Nelson and Winnie Mandela were one of the most famous couples of the 20th century. Their relationship became a powerful symbol of the freedom struggle in apartheid South Africa, but it was also dogged by infidelity, violence, Nelson's long imprisonment and the oppressive weight of the regime they fought against. In Jonny Steinberg's recent book, Winnie & Nelson: Portrait of a Marriage, the South African writer chronicles a tragic love story that was both personal and deeply political. The book has recently been shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize and Rob Attar caught up with Jonny to find out more.

# Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump struck a little-reported deal agreeable to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The established border of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights will be honored as Syrian forces backed by Hezbollah have as of today routed anti-Assad forces out of the area of Syria that borders Israel. That added to the boldness of the Netanyahu-led government, which has now voted in the Israeli Parliament on a law that defines Israel as the homeland of Jews with Hebrew as the official language and that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. The law rescinded Arabic as one of Israels official language. The move was met with alarm by Israels Arab population, which says the measure is racist and sidelines them. It was also opposed by J Street, a prominent Jewish lobby in the U.S. and by the American Jewish Committee, which says the law shows that Israel is not democratic. To give us background and analysis on the Trump-Putin deal as well as the Jewish state law, we are joined by Middle East expert Phyllis Bennis. And yesterday, July 18, marked the birthday of Nelson Mandela who was born in 1918 in South Africa. It was a public holiday in South Africa and was marked by celebrations, large and small, of Mandelas life. The one most reported was the speech given by former U.S. President Barack Obama given at a stadium before thousands of people. As with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the U.S., there is a struggle going on over the true legacy of Mandela as well as attempts to sanitize him. Our guest is Coumba Toure, a coordinator of Africans Rising for Peace, Justice and Dignity. She is based in Dakar Senegal. For our Weekly Earth Watch segment, Oglala Lakota activist, writer and educator Corine Fairbanks joins us. She is a lead organizer for the American Indian Movement in Ohio and a spokesperson for Native American rights. She has been involved in protests against ICE.

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS Black History Month 2018 began with the city of Philadelphia commemorating it's first Super Bowl championship - and promptly being chided by many news outlets for mobs of alleged Eagles's fans marauding and looting in the streets in honor of the football triumph. Automobile titan Dodge was also admonished for exploiting the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in a Super Bowl advertisement peddling vehicles. The area of entertainment dominated the week with the release of Marvel's Black Panther. Much like the 2017 smash Get Out, the portrayal of black "superheroes" who use their time and energy in pursuit of justice is being promoted globally and critically acclaimed. Speaking of a "superhero," PBS released a superb documentary on South African freedom fighter Winnie Mandela. The film details her philosophy on counter-violence, her decades of service to counter-racism, and the strategic and international efforts Whites made to neutralize and dominate the Mandelas, all black people. Apartheid-style violence was on display in Gus's Seattle, Washington, where a black male was mauled with a baseball bat by White Terrorists. The Race Soldiers were allegedly motivated to violence because the black male was rumored to be sexually involved with a White Woman.

This week I speak with global CEO Whisperer, Anthony Howard, author of the book Humanise: Why Human-Centred Leadership is the Key to the 21st Century; a guide for those who want to apply moral leadership in business, government, and society to change the world.  In this talk we cover a lot of ground; how human-centric leadership will shape the leaders of tomorrow, the key abilities to become a human-centered leader, power questions that trigger a new way of thinking, and how organizational structures can alienate people from their life and soul. Anthony is CEO at the Confidere Group: that serve mentors to influential leaders, he is a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy and authentic leadership, and lives with his family at a farm in the countryside of Australia. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Did you hear about the Weekly Wisdom? It is a short email I send out just before the weekend. Resultatet blev boken The Shadow world - skuggvärlden.
