Playwright Boni B. Alvarez stopped by Playwright's Spotlight during the run of his historic play Mix-Mix: The Filipino Adventures of a German Jewish Boy. In such, we discuss approaching historical figures and events and flashbacks on stage. We also discuss his approach to writing "in threads,"  being married to material, finding momentum, and addressing and giving feedback. We also explore Julliard, his start in playwriting, lessons in playwriting and having a style. We also touch on what is craft, finding an arc, and writing and finding a good antagonist. It's a fascinating episode that explore the evolvement of writing and revision, "taking every single note," making changes and change "requests," as well as content warnings.  As always, I hope you walk away with some beautiful insight into the craft of playwriting. Now, sit back and get to work.Boni B. Alvarez is a Los Angeles-based playwright-actor and faculty member at the USC School of Dramatic Arts. My biggest motivation has always been love.-Gilda Radner Penguin Rep Theatre, under the leadership of founding artistic director Joe Brancato and executive director Andrew M. Horn, presents the world premiere of Gene & Gilda by Cary Gitter, directed by Mr. Brancato, from August 4 through August 27 in Stony Point, New York. Beloved entertainers Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner come to vivid life in a hilarious and heartfelt new play from Penguin playwright-in-residence Gitter, author of The Sabbath Girl and The Virtuous Life of Joseph Andrews, which were previously presented at Penguin. Described by Mr. Brancato as an “intimate portrait of two comic legends in love -- and the lives they led beyond the laughter,” the play follows the famous couple from their first meeting through their personal and professional ups and downs, all the way to their poignant farewell. The cast under Mr. Brancato's direction includes Jordan Kai Burnett as Gilda and Jonathan Randell Silver as Gene. The production is designed by Christopher Fleming (set), Gregory Gale (costumes), Jamie Roderick (lights), Joel Abbott (sound), and Buffy Cardoza (props). Michael Palmer is production stage manager. My special guest to kick off this week is Jordan Kai Burnett! Jordan Kai Burnett recently made her Las Vegas debut starring as the Emcee for Channing Tatum's Magic Mike Live which played at both the Hard Rock and legendary Sahara Hotel & Casino. She was featured in the same role for Finding Magic Mike on HBOMAX. She starred opposite Jonah Platt in the West Coast premiere of the musical Found with the IAMA Theater Company at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, directed by Tony Nominee Moritz Von Stuelpnagel. She originated the role as ‘Scissorhands' in the Los Angeles hit “Scissorhands: the musical," created by Bradley Bredeweg.

This Sunday, John Fox continues our series in the book of Ecclesiastes titled “I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For” with a sermon called “Why Do They Do That?” on Ecclesiastes 8:11–17. In this passage, Kohelet says he sees injustice around him and tells us to enjoy life. How do we live faithfully and joyfully before God in the presence of that injustice and when we don't understand? What are the injustices in our community? What do we struggle to understand? How are we to live with one another and be joyful witnesses in our community to our faith in the face of those things? We will explore Kohelet's thoughts on those questions. As with so many sectors of arts and entertainment, especially those that rely on live audiences, the pandemic has rocked the live theatre industry. The yearlong lockdown due to the coronavirus has forced live theatres and theatre companies to get creative and find ways to continue to put shows on virtually. But finally, it appears there may be some light at the end of the tunnel.  Earlier this month, the California Department of Public Health released new guidelines for a number of industries, live theatre among them. It’s not a full return to normal yet -- according to the state’s criteria, live performances indoors cannot resume until counties are no longer in the purple, red, orange or yellow tiers. However, counties in the orange tier can start putting on live, outdoor performances at 20 percent capacity for regional attendees who live within 120 miles of the theatre. Today, as part of our weeklong series exploring how different sectors of the arts and entertainment industry are starting back up, we’ll talk about how local theatres and theatre companies are preparing to return to live, in person performances when circumstances allow. GUESTS: Meghan Pressman, managing director and CEO of Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles Gil Cates, Jr., executive director of the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood Ben Guillory, co-founder, CEO and producing artistic director at The Robey Theatre Company, an African American theatre arts organization located at The Los Angeles Theatre Center in Downtown Los Angeles Paula Tomei, managing director of South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa

Brand and business storytelling is all of the rage today. And for good reason. It works. But while most storytelling experts tell you to tell stories, these six content marketing and communications leaders will show you how. This week's show previews the latest storytelling tips and techniques you’ll learn from leading brand and business storytellers who are coming together for STORYco, a FREE storytelling conference on October 25, 2018 at the historic downtown Los Angeles Theatre Center. This is your opportunity to receive the most invaluable free advice you can get on the art and science of storytelling to grow your brand, your personal influence, your people and your career. So you might ask, why would all of these speakers appear at STORYco for free and share their wisdom? Well, because we’re all trying out new material, filled with the latest insights on brand, business and leadership storytelling, and we’re recording our sessions for our own promotional purposes. But you receive the greatest benefit. Because not only will you be among the first people privy to these insights during the conference, but you'll also get to connect with each of the speakers at the reception. So on today’s show, and at STORYco, you will hear from… The hilarious KATHY KLOTZ-GUEST of Keeping it Human and author of  Stop Boring Me! How to Create Kick-Ass Content, Products and Ideas Through the Power of Improv. The business-savvy & witty CARRIE WILKERSON, author of The Barefoot Executive who challenges you to see what is possible professionally & personally through hard-hitting truth, humor and high-performance strategies. One of the Godfathers of content marketing, ROBERT ROSE, the Founder and Chief Troublemaker for The Content Advisory, the education and consulting group for the Content Marketing Institute. Robert ran Content Marketing World in Cleveland last month. MIKE GANINO, a company culture and engagement expert and author of Company Culture for Dummies. For 20 years, Mike has been on the front lines of creating radical cultures that help create bottom-line results, beloved brands, and engaging employee experiences. You'll learn from the incomparable LESLIE EHM of Combustion who joins us with her own kind of swagger. Leslie is a supreme evangelist of creativity and collaboration who will do just about anything (and has) to unleash her participants’ potential. She'll do that for you at STORYco. DANIEL LEMIN, co-author of the recently released book on word of mouth marketing, Talk Triggers, and the puppet master of STORYco who corraled all of us speakers, offers current insights on how to build word of mouth marketing strategies in your business. I’ll also be presenting at STORYco. I’ll show you how to use the three most powerful words in business storytelling: And, But & Therefore. Because the hardest thing about storytelling is getting your story straight. Learn how to clarify your story, amplify your impact and simplify your life with these three words that are the DNA of story. Unfortunately, KAREN WICKRE, who rounds out this talented group of presenters, couldn’t make it on today’s show. But you’ll want to catch her live in L.A. on October 25 when she shows you how to take the "work" out of networking. Which reminds me: in addition to storytelling tips and techniques that you can immediately apply in your business, STORYco is going to be a one-of-a-kind networking event in downtown L.A., but only for the select few who reserve their seat today. When they’re gone, they’re gone. So let’s hear from the marvelous story mavens of STORYco right now on the Business of Story podcast. Our inaugural episode of the Policy at the Playhouse podcast features a discussion the Latino Theater Company’s production of Rules of Seconds at the Los Angeles Theatre Center – presented in association with The Temblors. Set in Boston around 1855, the play, written by John Pollono, centers on a confrontation between a wealthy business man and a young man, resulting in weapons drawn at dawn.  In our discussion of the world premiere of John Pollono's Rules of Seconds, we discuss how a period piece can and should reflect the present, how growing up in Boston brought aspects of toxic masculinity to the forefront of John's thinking about the world and how he explores those issues in his writing. We touch on many themes in this conversation about the play, including gender norms, immigration, the role of rules in civil society, and the notion of blind allegiance to those rules/norms. Can breaking rules be the better option?  Sponsored by the USC Bedrosian Center http://bedrosian.usc.edu/  Check out our other podcasts at: http://bedrosian.usc.edu/podcasts/  Recorded at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy http://priceschool.usc.edu/
