow-minded and insisting that things look a certain way.I explain how my approach as a Spiritual Mentor isn't about "fixing" people (cause' they're not broken) - but rather that I integrate tools and techniques that support your Mind, Body, and Spirit to create real, sustainable transformations. My bottom line: Stay curious and open. The universe sends help in wild and unexpected ways - through a random text, a book that falls off a shelf, or a conversation with someone you'd least expect. We don't want to get so caught up in our own stories that we miss our rescue boat.Sometimes the lifeboat is right in front of you, and all you need to do is climb aboard!KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Help can come in unexpected forms.• Be open to receiving it differently than you imagined.• Internal wisdom is just as important as external guidance.• Getting stuck in old patterns and beliefs.• Spiritual Mentorship is not about “fixing” you.• Providing new tools and shifting perspectives.• You've gotta' be “Open for Business”.• Healing is holistic – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.• We're all potential “lifeboats” for each other.• The Nest - Group Mentoring Program BIO:Karen Kenney is a certified Spiritual Mentor, Writer, Integrative Change Worker, Coach and Hypnotist. Nate Williams and the Dangerous Life Team talk about some of the classic moral dilemmas and how they would handle them. If Nazis came to your door and you were hiding Jews in your attic, what would you say? If a loved one was tied up on a track, and some amount of people were on the other track, at what point would you allow the trolley to head towards that person? Finally, is cannibalism allowed in extreme circumstances?
Do You Expect Us To Talk? returns with more Hitchcock. Set entirely on a small lifeboat in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. After a German U-boat torpedoes their ship, a group of American and British survivors—including a wealthy journalist, a working-class crewman, a nurse, and a radio operator—find themselves adrift. Tensions rise when they rescue a German sailor, who may know more about their survival than he lets on.As the stranded passengers struggle against hunger, exhaustion, and each other, the film explores themes of morality, trust, and human resilience. Join Becca, Dave and Chris as we discuss if the film political themes give more meat on the bones to this then the eye, does the leg really had to go, was it really symapetic to the Nazi character and the best scene with a fish ever. I think that the first thing artists have to do is to start telling the truth. You know, just like climate change five or six years ago, you just didn't really want to talk about it. You got shunned in polite company if you talked about it. Now we have the c word, right? We've got collapse. But the conversation hasn't started yet. And I think just broadly speaking, the artistic community… The best of the artistic community, has always been on the edge, right? The social edge. Pushing, complaining, challenging, resisting…Robert R. JanesMy conversation with archaeologist and former museum director and CEO Robert (Bob) R. Janes (author of Museums and Societal Collapse : The Museum as Lifeboat) and his son, famer and educator Peter Janes (author of Fake Plants Never Die - an eclectic technical instruction manual - Essays on pre-apocalyptic adaptation) at TreeEater Farm and Nursery on Denman Island, September 16, 2024. Janes, with nearly five decades in the museum business, reflects on his early archaeological work and a transformative experience living with Dene families near the Arctic Circle. In this bonus episode, I share my favorite Suspense shows starring William Bendix - the lovable lug of The Life of Riley and the Oscar-nominated character actor of Lifeboat, The Blue Dahlia, and more. 2024 marked the 200th Anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, an organisation funded wholly by voluntary contributions, keeping our seas safe since 1824. In this episode we visit the volunteers and boat crews who are based at the Blackpool Lifeboat Station, one of the busiest in the country. On their open day in the summer of 2024 we find out what makes them tick and the motivation behind why they do what they do. Willing to risk their own lives in order to save others. We also weave the heroic story of Grace Darling into the podcast, whose actions assisting her father William saved many lives, in a daring rescue that became national news in the 19th century. If you wish, you can donate to the RNLI here. It's your donation that really does go to saving lives.

This is a different episode for us, but it's one we felt compelled to make.On 19th December 1981 a dramatic rescue played out on the English coast, involving a stricken cargo ship being driven towards a rocky shore by a storm. It's an important story of courage, skill, sacrifice and decisions that ultimately led to tragedy.Tonight is the anniversary of that incident, and in this episode we pull together the original radio transmissions to tell the story of the crews of the Union Star and the Solomon Browne.LinksBBC documentary on YouTubeBBC Sounds documentaryPenlee: The Loss of a Lifeboat - by Michael Sagar-Fenton
Series: Signs & GloryTitle: How do we receive the life Jesus promises?Scripture: John 1:6-13Bottom line: We receive the life Jesus promises by responding to the light, believing Jesus is who he says he is and will do all he's promised to do.INTRODUCTIONCONTEXTSERMON OUTLINECONCLUSIONNOTESOUTLINESQUESTIONS TO CONSIDER DISCUSSION QUESTIONSMAIN REFERENCES USEDMy opening prayer: Lord God, help us grow to be and do like Jesus, while abiding in him and leading others to do the same. INTRODUCTIONYes, we're talking about life eternal. But eternal life isn't worth much if it's not also amazing. Joyful; peaceful; purposeful; powerful; life-giving. But it all starts with having life in the first place. We are born into a dark world. We need rescuing from that dark world. And when you're life hangs in the balance, rescue is all you can think of. The Lifeboat and the Drowning SailorIn 1982, Steven Callahan was stranded in the Atlantic Ocean after his sailboat sank. For 76 days, he drifted in a small inflatable raft, battling hunger, thirst, and exposure. One day, he saw a rescue ship approaching, but it couldn't immediately spot him. Desperate, he used a flare and a mirror to signal his location. Finally, the rescuers spotted him and pulled him to safety. • Connection: The rescue ship was there, fully capable of saving him, but Steven had to signal his willingness to be rescued. He had to acknowledge his need and respond to the rescuers' efforts. In the same way, Jesus has come into the world as the Light and the source of life, but we must respond to Him by receiving and believing.Steve recognized the rescue ship. God gave him the ability to see his potential rescue.Steve responded to the presence of this ship by sending up the flare and by using the mirror. Steve relied on the ship to do what he himself could not do--rescue him from his life and death situation. His belief that the ship could rescue him was seen in his willingness to acknowledge his need for a rescuer and that it could actually happen. This is what John will be talking about today in this passage. -ChatGPT helped me with thisCONTEXTThis series is called Signs & Glory. Zooming out, this book of the Bible by John the Apostle or Disciple is written that we might believe that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God and that by believing have life in his name. That's the point of this gospel account of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ.Zooming in further, we see this gospel account divided into 2 major sections. The first 12 chapters will show us the 7 signs of belief along with many others truths that illustrate and justify the teachings of Jesus. Chapters 13-20 will show us the glory of God on full display. We'll see the light, life and love of God through his divine AND human son, Jesus of Nazareth during the last week of his life. The first few weeks of our series, we zoom into one of the most important and profound passages in the Bible: The Prologue, John 1:1-18. This tells us a lot about who Jesus is and all he's promised to do.Today we'll focus on verses 6-13. We'll be introduced to John, but not the John who likely wrote this gospel. Instead, John the Baptizer, the greatest prophet to ever live, according to Jesus. John does what he calls each of us to do. Be a witness. Testify to the light to a dark world. What do you do when someone is ready to receive Jesus? Do you know how to lead someone to walk in the light with Jesus? John and John will tell us how today!SERMON Read and comment on John 1:6-13. Connecting the theology of the passage to practical application:Jesus says in John 8:12, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." In this passage, we see that gives us the opportunity this Christmas season to recognize the light (Jesus), maybe for the first time, respond to the light (by grace through faith), maybe for the first time, and then, truly relying on the light (power of God) to deliver on his promise stated in John 8:12. 1. Recognize the Light (vv. 6–9) • John the Baptist came to point others to Jesus, the true Light. Like him, we must clearly recognize that Jesus is the only source of life and truth in a world of spiritual darkness. • Application: Examine your own life—are you seeking truth and guidance from the Light of Christ, or relying on other “false lights” such as human wisdom, tradition, or personal effort?2. Respond to the Light (vv. 10–12) • 2 Reponses: 1) The world rejected Jesus because it failed to know Him. 2) But to those who receive Him and believe, He offers the incredible gift of becoming children of God. • Application: Respond to Jesus personally through faith. Have you truly “received” Christ or are you still keeping Him at a distance? If you have, are you living like children of light fleshing out the power of God each day?Don't be duped believing that you're a Christian becauseYou have the right lineage or heritage. My dad is a pastor or I am a Jew. These will not save you.You have decided to be a good person and to count on your good, moral behavior to save you. Even if your standard is the best in this world, you could never attain perfection. But the standard is perfection. "Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect." -JesusYou have decided that your kids will become Christians so you're going to do all the "right things" and believe that that is enough. Growing up in the Church is a great start. And it gives your kids every opportunity to hear the gospel and respond by grace through faith. However, it's no substitute for you showing and telling it yourself in your home where they see who you really are. Sending them to Christian school can be good. But if what they hear there contradicts with what they see at home, they will become disillusioned and perhaps do the opposite of what you think they need. The bottom line is there is no salvation with out God's power. And there's not activating God's power without genuine, saving faith on the person's part. Just like these baptisms signify today!3. Rely on God's Light (Power) (v. 13) • Becoming a child of God is not about heritage, human effort, or others' influence—it is a supernatural work of God's grace. Our salvation and spiritual growth depend on Him. • Application: Let's humbly rely on God for salvation, spiritual renewal, and power in our daily walk. Note: Help on this outline came from ChatGPT in the writing of this section. CONCLUSIONHere's another true story you can use:The Rescue of the Chilean MinersIn 2010, 33 miners were trapped 2,300 feet underground in a collapsed mine in Chile. For 69 days, they endured intense heat, darkness, and dwindling supplies. Rescuers worked tirelessly to drill an escape tunnel, eventually sending down a small capsule to bring the miners to safety. When the capsule arrived, each miner had to make a choice: climb in and trust the rescuers, or remain in the darkness. All 33 chose to step into the capsule, and every one of them was safely brought to the surface. • Connection: The rescuers provided the way to life, but the miners had to trust and respond. They couldn't save themselves, but they had to step into the capsule to be rescued. Similarly, Jesus has made the way to eternal life, but we must respond by believing in Him and receiving the life He offers.1. The Capsule Was Cramped and Claustrophobic 2. The Ascent Was Long and Unpredictable3. Physical and Emotional Strain4. No Other Way Out-ChatGPTBottom line: We receive the life Jesus promises by responding to the light, believing Jesus' is who he says he is and will do all he's promised to do.What about you?Peter puts it all in perspective in his first sermon:““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”” Acts 2:36-39 NIVInvitationHow do we respond? Answer 2 questions:Take out a card or piece of paper right now. Write down the answer to these questions: What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.Lord's Supper, 1 Cor 11:23-26 is good passage. Also, say something like, "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again." (past, present, and future)PrayNOTESYes, the rescue of the Chilean miners involved significant risks, especially for those stepping into the capsule. Here's a more detailed look at what the miners faced: 1. The Capsule Was Cramped and Claustrophobic • The capsule, called the Phoenix, was only 21 inches wide and barely large enough for one person to stand inside. For miners who had been trapped in darkness and isolation for over two months, stepping into such a confined space required tremendous mental strength. • Parallel: Faith in Christ often requires stepping out of fear and into trust, even when the way forward feels narrow or uncertain (cf. Matthew 7:13-14). 2. The Ascent Was Long and Unpredictable • The journey to the surface took about 15-20 minutes per miner, and there were risks of the capsule getting stuck or equipment failing during the ascent. The miners knew there were no guarantees, yet they chose to trust the rescuers. • Parallel: Trusting Jesus means placing your life in His hands, even when you can't control the process or fully see the outcome. 3. Physical and Emotional Strain • Many miners struggled with physical weakness and psychological trauma after weeks of confinement. Some feared they might panic during the ascent, but they still stepped into the capsule. • Parallel: Coming to Christ involves admitting our weakness and need for rescue, trusting that He will carry us through despite our brokenness (cf. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10). 4. No Other Way Out • The capsule was the only way to escape the mine. If a miner chose to remain underground, they would have faced certain death. Accepting the risks of the capsule was their only hope for life. • Parallel: Jesus is the only way to eternal life (John 14:6). Just as the miners had no alternative but to trust the capsule, we have no alternative but to trust Christ for salvation.OUTLINESOutline from Willmington's Outline Bible OUTLINE JOHN 1John begins his Gospel by talking about the deity of Christ, then describes the ministry of John the Baptist. SERIES 3 EPISODE 67: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: "No one in this world, so far as I know—and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me—has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby. The mistake that is made always runs the other way. Because the plain people are able to speak and understand, and even, in many cases, to read and write, it is assumed that they have ideas in their heads, and an appetite for more. This assumption is a folly." H.L. Mencken (1926). Nice of Hispanic males to vote for the guy who will deport all their relatives and friends and namesakes and when they run out, deport them. On Wednesdays, we share our thoughts on a newer entertainment property. Currently, that's Only Murders in the Building. This week's episode gave us a deeper dive into the real (?) story of the Westies and how they formed their tight-knit, card-playing, ham-eating group. We also finally met Helga, the voice on the ham radio, and realized that Mabel is the mother hen of the podcasting trio. Mentioned: OMITB recaps at Vulture.Next week, we'll discuss S4 E9 of Only Murders in the Building, “Escape from Planet Klongo.” We'll be back tomorrow with our weekly roundup.
Hey hey hey, my people!Time for another peep through our (smeared) window into the mind behind 'Succession', Jesse Armstrong. On Wednesdays, we share our thoughts on a newer entertainment property. Currently, that's Only Murders in the Building. Terri felt personally attacked by this episode, as it flaunted the plot holes of her beloved season 1 right in her face. Ten people are stuck on a lifeboat after their ship sank. It will be weeks before anyone finds them, and they're out of food. They've heard this story before, so they decide to turn to cannibalism sooner rather than later. They agree to draw lots to determine the victim. Just as the first person is reaching for the lots, Albert shouts out “WAIT LET'S ALL KILL AND EAT BOB!” They agree to do this instead of drawing lots. This is obvious, right? For nine out of ten people, it's a better deal. For nine out of ten people, it brings their chance of death from 1/10 to 0. Bob's against it, of course, but he's outvoted. The nine others overpower Bob and eat him. Something about this surprises me. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/lifeboat-games-and-backscratchers
