Welcome to this week's episode of The AUSA Podcast! Today, we continue our conversation about culture making with Lindsey Gatlin! Join us as we sit down to talk about creativity, cultivation, leadership, prayer, and wisdom. If God is a Creator and a Ruler, then so are we. And if we are Creators and Rulers, then we are Artists and Gardeners. Because we are created in God's image and likeness, we have a responsibility to create and cultivate—to both make culture and keep culture. In this episode, we talk about what it looks like to be practiced in and receptive to the skills of creating and cultivating, and we translate the idea of being Artists and Gardeners into a culturally creative context. We break down the ways that Artists and Gardeners see and go about the world, and we explore the ways in which we can do that ourselves—the ways in which we can actually do something to influence culture. Creativity is the only way to incite lasting change, and we cannot create without cultivation. We think culture is very important, so if you enjoyed this episode or anything peaked your interest, we'd love to start a conversation! This Wednesday episode begins with an apology about the missing Monday episode and some ample clean-up from the weekend on Sam Burns, the Dunhill, Celine Boutier, and a Swedish killer. There's also a digression on whether the Town Crier has to make an announcement and declaration about the town fool in NE Florida. Then Andy and Brendan are on to the schedule of the week, which leads to Martin Laird appreciation and a couple unrelated stories about their scant few visits to Las Vegas. They ponder if every Champions Tour event should just be a guy and his friends, like this week's “Furyk and Friends” in Jacksonville. The LPGA event earns event of the week honors but one move that does not earn praise is the big news that the Dinah Shore will be relocating to Texas in the coming years. They discuss this at length in the news segment, which also features a chat on the newly announced Bryson-Brooks Match V at the Wynn in Vegas.
V svetu, polnem razraščenih poti, utirajo nove prehode.
Justin Michael starts the podcast by going over the results of the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, before briefly discussing the newest addition to the Swim & Dive team. Justin then goes over AJ Ott's incredible senior season and talks about the field for the Paradise Jam Event this fall.
Justin Michael goes over Bill Connelly's article on the most explosive returning players in college football for 2021 and talks about where Trey McBride ranks in terms of his all-time Rams status. Later in the episode, Justin talks about his excitement for the Master's Tournament and who he will be rooting for, including CSU alumnus Martin Laird.

PLAYOFFS!?! Martin Laird emerges victorious after 3-man playoff at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at sunny TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The Scotsman took home his second Shriners Open title over Matthew Wolff and Austin Cook. Will Zalatoris continues his quest for PGA Tour status, this week he fell just short of earning that special temporary status. He’ll have to wait until the Bermuda Championship for his next PGA Tour start (19:02)? Tyrell Hatton earned a victory across the Atlantic in a hoodie. Are you triggered by these young players wearing non-traditional apparel (21:17)? After the break we chat about the Beefy One, Bryson DeChambeau is changing golf with his pure power off the tee. Andy and Brendan begin this Victory Monday with some brief comments on their 4-1 football teams and then some not-so-brief comments on the practice of examining potato chips for green complex design inspiration. Then they get to the golf of the weekend, starting with Speedy Sei Young Kim winning the Women’s PGA at Aronimink. They focus on her inspiring pace, if she was the best to have never won a major, the importance of beating Inbee Park, and how the course so brilliantly brought out drama off the tee. For the BMW PGA, they lament the struggle it was to actually watch the conclusion on television but praise Hoodie Hatton’s play to capture that tour’s flagship event. Also, was there actually anyone critiquing him about wearing a hoodie or was this just a Twitter strawman? At the Shriners, they marvel at Martin Laird emerging from the Martin zone as well as some poorly placed TPC design service catch basins for his first win in seven years. Ernie Els and Trey Mullinax also get some love for their weekend wins before a lengthy news segment on the Matt Fitzpatrick vs. Bryson DeChambeau debate over what constitutes “skill.”

Continuing on with Fr Laird's wonderful text A Sunlit Absence, the second book of his three book series on contemplative prayer. Please be sure to subscribe to keep up with the Invitation Podcast, its retreats, and classes www.invitationpodcast.org/subscribe
Part XI of marks our journey halfway through Fr Martin Laird's A Sunlit Absence. This episode is the third movement with chapter four. We've spent more time with chapter four because it is the most difficult. If you are having difficulty getting your heart and mind wrapped around chapter four, you are not alone. Press on ahead if and when you sense the goodness of the Holy Spirit drawing. Do not force or fake your way. Read and practice your prayer. Practice your prayer and then come back to pray. All worship and prayer is a continual, ever-deepening rehearsal of the Gospel. As Fr Laird shares Teresa of Avila's words with us: "It is all about love melting into love." If you sense a further drawing into this love and would like some help and guidance this fall, consider The Invitation School of Prayer: https://www.invitationpodcast.org/school-of-prayer
Part X of our journey through Fr Martin Laird's A Sunlit Absence puts us squarely in the middle of the book. This is the second of three treatments of chapter four of the book. As we wade deeper into these waters, Josh wants to give listeners participating more freedom to not only stop listening and working through the book but to even perhaps take a break from the Invitation Podcast altogether. The awkward, strange, and even painful discovery is that as we move closer to God we are invited into more and more sacrifice, more death of self, more shifting of our priorities, and surprisingly more bewilderment. During the time of covid-19, anti-racism protests, and a presidential race we need to find ways to be careful and patient with ourselves. Further commitment to spiritual discipline can anchor us, yet we cannot strive or force ourselves along the way. Sacrifice always needs to be a response to cooperate with and deepen our love of God. If we attempt to earn God's love through contemplative prayer in a spirit of striving, we will drown. For those who sense the Holy Spirit's leading to go further into the discipline of prayer yet who would like further guidance along the way, please consider the Invitation School of Prayer launching this September with online resources for your growth: www.invitationpodcast.org/school-of-prayer Also, make sure to subscribe: www.invitationpodcast.org/subscribe
The Rev. Professor Sarah Coakley and Fr. Martin Laird, OSA discuss 'The Problem of Negative "Thoughts" in Prayer According to the Desert Tradition: Approaching Sickness through the Lens of Deepened Prayer'. This is the third of four sessions on 'Deepening Prayer in a Time of Pandemic and Social Unrest', held via webinar at Church of the Ascension and St. Agnes, Washington DC. If you would like more information about the School of Theology and Prayer, to access the handout from this session, or to listen to this as a podcast, visit: https://www.asa-dc.org/school-of-theology-and-prayer.html Taught by: Rev'd Professor Sarah Coakley. Coakley was formerly Norris-Hulse Professor at the University of Cambridge. She is an assisting priest and theologian-in-residence at the Church of the Ascension and St. Agnes. Fr. Martin Laird, O.S.A., is an Augustinian friar and Professor of Early Christian Studies at Villanova University. He has written a host of articles on books chiefly in patristics and Christian contemplative life, especially Into the Silent Land; A Sunlit Absence; and An Ocean of Light from Oxford University Press. Fr. Martin lectures widely throughout the United States, Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
In the context of covid-19, the Invitation has been focusing on A Sunlit Absence, the second of a three-book series on contemplative prayer by Fr Martin Laird. This episode is Part I of two parts comprising an 1.5 hour conversation that Fr Laird so graciously shared with us. Here Josh opens with a brief, guided prayer. Fr Laird shares some opening thoughts about contemplation in the context of all suffering we are experiencing throughout the world. Then we are able to interact with two questions from Invitation Podcast listeners who joined in to our zoom conversation. The next episode, No 60, will be Part X of our journey through A Sunlit Absence. Shortly after Part II of this conversation of Q&A with Fr Laird will be available to you. Thanks for listening and continuing the journey. Subscribe to the invitation to stay updated about new episodes, classes, and retreats available from the Invitation: https://www.invitationpodcast.org/subscribe
Part IX of our journey through Fr Martin Laird's A Sunlit Absence takes us into chapter four which is also titled, "A Sunlit Absence." This is the thickest and most challenging chapter of the book, so before diving into chapter four Josh spends ample time reviewing what is contemplation and why we are bothering with it especially in our present, painful time of pandemic and political strife. The pursuit of contemplative practice is at times bewildering and challenging, but with patience and persistence we will gain the reward of God's presence and friendship.
Part VIII completes chapter three of Fr Martin Laird's book, A Sunlit Absence. Josh offers some more context of Fr Laird's writing by looking at one saying of Abba Arsenius from the 4th century desert sayings. The question for discernment before us is what kind of daily practices, rhythms, disciplines each of us need to cultivate and nurture inner silence so that we can remain open to the love and life of God. You are invited to join our Zoom chat with Fr Laird Thursday, July 9 at 2pm EST. To find more information be sure to subscribe: www.invitationpodcast.org/subscribe
his is part VII of our journey through Fr Martin Laird's A Sunlit Absence, the second of his three books on contemplative prayer. In the last episode we looked at how the opposite of the contemplative life is not the active life, but the reactive life. In this episode we consider how silence leads us to justice, to an honest awareness of what is broken, sick, and failing inside of ourselves. Fr Laird is working out the teachings of Jordon of Saxony, a 13th century Augustinian monk who writes, “Through silence a brother begins to cultivate and practice justice by which virtue he is informed so as to live his own life honestly. Not to harm others, and to each each one his due. Such formation as this carries anyone so formed on to the state of perfection. On the other hand, from the breakdown of silence, disturbance of mind arise. Quarrels are borne.” A simple summary of Jordan of Saxony goes like this: the children of silence: peace of mind and cultivation of justice. Please sign up to stay informed about the date and times of our two Q&A sessions with Fr Laird here: https://www.invitationpodcast.org/fr-laird-qa-webinar If you have not already subscribed to the Invitation Podcast, please do so: https://www.invitationpodcast.org/subscribe It is a gift and honor to serve you through the Invitation Podcast. We hope you are well wherever you are during these difficult times. Peace of Christ!
This episode is part SIX of our journey through Fr Martin Laird's book A Sunlit Absence. Here Josh completes a guided study and practice through chapter two. It is not too late for you to join into this journey especially if you want to join into the webinar Q&A session with Fr Laird. Information and signup to be involved in the Q&A is found here: https://www.invitationpodcast.org/fr-laird-qa-webinar Due to Covid-19 the date and time for the first of these two sessions is TBA. In this time of quarantine and as we face the racism in America, we invite you to contemplation for two reasons: 1. Contemplation is a practice of Divine healing, where the Holy Spirit can have more access to reach the trauma, exhaustion, and despair we are experiencing. 2. Contemplation is a de-centering practice that open us to listen to God, and others, especially open to see how we are complicit in racism and in other arenas of sin. For more help with facing racism, please visit: https://www.invitationpodcast.org/facing-racism
To introduce Part V of our journey through Fr Martin Laird's A Sunlit Absence, Josh takes a moment to wrestle with the point of contemplative prayer in the midst of America's current racial upheaval. The two main gifts of contemplation for us as we heal of our racism is: 1. contemplation is divine therapy. It is a safe place to rest, to find healing, and to draw in the life of God as we continue in these very difficult race conversations and continue in our protesting. 2. Contemplation can lead to the de-centering that is necessary to see ourselves, to see our own contribution to the racism of America, and to hear, listen and see our black and brown brothers and sisters. Read more about this episode on our website: https://www.invitationpodcast.org/
While protests continue to erupt across America, we continue here on a journey into contemplative prayer knowing that contemplation is not an escape from the brokenness around us. Contemplation is not a comfortable way of hiding from the justice that we should all be crying out for today either. Contemplation will deepen and clarify our understanding of justice. Contemplation will help us identify each of our own unique responses to the crises that beset us, and contemplation will also help sustain and nourish our much needed activism to address the racism that continues to have a stranglehold on us. In fact, it may only be via contemplation that you are freed from your ego long enough to catch a glimpse of how you are contributing to the oppression of the marginalized and are a part of the problem! In this fourth episode working through Fr Martin Laird's book, A Sunlit Absence, we finish up chapter one and should by now have a working definition of contemplation. In this episode we consider how through practice, the mechanical nature of this prayer movement will eventually become familiar and more graceful. The exciting news is that Fr Laird has committed to two separate Q & A sessions with Invitation podcast listeners. The specific details are being worked out, but the idea is to meet with Fr Laird after chapter four and then again at the end of the book which will likely take us through most of July 2020. It isn't too late to dive into this valuable book and for you to come up with your own questions that you may very well be able to ask Fr Laird yourself. If you haven't already, please subscribe so that we can contact you with the further details about these two online events. https://www.invitationpodcast.org/subscribe Also, in this episode Josh mentions his song, “Silence.” The song can be found at the end of the episode, at 22:40. This is a more recent version of the song that includes Josh's wife, Susanna Childress as well as strings performed by Jared Demeester. The greatest gift you can offer back the invitation is to invite a friend to the Invitation. Please share the Invitation! If the Invitation has been of help to you, and if you would like to see the Invitation grow sustainably, your financial help is much appreciated. https://www.invitationpodcast.org/donations Peace of Christ to you in these very bewildering times. Amen.
This third instalment of our journey through A Sunlit Absence by Fr Marin Laird continues in chapter one. Chapter one is a summary of Laird's previous book, Entering the Silent Land. The intention here is to offer a substantial definition of contemplation as well as offering some practical descriptions of how contemplation is practiced. Bless you for continuing on this journey. May you be blessed even in the midst of this covid pandemic. Subscribe to this podcast to stay updated when new episodes, classes, and retreats are made available www.invitationpodcast.org/subscribe

One sentiment offered on social media this past week went something like this: “let's not return to normal. Normal wasn't working. If we try to return to normal, we won't have learned the costly lesson." This is the truth of all transformation. COVID 19 is just a very severe, collective opportunity for us to move beyond "normal." This episode no. 48 is the first of a new series of reading, studying, and praying through Fr Martin Laird's book A Sunlit Absence. Fr Laird helps us reform a consciousness that can embrace the transformation that is at hand. You are invited to buy the book to follow along in your own reading or to simply listen and pray with the podcast. If you have not subscribed yet to the podcast, please join the journey https://www.invitationpodcast.org/subscribe And also, please consider inviting someone to the Invitation. Let someone know about the goodness of going deeper with God with the Invitation Podcast. Peace of Christ to you during this troubling time wherever you are in the world.
Awareness: Silence’s very own practice. The practice of contemplation over many winters into spring often leads to a subtle but fundamental shift in prayer: from using a prayer word as a means of concentration to simple sitting in awareness. Just being. When inner silence sits in simple repose, its prayer is naked awareness. If we used a prayer word, it has not disappeared so much as opened up, something like the way a tulip opens up: what was tightly gathered in pointed focus begins to swell, expand, and open. And now this pollen-painted bowl of petals holds air and light-filled emptiness. This is awareness.— Father Martin Laird, in A Sunlit Absence: Silence, Awareness, and Contemplation. As regular readers and listeners will be aware, silence and awareness practice are a great passion of mine, and Fr. Martin Laird expresses both exquisitely in his writings. In today’s podcast, I read from Fr. Laird’s book, A Sunlit Absence: Silence, Awareness, and Contemplation, leading us into ten minutes of contemplation.Image and words: Andō.Thank you for reading. Pastor Eric and Susan Cepin discuss the book Into the Silent Land by Martin Laird. From the Book Review: Laird shows that the Christian tradition of contemplation has its own refined teachings on using a prayer word to focus the mind, working with the breath to cultivate stillness, and the practice of inner vigilance or awareness.

Martin Laird is the author of three highly-regarded books on Christian contemplative spirituality: Into the Silent Land: A Guide to the Christian Practice of Contemplation, A Sunlit Absence: Silence, Awareness and Contemplation, and An Ocean of Light: Contemplation, Transformation and Liberation. He is an Augustinian friar, and Professor of Early Christian Studies at Villanova University. He is also the author of an academic monograph, Gregory of Nyssa and the Grasp of Faith. Father Martin lectures and leads retreats widely through the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland. His books are deeply grounded in the Christian tradition and yet are accessible guides to how silence integrates into prayer and everyday life. Fr. Martin joined Carl and Kevin for a conversation over Skype, and a week later spoke with us again, this time with Cassidy joining us as well. Thanks to his generosity, this is our longest interview yet, and we hope our listeners will find insight and meaning in this thoughtful and perceptive conversation on silence and the spiritual life. Who are your "silence heroes" — persons, living or dead, famous or obscure, who inspired or mentored or otherwise encouraged your encounter, and/or ongoing relationship, with silence? This is the question that the three co-hosts of this podcast explore in this episode. Cassidy, Carl and Kevin talk about the spiritual leaders, mystics, poets, writers, and other key figures who have helped us to "meet" silence more fully in our lives. When you really meet silence, when you really encounter silence, it reminds you that you're good enough, as is — whatever you're doing, whoever you are, it reminds you that you're good enough, because it is a place of love, it is a place of self-encounter, it is a place of the encounter of the Divine, of God. — Cassidy Hall We talk about how our silence heroes inspire us — how they encourage us to love, to embrace nature, to write and enjoy poetry, to be sacred nonconformists, to preserve stillness, teach us how to talk about silence (or how to be silent with silence!), give us both theoretical and practical approaches to silence — all the while using their lyrical and poetic voices to encourage us to be, likewise, the "poets of our own lives" — lives in which silence "allows our own selves to actually come forward and speak." We are all poets of our own lives and silence allows our own selves to actually come forward and speak. — Kevin Johnson Some of the resources and authors we mention in this episode: Thomas Merton, Day of a Stranger Mary Oliver, Devotions: The Selected Poems Sara Maitland, A Book of Silence Martin Laird, Into the Silent Land Elias Marechal, Tears of an Innocent God Maggie Ross, Silence, Volume 1: Process Maggie Ross, Silence, Volume 2: Application Maggie Ross, Seasons of Death and Life: A Wilderness Memoir Rowan Williams, Silence and Honey Cakes Desert Fathers and Mothers, The Wisdom of the Desert (edited by Thomas Merton) Thomas Merton, Love and Living Walt Whitman, The Complete Poems Paul Tillich, The Courage to Be Thomas Merton, Raids on the Unspeakable Thomas Merton, The Literary Essays of Thomas Merton J. K. Rowling, The Harry Potter Collection At one point Carl mentions Martin Thornton when he's actually talking about Martin Laird, so in all fairness to his Freudian slip, here's a book worth reading from that author: Martin Thornton, Christian Proficiency Silence is the tomb of Christ — a place of infinite possibility. — A Monk of New Melleray Abbey Kevin Johnson is a university professor, writer, speaker, and retreat leader based in Connecticut. Cassidy Hall is a writer, photographer, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Carl McColman is an author, catechist, and retreat leader based in Atlanta. For language to be sane, it needs to be suffused with silence; and for silence to be accessible, it needs to be held in language... to be a human being who wishes to enter deeply into the cave of silence, our sherpa will be language. — Carl McColman Episode 6: Our Silence Heroes Hosted by: Kevin Johnson With: Cassidy Hall and Carl McColman Date Recorded: November 13, 2017

In this edition of the Secret in the Dirt Podcast, Mike and Jimmy recap their picks from the Valero Texas Open. Mike came away on top by a nose after Martin Laird shot a final round 63. Next, Mike recaps his weekend seeing Willie Nile in concert in Buffalo. He eventually explains what that has to do with golf...
In this week’s episode of the Golf Gambling Podcast on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network, Boston Capper (@boston_capper) and Steve Schirmer recap Martin Laird's unexpected win at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and other big takeaways from the weekend. Steve also admits to making maybe the worst live bet in gambling history, both shocking and disgusting his co-host. They next move onto the CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek, including an extensive breakdown of the golf course and what attributes to look for in a player this week. Both of them give a thorough analysis of all their favorite plays and fades in DraftKings (PROMO CODE SGP) from each price range. Unlike last week where they bickered about nearly every player, they found themselves liking and hating a lot of the same players. That always goes great, right? They also give out their favorite props on Thrive Fantasy for Round 1 (PROMO CODE SGP). Finally, they wrap up the show with their best bets for outright winners and matchup props on MyBookie.ag.
