In this episode, COL Andy MacLean, USA (Ret.), the coordinator for Latin America at the Association for Christian Conferences, Teaching and Services (ACCTS (https://accts.org/)), discusses the mission of ACCTS and its work in developing Christian leaders in the armed forces worldwide.   He shares his experiences working with military communities in Latin America and the challenges and opportunities he encounters. Andy also highlights the upcoming AMCF World Conference and the need for financial support and prayer for the conference's success.  Andy then shares his testimony and the five fingerprints of God in his life. He discusses his journey from being a missionary kid to a military officer and the unexpected opportunities and doors that God opened for him. He emphasizes the importance of being a good steward of what God has entrusted to us and thinking strategically about where God has placed us.   He encourages Christians in the military to use their credentials and experiences to make an impact for the kingdom of God and to be mindful of the bigger picture in their actions and decisions.  Andy mentions a few resources in this interview: OCF small groups (https://www.ocfusa.org/directory/), Rocky Mountain High (https://www.springcanyon.org/rocky-mountain-high/), and the AMCF World Conference (https://www.worldconferenceamcf.com/en).     Takeaways   ACCTS' mission is to assist in the development of Christian leaders in the armed forces worldwide and establish military Christian fellowships.  Andy works as the coordinator for Latin America, supporting military Christian fellowships in 20 countries.  The AMCF World Conference aims to encourage and equip military Christians from around the world and provide a vision for their mission.  Financial support and prayer are needed for the success of the conference and the ongoing work of ACCTS.  There is a need for more people to get involved in ACCTS and support military Christian communities globally.  Be a good steward of what God has entrusted to you.  Think strategically about where God has placed you.  Use your credentials and experiences to make an impact for the kingdom of God.  Be mindful of the bigger picture in your actions and decisions.     Points to Ponder  Andy talks about the Lord using his military career to prepare him for his role with ACCTS. How have you seen God use an experience in your life for another?  When have you seen hardship bear fruit?  Andy shares about connections and networking being a way to further the gospel elsewhere. What do his anecdotes remind us of when it comes to the Lord and His church?  Thinking of the theme for this year's AMCF World Conference, what does it mean to you to “arise and shine” (Isaiah 60:1)?  How are you stewarding what God has given you?

Roane, 13 and 18 Jan 2021, respectively, is read and discussed via FB Live 1 March 2021 with Kurtis Olson at 1:30 pm California Time. This is honoring the late John W. Boswell. John had a storied career in Army Special Forces. He took down Noriega, he fought in the actual battle depicted in the film Black Hawk Down. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Silver Star. After his military service, he earned a BA, MA, and Ph.D., focusing on Public Law and American Politics. MSgt Dr. Boswell was deeply concerned about the consequences of an ignorant populace, ill-trained by Democrat only biased tax funded college campuses to prefer the thin venear of Socialism. He saw that first-hand as an older college student. John's first duty station, prior to being selected for sergeant and then the special forces, was in West Germany. He saw the Iron Curtain and what socialism had done to Eastern Europe. He was never tired of reporting that the guns on the wall were pointed towards itself, the Communist side, to prevent those wanting to escape. The Socialist threat didn't initially present itself that way, but that's how it ended up, a hell-hole. Permission was granted by the author to read and discuss prior to his untimely death. Show Notes  In this bonus episode of OCF Crosspoint, podcast host Josh Jackson continues his discussion with CH(CPT) Michael Will, USA (Ret.), focusing on the theme of hardship and suffering.  The conversation delves into defining suffering, recognizing its various sources—such as persecution, sin, and the actions of others—and understanding its impact. They address the dangers of comparison, which can undermine endurance, and emphasize the importance of acknowledging our lack of control as a starting point for discovering God's purpose in suffering.  The episode offers practical advice for navigating hardship, including perseverance and concentrating on what we can control. It also explores the purpose behind suffering, such as being shaped into the image of Christ and learning obedience. The conversation touches on the challenging yet transformative concept of rejoicing in suffering and finding hope amidst adversity. Silence and listening to God are highlighted as crucial practices in these times, along with the importance of seeking God's will through prayer.  Additionally, the discussion covers the role of discipline and training in preparing for suffering, encouraging believers to embrace it with a mindset of rejoicing. By viewing suffering as something appointed by God rather than accidental, believers can appreciate the transformative work God accomplishes through these hardships.    Points to Ponder  As you listen to this conversation with CH Will, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor:   What personal experiences have shaped your definition of suffering? How have you seen God use suffering in your own life and in the lives of others? What Bible verses encourage you in the midst of hardship? Michael talks about prayer as “the most effective tool” in his toolkit. What additional tools can you use when facing hard times?

America's National Guard was once considered a ragtag gaggle of pretend soldiers. Beginning in the 1980s the National Guard gradually transformed into today's highly flexible operational force that answers our nation's call for overseas combat deployments as well as domestic emergencies that run the gamut from lifesaving disaster responses to staffing Covid clinics. Brigadier General Paul "Greg" Smith describes his personal journey during these years, from a callow cadet to a committed commander leading military forces in response to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Smith gives a humorous, gritty, and sometimes touching glimpse into the inner workings of this unique military organization while offering portraits of the men and women who serve as the minutemen of our age. His reflections on service, duty, and the complexities of command will enlighten anyone who seeks to better understand the challenges of leadership. “In the post post-Vietnam restructuring of the service, the Chief of Staff, General Creighton Abrams, insured the U.S. Army would never deploy forces to a combat area without the National Guard again. Brigadier General Greg Smith provides an inside look at how National Guard soldiers have laid to rest the stereotype image of the ‘Weekend Warrior' and replaced it with that of a capable professional who has become an equal member of the operational force.”—Major Glenn F. My podcasts on The Ancient Art of Modern Warfare presented the elements of war that I think every citizen should know in holding our elected representatives responsible for decisions about going to and prosecuting war. The time has come in this series to move from war to peace. The most important consideration in going to and in prosecuting war is that it is the only way to correct a grave injustice and bring about a more just and lasting peace. Correcting this grave injustice must outweigh the death and destruction unavoidable in any war. Defending against the unjust attack of an aggressor and repelling the attacker's forces from the territory captured in that attack is, perhaps the only clear justification, although there is debate about the use of military force to stop grave violations of international law, and particularly those which could be considered crimes against humanity. Again, this must be done with the clear end state in view of restoring peace.  Once the iron dice of war are rolled, however, Clausewitz's trinity of passion, reason, and chance can lead us to places we did not intend to go.  These closing episodes of the Ancient Art of Modern Warfare we explore the transition from the violence of war to that more just peace.   Music: Copland, A. & United States Marine Band. One week after graduating from high school, CW4 Rich Smith, USA (Ret.), embarked on 24 years of military service that provided him experiences that answer that very question. Upon retiring from the Army, Rich has developed a passion for encouraging other service members not to camouflage their faith in Christ during their years in the military.   In this episode, we discuss what hinders and helps Christians live out their faith in the military, his personal experiences with Christian fellowship during years on active duty, and more. He also shares about his book, Camouflaged Christian, which provides a deeper dive on the topics he discussed on Crosspoint. Rich now resides in his hometown of Rome, New York, with wife Teri and granddaughters Amerie, Elodie, and Maisy. As you listen to this conversation with Rich, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor:  What motivates you to camouflage your faith while serving in the military context?  How does Ephesians 6:10-20 encourage you to live out your faith in all areas of life?  Rich shares a couple of personal anecdotes about how fellowship with other believers strengthened his walk during his time in the Army. What impact have you seen fellowship or the absence of it have in your own life?  What Scripture can you commit to memory for the seemingly impossible tasks you'll face at work?  Rich talks about the value of turning to the Bible first in all circumstances. What things do you find yourself turning to first for encouragement, comfort, etc.?

Is there a correlation between resilience and the prevalence of suicide in the military? How do you know if you've become resilient? Minutes after leading a session about the topic of resilience during OCF's annual Local Leader Conference held at Spring Canyon earlier this year, Col Tim Hale, USAF (Ret.), sat down with me in the dining hall of Hartley Holmes Lodge to address these questions and others.  Raised in a military community near Scott AFB, Tim began his own career in the Air Force after completing Air Force ROTC at St. Louis University. Throughout his decades of service, Tim's command positions at a variety of levels, bolstered by post-retirement experiences as a cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Department of Veteran Services and as an elder at his church, enabled him to see the importance of resilience firsthand. Tim now resides in Oklahoma, where he serves as OCF's Area Coordinator for Central Oklahoma, Southern Kansas, and Northern Texas.   Check out the various resources mentioned throughout this episode “March or die”: Turning to Christ & community in times of trauma, OCF Crosspoint episode with Jeremy Stalnecker that focuses on topics related to today's episode with Tim Path to Resiliency by Chad Robichaux, Jeremy Stalnecker, and John Mizerak (foreword by MG Bob Dees, USA (Ret.)) Days of Anguish, Days of Hope by Bill Keith The Resilience Trilogy by MG Bob Dees, USA (Ret.) As you listen to this conversation with Tim, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor Tim says the best time to build resilience is before a traumatic event takes place. How can you build resilience now so that you're better prepared if and when potentially traumatic life events occur? Referring to Path to Resiliency, Tim reminds us that God can heal our trauma and enable us to move forward. What examples, biblical or personal, come to mind as you think of God restoring people after a traumatic event? Specifically, what spiritual disciplines can you cultivate now so that those habits are already established if and when traumatic experiences occur? Who do you consider your community to support you through trauma and recovery? Tim shares 2 Corinthians 1:3 as a biblical encouragement that God sustains us through trials. What scripture can you begin clinging to now that will encourage you through the hardships of life?  Tim suggests that a self-examination of behavior in day-to-day life–even when things are good–can help assess personal resilience that will prove necessary in hardships. Reflect now on how you're handling the “small things” during this season of life, and ask yourself if there are spiritual disciplines to pursue as you seek to develop this resilience.

General Robert Brown (USA-Ret.) is an experienced commander who has led at every level, from platoon through Army Service Component Command. Serving as Commanding General of U.S. Army Pacific, General Brown led the Army’s largest service component command responsible for 106,000 Soldiers across the Indo-Pacific Region before his September 2019 retirement. General Brown is a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he was commissioned as an Infantry Second Lieutenant. His assignments took him across the globe including deployments in support of Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti, Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and two combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Before U.S. Army Pacific, he commanded the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; I Corps and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington; and the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning, Georgia. He also served as Chief of Staff for U.S. Army Europe; Deputy Commanding General for the 25th Infantry Division; Commander, 1st Brigade (Stryker) 25th Infantry Division; Commander, 2nd Battalion 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division; the Joint Staff, J-8; Army Staff, Strategy and War Plans Division G3/5/7 in the Pentagon; Aide-de-Camp, Vice Chief of Staff, U.S. Army; Executive Officer to Commander, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command; Assistant Professor and Deputy Director, Center for Enhanced Performance, West Point; and Infantry Assignment Officer, Human Resources Command. General Brown holds a Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Education from the University of Virginia, and a Master of Science in National Security and Strategic Studies (Distinguished Graduate) from the National Defense University. General Brown retired after more than 38 years of service. He was a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) before becoming President and CEO in October 2021. In today’s podcast, General Brown discusses how the Army can reach the next generation of Americans, the creation of Multi-Domain Task Forces, challenges in the Pacific AOR, and the importance of the Human Dimension. The following bullet points highlight key insights from our discussion: AUSA, like many other thought-leading organizations, has found itself needing to adjust to changing demographicsand has focused its outreach on connecting the Army with the community. Army bases have become heavily fortified in the post-9/11 environment, making it more difficult to reach that next generation of potential recruits. With “community connectors” and “community partners,” AUSA has the opportunity to tell the Army story and make those critical links. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is more aggressive nowthan in the last several decades. Relying on his experience as the Commanding General of U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC), GEN Brown believes the combination of an aggressive and over-confident CCP could be dangerous and potentially lead to accidental conflict. In the Indo-Pacific, it will be a Joint fight andevery domain matters. China’s Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) is powerful and can repel U.S. Forces at significant distance. To combat thi

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”  – Mother Teresa I am excited to welcome #FITFAM to the T&T mic, Aaron Brill and Manny Menendez. I have trained for years with Aaron and was excited to learn that he was bringing CrossFit in a unique way to his then day job, as a police officer. Arron was inspired by an experience through a friend that experienced deep changes because of the fitness modality- so he decided to introduce CrossFit and its principles to the other “insiders” and Lions' Pride Fitness was born. Lions' Pride Fitness is a CrossFit Community for those in or returning from incarceration. With over 5 years of experience in building CrossFit programs inside prison, they wanted to continue that community success outside. Arron was lucky enough to cross paths with Army Combat Veteran, Manny Menendez, who he brought on board to help guide the Lions' Pride Fitness process. Arron and Manny share their passion for fitness, community, and questioning a better way regarding re-entrance into mainstream society- regardless of where you are coming from. We all know antiquated systems need change, but what a refreshing approach to take things into your own hands and contribute where you can. This is a great convo about shifting perspectives and providing space for growth and change. What a world we would have if we all could do more of that!   Highlights: CrossFit and incarceration. Community, commitment, and working towards something larger. Perspective and opportunity. Systems and approach. Mindset of what we CAN do. Viewing people up close to lose your own bias. Humanizing leadership and meeting people where they are at. Taking existing skills and applying them to a legal game. Opportunity, hope, and evolution.   Aaron Brill Aaron is 25-year veteran of law enforcement (retired Feb '21), with the last 22 on Denver PD. Aaron spent 12 years as a patrol cop,  and 8 as an Academy Instructor where he found and fell in love with CrossFit, and 5 years as a patrol sergeant. He is a Co-founder of two non-profits aimed at bringing the whole person wellness of CrossFit to the justice system involved population. He is a proud husband of an amazing woman and Dad of two littles (6 year old daughter and 4 year old son).   Manny Menendez SSG, USA(Ret.) B.A.S. CF-L1 Lead Program Coordinator Veterans Healing Veterans from The Inside Out My name is Manny Menendez I am a US Army Combat Veteran.  After multiple deployments and injuries, I was medically retired from the service in 2013. I went on to earn my bachelor's degree after the service. Shortly thereafter I found myself incarcerated at Sterling Correctional Facility; this is where I found CrossFit.  Aaron at the time was the president of the CrossFit program inside the prison and we helped establish/build the program at sterling.  To this day I'm thankful for the work Aaron has done behind the wall and paving the way for CrossFit to be a part of that unique environment.  Thanks to his work I was able to earn my CF-L1 behind bars.  CrossFit has helped me make some foundational changes in my life and given me that structure, discipline, Comradery that I fell far away from during my transition out of the service.  Now I am very passionate about helping those in prison and reentering the community through CrossFit and working out.  I currently work as the lead program coordinator for veterans healing veterans, we are the largest organization advocating for the almost 200,000 justice involved veterans. We run a curriculum, which is based on narration therapy where we go in and help our nations forgot about hero's process some of their trauma so they are not finding themselves in these same positions.  I have a very unique journey, but am truly blessed to have gone through it all, because now I have found my purpose/life's work and that is invaluable to me.  Thank you for your time.  I look forward to the future and continuing this amazing work we are doing, truly impacting lives and making better human beings.    Lions' Pride Fitness: Mission: We exist to bring the full person wellness of CrossFit combined with peer and community mentorship to the Justice System Involved (JSI) population. Vision: We see a world where the community supports people in the ‘justice system involved' population and offer their time, talents and treasures in the success of those people. Establishment Republicans in the House are pushing back against any budget cuts because they are scared they will affect the military. But our military is completely destroyed from within. Today, we're joined by retired Lt. Col. Ivan Raiklin, a former Green Beret, who left the military because of the COVID mandates and woke culture. He believes that before we throw more money at the woke military, we need to do surgery within. He advocates replacing all the top leadership with those who were removed for speaking out against the mandates. Raiklin also explains how China has subverted our military and that the main battle against China is in the cultural and economic spheres. Until we reorient the culture and vision of the military, it is counterproductive to keep increasing Pentagon spending. Finally, I discuss how the DOD is doubling down on Operation Warped Speed to create endless vaccines on the military and society that will likely destroy our bodies and souls from within. The bombshell episode you won't want to miss. Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer, USA (Ret.), now president of the London Center for Public Policy becomes AJSTW's first return guest! Who better than Tony Shaffer to break down the raid at Mar-A-Lago? Everything you need to know about the handling of classified information, a President's powers (and a former president's rights) to declassify, retain, and store information.  They discuss how we got here, and why Trump is being targeted, the failures of the Trump administration to reign in the power of the combined law enforcement and national security states.  Tony gets candid about the Trump administration, and singles out specific officials--including a Trump family member that he calls a "train wreck".The FBI had access to the Hunter Biden laptop long before the 2020 election, but sat on it for nearly a year-we talk about why they say on it, why the Hunter Biden story was so vitally important, and what it meant for the long term. They also talk 9/11, and how specific actions of the Clinton Administration gave rise to the failures in 2000 and 2001 to identify the threat from Al Quaeda.  President Biden and his spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre continue demonizing his opposition, with KJP naming names, and the President makes some bizarre remarks that could be seen as racist.

Show Notes: CH(COL) Bob Phillips, USA (Ret.), joins us on the podcast today to speak from his 26 years of military service and his ongoing work as the chaplain to the Corps of Cadets at his own alma mater, Virginia Military Institute. Bob shares his stories of coming to faith with his parents, “straddling the fence” in high school and in college, and meeting his wife Tracy, before diving into what his current ministry looks like at VMI. He observes that one of the predominant topics of discussion among cadets and college students across the country today is anxiety. While anxiety can often seem unavoidable and unbeatable, Bob shares how he and Tracy use relationships and group Bible studies to address anxiety and point cadets back to Christ. Bob also serves on the OCF Council, this ministry's governing body, where he provides perspectives and input to shape OCF's strategic goals, ministry-wide decisions, and more.  Interested in learning more about generation-specific ministry? Check out the following resources Bob mentioned throughout this episode: College Ministry 101: A Guide to Working with 18-25 Year Olds by Chuck Bomar Generation iY: Secrets to Connecting With Today's Teens & Young Adults in the Digital Age by Tim Elmore Generation Z Unfiltered: Facing Nine Hidden Challenges of the Most Anxious Population by Tim Elmore Meet Generation Z: Understanding and Reaching the New Post-Christian World by James Emery White If you have an idea for a guest, topic, or story that I should consider for a future episode of the show, send an email to podcast@ocfusa.org or visit OCF's new “Be a Guest” webpage. As you listen to this conversation with Bob, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: Bob shares that his family's dining room table is their “greatest resource for evangelism… and discipleship.” How could you similarly use a seemingly everyday item to make an impact for the Kingdom? What topic seems to “come to the surface” often in your own local community, and how can you engage with that topic biblically? How does Christ address the anxiety many face today, such as the VMI cadets Bob serves? How have you seen the power of relationships with other believers impact your own life? Do you have a mentor? If you do, how can you start preparing to mentor others in the future? If you don't, who in your local community could you ask to pour into you spiritually in that capacity?
