Howdy, y'all, and welcome to The Cyber Ranch Podcast!  Our guest is Luke Jennings, VP of Research & Development at Push Security, former Chief Researcher at Countercept, Principle Security Consultant at MWR…  He's been around the industry.  Luke is passionate about tracking the evolution of attacks – how are the bad guys morphing and changing their game in response to our new defenses, and more importantly, new technologies that we use in the first place.  Luke, thank you so much for coming on down to the ‘Ranch! Questions Allan asks Luke: What is the difference between traditional attacks and the new SaaS cyber kill chain? Where is the new perimeter in a fully SaaS/remote company? Is it cloud identities? What is it we're actually protecting in a fully SaaS/remote company? The data landscape is very distributed now… You've mentioned that certain protective technologies are so good that they have inspired new methods of attack. This is the classic arms race metaphor.  What drove the bad guys into attacking SaaS-native companies? Walk me through the modern kill chain in a SaaS-native company. I'm thinking in terms of recon, access, lateral, escalation – the old model has changed, has it not? Let's pick specific attacks from the matrix and review them Sponsored by our good friends at Push Security. Check then out at: https://pushsecurity.com/ranch

Luke Jennings is a 2023 American Star Farmer Finalist.  He is also the state president for Ohio FFA, serving his second term as a state officer in the Buckeye State. I first interviewed Luke in 2021 at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.  The media center for the convention is in the media offices at Lucas Oil Field where the Indianapolis Colts play, so we sat down in a room over looking the entire domed stadium, the huge FFA stage and the football field below. Luke went up on the big stage three times that convention, including one time as a National Proficiency Finalist.  I thought I was surely catching this young man at the heights of his FFA career.  I didn't think this because I didn't think him capable, but he had accomplished so much already it was just a natural thought.  However, in the following school year he became an Ohio State Officer, in May of 2023 he was elected for a second term - this time as state president and then in July he was selected as a finalist for American Star Farmer! I couldn't be more proud of what this young man has done and is now doing, and it is my thrill to have him back on the show.

‘I would like to be remembered as a good writer and a good man . . . Writers are observers. We are natural lookers, watchers . . . it seems to me quite wonderful that I have so long been able to make a living from something I love so much.' So wrote the writer, editor and famed chronicler of rural life Ronald Blythe for the Mail on Sunday in 2004. That Ronald (or Ronnie, as he preferred to be known), who died aged 100 in early 2023, will be remembered as a good writer is irrefutable. Many Slightly Foxed listeners will know and love not only Akenfield – his bestselling 1969 portrait of a fictionalized East Anglian village – and the ‘Word from Wormingford' column for the Church Times but also his unparalleled collection of short stories, poems, histories, novels and essays and, most recently, his year-long diary published as Next to Nature, which celebrates the slow perpetual turn of the farming year, the liturgical calendar and the rhythms of village life. In this episode Ronnie's fellow writers and friends, Julia Blackburn and his biographer Ian Collins, lead us down the rough-hewn track to the ancient yeoman's cottage he inherited from the artist John Nash and into the nooks and crannies of his private world, tracing a life well lived and well written. We meet the changeling boy obsessed with books and nature and the self-taught youth whose good looks and charisma caused queues at the Colchester Library reference desk where he worked until he was discovered by the painter Christine Nash. It was she, recognizing his rare talent, who insisted he leave his job to pursue writing fulltime. We track Ronnie's rich literary life path through his friends' personal recollections, touching on tales of mid-winter meetings with E. M. Forster and an unlikely tryst with Patricia Highsmith. We muse on his spirituality and sexuality, his great love for life and his deep connection to the rural world with all its harshness and all its beauty, before heading for Bottengoms Farm where we hear how this great man and great writer saw out his last days in the company of good books and close friends. For our book-lovers' day out we head to the quintessential English cottage of Ronnie's hero, the poet and keen gardener John Clare. And, to finish, a round-up of book recommendations including another East Anglian delight in Adrian Bell's A Countryman's Spring Notebook, an unusual fishing memoir by the writer of the Killing Eve series that's about much more than just fishing, and the intricately plotted revenge tale No Name by Wilkie Collins, one of Ronnie's favourite writers. Summary: Lights, Camera, Action! In our case, sometimes the action is steamy and other times involves more knives and screaming. Devin and Holly discuss books that take place on set today, and agree that the pizzazz and magic of making films or TV shows add a fun dimension to books across genres. Devin highlighted the focus for romance authors on the “everyman” character getting their spotlight - readers won't relate as well to famous people being famously in love. Holly appreciated how sets can callow for a great locked room environment, working with a finite group of cast and crew.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (4:09): Holly discussed Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth, a 640-page Literary Gothic Horror novel referred to as a “sapphic romp” set in a cursed New England boarding school. The book oscillates between 1902 and the experience of students at the Brookhants School for Girls and the 2015 film production of a “Blair Witch”-style retelling of the haunting events that closed the school over a century before. Holly's key takeaways were: The writing is dark, funny, and incisive; it vibrates with creepy environmental and natural horror elements (lots of wasps). Danforth drew upon stories surrounding films such as The Omen, The Exorcist, and Poltergeist as inspiration for her plotlines.  Danforth wanted her novel to focus on explicitly queer characters vs. queer coding and queer erasure. Holly appreciated the range of representation through the novel and how each character relates to their own sexuality vs. just a single perspective on how to be queer or lesbian.  The novel pivots between two storylines, which led to some confusion for the reader and ultimately a lack of cohesion. The book is quite a brick, and could probably have been edited down a bit to resolve some of the storyline pivoting.  The Heart (19:05): Devin discussed You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria, book one in the Primas of Power series. If you love Jane the Virgin or the Kiss Quotient, you'll have a blast with this steamy telenovela-focused novel. Jasmine Lin Rodriguez and Ashton Suárez are paired up as the protagonists of a new telenovela filmed in New York City, “Carmen in Charge.” The problem? Jasmine is giving up on romance after a very public breakup and Ashton is fighting for his last shot at success in the United States before he'd forgo his Hollywood dreams - and they have zero chemistry on screen. Devin's key takeaways were: Jasmine and Ashton as protagonists each have their own very authentic motivations that drive the plot and ensure nothing feels contrived; they need this show to succeed, they need to have on-screen chemistry, so why not run lines and scenes together after work to get it right? *Devin winks aggressively*  Daria put heavy emphasis on an all Latinx cast and crew and representation in Hollywood. She also included an intimacy coordinator for the show which highlighted the importance of consent both in private and for the telenovela.  As is the case with most romances, the fallout of this novel hinges on a miscommunication and it left Devin feeling a little underserved - Aston is almost 40 and it would have been nice to see him use his words a bit better like a real adult. Hot On the Shelf (37:27): Holly: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas Devin: Killing Eve Series by Luke Jennings What's Making Our Hearts Race (41:42): Holly: Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes on Audiobook Devin: Shrinking on Apple TV   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Today's interview is special.  I rarely get to interview a student, or any guest for that matter, face to face.  However, I had accidentally scheduled an interview with Luke Jennings for when he would be at the National FFA Convention and I would be traveling to the convention.  So, we decided to do the interview in person in Indianapolis.  My studio for this interview happened to be the press box way above the field at Lucas Oil Stadium, so it was quite a different experience for me. Luke came up for the interview after walking across the big stage at the convention for the third time!  He and his team had just been recognized for the performance in the parliamentary procedure competition.  However, how I had first learned of Luke was due to his nomination for a national proficiency award. “The book is better.”   Just like us over here at BLB, if you are a bibliophile, odds are you have said this before. Sometimes this statement is well-warranted, but often there is a power to TV adaptations through which the original material translates far better than it would to a movie. Book adaptations such as Game of Thrones, Handmaid’s Tale, and more recently The Queen’s Gambit, have all come to prominence achieving worldwide recognition. In episode 19 of BLB, we chat about book adaptations that become binge worthy television. Can they act as strong ambassadors for books in general? What about the fear of doing the material justice? Many fans are cautious about books being adapted for the small screen, but sometimes they get it right. BLB chats about the times it really worked, and the times it really worked until it didn’t. Did you develop an obsession with chess during lockdown after binge watching The Queen’s Gambit miniseries? After intermission we go into a deep discussion of the book by Walter Tevis, and what we think of the show that followed. It probably goes without saying for this episode, but be cautious dear listeners, spoilers ahead!   After tuning in, let us know if there are adaptations we neglected to mention in this episode and if you agree or disagree with our analysis of The Queen’s Gambit.
