It sounds unbelievable, but many modern cruise ships appear to have fewer lifeboats than the Titanic.

Harvard Law professor Lawrence Lessig joined Bradley for a live event last month at P&T Knitwear, co-hosted by Teddy Himler of Optimist Ventures, about the two most fundamental threats to American democracy and what to do about them. Lessig, founder of EqualCitizens.US and author of numerous books on copyright, technology, and political corruption, makes a surprisingly hopeful case that Super PACs can and will be ended without overturning Citizens United. Bradley makes his argument for mobile voting as the only scalable fix for low-turnout primaries that boost extremists in both parties. The two agree on a particular culprit — an engagement-based media economy that profits from turning Americans into "ignorant people who hate each other." Lessig offers the Titanic as a useful metaphor: If there's "a gash in the hull," don't waste your time clearing ice off the deck. A Clare lifeboat station is warning people heading to the coast over the summer of the dangers of changing wind direction. The RNLI, Irish Coast Guard and Water Safety Ireland are coming together ahead of 'World Drowning Prevention Day' to urge people to take precautions before going in the water for the rest of the season. A total of 37 lives have been lost in Irish waters so far this year. Kilrush RNLI Lifeboat Press Officer Charlie Glynn says even good weather comes with risks.

People experiencing homelessness in Astoria will have to abide by new camping codes going into effect Wednesday, July 15. The changes to the camping codes make it illegal for people to camp knowingly on public property if they have access to “reasonable shelter,” which will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The code also provides exemptions depending on someone’s circumstances.At the same time, Clatsop County budget and funding formula changes  mean one of the city’s low-barrier shelters, LiFEBoat, will be seeing major cuts that could lead to a reduction in services and even closure. Osarch Orak is the executive director of the shelter. He joins us to share more on what these camping code changes mean for the nonprofit and the people they serve.

The Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland, and the RNLI have issued a joint statement urging people to exercise caution near the water this Easter Bank Holiday Weekend. It comes as a Status Yellow wind warning comes into effect at 2 o'clock this afternoon and expires at 11 tonight. On January 22, 1873, the British passenger ship Northfleet was anchored in the English Channel, bound for Tasmania, when she was suddenly struck by another vessel in the darkness. Carrying more than 300 people, many of them emigrants, the ship sank within minutes. Lifeboats failed, distress signals went unanswered, and passengers were thrown into icy waters just miles from shore. More than 300 lives were lost, making the Northfleet shipwreck one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters of the 19th century.
