Asian MMA Weekend Recap May 3-5 2019 - Asian MMA Podcast Episode 20 Before we get right into the fight action from the weekend, I’ve got to give a shout out to two fighters who have cut their teeth in the Asian MMA scene over the years and have been making some serious moves as of late. First up a big shot out to Cole Smith who made a successful UFC Debut over the weekend. The Cole Train spent a lot of time training up in Chiangmai Thailand with Team Quest Thailand, under the tutelage of Dylan Fussell. Cole cut his teeth in the Bangkok based promotion Full Metal Dojo, having an amateur fight under their banner, and making his pro debut with Thailand Ring Wars back in 2016. This isn’t on Coles record, but if my memory serves me correctly I saw Cole fight in a very underground promotion out in Pathum Thani, Thailand called Ring Wars, this was pure grit, they set up mats in a parking garage, slapped some cage around it and held a one-day tournament. Amature, pro, it didn’t matter. You just showed up and banged. The second shout out is to another FMD Alumn and Rizin Heavyweight Grand Prix finalist Amir Aliakbari who signed with the UFC over the weekend! Amir is an Iranian beast who other than his only loss to the legend of CroCop has smashed everyone else he has faced, having gone the distance just once in his 10-1 career. He was basically the most feared heavyweight in Asian MMA for a long time, Also happens to be one of the nicest dudes in the game. He was training out of AKA Thailand with Mike Swick for a while, I’m not sure if that is still the case, I have heard conflicting reports, and have not had that confirmed by Amir as of yet. It looks like he will be making his UFC debut on their upcoming Abu Dhabi show in September, no opponent has been announced, but I am looking forward to that one for sure. One thing that has to be pointed out regarding Amir is that he has a lifetime band from wrestling due to a positive PED test. Of course, we all assume that fighting for Rizin and ACB these types of things are not an issue, but signing with the UFC means he will have to enter their USADA testing pool. My hope is that this won’t impact his ability to compete in the UFC, but only time will tell. But my fingers are crossed. On to this weekends events. The first one is the IMMAF Asian Open Championships held right here in Bangkok. Now Bangkok was a last minute replacement location for the championships. They were supposed to be held in China, but there were some administrative difficulties so the Thailand branch of IMMAF stepped up and organized the tournament on about two months notice. The event went really well. It was held right in the middle of the city, so it was easy to get to. And they put on three days of amazing fights. The tournament was full representative of the Asian members of IMMAF, but what we saw when you look at the results were that for the most part Kazakhstan and Bahrain pretty much dominated every single division. Of the 15 divisions, just 3 were won by fighters from other countries, and of the 15 division, Kazakhstan won 7 of them. There is something special in the water there. Clearly, the wrestling base played a very big role in the Kazak teams success, as did their overall conditioning.

Javier Mendez Co-Owner/Advisor and Founder of AKA Former World Champion Kickboxer Founder of AKA Head trainer & Coach for Team AKA Official coach on the UFC Ultimate Trainer video game Javier Mendez started training in martial arts in 1978, studying the discipline of Tang Soo Do. Mendez started his kickboxing career in 1985 in exhibition bout against Bill “Superfoot” Wallace, after which he began his pro kickboxing career. Shortly thereafter he established American Kickboxing Academy out of Capital Glass Shop and started training with a small contingent of students. After fighting his way through the kickboxing ranks, Mendez won his first world championship in 1992 when he became the ISKA Light-Cruiserweight Champion. After defending the title for two years, Mendez moved up in weight and won the ISKA Light Heavyweight Championship in 1995. Mendez would also train several amateur and pro kickboxing champions such as pro champions like Travis Johnson, Jerome Turcan, Jean-Claude Leuyer. His amateur champions include Derek Yuen and Gary Owens. In 1996, Mendez had his first foray into the world of mixed martial arts, when local UFC fighter Brian Johnston sought out Mendez to help him improve his kickboxing ability. Mendez then found his new career, becoming a MMA trainer. Mendez would train his first UFC champion in 1997, when Frank Shamrock would join American Kickboxing Academy. Mendez would be his trainer until his first retirement, which included being in his corner for his perfect 5-0 UFC run as UFC Middleweight Champion. Mendez's next big star would be B.J. Penn, whom was already a highly respected grappler but needed to learn how strike and become a complete fighter. Under Mendez, Penn would win his first three fights by knockout, earning the young fighter a title shot against then UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver. Although unsuccessful in his attempt to become champion, Penn's training with Mendez would lay the foundation for his successful UFC run down the road. Mendez would slowly build his stable of MMA fighters, which initially included Bobby Southworth, Josh Thomson, Mike Swick, Paul Buentello, Jon Fitch and Mike Kyle, all who would eventually find themselves in the UFC at some point in their careers. After the success of the Ultimate Fighter and with MMA booming, more fighters would seek Mendez's tutelage like Ultimate Fighter standout Josh Koscheck. More and more fighters would join AKA's stable of MMA fighters like Trevor Prangley, Phil Baroni, Nate Moore, Justin Wilcox, Kyle Kingsbury, Luke Rockhold, Cung Le, Mark Ellis, Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez. Mendez would also prepare former Heisman trophy winner Herschel Walker for his MMA career, training him and cornering for all his fights so far. Many of AKA's fighters would go on to win various championships in several different MMA organizations. In King of the Cage; Daniel Cormier would claim the heavyweight title and Mike Kyle winning the light heavyweight title. In Strikeforce alone, several of Mendez's fighters won several championships titles; Cung Le becoming the middleweight champion by stopping former Mendez trainee Frank Shamrock; Josh Thomson becoming the lightweight champion; Bobby Southworth becoming the light heavyweight champion and Luke Rockhold as the Strikeforce Middleweight title. Last but not least is Cain Velasquez, who became the UFC Heavyweight Champion at UFC 121 by stopping then champion Brock Lesnar with strikes. In 2015, Javier became the ONLY trainer to have 3 concurrent UFC Champions (Heavyweight – Cain Velasquez, Light Heavyweight – Daniel Cormier, Middleweight – Luke Rockhold). Mendez has built up AKA to be one of the more respected MMA camps in the world and he isn't done yet, having many young fighters in the pipeline to become the next MMA stars.

Stephane Vigneault appears on the program to discuss his upcoming amateur MMA gala, FightQuest 9 at Le Skratch in Laval, Quebec this Saturday night (October 3). Strength and conditioning coach for Team Rashad on this season of TUF, Jonathan Chaimberg called in and talked about his time on the show and fighters he trains like Nate Marquardt, Rashad Evans and Georges St-Pierre. Dave and Kevin also talk about Anderson Silva's next opponent, Mike Swick versus Dan Hardy at UFC 105, this past week's episode of Monday Night Raw, a possible return to the WWE for The Rock and Matt Hardy's constant Tweeting.
At UFC 63 Swick beat former title challenger David Loiseau via unanimous decision, where he suffered a hand injury found out to be ligament damage. Swick's first UFC defeat came at UFC 69, losing by unanimous decision to Japanese middleweight Yushin Okami. He had Okami noticeably rattled toward the end of the second round with a flurry of punches, but ultimately succumbed to Okami's superior wrestling and physical presence, as he was took down comfortably and suffered an onslaught of ground and pound for the majority of the fight. Chris Leben was asked to fight Mike Swick for the second time on UFC Fight Night 11 (the two had previously met in the WEC, where Leben handed Swick his only KO loss to date) for the main event, on any weight class of his choosing but Leben turned down the fight. Swick then was scheduled to fight Jonathan Goulet but withdrew from the fight on September 2nd due to a rib injury. Swick headlined UFC Fight Night 12 making his welterweight debut, where he defeated Josh Burkman via majority decision.[1] Swick defeated Marcus Davis at UFC 85 on June 7th, 2008 where he controlled the fight displaying disciplined striking skills en route to a unanimous decision victory. Swick then went on to fight and defeat Jonathan Goulet at the UFC: Fight for the Troops (Ultimate Fight Night 16) by KO in 33 seconds into the first round on December 10th, 2008. He opened up with a characteristically aggressive flurry of punches, where Goulet was caught and knocked out before he hit the ground, Swick followed up with strikes on the floor untill the referee swiftly stopped the fight. Swick will next take on TUF 6 alum Ben Saunders (fighter) at UFC 99.
Joe Riggs talks to the Ringside Report a week before his big Strikeforce bout with Phil Baroni.Over his career, Riggs has fought in the Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight and Welterweight divisions, and became a four-time Desert Quest champion, two-time Grappler's Quest Advance champion, Rage in the Cage Heavyweight and Middleweight champion, Art of War Heavyweight champion, Evolution Combat Heavyweight champion, and XCF Light Heavyweight champion. [2] Riggs' dream of fighting in the UFC materialized in 2004, in a winning bout against Canadian fighter Joe Doerksen. Riggs received his shot at the UFC Welterweight title at UFC 56 in November 2005 against Matt Hughes. Originally, the title shot was offered to Karo Parisyan, who had to withdraw due to a torn hamstring. When Riggs was contacted to take Parisyan's place he jumped at the chance, despite having fought at UFC 55 just a month earlier. However, Riggs did not make the required weight and the fight was declared a non-title event, due to Hughes allowing Riggs to fight him (if a fighter does not make weight for a match, the match may still take place if their opponent allows it). Despite his efforts, Riggs could not mount a significant challenge; Hughes took him down and submitted him with a kimura from half-guard just minutes into the first round of the fight. Following his loss to Hughes, Riggs rebounded to win against Nick Diaz (decision) at UFC 57. In the hospital room after the fight, Diaz and Riggs got into a physical altercation where they had to be separated by police. Riggs then moved up to Middleweight to face The Ultimate Fighter alumni Mike Swick. Early in the fight Riggs was caught in a guillotine choke and tapped out. Riggs then fought The Ultimate Fighter 2's Jason Von Flue, submitting him with a triangle choke. Riggs' last UFC bout was on December 13, 2006 against Welterweight contender Diego Sanchez at UFC Fight Night 7. Riggs lost the fight due to knockout from a hook followed by a knee in 1:45 of the first round. Following the fight with Sanchez, Riggs chose to go to the WEC and compete for the vacant Middleweight championship, but had to pull out of the fight the day before because of a recurring back injury.[3] Riggs lost to Cory Devela via TKO at Strikeforce: At The Dome due to re-injuring his back while pummeling before Devela threw him. He was a heavy favorite in this fight, and his loss continued a streak of performances that did not live up to the expectations for the talented fighter (particularly vs. Hughes, Salaverry, Swick, and Sanchez). Riggs was to return to action on Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Thomson, facing Jiujitsu specialist Luke Stewart. Riggs stepped in as a late replacement for Shonie Carter who was injured in training. The fight was to be contested at a catchweight of 178 pounds.[1] However, He was denied licensure by the California State Athletic Commission after disclosing his recent use of prescription medication during the licensing process. Joe Riggs lost to Kazuo Misaki at Strikeforce at the Playboy Mansion on September 20, 2008. Joe Riggs won his last fight at Strikeforce: Destruction on November 21, 2008 against Luke Stewart by TKO (Punches) in 2nd round 2:05. Riggs broke his hand throwing the first punch of the bout, but managed to rally in the second round, breaking Stewart's nose in the process. [2] He will next be fighting on the Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields card from the ScottTrade Center in St. Louis,MO on June 6, 2009. His opponent will be Phil Baroni in a 3 round welterweight bout. This card will be broadcast live on the Showtime cable network.
