Send us a textWhat happens when the people who shape our cities, schools, and homes are missing from the public conversation about our built environment? Award-winning architect Lisa Webb joins us to unpack architecture's growing crisis of relevance in New Zealand.Following her thought-provoking piece in the NZIA Bulletin, Lisa shares her concerns about architects becoming increasingly sidelined in discussions about housing, climate resilience, and community building. "We have a lack of voice, a lack of mandate, and a lack of mana," she observes, pointing to recent political attacks on the profession that went largely unchallenged. We explore the disconnect between how architects communicate their value (often through beautiful images) versus what clients and communities truly value about architectural services. As one colleague noted, "Pretty pictures are scrollable but have no real sense of the agency the architect brought to bear." This insight leads us to discuss meaningful alternatives – sharing client testimonials, documenting transformed lives, and telling the stories behind successful projects. The conversation reveals a profession at a crossroads: highly trained professionals with unique holistic oversight capabilities who nonetheless struggle to assert their relevance. We discuss how smaller practices in particular face challenges being heard, while questioning whether the profession's traditional reluctance toward marketing has become self-defeating in today's media landscape.Lisa challenges listeners to move beyond waiting for someone else to advocate for architecture. Whether through greater engagement with the NZIA, strategic marketing, or simply telling better stories about what architects actually do, the path forward requires collective action from a profession that designs not just buildings, but lives.Key Links:- https://www.studiolwa.co.nz/- https://www.nzia.co.nz/member-area/resources/news/2025/architecture-in-crisis-why-our-relevance-is-fading/- https://www.nzia.co.nz/member-area/resources/news/2025/a-response-to-architecture-in-crisis/Chapters:0:00 - Introduction to Lisa Webb6:00 - The Problem with Architectural Advocacy16:40 - Lost Voices in the Housing Crisis26:30 - Architecture as Service vs. Product35:25 - Marketing Architecture: Breaking Taboos43:45 - Finding Power in the Profession54:30 - Collective Action and Moving ForwardFollow us on @designpriciplespod on Instagram. If you wish to contact us hit our DMs or email us on info@designprinciplespod.com

There are 36 million pets in the UK, which doesn't include fish and other aquatics, and the cost of owning one can add up.One of the biggest bills a pet owner can face is the price of taking their animal to the vet. The Competition and Markets Authority launched an investigation earlier this year into whether people are paying too much and whether they are getting information about treatment options. It says the 'unprecedented response' it's had shows the strength of feeling. Aside from that, there's the general cost of care like food and heating bills. This week Felicity Hannah is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Mullineaux, dog owner, vet and current president of the British Veterinary Association and by Lisa Webb, dog and cat owner and senior lawyer at the consumer organisation Which? We also hear from an award winning dog breeder, a cat and rabbit rescue centre and even head to a dog Christmas party - although we must point out, a pet is for life, not just for the festive season.Presenter: Felicity Hannah Producer: Sarah Rogers Editor: Jess Quayle(This episode was first broadcast on Saturday the 28th of December 2024).

Inflation has dropped to 6.7% but that doesn't mean our bills will be coming down anytime soon. Best known as the founder of Wine, Women & Well-Being with 28 branches across Canada (and counting), she is an educator, author, entrepreneur, mother, and fierce advocate for women everywhere. Welcome to the launch of Season 6! Jill Devine wanted this week’s guest to be part of the launch of Season 6 because behind the scenes, Lisa Webb approached Jill about being a part of the Supermom Shoutout. Lisa is the Owner & Creator of Addy’s Way! She started her jewelry business in 2010 while living in Houston, Texas. Through the years, and two moves, Addy's Way has continued to grow and change to stay with the current trends. In 2020, they added a new channel to the AW brand, AW Apparel. Lisa asked Jill if she could customize a t-shirt for the Supermoms that get a shout out with the Supermom Shoutout. Being a mom is hard work and Lisa thought these moms needed a visual to remind them they are seen and supported. In this episode, Lisa and Jill talked in detail about the importance of supporting and lifting women up, as well as: *Having someone in your life a season ahead of you *Being a part of the “Sandwich Generation” *Doing the best you can *Choosing to have a good attitude *Listening to what God is teaching and telling you IG: @addysway FB: https://www.facebook.com/addyswayjewelry Jill would like to acknowledge and recognize the hard work moms put in on the daily. It can be a thankless job at times, and Jill wants these moms to know their worth, so she created the Supermom Shoutout, brought to you by Addy’s Way. Each recipient will receive a custom designed Supermom t-shirt from Addy’s Way, in addition to the Shoutout. This week’s Supermom Shoutout goes to Eryn of O’Fallon, MO. Her friend, Lisa, nominated her and said: It’s my privilege to nominate my amazing friend, Eryn, for the Supermom Shoutout! Eryn is a single mom to Donovan, Giavanna, Cimone & Devereux. I admire how hard she works to provide for her babies. Eryn works all day and runs all night from practice to practice keeping her kids involved in the activities they love. She’s an amazing mom that deserves all the shout outs and recognition she can get! Eryn - YOU are seen and YOU are supported! To nominate a Supermom (or you can nominate yourself) email hello@jilldevine.com. Submit the name of the Supermom, where they're from, and a brief description as to why Jill should shout out this particular Supermom. Building a strong identity and self-confidence is probably the central piece of what is often at the origin of expat partners challenges when moving from a country to another. In the episode 51 (https://tandemnomads.com/51) , we talked a lot about the general challenges of defining home and our identity when living on the move and adapting to so many different cultures. In the particular case of expat spouses, identity has a lot to do with finding on top of that the balance between being a parent, and particularly a mom, dedicating time for the family while trying to pursue our own dreams, aspirations, careers and building a strong self-confidence. In this episode, I have chosen some extracts that explain really well where this challenge comes from, but also some great insights and important advice to turn this challenge into great opportunities. We start with Evelyn Simpson, an ex banker, expat partner and co-founder of the coaching company, www.tandemnomads.com/23 (www.tandemnomads.com/23) Kristin Louise Duncombe explains why she insists on using the term "trailing" and how she managed to build her self-confidence over the years, even if the first years she really felt that she was indeed just "trailing" along. Kristin is a psychotherapist and the author of “ www.tandemnomads.com/44 (https://tandemnomads.com/tn44-a-journey-from-deep-existential-crisis-to-personal-and-professional-fulfillment-part-2/) Rashmi Aggarwala Zimburg is an ex business consultant, an expat partner and a coach. She shares in this extract some of her challenges giving up her career goals, building her identity while taking care of her family and how she managed to reinvent herself and her skills along the way. She shares even more details about it on www.tandemnomads.com/31 (https://tandemnomads.com/tn31-rashmi-a-zimburg-expat-partner-in-tokyo-japan/) Lisa Webb is the blogger of www.tandemnomads.com/33 (https://tandemnomads.com/tn33-lisa-webb-expat-partner-in-indonesia/) After this episode, Lisa gave me the opportunity and extreme honor of writing a chapter of the anthology Once Upon an Expat (https://www.amazon.com/Once-Upon-Expat-Lisa-Webb-ebook/dp/B01FP365GO) . In this chapter, that I called Lost and Found Between Homeless and Homefull, I write about my journey defining home. Lisa Webb grew up in Canada. After university she became a teacher for 8 years, then the assistant principal of an elementary school. Her husband, who is also Canadian was one day offered a job in Paris. So they packed up their lives in Canada and moved to France. After a year in Paris, they were moved to the South of France, where they lived for 4 years and had two French-born children. During that time Lisa began writing, and created the blog Canadian Expat Mom (http://www.canadianexpatmom.com) , where she shares her experiences on expat life and travel. This past year she and her family moved from France to Indonesia. While Lisa and her family have been adjusting to this new culture, she also published the first book in her first children's book series, ' The Kids Who Travel the World (http://www.amazon.com/Kids-Who-Travel-World-Paris/dp/6027333502/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457145747&sr=8-1&keywords=%27The+Kids+Who+Travel+the+World) ' that quickly landed on Amazon's Bestseller list for children's book. She is now working on publishing 'Once Upon An Expat' a series of stories from expats around the world. I am very honored that Lisa invited me to share my story on her coming book, “Once Upon An Expat”.
